Forty-seven years after Ohio EPA was founded, progress is tangible, fishable and breathable – cleveland.com

Posted: October 24, 2019 at 11:48 am

I started working for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in 1974. Very soon, I discovered the depth of the environmental and political challenges that were facing the agency; Ohio waters and air were in bad shape. Yet, Gov. James Rhodes, who was running for re-election that year, claimed that the Ohio EPA was exceeding its authority and he made putting Ohio EPA under control a major theme of his campaign.

As we celebrate the 47th anniversary of the creation of the Ohio EPA -- created on Oct. 23, 1972 -- our air is safe to breathe most the time. Not all our streams and lakes are fishable and swimmable, but at least they are not flammable. The majority of our citizens feel that protecting our environment is an important goal and they deplore politicians who blame environmental protection for all our ills.

Despite this progress, Ohio still has great environmental challenges ahead. However, l dont have any doubt in my mind that Ohio EPA and its staff will continue to overcome technical and political obstacles that may arise, as they always did. Having these challenges should not stop us from celebrating the progress we have achieved and acknowledging the unsung heroes who dedicated their careers to protecting the health and welfare of the people of Ohio.

George A. Elmaraghy,

George A. Elmaraghy served as chief of the surface water division of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency among a number of other state government positions.

Does the Lebanese Government Have the Courage to Make the Right Decisions? – International Policy Digest

Posted: at 11:47 am

On my visit to Lebanon several weeks before the current demonstrations began, two Lebanese leaders, one a minister and the other a parliamentarian, described the mood of the Lebanese people and noted the lack of courage by Lebanese government officials, one admitting, We do not have the courage to address our problems.

That comment now appears prescient as Lebanons crisis is about more than Syrian refugees, who with existing Palestinian refugees and other immigrants, make up at least one-third of the population. This presence adds to the existing pressure on government services, unemployment and underemployment, infrastructure overload, environmental damage, and increased crime. And the government has no national strategy to effectively addresses these concerns.

Nearly daily, Israel threatens to intervene militarily in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah. Israeli jets and drones conduct illegal overflights of Lebanon, while Hezbollah threatens to wreak havoc inside Israel. One miscalculation by either side could lead to a catastrophic war. One almost occurred a month ago when Israel sent drones to the Hezbollah stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut; another in December, when Israel first discovered tunnels dug by Hezbollah from Lebanon into Israel.

However, the Israeli military threat and the refugee crisis are not taking up most of the attention of the Lebanese these days. Its their economy and people from all over the country and across all sectarian groups are demonstrating in the streets.

They have many reasons to demonstrate. Economic growth could be in negative territory in 2019; bond agencies have rated Lebanese bonds as deep junk; unemployment and poverty are on the rise; and the government has little in the way of resources and management to address the countrys socio-economic problems. The Central Bank of Lebanon has enacted monetary policies to maintain the value of the Lebanese pound to prevent economic collapse, rampant inflation, and wage instability. But this cannot last without sound fiscal measures taken by the government. Adding to these pressures are the decrease of remittances and deposits from the Lebanese diaspora and the decline in significant deposits and foreign direct investment from Gulf countries, principally the UAE and Saudi Arabia, who have blocked their investments to Lebanon due to the Iranian influence on Hezbollah. In addition, the Syrian war has also cut off Lebanon from its only overland trade routes.

The U.S. has made its position clear by taking on Hezbollah by taking tough steps to weaken Hezbollah and Iran, sanctioning individuals and two banks in Lebanon, most recently, Jammal Trust. This affected 85,000 mostly innocent Shiite depositors who face challenges in retrieving and transferring their accounts. This is perceived by some as the U.S. targeting Lebanons Shiite community. The banking sector makes up 14% of the GDP of the country, and protecting this industry is a must if Lebanon is to recover.

There is a new U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs and there will soon be a new U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon. These changes lead Lebanese officials to wonder if ongoing U.S. support will continue, especially regarding its negotiations on the Lebanon-Israel land and maritime borders, putting into question the future potential of natural gas development.

Its the perfect storm, said one Lebanese official. Another remarked, The U.S. wants us to be more aggressive with Hezbollah and in our economic policies. We have little room to maneuver, adding, We need breathing spaceThis is not our problem alone. It is a problem involving outside actors much larger than Lebanon: Syria, Russia, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United States. They have as much an effect on Lebanon as Lebanons internal actors.

As the U.S. has reduced its involvement in the Middle East, Russia sees an opportunity to fill the void and exert leadership. Russia claims to be a more dependable alternative, promising Lebanon and its neighbors increased trade, military equipment, and conflict mediation regarding Lebanons refugee repatriation. So far, Russia has shown little action and questionable capability, but this propaganda works at a time of U.S. regional retreat.

