Kitsap’s interim sheriff didn’t sign letter supporting Second Amendment, but said he would have – Kitsap Sun

Posted: July 23, 2021 at 3:58 am

A letter released last week and signed by 37 of the states 39 sheriffs affirming their commitment to steadfastly protect'' the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, along with other individual rights, does not bear the signature of Kitsap County's interim sheriff.

However, John Gese, who is hoping for the appointment to fill out the remainder of former Sheriff Gary Simpson's term after Gese servedasundersheriff, said if he had permanent status he would have likely signed the letter from the Washington State Sheriffs' Association.

If appointed sheriff I would feel some motivation to go ahead and sign it, said Gese. He said he was committed to upholding all the amendments of the Constitution, but would have wanted to allay fears of gun owners who feel the right to keep and bear arms has been threatened.

I dont see the government coming around and taking guns, but that is a concern with our people out there, Gese said.

Since Simpson filed as a Democrat and left office early to retire at the end of last month, the county Democratic party will forward to county commissioners a list of three possible replacements. Commissioners will pick a candidate to serve until the end of 2022, the remainder of Simpsons term. Commissioners must interview and select a replacement sheriff 60 days from July 1, the day after Simpson's last day.

If Gese is ultimately selected, despite not yet standing for election, he would have the same status as though he were elected.

Though meaningful gun control measures have not fared well at the national level, voters in Washington state -- and in Kitsap County -- have supported strengthening restrictions on gun ownership.

In 2018 about 59 percent of voters statewide -- and about 57 percent of Kitsap County voters -- approved Initiative 1639. This measure added to state law multiple restrictions on buying and owning firearms. Among them are the addition of background checks, age limits, increased waiting periods and storage requirements.

After the success of the measure at the polls, some sheriffs and police chiefs voiced their opposition and announced they would not enforce the new law. This drewa rebuke from state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who noted that state laws are presumed constitutional until struck down in court, according to a Ballotpedia entry on the measure.

"If you personally disagree with Initiative 1639, seek to change it. Or file a lawsuit challenging it," Ferguson wrote in a statement."But do not substitute your personal views over that of the people. As public officers, our duty is to abide by the will of the people we serve, and implement and enforce the laws they adopt."

The statement includes the signature of Mason County Sheriff Casey Salisbury and Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer.

"We hereby recognize a significant principle underlying the Second Amendment: The right to keep and bear arms is indispensable to the existence of a free people," the letter says.

Beside Gese, the only other county sheriff missing from the list is King County Sheriff Mitzi Johanknecht. Though Johanknecht is elected, King County wont have an elected sheriff for long. Last year voters there approved a measure to have the county council appoint and oversee the countys sheriff, much like city governments hire and oversee police chiefs.

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett, who serves as vice-president of the Washington State Sheriffs' Association and drafted the letter, said he heard from constituents concerned about threats to gun rights. After seeing a similar letter signed by the sheriffs in the state of Utah he got the idea to replicate it in Washington state.

People want to know their concerns are being heard, Burnett said.

The statement contains religious overtones, stating that the Constitution is divinely inspired.

Further, the sheriffs wrote: We understand the destructive influences currently existing in our country will only relent when women and men everywhere genuinely care for each other. We must rely on Providence and care deeply about preserving the Constitution and its freedoms in order to be a strong and prosperous people.

Burnett said this statement was meant to oppose further gun control measures. He said the states sheriffs did not object to the religious language -- though he said others have attacked him over the language and accused of imposing his beliefs on others.

Burnett denied this, saying the assertions regarding God and the Constitution were supported by the writings and speeches of the framers of the Constitution and that, further, the First Amendment meant that all religious expression would be protected.

Sheriffs dont always agree on everything, Burnett said, but he said there was solidarity over the letter.

Sen. Cramer, Colleagues File on Amicus Brief to Protect Americans’ Second Amendment Rights – Kevin Cramer

WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in filing anamicusbrief forNew York StateRifle& Pistol Association v. Bruen,a case currently pending beforetheU.S. Supreme Court.

