Jennifer Garners emotional video on watching ‘The Office’ finale gets sweet responses from the cast – DNA India

Posted: August 26, 2020 at 4:00 pm

American actor Jennifer Garner on Monday local time shared a dramatic video of her emotional reaction to finishing watching The Office series.

The 48-year-old star shared on Instagram a slow-motion, dramatically shedding a tear sort of video right after completing all the nine seasons of the hit show.

Captioning the video, she wrote: "My kids and I have spent months piled on the couch working our way through 'How to Behave as Grownups', aka #TheOffice. Apparently, we are sensitive people, the finale hit us pretty hard. When I realized I'd accidentally shot my farewell testimonial in slo-mo I realized: your Monday might need this, too."

Sported in a Dunder Mifflin (fictional paper sales company featured in the show) printed T-shirt, Garner narrated the video, saying, "You'll never guess which show my kids and I watched an episode a day off through quarantine and guess what? We finished it, and guess what? It gave me some really big feelings."

"Look who needed a big cry and maybe a shower would have been helpful, but it's just nice to know you can still just feel so much passionate about something, right? So thank you. If you've ever heard of the show, The Office, you should try it. It's wonderful," the Daredevil actor added.

on Aug 24, 2020 at 4:12pm PDT

Angela Kinsey, who played one of the leading roles commented on Jennifer's post. She wrote, "Omg!! @jennifer.garner I am only just seeing this (we had no air conditioning for the day so long story short but Im only just catching up on things)!! I love this. I love you and your family and just so you know the finale makes me bawl my eyes out too!"

While Jenna Fischer commented, "Oh Lady!! This is the sweetest and most wonderful post!! Sending you lots of love and if you want to start over @angelakinsey and I are re-watching for the podcast. We are in the middle of Season 3 and have major feelings about lots of moments (Art Show, Dwight comforting Pam...)"

The American sitcom, which depicts the everyday work lives of office employees, was aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013.

The mockumentary had Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, B. J. Novak, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling, Craig Robinson, James Spader, Ellie Kemper and Catherine Tate in the lead roles.

James Anderson 600 Test wickets: Coming out on top vs Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis – DNA India

Posted: at 4:00 pm

James Anderson achieved history in the third and final Test against Pakistan in Southampton as he became the first pacer in history to take 600 wickets. Anderson achieved the feat when he dismissed Pakistan opposition skipper Azhar Ali to enter a club of greats. Only Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble are ahead of him but as a fast bowler, he now stands alone on top. However, James Anderson is best remembered for his ability to come out on top in battles against the top opposition batsmen in his era. The list has some very prestigious names. The fact that Anderson has gotten the better of them consistently is an even bigger tribute to his greatness.

If one looks at the summary of batsmen dismissed, Anderson has gotten the better of Australia skipper Michael Clarke nine times in 26 Ashes Tests as well as David Warner the same number of times. It is no surprise that Australians dominate the list as England play frequently in the Ashes. However, there are two names which are there on the list for the most number of dismissals. Those names add credence to his magnificent career.

Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Jacques Kallis have a combined total of over 40,000 Test runs. These three batsmen dominated the Test scene from the start of the millennium upto their retirement in the middle of the second decade. However, there is one common factor linking all these three greats and that is their dismissals to Anderson.

Sachin Tendulkar has fallen to James Anderson nine times in his career. This is the most he has fallen to any bowler in Tests. Tendulkar was dismissed by Anderson in the 2006 Mumbai Test. In the 2007 series against England, Anderson dismissed Tendulkar at Lords and then twice at the Oval. In 2008, Tendulkar fell to Anderson in the Mohali Test while in 2011, Anderson was on top in Lords and Trent Bridge.

In 2012, Anderson continued his dominance when he dismissed Tendulkar in the Kolkata Test and in Nagpur. Even in the case of Kumar Sangakkara, he dismissed him three times in Sri Lanka and four times in England. For Jacques Kallis, Anderson has achieved more success in England than in South Africa. Anderson is level with Shane Warne for dismissing one of the finest ever in world cricket.