Despite Lebanons fears of abandonment, and in response to the legitimate concerns of the demonstrators, the U.S. can be helpful in many ways. For example, emphasizing its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and stability of Lebanon, providing significant funding in direct military and foreign assistance, and continuing visits by senior diplomatic and military officials.

Time is running out however for the Lebanese government to show the courage to make the tough decisions necessary to right its economy. Thousands of Lebanese are demonstrating in the streets, expressing their frustration with a government that is failing to take decisive action on the economy.

The government has the power to make the needed changes, address its economic woes, and take control of its destiny. It has been offered $11 billion in soft loans and grants by international donors to rebuild infrastructure, kick-start the economy, and privatize government-run entities.

The international community however expects Lebanon to reduce its budget and public workforce, create transparent oversight mechanisms, and institute anti-corruption policies that will allow this beautiful country to reclaim its historic role as an economic model in the Middle East. The demonstrators are showing their concern and commitment to a more free, open, transparent, and inclusive Lebanonwill the politicians take up the challenge? All it takes is a little courage.

Raising the country’s wellness index – Ceylon Daily News

Posted: at 11:46 am

This article is a continuation of Sri Lankas rise to healthy nationhood published in the Daily News yesterday.

Elimination of HIV/AIDS by 2030

HIV/AIDS is a major global public health problem having claimed over 34 million lives so far. At present, around 36.7 million people globally are affected with HIV/AIDS. Today, Sri Lanka is named as a low prevalence country for HIV/AIDS.

The challenges facing HIV/AIDS in Sri Lanka

1.) Bringing down the rate of low prevalence to a point of near elimination

2.) Ensure all patients with HIV/AIDS have the right to universal healthcare

3.)Ensure all patients with HIV/AIDS lead a normal life in the community without being marginalised or discriminated by the local community

Magnitude of HIV/AIDSproblem in SL:

(Source: National STD/AIDS Control Programme, December 2017)

Target of HIV/AIDSprogramme in SL:

To reduce the prevalence from 0.01 percent to the overall goal of zero percent - target to be achieved by 2030

The fast track initiative programme, the 90-90-90 needs to identify the following.

1.) Diagnose 90 percent of population infected with HIV.

2.) Treat 90 percent diagnosed with anti viral treatment.

3.) Ensure undetectable HIV in 90 percent of patients is treated with anti viral drugs.

Prevention of HIV/AIDS

1.) Sexual education of young people is mandatory regarding sexual health, sexual responsibility and the need to practice safe sex with the use of condoms.

2.) Advising youth to engage in sexual activity with one trustworthy partner only.

3.) Screening of all pregnant mothers for HIV/AIDS.

4.) Among drug addicts - avoidance of sharing needles for injecting drugs.

5.) Advise suspected cases of HIV/AIDS to avail themselves of freely accessible STD clinics in the government sector and confirm the HIV status confidentially at no cost.

6.) Protection of the baby during pregnancy from HIV infected mothers.

REDUCING ROAD ACCIDENTS

The stark reality of road traffic accidents (RTA) in 2018 was that approximately 3,000 Sri Lankans died on roads. On average, one death occurred every three hours or eight deaths occurred daily. The government spends on each death, including basic treatment, ICU care, investigations, legal workout and post-mortem, approximately Rs. one million per victim.

The WHOs ambitious goal is to reduce the deaths from RTA by 50 percent by 2030. To ensure this, the government will have to enforce strict laws and implement them without any exception via the National Road Safety Council to ensure the countrys roads are safe for its citizens.

Analysis of fatal road traffic accidents in 2016 revealed the following information.

Total number of road traffic deaths - 2961.

This comprised 1,157 motorcyclists, 877 pedestrians, 720 motorists and 244 cyclists. These figures confirm that roads in Sri Lanka pose a serious hazard.

Consequences of road accidents

Deaths from road traffic accidents often involve the breadwinners of families at the peak of their lives. These deaths also invariably spell economic disaster for the families as all financial resources are utilised for treatment of these victims. Invariably these victims who survive from road traffic accidents are left with severe degrees of disability ranging from partial to total paralysis, totally dependent in vegetative states.

Prevention of roadtraffic accidents

1.) Primary prevention - Preventing road traffic accidents before it occurs. This includes education of the public, engineering and enforcement.

