Technology allows us to appreciate Liverpool and Stokes winning in style – The Guardian

Posted: January 27, 2020 at 12:16 am

When the history comes to be written of this football season, there will be two stories that dominate. The first, barring some kind of bizarre catastrophe (which would in turn become the standout story), is Liverpools near faultless procession towards their first title in 30 years. The second less impressive, perhaps, but no less commented upon is the arrival of VAR.

Everyone has had their say on the controversial video referee and the consensus of opinion is it has ruined football. I happen to disagree, as I think it just needs to be better thought-out. Junk the nonsensical new handball law and stop absurdly marginal offside decisions (daylight between attacker and defender is a sound proposal), cut the reviews back to a strict time limit and the fuss will die down.

In any case, many of those worried about the impact of technology on the future of football are missing a more profound development: the effect of technology on footballs past. One of the most reliable cliches in sport is the one that maintains all that matters is whats in the record books. That made a lot of sense when the record books were all we possessed of the past. But even then it was never entirely true. Look in the record books and youll find West Germany won the World Cup in 1954. And to be sure, that cant be taken away from them. But its the team they beat in the final, Hungary, the world remembers and reveres. They entertained and inspired a generation.

Nowadays, theres even less reason to focus only on the black and white information of winners and losers. Footage of almost every kick of the ball has been recorded and stored for posterity. That predicament is inevitably reshaping how we think of the game and the way it is played.

As recently as the 1980s, the only full-length coverage of a match you could see on TV was pretty much the FA Cup final, the Scottish Cup final or certain internationals. Thus it was possible for a leaguewinning team to slog their way through a season with very few people, other than the most dedicated fans, really knowing how they performed in each fixture.

By contrast, Liverpools every step has been studied by millions. There is nowhere for the team to hide from the omnipresent cameras and forensic expert analysis. Each year there are more and more full-length games of football screened on TV its a rare day when there isnt a live match to watch. The effect of this blanket coverage has been to make football-watchers more knowledgeable and more demanding.

If all sport is balanced between results and romance, the pragmatists and the purists, then the dial has been nudged a degree or two towards the latters favour. For while a given clubs fans might endure their own teams dull style of play, the rest of us are under no such obligation. So if an ambitious club is seeking to draw a significant neutral following, particularly in the ever-expanding foreign market, it is simply not enough to win. They have to win in style. This is why it was so critical for Manchester City, in trying to become a global brand, to adopt a bold and attractive way of playing. And in seeking to throw off the suffocating weight of history, Liverpool have done the same.

OK, theyve also won titles Manchester City, the Premier League, and Liverpool, the Champions League last year and almost certainly the Premier League this year. If they had achieved the same success by scoring much less, with defensive, counterattacking performances, in which they narrowly got over the line, they would still be in the record books, but not nearly so firmly lodged in our imaginations.

The paradox is that while technology has brought about a blizzard of ever more detailed statistics, its significance is rendered academic by the power of actual sporting experiences. Nowhere is this more apparent than in cricket, a sport that positively fetishises stats.

By way of illustration, Ben Stokes has a Test batting average of 36.94 and a bowling average of 32.94. They are good figures, any international all-rounder would be proud of them, but they are not exactly exceptional. However, thats the only word to describe Stokes the player. Anyone who has watched him over the past year knows that, regardless of his averages. Young kids will view his exploits on YouTube, or perhaps in 3D holograms in the future, long after their numerical breakdown disappears into the dusty annals. And its hard to believe players are unaware of this wholesale capture of their abilities.

Last week it was reported Spurs players had voiced their frustration with Jos Mourinhos training methods. Mourinho is the ultimate results-based coach. If he ever receives criticism, he reminds his audience of all the titles his teams have won. His are unquestionably remarkable achievements and yet his players are apparently complaining about the focus on long balls, flick-ons and throw-ins, which they are said to have described as lower-league sessions. Its likely they wouldnt be making mutinous noises if the new tactics were paying dividends.

But there is also an awareness that such crude tactics are losing their place in the modern game. Its not that theyre necessarily ineffective though Mourinho has enjoyed increasingly limited success with them in recent years so much as that theyre unattractive. Players who have grown up being able to watch Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo each week cannot fail to be acutely conscious of the aesthetics of football. They may all want to win medals but they also want to win the admiration of their fellow professionals, to say nothing of the fans.

Its possible the highly technical advance of Jrgen Klopps Liverpool and Pep Guardiolas Manchester City and, to some extent, Mauricio Pochettinos Spurs turns out to be merely part of a cycle that will lead sooner or later back to a more fundamentalist approach.

In which case, English football will take a step backwards in time. Because history will continue to be written, but in the digital age its also there to be watched, and on the whole people like to be thrilled and inspired by what they see.

More Americans say they’re lonely blame work and technology – WDEF News 12

Posted: at 12:16 am

Americans are feeling increasingly isolated, and workplace conditions only serve to increase the problem. Thats according to a survey out this week that found three in five, or 61%, of adult U.S. workers reported being lonely, up more than five-fold from 2018.