There are other great batsmen in the current era whom Anderson has dismissed. The right-arm pacer has gotten rid of Virat Kohli five times, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson have also fallen prey to him many times although Smith has a better average against Anderson. The ability of Anderson to dismiss the top player in the opposition truly makes him a stand-out.

Can I reach 700? Why not? James Anderson insists he is far from done – DNA India

Posted: at 4:00 pm

James Anderson created history by becoming the first pacer in Test history to take 600 wickets. Anderson achieved the landmark when he got the Pakistan skipper Azhar Ali out on the final day of the third Test between England and Pakistan at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. At 38 years, age is not on James Andersons side. With the England Test schedule uncertain, it could be a long time before Anderson is seen in white clothing again. There have been plenty of speculations that Anderson might announce his retirement from Test cricket and it would bring an end to a magnificent 17-year career where he has transformed Englands bowling fortunes along with Stuart Broad.

However, speaking after the end of the match, Anderson has brushed aside any speculation that he might retire and instead, he wants to focus on the 2021 Ashes as well as reaching yet another magical landmark of 700 wickets.

In this Test, I was really on it and I feel like I've still got stuff to offer this team. I don't think I've won my last Test matches as an England cricketer yet. Can I reach 700? Why not? I still love turning up every day at training, putting in the hard yards and being in the dressing room with the lads trying to forge a win for England. That's all I've really ever bothered about and what I'll keep trying to do, Anderson said.

The point was echoed by skipper Joe Root during the post-match presentation. To be able to stand up and perform in Test cricket over such a long period of time is a fantastic achievement. Credit to him. Absolutely see Broad and Anderson continuing for a long time for us, Root said.

Like Tendulkar in batting

Before James Anderson, Australia pacer Glenn McGrath had held the record for the most wickets by a pace bowler with 563 wickets. Anderson broke McGraths record in 2018 against India at The Oval while in 2020, he has managed to reach the magical figure of 600 wickets.

McGrath has said that just like how Sachin Tendulkar set the bar for Test cricket with his batting, Anderson has set the gold standard when it comes to pace bowling.

No one is ever going to catch Sachin in Test cricket for the amount of runs he's scored (15,921) and the matches he's played (200). Jimmy's done the same for fast bowling. I didn't have the skill level Jimmy has. When he's swinging that ball, both ways, in control, there's no one better, McGrath said.

$79 million a daythats how much the U.K. is losing from tourism collapse – MarketWatch

Posted: at 3:59 pm

The U.K. economy is set to lose 22 billion ($29 billion) from the collapse of international travel during 2020, according to a report published on Wednesday.

Travelers and tourists are staying away from the U.K. in droves because of continuing uncertainty around travel restrictions designed to curb the spread of Covid-19, the report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) found.

As a result, international visitor spending this year could plunge by 78% compared with 2019 levels, equating to a loss of 60 million ($79 million) a day, or 420 million a week, to the U.K. economy, according to WTTC estimates.

Read:Global tourism loses $320 billion in first five months of 2020, says UN

Susannah Streeter, senior investment and markets analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown said the bleak outlook for the travel and tourism sector has been reflected in the stock market.

Carnival CCL, -3.77%, the worlds biggest cruise company, and budget airline easyJet EZJ, +0.02% exited the FTSE 100 earlier this year after a major collapse in their share prices.

For easyJet, there has been a slight recovery this month after bookings came in higher than expected but with some travel corridors closed once again, it is clear the challenges are far from over, Streeter said.

On Wednesday, Carnivals Princess Cruises said that two cruises set to sail in early 2021 would be canceled, blaming border restrictions and the continued uncertainty of airline travel.

We share in the disappointment of this cancellation for guests of our world cruises because it is a pinnacle cruise vacation experience, booked by some of our most loyal guests, Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president, said in a statement.

