OFFICIAL LAUNCH: Bahamian crowdfunding platform and stock exchange to go live early next month – EyeWitness News
Posted: June 20, 2021 at 1:06 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS Bahamian crowdfunding platform and stock exchange ArawakX, which is licensed and regulated by the Securities Commission of the Bahamas, is set to go live early next month.
DArcy Rahming Jr, chief technology officer and spokesperson for ArawakX, noted: The primary purpose of ArawakX is to move Bahamians from consumers to owners. We have targeted early-stage international startups that are resident in The Bahamas and our rules are written for Bahamians to participate through share ownership.
ArawakX itself will be a publicly-traded company, so Bahamians of all financial levels will finally be able to own their own capital markets.
Initial listings on ArawakX will feature companies in the health, high tech, tourist attraction and agribusiness industries.
We are changing the reality that Bahamians can only get jobs from these companies but can actually own a portion of them. When the company grows, so will the potential wealth of the owner/investor, said Rahming.
He further noted that anyone will be able to participate even with amounts as low as $25.
This is made possible through financial technology (fintech) and regulations. Additionally, with just our initial launch, we will begin to see diversification in the economy and the potential creation of hundreds of jobs, said Rahming.
He added: Our regulations are very robust and provide strong protections for Bahamian owners.
Rahming further explained that the licensing procedure involved over four years of scrutiny, hundreds of pages of applications, hundreds of thousands of dollars of fees and solvency requirements and proof that the ArawakX company is viable and can operate the exchange.
We have welcomed the challenge because it has made us a world-class organization from the onset. We are literally completing requirements in 80 days that it has taken other world-class exchanges 500 days, said Rahming.
We are able to do this because of our dynamic team of national veterans, international advisors and a cadre of highly educated young Bahamian millennials, some of whom decided to come back after being educated abroad to give back while building the country.
ArawakX is under the leadership of Chairman and CEO DArcy Rahming Sr, who was an early pioneer and manager in the $100 million GLOBEX exchange a joint venture between the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade and the French MATIF.
To round out their executive management team, ArawakX has appointed: Winston Rolle, businessman and former CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, as chief of equities; Leroy Archer, former CEO of Heineken Bahamas, as chief of investor relations; and Kenneth Donathon, former CEO of RND, as chief community officer.
Rahming said:These successful and proven Bahamian executives should give confidence to the Bahamian and international community. Additionally, our rules are being designed and vetted by some of the worlds foremost authorities on exchanges. We have literally looked at dozens of exchange rules and adopted the best ones to suit Bahamians so that they can grow their wealth.

Ministry of Health gets an estimated $300M in budget for healthcare – EyeWitness News
Posted: at 1:06 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS The Ministry of Health has been allocated the sum of $297,081,014 in the 2021/2022 budget in order to carry out its planned phased upgrade to healthcare facilities around the country.
This was revealed by the Minister of Health Renward Wells during his contribution to the budget debate in the House of Assembly on Thursday, June 17, 2021.
Wells noted that over the past two years, The Bahamas faced Hurricane Dorian and the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the road to recovery is not an easy one.
He said, however, that the country will recover based on the seven-pillared Accelerated Bahamas Recovery Plan that was recently tabled in the House of Assembly by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr Hubert Minnis.
My ministry looks forward to participating in the rollout of that plan, Wells said, adding that healthcare improvements and vaccinations form the third pillar.
The $297,081,014 for the 2021/2022 fiscal year to support the Ministry of Health includes:
These appropriations will facilitate four areas of the healthcare sector:
We are a government committed with our whole heart to the enhancement our healthcare system. The focus is on saving lives, improving health outcomes and putting much more care into the word healthcare, Wells said.
He added: We realize that in order to further achieve our desired outcomes, we will have to greatly improve our health infrastructure throughout the nation. We have taken the decision to renovate some structures and to build new ones. Consequently, renovations will be made to the priority wards and patient care environments to address bed shortages while ensuring compliance with COVID-19 space requirements and infection control practices.
According to Wells, the intended goal of these improvements aligns with the core value that all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship.
The minister also shared the infrastructure plan, which incorporates the latest use of smart and green technology to provide for safe delivery of routine medical services, e-health services and telemedicine, and the safe management of all infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
Supported by funding acquired from the World Bank Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the government will transform the face of the healthcare sector to modernize its facilities to reflect universal healthcare in the Public Hospitals Authority, the Department of Public Health, the National Health Insurance Authority and the Ministry of Health, said Wells.
