How to Evaluate the Potential of a New Cryptocurrency – Live Bitcoin News
Posted: January 25, 2020 at 2:35 pm
New cryptocurrencies pop up on an almost daily basis nowadays, and there are already thousands of them out there. However you may have noticed that the vast majority of those cryptocurrencies dont really go very far, and many stagnate or even depreciate after a couple of years.
Predicting how a new cryptocurrency will pan out is not easy, and is almost impossible. However there are ways that you can evaluate its potential and determine whether or not it has a good shot at making an impact:
For any cryptocurrency to make its mark, it needs to have some form of utility that is preferably unique in some way. In other words it actually needs to be able to solve a problem or improve on the way things are currently done.
If a cryptocurrency does not have any utility, there wont be any reason for people to want to invest in it. It wont stand out in any way, so why would anyone choose it as opposed to more established cryptocurrencies that have less risk?
Every cryptocurrency is only as strong as the team behind it especially when it is starting out. If you want to know its potential, you need to research the team and find out who they are, what theyve worked on in the past, and how successful their projects have been.
Keep in mind that there are many fake cryptocurrencies that may list prominent individuals and well-known experts in a bid to lure people in. To ensure you dont fall victim, your research must be thorough.
The scarcity of cryptocurrency varies depending on its code and how it is set up. In some cases it may become more difficult to produce the coin as time goes by too.
Because of the principle of supply and demand, scarcity is important to the future potential of any cryptocurrency. The more limited the supply, the more confident you can be that its value will increase if there is sufficient demand.
Just because a new cryptocurrency has good utility, it doesnt necessarily mean that people will flock to it automatically. Instead, the team behind it needs to have a strong adoption strategy that will market the cryptocurrency.
Most new projects are open about their adoption strategy and include it as part of their road map. It is up to you to look into the strategy and decide whether or not it is a viable plan that can live up to expectations.
Although perceived value may seem ephemeral, it can actually be a tangible factor in the potential of a cryptocurrency. The more positive indicators are present, the greater the perceived value of the cryptocurrency will be and the more demand there will be for it.
To determine the overall perceived value of a cryptocurrency, you will need to look at any and all factors associated with its development. That includes any milestones it has already achieved, key collaborations or partnerships, media coverage, and so on.
Evaluating the potential of new cryptocurrencies is essential if you dont just want to trade bitcoin but would like to explore other ICOs and opportunities. It will require quite a bit of time and effort on your part however, and you need to carefully go over the information that is available.
Always remember that there are no guarantees that a cryptocurrency will ultimately live up to its potential. That being said, if you do carefully evaluate the potential it has you will be able to make far better decisions on the whole.

Bitcoin Indicator that Crashed Price to $3.1K Returns: The Dreaded Death Cross – newsBTC
Posted: at 2:35 pm
Bitcoin is looking to repeat a technical pattern that crashed its price to $3,120 in late 2018.
The leading cryptocurrency by valuation made a rebound from levels near $13,920 during June 2019. It plunged by more than 53 percent in the later sessions, falling to establish a local bottom towards $6,410. Entering January 2020, an upside recovery pushed bitcoins rate to a swing top of $9,190.
The latest move uphill improved the cryptocurrencys interim bullish bias. Analysts predicted further gains, expecting that investors would consider bitcoin as a haven against gloomy macroeconomic sentiments, including the Federal Reserves injection of $500 billion into the repo market that could raise demand for hedging assets.
Nevertheless, a dreaded technical indicator is giving an alarming view of the bitcoin market. It shows that the cryptocurrencys recent gains are a part of a more prominent drop that may come later and crash the price to as low as $2,300.
So it appears, the bitcoins latest price cycle is strikingly similar to the one it formed upon establishing circa $20,000 as its all-time high.
Cycle 1 in the chart below shows the price corrected wildly upon the top formation. It made lower highs on each move upward while maintaining the long-term selling outlook. As it did, bitcoin also formed a Death Cross when its long-term moving average (blacked) closed below its near-term moving average (blued).

The cryptocurrency later struggled to move above the blued wave. And the more the price stayed below it, the higher the selling sentiment grew. Nine months after the formation of the Death Cross, the bitcoin-to-dollar exchange rate had totaled it plunge by 83.78 percent.
Cycle 2 appears like a dwarfed version of Cycle 1. Bitcoin is forming lower highs after forming a local top. Its move downward has remade the Death Cross. And, at last, the price is struggling to break above the blued wave the long-term moving average as is visible in bulls latest efforts.
The two widely distanced yet identical cycles serves a warning sign: Bitcoins downtrend is far from over and its price could at least plunged by 83 percent. That would bring the bears downside target close to circa $2,300.
Observing bitcoin on a larger timeframe, such as a weekly one, improves the cryptocurrencys bullish scenario. As covered by NewsBTC earlier, the price has jumped above its 50-weekly MA (blacked), a bias-defining technical support/resistance.