Legislators whether in Albany or Washington, D.C. have neither the power nor the authority to second-guess the policy judgments made by the Framers and enshrined in the Constitution, the senators wrote. The Second Amendments guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms cannot be second-guessed by legislators across the country who simply disagree with the choice the Framers made.

The brief argues New Yorks laws which make it extremely difficult to carry a firearm outside the home violate the Second Amendments guarantee of the right to bear arms. It also emphasizes that by including the right to bear arms in the Constitution, the Framers made a policy choice and explicitly removed from state and federal legislators the ability to second guess that choice.

Senators Cramer and Cruz are joined on theamicusbrief by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senators John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), John Boozman (R-AR), Mike Braun (R-IN), John Cornyn (R-TX), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Steve Daines (R-MT), Josh Hawley (R-MO), John Hoeven (R-ND), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Ron Johnson (R-WI), James Lankford (R-OK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Jim Risch (R-ID), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rick Scott (R-FL), andThom Tillis (R-NC).

Pro-gun Iowans say 2nd Amendment sanctuaries can keep rights from being ‘chipped away at’ – Local 5 – weareiowa.com

Posted: at 3:57 am

So far, two Iowa counties have passed resolutions saying county employees can't enforce state or federal laws infringing on a person's 2nd Amendment rights.

JOHNSTON, Iowa At CrossRoads Shooting Sports in Johnston, Ethan Settle takes pride in educating people on how to safely use firearms.

"My absolute favorite customer to deal with is that first-time gun owner," Settle said. "And we can talk them through the process of owning that."

The store manager also says employees help educate patrons about their Second Amendment rights.

"We try to take a whole approach to firearms ownership, so you do it responsibly, safely, have fun, but know what your rights and your political duties constitutionally are," Settle said.

Nowadays, the conversations behind the counter at CrossRoads have included the topic of several Iowa counties' move to become 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries.

Recently, both Jasper and Hardin counties signed resolutions to oppose "any legislation that would infringe upon the constitutional right of the people...to keep and bear arms."

That means county employees cannot enforce state or federal laws infringing on a person's Second Amendment rights, but it only applies to future laws--not existing ones.

As several other counties, including Madison, look to sign similar resolutions, Settle applauds Iowans who have spoken directly to their counties' boards of supervisors to advocate for them.

"The issue of sanctuary counties has been around for a number of years now and its really picked up speed since the November election, and just a lot about people being engaged with their local county governments," Settle said. "What I think is cool about it, is its people getting out, voicing their concerns with their local county governments."

The Iowa Firearms Coalition provides templates for Iowa counties to draft resolutions protecting the Second Amendment. Chair Michael Ware says the nonprofit aims to be a resource to educate Iowans on the issue.

"We say, heres the template, heres some working language, these are some [recommendations and] best practices," Ware said. "They're saying, listen. This civil right, we care about. And we know that its one that gets curtailed, chipped away at, and discussed a lot."

A spokesperson for the ACLU of Iowa said it was not clear from the facts available on how the sanctuary status could be interpreted as a civil rights issue.

Moms Demand Action, a group that works to end gun violence, also weighed in on the matter. In an email, they sent the following statement:

Local politicians dont get to pick and choose which laws to enforce. These resolutions are largely symbolic and wont directly interfere with the enforcement of critical gun safety laws its clear that they are nothing more than a political game by local politicians to signal their support for the gun lobby, said Traci Kennedy, Chapter Leader of the Iowa chapter of Moms Demand Action. Instead of passing confusing resolutions, our leaders should focus on solutions that will help keep our families safe and pass laws and resolutions that acknowledge and address the crisis of gun violence in our state.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors will discuss a similar resolution at their meeting July 27.

Letter from 37 Washington sheriffs letter pledges support of 2nd Amendment, other rights – MyNorthwest.com

Posted: at 3:57 am

(KIRO 7)

The vast majority of county sheriffs in Washington have signed a new letter promising to uphold your constitutional rights. But it is up to the sheriffs to decide what is constitutional and whats not.

Its an anxious time for those who are worried about retaining their gun rights. An anxious time for those unhappy that COVID-19 safety rules may restrict individual freedoms.

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett led the effort that got 37 of Washingtons 39 sheriffs to sign a letter pledging to abide by their oath of office.