2.) Secondary prevention - management of injuries

3.) Tertiary prevention - disability limitation and rehabilitation

The way forward

All road users should act with civic responsibility and obey road rules at all times. They should not drink and drive or drive when they are tired and sleepy. The insurance premium should be increased for reckless driving. Other important measures are withdrawal of licence for six months for drunk driving and implementation of strict fines on dangerous driving without any exceptions.

The Sri Lanka Medical Association(SLMA) has already initiated a programme to increase public awareness of road traffic accidents and their consequences.

KEEPING SRI LANKA MALARIA FREE

Sri Lanka was certified malaria-free on September 5, 2016. This was exactly four years after the last endogenous case of malaria was detected in a soldier at a Sri Lanka Army camp in Mullaitivu. This was exactly 100 years after the British set up the first-ever malaria field station in Kurunegala in 1912. During this period, Sri Lanka was plagued by a devastating epidemic of malaria in 1935. This epidemic affected about 80 percent of the total population of Sri Lanka, which was five million at that time. The maternal mortality during the epidemic was 5,000 per 100,000 live births and the infant mortality rate was 458 per 1,000 live births.

Sri Lanka was free of malaria temporarily in 1963. However, unremitting vigilance was not maintained and malaria re-emerged in the late 60s. Minor epidemics of malaria occurred from 1970 to 1974 and from 1986 to 1988. During this period, 1986 to 1988, malaria was the leading cause of admission of patients to the government hospitals in Sri Lanka. This was the period that I worked at the Polonnaruwa Base Hospital where one-third of all admissions to the medical and paediatric wards comprised patients sick with malaria.

Patterns of malariaepidemics in SL

Elimination of Malaria

With the decline in cases to 124 in 2001 with global funds, the task of elimination of malaria began. This was achieved through

(1.) Integrated and targeted vector control (mosquito larvae) in major irrigation channels and agricultural projects; (2.) Adult vector control by targeted spraying in high-risk areas, indoor residual spraying and the use of long-lasting insecticide sprayed bed nets; and (3.) Parasite control with mobile clinics for active and passive case detection and treatment of patients at all levels.

Despite elimination of malaria in Sri Lanka, we remain receptive and vulnerable to reintroduction of malaria. Receptivity to malaria results from

(1.) The ecosystems of the country favouring a high prevalence of malaria mosquitoes due to suitable temperature and humidity; (2.) Presence of vectors in most parts of the country in irrigation projects, streams, quarry pits and water pools; and (3.) Real danger of a new vector Anopheles stephensi in the Northern Province imported from India. This vector would cause major epidemic of urban malaria if it reaches the Western Province.

Sri Lanka is vulnerable to the reintroduction of malaria due to the tremendous increase in the migrant population, with the possibility of importing the malaria parasite to Sri Lanka from other endemic countries and delay in the detection and treating these imported malaria cases.

These high-risk groups include

(1.) Sri Lankan gem traders travelling to Madagascar and Mozambique; (2.) Businessmen who travel to Asia and Africa; (3.) Pilgrims travelling to India; (4.) Sri Lankan security forces in foreign missions; (5.) Migrant workers, refugees and asylum seekers; and (6.) Tourists from malaria-endemic areas and Sri Lankans on leisure trips to South Africa.

There have been no indigenous cases of malaria since August 2012, confirming zero local transmission since then.

In 2018, there were 47 imported cases and one introduced case in a Sri Lankan who contracted malaria from an Indian worker in Moneragala.

An important message to doctors:

(1.) Always obtain a travel history of patients who present with fever

(2.) Perform blood tests repeatedly to confirm a diagnosis of malaria.

(3.) Remember thrombocytopenia is common not only in dengue but in malaria as well.

(4.) Always follow the national guidelines during treatment.

(5.) Inform all cases of malaria to the hotline, 011 7 626 626.

Take home message to patients:

If you develop fever after visiting a malaria-endemic area, please remind your doctor that it could be malaria.

FACING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHALLENGES OF AGEING POPULATION

Sri Lanka has one of the fastest ageing populations in the world with 19 percent of population belonging to the elderly population group by 2030. ( See Table 1)

With the decrease in the birth rate and rising of the expectation of life and the geriatric population will need to shift the governments healthcare allocation funds from the pediatric to the geriatric age groups. Increase in the dependency ratio and the shrinking of the working population will consequently cause a tremendous burden on the government.

Mitigating adverse effectsof rising geriatric population

1.) Increase the retirement age and encourage older workers to remain longer in the labour force.

2.) Introduce phased out retirement schemes.

3.) Promote voluntary pro-social behaviour, craft and artistic work among the elderly.

4.) Provide support for independent living for the elderly.