Meanwhile, on the daily chart, defending the same 50-period support could reduce the possibility of a breakdown towards $2,300.

Taking a cruise? Top trends and best bets for 2020: Fentons favorites – pennlive.com
Posted: at 2:34 pm
If this is your year to take that well-deserved cruise vacation, you are not alone. According to the Cruise Lines International Association global demand for cruising is expected to reach 32 million passengers in 2020, including a whopping 82 percent repeat factor.
Cruising offers travelers the ability to visit multiple far-flung destinations in total comfort with few (if any) hassles.
Due to steady growth, 24 ships are scheduled to debut in 2020, including new cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages and Ritz-Carlton plus several expedition ships being launched around the world.
Below is a list of my top cruising trends for this year :
Before you book your vacation, sit down and talk with an expert at your favorite travel agency. You want to be sure you are getting on the right ship, at the right price. Ask about special sales , promotions and added amenities. This includes: any 2 for 1 fares; free or discounted air programs; onboard incentives; complimentary dining choices; and the onboard entertainment/shore excursions.
You should also ask your travel agent about the onboard attire. Proper dining attire varies from ship to ship, depending on the itinerary and length of the voyage. Most cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes, but no one wants to get dressed up for dinner and find they are sitting next to another couple wearing t-shirts and sweatpants.
In addition, I would recommend flying to your embarkation port the day before the cruise and ask about all pre- and post-cruise hotel packages.
Here is a sampling of some of the cruise lines I have experienced and recommend:
ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL (mass/contemporary). Theres a reason Royal Caribbean continues to be considered the best in the industry for hard-to-please teens. With many itineraries (Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda) on sale, Royal Caribbean is easy and convenient, with year-round sailings from Baltimore and New Jersey. Royal Caribbean boasts the biggest ships in the world, plus guests can enjoy two private islands, Coco Cay and Labadee.
CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE (mass/contemporary). If youre looking for nonstop fun, food and activities, youve found it onboard Carnival. I took my two granddaughters on Carnivals Horizon and Sunrise roundtrip NYC to Bermuda and we had a laugh-out-loud time, with 5,000 of our new best friends. Carnival is designed for families on a budget. There is literally something to do (and eat) every hour of the day and night. Activities include their first onboard roller coaster, a water park, parades and story times, a ropes course and much more. Carnival sails year round from Baltimore and NYC to Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, and New England and Canada.
CELEBRITY CRUISES (premium). Celebrity Cruises will launch its 14th ship, the Apex, this April in Europe and reposition to Fort Lauderdale for seven-day Caribbean sailings this November. Celebrity Cruises mantra is modern luxury and its hip, cutting edge atmosphere resonates with travelers wanting upscale accommodations, award-winning dining venues, cocktail lounges and entertainment. The newly remodeled Celebrity Summit sails roundtrip to Bermuda from New Jersey and several ships cruising the Caribbean are on sale now through March. Ask about special sales to South America and New Zealand, and Celebrity Xpedition, offering the glamping in the Galapagos with dining, drinking and sleeping on the top deck.
HOLLAND AMERICA LINE (premium). For more than 140 years Holland America has been a leader in the premium cruising category with 14 mid-size to large ships with gracious service. A great value for the money, Holland America was the first cruise line in Alaska. A terrific, multi-generational cruise vacation, Holland America has many trips on sale, particularly in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe. Travelers looking to explore Canada and New England can check out several cruises between April and October. Ask about suite bookings and savings offering free drinks, dining and gratuities through Feb. 28.
OCEANIA CRUISES (premium plus). With six elegant, mid-size ships, Oceania offers fine dining under the direction of Master Chef Jacque Pepin. Oceania is an excellent choice for adults wanting a traditional, gracious and upscale experience. With a recent $100-million refurbishment, OceaniaNext will debut suites furnished exclusively with Ralph Lauren dcor. Ask about savings and all-inclusive options with O-Life Choices and special 2-for-1 fares and premium economy air upgrades on voyages to the Caribbean, Europe and the Baltics. Convenient sailings to New England, Canada & Bermuda roundtrip New York from July through October are on sale now.
REGENT SEVEN SEAS (luxury). The most all-inclusive cruise line in the luxury market, including free unlimited excursions, free intercontinental business class air, free wi-fi, free beverages, free transfers and so much more. The brand new Seven Seas Splendor debuts in February with Luxury Perfected promotions throughout 2020. Regent Seven Seas offers spacious suites and an outstanding level of service with all-inclusive voyages to Alaska, the Mediterranean, northern Europe, Caribbean and Asia on sale now. Ask about New York City cruises also on sale to Canada, New England, Eastern Seaboard, Bermuda and Transatlantic plus special kids pricing throughout the summer.