The message we want to send is, one, is we want to minimize their fear, and we want to put them at ease, he said.

In the letter, the sheriffs publicly reassert our individual and collective duty to defend all of the constitutional rights of our citizens.

But during the pandemic, some sheriffs have refused to enforce COVID-19 safety mandates. And in the past few years, some sheriffs have publicly announced they wont enforce newly passed gun safety laws.

The sheriffs letter explicitly calls out gun rights, stating, We individually and collectively pledge to do everything within our power to steadfastly protect the Second Amendment and all other individual rights.

Burnett said constitutionality should be decided by the courts, but there could be a time down the road where the sheriffs may have to decide as the chief law enforcement executives of their counties that they would say this is what we are or we arent going to enforce.

KIRO 7 TV spoke with constitutional lawyer Jeffery Needle about the letter.

Its dangerous because it shows an extreme bias by the sheriffs of Washington state in favor of Second Amendment rights, he said.

Needle said the letter implies that sheriffs have power that the law does not give them.

They dont have some sort of unilateral power to determine which legislation is constitutional, which is not. And enforce only those that they believe are constitutional, he added.

Burnett said there was no one piece of legislation that prompted the letter. This year, the Legislature passed a new law banning the open carry of weapons at permitted demonstrations.

Only the sheriffs of King and Kitsap counties did not sign the letter. Both are in transitional roles. The King County Sheriff will become an appointed position at the end of the year.

Norton Files Amendments to Allow Marijuana Use in Public Housing, Combat Aircraft Noise, and Block SEC from Entering into Lease for Headquarters -…

Posted: at 3:57 am

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today four amendments she has filed to fiscal year 2022 appropriations bills. The House Rules Committee will consider the amendments next week.

Nortons first amendment would prohibit the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from using its funds to enforce the prohibition on marijuana in federally assisted housing in jurisdictions where recreational marijuana is legal. The second amendment would prohibit HUD from using its funds to enforce the prohibition on medical marijuana in jurisdictions where medical marijuana is legal. Cannabis Caucus Co-Chairs Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) are cosponsors of both amendments. Earlier this Congress, Norton reintroduced her bill to permit marijuana in federally assisted housing in jurisdictions where it is legal. Norton has also sent a letter to HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge asking her to use executive discretion to not enforce the prohibition on marijuana in federally assisted housing in jurisdictions where it is legal.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development should not be allowed to remove people from their homes or otherwise punish them for following the marijuana laws of their jurisdictions, Norton said. More and more states are moving toward legalization of marijuana, especially of medical marijuana. It is time for HUD to follow the rest of the country and allow marijuana use in federally assisted housing in jurisdictions where it is legal. This should especially be the case for individuals living in jurisdictions that have legalized medical marijuana. Nobody should be evicted for following the law and the advice of their doctors.

Nortons third amendment would direct the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to prioritize efforts to combat airplane and helicopter noise. While the FAA and the aviation industry face many high-profile challenges, aircraft noise, which causes disruption to human health and local economies, is often overlooked. As co-chair of the Quiet Skies Caucus, I have been leading members for many years to get the FAA to take aircraft noise seriously, Norton said. As a result of aircraft noise, Americans suffer from sleep disruption, exacerbation of high blood pressure and other chronic diseases, and learning loss in schools.

Nortons fourth amendment would prohibit the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from using its funds to enter directly into leases for a headquarters. Nortons amendment would effectively return the SECs leasing authority to the General Services Administration (GSA), the federal governments real estate arm. As a former chair and ranking member of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management, Norton led oversight of the SECs real estate activities.

For three decades, the SEC has consistently stumbled through leasing mistakes at great expense to taxpayers, Norton said. It is incredibly inefficient, wasteful, and redundant for the SEC to be involved in the nuances of real estate decisions when GSA exists for that very reason.Like other federal agencies, the SEC should continue to have input and involvement in the decision-making process, but the ultimate real estate authority should lie with GSA, where it belongs. Earlier this Congress, Norton introduced a bill to revoke the SECs leasing authority and return it to GSA.

Short rant. I cannot believe how many people hate JP.