5.) Adaptive transport, housing and rehabilitation.

6.) Prepare for management of age-related diseases such as NCDs, dementia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimers disease.

7.) Establishment of day care centres, psychogeriatric clinics, dementia care centres etc.

People living longer and leading productive lives is the crowning achievement of our health services. It is certainly a challenge which must be properly planned and executed. Our aim should be to add life to years and not years to life and to enter the silver age, healthy and productive.

REDUCING BURDEN OF CKDU

In the history of our nation, spanning over 2500 years, agriculture and the paddy farmer have had a special bearing on our economy. It is believed that the migration of Rajarata from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa and subsequently to Dambadeniya resulted from the devastating effects of malaria in these kingdoms. Today, the high prevalence of CKDu in the North-Central Province (NCP) has nearly crippled this agricultural heartland, causing a steady outmigration of people and is slowly but surely destroying the agricultural-based civilisation of our country.

The following data highlight the stark reality of this malady.

1.) The age-standardised prevalence of CKDu is 15 percent.

2.) A population of 500,000 is at risk in the NCP namely Medawachchiya, Padavi Sripura and Weli Oya areas

3.) Numbers severely affected with CKDu fearing death is 75,000

4.) Estimated death toll so far is 24,000

5.) Estimated daily deaths are two per day

In 2009, the following were defined as criteria for case definition of CKDu.

1.) No past history of or current treatment for diabetes, chronic hypertension, snakebite or urological disease of known aetiology or glomerulonephritis.

2.) Normal glycosylated haemoglobin (HBA1C) level is below 6.5.

3.) For blood pressure below 160 by 100 mm untreated or blood pressure below 140 by 90 mm mercury up to two hypotensive drugs used (The Health Ministry, 2019).

Main features of CKDu include an insidious onset, slowly progressive chronic interstitial nephritis which predominantly affects, poor rural male farmers in agrochemical intense form of cultivation. The heavy sun exposure in these areas leads to increased sweating. This factor, along with reduced water intake leading to dehydration further aggravate this toxic nephropathy with unique geographical distribution which appeared in Sri Lanka in the mid-1990s. CKDu has been associated strongly with the following factors.

1.) Consumption of hard water containing magnesium and calcium

2.) Spraying of glyphosate (Roundup), the most widely used herbicide in disease-endemic areas with unique metal chelating properties.

3. Use of fertilizers with heavy metals (E.g., arsenic lead, cadmium and chromium)

The above interactions result in the formation of glyphosate metal (GM) complexes. Drinking hard water with the GM complex and subsequent absorption to the circulation leads to high levels reaching the kidney. In the kidney, high concentration of ammonium, NH4 plus ions, releases the heavy metals from the GMA lattice in the proximate tubular areas. When the lattice is broken, it releases metals such as arsenic which damage the glomeruli and leads to glomerulosclerosis and subsequent collapse while arsenic, cadmium, chromium and the other heavy metals cause proximal tubular damage leading to chronic interstitial nephritis.

All these factors associated with agriculture have resulted in change of the name of CKDu to Chronic Interstitial Nephritis of Agricultural Communities (CINAC).

(Source: Int. J. Res. Public Health 2013, Page 2137. C.N. Jayasumana et al.)

Prevention of CKDu/CINAC

1.) Fast track provision of safe water to communities living in affected areas -

Provision of reverse osmosis water purifiers at community levels in common places

(e.g., markets, community centres, temples, pradeshiya sabha grounds)

2.) Provision of safe water for schoolchildren by installing water filters in schools in the affected areas.

3.) Minimise the use of agro chemicals herbicides and weedicides

4.) Avoid the use of chemical fertilizers

5.) Encourage farmers to engage in traditional methods of agriculture by using compost

6.) Population screening and surveillance for early detection of CINAC

It has now been proved beyond doubt that reverse osmosis by water purifiers is the only effective answer to prevent CKD/CINAC. Reverse osmosis removes all suspected causative elements of this malady (e.g., removes arsenic, cadmium, glyphosate, fluoride, calcium and magnesium) Reverse osmosis is therefore the only effective answer to prevent CINAC.

Browns Odell Beckham Jr. said it was his dream to be teammates with Tom Brady – The Boston Globe

Posted: at 11:45 am

Tom Brady throwing passes to Odell Beckham Jr.? It was the dream of the occasionally mercurial wide receiver.

Beckham told reporters Wednesday he heard the talk of a potential trade to New England a few years back, and he was pretty psyched about it.

Two, three years ago, there was speculation that was going on, he said. I was willing and ready to go over there at any point in time. That was always a dream of mine to play for Tom Brady.