Infrastructural development in healthcare will also take place at nine primary care clinics in seven islands, he said.

POLICE ARE YOUR FRIENDS: RBPF partner with Ministry and Health and church for a day of give-backs – EyeWitness News
Posted: at 1:06 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS The Royal Bahamas Police Force yesterday partnered with the Ministry of Health, the Golden Gates Assembly Church, and Voice of Deliverance Cathedral to host a give-back at the Golden Gates Park.
The initiative included a vaccination drive in the foyer of the church, health screening for men on the park in honor of Fathers Day, and drive-thru distribution of care packages and food vouchers.
Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle said some 300 care packages were given out, along with 150 food vouchers for people in need.
He noted that the RBPFs Sick Bay was on standby doing free health checks for men, including checking blood pressure, glucose, and more, highlighting that men rarely go to the doctor when compared to women.
Rolle also urged Bahamians to take any opportunity they can to get vaccinated.
We are still in this COVID and this is one of the ways in which we can give back, he said.
The police commissioner underscored the importance of the police force to foster better relationships with the community, noting that this is just one of the ways police are giving back.
Ive been saying for a while now that the police are your friends, he said.
The police is in fact the community and the community is the police.
Police officers, only being members of the community, are paid to give full time and attention to work that is the responsibility of everybody in the community in the interest of the community.
Since receiving the appointment of COP in March 2020, Rolle has embarked on several initiatives aimed at increasing police presence and public trust throughout communities in the country.

Flamingos Women’s Golf Club to host their first tournament on Saturday – Bahamas Tribune
Posted: at 1:06 am
By BRENT STUBBS
Senior Sports Reporter
TWO years ago after national and African American Golfers Hall of Famer Agatha M Delancy formed the non-profit Flamingos Womens Golf Club, they will host their first tournament on Saturday at the Bahamas Golf Federations Nine-Hole Golf Club.
The event is all set to tee off at 9:30am and will have a cross section of rising young junior players to the veteran players. A total of 18 players, placed in seven different threesome teams, are expected to participate.
Alena Hutchenson, former national junior, senior and collegiate player, will be the lead instructor. She is the only LPGA Class A teaching professional in the country, but she finds herself in good company as there are fewer than 30 African American and or Black LPGA teaching professionals in the sport.
Im honoured to be the only LPGA Class A teaching professional in the country as it shows my commitment to continuing to grow as an instructor, Hutchenson said.
In 2010, after I completed my Bachelors Degree in Business Management (from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC (outside of Charlotte), I knew that once I moved back home. I wanted to be involved in changing the direction of golf, especially junior golf so to do that I needed to be trained.
As she trained through the Ladies Professional Golf Association for about ten years, Hutchenson said it opened the door for Georgette Rolle and Raquel Riley to join and become LPGA Teaching Professionals with Class B Certifications.
The Bahamas Golf Federation played a crucial role in my development as a golfer as well as giving other golfers like me the opportunity for exposure and the ability to travel to international tournaments, she said. I truly wish that others who were a part of this federation can give back to its continued development if its not through serving as a board member this can also be done by the giving of support through donations.
Hutchenson's involvement in golf dates back to the late 1990s and continued as she previously held the post of junior golf director for over six years in a philanthropic position where she served as a national team coach and manager for the BGFs national teams.
Delancy, a former president of the BGF, noted that the club, which seeks to build a community that empowers women and young girls in partnership with the BGF Ladies Division and current Ladies Chairperson Dr. Patti Symonette.
The club includes women from various professional backgrounds and who serve or have served the country in numerous capacities. It also includes our junior membership for young girls between the ages of 14 -18, but their clinics, intensive beginner and intermediate monthly courses, lessons and league play extend to women 70-plus years.
Delancy, who is also a Senior Womens National team manager and member as well as founding chair of the BGFs Ladies Division,, said Hutchenson has done a phenomenal job since she returned home in assisting her with getting the club off the ground.
We had some things like the Hurricane and Covid-19, which we had no control over, but they knocked us off stride, Delancy said. But once Alena came on and started working with us, she has done a phenomenal job.