The report by health insurer Cigna found the spike in loneliness in surveying more than 10,000 adult workers in July and August of 2019. Employees reporting good relationships with colleagues were 10 points less lonely on an 80-point scale, according to the findings.

The trends shaping how we work increasing use of technology, more telecommuting and the always-on work culture are leaving Americans more stressed, less rested, spending more time on social media and less time with friends and family, David Cordani, Cignas president and CEO, said in a statement. For the business community, it is resulting in less engagement, less productivity and lower retention levels.

How to combat loneliness, and how it differs from depression

Sixty-three percent of men reported being lonely, compared to 58% of women, according to the findings. Social media was also tied to feelings of isolation, with 72% of very heavy social media users saying they are lonely, versus 51% of light users.

Trending News

The feelings of not being connected prevailed across generations, with Generation Z, those 18 to 22 years old, scoring the highest, at about 50, on the 80-point loneliness scale, while boomers were found to be the least lonely, scoring about 43.

The findings suggest that employers have a sound business reason to address the issue, as lonely workers are more likely to miss work due to illness or stress, and 12% more of those viewed as lonely did not feel their work was up to snuff than those who view themselves asless lonely.

As part of our series looking at the regions young talent, EmergingEuropes Claudia Patricolo speaks to Vladimer Botsvadze, a Georgian who was recently named among the top five technology leaders and influencers by Thinkers360.

By the age of 29, Vladimer Botsvadze was already a globally-renowned social media influencer, a leading marketing professor, a sought-after Fortune 500 consultant and a prominent coach. Now 32, Vladimer is regarded as one of the worlds top experts on marketing and innovation. His work has influenced two million professionals, 10,000 businesses worldwide and has established a world-class reputation for always bringing innovation to the table with every project.

Im proud Thinkers360 has ranked me as a Tech Thought Leader in 2020, he says. Im honoured to be ranked alongside exceptional and globally-renowned thought leaders including Brian Solis, Marsha Collier, Evan Kirstel, Gordon Tredgold and others.

Vladimer has been recommended by the London Business School, Google, KPMG, MasterCard, AC Milan, Forrester Research, PepsiCo, Dell, Accenture, and other leading global brands. Impressive for a young man who moved from Georgia to the US at the age of just 18.After a spell in New York came Washington DC, London and Dubai.

Ive always worked hard,Ive always been disciplined and driven, he says. I demand the ultimate results from myself every single day and Im lucky to live in the best era of history when I can achieve so much through social media platforms, which I use every day for professional purposes.

He quotes James Clear, who said: Its never been a better time for self-motivated people. Anyone connected to the internet has the education of a university and the distribution power of a media company at their fingertips. Curiosity, courage and persistence are the new gatekeepers.

I became obsessed with growth in business and tech, Vladimer adds.It ismedia has been the driving force behind his global achievements. Vladimer is a top influencerwith a total of 125,000 followers from 1,142 cities and 185 countries across all his social media platforms.

With persistence and patience, Ive initiated and continued a process of constant self-education, which has distinguished me as an influencer in digital marketing, social media, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence, he explains.

Among all the social media platforms he uses, Vladimer prefers Twitter as its a joy for him to connect with the worlds best tech thought leaders, professors, journalists, analysts, politicians, entrepreneurs and more: a lot of like-minded individuals who constantly support his journey.

Vladimer quotes another guru of entrepreneurship, Henry Ford: Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

It isartificial intelligence (AI)that he believes will cause the greatest disruption, and says that organisations should focus on improving their operations, revenue, customer experience, and competitive position.

Technology will eat up everything ahead, he warns. Bookstores were first, then it was people who owned taxi services, then it was the hotel industry which was disrupted by Airbnb and it will keephappening. Speed and convenience win all the time. Voice assistants will dominate this decade, we see more and more people make decisions through devises such as Alexa. We save so much time while using voice assistants. The majority of businesses are investing in voice technology and planning to increase investments in 2020. Companies must adopt a mobile-first mentality to grow and monetise apps that account for trillions of dollars in revenue across the globe. Its imperative to deliver personalised content and create consistent engagement across a brands digital channels. Blockchain, cloud, and VR will also help the new initiatives.

Vladimer says that patience and gratitude have also played a big role in his success.

I was lucky to have met many outstanding people who shared their expertise with me and inspired me to put in the work, he says.

Gary Vaynerchuk has been a great role model, he says.

Im thankful for his daily content which provides value and encourages other people to start growing their businesses, Vladimer says. Gary is the reason why I believe in humanity, kindness, patience, teamwork, and empathy. He has positively impacted millions of people and the world is fortunate to have such an inspiring leader and entrepreneur.

Now it is Vladimers turn to offer advice and inspire young generations.