SEABOURN (luxury). Seabourn is an award-winning, ultra-luxury, all-inclusive and oh-so-stylish small ship cruise line for upscale and sophisticated travelers. With a private club atmosphere, the Seabourn fleet (5 ships) has taken onboard dining to a new level with the ongoing partnership with world-renowned American chef and restauranteur, Thomas Keller. Ask about Seabourns 2020 Signature Savings Event features exceptional savings with complimentary verandah upgrades, shipboard and air credits plus an array of value-added amenities throughout the year - especially in the Caribbean, Alaska and Asia. Ask about 2020 Alaska & British Columbia Ventures by Seabourn voyages with Zodiac up-close cruising and kayak excursions with Seabourns excellent expedition team. The official cruise partner of UNESCO World Heritage, Seabourn also offers onboard entertainment programs featuring An Evening with Sir Tim Rice and guests will sail with him on the April 8, 2020 voyage.
SILVERSEA CRUISES (luxury). With over 25-years in luxury small ships cruising, Silversea sails to over 900 destinations on all seven continents, more than any other cruise line. World renowned for devoted, discreet and experienced onboard service, Silversea is also the leader in luxury expedition and adventure cruising. Heading into 12 years of expedition cruising, Silversea 2020/2021 voyages will highlight both Polar Regions (Svalbard, Norway; Lake Myvatn, Iceland; Greenland and East Greenland; Antarctica; and the Falkland Islands) in the summer and winter. Silversea Silver Origin is the brand-new destination-specific ship sailing the Galapagos.

Three Keys To Running A Successful Vacation Rental Business – Forbes
Posted: at 2:34 pm
Starting a vacation rental business is a potentially great way to grow personal wealth, even if you arent a homeowner or if you have bad credit. Making the business successful and maintaining good ratings, however, requires a slightly different type of business acumen.
The way to a customers heart in this business is by offering them a valuable product an excellent accommodation to consume, and making it easy for them to do so. Running a vacation rental business over the past few years has taught me that guests satisfaction depends on three main factors:
1. Product Offering
Most of the listings we find on platforms such as Airbnb or Vrbo are entire home units or private rooms within a home. Offering a more unique, less obvious type of space could provide you a cutting edge over your competitors. Get creative and diversify your basket of hosted properties. Boats/yachts, bungalows, private islands, oceanfront villas, treehouses, cabins and even castles are now being listed.
Amenities can also give your space an advantage over competitors. As we can see with the high demand for condos in the United States, high-rises that offer the best amenities can demand the highest rents. Popular amenities include a weight room, games room, swimming pool and/or hot tub and electronic locks on the doors. Amenities that are now being considered necessities include free Wi-Fi, parking, desks or workspaces, entertainment systems and access to a full kitchen.
As great as they are, amenities can only go so far. Taking it a step further and going beyond the basics could add major value to your product offering. Consider providing an airport shuttle service, meals and other pet- and family-friendly services.
Location is another paramount feature of your product offering. Tourists usually travel with the intent of visiting a nearby city and all its major attractions. The closer your property is to public transportation, famous landmarks, etc., the more likely you are to run a successful operation. First, however, you should research your citys/states/countys rules on hosting. In New York City, for example, Airbnb recently implemented a one host, one home policy, which prevents multiunit property owners from running a vacation rental business similar to a licensed hotel that is subject to additional taxes for doing so.
2. Product Marketing
Hosts who offer a fully compliant, conveniently located place to stay with the top amenities can make a killing, if people know about their product. Fortunately, sites like HomeAway and Airbnb are in such high demand that most travelers already know where to go looking.
High demand has also churned out a high supply of listings, which means hosts are under pressure to make their listings stand out. This makes having great pictures absolutely critical. Airbnb claims hosts earn up to 40% more by using professional photos in their listings.
Some platforms offer this service for free. For hosts more inclined to DIY or who don't have professional photography access, you can still put your best foot forward:
Try to use a professional DSLR camera with a wide-angle lens.
Take bigger photos for optimal resolution, using landscape orientation whenever possible.
Aim to create depth in each photo for a 2-D effect.
Make good use of natural sunlight.
In each room, remember to:
Accent the bedrooms with contrasting pillows and shams.
Complement the living room with flowers.
Include quirky works of art in your pictures. They give your space more charm and character.
Ensure the kitchen and bathroom are sparkling clean.
3. Good Reviews
Important as visuals are, good reviews remain an essential part of your marketing strategy. Furthermore, positive reviews bump up your ratings as a host and can easily become the deal-breaker when guests are deciding between two properties.
Negative reviews, however, are a deal-breaker in favor of the competition. Fortunately, there are some ways you can try to avoid receiving them:
Provide any relevant information for the guests stay in a check-in message. Attach this message to the house manual, which should provide further instructions on how to use/configure household items such as the remote control.