We are seeing growth, almost on a daily basis. We can tell you that another lady is coming along. Give it a year and we can have a membership to anywhere, almost a 100 golfers. Thats how much we are growing.
The lessons, conducted by Hutchenson, are very well structured, according to Delancy, and they are affordable.
She puts her emphasis on quality and not quantity, Delancy said. Her class sizes are normally no more than four per session and they are for one hour each time.
Hutchenson added that the tournament will serve as a learning experience and will also unite all of the ladies currently involved in their golf sessions, many of whom have not met before.
Teams will comprise one intermediate golfer and two novices.
This will help bridge the gap between seasoned players and newcomers to the game, Hutchenson said. Also it will be a great opportunity to gauge how well golfers are improving and the necessary steps needed thereafter to further add consistency to their games.
All of the teams are evenly divided so it truly is based on the conditions of the course as well as how well each team plays together that will determine the tournaments champions.
The tee times for Saturdays event are as follows::
9:30 am - Agatha Mona Delancy, Vanria Munnings and A. Pamela Thompson.
9:45 am - Dr. Patti Symonette, Templa Kemp-Lightbourne and Rachel Quant.
10:00 am - Helen Saunders, Immalasha Johnson-Thompson and Tamica Rahming.
10:15 am - Christine Malard, Roberta Quant and Anja Charles.
10:30 am - Gwendolyn Knowles, Sharon Cleare and Antoinette Russell.
10:45 am - Surinder Deal, Antonia Richards and Cherise Archer.
11:00 am - Patryce Curry. Shervonne Johnson and Kyra Isaacs.

HERO PAY: $640000 to be paid to 143 frontline healthcare workers – EyeWitness News
Posted: at 1:06 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS Minister of Health Renward Wells said yesterday that 143 healthcare workers who stepped forward at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic during the first wave will be paid collectively $640,600, noting those men and women said hear am I, send me when others were somewhat tepid and hesitant.
The government has allocated an additional $3 million in the budget as an honorarium for 1,690 healthcare workers who later joined the fight against the virus that has claimed more than 240 lives.
Wells said the government also paid overtime to nurses who worked during the pandemic.
A total of $162,313 was paid to nurses last October for the period January 2020 through August 2020.
Last September, Wells mandated that overtime was not to accrue and overtime was to be paid on a month-to-month basis.
But he said the Ministry of Health remains on a paper-based honor system and even after some overtime funds were paid, log sheets were still being submitted for Hurricane Dorian.
Although the government was ready to pay the overtime accrued by employees the government still had to wait for the log sheets to be administratively compiled with accurate cost, the minister said.
Mr Speaker, I want it to be noted by all and sundry that the Public Hospitals Authority does not have this problem of paying overtime to healthcare workers since the Public Hospitals Authority has Accustaff sign-in electronic program system.
Consequently, nurses employed at PMH were paid their overtime monthly and on time.
I want it to be known that the time to wait on log sheets has come and gone.
Wells announced the ministry will invest in a biometric sign-in program for the Department of Public Health that will make overtime payments seamless.
Pointing to the nursing shortage, Wells said the University of The Bahamas recently graduated 40 nursing students.
He said those nurses will sit their examinations in November.
Another 30 nursing students will graduate by the end of the summer.
A further 100 nursing students will be following after the group of 30.
So, Mr Speaker, by the end of this upcoming fiscal year there will be an additional 170 nurses in our healthcare system, the minister said.
He said The Bahamas tertiary education system is creating the dull-suite of allied healthcare professionals needed to fully staff the healthcare system with qualified professionals and experts.
We must look to our young people to help get our country get through these difficult times and to help this nations recovery, Wells said.
This Free National Movement government is doing just that with this program.

Adventure of the Seas Live Blog – Day 6 – Sea Day – Royal Caribbean Blog
Posted: at 1:06 am
One of the best things about going on a cruise ship is all the fun packed onboard, and a sea day is a great time to try it out.
Before we hit up the fun, the matter of testing was needed.
Royal Caribbean transformed deck 5 of the main dining room into a rapid test center, and guests had the choice of getting an antigen test today or tomorrow.
This test serves two purposes: satisfying Bahamian law and providing a test result to get back into the United States.