He suggests that we should constantly think of ways to stand out, and while always being driven by empathy, kindness, and gratitude, not to forget that we were born for greatness. Self-motivation allows you to produce great results, so stay outside your comfort zone. It costs nothing to create content at scale so fire on all cylinders across all social media platforms.

Go for your dreams, explore new things, choose happiness and live without limits.

The Evolution of Bitcoin’s Technology Stack – Cointelegraph

Posted: at 12:16 am

Over the last 10 years, the Bitcoin ecosystem has attracted developers to dedicate thousands of hours to improve and revamp most of its underlying codebase. Yet, Bitcoin (BTC) is largely the same. The reason for this is that its core set of consensus rules that define its monetary properties, such as its algorithmic inflation and hard-coded supply, remain unchanged.

Time and time again, factions have attempted to change these core properties, but all hostile takeovers thus far have failed. Its often a painful process but one that highlights and solidifies two of Bitcoins biggest virtues: No single party can dictate how Bitcoin evolves; and the absence of centralized control protects Bitcoins monetary properties.

The values that make Bitcoin a popular phenomenon are also those that make developing software atop Bitcoin more challenging than any other digital asset. Developers are limited to what theyre able to transform in order to not undermine its apparatus as a store of value.

Nonetheless, as well see from the examples below, innovation in Bitcoin is possible. It requires creativity and patience.

Since changing Bitcoins core layer requires a quasi-political process that may infringe upon its monetary properties, innovation is often implemented as modules. This development is similar to that of the internet's protocol suite, where layers of different protocols specialize in specific functions. Emails were handled by SMTP, files by FTP, web pages by HTTP, user addressing by IP and packet routing by TCP. Each of these protocols has evolved over time to create the experience we have today.

Spencer Bogart of Blockchain Capital has captured this development succinctly: We are now witnessing the beginning of Bitcoins own protocol suite. The inflexibility of Bitcoins core layer has birthed several additional protocols that specialize in various applications, like Lightnings BOLT standard for payment channels. Innovation is both vibrant and relatively safe, as this layered approach minimizes potential risks.

The diagram below is an attempt to map all relatively new initiatives and showcases a more complete representation of Bitcoins technology stack. It is not exhaustive and does not signal any endorsement for specific initiatives. It is, nevertheless, impressive to see that innovation being pushed on all fronts from Layer 2 technologies to emerging smart contract solutions.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the rate of adoption of the Lightning Network, Bitcoins most prominent Layer 2 technology. Critics often point to an apparent decline in the number of channels and total BTC locked when evaluating Lightnings user adoption. Yet, these metrics arent the most definitive measurement of adoption.

Related: What Is Lightning Network And How It Works

One of the most underrated virtues of the Lightning Network is its straightforward privacy properties. Since Lightning does not rely on global state reconciliation i.e., its own blockchain users can transact privately over using additional techniques and network overlays, like Tor. Activity happening within private channels is not captured by popular Lightning explorers. As such, an increase in private usage of Lightning has resulted in a decrease in what can be publicly measured, leading observers to erroneously conclude that adoption is down. While it is true that Lightning must overcome substantial usability barriers before it can enjoy wide adoption, using misleading metrics to make assertions about the current state of the network serves few.

Another recent development in the field of Layer 2 privacy was the creation of WhatSat, a private messaging system atop Lightning. This project is a modification of the Lightning Network Daemon (LND) that allows the relayers of private messages, who connect the entities communicating, to be compensated for their services via micropayments. This decentralized, censorship-and-spam-resistant chat was enabled by innovations in the LND itself, such as recent improvements in the lightning-onion, Lightnings own onion routing protocol.

There are several other projects leveraging Lightnings private micropayment capabilities for numerous applications from a Lightning-powered cloud computing VPS to an image hosting service that shares ad revenue via microtransactions. More generally, we define Layer 2 as a suite of applications that can use Bitcoins base layer as a court where exogenous events are reconciled and disputes are settled. As such, the theme of data anchoring on Bitcoins blockchain goes beyond Lightning, with companies like Microsoft pioneering a decentralized ID system atop Bitcoin.

There are projects attempting to bring back expressive smart contract functionality to Bitcoin in a safe and responsible way. This is a significant development because, starting in 2010, several of the original Bitcoin opcodes the operations that determine what Bitcoin is able to compute were removed from the protocol. This came after a series of bugs were revealed, which led Satoshi to disable some of the functionality of Script, Bitcoins programming language.

Over the years, it became clear that there are non-trivial security risks that accompany highly-expressive smart contracts. The common rule of thumb is that the more functionality is introduced to a virtual machine the collective verification mechanism that processes opcodes the more unpredictable its programs will be. More recently, however, we have seen new approaches to smart contract architecture that can minimize unpredictability and also provide vast functionality.

The devise of a new approach to Bitcoin smart contracts called Merklized Abstract Syntax Trees (MAST) has since triggered a new wave of supporting technologies for Bitcoin smart contracts. Taproot is one of the most prominent implementations of the MAST structure that enables an entire application to be expressed as a Merkle Tree, whereby each branch of the tree represents a different execution outcome.

