The church in the West is in declineand nationalism won’t save it – America Magazine
Posted: July 16, 2021 at 1:07 pm
I was 17 years old when I heard the Lords Prayer spoken in public for the first time. It was in November 1989 during the Velvet Revolution, which brought freedom to Communist Czechoslovakia. The crowd of almost 500,000 people chanted and cheered while the dissidents spoke. But when the Rev. Vclav Mal started praying the Our Father, it grew quiet.
After two generations of religious suppression and intense Communist indoctrination, few people could recite the prayer by heart. Many had never heard of it. But everyone understood it was a solemn moment.
Father Mal, a Czech priest who had been previously imprisoned and persecuted, led peaceful meetings in Prague with Vclav Havel and other prominent dissidents of the underground anti-Communist movement. The police could have arrested the priest at any moment for public preaching, but he remained calm.
That cold and snowy day marked for many their first encounter with public worship, spirituality and prayer. The Catholic Church that Father Mal represented was very different from the church that I knew. I knew of the church from textbooks that passed through the government censorship and presented a very biased interpretation of history.
Father Mals church also felt different from the artistic and architectural wonders of silent, empty buildings that I somehow knew I belonged to, but whose mystery was far beyond my reach. As if coming out of the shadows of its cathedrals, the Catholic Church came alive in the humanity and vulnerability of Father Mal. He encouraged and comforted everyone, baptized or not. He was there for us whether or not we had found the courage to defy 40 years of official atheistic teaching and openly contemplated the possibility of Gods existence.
The fall of Communism ushered the world into a new era of unprecedented technological progress, interconnectedness and acceleration of political developments. The church finds itself now in a similar place. It can be a transformative forcepolitically, economically and spirituallyby standing with the powerless and vulnerable today as it did during the fall of Communism. The church has also demonstrated it can be an amazing force of change in Africa and China. But its alignment with government establishment or nationalism is problematic in Hungary and other countries, where religious leaders, appealing to a Christian national heritage, struggle to pass laws that would bring their secularizing societies back to their Christian roots. This top-down approach is not effective or sustainable in our current globalized world, and it overlooks the tremendous opportunities for revival and transformation from the ground up.
Throughout history, Christianity was frequently spread by the ruling elites, who introduced it and maintained it among their subjects. The conversion of Emperor Constantine in A.D. 312 was a pivotal point for the Christianization of Europe; and from then on, Christianity usually spread through the conversion or arrival of rulers, who built churches, invited missionaries and established laws favorable to Christianity. The system of political elites sustaining the religious values and order in their countries was definitively reaffirmed and codified in the 1648 Peace of Westphalia treaties, which ended 30 years of religious conflicts in Europe, established the modern international system of nation-states and made a clear distinction between domestic and international politics.
But this distinction has become blurred in recent decades, when information and ideas travel freely across borders. As most Western countries gradually embraced liberal democracy, freedom of religion and free access to information, religious control and influence of governments over their domestic populations has steadily diminished, and the Westphalian principle of cuius regio, eius religio has lost its significance.
Gradually, younger generations have grown accustomed to question societal norms and values and to put emphasis on personal spiritual experience rather than to reflectively adopt the religious values of political or parental authority. Thus, the transmission of faith from generation to generation is no longer automatic; and our current era has been marked by a significant decline in established forms of Christianity, particularly in countries with a historically strong alliance between Christianity and governmental authority.
St. John Paul II understood the opportunity to reach out particularly to those outside of government authority. His famous words, Do not be afraid! addressed to all the oppressed peoples in Communist regimes somehow penetrated even the most stringent authoritarian censorships and reached the hearts of the powerless all over Eastern Europe. The impact of this saint on the liberation of the entire continent is recognized and well documented by prominent non-Catholic scholars of the Cold War, like the British historian Timothy Garton Ash and the American Cold War expert John Lewis Gaddis, who wrote: When John Paul II kissed the ground at the Warsaw Airport on June 2, 1979, he began the process by which communism in Polandand ultimately everywherewould come to an end.
The popes kiss was not merely a symbolic gesture; he literally worked to dismantle Polands authoritarian regime from the ground up. By celebrating Mass in the public square in Warsaw and in a shipyard in the port city of Gdansk, he was able to engage directly with the common people, who suffered the most.
The late pope also contributed to the unusually peaceful character of most of the democratic transitions in Europe by promoting the ideology of peaceful resistance and by befriending and encouraging the notorious dissident peacemakers Lech Walesa and Vclav Havel.
But St. John Paul II did not limit his influence and support for anti-authoritarian grassroots movements to his native country or continent. He was also critical of Latin American right-wing authoritarian regimes. His visits to Chile, Paraguay and Haiti, and his particular attention and encouragement of the oppressed dissidents are often cited as catalysts to the eventual demise of the regimes of Pinochet, Stroessner and Duvalier. A particularly moving incident revealed to the Chilean people that the pope was unequivocally on their side: when he publicly kissed and embraced a young student protester, Carmen Gloria Quintana, who was scarred as a result of brutal beatings and an incineration attempt by dictator Pinochets soldiers.
St. John Paul II demonstrated the potential for the Catholic Church to be a transformative force for dismantling authoritarian regimes when it engaged with the grassroots movements of the oppressed. The recent spread of Christianity in many countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East shows that the connection with the poor and marginalized is still crucial.
These vibrant churches, in countries where Christianity has not been a part of the political establishment and especially in places where believers have to overcome tremendous hurdles and persecution, prove that Christianity does not need favorable political conditions to flourish. The rapid growth of both Catholic and Protestant churches in sub-Saharan Africa has been widely reported. Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya have ranked as having record numbers of Christian conversions.
Different from the church in Europe, the African church is not so deeply entwined with the power of historically established political structures. Many may first see the work of the church alive in the dedicated effort of numerous missionaries and organizations like Unbound, Cross-Catholic Outreach and Catholic Relief Services, which work side by side with local people in construction, agricultural advancements, vaccinations, basic medical care and education. Direct evangelization work by other charities has also borne much fruit.
Because of increased economic partnership between China and Africa, Chinese workers encounter hospitable and vibrant Christian communities, which often leads to their conversion, as Christopher Rhodes of Boston University reported last year for UnHerd. The American management consulting firm McKinsey & Company reported in 2017 that there were more than 10,000 Chinese-owned operating firms in Africa and approximately one million Chinese workers living mostly in Algeria, Angola, Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia.
When they return to China, they not only bring their newly found faith with them but also continue practicing it and spreading it through underground networks, despite a persistent and intensified government persecution. The estimated number of active Christians there, which most research institutes put between 40 million and 70 million, has already exceeded the number of practicing Christians in France and Great Britain, and it is predicted that by 2030 China will be the largest Christian country in the world, surpassing Brazil and the United States.
In order to be a truly vibrant and transformative force in our globalized world, Christianity needs to detach itself not only from dominating power establishments but also from nationalism and ethnic sentiments, presenting itself foremost as a religion of conversion rather than an attribute of an inborn ethnic or racial identity. Connecting Christianity to nationalism leads to the rise of extremism and reduces ones capacity to see the potential for conversion among people of different ethnic or national affiliation. The recent trend of conversion among immigrants is well documented in Darren Carlsons 2020 book Christianity and Conversion Among Migrants, for example, and their potential for future growth and renewal of Christianity in Western societies has been underestimated among politicians in the United States as well as in Europe, where the question of accepting refugees from non-Christian countries has been particularly pertinent and where many politicians pursue anti-immigration policies, arguing for the preservation of Christian culture.
Hungarys prime minister, Viktor Orban, himself a Calvinist convert from atheism, wrote in 2015 that the acceptance of Muslim refugees should be limited because Europe and European culture have Christian roots. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland likewise argued in a 2017 interview for accepting only Christian refugees to reshape Europe and re-Christianize it.
Matteo Salvini, the former minister of the interior and deputy prime minister of Italy, used Catholic symbols as campaign props. But he is known for denying asylum to hundreds of refugees and for turning away the rescue ship Aquarius from Libya, with 600 people. He justifies his actions in the name of protecting Europes Christian heritage.
These arguments are based on the erroneous assumption that a secularized European is closer to converting to an active Christian faith than a Muslim immigrant. The opposite is true, and evidence shows that Muslim immigrants are converting to Christianity at much higher rates than native Europeans. They have revitalized declining churches in several European countries.
Both Protestant and Catholic charities throughout Europe have reached out to impoverished and homeless migrants from conflict zones in the Middle East, especially Syria and Iraq. Having experienced an extremist and distorted version of Islam, some of them were already inclined toward Christianity but could not pursue the faith in their home country because of the risk of death, mutilation, imprisonment or social ostracism. Bishop George Saliba of Beirut, Lebanon, recently reported to Public Radio International that he personally baptized more than 100 such refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011. Other immigrants encountered Christianity for the first time when they found protection in churches temporarily converted into makeshift refugee homeless shelters. Pope Francis directive for every Catholic parish in Europe to host at least one refugee family enabled many impoverished immigrants to find hospitable homes in a Christian environment.
Some Muslim immigrants and refugees voluntarily convert to Christianity when seeking asylum, even though there are no advantages in most European countries for doing so. They convert despite facing a tremendous risk if their asylum application is denied. According to The Guardian, the archbishop of Vienna received over 300 requests for adult baptism in the year 2016, three quarters of whom were Muslim refugees. Protestant churches in Hamburg and Berlin had so many former Muslims seeking baptism that they reserved municipal swimming pools to celebrate the sacrament.
Pastor Gottfried Martens testified that in his church alone, Trinity Church in Berlin, the congregation has grown from 150 to almost 700 because of converts from Islam. The curate of Liverpool Cathedral, Mohammad Eghtedarian, who is a convert from Islam and a refugee from Iran, conducts weekly services in Farsi to accommodate the growing number of newly converted Christians from Iran and Afghanistan.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, a strong advocate for greater acceptance of Muslim refugees in Germany, said that Europes problem is not too many Muslims but too few Christians. Europe needs a Christianity that is capable of sharing the political space with moderate Islam and other minority faiths and still continuing to be a transformative force that remains close to the poor and marginalized. Europe desperately needs a church that equally embraces all people regardless of their previous affiliation, their social status, the color of their skin or whether their ancestors built the cathedrals.
These trends unequivocally show that Christianity is more likely to penetrate secular Western societies when it is aligned with immigrants and the powerless than when Christian values are promoted and legislated from a position of power. Fortunately, Pope Francis is already leading the way in this direction by reaching out to the poor and marginalized, by his relentless advocacy for immigrants and refugees and by his astounding peacemaking efforts, especially with the Muslim world.
Following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, who penetrated enemy lines during the fifth crusade to engage in a three-day dialogue with the Sultan Al-Kamil, the pope likewise reaches out to the Muslim world. In February 2019, he celebrated the first papal Mass on the Arabian Peninsula. However, his most remarkable acts of Christian leadership are his engagement with the powerless, such as his efforts to ameliorate the situation of the impoverished and often forgotten tribes of the Amazon and his relentless advocacy for the refugees who end up on the European shores.
He is known to wash and kiss the feet of Muslim immigrants and to welcome and offer a new home to non-Christian refugee families within the Vatican residence. He is not afraid to openly criticize cruel and inhumane decisions of powerful politicians, such as the mistreatment of refugees, the building of border walls, family separations, the death penalty and policies that foster further economic inequality, but he manages to stay away from specific political endorsements as he declines to tell his American flock which candidate they should vote for in presidential elections.
The globalized world needs to encounter a Catholic Church that is not entangled with power politics and nationalism and that will follow the leadership of Pope Francis. The church needs the examples of leaders like St. John Paul II, who kissed the ground of Communist countries and the scarred faces of victims of oppression, and Father Mal, who risked arrest to pray with an overwhelmingly atheist crowd. To be a truly relevant and transformative force, the Catholic Church of the 21st century needs to be willing to relinquish political power and meet the suffering and marginalized in their humble and vulnerable position.
Embracing those with a strong Christian upbringing as well as those who have not yet heard the Gospel, the church needs to recognize that the greatest potential for the future of Christianity may be among those who practice their faith despite oppression. In Western societies, there is hope that revival may come from the least powerful, especially the immigrants and refugees, who often end up on our shores untouched by the waters of baptism. The newly found faith of those who convert and their powerful testimonies may inspire those who have taken their religion for granted.
The Catholic Church of my childhood in Prague was stripped of all its former worldly power and glory. The contradiction between the dazzling beauty of Catholic art and architecture on every corner of Prague, and a widespread lack of knowledge of even the most basic tenets of Christianity during Communist times was an absurdity that only Franz Kafka would have been able to describe adequately. Tall gothic spires and baroque domes form the skyline of the city and witness to the former political, ideological and cultural influence that the church enjoyed throughout centuries of Czech history. Yet the role of the Catholic clergy was often reduced to the upkeep of the church building and limited service to the elderly and foreign tourists.
Lured by the serene beauty of the interior, sublime organ music and perhaps the spiritual effects of my infant baptism I did not yet know about, I was occasionally able to witness Masses celebrated in languages that I could not understand and to walk around beautifully ornate fonts filled with holy water, which I was not permitted to touch. Silent priests, who could face severe repercussions for engaging with the young, never acknowledged my presence as I tried to piece together the basic tenets of the Gospel story, partially preserved in ancient paintings, Latin inscriptions and Christmas carols, which could not be sung outside our homes.
The public prayer by Father Vclav Mal in front of half a million people in November 1989 was thus a stunning event and a sure sign of change. Although the spirit of freedom was already in the air, there were still lingering fears of military suppression, as older generations recalled their vivid memories of the brutal invasion by troops of the Warsaw Pact that snuffed out the 1968 Prague Spring freedom movement 21 years before.
Despite these well-founded fears of possible repression and despite the fact that most dissidents and the majority of the public were not believers, many Catholic priests as well as other Christian leaders embraced all the risks and vulnerability and joined the humble and spiritually impoverished crowd in the public square. Under the cold grey skies of those pivotal days, their prayers and encouragement helped change the course of history and opened the gates of freedom for millions of people, whose lives would never be the same.