This was an antigen test, so it was quick and easy. Most people made reservations once onboard the ship for a time slot, although they seemed to have more availability and took walk-ins.
Since we are doing a back-to-back cruise, my kids had to get an antigen test, but my wife and I did not since we are both fully vaccinated.
Test results are emailed back to you, as well as delivered to your stateroom.
The weather today was not great, with lots of clouds and even some rain. The forecastwas for things to clear up as we got closer to The Bahamas.
Something else new on Royal Caribbean is a new fleetwide drink menu.
Every few years, Royal Caribbean updates its drink menu for locations that do not have a specialized drink menu. One noticable difference with this year's edition is there is a focus on drinks sourced from Caribbean islands, as well as more attention to low alcohol and no alcohol drinks.
Royal Caribbean set up a sampling event where some of the new drinks could be sampled.
Don't worry, the menu is just a starting point, so you can still order all of your favorite cocktails.
With the weather iffy at best, we enjoyed some time relaxing onboard.
A few fellow RoyalCaribbeanBlog readers even took over a Blackjack table in the casino for some fun.
The casino is limiting tables to 4 people to enforce social distancing.
Dinner this evening took us to Izumi, which is the only location in the fleet on the Royal Promenade.
I love sushi, especially from Izumi, and they also have a menu of non-sushi items to enjoy as well.
After dinner, we went to Studio B to check out the ice skating show.
Many guests onboard were equally interested to see one of the ice show's cast, Jordan, who had been doing vlogs on her YouTube channel about being a crew member on Adventure of the Seas.
After the show, there was a comedian in the theater, who did a great job of working the crowd into his act.
In both Studio B and the theater, many seats and even entire rows are unavailable to sit in for social distancing purposes.
Tomorrow is our last day of the sailing, and we will be in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

Juneteenth spurs revival of abolition amendment by lawmakers – NEWS10 ABC
Posted: at 1:05 am
As thenation this week madeJuneteenth a federal holiday, honoring when the last enslaved Black people learned they were free, lawmakers are reviving calls to end a loophole in the Constitution that allowed another form of slavery forced labor for convicted felons to thrive.
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams told The Associated Press they will reintroduce legislation to revise the 13th Amendment, which bans enslavement or involuntary servitude except as a form of criminal punishment. That exception, which has been recognized since 1865, has led to the common practice of forced labor by felons.
Social justice advocates say it created generations of Black families touched by mass incarceration and poverty and that the ramifications are still being felt today.Juneteenthseemed like the appropriate time to address this huge piece of systemic racism in the middle of our Constitution, Merkley said.
At the moment that we are celebrating, if you will, the 13th Amendment and the end of slavery and its eventual announcement we should at the same time recognize that the 13th Amendment was flawed, Merkley said. It enabled states to arrest people for any reason, convict them and put them back into slavery.
The amendments loophole for criminal punishment encouraged former Confederate states, after the Civil War, to devise ways to maintain the dynamics of slavery. They used restrictive measures known as the black codes, laws targeting Black people for benign interactions from talking too loudly to not yielding on the sidewalk. Those targeted would end up in custody for these minor actions, and would effectively be enslaved again.
The so-called abolition amendment was introduced as a joint resolution in December. Mostly supported by Democrats in both the House and Senate, it failed to gain traction before the sessions end. The hope this time around, Merkley said, is to ignite a national movement.
The issue is important to Williams, a Black woman who grew up in the South. She hopes this legislation wont be viewed through the prism of money and what the loss of prison labor would mean. Instead, she says, the history of the prison system and its relationship to people of color must be viewed in a people-centered way.
Our people have already been in chains and enslaved because of money, Williams said. We have to make sure that we are truly moving forward and not using money as a crutch of why were continuing to perpetuate sins of our nations founding and our nations history.
One group that has long been part of the movement is Worth Rises, a criminal justice advocacy group helping with the legislations rollout. The amendments clause has significant repercussions today, says Bianca Tylek, Worth Rises executive director. Incarcerated workers make at most pennies on the dollar for their contributions, she says, and they lack recourse if they get hurt working or have to work when sick.
Were talking about people who can be beaten for not working. People can be denied calls and visits, contact with their family, Tylek said. People can be put into solitary confinement. People can take hits on their long-term record.