Another interesting innovation that has recently resurfaced is a new architecture for the implementation of covenants, or spend conditions, on Bitcoin transactions. Originally proposed as a thought experiment by Greg Maxwell back in 2013, covenants are an approach to limit the way balances can be spent, even as their custody changes. Although the idea has existed for nearly six years, covenants were impractical to be implemented before the advent of Taproot. Currently, a new opcode called OP_CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY formerly known as OP_SECURETHEBAG is leveraging this new technology to potentially enable covenants to be safely implemented in Bitcoin.

At first glance, covenants are incredibly useful in the context of lending and perhaps Bitcoin-based derivatives as they enable the creation of policies, like clawbacks, to be implemented on specific BTC balances. But their potential impact on the usability of Bitcoin goes vastly beyond lending. Covenants can allow for the implementation of things like Bitcoin Vaults, which, in the context of custody, provide the equivalent of a second private key that allows someone that has been hacked to freeze stolen funds.

In essence, Schnorr signatures are the technological primitive that make all of these new approaches to smart contracts possible. And there are even edgier techniques being currently theorized, such as Scriptless Scripts, which could enable fully private and scalable Bitcoin smart contracts to be represented as digital signatures as opposed to opcodes. These new approaches may enable novel smart contract applications to be built atop Bitcoin.

There have also been some interesting developments in mining protocols, especially those used by mining pool constituents. Even though the issue of centralization in Bitcoin mining is often wildly exaggerated, it is true that there are power structures retained by mining pool operators that can be further decentralized.

Namely, pool operators can decide what transactions will be mined by all pool constituents, which grants them considerable power. Over time, some operators have abused this power by censoring transactions, mining empty blocks and reallocating hashing without the authorization of constituents.

Changes to mining protocols have aimed to subvert the control that mining pool operators can have on deciding what transactions are mined. One of the most substantial changes coming to Bitcoin mining is the second version of Stratum, the most popular protocol used in mining pools. Stratum V2 is a complete overhaul that implements BetterHash, a secondary protocol that enables mining pool constituents to decide the composition of the block they will mine not the other way around.

Another development that should contribute to more stability is reignited interest in hash rates and difficulty derivatives. These can be particularly useful for mining operations that wish to hedge against hash rate fluctuations and difficulty readjustments.

Contrary to some arguments out there, there are a host of emerging protocols that can bring optional privacy into Bitcoin. That being said, it is likely that privacy in Bitcoin will continue to be more of an art than a science for years to come.

More generally, the biggest impediment to private transactions across digital assets is that most solutions are half-baked. Privacy assets that focus on transaction-graph privacy often neglect network-level privacy, and vice versa. Both vectors suffer from a lack of maturity and usage, which makes transactions easier to de-shield via statistical traceability analysis at either the peer-to-peer (P2P) network layer or the blockchain layer.

Thankfully, there are several projects that are pushing boundaries on both fronts.

When it comes to transaction-graph privacy, solutions like P2EP and CheckTemplateVerify are interesting because privacy becomes a by-product of efficiency. As these are novel additions to CoinJoin, such solutions can increase the adoption of private transactions by users who are solely motivated by lower transaction fees. Under CoinJoin, their privacy guarantees are still suboptimal, but unshielded sent amounts can be beneficial, as they preserve the auditability of Bitcoins supply.

If lower transaction fees become a motivator and lead to an increase in Bitcoins anonymity set the percentage of UTXOs that are CoinJoin outputs de-anonymization via statistical analysis will be even more subjective than it already is.

There has also been considerable progress in the privacy of P2P communications, with protocols like Dandelion being tested across crypto networks. Another notable development is Erlay, an alternative transaction relay protocol that increases the efficiency of private communications and reduces the overhead of running a node. Erlay is an important improvement since its efficiency gains enable more users to more easily complete IBD and continuously validate the chain, especially in countries where ISPs impose caps on bandwidth.

These examples are only a handful of initiatives in play to transform the Bitcoin framework. Bitcoin, in its totality, is a constantly evolving suite of protocols.

While evolution within a relatively strict set of rules and values can be challenging for developers, the layered approach that weve seen unfold is what makes gradual, effective change possible. Minimizing politicism within Bitcoin and protecting its fundamental monetary properties are necessary parts of the process. Developers are learning how to work within these bounds in a meaningful fashion.

MCU: 10 Storylines Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Can Have – Screen Rant

Posted: at 12:15 am

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one of the most widely anticipated movies in the future of the MCU, as it looks set to provide us with multiple universes that we havent seen before. At present, theres only a slight indication of what the plot of the film might be.