Restore Quaids Pakistan
Pakistan has suffered enough ever since we diverted from Quaids vision that Pakistan should be a modern democratic welfare state where all citizens would have equal opportunities, laws and constitution would be supreme and fundamental rights assured.
This country was not created to provide sanctuary to extremists, exploiting sectarian and ethnic divide, for perpetuating their greed for power, nor a country to be a haven for land mafia and cartels involved in black-marketing and hoarding, nor to fight proxy wars for others.
This country was created through a democratic political struggle waged by politicians with integrity, unwilling to submit to temptations of allotment of lands and assets.
It was expected that the Muslim majority would incorporate the Islamic concept of justice, tolerance, meritocracy, pursuit of knowledge in science & technology, economics and welfare for all in Constitution. MAJ elaborated this on 11 August 1947.
Instead, what we have witnessed is exploitation of religion and a system based on the legacy of colonial laws with a paid bureaucracy created by Raj to serve the interests of an occupying colonial power, conspiring to ensure that modern welfare state, where the will of people reigns supreme does not emerge.
Half the country was lost, when Pakistan under a debauched dictator refused to hand over power to the elected representatives on one pretext or another.
A country created through a political process for the establishment of a modern democratic welfare state was derailed by opportunists exploiting religion and today we face danger of chaos.