Be available for questions or concerns during the first 24 hours of every stay. If necessary, outsource the communication. This is important because most kerfuffles can be quashed with simple communication.
Be generous with free stuff wine, mints on the pillows, chocolates, fruit baskets, snacks. These are simple pleasures that go a long way to getting a positive review.
On platforms that permit it, leave your guest review immediately after checkout. This notifies your guest, and conveniently, guests can only see the review once they write their host review. Theres no guarantee their reviews will be positive. Regardless, go ahead and post a positive review for the guest, and then sit back and relax.
Building good relationships with your customers goes a long way to earning that five-star review every host wants. If you plan to scale your business, these reviews will likely be the first item that prospective property owners read about you. Many homeowners who list their properties for short-term rental have multiple properties they could use your help with. According to a study published in 2017 by CBRE, multiunit hosts are a key driver of Airbnb revenue growth.Yet thats also the reason various states are cracking down on multiunit property owners who host their space without having to pay the same taxes as hotels.
Remember to fully research all the rules around hosting for your city, state or county. An unfailing way to receive a bad review is to have your guests learn the space youre hosting is not fully compliant, which may result in them having to look for new accommodation. However, by offering a superior product with the right marketing and real positive reviews, youll be on your way to a successful side hustle through vacation rentals.

Things To Do In The Maldives (That Arent Swimming With The Mantas) – TheTravel
Posted: at 2:34 pm
Considered one of the worlds superior honeymoon destinations, the Maldives has a lot to offer travelers. Featuring a string of exclusive resorts, high-end restaurants, aquatic activities, and sublime scenery, its no wonder that people travel from all over the world just to spend a few days on the island nation. There are endless things to see and do in the Maldives, but as most people have limited schedules and limited budgets, we thought wed narrow it down to the things you simply have to add to your Maldives bucket list. Check them out below!
Everyone knows that swimming with the mantas is one of the most popular activities in the Maldives. But for those who dont enjoy actually interacting with sea life, there is still the opportunity to get up close and personal with the fish at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant.
The restaurant is located on Rangali Island in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. The prices may not be cheap at this high-end eatery, but how many times in your life will you have the chance to eat a meal in the company of a sea of fish?
There are also other undersea restaurants and wine cellars in the Maldives that are worth checking out. You can even find underwater spas in some resorts. Who said you had to get wet to get a glimpse of life under the sea?
The Maldives is home to about 1200 islands, and while you probably wont get the opportunity to visit all of them, it is worth taking some time out of your trip to visit the less touristy islands. Some of the Maldivian islands specifically cater to tourists and are home to exclusive resorts where youll be treated like royalty. Others are a little more down to earth.
A lot of resorts in the Maldives will offer day trips to neighboring islands, where youll be able to witness what life is like for locals. As Girl Tweets World points out, there are many locals in the Maldives that dont work in the tourism industry, and traveling to the lesser-known islands will teach you a little about their way of life.
Visiting locations such as Huraa Island might not be as relaxing as staying within the confines of your resort, but it is eye-opening. And its a great way to immerse yourself in the authentic local culture.
The Maldives is renowned for being one of the worlds most romantic honeymoon destinations. Many of the resorts are designed to offer the most magical experience for newlyweds and there are several activities on offer that are ideal for two people in love. Like having a picnic on your own private sandbank.
According to Forbes, this is how you really experience the Maldives in style. On the island of Amilla Fushi, youll have the opportunity to enjoy your own private picnic on your own private sandbank. All youll be able to see for miles around is calm turquoise water and pristine white sand while you indulge in authentic Maldivian delicacies from your pre-packed picnic basket. What could be better?
Picnics are romantic at the best of times. With the added picturesque scenery and the delicious rich cheese and champagne, you cant go wrong.
Though most of your time in the Maldives will undoubtedly be spent relaxing, youll also have a few opportunities to learn about the local culture and witness some age-old traditions that the Maldivian people have practiced for generations. One of them is the Boduberu performance.
The Boduberu consists of singing, dancing, and drumming, and sets off a lively atmosphere that gets everybody in the mood for a celebration. The best way to watch a performance is to travel to the inhabited islands of the Maldives, which can be organized as a day trip through your resort.
If you dont want to leave the island youre staying on, many resorts also host Bodubery performances for the convenience of their guests. Find out where the closest performance to you is being held and make sure that you leave room in your schedule for it. You wont be disappointed!
Most people who visit the Maldives forget all about paying a visit to the capital city of Male. Located on an island that is only about 1.25 square miles in size, Male may be one of the worlds smallest capital cities, but its also one of the liveliest. If its culture youre after, youll be totally satisfied with the museums, markets, and mosques standing in the colorful city.
Being an Islamic nation, its important to remember to adhere to traditional Islamic requirements while visiting the city. When entering any mosques, women must wear head scarfs and all visitors must wear pants instead of shorts.
