Former Atheist leader in Kenya gives his life to Jesus – CHVN Radio
Posted: June 4, 2021 at 3:16 pm
A man who served as secretary for Atheists in Kenya (AIK)resigned after finding faith in Jesus Christ.
Seth Mahiga worked for AIK for less than two years when he resigned. Mahiga could no longer work for a place that he didn't believe the message they promoted.
"Seth's reason for resigning is that he has found Jesus Christ and is no longer interested in promoting atheism in Kenya. We wish Seth all the best in his newfound relationship with Jesus Christ," AIK President Harrison Mumia wrote on Twitter.
The AIK shareda video of Mahigaat a church sharing his testimony of newfound faith.
The video garnered much excitement from the Kenyan Christian community.
"I've been going through some difficulties in life and then I decided to resign as the secretary so I'm so happy to be here," Mahiga says in the online video.

I post this article once a month, and the options have changed. Thanks for your support! The latest project Im working on involves a weekly Substack newsletter that sums up atheism-related news.
Over the past decade, what began as a personal blog has turned into a hub with several contributors and multiple posts per day. I create YouTube videos, put out a podcast each week, and have released books! More recently, I created a podcast about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance.
In order to facilitate all of this, I have a Patreon page.
If youd like to help out, you can pledge a certain amount every month (with rewards along the way!) from as low as $3 a month.
As always, Im grateful for the kind words and support you all send my way. Its a pleasure being a source of information (and solace) for you, and I hope to continue it well into the future.
If Patreon isnt preferable for you, you can use a credit card through Venmo (My address: Mpromptu at gmail) or send mail to P.O. Box 9734 Naperville, IL 60567.
And for those who prefer to make a one-time donation only, since Patreon doesnt allow those right now, you can always give via PayPal:
Thank you!