Myth of atheism
The existence of God the Magnificent is the ultimate Truth and tangible Reality of this universe.
He is the All-Knowing and Master of this humungous workshop before our eyes. His creations and the wonders of human existence hold the ground of His Existence.
But unfortunately, the increasing reliance on the scientific empiricism and experiments have led the humanity astray. It has diverted man from his ultimate Benefactor.
Nowadays, another prevalent spook of atheism is trending in our society. From the metropolitan cities to the interior cities of the Sindh and Punjab, people are instantly modernizing themselves as atheists hopelessly denying their own existence on the face of this earth.
They are ready to be in discord with their Creator making their life an unpardonable offence.
One may say that despite having the greatest wonder of this world their mind, they are denying the purpose of their creation and existence on this pale blue dot. Any logical being having the senses and intellect can not dare deny the identity of Lord.
Implicitly, one, being a rational and logical, can easily prove the existence of God. Take a look around you.
Dont you see the working of all human beings, the day being converted to night and vice versa.
Are these impassable and undiscovered roots of this unending universe deniable? Is it possible to say that this huge mechanism of universe is working without any Powerful Entity?
The logical answer which strikes to human mind is no. Lets reflect upon our daily life and scientific research. Can a person be begotten without father? Could the technology and giant vehicles come into existence without their manufacturer? If everything present on the surface of this earth has a creator so how come this beautiful universe come into being without any Manufacturer. Even the logic itself refutes the argument.