According to TripSavvy, you can walk around the entire city in only a few hours. Among the best sights to see is the National Museum, which will give you an insight into the fascinating history of the Maldives. You can also take a guided tour of Male and have the major points of interest pointed out to you during a leisurely stroll around the city.

Breathe Hiking Shelter Island’s Westmoreland property leads to spectacular views Westmoreland offers a walk that’s modestly – Northforker
Posted: at 2:34 pm
Westmoreland offers a walk thats modestly challenging, about a mile long, picturesque and full of history.
Westmoreland Drive is a public road, coursing through the area that was at one time all known as Westmoreland. Today, the center of the area is Westmoreland Farm, privately owned by the Roe family.
Although not open to the public, the farm contains iconic landmarks that are easily visible from the road. The farm radiates from an old clock and water tower, built in 1900 by the estates original owner, Thomas M. Turner.
WESTMORELAND DRIVE
Access: This is a public road, but bordering properties are private.
Length: 1 mile, almost all flat.
Highlights: Historic farm, estate and buildings.
When it was built, it was the tallest structure on the Island, and probably in Suffolk County. Turners Italian sunken garden, filled with Italian marble statuary, is kept neat, but allowed to show its age, only enhancing its enigmatic beauty.
Walking down the road, youll pass quiet pastures, a stunning allee of linden trees lining the road into the farm, and four horses who are usually out in the field. They are a treat for children to observe up close. Their owner, Karen Roe, only requests that visitors dont feed them, since they need to adhere to an appropriate diet. Across from the horse pasture, a long swath of lawn stretches almost to where Westmoreland meets West Neck Creek.
The Roe family owns this land, once an airstrip, but has sold its development rights to ensure houses wont be built on it. They have dedicated it to James and Margaret Roe, the patriarch and matriarch of the family, who at one time owned all of Westmoreland. In 1967, when James Roe was a powerful Democratic leader, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and his wife Ethel flew to Shelter Island and landed in Westmoreland, where the Roes hosted a barbecue in their honor, as was their custom, with many children enjoying hayrides around the farm.
As I walk down the road, one of my favorite houses has always been the Primrose, a Tudor that looks like it was dropped in from another era. It was built by Turner as a mansion for himself and his wife. He was a close friend of Broadway producer Charles Frohman, actress Maude Adams and Scottish playwright J.M. Barrie, who visited Shelter Island and wrote his play Peter Pan with Ms. Adams in mind. The play was already a hit in London with its British cast in the summer of 1905 when rehearsals were underway to open it on Broadway, with Ms. Adams as Peter.
Turner offered his Shelter Island estate for an outdoor rehearsal, bringing in contractors, electricians and mechanics to mount a production of Peter Pan on the grounds. Wire was strung from the tower to the roof of the cow barn to enable the actors to fly.
The waters of West Neck Bay and nearby ponds were perfect lagoons for the plays island setting, and its easy to picture child actors swinging from the branches of the lindens and chasing each other across the grass, so much more naturally than onstage. Islanders were all welcome, along with many out-of-town guests who filled the Islands hotels and guest houses. The one-time rehearsal went off successfully, and was celebrated with a feast afterward.
Thereafter, Turner referred to the estate as Never Never Land, which is the title of a wonderful book by Frances Roe Kestler.
This book on Westmoreland is full of details about all of Shelter Islands history as well as recollections about the Roes and all the other families who came to buy surrounding properties, houses with names like Osprey, Overlook, and Hawthorne.
Westmoreland, like any neighborhood, became a network of families who were very close. Over the years, as friends passed away or moved on, its been difficult to avoid a sense of sadness as I walk past their homes. I still feel touched by their spirits. Frances Kestler quotes J.M. Barrie as saying, The finest dream in the world is when everyone I have loved is still alive.
The antidote to melancholy is rounding the curve on the road, meeting the new neighbor children who are selling friendship bracelets. As I select my bracelet, I happily learn that this family now lives in a Westmoreland house where my close friends grew up. Life goes on.
The walk up and down Westmoreland Drive is just about a mile, and virtually flat except for one hill sloping down next to a pond near the entrance to Westmoreland. We all call the entrance the gate, although we dont remember an actual gate ever being there.
If you want to challenge yourself a bit, turn left out of the gate and continue on West Neck Road, up a hill and around a bend. Cross the Nostrand/Brander Parkway intersection and continue down the length of Bootleggers Alley. This short lane, whose name alludes to the Islands prohibition era enterprises, offers the reward as you reach the end. You may be feeling the cold by then, but its worth it.
At the end of the lane, a panoramic view of Peconic Bay spreads before you. And it is not unusual to have the entire vista to yourself. Bend down and run your hands through the water and pick up a shell or two, just to remind you of where you are lucky enough to be.