RELATED:Doctor Strange 2: 5 Things It Needs To Improve From The First One (& 5 It Should Keep The Same)

Based on what weve heard so far, weve compiled a list of scenarios that this movie could have. These are generally speculations on our part, but dont be surprised if a few of these angles do end up being in the movie. The following scenarios arent exclusive to themselves, and can overlap with any of these 10 storylines that the film can have.

This is the most obvious angle to choose, seeing as the stinger for Doctor Strange had Mordo take the turn toward the dark side by claiming there were too many sorcerers. We should be in to see him make good on his plan to eliminate the number of people who practice magic.

In order to make this story is a personal one, the movie could have Stephen and Mordo hark back to the times when the former had been training to become a sorcerer, thereby adding a level of familiarity to their conflict as Stephen would be on the move to stop Mordos maniacal ways.

Weve previously looked into scenarios for future Marvel movies, one of which involves a storyline that comic book fans will see most probable. In case you dont know, Nightmare happens to be one of Doctor Stranges arch-nemeses.

The storyline we envision for Nightmare as the main baddie has to do with Doctor Strange realizing that hes been living in Nightmares Dream Dimension for a while, and has to figure out a way to escape by using the Multiverse. This would bring in the horror aspect that the MCU is looking to inject within this film as Doctor Strange would see his worst nightmares come to life.

One of the things that we know for certain is that Scarlet Witch will be appearing in this film as well, thereby bringing two of the most powerful magic-based heroes together. Of course, Scarlet Witch is far from a master at her craft, with her use of abilities only being raw talent.

Here would be Doctor Stranges role coming into play as the Master Sorcerer could fill in the part of being Scarlet Witchs mentor and teach her what true magic looks like. This can coincide with Mordos plan to eradicate the sorcerers, with Scarlet Witch being one of his targets.

Its too much of a plothole, at present, for the Time Stones absence to go ignored. After all, the Ancient One had made a big deal out of this stone remaining with the sorcerers for the protection of humanity. For this reason, we might be in for a new Time Stone to be made.

RELATED:Doctor Strange and Wong's 10 Most Memorable Moments in the MCU

Scarlet Witch can be brought in to complete this task, seeing as she was the only one said to be able to destroy an Infinity Stone - she might be able to do the reverse. The point of the multiverses here could be for Doctor Strange to find the exact way how to craft a new Infinity Stone.

Nobody thinks of a storyline to do with multiverses without also thinking of characters encountering different versions of themselves. Its the best part about having different universes colliding, and the multiverse in the MCU can bring in another Doctor Strange.

The twist here would be that this alternate Doctor Strange isnt exactly clear cut as the one we know, with there being a conflict in ideals between the MCU Doctor Strange and the one he encounters in the multiverse of madness. Their meeting could come about by having the alternate Doctor Strange warn the MCU one about Mordos threat.

We cant simply assume that Doctor Strange will know how to take down Mordo, Nightmare, or any other villain that hell encounter, which means hell need the guidance of the Ancient One once more. We saw in Avengers: Endgame how the Hulk encountered her in the past, and something similar can be seen here.

It can be explained away that the multiverse in the MCU entails different versions of the past, which would make Doctor Stranges mission one where he travels back in time to find the Ancient One and seek her knowledge in defeating his foes, or perhaps bring her to the future with him.

So far, WandaVision is being promoted as the first sitcom in the MCU, with the series carrying a highly comedic tone. Of course, having Vision be alive and for him and Scarlet Witch to be living an idyllic 1950s life sounds too out there to be true.

A great twist can be done by having Doctor Strange arrive to break this bubble and reveal to Wanda that shes also trapped in Nightmares DreamDimension as him. This can make Multiverse of Madness an escape story where Stephen and Wanda look to go back to the real world, the clue to which lies in Wandas dream.

One of our great hopes with Doctor Strange is to have him eventually lead the newest version of the Avengers, and this film can begin proceedings in this regard. With a lot of the sorcerers fractured because of the Time Stones loss and Thanos attacks, now could be the time for Doctor Strange to step up.

RELATED:Doctor Strange: 10 Fan Theories About Scarlet Witch's Role In The Multiverse Of Madness

To this end, the film can have the plot concern Doctor Stranges visit to different universes in order to locate the perfect team that he has to put together. It would be a great way to show multiple Avengers, all the while having many established characters cameo in this movie.

The whole Ive come to bargain sequence took a life of its own in popularity, and we think its worth another visit to Dormammu, this time to see Doctor Strange encountering him without the Time Stone. The film can see Strange trying to come up with a win without his most prized weapon.

Its hard to imagine Dormammu keeping his word if he finds out the Time Stone doesnt exist anymore, so the plot could have Dormammu appear once more by having Mordo summon him as part of his grand act of eliminating all sorcerers.

There are currently three sanctums that we know of in New York, Hong Kong, and London. Doctor Strange and Wong operate within the New York one, with the other two only seen fleetingly.