World Population Day
11 July was observed as World Population Day across the world to raise awareness about the reproductive health needs and susceptibilities.
In 2007, United Nation projected that in 2050 Pakistan will move to 5th place with around 292 million people, but it is alarming to note that UNs projection became true in 2021 almost 29 years earlier.
Not only in Pakistan but all over the world this growth is successively increasing which is not good for any country.
Because no country has graduated from developing status to developed in the last sixty years without first reducing population growth.
It has been observed that the countries that have balanced population, crime rate is very low in such regions. But where people are not provided with the basic necessities, it elevates crime rate.
Overpopulation exacerbates many social and environmental factors, including overcrowded living conditions, pollution, malnutrition and inadequate or non-existent healthcare, which wreak havoc on the poor and has increased their likelihood of being exposed to infectious disease.
Approximately 350,000 women die each year due to pregnancy-related causes, despite recent improvement and international commitments to reducing maternal mortality.
So lowering fertility rate by increasing the use of family planning helps reduce pregnancy-related deaths and population growth.
This year the World Population Day theme focuses on importance of the reproductive health and rights for all people, that is, Rights and Choices are the answer: whether baby boom or bust, the solution to shifting fertility rate lies in prioritizing the reproductive health and rights of all people.
So there is a dire need on national and international level to reduce population because not every growth is inspiring and beautiful if it hampers our home.

Appeal to Interior Minister
As recently Federal Investigation Agency FIA announced 1148 various catogeriesed vacancies in the country to fill them out within four provinces of the country for which more than one million people cleared their online registration through FIA online portal.
So here the vacancies are categorised into various steps to fill them on open merits like Inspector, Assistance Sub-Inspector, Constable and many more which are needed to be filled.
For instance, first step is physical exercise, along weight and height of the candidates, if they will have been selected, then go for the written test.
Likewise, there are so many candidates who applied for the vacancies from Makran Division Balochistan which is far from the capital city of the province.
Since most of them belong to middle class families so it is tough for them to bear the cost of travelling to the capital city for the physical test, if they dont complete the requirements of the physical test, obviously they will be rejected from the beginning without sitting in written examination.
For this reason, they face many problems about their financial condition to come back without any good consequences.
Therefore, it is the kind request to the Interior Minister to bring this concern into the test taking members of FIA to conduct the physical examination in any district of Makran division so that the aspiring candidates can feel comfortable to not face any bad consequences without not being selected. Hope the honourable Minister will listen!AZEEM ABDULLAHTurbat, Makran

Album reviews: KSI All Over the Place and Willow Lately I Feel Everything – MSN UK

Sam Neill
KSIs new album is a bumper-to-bumper blending of genres buoyed along by some of musics major-leaguers
KSI All Over the Place
Theres a handful of reasons you may have encountered KSI. Long-time fans will remember him as a 15-year-old kid uploading videos of himself playing Fifa to YouTube, where he has since amassed more than 30 million subscribers. Or it could be thanks to his hugely hyped boxing match against rival YouTuber Logan Paul in 2019. Its less likely that youll know KSI as a rapper.
That being said, the Hertfordshire-born artist real name Olajide Olatunji has been chipping away at the musical side of things for some time now. The most promising of these efforts came last year with his solo album Dissimulation, a surprisingly good debut from someone bearing the omen of Youtuber-turned-rapper. KSIs second record All Over the Place is more of the same, in the sense that it, too, is a bumper-to-bumper blending of genres buoyed along by some of musics major-leaguers.
There are highlights on the album, for sure. As with Dissimulation, KSI does well to allow his collaborators to come in and do what they do best in their respective styles. Silly is a confidently swaggering grime track featuring Bugzy Malone. Anne Marie injects some levity plus a sing-along hook into Dont Play With Me. And its very easy to see the nostalgic Craig David dance track Really Love playing on repeat this summer.
Gallery: U2s worst songs (Espresso)
At times, though, All Over The Place flails in the absence of a singular distinct voice. Portions of the album feel anonymous a mushy amalgamation that sounds vaguely like all trap-pop in the charts right now. Still, its significant that KSI a relative newcomer who has successfully flipped billions of video views into millions of Spotify streams holds his own among his many, many collaborators. KSI sounds like a musician. He may be able to drop that YouTuber prefix from his name after all.
Willow Lately I Feel EVERYTHING
Back in 2014, Willow Smith and her brother Jaden gave a mind-melting interview in which they discussed everything from theoretical physics to prana energy. Shes clearly into the idea of reincarnation, too. On her rollicking new album, Lately I Feel EVERYTHING, shes killed off her 2019 psychedelic soul persona and returned as an emo-pop star.
At first, it might seem like Smith is jumping on a trend led by teenage stars Olivia Rodrigo and Meet Me at the Altar. But her love for this genre runs deep at school she was bullied for listening to Paramore and My Chemical Romance. Gaslight is a breathless joyride that unleashes frustration on a potential romantic partner for sending mixed signals. Grow is all crashing symbols (an emo-punk staple) and thrashy guitars theres even a guest appearance from pop-punk queen herself, Avril Lavigne. Other influences creep in: Rihannas Kiss It Better lingers in the background of the sultry Dont Save Me, while Breakout is pure White Stripes, replete with chugging guitar hook and Smiths squalling Jack White impersonation.
Critics have complained that Smiths earlier albums dont reveal much more than we already know about the daughter of Hollywood superstars Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. While I think female artists are often penalised for trying to maintain an artistic level of mystique (Prince and Bowie didnt have this problem), Smiths new record does feel like her most personal. Her lyrics have a stream-of-consciousness style, as though shes in the middle of composing a message to a friend or partner. The delight she takes in performing these songs is palpable. I hope this incarnation of Smith sticks around a little longer.