The Impeachment Trial Is The End Of Democracy As We Know It – WBUR
Posted: at 2:33 pm
Regardless of whether youre watching every minute of coverage, or just the highlights, the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump is coming across as two different events.
The House managers prosecuting the articles of impeachment against Trump charging that he abused the power of the presidency to cheat in the 2020 election, then obstructed Congresss investigation of the same are engaged in, or are attempting to engage in, an actual trial.
You know: evidence, witnesses, facts.
The presidents defense team is performing for Fox News and other conservative media outlets. There is no discussion of evidence, witnesses or facts, just a recitation of blustery talking points, grade-school deflections, legalistic doublespeak and Trumpian conspiracies. Its all recycled material.
The House managers evidence is recycled, too its a summary of the case they built during the impeachment inquiry.
This is a show trial, pure and simple, in which Republicans stated goal is to exonerate the defendant.
The House managers very much want to provide senators with new information, by putting witnesses with first-hand knowledge on the stand, people such as John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, Mike Pompeo, Mike Pence and Trump himself.
It stands to reason that a man as confident of his innocence as Trump would be eager to get all the evidence out there and clear his name, right? It stands to reason that the senators sworn to judge the presidents guilt would want the same thing, right?
Wrong.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and his merry band of quislings, know that Trump is guilty. Thats why they want this proceeding over as quickly as possible. To call it a trial, as Ive argued, is disinformation. This is a show trial, pure and simple, in which Republicans stated goal is to exonerate the defendant.
The moment hes acquitted, we know Trump will immediately crow about his glorious exoneration, because his entire brand is based on impunity the idea that he is powerful enough to say and do whatever he wants without consequence.
This exoneration, in turn, will establish a new precedent: for Trump himself, and all future presidents. They'll forevermore be able to pressure a foreign government to dig up dirt on opponents, freely subvert our elections and block Congress from investigating them.
This behavior will no longer be abuse of power. It will become standard operating procedure.
In a sense, the GOP senators will be ratifying the lesson ofthe 2000 election (which George W. Bush won only because the Supreme Courts conservative majority voted to halt the recount in Florida), of the weapons of mass destruction hoax that lead to the war in Iraq, and of theSandy Hook slaughter of 26 people, including 20 first graders. In each of these situations, Republicans faceda choice. They could either cling to power or faceaccountability. In each case, theychose power.
The only way to repudiate this culture of sociopathic nihilism and lawlessness is for citizens of good faith to become more politically active.
The transformation of Trump from party pariah a man Lindsay Graham called a kook a loser and a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot-- to a de facto monarch is the inevitable culmination of this moral rot. Any time you ignore what could become an evil force, Graham observed four short years ago, you wind up regretting it. These days, Graham isnt ignoring that force. Hes become its loudest defender.
Now Trumps Republicans will be on the record for all of eternity.
And for what? To prop up a corrupt and cruel grifter whom most of them despise and mistrust. The only thing greater than their shame, apparently, is their shamelessness. They needed Trump to find that shamelessness. Thats what hes given them and all it cost them was our constitutional democracy.
The only remaining remedy is the 2020 election, an election already besieged by voter suppression, gerrymandering and the perverse math of the Electoral College and, thanks to Mitch McConnell, foreign subversion, too.
The only way to repudiate this culture of sociopathic nihilism and lawlessness is for citizens of good faith to become more politically active. We can, and should, watch what's happening on the floor of the Senate in despair and outrage.
But each of us who feels that distress has a duty to act.
If you care about our democracy, make your plan.

Emojiland Asks, Is It Really So Great to Be Alive? – TheaterMania.com
Posted: at 2:33 pm
Emojiland was a stand-out at the 2018 New York Musical Festival and perhaps the last production to be able to leverage that platform. On a roster of underwhelming projects that ranged from overinflated to overly earnest, Emojiland had a gimmicky concept that wrapped its arms around some big ideas with surprising success: simulation theory, xenophobia, and the corruption of monarchical power among them (cue Lesli Margherita in a princess crown dancing with the egomaniacal power of a birthday girl on My Super Sweet 16).
Now in a full production directed by Thomas Caruso at the Duke on 42nd Street, Emojiland still has all of those assets to its credit not to mention a crystal-clear spirit of good intentions and optimism (or at least anti-nihilism). It all just feels a little less remarkable in its new quarters, even with its substantially enhanced production value (scenic designer David Goldstein has built a towering pixelated paradise while costume designer Vanessa Leuck charmingly reimagines a throng of emoji lewks).
There are a lot of moving pieces in the plot. But to make a too-long story shorter, Emojiland is set in the sunshiny innards of an iPhone on the eve of an update, which will bring new emoji to town and perhaps add nuanced layers of feeling to the existing ones at least that's what the perpetually happy Smize (the musical's coauthor Laura Schein) is hoping for. What the update ends up bringing Smize is a new friend by the name of Nerd Face (George Abud), a scientist of sorts who values truth and curiosity, and is the polar opposite of Smize's bullish cool-guy boyfriend, Sunny (Jacob Dickey).