Carnival said guests currently booked on these canceled voyages will receive a refundable Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equivalent to 100% of the cruise fare plus an additional nonrefundable FCC equal to 25% of the cruise fare paid.

The cancellations follow an announcement on Tuesday by Cunard, also owned by Carnival, that its services will be suspended until March 2021. After very careful consideration and reviewing the latest guidance, we simply dont feel it would be sensible to start sailing again with our current schedule so we have reviewed future itineraries, Cunard President Simon Palethorpe said.

Earlier in August, Ryanair RYA, +1.43%, Europes largest airline, announced that it would reduce its flight capacity by 20% during September and October due to a fall in bookings.

Visitors from France and Spain who may have planned a weekend long city break to the UK will now postpone or cancel, given the freshly imposed quarantine rules. Other European tourists may also stay away, not wanting to run the risk of being confined to hotel rooms if new restrictions are brought in, Streeter added.

According to WTTCs 2020 Economic Impact Report, during 2019, travel and tourism was responsible for almost four million U.K. jobs, or 11% of the countrys total workforce. It also generated nearly 200 billion to the U.K. economy last year - around 9% of GDP.

We urgently need to replace stop-start quarantine measures with rapid, comprehensive and cost-effective test and trace programs at departure points across the country, Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said. This investment will be significantly less than the impact of blunt quarantines which have devastating and far-reaching socio-economic consequences, she added.

Read:Covid-19 turned the hotel industry upside down, but it wont change what people want

Between 2016 and 2018, the largest inbound source markets to the UK were travelers from the U.S. and France, each accounting for 10% of all international arrivals, with Germany coming in third with 9%, and Ireland and Spain in joint fourth place with 7% each, the WTTC said.

Duhalde widely criticised after suggesting ‘coup d’tat’ may be on cards – Buenos Aires Times

Posted: at 3:59 pm

Sparking outrage and controversy, ex-president Eduardo Duhalde has suggested that there will be no midterm elections next year, anticipating a coup dtat since "Argentina is the world champion of military dictatorships."

The former president, who served in office from 2002 to 2003, also predicted that the country is heading towards "a scenario worse than 2001."

"Nobody can ignore that militarism is making a comeback throughout Latin America," Duhalde told the Animales Sueltos television programme, calling it "ridiculous" to expect elections in such a context.

"Im not saying that the coup will come from [President] Alberto Fernndez, lets not personalise this, he said. Argentina runs that risk because this is such a great disaster this is the most complex presidency weve ever had and could generate a worse climate than begone with them all (a reference to the 2001-2002)."

In the same Monday night interview, the Peronist ex-president suggested that the pandemic was costing President Fernndez sleep when he had already told him that he had to take at least three hours a day off from politics if he wished to escape the fate of other presidents, including Duhalde himself.

"Im convinced that the winners should govern and the losers as well. One party cannot govern alone. The president should not permit himself to talk about the past because the past cannot be changed discussing the past is the task of journalists while leaders should not talk about the past but govern," Duhalde concluded.

Duhaldes statements were promptly rejected by politicians across the spectrum. Defence Minister Agustn Rossi dismissed as "an impossible scenario," asserting: "There is a strong commitment to democracy and the Constitution; I dont see any disaster on the horizon."

Rossi ruled out any coup dtat due to the depth of the socio-economic crisis caused by the coronavirus crisis, including the cancellation of next years midterm elections, saying "the Armed Forces are absolutely integrated into the democratic system, perhaps more than any force on the continent."

Speaking to Radio Rivadavia last Tuesday, Rossi said: "Im in touch with military reality every day and I would say that scenario is impossible in Argentina today," going on to explain:"We have a political system with certain tensions but its a strong system. There were elections last year where one candidate won and the other accepted the result, transferring power, and Congress is functioning despite the pandemic, as is the judiciary."

"We all respect Duhalde for his political history and for having been president at a difficult moment for the country," commented the minister when interviewed by FM Delta radio.