This can change in Multiverse of Madness as we can have Doctor Strange realize due to Mordos actions that the sanctums are better off united, paving the way for him to become the main leader of the Mystic Arts. This can be the conclusion of a story that predominantly has him contending withan unrest in the other sanctums, with something of a civil war situation happening.

What Is Going on With the Arrowverse’s Multiverse? | CBR – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Posted: at 12:15 am

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The CWs Crisis on Infinite Earths, streaming now.

After resetting things with Crisis on Infinite Earths, the characters who remember the originaluniverse are going to have some adjusting to do. The biggest change is that the heroes of the Arrowverse all reside on Earth-Prime now, rather than being scattered across different realities. Its a massive alteration to the status quo that the individual series will be dealing with for the foreseeable future.

However, the merging of Earths has led the heroes to the wrong conclusion. The most recent episodes of Batwoman and Supergirlsee the characters saying the multiverse no longer exists. Fans know thats not the case, however, given the montage at the end of Part 5 of Crisisrevealing the different realities that houseStargirl, Titans, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol and Brandon Routh's Superman. So, what's actually going on with the Arrowverse's multiverse?

RELATED:Crisis Just Gave Us The Most Diabolical Live-Action Lex Luthor

Clearly, the heroes dont know what the audience does. Its an easy mistake to make given the entire multiverse was destroyed by the anti-matter wave the Anti-Monitor unleashed. When the heroes wokeup on a new Earth that clearly merged at least three separate realities, it's easy for them to think that they're the sole survivors.Oliver wasnt exactly clear about what he was doing when he helped the Paragons recreate reality, and he may not have known that they werecreating an entirely new multiverse.

Sinceeveryone believes there's one Earth, it's unlikely that anyone will venture out in search of other realities.Breaching to other Earths was getting to be almost routine in the last couple of seasons ofThe Flash, so its not that they cant go and look. With the big reset, though, theyve lost a lot of their reason to go reality skipping.Theresclearly a whole new mess of problemson Earth-Prime to deal with, so even if they knew the multiverse was out there, they might not be in a big hurry to explore it.

RELATED:Crisis On Infinite Earths May Have Fixed The DCEU's Biggest Problem

But if there's one show that could fix this mess, itll be The Flash. There are a lot of characters from other Earths that made relatively frequent appearances on the Grant Gustin-led show. At some point, Team Flash is going to go looking for Earth-3 Jay Garrick or Jesse Quick and Harry Wells from Earth-2. Barry Allen was a Paragon and heard about the destruction of Earth-2, so he at least should remember them and everyone else.

Of course, the powers that be at The CW wouldn'tinclude those shots of the newmultiverse in "Crisis" if they werent planning on using it in some way eventually. The immediate future of most of these shows is going to be exploring the new status quo, and the multiverse is part of that new order. If it does get addressed, though, expect it to be finding old friends from across the old multiverse. While it would be exciting to see Titans come to Earth-Prime Gotham City or the insanity of Doom Patrol crossing over with Legends of Tomorrow, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon.

RELATED:Crisis Concludes With The Arrowverses Biggest Status Quo Change Ever

For now, it looks like the multiverse is going to be in the background of the Arrowverse. While the heroes thinking that its gone is sure to be addressed down the line, the focus is on Earth-Prime for the time being. Theres more than enough to keep everyone busy in their new home, rather than jumping back into the multiverse right away.

"Crisis on Infinite Earths," the five-show Arrowverse crossover, is now available on The CW's streaming service in its entirety.

Rumour: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to introduce Miss America and Brother Voodoo – Flickering Myth

Posted: at 12:15 am

Earlier this month, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige suggested that wed be seeing some new characters debuting in next years Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now if rumours from The Illuminerdi are correct, we may know of two MCU newcomers set to feature in the sequel.

According to the site, the Doctor Strange sequel will feature the fan favourite America Chavez, a.k.a. Miss America, along with Jericho Drumm, better known as the sorcerer Brother Voodoo. Marvel is said to be actively casting both roles, searching for a teenage Hispanic female and a male of Caribbean/Haitian descent for supporting leads.

The inclusion of Brother Voodoo wouldnt be too surprising given his association with Doctor Strange in the comic book source material (he even served as the Sorcerer Supreme for a time, under the name Doctor Voodoo).

America Chavez on the other hand has no ties to Doctor Strange, although the Young Avenger does hail from the Utopian Parallel, an alternate dimension of of time and space, and ventures through the various dimensions of the Multiverse in an effort to prove herself a hero. So, shes certainly someone Doctor Strange could encounter as he ventures through the Multiverse of Madness

He-Man & the Masters of the Multiverse #3: Livin’ On a Prayer – Comic Watch

I could honestly spend this whole review talking about the last page, but I wont. Anyway, in this issue, author Tim Seeley gives the fans something I dont think they knew they wanted. But now that its out, its gonna be really hard to put the genie back in the bottle, if you will. Anti He-Man pretty much has 90% of the Powers of Grayskull, and hes going around the multiverse gathering more powers until he has it all. Yes, a few He-Men stand in his way, but this issue we find that Skeletor also stands in his way. Theres been a theme in comics for a while now that has villains coming out of nowhere and destroying the headlining hero. Remember when Doomsday killed Superman? Shouldnt it have been Lex Luthor that killed him? I mean, Luthors been calculating plans to do that very thing his whole life!! And when Bane broke Batmans back? His whole rogues gallery had to be really ticked off when some guy nobodys ever heard of just goes and destroys the hero theyve been trying to kill/capture/unmask for decades.