I have been listening to lectures by JP almost every day for the past 2 years. I dont care if I repeat them, they always serve me well. I started implementing his philosophy into my life.in the last two years I obtained a health care job in a career I have an education for, have received 2 raises and have been given full time hours. It took me 2 years to get the same wage and authority as my female coworkers who have been there for 5+ years (Im a male dental hygienist). I have improved my relationship with my father, and my life in general is on a steep incline that seems to be working well for me. I am happy most of the time, and when Im not, Im not getting burdened by anger and regret; simply frustration and a desire to remedy the problem.

However, my heart recently broke when I had a talk with my father. He is a left-wing Canadian who hates anything to do with the right. Anyone who identifies as right leaning gets the arbitrary label right wing nut job from him and even my own mother cannot stand him when he catches wind of political news because his reactions are immature and predictable. Thats not what hurt.

What hurt is that he finally asked me how I managed to get my shit together so well. I told him about JP, and that I was so excited to finally listen to and understand truth in a way that could benefit me and those around me.

To my chagrin, my father immediately dismissed JP as a right wing nut job. I begged him to listen to some of his interviews or lectures to better understand what he was saying. Instead my father found every sound bite possible of people who hate JP taking him out of context. When I point out how ridiculous it is to think he could be saying anything other than genuine truthful help, my father goes on about how he pushes religion and says you cant have a religious experience without magic mushrooms. I cant believe my own father is listening to this man and only hearing things he hates. Hell ignore a 10 min clip to focus on one sentence and dismiss Peterson afterwards.

Then I came on Reddit to find that theres a whole sub dedicated to straight up hating JP, taking him out of context, and making light of anything he says whatsoever.

Why does my idiot father want to hate JP so much? Why are there a colossal amount of people who havent extracted a single positive message from JP?

My real life is going great, everyone always asks me how I managed to get where I am in just 2 years but when I tell them I changed my mindset because of JP and they look him up, they dismiss him. Ask how I solved my problems dismiss the only answerwhy are so many people not only dismissive but hateful of a person who has helped so many?

It makes me weep for the future.

Jordan Peterson, Custodian of the Patriarchy – The New …

Posted: at 3:56 am

The left, he believes, refuses to admit that men might be in charge because they are better at it. The people who hold that our culture is an oppressive patriarchy, they dont want to admit that the current hierarchy might be predicated on competence, he said.

Mr. Peterson illustrates his arguments with copious references to ancient myths bringing up stories of witches, biblical allegories and ancient traditions. I ask why these old stories should guide us today.

It makes sense that a witch lives in a swamp. Yeah, he says. Why?

Its a hard one.

Right. Thats right. You dont know. Its because those things hang together at a very deep level. Right. Yeah. And it makes sense that an old king lives in a desiccated tower.

But witches dont exist, and they dont live in swamps, I say.

Yeah, they do. They do exist. They just dont exist the way you think they exist. They certainly exist. You may say well dragons dont exist. Its, like, yes they do the category predator and the category dragon are the same category. It absolutely exists. Its a superordinate category. It exists absolutely more than anything else. In fact, it really exists. What exists is not obvious. You say, Well, theres no such thing as witches. Yeah, I know what you mean, but that isnt what you think when you go see a movie about them. You cant help but fall into these categories. Theres no escape from them.

Recently, a young man named Alek Minassian drove through Toronto trying to kill people with his van. Ten were killed, and he has been charged with first-degree murder for their deaths, and with attempted murder for 16 people who were injured. Mr. Minassian declared himself to be part of a misogynist group whose members call themselves incels. The term is short for involuntary celibates, though the group has evolved into a male supremacist movement made up of people some celibate, some not who believe that women should be treated as sexual objects with few rights. Some believe in forced sexual redistribution, in which a governing body would intervene in womens lives to force them into sexual relationships.

Violent attacks are what happens when men do not have partners, Mr. Peterson says, and society needs to work to make sure those men are married.

Meet the New New Atheists, Not Like the Old New Atheists – Discovery Institute

Posted: at 3:56 am

Photo credit: Derek Story via Unsplash.