Jorge Renaud, national criminal justice director for LatinoJustice and a parolee, said those punishments happened to him when he couldnt get through some jobs. He spent much of his 27 years in Texas state prisons doing hard labor like picking cotton, chopping down trees and grading roads. Texas does not pay jailed workers.
For Renaud, 64, what was worse than no pay was not having much sense of self-worth.
Its not just the choice to work. Its the choice to do anything, he said. We live in a country that prides itself on individuality. Its impressed upon you over and over again that you are worthless and you belong to the state.
Advocates of the bill note that it targets forced labor and not prison work programs, which are voluntary.
What were saying, Tylek said, is the value of that work must be demonstrated and people must not be forced to work against their will.
In Renauds experience, prison labor was also something often done without racial equity. White incarcerated workers often were assigned less labor-intensive tasks like running the prison library or refurbishing computers. But their Black and Latino counterparts got kitchen and laundry duty. He noticed a similar trend when he gave some legislators a tour of a prison unit three years ago.
The jobs that might prepare you for something out in the free world or are technology based are still reserved for whites, Renaud said.
More than 20 states still include similar clauses involving human bondage or prison labor in their own governing documents, which date to the 19th century abolition of slavery. Nebraska and Utah, which are represented by GOP senators, were two of the first to amend their constitutions for the very same issue last year through voter-approved initiatives. Only Colorado came earlier, removing such language through a ballot measure in 2018.
Merkley is optimistic that his Republican colleagues will ultimately support the legislation.
Nothing about this should be partisan, Merkley said. I think every American should be about ending slavery in our Constitution.
Williams, too, does not want this to be painted as a partisan issue.
I am willing to work with you as long as you are willing to work around making sure that everyone in this country regardless of their background, their ZIP code, or their bank account has access to the full promise of America, she said. That includes making sure we rid involuntary servitude in this country in our Constitution.
The 13th Amendment grew from President Abraham Lincolns determination that the Emancipation Proclamation did not do enough to abolish slavery, according to historians. While the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the South in 1863, it wasnt enforced in many places until after the end of the Civil War two years later. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didnt reach the last enslaved black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas. That day was dubbed Juneteenth.
Meanwhile, Lincoln proposed a constitutional amendment to dismantle the institution of slavery once and for all. The Senate passed the 13th Amendment in 1864, and the House followed in early 1865, barely two months before Lincolns assassination. The amendment was then ratified by the the states.
Constitutional amendments require approval by two-thirds of the House and Senate, as well as ratification by three-quarters of state legislatures. They are also rare.
Tylek, of Worth Rises, hopes other lawmakers will see that an exception to slavery bans is unacceptable.
Its a huge stain on our culture, on our Constitution, on our nation to say No slavery except, Tylek said. We have to be able to say no slavery no exceptions.

Its brutal: Las Vegas cooks amid blazing heatwave and its going to get worse – The Guardian
Posted: at 1:05 am
By midnight on Wednesday, two days into a scorching heat wave to hit the US west, the air in Las Vegas had barely cooled.
Throughout the day and for the days that followed, temperatures in the desert city hovered close to historic highs, peaking at 116 degrees Fahrenheit (46.6 Celsius), and setting a new record for such dangerously hot weather so early in the year. Meanwhile, dust and smoke from nearby wildfires hung in the stiff hot air, casting a brown haze over the valley.
Throngs of tourists still ambled along scorching-hot sidewalks on the Vegas Strip, and many others lined the labyrinths of slot machines, restaurants and shops inside air conditioned casinos. But not everyone is able to escape indoors.
I am dying I feel like Im going to pass out, said Violet, a woman clad in a denim thong and crop top.
Violet makes her living outside on the strip, posing for pictures with passersby. She was glistening, both from the body glitter covering her arms and chest and the beads of sweat collecting on her face in the midday sun. She has a heart condition, she said while leaning against a planter where she and several other women had stored water bottles to empty in-between selfies. I am out here because I have to pay rent, but it is so hot and I get dehydrated so quickly.
Researchers predict this weeks heatwave to be the first of several to hit the US south-west before the summer ends. Driven by the climate crisis and intensified by the citys expansive growth, Vegas is already cooking and it is going to get worse.
Las Vegass population is booming and the city is sprawling into the surrounding desert. The extra concrete adds to the sizzle. On hot days, the highways and roads are littered with broken-down automobiles commuter cars, ambulances, delivery trucks and buses that overheat as they made their way to and from the city-center.