"Of everything he said, what is true is that every couple of years in other Latin American countries the armed forces take on greater relevance [President Jair] Bolsonaro in Brazil, the coup in Bolivia, the decision to close down Congress in Peru but it seems to me that transferring all this to Argentina is a very serious error," Rossi concluded.

'Extremely serious'

Human rights leaders also criticised the remarks. The President of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, Estela de Carlotto, was among them, describing the comments as "extremely serious" and disastrous.

I am outraged by what this man said," said Carlotto, declaring in a radio interview that never again is never again.

"It is very important to condemn the sayings of Duhalde," she added. "Duhalde tried to explain today, but the truth is that I didn't understand anything he said.

Later on Tuesday, Duhalde reiterated his comments though he said maybe the length of the coronavirus lockdown had lowered the tone of his analysis.

He stressed again, however, that political leaders are not aware of "what is happening with society's poor and the crumbling middle class."

"I say what I think and I believe I have grounds to do so, he added. In 2001, society did not collapse not because I governed, but because I formed a co-government. We must govern together.

"If we continue fighting, we are going towards an anarchic process in Argentina," said the former president.

President Fernndez, who has met with Duhalde on multiple occasions since taking office, remained silent on the issue, though he did retweet a post on Twitter from Vilma Ibarra, Legal and Technical Secretary to the Presidency.

The government , together with the Argentine men and women, is firm and attentive to prevent them from shrinking our democracy, " read the message.

What Putin wants from Lukashenko – Institute of Modern Russia

Posted: at 3:59 pm

Despite its proclaimed support for the Lukashenko regime, the Kremlin is increasingly frustrated with the Belarusian president, who has skillfully avoided integration with Russia and engaged in a multivector foreign policy with the West. A democratic alternative to Lukashenko with a proper privatization program will likely be accepted by Moscow as it seeks to gain access to key assets of the Belarusian economy.

On February 7, 2020, Vladimir Putin held talks inSochi with Alexander Lukashenko, who came toRussia onaworking visit. Photo: kremlin.ru.

The August 9 presidential election in Belarus was the latest challenge to the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, a strongman known as Europes last dictator, who has ruled the country for 26 years. This time the challenge came from the young female democratic opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. Despite overwhelming popular support, Tikhanovskaya officially won only about 10 percent of the vote, while Lukashenko claimed a landslide victory with over 80 percent. Unprecedented mass protests against the rigged election followed, resulting in police violence and international outrage over the brutal crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations. Still, these were not Lukashenkos only problems.

Another challenge facing the Belarusian president is his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who increasingly wants him gone. On the surface such an assumption might seem strange for at least two reasons: first, Belarus and Russia are members of the Union Statea supranational formation established in 1996and second, both leaders have emerged as resilient autocrats. In reality, their interests stand in direct opposition, and their regimes have diverging socio-economic roots, making Lukashenko and Putin as alike as a dolphin and a shark.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia and Belarus followed very different paths. Boris Yeltsins government in Russia engaged in market reforms and privatization, which resulted in numerous valuable state assets (including oil and gas companies) being sold at discounted prices to a narrow circle of people who eventually became Russias first oligarchs. At the same time, average Russians went through economic ruin, while the countrys social safety net inherited from the Soviet timesfree healthcare, higher education, housingcrumbled.

Public resentment with the reformers ran high, and many people started to feel nostalgic for the stability of the Soviet erasentiments that were harnessed by Vladimir Putin when he came to power in 2000. He exploited the public mood for his own political gain. For example, to please this part of the electorate, he readopted the Soviet anthem and claimed that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. But these concessions were superficial, as major results of the Yeltsin era, such as the privatization of the Russian economys commanding heights, were preserved. While initially Putin did go after some oligarchs (notably, Vladimir Gusinsky, Boris Berezovsky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky), they were not eliminated as a group and remained one of the pillars of his regime. In fact, many of Putins close associates joined the oligarchic ranks over the next two decades, thus showing continuity between Yeltsins and Putins Russia.

