A high-net-worth family is looking to hire a travelling domestic couple to look after their residences on a private island in the Bahamas.

The job posted by Polo & Tweed on April 28, along with a short video, states that the selected couple will have to manage family homes of the wealthy family, based between Naples, Florida and Bahamas, during weekdays-8am to 5pm Monday to Friday-with private accommodation provided.

As per the job details, the experienced domestic couple would have to manage their large country estate in Florida that includes three houses, with nine bathrooms and the Bahamas estate consists of four houses with four bedrooms in each home.

According to the listing, the couple will be paid $100,000-$120,000 (over Rs 1 crore) per year depending on experience along with healthcare, dental benefits and a car for work duties.

There is not much information about the high end worth family except its a family of four, with two grown children who have been spending 80% of their time in Bahamas due to Covid-19. The family is described as friendly, relaxed, easy-goin looking for a discreet, well mannered, professional couple to manage guests, perform front of house duties and manage the household from day-today perspective.

The duties include all aspects of house-keeping and management like daily, deep cleaning of the household, making beds, cleaning bathroom and other areas, laundry, ironing along with running errands and hosting guests.

Lucy Challenger, founder of Polo & Tweed, told Metro it is a once-in-a-lifetime position and that the client was tempted to apply for the job himself. She claims they have been flooded with replies since it was posted on their website and currently, they are shortlisting candidates and urged other interested couples to send their CVs immediately.

The listing reads that the family is interviewing the right couple to start as soon as possible.

Other perks included with the job are a private jet to travel between the homes, accommodations at both properties and of course, the scenic view.

Airlines must pay to fly in Bahamas airspaceGovt projects $300-350 million intake over next 10 years

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The Bahamas, for the first time in its history, is assuming management of its sovereign airspace in a move that could yield $300 to $350 million over the next 10 years, according to Tourism and Aviation Minister Dionisio DAguilar.

The Bahamas has now signed a 10-year air navigation services agreement with the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), which could be extended for an additional 36 months.

Under the new agreement, as of May 1, 2021, aircraft landing in and departing out of the sovereign airspace of The Bahamas, aircraft flying solely in the airspace of The Bahamas and aircraft flying over the sovereign airspace of The Bahamas will start paying fees to the newly established Bahamas Air Navigation Services Authority, (BANSA) an entity solely owned and operated by the Bahamian government.

DAguilar, speaking at the ceremonial signing of the agreement yesterday, noted that it concluded decades of talks over the management of the sovereign airspace.

The Bahamas will assume, for the first time, the management of this sovereign airspace, said DAguilar.

Commencing May 1, 2021, aircraft landing in and out of sovereign airspace of The Bahamas, those flying solely within the sovereign airspace of The Bahamas and those flying over the sovereign airspace, will pay fees to the entity (BANSA).

He noted that according to the UNS convention on civil aviation, the imposition of fees must be non-discriminatory.

All carriers must pay the same fees. We could not charge one fee for Bahamian carriers and another for non-Bahamian carriers, DAguilar explained.

He further explained that fees for aircraft landing and taking off in Bahamian airspace will range from $1 per arriving and departing passenger and a flat fee of $10 up to $61 dollars, depending on the takeoff weight.

The aircraft that weighs less would pay less; the aircraft that weighs more would pay more, said DAguilar.

He noted that all fees collected cannot be deposited to consolidated funds but must be directed to the development of the countrys aviation sector, adding thathe expects the agreement to yield $300 to 350 million over the next ten years.

The Bahamas will still be responsible for an $80,000 annual fee to be paid to the FAA for the provision of data to charge airspace users.

United States Charge dAffaires Usha Pitts said the agreement represents years of hard work between the two countries.

This cements cooperation for the next ten years and begins the process by which The Bahamas can take greater ownership of its own airspace, Pitts noted.

A job advert posted with upscale recruitment firm Polo & Tweed, based in Mayfair, London, promises a salary of up to 90,000 for an experienced domestic couple.

The ultra-high-net-worth family of four are based between lavish properties in Naples, Florida and the Bahamas although since the start of the pandemic, the advert states that most of their time is spent on the holiday island.

Full healthcare, a car and private accommodation at the properties will be provided to the successful couple, the job ad states.

Applicants should have a positive can-do attitude and be self-confident, discreet, professional with excellent manners and well as very well presented.

Duties would include things such as housekeeping, daily cleaning of the property and laundry; as well as daily errands and odd jobs such as picking up guests from the airport.

You should be discreet and well mannered, and the family are friendly and relaxed, but still like their home to be presented to the highest degree. You should be able to manage guests, perform front of house duties, and be able to manage the household from a day-to-day perspective, the advert states.

The working hours are five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm.

FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA Stakeholders from the government of The Bahamas and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are focusing their efforts on creating the right mix of policy and investment designed to reinvigorate post-Hurricane Dorian recovery efforts, particularly in the northern Bahamas. With another active hurricane season less than a month away now, those plans took center stage as part of a special panel hosted by organizers of the annual Grand Bahama Business Outlook Seminar.