Anyway, its a nice touch that Seeley puts Skelator into the book and makes him powerful enough to pose a credible threat to the team of He-Men that are traveling across the multiverse. Not only that, he uses the worst incarnation of Skeletor thats ever existed. Disco Skelator was infamously hated by Masters of the Universe fans everywhere and of every age. Seeley does a great job of making the most hated toy ever into the only chance of saving the multiverse. I wont give away what happens, but the issue is packed with Skelator rethinking what hes been doing with his life and you might be surprised at the conclusion that he comes to.

Artists Tom Derenick and Dan Fraga do an amazing job this issue. They hit a grand slam with every panel. The versions of the franchise theyre using couldnt be further apart from one another, yet again, they manage to portray them on the page as if theyre actually real characters from different places living in the same shared planet. The difference between some of the characters is immense, yet Derenick & Fraga smash them together with ease. Another beautiful book to look at.

In many contemporary science fiction stories, as well as in some speculative scientific studies, the idea of alternative realities has been raised. These alternative realities are said to be similar to our own. They contain many of the same people, places and things in them. The difference lies in the choices which are made by the people in each reality. Different choices lead to the creation of different histories, and the more these choices differ, the more the different realities branch out, like a tree. Likewise, when talking about these alternative realities, each a particular universe, there is also the notion that these universes are all interconnected, that they form one great whole which is called the multiverse.

There is some semblance to various notions of the Kabbalah, where the Torah itself is said to have multiple interpretations, contradictory interpretations, which are all valid, depending upon which are actualized. If properly interpreted, the Torah can be used to predict a variety of possible futures, each which are valid, even if only one of them is actually realized. What ties them together is the Torah. And this is because the Torah itself is an expression and representation of all the meanings associated with the names of God.

The notion of the multiverse is highly controversial. Not everyone agrees with it, indeed, many scientists think it is entirely false. But this is because of its speculative nature. Some scientists are more concrete in their speculations, wanting more evidence than is usually offered by those who promote the notion of the multiverse. Nonetheless, there are elements coming out of scientific research (especially from those involved with quantum mechanics, where the notion of every quantum possibility is realized in some universe within the multiverse), which provide evidence in favor of the multiverse being real, especially when that evidence is examined and contemplated upon by someone who is willing to engage speculation.

Now, there are several questions which could be asked about the multiverse theory. From a Christian perspective, two of them are: what, exactly, are the theological ramifications of the multiverse theory, and can Christians hold to some version of a multiverse theory? As the topic of the multiverse is new, as the scientific research and study of the notion is relatively new, as there are many variations of the multiverse theory which can be brought up, it is difficult, if not impossible, at this stage to give definitive answers to these questions. What can be done is to speculate possible answers, leaving it open for more definitive responses to be given as the multiverse theory is explored more in scientific and in theological circles.

As there are a variety of ways people can understand the multiverse, the theological and philosophical ramifications for a multiverse will depend upon the qualities one attributes to the multiverse. What is also important for us is to explain what we mean by the term universe. If the universe is defined as all that exists, then a universe and a multiverse would be the same thing, but if a universe is seen as all that exists within a particular space-time continuum, allowing for a variety of space-time continuums to exist, then it is possible to call each alternative reality, with its own space-time continuum, a universe, and to say the multiverse is the holistic unity of all such universes. Each space-time continuum, each universe, can be said to be infinite in regards its own space while finding itself bounded and contained by the multiverse, similar to the way a line is infinite but finds itself contained within a plane. This is why even if a particular space-time continuum exists within an infinite universe, this would not mean that such a universe could not exist within a multiverse.

A universe within the multiverse theory is thus an integrated space-time continuum, with boundaries or limits, and beyond those boundaries then can be found other space-time continuums, other universes. Just as it is possible for a believer to believe God created multiple words full of intelligent life, God likewise can create multiple universes. He can integrate them, if he likes, or have them relatively independent (they would still be united together as one in the sense that they all share the fact that they are created by the same source, God). This, at least, should be something that Christians can agree. They do not have to assert that God actually created a multiverse, but that it is possible for him to do so if he chose to do so. If they deny this possibility, it suffers from the same errors associated with tienne Tempiers condemnation in 1277 of those scholastics who said God could only make one world.