Nevadas climate is changing, the Nevada governments Climate Initiative website reports. In fact, Nevadans say, they are already noticing and impacted by these changes. Climate change has come home.
The changes are particularly pronounced in Sin City and its surrounding areas, which is warming faster than almost anywhere else in the US. Heatwaves are not only getting hotter, they are also becoming more frequent. Summer weather is increasingly encroaching on spring, with less and less room for relief.
The increasing intensity hasnt gone unnoticed among workers who have to brave the dangerous conditions, but no one in the valley is allowed to talk, Jeff, a valet and porter said. He declined to give his last name out of fear of retribution from his employer, a hotel off the strip.
The ins and outs are what get you, he added, explaining that his duties require him to constantly shift between extreme heat and frigid air conditioning.
You get into those cars that have been sitting outside and its like 140F. Then the sweat just pours, he said. I have seen guys pass out and start shaking. Its brutal.
But his job offers him health and life insurance so he plans to stick it out.
Rafael Martinez, who works as a security guard, said he stands outside throughout his eight-hour shift. Hes witnessed several people lose consciousness right there on the street. People pass out all the time, he said. I am sweating and I feel the heat, but I am not one to complain. He drinks water often, which he said helps a little. He always makes sure to stand in the shade. If you stand in the sun you are going to dry out.
Heat is one of the most deadly weather disasters, according to data from the federal government, and in southern Nevada, coroner data shows that heat-related deaths are on the rise. Officials have emphasized the importance of not leaving people or animals in cars, and have begun enforcing a new animal cruelty ordinance that cracks down on owners who leave pets outside for more than 10 hours a day during a heat advisory, which typically applies when temperatures reach 105F.
But for workers who have be outside, low-income residents without access to in-home cooling, and the more than 6,000 unhoused residents in Las Vegas, the stifling conditions can exact a considerable toll.
There will certainly be an impact on people who cant get cool said Kristina Dahl a senior climate scientist for the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit advocacy organization. Though heat stress and heat stroke alone can be fatal, researchers also found that those exposed to high temperatures have higher rates of chronic kidney disease. Hot weather also adds to air quality issues, trapping harmful pollutants while spikes in energy use from air conditioning increase emissions. Studies show that heat affects the brain, slowing cognitive function.
Clark county, where Las Vegas is located, provides cooling centers when the heat spikes but many of them close at night even when overnight temperatures dont drop. That issue is attributed to the cityscape itself.
We are seeing urban areas experiencing a more pronounced and more defined rise in the frequency of extreme heat, Dahl said. That is due to a combination of the overall warming we are all experiencing but in urban areas, but it gets amplified by the use of manmade materials, she added. And, its not only baking locals. As cities become more developed, and theres less natural land cover, thats going to amplify the signal of warming we see around the globe she said.
Far from the glitz and glamour of the Strip, new homes seem to march, row-by-row into the desert. Even with the increasingly intense conditions, the population is growing. Numbers of residents increased by more than 64% between 2000 and 2018 in the county. Officials expect that numbers will continue to grow, projecting that in the next 40 years close to 3.2 million people will call the area homean increase of nearly 40%.
Expecting to run out of space, a new county lands bill has petitioned the federal government for more acreage, pulling roughly 30,000 acres from public lands in the surrounding desert.
Meanwhile, the construction continues. Housing developments in various stages of completion are on full display at the fringes of the city, and even on the hottest days, workers brave the elements to complete them.
Its hard and its hot but if we dont work we dont get money, said Ignacio Regrelar, who is finishing dry-wall on a development during the 116 degree day. He and his team work for 8 hours through the extreme heat. The problem is, if the boss says he is ready, and you dont do it, he will take other people, he said. Workers need work. But its hard.
The residential expansion has also enveloped areas that were once rural. Las Vegas Livestock, family-owned operation that has spent six-generations raising pigs in the region, was pushed out of the city in 2018.
The farm utilizes food waste from Las Vegas casinos to feed thousands of pigs and now they are based deeper in the desert, sharing the land offered by the local landfill. Our family has been in Vegas for 50 years but the city grew up around them so now we are out here, said farm manager Sarah Staloard. Hopefully houses wont come this far but you never know.