Jonathon Van Maren atConviviumputs his fingeron an interesting phenomenon: the atheists and agnostics who are coming around to a pro-Christian view:

Not so long ago, the atheists who retreated to their Darwinian towers and bricked themselves up to fire arrows at the faithfulwantedto be there. Their intellectual siloes were a refuge from faith because they didnt want Christianity to be true. They hated it and thought wed be better off without it. Like [Christopher] Hitchens, they were thrilled to find arguments that permitted them to reject it.

These atheists are finding the Darwinian tower less to their liking, and are laying down their bow and arrow. Not because they doubt their atheism, or evolution for that matter. As John West and others have pointed out, Darwinian atheism has acorrosive effecton culture. But the theory, like atheism more broadly, could still be true and its influence would be no less corrosive.

I call this group the New New Atheists. We still have the loud and aggressive Old New Atheists around, folks like evolutionary biologist Jerry Coyne who think wed all be much better off without Christianity, or other faiths. But this seems increasingly like an old-fashioned position. Van Maren cites historian Niall Ferguson, philosopher Roger Scruton, writer Douglas Murray, social scientist Charles Murray, historian Tom Holland, and the famed Jordan Peterson as examples of agnostics or atheists who argue that the West without Christianity would be in serious trouble.

Christopher Hitchens wrote a book calledGod Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Published in 2007, that now seems like a time capsule. From the perspective of 2021, the spitefulness of the title sounds reactionary. More of the moment is Douglas Murray, who provocatively called himself a Christian atheist in afascinating conversationwith blogger Esther OReilly on Justin Brierleys podcastUnbelievable?

The view of people like this carries weight. Peterson has appeared to tremble on the edge of conversion, while withholding it from expectant observers for now. He may be a greater influence as he is. As OReillypoints out, the fact of Petersons not being a Christian disproportionately tilts ears in his direction right out of the gate.

Van Maren quotes Fergusson:

I know I cant achieve religious faith, he went on, but I do think we should go to church. We dont have, I dont think, an evolved ethical system. I dont buy the idea that evolution alone gets us to be moral. It can modify behavior, but theres just too much evidence that in the raw, when the constraints of civilization fall away, we behave in the most savage way to one another. Im a big believer that with the inherited wisdom of a two-millennia old religion, weve got a pretty good framework to work with. [Emphasis added.]

Arguably the Wests inherited wisdom can itself be explained in (loosely defined) evolutionary terms. Traditions dont survive for millennia because they areunfitto guide a healthy culture.

These atheists are only recognizing something that no small number of Jews also see Ben Shapiro, Dennis Prager, and Michael Medved, for example. They (and I) would agree with Fergusson that, when the constraints of civilization fall away and in the West, that means Christian civilization we behave in the most savage way to one another. Christianity is suited to the role of a religion for billions of people. Judaism,as Ive pointed out, is not well suited to that role. William Lane Craignotesthe paradoxical effectiveness of Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew, in pointing people to Christianity. Craig hassaid he was flabbergastedthat in an interview, Shapiro invited him to offer his personal testimony as a Christian and did not really argue with Craigs apologetic case. My instinct would have been to push back, but Shapiro was the wiser.

Something new, in any event, looks to be evolving, even if still on a modest scale. Weve been encouraged by the responses to Stephen Meyers new book,Return of the God Hypothesis, from self-described agnostics, Brian Keating, Michael Shermer, and James Croft, among otherscientists and scholars, a long way from the petulant jeering of the Old New Atheists. Perhaps Jonathon Van Marens observation helps to explain that too.

Universities should be safe spaces from assault and bodily harm, but not from ideas and opinions people might find offensive

Author of the article:

The University of Glasgow hit peak woke when it recently announced that it will be urging professors to avoid using the phrase trigger warning.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Professors have been advised to stop saying trigger warning before sensitive content is talked about because it could be too triggering for their thin-skinned students. Instead, theyve been asked to say content advisory prior to speaking about sensitive matters, in order to ensure U of G remains a safe space.

While this incident took place in the United Kingdom, Canadian schools are not immune to this type of thinking.