Instead, Beckham was dealt from New York to Cleveland last offseason, ending up with Baker Mayfield and the Browns. But while Beckham took care Wednesday to say how much hes enjoyed playing with Mayfield in Cleveland, it doesnt mean his feelings toward Brady have changed. Beckham said he has a pair of goat-hair cleats he wants to present to the New England quarterback this weekend.

Tom Bradys the GOAT. I know weve done some goat cloning. ... I think theres something going on, Beckham told reporters. Hes not human to be playing the way hes still playing. Mentally prepared every single game. Decisive decisions. Knows how to manage a game. Plays offense and defense with the way that he plays. Hes just very smart. Hes the best to ever do it. I dont think anybody could really argue it. Hes just the greatest. I definitely want some of the water that hes drinking.

He also has plenty of respect for Bill Belichick -- even though the receiver said he expects to hear some barbs from the New England sideline on Sunday.

He tells me the same thing every time, Beckham said of Belichick. Hes like, I hope you enjoy today, because theres not gonna be much for you. And thats what hes told me, and thats what he does every single time. Its just tough. Hes going to coach it up, and theyre going to be ready and prepared.

With the Giants, Beckham has played one regular-season game against the Patriots, and had four catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Sundays game at Gillette Stadium begins at 4:25 p.m.

Aliens Already Invaded Earth With Tiny Probes, New Study Claims – International Business Times

Posted: at 11:45 am

A new study submitted by an astrophysicist claimed that Earth may have already been invaded by aliens using tiny self-cloning probes. According to the studys author, even though the probes are too small to be spotted, they leave behind traces that can be detected.

Astrophysicist Zaza Osmanov from the Free University of Tbilisi in Georgia claimed in a new study that a race of extraterrestrial beings is using self-replicating probes to explore the universe and its planets, including Earth.

Osmanov explained that these probes are based on the Von Neumann concept, which was theorized by mathematician John Von Neumann. By being able to clone themselves exponentially, these probes are capable of covering and observing vast regions in space.

All the results indicate that if one detects a strange object with extremely high values of luminosity increment, that might be a good sign to place the object in the list of extraterrestrial Von-Neumann probe candidates, Osmanov wrote in his paper.

We have considered the scenario when the Type-II civilization needs to invade the interstellar clouds by means of the self-reproducing robots, he continued. And it has been shown that this process will inevitably lead to the observational consequences.

Since these probes are capable of cloning their selves, the scientist noted that there may already be billions to trillions of alien probes flying in space and on Earth

Despite the huge number, these probes still remain unseen because they are too small to be spotted by the human eye. According to Osmanov, each of the probes are only about a nanometer in size, which is equivalent to a billionth of a meter.

Although these probes are almost invisible due to their size, Osmanov noted that there are still ways to detect them. According to the scientist, these probes rely on photons or light particles to sustain themselves. In turn, these probes produce small amounts of light as they travel across space. When viewed through infrared light, these light streams would appear like the traces left behind by comets.

Osmanovs study regarding the existence of self-replicating alien probes is currently available through the website ArXiv.org.

Political correctness will destroy our nation, says Ben Carson – thebl.com

Posted: at 11:44 am

Ben Carson, secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said on Tuesday that political correctness will destroy the nation.

The official was referring to the harsh criticism he received for an out-of-context comment he made at a staff meeting at homeless womens shelters in September that was allegedly offensive to the transgender community, the Western Journal explained.

The Washington Post published an article accusing Carson of referring to transsexuals as big, hairy men during the meeting.

However, a HUD official told the Post that although Carson said those words, he was referring to men who, pretending to be transgender people, were trying to gain access to federal shelters that were reserved for women.

Jennifer Wexton of Virginia urged the official to apologize to the transgender community during a House Financial Services Committee hearing on housing policy, CNN reported.

Carson clarified again on Tuesday that he did not use those words to describe transgender people, according to CNN.

I was relating a story that a womens group told me about big, hairy menwho are not transgender women, by the waycoming into your facility and having to be accepted because of the rules that were in place, Carson said.

No, added the HUD secretary, refusing to apologize for his words.

I think this whole concept of political correctnessyou can say this, you cant say that, you cant repeat what someone saidits total foolishness, and its going to destroy our nation and we need to be more mature than that, he added.

The danger for women

Currently and in the name of nondiscrimination against LGTBI individuals, male offenders, including violent offenders and sex offenders, are serving sentences in womens prisons in several Western jurisdictions, according to Quillette.

This is known as self-ID and means that their status as a man or woman is determined by their belief and what they claim and not by their actual biology.