Belarus followed a completely different path, one that is more comparable to China than to Russia. Under Lukashenko, who was first elected president in 1994, the commanding heights of the Belarusian economy remained in the states hands. The Soviet-era social safety net was also preserved. The ultimate rejection of wholesale privatization has been an essential trait of the Lukashenko regime ever since. Additionally, Lukashenkos political ambitions have shaped Minsks relationship with Moscow. In the late 90s, when the Union State project was first forged, some members of the Russian elite saw him as a potential successor to Yeltsinas a head of a united statedue to his popularity with large groups of the Russian electorate. But realizing that Lukashenkos leadership would bring imminent nationalization, Yeltsins family ultimately favored Putin, who was not seen as a threat to the status quo.

Over time, as Putins grip on power was secured, the Russian elite started to look with increased interest at Belarusian assets, such as oil refineries and factories. The 2013 incident involving Vladislav Baumgertner, head of Uralkali, a leading global potash producer, is a case in point. Baumgertner was arrested in Minsk, having come on the invitation of the Belarusian prime minister to discuss the escalating conflict between Uralkali and its former partner Belaruskali. The two companies formed an exporting cartel, but Baumgertner accused his Belarusian counterpart of illegal sales on the side and pulled out of the cartel, predicting collapse in potash prices and thus jeopardizing the Belarusian economy, which gets about eight percent of its profit from the potash industry. Baumgertner became Lukashenkos hostage in one of its many wars with Russia over Belarusian industrial assets. He was later extradited to Russia, where the criminal case against him was eventually dropped in 2015.

Given these differences and conflicting interests, why, then, are Minsk and Moscow still formally united in one state? For one, states can be allies for pragmatic reasons, regardless of their ideological differenceslike Maos China and Nixons USA, who joined forces against the USSR, which they both feared. Putin needs Belarus as a geopolitical ally due to its strategic location between Russia and Europe. Pragmatic cooperation with the Lukashenko regime may have led some members of the Russian elite to believe that they could gain access to Belarusian assets. To lure Minsk into a deeper integration, the Kremlin largely subsidized the Belarusian economy, including selling it gas and oil at discounted prices. Still, for many years, Lukashenko refused to be fully integrated with Russia, although he joined Putin in co-founding the Eurasian Unionthe Russian presidents geopolitical pet project. But both Belarus and Kazakhstan, another co-founder of this supposed counterweight to the European Union, refused to surrender any authority to the transnational body, that is, to Russia. Lukashenkos unwillingness to fall in line increasingly frustrated the Kremlin, and feuds between the two countries became regular business, but Belarus dependence on Russian subsidies and Russias security imperatives would always incentivize a compromise.

In 2018, however, tensions started to grow beyond the usual. First, as a result of its geopolitical adventures that cost Russian economy a heavy price and the decline in global oil and consequently gas prices, the Kremlin decided that it needed a more tangible return on its investment in Belarus. Second, the Kremlins ambitious geopolitical projectsthe Nord Stream II and Turkish Stream gas pipelinesbegan to stall. Amidst these challenges, Moscow opted to hike gas prices for Belarus, implying that, should Lukashenko agree to fully integrate into Russia, he would be granted gas contracts at Russian domestic prices.

The timeframe of this last push is based on Putins estimate of the poor state of the Belarusian economy, which would leave Lukashenko no choice but to join Russia. Another factor was Moscows growing concern about Minsks tilt toward the West.

Lukashenko dabbled in foreign policy multivectorism for a while, as did many other post-Soviet states. But since his efforts were largely unsuccessful, Moscow was not worried about his flirting with the West. In recent months, however, the situation has begun to change. Minsks relationship with Brussels has softened. In February, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Minskthe first such visit of a high profile American official in 26 years, which resulted in full restoration of diplomatic relations. Moreover, Lukashenko claimed that NATO would not tolerate a Russian invasion of Belarus and would rightly respond with a war.