Darrel Falk Downplays the Ramifications of the 2016 Royal Society Meeting – Discovery Institute
Posted: at 3:16 pm
Photo: Royal Society, entrance, by Tom Morris (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0], via Wikimedia Commons.
In previous articles, Casey Luskin and I have responded to Darrel Falks review ofReturn of the God Hypothesisfor BioLogos (see here and here). Now I will address how he greatlydownplayed the dire implicationsof the 2016Royal Society meetingfor the state of evolutionary biology.
As a quick recap: the Royal Society assembled many of the leading evolutionary theorists to discuss the limitations of the standard evolutionary model (SEM) commonly known as neo-Darwinism or the Modern Synthesis and to propose how an extended synthesis could be developed to address the explanatory deficits. Inthe opening talk, organizer Gerd Mller stated that the SEM could explain the modification or duplication of existing traits, but it could not explain such key challenges as the following (here, here):
This astonishing admission must be placed in its historical context for its implications to be fully appreciated. Since ancient times, philosophers and others have debated whether everything seen in the world was simply the product of natural processes or derived from the plans of a supreme intellect (here, here, here). The ancient form of the former belief is termed atomism, and it was motivated by the desire to discredit the commonly accepted view that the gods influenced the world. Mankind could then be fully liberated from the gods. The modern form is termed philosophical or scientific materialism.
This debate was reflected in the first-century writings of a prominent Christian leader, Paul, who authored a famous letter to the church in Rome.Early in the letter, Paul statesthat those who deny that the things that have been made reveal Gods invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature actively suppress the truth. As leading scholarCraig Keener explains, Paul was affirming the Greek philosophical schools (e.g., Stoics) who argued that the clear evidence of design in nature, particularly with the human intellect, point to a transcendent mind. At the same time, he was directly challenging the Epicurean philosophers who followed in the tradition of the atomists. One of their central beliefs was that evolution and a nascent form of natural selection justified ignoring the clear evidence for design in biology (here, here, here).
The atomist tradition receded into obscurity throughout the Middle Ages. It then reemerged during the Scientific Revolution with the success of physics and chemistry in explaining natural phenomena purely in terms of physical processes. It was further bolstered by the increasing popularity of skeptical and materialist philosophies.
The philosophy of materialism was embraced by Charles Darwin early in life. He hid this fact in his autobiography and instead portrayed himself as an honest seeker of truth. Yet his personal journals reveal that his intention from the beginning was to follow in the tradition of the atomists in purging teleology (aka design) from biology (here, here).
Toward this goal he imparted to natural selection God-like creative powers in order to replace the God of biblical tradition as the creator of life a view widely accepted at the time with a blind undirected process. This maneuver wasclearly describedby biologist Francisco Ayala:
It was Darwins greatest accomplishment to show that the complex organization and functionality of living beings can be explained as the result of a natural process natural selection without any need to resort to a Creator or other external agent.
It allowed skeptics, like the ancient atomists, to ignore the clear evidence of design in life. This point is well articulated by atheist Richard Dawkins in his bookThe Blind Watchmaker:
The complexity of living organisms is matched by the elegant efficiency of their apparent design. If anyone doesnt agree that this amount of complex design cries out for an explanation, I give up. (p. 4)
although atheism might have been logically tenable before Darwin, Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist. (p. 10)
But herein lies the problem. The Royal Society meeting exposed the reality, carefully hidden from the public, that leading evolutionary theorists recognize that natural selection has no real creative power. The current situation harkens back to the famous comment bygenetics pioneer Hugo de Vries:
Natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest, but it cannot explain the arrival of the fittest.
The obvious consequences of the public learning about the impotence of Darwins designer-substitute required the secular scientific establishment to engage in what public relations professionals term damage control. This process typically entails a carefully orchestrated reframing of the facts, commonly known as spin.
Darrel Falk, as one of their key ambassadors, dutifully repeated such carefully crafted statements as the following,
The point of that [Mllers] talk was not to suggest that the theory of evolution is in crisis, as I think he [Meyer] implies. On the contrary, the speaker was calling for an approach to evolutionary biology which is less gene-centric
No speaker at the meeting implied there was a hole in evolutionary theory that might require intelligent input. Quite the opposite actually there was a concern that the meetings intent might be misunderstood or misrepresented. The intent was methodological: heres how evolutionary biologists can develop a more thorough picture of how evolution works.
In all fairness, Falk and other public defenders of Darwin truly believe these statements since they interpret all discussions of evolution through the lens of scientific materialism. In other words, they assume on faith that evolution must be true, and so identify any deficiencies in the theory as representing mere unsolved problems. I also attended the conference, but I interpreted the content of the presentations within the broader scope of the history I just described. Within that context, the implications of what was said, and what was not said, reveal a much different story.
Natural selection is the only mechanism that even in principle could mimic the activity of an intelligent agent in creating anything of at least modest complexity and ingenuity. This conclusion is highlighted by the fact that speakers at the conference showcased every conceivable alternative mechanism that could potentially help fill the explanatory deficits of the SEM. But not one shred of evidence was presented that any of the extensions could perform any feat beyond such trivial tasks as increasing a plants height, changing the number of digits in an animals limb, or performing other slight modifications to preexisting traits.
The current state of evolution can be compared to the crisis astronomy would face if physicists discovered that gravity stopped operating beyond 10,000 miles past a celestial body. The loss of the only feasible mechanism that could explain the motion of planets, stars, and galaxies would result in absolute pandemonium and despair.
Most materialist biologists will not so easily come to terms with their true predicament since evolution operates not only as a scientific theory but as a sacrosanct creation narrative for secular society. Nevertheless, with natural selection off the table as a designer substitute, the only sensible interpretation that remains for the overwhelming evidence of design in biological systems is that life is the product of an actual designer (here, here).