Transgender prisoners enjoy privileges in prisons, such as the right to shower alone, to separate cells, and to request a change between male and female prisons.

Recently, the number of male prisoners who begin to perceive themselves as women and request their transfer to womens prisons is skyrocketing, leading to serious incidents that put the integrity of women prisoners at risk, according to The Telegraph.

A very symptomatic case is that of Karen White, a male rapist who was held in a womens prison in Wakefield, England, in 2017 and who in his first three months raped three women prisoners, according to Quillette.

In the UK, currently 1 in 50 male prisoners now claim to be women, according to an official prison control survey shared by The Telegraph.

IN CLOSED SESSION : What It Takes To Run – Gazette Newspapers

What does it take to run for City Council in Long Beach?

Some might tell you having a screw loose, because no one in their right mind would run for local public office.

I can say almost categorically, most of the time, that's not the case. During my time in Long Beach, we've been blessed with candidates who truly do want to help our community. Yes, I know there also have been a few who like the concept of having "power," who live for making decisions that impact other people or who have the mistaken impression that a City Council member lives a glamorous life with lots of perks and maybe even a bump in the bank account occasionally.

The one or two or three with that kind of attitude typically get brought back down to earth quickly. But those tales are for another column.

Back to what it takes to run for election.

The basics are, well, basic. This from City Clerk Monique De La Garza's website:

"A candidate must be: A U.S. citizen 18 years old on or before election day A registered voter living in the jurisdiction identified on the Nomination Paper at least 30 days prior to the end of the nomination period (Long Beach City Charter Sections 201 and 502). A candidate may not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction."

That bit about living in the jurisdiction a candidate is running from has tripped up several California and one or two Long Beach politicians over time. There's a state law that makes it illegal to live outside your district. And I can recall at least one instance in Long Beach where gerrymandering (changing, for you non-political types) City Council district boundaries took a fairly formidable opponent out of the running for the incumbent's next election.

Still, pretty simple requirements most Long Beach adults interested in being a public official can meet. The bar is so low precisely because we believe that in a real democracy, pretty much anyone should have the chance to run for public office and that's a good thing.

That's in a perfect world. There are a few more requirements to have much of a chance to win a City Council election.

Some experience in serving the public commissions, task forces, even being president of the school PTA is helpful. Support from others, particularly other Long Beach leaders, is a big plus. And there's money, or the ability to raise some. It doesn't have to be much, particularly in the less active council districts, but there are some bills filing fees, for example you have to pay.

Oh, did I mention having a spotless background? I'm not talking showing you are a convicted felon here. These days, spotless means having never taken a wrong step from college on, based on the current morality and political correctness. There's not a lot of deep background digging amongst council candidates, but if you go any farther up the political ladder

There's one last thing that's a prerequisite for becoming a City Council candidate. I call it fire in the belly. Others call it passion for a cause. It comes down to the same thing a desire to make a difference.

I saw quite a bit of that fire in the belly Monday night at a candidate forum for those running in a special election to fill the vacant First District council seat. I was one of a panel of questioners quizzing seven of the eight people who want to take now-State Senator Lena Gonzalez's place at City Hall.

I believe only one of the group has ever run for public office before. One or two have specific axes to grind, and they all have the causes near and dear to their hearts. That's as it should be. It takes that crusading feeling to light the fire in the belly.

I may be a Pollyanna, or maybe its just the faith I have in the essential goodness of people (that's pretty much the same thing), but I saw a sincere desire in each and every one of those candidates to help make Long Beach a better place to live. We might disagree on the definition of "better," but the motivation is in the right direction.

Give them the respect they deserve, and find out who's running and why. And if you live in the First District, cast a vote. It's the least you can do.

EDITORIAL: Jeff Dunham’s comedy act is more offensive than what should be accepted – The Daily Collegian Online

Posted: at 11:44 am

It is hard to objectively judge comedy what makes someone funny greatly depends on the audience, and every comedian has the potential to offend someone.

But when the entire basis of a comedy act is based on stereotypes, one should rethink laughing at these jokes.

Jeff Dunham will be returning to the Bryce Jordan Center this Friday, where he can easily reach his target audience of conservative white folks the population generally found in central Pennsylvania.

Dunham is one of the worlds wealthiest and most successful comedians, and the majority of his scripts are based on stereotypes and racism. And while he does have a character mocking old white men, this does not justify the blatant racism behind his other characters.

As a ventriloquist, Dunhams performances consist of him having conversations with a variety of puppets, all created from his own mind. His most controversial characters include Achmed the dead terrorist and Jos Jalapeo, a Mexican immigrant.