All these developments alarmed the Kremlin, which at first tried the usual disciplinary measure of denying Belarus its gas discount, and then reignited the idea of removing Lukashenko from the top job through the August 9 presidential election. Perhaps the 33 Russian mercenaries affiliated with the Kremlin-linked Wagner group who were arrested days before the election had been sent to Minsk at the Kremlins directive to cause disorder (Moscow bluntly denied it, of course).

But after Lukashenko rigged the election and Belarus became embroiled in mass protests and countrywide strikes that utterly undermine his regime, whom does the Kremlin see as his replacement? And wouldnt the victory of a democratic opposition candidate, such as Tikhanovskaya, be Moscows worst nightmare?

To answer these questions, consider the differences between the Russian and Belarusian socio-economic models. With Lukashenko in charge, the key assets of the countrys economy prized by the Russian elite will remain in the hands of the Belarusian state. But if the democratic opposition comes to power, it would most likely launch a privatization program, opening up great opportunities for Russian investors. Russian control over the commanding heights of the Belarusian economy would de facto mean Russian control over the country, even without formal annexation. Such dependence implies that the Belarusian democratic opposition would not be able to successfully challenge the Putin regime.

It is still unclear if Lukashenko will ride out the current storm and, if he does, how long his regime will be able to survive, even with his multivectorism. With Lukashenko in power, Belarus would preserve its status as the last relic of the long vanished USSR, but judging by the magnitude of the August protests, Belarusian people are already rejecting it. As ever, the Kremlin is watching closely.

CBD and Cancer: What is the Best CBD Oil for Cancer – fingerlakes1.com

Posted: at 3:58 pm

The best CBD oil has been presented in several studies as treatment options for cancer patients. Some results were inconclusive while others showed the great potential of CBD oil for cancer care.

CBD is a cannabinoid mostly extracted from hemp plants that contain less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the active cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive side effect of cannabis. The best CBD products for sale can be found in-stores and online.

Cancer is an age-long disease the medical field has been battling with and continues to struggle against. It is caused by changes in a persons genetic makeup that leads to uncontrolled cell growth and forms tumors. Most cancers are caused by DNA alteration or damage, while a few cancers are due to inherited genes.

Like most fatal diseases, cancer does not single out a particular part of the body but instead spreads unless it is treated, usually with methods such as chemotherapy. Cancer has a very high fatality rate but with recent technology and emerging studies, cancer patients now have a much better chance of survival than they would have 20 years ago.

Many cancer treatments are on a clinical trial basis because every cancer is considered unique, and it depends entirely on the genetic makeup of the patient if their body will respond well to any type of treatment. Radiation therapy seems to be the most effective but many patients find themselves exhausted and feeling worse right after.

With this, many are looking for ways to alleviate symptoms of cancer and lessen the harsh side effects of cancer treatments. CBD has been found effective in helping with this.

Some side effects of cancer and undergoing cancer treatments are nausea and vomiting, chronic pain, appetite loss, anxiety, and depression. Patients seek relief from more natural and organic products to lessen their chemical intake, which they get enough from in their medications.

A CBD cancer treatment guide may be able to help cancer patients in their battle against cancer with CBDs many health benefits that prove beneficial. These benefits include:

Along these, CBD also fights anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. Though CBD has many health benefits, it is most important to remember that these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. CBD products are not fully intended to treat cancer or any other medical conditions, but instead are used as supplements to help maintain the overall bodys wellbeing.

A recent study has found CBD to be effective in catalyzing cancer cells death and making glioblastoma cells more sensitive to radiation. Glioblastomas are cancer cells responsible for glioma cancer, the most lethal and malignant primary brain cancer that occurs mostly in adults.

Other studies have also suggested that CBD helps in preventing tumor growth in pancreatic and bladder cancers. Clinical trials and research in breast cancer and prostate cancer therapy using CBD products have also been conducted with promising results.

Many studies already support CBD as a great health supplement to sustain and maintain the body with its daily dose of vitamins and minerals.