On the regal side of Emojiland, the update creates a Prince (Josh Lamon) to join Princess (Margherita) in her castle a development Princess is not too keen on. Prince and Princess quickly become besties, but they're not willing to press their luck with another upgrade that might bring a King or Queen into the fold. So with some advisement from Man in Business Suit Levitating (Max Crumm bringing subtle capitalist villainy), Prince and Princess order the construction of a firewall, pedaling fear of invading emoji. Meanwhile, a spurned Nerd Face befriends resident outcast Skull (Lucas Steele, giving dark Jud Fry energy in an operatic tenor), which leads him to agree to assist Skull incommitting suicide.
It's a pretty heavy turn of events, but in the innocuous world of emoji, even the most disturbing things can stay in the realm of thought experiment: Does life have inherent value? Is it rational to fear the outsider? Can someone's insides be at odds with their outsides? Schein and her coauthor Keith Harrison capitalize on that strength, even as the journey through all of these plot points becomes a bit of a slog.
Schein and Harrison break it up with pleasant, pop-inspired songs, each with a different degree of re-listen value. Smize's character song "Sad on the Inside," for example, isn't going to make anyone's list of favorite showtunes, whereas Police Officer's Act 2 ballad "A Thousand More Words" is a total showstopper in the extraordinary hands of Felicia Boswell. And I thought no one could top Natalie Weiss's Act 1 solo "Stand For" as Police Officer's romantic partner Construction Worker.
I'm inclined to say that Boswell and Weiss are the musical's power couple, but Emojiland, of all things, has stiff competition in that category: Lamon and Margherita (who death-drops in her big solo "Princess Is a Bitch") are an endless delight to us and each other in their royal partnership; and as Nerd Face, Abud partners beautifully with both Skull and Smize, bringing incredible dimension to a character with one personality trait. Emojiland in a vacuum ranges from solid to underwhelming, but performance-wise, this production is an embarrassment of riches (I mean, who doesn't want to see Ann Harada perform a musical number as a Pile of Poo?).
Sure, by the time Nerd Face unearths his heroic side to save Emojiland from a permeating virus, you're a little fatigued from the techy metaphors and gamified atmosphere as if you've stared too long at the screen of your iPhone. But to Emojiland's great credit, there aren't many other off-Broadway musicals with a whole host of performances that can be described by the "Shocked Face With Exploding Head" emoji.

Why Senate Republicans should eagerly call witnesses to testify | TheHill – The Hill
Posted: at 2:33 pm
With impeachment framed as an exercise in moral nihilism, Republicans and Democrats have now entered the field of battle over witnesses, with each side bafflingly defending the political interests of the other. House Speaker Nancy PelosiNancy PelosiCNN's Axelrod says impeachment didn't come up until 80 minutes into focus group On The Money Presented by Wells Fargo Social Security emerges as flash point in Biden-Sanders fight | Dems urge Supreme Court to save consumer agency | Trump to sign USMCA next week Veronica Escobar to give Spanish-language response to Trump State of the Union address MORE withheld delivery of the impeachment articles in an effort to secure witnesses during the Senate trial, including former White House national security adviser John Bolton. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnellAddison (Mitch) Mitchell McConnellCNN's Axelrod says impeachment didn't come up until 80 minutes into focus group Democrats feel political momentum swinging to them on impeachment Impeachment throws curveball in Iowa to sidelined senators MORE sees absolutely no need for new witnesses. He said, This is a political process. There is not anything judicial about it.
However, with acquittal certain, the president actually needs witnesses to testify. How else can he justify his tweets of total exoneration, as he did after the special counsel investigation? Witnesses would give his acquittal the patina of legitimacy. Without any witnesses, the president and Senate Republicans up for reelection become vulnerable to claims of a sham trial or, even far worse, an orchestrated coverup rooted in a fear of the truth.
The absence of witnesses during the impeachment trial of Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump says his advice to impeachment defense team is 'just be honest' Trump expands tariffs on steel and aluminum imports CNN's Axelrod says impeachment didn't come up until 80 minutes into focus group MORE would only draw unwanted attention to this particular lack of openness. One could almost hear the chants of what is he hiding? reverberating loudly from the steel rafters at the Democratic National Convention this summer. Denying witnesses is also off brand for the president himself, as his primary defense for nearly all of his transgressions in office has been transparency. Trump brazenly obstructed justice in full view of the public during the special counsel investigation and openly called on a foreign power to investigate his domestic political rivals from the White House.
With the outcome not in doubt, the wisest move by the president would be to promote witness testimony, not of Hunter Biden, but of those who participated in carrying out his perfect call directive precisely because of its damning nature. Just get everything out. No more drips and drabs of tantalizing details to extend the Ukraine story closer to the election. By contrast, although Democrats desperately claim that they need witness testimony from those involved, such as Bolton and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, their testimony will not result in conviction.