The pigs can handle the heat if they are regularly doused in water, but I think the question is are we going to have people out here safely if it gets hotter, she said. Shes worried about the rising temperatures and the Valley she calls home, especially after spending the day working through triple-digits. Theres no energy out there on the farm.
If it continues to be super hot at night that would be a concern, she said. We would have to have someone out here to make sure the pigs are not getting too hot. Thered be no relief for anyone, she added. Even the equipment never gets a break.

Resorts World is a rare finished project on north Strip – Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted: at 1:05 am
Las Vegas may be known for its boulevard of massive casinos, but it also boasts a long history of developers drawing up grandiose plans and never following through.
And in the past several years, one spot in particular has seen a parade of big plans come and go or just stall: the north Strip.
Coming out of the Great Recession, various plans to build huge hotels, complete an unfinished skyscraper, and construct an arena have produced hardly any visible results. But in a break from the north Strips seemingly cursed past, a newly built hotel-casino is about to open.
Resorts World Las Vegas, a $4.3 billion project by Malaysias Genting Group, is set to debut next Thursday. It will feature 3,500 rooms, more than 40 food and beverage spots, and plenty of star power, with a lineup of scheduled shows from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Celine Dion.
Resorts World was initially supposed to debut five years ago, and its unclear how, or if, its long-planned entry will influence neighboring developers. But its opening could spark a boost of foot traffic to a stretch of the Strip that has long needed it and more tourism overall to Las Vegas, something new resorts have done in the past.
Genting bought the abandoned Echelon resort site in March 2013 with plans for its own lavish project. The economy was in rough shape, though it wasnt long before other big proposals or deals came about, sparking hopes for a turnaround in the area.
Ex-NBA player Jackie Robinson announced plans in late 2013 to build an arena and a luxury hotel on the former Wet n Wild water park site. In 2014, Australian billionaire James Packer acquired the vacant former New Frontier site, and in 2017, developer Steve Witkoff acquired the long-stalled Fontainebleau tower.
Robinson started excavating his site in 2017 and received approvals that year for a major expansion of his plans. But the $3 billion venture hasnt shown progress beyond the initial construction work, leaving a giant hole in the ground.
In April, after a Clark County Commission vote kept his long-stalled plans alive, he said he was looking to resume excavating the site in late summer.
Packers group set out to build the 1,100-room Alon Las Vegas, but he reportedly had trouble raising project funds, and the land went up for sale. Wynn Resorts reached a deal in late 2017 to buy the site.
Wynn founder Steve Wynn told analysts in early 2018 that he wanted to move quickly on a project there, with talk of building 2,000 to 3,000 rooms.
Days later, The Wall Street Journal reported that Wynn had a decadeslong pattern of sexual misconduct. Wynn, who called the allegations preposterous, soon resigned as chairman and CEO of his casino company, citing an avalanche of negative publicity.
Its land remains empty.
Wynn Resorts spokesman Michael Weaver said Friday that projects such as Resorts World benefit all current and future resorts on the north Strip and that his company has not announced a development timeline for its land.
Meanwhile, Witkoff renamed his property Drew Las Vegas and set out to finish the 60-plus-story megaresort. But he shelved construction after the coronavirus pandemic hit, and the Fontainebleaus original developer, Jeffrey Soffer, reacquired the property early this year through a process that lets people avoid foreclosure, with no word on when construction would resume.
In a statement last week that did not provide any updates on the towers timeline, Brett Mufson, president of Soffers firm, Fontainebleau Development, said that Resorts Worlds opening, and the Las Vegas Convention Centers recently finished $1 billion expansion just off the north Strip, help further solidify the location of our property as the future epicenter of Las Vegas.
To be sure, other projects have opened in the area. After a major renovation, the former Sahara reopened in 2014 as the SLS Las Vegas. But its performance quickly spiraled downward, and the resort traded hands in 2018. The new owner launched a $150 million overhaul and renamed the property Sahara Las Vegas.
Also, the Las Vegas Convention Center this month hosted the first major trade show in the U.S. since the pandemic hit, World of Concrete, in its new West Hall.
The north Strip still faces plenty of questions, but Resorts Worlds debut is a long-awaited win for the area. But how will it perform, and what will it do for that part of the boulevard?
Sit tight.