How Scrybe Streaming Is Disrupting the Music Industry, Interview With CEO Christian Phyfier – The Ritz Herald
Posted: at 1:05 pm
This past June, Christian Phyfier and his All Star team of developers launched a new streaming company onto the App Store. From recording studios, to marketing and prepaid legal services, Scrybe Streaming is one of many music focused companies Christian has developed over the last decade built to assist artists in their growth, development and freedom.
We had a moment to sit with Christian and get insight into what the vision and overall goal of Scrybe is.
Why Scrybe and why now?
Ive been building the business model for Scrybe for 4 years. Thinking of the perfect solution to the issues that the music industry has been facing since the era of CDs left. The largest issue on the creative side of the music industry is that independent artists & labels have lost the ability to place value on the content they create. On streaming apps, an artists music is licensed and they are told how much they get paid per stream. On youtube an artists videos are licensed and the artist is told how much they get paid per view. Theres no way of understanding how, or why its simply told to them and the artist has no choice but to accept it, or never be heard.
Scrybe is freedom. Back in the day an artist could make an album and charge $10 and sell it out of their trunk and survive. A label could let the artist keep their performance and merchandise revenue because the records could sell enough where things could be a little more fair. Nowadays artists are slaves to touring and shows. Slaves to other forms of revenue or needing a big engine to help them pop through the surface to generate enough revenue monthly to provide for their lifestyle and simply survive. That is what Ive found, a lot of artists, like most people, simply would like to survive by doing what they enjoy. Fame is cool, but if they can pay their bills first, then they can focus on the fame after.
How is Scrybe different?
Scrybe was designed with the artist in mind from the moment it was conceived. Unlike most companies that are thinking about their bottom line and increasing the experience for the listeners and fans, who pay the subscription rates, we wanted to increase the functionality for the artist.
First, artists control how much their music is worth to the audience. Thats the number one thing. Take Drake as an example, if he were to convert his 50 million Spotify monthly listeners, to paying .10 cents a month on Scrybe, he would make 5 million dollars a month. Thats nearly the same pay that other platforms pay for 1.5 billion streams, and to earn that again, artists would need to raise another 1.5 billion streams. Scrybe is recurring regardless of streams.
Second, artists will be able to receive their payouts monthly. Artists need their revenue to survive, pay their bills etc. Waiting for 3 months is not the business.
While there are plenty of other benefits, the last one Ill mention is that we allow direct to platform distribution. Artists can upload their music directly to Scrybe. I owned a distribution service for the last two years, and realized there are so many hidden issues within distribution that artists dont know about, and so we want to be clear and direct with earnings.
You mentioned how all of this works for the artist but what about the listener, are things pretty much the same as other streaming companies?
No, definitely not. With fans we have helped them save money on their music streaming. Other streaming companies charge one flat rate for all the music on their platform. Music that most will never hear.
With Scrybe, fans only pay for the artists or podcasts they want to hear. For as little as $1 someone can have more than 1000 songs. Back to my example, if youre a Drake fan and he places his entire catalogue for .10 cents a month, then you just gained 100 plus songs. If youre not a drake fan and you only want to subscribe to 1 song at .01 cent a month then so be it. If that song gets old, unsubscribe. Its that simple. Similar to audible and listening to books instead of purchasing every book you need.
Lastly, we have focused heavily on the users experience, we promise commercial free streaming for all users. Even the free users simply browse the free music that artists release. The only promotion a user may experience are from songs that we feel the user may enjoy.
Where do you see Scrybe within the next few years?
I see Scrybe expanding big time. I cant say much because its being built as we speak but it will be a leader in the industry, hell It already supports podcasts. But I see us making things back into an open market, where creators are free again. Id love to continue to find ways to allow creators to invest in their financial futures and the entire music industry as a whole.
Scrybe for IOS is officially in the App Store for listeners, fans and artists to download at the link below, and podcasts and musicians are all capable of uploading their content via the website ScrybeStreaming.com.

Best iOS and Android apps we used in 2021 (so far) – Mashable

Yes, everyone downloaded TikTok this year. But there are plenty of other iOS and Android apps worth using.
Whether we needed to chill out, do some work, or get some fresh air, here are the best apps that the Mashable staff used in 2021.
Angi launched in March 2021, but it may be familiar to some. Formerly known as Angie's List or HomeAdvisor, the app connects people with local contractors and home services such as plumbing, landscaping, and electrical work. Shopping for contractors is an absolute pain, but Angi makes the process just a little bit easier, and lets you see real reviews and ratings from professionals in your area. The quotes are free to you, but keep in mind that Angi charges contractors every time they bid on a project.

Every city thinks its local radio station is the best in the world. But L.A. locals might be right. KCRW DJs spotlight both local and international artists, play live shows, and serve as music supervisors for movies and TV shows.
Luckily, anyone around the world can listen to KCRW programming for free with the station's app. What does that get you? The KCRW app features the excellent "Eclectic 24" channel. As the DJs note on air, this is curated by humans, not algorithms and therefore isn't influenced by money from record labels.
The app has been around for a while, but as of this spring, it became compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Does anyone of a certain (younger) age even own a home printer/scanner anymore? The good ones cost way too much to justify the rare usage and the cheap ones are, well, cheap and prone to breaking down.
So, let's give a collective thanks to Google for making the most of our Android phones and putting the power of a scanner in a convenient app called Stack. Now, scans are as simple as pointing your phone at a document and taking a picture. Stack will convert the image to PDF, and give you the tools to sharpen and crop it. And, since this is a Google app, it's seamlessly integrated into all of your GSuite services, so sharing, uploading, and labeling that scanned doc is only a few taps away.