The best CBD oil for cancer can be found in many pharmaceuticals alongside other health supplements such as fish oil and the like. Online stores like CBDMEDIC also cater to high-quality CBD products that undergo third-party laboratory testing to ensure decontamination and high-grade hemp strains.

Is CBG the Next CBD? – MSN Money

Posted: at 3:58 pm

Move over CBD, there's a new cannabinoid in town.

It's called CBG (short for cannabigerol), and experts are predicting it could be the next "it" supplement. CBG is vying for CBD status, which is one of the main compounds called cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. They're both from hemp, a cannabis plant like marijuana. CBD (cannabidiol) has blown up in popularity and you can find it in an array of products including supplements, drinks, cosmetics, and lotions. But CBG has mostly flown under the radarat least until recently.

So what is CBG and how is it different from CBD oil and its kissing cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the cannabinoid responsible for marijuana's mind-altering effects?

While we're learning a lot about CBD and THC, there are still a lot of unknowns surrounding CBG and what it is capable of, says Kent Vrana, PhD, chair of the department of pharmacology, Penn State College of Medicine.

Cannabis plants contain 100-plus cannabinoids, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. "CBG has been touted by entrepreneurs as the 'mother of all cannabinoids' because it is the plant precursor to THC and CBD," explains Vrana. "Two different plant enzymes convert CBG to THC or CBD."

CBG shares some structural similarities with THC and CBD. "However, as a drug, it behaves someplace in between CBD and THC, although it does not get you high," Vrana says.

This is likely due to the way it affects your brain, says Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, adjunct assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the global senior director, clinical science for the Canopy Growth Corporation, a group that aims to produce and sell legal marijuana in the Canadian medical market. Canopy Growth Corporation does not produce CBG or CBG-infused products.

"While the mechanism of CBG's action is still not fully understood, it is unlikely that it produces its effects through the cannabinoid receptors" in the brain, Bonn-Miller says. While THC locks into these cannabinoid receptors directly, CBD doesn't depend on that interaction for its effect; CBG likely doesn't either, which may be why it doesn't produce a high like marijuana.

Hemp has a lot of CBD, but just a touch of CBG, which makes it tougher to produce than CBD or THC. "The plant generally doesn't store it or accumulate CBG because it all gets converted to THC, CBD, and another compound," Vrana adds. "But plant biologists are now creating strains to increase the amount of CBG."

This is why CBG is very expensive to make, says Peter Grinspoon, MD, instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also a board member at Doctors for Cannabis, a physician group promoting the broad legalization of marijuana so that it can be studied for potential medical use.

How CBG is produced is important, especially when it comes to taking drug tests. Even though CBD doesn't produce a high, the traces of THC found in CBD may be enough to trigger a failed drug test. This is likely not a risk for CBG, Dr. Grinspoon explains. "It depends on how it is made," he says. "If it is engineered in a lab, there is no risk of flunking a drug test, but if it is from a plant, there may be."

There's a lot of hype, some hope, but very little research in humans about the potential benefits of CBG right now. CBG researchers still don't even know what they don't know about the new "it" cannabinoid.

"With CBD, the enthusiasm outpaces the science, and I am hoping that doesn't happen with CBG," says Dr. Grinspoon. "I get the feeling that we'll be seeing it in cosmetics, lattes, and supplements soon and I am a little concerned that just like CBD, we are going to get a gap between the science and the reality with CBG."

The main potential uses of CBG are anti-inflammatory, Dr. Grinspoon says. It could play a role in helping to treat inflammatory bowel syndromes such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and possibly even irritable bowel syndrome, he says. "We need human studies, but they are very promising in animal studies," he says

Another potential use of CBG is to treat the potentially blinding eye disease, glaucoma, which causes damage when fluid builds up inside the eye and increases pressure. "Cannabis has always been thought of as a treatment for glaucoma, and this molecule may be why," he says.