Bitcoin falls after Elon Musk tweets breakup meme

Bitcoin's price fell Friday morning after Elon Musk posted a tweet suggesting he's fallen out of love with the world's top cryptocurrency.
The billionaire Tesla CEO tweeted a meme about a couple breaking up over the male partner quoting Linkin Park lyrics, adding the hashtag #Bitcoin and a broken heart emoji.
The cryptocurrency recovered slightly, but still remained in the red, after Square CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted on Friday morning that the digital payments company is considering creating a hardware wallet for bitcoin.
Bitcoin was 3.6% lower at $37,170.97 as of 1:45 p.m. ET on Friday, according to data from Coin Metrics. Other digital coins followed suit, with No. 2 cryptocurrency ether dipping 3.2% to $2,706.99 and dogecoin Musk's favored crypto sinking 3% to 38 cents.
Bitcoin has had a wild year, reaching a record high of more than $64,000 in April, only to then plummet to nearly $30,000 the following month. It's now more than 40% off its all-time high, though still up almost 30% so far in 2021.
It's not the first time Musk's tweets about crypto have moved the market. In May, he said that Tesla would stop accepting bitcoin as a payment method due to concerns over its energy usage, shaving hundreds of billions of dollars in value off the entire crypto market in a single day.
Some in the crypto industry have criticized Musk in the past for his posts about digital currencies. Musk has frequently tweeted about "joke" cryptocurrency dogecoin, for instance, often resulting in wild moves in its price.
Following his latest tweet about bitcoin, Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance, disapproved. Binance is the world's largest crypto exchange by trading volumes, according to CoinMarketCap data.
"Tweets that hurt other people's finances are not funny, and irresponsible," Zhao, who is known in crypto circles as "CZ," tweeted Friday.
Musk's Twitter posts have also affected assets beyond crypto. On Wednesday, shares of Samsung Publishing, a major shareholder in the producer of "Baby Shark," soared after a tweet from Musk about the viral children's song.
His tweets have attracted the ire of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which in 2018 accused Musk and his electric car firm of committing securities fraud after the CEO tweeted that he would take the company private and had "funding secured" for the deal.
This week, it emerged that the SEC reportedly reprimanded Musk for allegedly violating the terms of a settlement agreement with the securities regulator. SEC officials highlighted a tweet in May last year in which Musk said that Tesla's stock price was "too high."
In a new note this week, JPMorgan said institutional investors were not buying the dip in bitcoin, and suggested prices may have further to fall.
Bitcoin's proponents view the digital currency as a store of value similar to gold, arguing it can act as a hedge against inflation as central banks around the world ramp up stimulus in response to the coronavirus crisis. But skeptics say bitcoin is a speculative bubble waiting to burst.
Thousands of bitcoin investors have descended on Miami this week for a conference dedicated to the cryptocurrency. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is himself a believer in bitcoin, telling CNBC Thursday that the city is "actively looking at" paying employees in crypto.
"I think crypto is just fake money," Andrey Kostin, chairman of Russia's VTB Bank, told CNBC's Hadley Gamble at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday. "Somebody's sitting somewhere mining and mining like in the Middle Ages and then using them."
"No government will accept it because it's not under any government regulations," he added. "They can't control it."
Kostin alluded to several central bank initiatives to develop digital versions of existing money like the dollar, the euro, the Chinese yuan or, in Russia's case, the ruble.
"It's inevitable," he said. "The whole world is moving to a digital world. And currency is not excluded from this process."
CNBC's Hannah Miao contributed reporting.

Space junk slams into International Space Station, damaging a robotic arm – CBS News
Posted: at 3:13 pm
The International Space Station has been hit by fast-moving debris but it didn't cause too much damage. Space junk hurtling towards the station smashed into one of its robotic arms, leaving a hole.
NASA and the Canadian Space Agency first noticed the damage on Canadarm2 on May 12, according to a recent statement. The debris left a gaping hole in a section of the arm boom and thermal blanket.
According to NASA, over 23,000 objects the size of a softball or larger are being tracked by the U.S. Department of Defense at all times to monitor for possible collisions with satellites and the ISS. However, some smaller objects that cannot be tracked still pose a threat, like rocks, dust particles and flecks of paint that chip off of satellites.
"A number of space shuttle windows were replaced because of damage caused by material that was analyzed and shown to be paint flecks," NASA said. "In fact, millimeter-sized orbital debris represents the highest mission-ending risk to most robotic spacecraft operating in low Earth orbit."
Space junk, which includes both natural meteoroids and man-made objects, has become a growing area of concern as the region of space immediately surrounding Earth becomes more and more crowded with rocket parts, satellites and other objects. This debris, which travels at approximately 15,700 miles per hour in low-Earth orbit, poses a threat to both spacecraft and astronauts due to their fast speeds.
"Orbital debris is any human-made object in orbit about the Earth that no longer serves a useful function," NASA says. "Such debris includes nonfunctional spacecraft, abandoned launch vehicle stages, mission-related debris, and fragmentation debris."
Officials say the nearly 60-foot arm's capabilities were unaffected by the impact and small hole created by the unknown object. Operations are continuing as planned, while officials continue gathering data on the "lucky strike."
"The threat of collisions is taken very seriously," CSA said. "NASA has a long-standing set of guidelines to ensure the safety of Station crew. The safety of astronauts on board the orbiting laboratory remains the top priority of all Station partners."