IDB Chief of Operations Maria Eugenia Roca explained: Dorian exposed some critical shortfalls in various systems. It is critical to rethink the future of The Bahamas to address structural challenges.

She further acknowledged the exacerbated impact of the global pandemic on an already challenging environment.

Issues surrounding energy security, transformation and resilience have topped that recovery agenda as stakeholders, which included teams from the Ministry of Finance, worked to take decisive and innovative steps toward responding in an agile way to the more than $200 million in energy-related damages caused by Dorian.

The Ministry of Finances Reconstruction With Resilience in the Energy Sector of The Bahamas Program has overhauled and replaced hundreds of miles of damaged and aging infrastructure on Grand Bahama and Abaco.

This work represented phase one of the multimillion-dollar initiative designed to address major structural barriers to energy transformation in the short-term, all while pressing ahead with plans to expand and diversify sustainable energy options within the sector and train countless industry stakeholders as part of a medium and longer-term goal. Barriers such as financial and infrastructural gaps, as well as the absence of adequate renewable energy regulations and an overall lack of resiliency, have long been a hinderance to the forward movement of the sector.

IDB Clean Energy Senior Specialist Juan Paredes noted: Resiliency is very important in cases of a disastrous event. This does not only include natural events but takes into consideration scenarios like potential cyberattacks on the grid as well.

The programs introduction of storm-resilient infrastructure and new microgrid systems to both Abaco and Grand Bahama will shore up energy security on both islands and are also expected to have a far-reaching socioeconomic impact on the country at large.

A total of $80 million has been allocated for this phase, focusing on more stable and efficient transmission and generation.

IDB Senior Regional Energy Specialist Dr Malaika Masson said: Through a funding facility provided by the IDB, The Bahamas will have access to some $170 million earmarked for energy transformation over the next eight to 10 years.

Touting the macroeconomic support that will also be provided through this program, she noted: As we move forward, we will also include New Providence and the return on that investment could net millions over the next 10 years.

Those plans, according to Program Coordinator Stanford Moss, have been bolstered by the necessary scientific and feasibility studies that have helped chart the course toward creating a more climate-resilient system.

As sweeping changes begin to take place across the industry, stakeholders anticipate that investment in the renewable and sustainable energy sector will become more widespread, attracting both local and international interest. This is the time when innovative financing instruments are required such as the Renewable Energy Fund mentioned by Dr Masson for The Bahamas.

Considerable success has already been recorded in the storm-ravaged northern Bahamas and officials assert that the ultimate goal is the development of an energy system that provides a better quality of life for Bahamians with fewer disruptions, increased reliability and a stronger, more resilient economy.

A Category 5 hurricane in September 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic that followed delivered a one-two punch to the Bahamas that destroyed lives, homes, businesses and churches, then prevented outside relief organizations from rendering aid, said Rick Burnette, the outgoing coordinator of domestic disaster response for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

But neither Hurricane Dorian nor the coronavirus outbreak in 2020 could dent the ingenuity and resilience of CBF Bahamas, which consists of six congregations on the islands of Grand Bahama, Abaco and Acklins, said Burnette, who will be succeeded in the disaster response role by North Carolina pastor and disaster recovery specialist Daynette Snead Perez.

Its been though. It was hard. Because of the pandemic, we werent able to lean into our response to Dorian. The teams we had lined up couldnt go, said Burnette, who also serves as CBF field personnel. Yet, we were able to continue to work with the local response contractors in the Bahamas, people who know the communities and who know the affected areas and who were able to coordinate the response.

But nurturing existing cordial relationships between CBF in the U.S. and the Bahamas also suffered during the outbreak, said Ray Johnson, coordinator of CBF Florida.

The pandemic has not eroded those relationships, but it has definitely hindered the depth of them, Johnson said. We compensated by using social media, but that is no substitute for worshiping together.

CBF Florida and CBF Bahamas have a special working and worshiping connection that goes back before the latter was created in 2011. They are constantly visiting us, and we are constantly visiting them. People in both countries are eager to renew those gatherings once things open back up, Johnson said.

In fact, finding opportunities to fellowship with the Bahamian churches will be one of the top orders of business going forward.

Another immediate focus will be sending volunteer teams to help continue the recovery from Hurricane Dorian, he said. We havent been able to put eyes on the ground since the pandemic. A lot of work has been done but there is a lot more to do.

Burnette said a large amount of the credit for work that has been completed so far goes to CBF Bahamas for helping coordinate the activities of disaster response contractors. As a community they have been resilient.

But significant contributions also were made by U.S.-based donors and volunteers before the pandemic began, helping set the stage for progress made throughout last year by local churches and workers, he added.

That included a $5,000 grant from the Fellowship to CBF Florida to meet immediate needs in the Bahamas and the dispatching of volunteers immediately after the storm to repair roofs and assess properties slated for rehabilitation or rebuilding. Spiritual care volunteers were deployed from the U.S. by the end of 2019 to help Bahamians reeling from the death of family and friends as well as from job and property losses, Burnette said.