Forest (iOS, Android)
An oldie but a goodie, Forest which helps people become less dependent on their phones remains my favorite productivity app. Set a desired number of minutes you want to focus, and Forest will lock your phone screen while a virtual tree grows in your app. When the tree grows to completion you can use your device again, and youll earn coins that you can save and use to plant real trees in Africa, thanks to a partnership with the nonprofit Trees for the Future.

White Noise Lite is the only app that's never let me down. It isn't new, but it's literally the only app I could not live without. Quite simply, it plays white noises for me a fake AC that drown out outside sounds to aid sleep. The app has been a godsend during a strange year, during which good rest was tough to come by. If you're a light sleeper, its an amazing, simple tool to get a better night's sleep.

I've been using Aloe Bud since 2018, and it's the only app that makes practicing self-care feel like less of a chore. It allows you to set daily reminders to stay hydrated, fuel up with a snack, move your body, and more, and encourages you to check-in via your personal dashboard whenever you complete an activity.
In a world where most of us are stuck at our desks for a majority of our days, it can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves both mentally and physically. But Aloe Bud's gentle nudges make the experience less judgmental and more positive than other self-care apps I've used in the past. Plus its super retro aesthetic is the cherry on top.

The new National Park Service app has info on more than 400 national parks in the U.S., and even lets you reserve campsites where available. Plus, you can use it offline, so you can access maps, visitor guides, and more in remote areas with no cellphone reception. Keith Wagstaff, Tech Editor
Startup Carbon Health developed a streamlined way to set up COVID-19 tests and get results. That includes COVID tests needed for travel.

Not a new app, but new to me. Really easy UI for tracking walking/running for beginners.

Prontonn receives USD 9 million of funding – Inventiva

The COVID 19 had a disastrous impact on the economy. It felt as if the economy went into shatter after going through the deadly lockdown. The lockdown was imposed keeping in mind the safety of the citizens and was a need of that time, but the economy couldnt handle the negative effects of it. There were no customers to avail of any service or buy a product, the operations of the businesses were closed. For many of them, the time was so unfortunate that they had to shut down their offices and businesses. With no funds to carry on, closing the business seemed the best option available.
But now, slowly the economy is waking up from the hibernation in which it went during the lockdown. The businesses have started their operations and the customers are now less hesitant to step out of their homes. Many of the startups were started during the lockdown phase but were in the baby stage of ideation, they too have now started receiving funding. In Defence of HIKAI – The Shillong Times
Posted: at 1:05 pm
By Banlam K Lyngdoh
Of late HIKAI, an online educational portal, launched by RKM Ashrama, Sohra, in collaboration with Vivekananda Cultural Centre (VCC), Shillong, has been publicly debated on its pros and cons. Thanks are due to Dushyant Wadhwan, who has gone the extra mile in attempting to dissect HIKAI (albeit superficially), in his letter to this newspaper captioned HIKAI a headache for teachers (ST, 12/07/2021). As an insider and a teacher involved in HIKAI, after giving a serious reading of Wadhwans observations, I feel it is important to put things in clearer perspectives.HIKAI is an immediate and timely response to the sudden halt of normal schooling following the onslaught of the Covid pandemic in 2020. RKM Ashrama Sohra, has over 10,000 students under its wings and it is imperative that these young minds should not suffer collateral damage as far as their education is concerned. It is proven, historically and psychologically that any continued and major disruption of normal life affects children not only in the present but also has the potential to make them future losers in many fronts of life. Left unattended and unengaged with mind building activities, children are prone to go wayward and hence their vibrant energy gets channelized into unwanted ends.Though started in 2020, it is only this year that HIKAI has been implemented in full throttle. Last year the portal was operated on a trial-error method (technically speaking) where pre-recorded videos on different subjects were available for the students to watch. Submission of assignments was not overstressed because offline teaching was also allowed by October-November, and the term end exams also could be conducted offline. However, the Covid trend now seems to reinvent and linger, putting the student community in disarray. This has motivated the Ashrama in Sohra and the VCC in Shillong to modify and upgrade the portal enabling both students and teachers to study and work from home so that a semblance of serious work for teachers and educational engagement for students is in place and constructive and consequential results (not only academic, per se) achieved. But this is not to say that acceptance and success should come overnight. It is too early to make a judgment call on HIKAI. Even now HIKAI is in an evolving mode. But whatever is said, the point that this portal is created for the sole benefit of students should not be understated and overlooked. If we are ready to accept that this is for our children, then whatever we would have to say would be only towards its enhancement.Yes, one may find some aspects of the endeavour to be wanting. Firstly, connectivity is a serious circumstantial issue. But this should not be a stumbling block. Gradually the mind-set of both parents and students should change and once the mind-set changes a hurdle is just something to be overcome. If parents accede that this is for the future of their wards, then they too should try to leave no stone unturned in seeing that their children derive the most from it. A friend, a relative somewhere is there to help. Questions can be downloaded and sent across. Students on their part can write a heap of assignments on a weekly basis and travel to the other end of a village where connectivity is good and ask a friend or a relative or a well-wisher to help in uploading them. Surely it takes a village to raise a child. You will see that when you desire for anything intensely, the entire universe collaborates to make it happen. Impediments will always be there for a new thing to function and it takes the cooperation of all stakeholders to make it a success. I reiterate on the change of mind-set, because this is the only way for any initiative to become a blessing. If in Meghalaya, this mindset change had not taken place when education was offered to the local two centuries ago, where would we be? Then poverty was rampant coupled with superstition. But because gradually peoples perspectives changed, we are now where we are.Secondly, most teachers are rural based who havent faced the camera in their entire life until very recently. Some of them are on the verge of retirement and to whom modern gadgets are rather an encumbrance. They never dreamt that they would experience such a drastic change. But desperate times call for desperate measures. In spite of their camera shyness and clumsiness with the tools, they are trying their best for the sake of the students, and in the process exposing themselves to the judgment of all and sundry. Believe me, we may be good and fluent educators speaking with confidence in the class room, but we may be found stuttering in front of the camera. As mentioned above, we are evolving.Nothing can be further from the truth than to say that HIKAI is a headache for teachers. A workload may be, but certainly not a headache. Since Mr Wadhwan has spoken personally to one teacher, whose views he values and shares with the world, let me also be personal. In fact, I encourage students to send their raw footage to me. I continue giving them instructions over phone or WhatsApp. If that doesnt suffice I offer to help them. And I know of many RKM teachers who do this. Only a day before I got a call from one teacher in Zakabari who wanted clarification on a certain assignment of the subject I teach. He told me that he and the teachers in his school help the students in everything except (he joked) on writing their assignments. And one thing is worth mentioning here. It is not that the management monitors our work from home. We may sit in front of the screen following the normal school hours or we may burn the midnight oil, thats up to us. But that the management should know that both teachers and students are sincere, a minimum submission of 80% of the assignments is a must.Which brings me to my last point, why 80%? In normal school mode, generally schools make 80% attendance a criterion for students to be allowed to sit for a term end exam. Irrespective of students performance in other domains, they have to satisfy this condition. Regularity reflects sincerity and responsibility. But considering the newness of the programme and the direness of the times, this demand is never made draconian in HIKAI. Yes pressure is given to all stakeholders but that too by extending and re-extending the deadline. All students were made to understand before the first term online exam, that they were eligible to appear only on submission of 80% assignments. Most students didnt comply. Yet all were allowed to appear for the exam. We gave the defaulters a chance to still submit their assignments before publishing their results. Those who complied got their results. But for defaulters we extended the deadline further and further and further to the extent that teachers are overburdened with correction of both first term and second term assignments. Why so much trouble? Is it not that we want to see all children through considering theirs and their parents lack of resources? All we are doing is creating avenues for the horses to be taken to the water. Whether they bend down to drink or not its a different matter, and here a modicum of students sincerity or insincerity becomes apparent. But one should not be blamed or critiqued for showing them or taking them to the water.(The writer teaches at RKM HS School, Sohra. Email [emailprotected])