Spacewalking cosmonauts will decommission an old space station module early Wednesday. Watch it live! – Space.com
Posted: at 3:13 pm
Two Russian cosmonauts will prepare a long-time docking module for eventual dismemberment from the International Space Station during a spacewalk on Wednesday (June 2) and you can watch it live.
Coverage will begin at 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT), and you can watch it live here on Space.com or on NASA Television and here at Space.com. Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov are expected to start their spacewalk at 1:20 a.m. EDT (0520 GMT). The extravehicular activity, or EVA, should last six and a half hours, although the timing is subject to change depending on how the procedures go.
Novitskiy will have red stripes on his Orlan spacesuit to designate him as lead spacewalker, while Dubrov will wear blue stripes. The cosmonauts both on their first spacewalk will exit the International Space Station (ISS) using the Russian Poisk module.
Video: Russians spacewalk to decommission Pirs in animated explainerRelated: The most memorable spacewalks in history
"The two cosmonauts will disconnect all external mechanical links between Pirs and the station, reposition spacewalk hardware and antennas, and relocate other gear previously used for spacecraft dockings to Pirs," NASA said in a statement. "The cosmonauts also will replace a fluid flow regulator on the nearby Zarya module and replace biological and material science samples on the exterior of the Russian modules," the agency added.
This spacewalk is the second in what will be a series of excursions to decommission Pirs, which has been in space since 2001; previously, cosmonauts performed work on Pirs in November 2020. NASA says this is the sixth spacewalk of 2021 and the 238th spacewalk overall in support of space station assembly, maintenance and upgrades. (Much of the 2021 spacewalk activity so far has been focused on upgrading the ISS solar arrays for at least a few more years of science in orbit.)
Pirs hosts an airlock for spacewalks along with a docking port for Soyuz crewed spacecraft and Progress uncrewed spacecraft. It can also transport fuel between the Russian Zvezda or Zarya modules or docked vehicles, NASA said in a description of the module. This summer, Pirs will be disposed of using an uncrewed Progress cargo ship that will push Pirs towards Earth, NASA added in a blog post
Pirs will be replaced a couple of days later with a new Russian Multi-Purpose Laboratory Module named "Nauka," which is Russian for "science." The long-delayed Nauka was originally supposed to launch in 2007, and after overcoming technical and funding obstacles it will finally launch July 15 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, according to Spaceflight Now's launch calendar.
"The spacecraft was designed to provide room and facilities for experiments focused on material science and biotechnology," Russian space journalist Anatoly Zak said in a description of Nauka's capabilities on RussianSpaceWeb.com, adding that the module is "designed to provide a number of critical service systems to the Russian segment of the International Space Station."
If all goes to plan, Nauka will extend the science work done on the Kristall module of the Mir space station that the Soviet Union and later, Russia managed in the 1980s and 1990s, Zak said. In November 2020, Roscosmos space chief Dmitry Rogozin said the new module will include a multi-docking hub for the Russian segment of the ISS.
Notably, Roscosmos has discussed forming an independent space station with its newer ISS modules after the end of the international project, which is slated for 2024 with a possible extension to 2028.

Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos have completed a spacewalk lasting seven hours and 19 minutes.
The two cosmonauts opened the hatch to the Poisk docking compartment airlock to begin the spacewalk at 1:53 a.m. EDT. They re-entered the airlock and closed the hatch at 9:12 a.m.

During the spacewalk, the duo disconnected the external mechanical links between Pirs and the space station, relocated spacewalk hardware including a telescoping crane, and reconfigured antennas to prepare the Pirs module for undocking and disposal. Additionally, the cosmonauts replaced a fluid flow regulator panel on the nearby Zarya module, jettisoned the old panel as planned, and replaced biological and material science samples on the exterior of the Russian modules.

Pirs will be replaced by the new Russian Multipurpose Laboratory Module, named Nauka, which is Russian for science. The undocking of Pirs is scheduled for this summer, about two days after Nauka launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
This was the first spacewalk for both cosmonauts and the 238th spacewalk overall in support of International Space Station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades. It also marks the sixth spacewalk of 2021.