Taking the effects of past testimony as prelude, further testimony will not sway the hearts and minds of independents, much less the Trump base. But it could make Democrats seem ineffective, in the way that repeated failures to defeat ObamaCare did to Republicans such as Eric Cantor and John Boehner. Extending the impeachment process could also hamper the several Senate Democrats vying to be the party nominee this year.
In an actual court of law, it takes but one witness to establish a fact if the jury finds that witness credible. So five witnesses are no more compelling or persuasive than one. If Republicans could buy the time to drag out the impeachment trial into the Democratic primary season by interviewing redundant witnesses, why would they not do so? If Democrats could end the trial with questions left unanswered and hanging over the reelection campaign of the president, why would Republicans acquiesce to that?
The facts are known. The truth is obvious. Trump personally orchestrated the pressure campaign against the newly elected president of Ukraine to secure an investigation of his political rival in the election. That pressure campaign included the quid quo pro in the form of a prized White House visit and holding up nearly $400 million in vital American military aid that Congress had already appropriated and that the president had approved.
However, with Senate Republicans grotesquely eager to simply acquit the president, the strategy of Pelosi holding out for witnesses in the trial was politically counterproductive, even if it was morally, ethically, and legally correct. Without witnesses, Trump will have to play defense on the issue of impeachment and Ukraine in 2020, especially if one assumes more and more information will find its way into public view in the coming months.
With witnesses in the trial, the claims of exoneration by the president will find little credible resistance in the public. So with a nihilistic tip of the hat to the political spectacle that impeachment has turned into, but given the damning state of the record to date, on the question of witnesses, here is to hoping McConnell is successful in orchestrating a Senate whitewash.

Abortion brings Haitianisation of The Bahamas – Bahamas Tribune
Posted: at 2:33 pm
EDITOR, The Tribune.
The Bahamian champion and liberal advocate of womens reproductive healthcare and Nassau Tribune columnist, Alicia Wallace, by calling for the decriminalisation of abortion, reminds the writer of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger.
According to Jewish conservative writer Arthur Goldberg, Sanger openly spoke of her desire to exterminate the Negro population via abortion.
Based on this troubling statement, it would appear that racism was the motivating factor in Planned Parenthoods attempts at population control within the African American community a phenomenon which has been called institutionalised racism by pro-life activists.
This can explain why 62 percent of Planned Parenthood abortion mills are within walking distance of African American neighbourhoods.
With the availability of such facilities in the US, nearly half of all pregnancies among black women end in abortion, compared to only 16 percent among white women, according to the Centres for Disease Control.
In New York, for every 1,000 live births there are 1,180 abortions among black women. And according to the liberal think tank the Guttmacher Institute, black women are more than five times as likely as white women to have an abortion.
Small wonder American clergyman Walter Hoye opined that African Americans will be an endangered species if this disturbing trend continues.
With an astounding 62 percent of African Americans supporting legal abortion, that racial demographic will continue playing the role of ethnic minority in the US in the foreseeable future.
As with our American counterparts, the issue of ethnicity will undoubtedly be a factor in The Bahamas if abortion is ever given the green light by lawmakers. Moreover, with an average of 100 murders committed in The Bahamas each year, legalised abortion would only reinforce the perception that ours is a culture of death.
Hiding behind the subterfuges of reproductive healthcare and socioeconomics, Wallace and other pro-choice activists are attempting to undermine our traditional moral values handed down to us by the Judeo-Christian worldview that teaches us that infanticide is wrong, by lobbying for legalised abortion in The Bahamas.
As it relates to human sexuality among Bahamians, Wallace seems to be unwittingly calling for the implementation of Friedrich Nietzsches nihilism.
This dangerous and irresponsible mindset gave Americans the sex revolution, Hustler, Penthouse, AIDS, and other STDS a testament of the abject failure of the kind of sex education Wallace is clamoring for to be taught to Bahamians.
Nihilism has also led to the deconstruction of the nuclear family, most especially within the African American community, where only 37 percent of black women have ever been married.
In the event Wallace gets her wish and abortion is legalised in The Bahamas, with a population of only 400,000, the ratio of Bahamians to Haitians, be they legal or illegal, will experienced a precipitous decline.
To be sure, Haitian women will not be lining up at the abortion mills to terminate the lives of their babies. Such a phenomenon would inevitably lead to the radical altering of the Bahamian social fabric, much like what has occurred in Sweden due to its reckless, free-for-all immigration policy. It will bring about the Haitianisation of The Bahamas. As an evangelical Christian who believes in the intrinsic value of the life of unborn babies, I utterly reject Wallaces irresponsible calls for the legalisation of abortions for convenience.