The Echo Show 10 Is The Only Smart Display That Follows Every Step Of The Way – MensXP.com
Posted: at 1:05 pm
Smart Displays are getting more advanced than you think - thats the first thing that will come to your mind when you see the Echo Show 10. Its not like any other smart display because it can automatically swirl around, thanks to its motorised base and an extremely accurate camera. The Echo Show 10 reminds me more of R2D2 from Star Wars than anything else Ive experienced yet. Ive been using the Echo Show 10 for the past two weeks and heres what I think about Amazons latest smart display.
The Echo Show 10 looks like a regular smart display from afar, however you soon realise its 360-degree nature once you come close to it. The smart display can rotate itself automatically using the 13-megapixel camera and far-field microphones to get your precise location. The rotating feature comes particularly handy when you are following a recipe in the kitchen and moving about. It also comes in handy when you are in a video call and need to move around. The Echo Show 10s automatic rotating feature keeps everything in frame whether you are watching a video on Prime Video/Netflix or having a chat with family.
MensXP_Akshay Bhalla
In my usage, the motion tracking feature worked extremely accurately. Whether I moved left or right the display always kept up with me. Having said that, the motion feature will not work properly if there isnt enough light in the room. Having said that, if there was an additional person in the room, the Echo Show 10 would get confused at times especially if the other person is walking in the opposite direction.
MensXP_Akshay Bhalla
You can disable the motion feature if you find it creepy. It can be disabled either from the drop-down menu from the top or you can simply tell Alexa to stop following you. Other commands such as Alexa, follow me, Alexa, turn right, or Alexa, turn off motion also gets the job done. Whats great is that the rotating feature can also be used manually i.e you can manually turn the display left or right even when motion is turned off. You can also tilt the display up or down depending on your viewing angle.
For privacy concerns, the Echo Show 10 comes with a mute microphone button much like other Alexa devices. Whats more important is that there is a physical shutter you can use to cover up the camera on the top-right corner.
MensXP_Akshay Bhalla
The 10.1-inch screen is also much brighter and sharper than before. You can also adjust the displays brightness and colour according to the ambience of the room. Overall, the display quality is great for people who would use it in a kitchen or a living room to catch up on the latest episode of their favourite TV show or take video calls. The displays quality is not on the same level as tablets but then again I dont see people using it like one either.
The Echo Show 10 does have a massive audio driver below the display that also overhangs to the back. Its got a pair of 1-inch front-firing tweeters and a 3-inch woofer that fires low-frequency sounds out the top. While the speaker is great for viewing videos and watching security cameras, it doesnt really match up to the Sonos One or other audio-focused smart speakers.
Amazon
Having said that, being a smart display, the audio quality isnt really the priority here. Its still a very capable speaker as it can get really loud. You can even pair the smart display with the Echo Sub if you are looking for a better audio experience. You can also stream music to the Echo Show 10 using Bluetooth, however I recommend streaming music over WiFi and your dedicated streaming app. Thankfully, Alexa devices support Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Gaana and other major streaming services natively.
The Echo Show 10 can do almost everything a regular Alexa can do. You can control your smart lights and other smart home devices with your voice. However, since it also has a display, you can use the touchscreen to manually control each smart home device from the control panel. You can also view security cameras if Alexa supports them. You can use security cameras from both Xiaomi and Realme by connecting them as a skill and view footage directly on the Echo Show 10s screen. Its a shame that Amazon doesnt sell Ring products in India at the moment since the Echo Show 10 feels like it was tailor-made for the ecosystem.
Amazon
Being a smart display, you can also use it as a digital photo gallery. However, uploading photos from the Alexa app is quite convoluted and not as streamlined as Google Photos for the Nest Hub devices. Since the Echo Show 10 has a beautiful display, its a shame that I cannot use it as a digital photo gallery like I can on the Google Nest Hub.
In terms of smart home commands, Alexa has always been faster and more reliable than Google Assistant and the case remains the same here. The Echo Show 10 is as responsive as any Echo device from Amazons catalogue.
The Echo Show 10 is by far the most innovative smart display Ive seen yet. Its motorised display is a game-changer for users who like to do video calls or be on the move. Having said that, if you only rely on the Echo for smart home controls or listening to music, the Echo Show 10 may not be for you. For Rs 24,999, the Echo Show 10 has a very specific use case, for example video calling, reading recipes while you cook, and watching videos when youre not stationary. If youre already invested in the Echo ecosystem, then the Echo Show 10 might be a great addition to your smart-home setup.