Dunham has specifically stated that he knows making fun of 9/11 will never be funny, and Achmed was created to make fun of Osama bin Laden instead but making any jokes associated with the terror attacks on 9/11 should be condemned.

In his latest Netflix special which is tagged as politically incorrect on the streaming site Dunham jokes that he has been hesitant to bring out his beloved Jos Jalapeo since President Trump was elected. He also said in todays politically correct climate, some people dont think it is okay for him to talk to Jos.

It is not okay to make insensitive jokes about Mexican immigrants especially when this special was filmed in Dallas, a city that relies greatly on its immigrant populations and is greatly affected by Trumps policies.

Clearly, people find Dunham funny, and this probably will not change considering his ongoing success. But his fans should be sure to understand how problematic his characters are.

Dunham pokes fun at politicians as most comedians do, and has created a new character who serves as one of Trumps advisers. When telling Cincinnati.com about the character, he even said he has to be careful due to the political-correctness garbage present in the United States today.

He is also quoted saying he has only offended a small percentage of people, but how is it possible for him to know this for sure? How does he define offending someone and where are these numbers coming from?

It is impossible for comedians to understand the experiences of every individual, so this should not be a standard for what is acceptable in comedy. But Dunham and his supporters need to better acknowledge that his jokes are offensive to many populations.

The stereotypes and aesthetic associated with leftist activistsespecially liberal menare annoying, low-hanging fruit, but are not entirely out of touch with reality: Cucks. Snowflakes. Betas. The list goes on.

It is incredibly hard to be articulate and precise on this issue, but you know what I mean. The left has a perception problem that its not willing to admit.

Although this topic seems ridiculous, its undeniable that these representationswhether or not we may exercise significant control of themturn off many moderates and uninvolved political participants from the left. Our insistence on politicking to signal virtue and the manner by which we self-righteouslyand often hypocriticallyconduct ourselves shape these representations and certainly hold us back.

Although one can take the moral high ground and want to believe that we dont want those votes anyways, the reality of the situation is that the status quo is a hellscape for vulnerable populations and Democrats need to come into 2020 swinging. That means establishing themselves as confident, assertive, yet uncompromisingly progressive. We desperately need a makeover in 2020, but Im not exactly sure what that process looks like and whether it can ever be an ethical prescription.

But I do know that Im tired of supporting a movement that unequivocally defends the belief that when they go low, we go high. Im tired of insisting upon the innocence of corrupted institutions when the current state of affairs empowers deceit, outrage and spectacle in politics. We restrain ourselves, attempt to understand the other and ultimately forgive instead of seriously confronting them on Twitter or cable news and hardly attempt to change the rules of engagement entirely.

Democrats need to play to win because anything else condemns us to the status quo: a pitiful, whiny existence that always seems to place us on the losing side of political scandal. Im not arguing that we should collude with foreign governments to improve our representations, but simply to critically think about perception and to refuse to be a group of pushovers. People are counting on the left in 2020 and Im ready to engage in some McConnell-level tactical maneuvering and scheming if thats what it takes to deliver.

45 was rewarded with the presidency for his vulgarity. I dont think that the left or even the country as a whole wants to see us fix that by showing compassion. Im tired of a liberal politics obsessed with being virtuous and ultimately boring in the name of not offending those with disagreements.

The current political sphere is anything but business as usual and its entirely unconvincing to respond by suppressing our natural human emotions. For instance, Betos raw speech about Trumps comments on the El Paso shooting was a huge turn-on for voters and is probably the only thing keeping him alive at this point; dropping f-bombs wont necessarily win us seats, but I think its safe to say voters minimally want their politicians to be authenticand thus outraged.

Moreover, the right has successfully branded itself as the party of sexy big-businesses and independent thinkers fixated on telling the truth when blue-pilled liberals cant step outside of their fantasy land. Internet trolls and conservative influencers poke fun at the liberal participation trophy culture, safe spaces from outside criticism, and our obsession with losing often, but at least ethically. And quite honestly, these strategies work really well.

I feel a strong, internal embarrassment, for instance, when thinking about Democratic candidates pandering to people of color, Portland Antifa dressing up as bananas, and Hillary desperately pleading for us to Pokemon Go to the polls. Voters can easily sense whos being real and whos trying way too hard to take the moral high ground by being woke. Its hard to point to specific examples, but the method by which so many on the left self-righteously conduct themselves, particularly on the internet to appeal to young voters, is blatantly cringe-worthy.