Materials also were sent before the pandemic, including tents, water filters, generators and solar phone chargers. CBF Florida Disaster Response Coordinator Kenny Phillips made an exploratory visit.

No one knew at the time just how important those initial volunteer visits would be.

In February 2020, volunteers from Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, N.C., and Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky., deployed to the Bahamas to repair churches, homes and other properties and to conduct assessments of other needs.

No one knew at the time just how important those initial volunteer visits would be, Burnette said. In hindsight, I am really pleased with the fact that we were able to get a handful of teams that performed a lot of work and were also exploratory. They helped lay the groundwork moving forward.

While the pandemic blocked volunteer teams and materials from scheduled visits, CBF Bahamas helped coordinate work being completed on more than 20 properties by December 2020, Burnette said.

Many others made the work possible, as well. A lot of entities stepped up. CBF and Canadian Baptists helped get the materials and other resources needed from Florida to the Bahamas. Everyone just stepped up.

But turning the volunteer spicket back on will take time. As of early May there were no groups signed up for Bahamas work.

We are hoping as more teams are vaccinated, they will start lining up. Its the same in Lake Charles, Burnette said of the Louisiana coastal community hit by two hurricanes in 2020. I am confident that CBF churches and other partners will step in.

FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA Three Ecuadorians, two Romanians, one Costa Rican, one Haitian and one Eritrean all pleaded guilty to illegally departing from The Bahamas to attempt to enter the United States, the Department of Immigration reported today.

The migrants were arraigned in the Magistrates Court on Grand Bahama on Monday, May 3, and charged with illegal embarkation.

They were convicted and fined $300 each or in default of payment serve six months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

A statement from the Immigration Department noted: Reports are that on 1st May, 2021, a team of immigration officers rendezvoused with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Cutter William Flores at the Lucayan Harbour to take custody of the above mentioned migrants.

USCG reports indicate that the migrants were interdicted approximately 26 miles off West Palm Beach, Florida. When interviewed by immigration officials, they all admitted to illegally departing from The Bahamas in an attempt to illegally enter the United States.

Additionally, they possessed no document that would permit their legal entry into the United States. As a result, they were all cautioned and charged for the offense of illegal embarkation.

After paying their fines, seven of the migrants were escorted to the Carmichael Road Detention Centre for further processing and to await repatriation to their respective countries of origin.

The sole exception, the Eritrean national, will not face detention or repatriation as he is documented as an asylum seeker in The Bahamas, according to immigration officials.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS When Tim Rodland, partner in Better Homes & Gardens MCR Bahamas, signed the listing agreement for the 293-acre Powell Cay, Abaco, with more than 22,140 linear feet of white sand beach, he wanted the best tools in his selling kit to reach that elusive audience of potential buyers. He called on Concierge Auctions, a company that has redefined the meaning of auction from a last-ditch effort to a smart first-step marketing thrust, to partner.

Only 13 years old, Concierge controls 90 percent of the high-end residential auction market, has broken world records for the highest-priced homes ever achieved at auction, is active in 29 countries and is a success story that would have been implausible had it not been for an increasingly virtual reality world.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Director of the National HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Programme Dr Nikkiah Forbes suggested yesterday The Bahamas must take action or risk a further increase in coronavirus infections.

Forbes comments come as the country tries to mitigate a third wave of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic first hit locally in March 2020.

We are absolutely in the third wave of COVID-19 and if we continue business as usual, cases are going to continue to go up, she said in an interview with Eyewitness News.

We know what it takes to flatten the curve. Public health measures have to be followed; they also have to be enforced.

Forbes noted that measures aimed at stopping the spread implementing robust contact tracing, putting positive cases in isolation and putting high-risk contacts in quarantine are the only way to flatten the curve once again.

If that is not working, then you have to look at other measures, she said.

She explained that when the healthcare system reaches capacity, policymakers are forced to make difficult decisions to prevent the country from becoming vulnerable.

Referring to stricter protocols, Forbes said: That may have to be considered.

Health officials confirmed 26 new cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas on Monday, taking the number of cases in the country to 10,602.

Of the new cases, 19 were on New Providence, four on Grand Bahama, one on the Berry Islands, one on Exuma and one on Andros.

The number of active cases now stands at 669.

A 92-year-old man from Long Island, who died on May 2, has been confirmed as the latest COVID-19 death.

To date, there have been 211 COVID-fatalities, with 24 deaths under investigation.

The Bahamas recorded 336 cases in January and 335 cases in February.

Cases nearly doubled in March with 613 cases.

There were more than 1,200 cases recorded in April.

Last month, health officials indicated various COVID-19 strains were detected in a sampling of positive cases that were sent away for testing.

Health Minister Renward Wells said the trend in the data showed one or more variants of concern likely entered The Bahamas sometime in early March and have rapidly come to dominate infections in the country.

The variants are more infectious than the initial COVID virus and can also make people sicker.

Forbes noted yesterday: We do have to be concerned about that and it could be contributing to what we are seeing, in addition to people not following the public health measures as they did before.

Despite the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and reports of large gatherings, Wells has highlighted a need for more enforcement instead of restrictions.