A group of current and former students at Ryerson Universitys School of Journalism caused an internal revolt in March, releasing an open letter that claimed the school had contributed to an unsafe learning environment because they were subjected to words and opinions they disapproved of. This letter was written after a group of students was frustrated by the facultys response to a human rights complaint that I initiated against the Eyeopener, one of Ryersons campus newspapers.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Likewise, for the past year, community members at Wilfrid Laurier University have called for professors David Haskell and William McNally to be fired for the crime of being conservative. Haskell and McNally have been vocal defenders of freedom of expression at Laurier, which the woke mob sees as unacceptable.

People might hope this safe-space culture would stop at the doors of universities, but it has extended into the work world, as well. This idea of not wanting to offend people contributed to the resignation of Bari Weiss, an opinion writer and editor at the New York Times, in 2020. Weiss said she was annoyed with how stories that didnt explicitly promote progressive causes needed to have every detail scrutinized before being published.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Employees at Penguin Random House Canada proclaimed in November that they were offended when it was announced that the company would be publishing Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. The employees said the book should not be published by Penguin because they did not want Petersons views to be platformed.

Universities should be safe spaces from assault and bodily harm, but not from ideas and opinions people might find offensive. The harmfulness of safe-space culture was explored at length in the 2018 book, The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

The authors said they wrote the book because they observed that students were pathologizing words and ideas as dangerous and violent, which they found illogical. This change started to occur around 2013 or 2014, and became more widespread from 2015 to 2017.

In the book, Lukianoff and Haidt argue that safe-space culture does not work because it relies on three great untruths: what does not kill you makes you weaker; always trust your feelings; and life is a battle between good and evil people. These untruths contradict modern psychological research and ancient philosophical wisdom, and serve to hurt people who embrace them.

Indeed, the authors found that embracing these untruths has led to increased depression, anxiety and suicides among students. In other words, what was supposed to help students has left them unprepared to deal with stressors and challenges, which leads to increased suffering.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Lukianoff and Haidt argue students need stressors and challenges in order to learn, adapt and grow. But universities consistently do the opposite, teaching students that they are candles that can easily be extinguished, instead of fires that thrive when faced with adversity.

Trigger warnings, in particular, often have the opposite effect of what they are intended to. A 2018 study out of Harvard University suggested that trigger warnings intensify the stigma associated with trauma, as they serve to enforce the idea that trauma is central to peoples identities.

The study went on to explain that trigger warnings are terrible for people who have never experienced trauma, as they can lead to people thinking that they are not resilient and may lead them to think that they are vulnerable to developing mental illnesses.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Using trigger warnings communicates to students that words can be harmful. After all, trigger warnings serve as threat-confirmations. This inclination to see threats where they do not exist is associated with an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the study.

The result is that many conservatives are now afraid to say what they really think. A recent study from the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology found that 58 per cent of right-wing professors in Canada claim their university is a hostile climate for their views.

It also found that 45 per cent of Canadian academics say they would discriminate against a colleague who supports former U.S. president Donald Trump, that 17 per cent would discriminate against a right-leaning grant bid and 11 per cent would be more critical of a right-leaning paper submission.

The study went on to claim that 34 per cent of somewhat right grad students and 62 per cent of very right grad students in North America and the United Kingdom believe sharing their views would make their lives difficult. As a result, right-wing grad students end up being less inclined to pursue academic careers, as conservatives are made to feel like they have to shut up or face consequences.

Given all of the evidence that safe-space culture does not work, I find it confusing why so many students and professors support it. I presented this evidence to various people throughout my academic career at Ryerson, but faculty and students consistently ignored the facts presented to them. I recall one instance where I recommended a journalism professor read The Coddling of the American Mind to understand why safe-space culture does not work, and he said he would never pick it up.

There are plenty of basic steps universities can take to stop this craziness: adopt a free speech policy based on the Chicago statement; stop using the word unsafe except when it pertains to matters of physical safety; and remove their radical diversity, inclusion and equity offices and instead encourage unity among faculty and students. These solutions might be unpopular, but they are the right moves.

Former British prime minister Winston Churchill said that, A state of society where men may not speak their minds cannot endure long. People should be free to speak their minds on university campuses without being punished. If freedom of expression remains a touchy subject on university campuses, the prospects of having a functioning democracy are minimal.