Perhaps the most troubling idea of a multiverse is the one in which every quantum possibility will be actualized in its own particular universe This is because it seems to turn creation, and the freedom given to creation, as well as the freedom of God himself, inside-out. Why? Because it suggests that every possible reality, every possible contingent existence must exist, which would mean, contingency would also be necessity. But the notion of possibility relies upon the qualification that what is possible is possible not to be, but if every possibility exists, then it suggests that there really is no possibility which also remains unactualized. Freedom, however, gives those with such freedom the ability to engage possibility, to choose what to actualize and what not to actualize. This freedom would be lost to God because he would have to generate every potential universe in order to actualize all the possibilities of existence. God, then, would not be free. Likewise, free will can then be ultimately denied within creation itself, since all possible actions, all possible willed events would be actualized. For this reason, such a multiverse theory must be rejected. But this does not remove the possibility of a multiverse, and the establishment of many particular universes, based upon particular points in time and various different actions which could take place at those points in time that God uses to create a variety of realities. Since this other notion does not necessitate the realization of all potential universes, but rather the generation of various particular ones, based on Gods own decision of when to create such alternative realities, Gods freedom would not have to be denied, and so, along such lines of reasoning, its possibility remains acceptable.

Both possibilities hold some merit as well as some concern.

If we were to answer that there will be the creation of a plurality of persons after particular events spawn the creation of alternative realities, is this because those people were already together as one before the creation of those realities, or because a soul can somehow be divided up and create many other souls from itself? Both answers offer challenges. The first would raise the question of who and what is in charge when multiple souls work together as one, and whether or not all the souls share in the merits and demerits of their combined actions, or only those in charge would do so. The second answer, however, would raise questions about the nature of the soul itself, but on the other hand, would explain that the creation of alternative realities might be something given to the soul and is established when a soul divides itself into two or more (whether or not it knows it is doing so). In either case, the eschatological fate of every particular soul will depend upon its state at the end of its temporal existence, and so each soul can easily be judged without affecting the results of other souls.

The possibility that we are persons who exist in many different universal realities at once troubles us, and seems to be contradicted by the fact, that we are not aware of such other universes and other existences within our lives. Nonetheless, as we have come to recognize various aspects of our psyche remain outside of our own conscious awareness, this does not mean it is impossible for us to have different parts of ourselves living and acting unaware of what other parts of us do. Yet, this is not to say we would be totally unaware of such alternative existences being lived out by our souls. Perhaps the feeling of dj vu could be explained by the fact that in some other reality, we lived through a similar sequence of events, and our unconscious connection to that other reality is manifesting itself to us. Theologically, we would have to deal with the soteriological ramifications of tis. What would salvation entail for those who exist and live out in a variety of universes at one time? Would it be the salvation of only particular parts of ourselves, that is, those parts of us who do what needs to be saved in their particular aspects of their meta-life? Or would every aspect of us, even those which do not cooperate with grace but resist it, be saved because of those parts of us which open up to salvation are tied together in one soul with such a meta-existence? And yet, not everything would be a challenge. Such a multiversal existence would help give hope that all will be saved, because it would suggest that even if we do not see someone act in accordance to salvation in a particular form of existence, this is not to say they do so in all forms of existence. Perhaps, even, this could be the cause for the development of many universes by God, so that everyone can find some particular universe in which they come to God and open themselves up to him to be saved. Nonetheless, it would seem, in an eschatology which accepts the existence of a variety of universes in which we live, our whole self would be consciously reintegrated, so that we would be aware of all we have done in all realities, or some if only some aspects of us are saved, allowing our true character to form as a result that combination instead of what is revealed in only one reality; what is lacking in one reality could be fulfilled in another, so that in that reintegration, we will find satisfaction not only in our eternal life, but in our temporal existence as well.

Christians can hold to some form of multiverse theory, so long as they continue to affirm basic Christian theological doctrines. What is important is the realization of freedom, to make such a multiverse theory does not override freedom, either in God, or in his creatures. Likewise, it is important to recognize, if some form of multiverse theory is true, it raises questions concerning who we are, questions which we might not be able to answer and will not know the answer until we experience eternal existence, when we transcend temporality and so will know and realize what is contained in all forms of temporality.

Ariana Grande made her return to the GRAMMYs stage during the 62nd Annual ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 26. With her chill-inducing vocals on prominent display, the powerhouse didnt miss a beat during her three-song medley.

Grande started off her performance with an orchestra-heavy take on her song "Imagine." After getting back to her Broadway roots with a string-assisted rendition of "The Sound Of Music"'s "My Favorite Things,"Grandeclad in a sheer pink teddytook the audience to a 2020 version of the Von Trapp Familys bedroom to sing, dance and flex along to the Rodgers and Hammerstein-interpolated "7 Rings."

The petite pop star finished her highly-hyped performance with "Thank U, Next,"which is the title track of her GRAMMY-nominated album. The song serves as a classy kiss-off to some of her high-profile romantic relationships.

Grande is up for five nominations tonight including the coveted Album Of The Year honor for her chart-topping project.