Who is Baby J? BTS responds to rumors, debuts Permission to Dance on Jimmy Fallon show – MEAWW
Posted: at 1:05 pm
With the release of their latest English single Permission to Dance, BTS has been taking the world by storm. Appearing at several events like the Louis Vuitton fashion show, the seven-member K-pop group has been booked and busy. They also happen to be gracing a two-day takeover event on the late-night talk show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
With Fallon always going all out and keeping things interesting whenever the boys appear on his show, expectations for the musical takeover were high. However, Day 1 was as fun and engaging as it can get. BTS had their TV debut of Permission to Dance as they performed it for the first time on the talk show. They also sat down to have a chat with Fallon.

2021 FNS Summer Song Festival: Date, how to watch show boasting BTS and Enhypen in lineup
While the music video for Permission to Dance had been retro with BTS dressed up in country outfits, dancing in the Wild West, the TV performance was polar opposite. They wore casual outfits that focused on their youthful appearance. The performance took place in an empty mall filled with purple balloons that symbolized their fans. Fans were also touched that the balloons were in different shades of purple just like the skin colors of BTS' various fans from all over the world.
Watch the performance below:
After the performance, the boys were interviewed by Fallon through a video call. The segment was full of behind stories and tidbits about the boys. There were several cute moments that fans couldnt get over and ended up trending it on Twitter. While Jin and Jungkook had to do a pose in an A formation, the latter said that it was easy peasy lemon squeezy which everyone found endearing.
There was also a moment when Fallon showed a throwback photo of BTS during one of their concerts. While RM found it funny that he was wearing sunglasses in a dark hall, Jimin and V jokingly closed their eyes because they were embarrassed due to the outfits and hair. BTS also celebrated and cheered with Fallon on the fact that Butter had stayed #1 on Billboard Hot 100 for 7 weeks in a row.
Additionally, Fallon came up with a segment where the group had to react to BTS rumors. Several of them also turned out to be true. Before their fandom was called ARMY, RM agreed that they were almost called BELL. Fallon also asked Jimin what were his choices for his stage name when he was about to debut. Jimin revealed that it was either 'Baby G' or 'Baby J'. But he found it weird that every time he would have to introduce himself he would have to say Hi, Im Baby J. Fallon recommended that he could always go with 'Jimin Fallon' which Jimin loved.
The next rumor was about V auditioning for BTS. Apparently, V never was going to audition and he was just accompanying his friend. When Fallon asked what happened to the friend, V answered that he failed. V happily announced that only he made it and RM stated that looks like V stands for victory. During Jins turn, the idol ended up inviting Fallon over. The question was whether Jin was the best chef amongst the members. Jin replied that he felt everyone had similar skills but if Fallon was ever in South Korea, he would cook for him.
Fallon also addressed Sugas love for Eminem and whether an Eminem CD was the first album that he ever bought. Turns out Suga was indeed a huge fan of the rapper. The BTS member replied that he really loved Eminem and since there were no Korean translations at that time, that was the only reason his parents didnt mind it. Finally, J-Hope was asked if he truly considered himself to be the most fashionable member since they were tons of running jokes on the matter. Gleefully, j-hope replied that he absolutely was. RM also added that the most surprising thing they found out in their eight years together was that V sleeps with his eyes open.
Since there was a time limit, it looks like RM and Jungkooks questions were cut. However, with the fans demands, Fallon might end up uploading it on their social media. Fans did find it funny that Fallon played it safe by not asking about serious rumors and questions and commended him for keeping it light and funny.
One fan tweeted, Its the way they put different shades of purple balloons all around the set, im so inlove. One jokingly tweeted, Imagine being bts and hearing i wanna talk about bts rumors. Another fan tweeted about the performance, THAT WAS EVERYTHING.