CBG may also have some antibacterial properties. "In the lab, it kills MRSA [a dangerous bacteria], and we are slowly running out of antibiotics that treat it due to decades of overuse of antibiotics," Dr. Grinspoon says.

It may also help reduce inflammation and protect brain cells in individuals with Huntington's disease, a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. This would be a game-changer for the approximately 30,000 Americans that have the disease and those at risk of inheriting the condition. But the research is in its infancy, Dr. Grinspoon notes.

CBG may also help counteract the intoxicating effects of THC, he says. "If marijuana makes you feel paranoid, CGB may help, and this will allow you to continue using marijuana for medical reasons."

The good news is that, so far, CBG seems safe and non-toxic. "It has been reported that it binds to a non-cannabinoid receptor in the brain that could reduce blood pressure," Vrana says. But, he cautions, this could be dangerous if someone already on blood-pressure-lowering meds were to take it on top of the prescription drug. Because CBD can interact with several common medicationsantibiotics, cholesterol drugs, immunosuppressants, pain medications, and moreand CBG is so similar, check with your doctor before trying CBG.

CBG may increase appetite, which can be beneficial if you are being treated for cancer or another disease and need nourishment, but not so helpful if you are trying to lose weight.

The FDA is currently weighing the best ways to monitor CBD and CBG products. THC is still covered under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), but CBD was removed thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. Now it is up to the FDA to decide how to regulate the sale of CBG and other non-THC products. Until the FDA gets involved with the regulation of CBG, says Dr. Grinspoon, "there is no guarantee that the product contains what is listed on the label. Look for products that have independent lab testing and offers a Certificate of Analysis. This is the best way to assure you are getting what you are paying for.

Depressed elephant at Warsaw Zoo to receive experimental cannabis oil treatment – The Independent

Posted: at 3:58 pm

After a death in the herd left young Fredzia struggling to cope, zoo keepers turned to an experimental new treatment they hope will relieve the effects of depression and anxiety in the mourning elephant.

Erna, the largest female and elder of the African elephant enclosure at Warsaw Zoo, died in March, leaving behind three mourning younger companions to learn their new roles in a fractured group. Fredzia in particular has found it difficult to adapt.

This is a huge game-changer in every elephant group. Elephants might have behavioural problems when the structure of a group changes, Dr Agnieszka Czujkowska, who leads the zoos Animal Rehabilitation department, told the BBC.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

At the time of Ernas death, zoo keepers say Fredzia was depressed and showed signs of grieving. The young elephant has since appeared stressed as it struggles to bond with fellow female Buba.

Dr Czujkowska and colleagues hope an experimental cannabis oil treatment will alleviate Fredzias stress, allowing the elephant to more comfortably get along with the others and restore balance to the herd.

Cannabidiol, known on the market as CBD oil, is extracted from a cannabis plant compound and is thought to increase the brains production of dopamine and serotonin, two chemicals known to affect mood. CBD has no psychoactive effects, so will not intoxicate the elephants.

For the experiment at Warsaw, Dr Czujkowska will monitor the elephants cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone produced in the bodies of humans and animals in stressful situations. A control measurement has already been taken.

We are planning to give them the CBD and measure the cortisol again. This is the experiment. Then we know for sure [the oil] is working or not, Dr Czujkowska said.

Professor Caitlin OConnell of Stanford University, who leads the Mushara research project observing the social structure of elephant groups, told The Independent that CBD should be an appropriate treatment for the Warsaw herd considering the stress relieving effects it can have on humans, who may not cope so differently with loss to their large-eared fellow mammals.

[Elephants] do appear to display similar behaviours to our own in the context of loss, and since we share the same hormones, anything that helps reduce anxiety seems worth trying, Professor OConnell said.

Professor OConnell writes about the complex ways in which elephants cope with grief in Wild Rituals, her upcoming book. In a case not unlike that at Warsaw Zoo which saw the death of matriarch in a herd, zoo keepers gave the younger elephants access to the dead body and two of the deceased animals closest companions spent the entire night sprinkling dirt over the corpse.