However, this issue with the lefts representations doesnt stem from its core values of compassion or empathy. The basic tenet of empathy is not mutually exclusive with being inspiring and assertive. The fight for emancipatory politics can and should be made sexy through a deliberate refocusing from issues like political correctness to energizing struggles against unjust authority and political elites.

Groups like Black Lives Matter and policies like Medicare for All or the Green New Deal, for instance, are certainly controversial but definitely not cringy. In fact, the right often plays to romanticized and nostalgic narratives about police officers, veterans, blue-collar workers and natural disaster survivors to garner sympathy and compassion just as often. The relevant difference is certainly an issue of our energy and framing.

On the internet, the logic of cancel culture, the focus on microaggressions, and the Ellen & Bush debacle are all excellent examples of how liberals empower an unconscious system of desire that ultimately restrains leftist politics and empowers Donald Trump. The right finds immense pleasure in name-calling because it ruptures and trolls the social authority that out-of-touch liberals have mandated. In this sense, there exists a masochistic structure of enjoyment. Knowing that Trump is bad for people is not enough to lessen the enjoyment of his regime and realizing oneself as problematic is irrelevant when the right offers a more appealing method of living; for many, it almost seems impossible to imagine liberals having fun without constantly talking about how ethical they are. Liberals will argue that they are nevertheless on the right side of the issue and that they claim a truer vision of politics but such concerns are at best merely tangential for those not already sold on the left.

We cant control what the right calls us, but we can certainly alter the behaviors that enable such stereotypes. My vision is not a shift away from our current policy stances, but rather a refusal to solely rely on seeming trendy and virtuous. Those tangibly affected by the enactment of progressive policies dont care about our perceived moral high ground, or at least not enough to choose being ethical over a leftism that is fed up and willing to do what it takes to win back the White House and Senate.

AP Interview: Franco grandson blasts Spain over exhumation – The Associated Press

Posted: at 11:43 am

MADRID (AP) The grandson of late dictator Gen. Francisco Franco said that Thursdays planned exhumation of his grandfathers body is a profanation and that Spains interim government wants to turn it into a rally before a Nov. 10 general election.

Francisco Franco Martnez-Bordi spoke to The Associated Press hours before Francos remains were due to be moved from a grandiose mausoleum to a more discreet cemetery.

Its an all-out desecration, said Franco Martnez-Bordi, accusing Supreme Court judges who ruled in favor of the government the Catholic Church and center-right Spanish parties who didnt impede the reburial of being accomplices of prime minister Pedro Snchezs Socialists plan.

The government, he said, had to hop over several obstacles with the complicity of those people to arrive on time and be able to use the exhumation as part of the electoral campaign.

Spain, he said, is under the dictatorship of political correctness.

Associations of relatives of those who died in the 1936-39 Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship regard Francos presence at the gargantuan Valley of the Fallen as an insult.

The government says that its also against Spains standing as a modern democratic state and that no dictator should be enshrined in a state mausoleum. Snchez had initially promised to get the exhumation done by the end of 2018, but he faced a long legal battle with Francos seven grandchildren and political opposition.

Franco Martnez-Bordi, 64, and 21 other relatives will be attending Thursdays exhumation behind closed doors and a private Mass at the reburial graveyard in the outskirts of Madrid. Authorities have banned protests in the area and cameras will only be allowed outside of both sites.

What they want is to humiliate as much as possible, said Franco Martnez-Bordi, who criticized that the government has not allowed state honors in tomorrows ceremonies despite Franco having been Spains head of state and government for decades.

But the family has plans to use a Spanish flag with a black eagle, symbols associated with the Franco regime, over their grandfathers coffin on Thursday, when the hearse heads from a helicopter to the Mingorrubio cemetery. The flag is the same used for the original burial on Nov. 23, 1975.

The Supreme Court last month granted the government the right to rebury the dictators remains in the Mingorrubio cemetery, where Francos late wife Carmen Polo has been resting since 1988, over the relatives choice of Madrids Almudena Cathedral, where they own a grave slot. Authorities feared the cathedral could become another pilgrimage site for nostalgic fascists.

Franco Martnez-Bordi said the family planned to take their case to the European Court of Human Rights hoping to be granted permission to move Francos remains to the cathedral.

He also dismissed as a lie that relatives of victims buried alongside the dictator at the Valley of the Fallen had been asking for Francos removal from the site for decades.

Nobody, or almost nobody, gives a damn where my grandfather is buried, he said. Im not going to say that there isnt somebody around, but both winners and losers (in the war) are all dead. Their grandchildren are being influenced by the media and the associations who represent their grandparents.

Francos exhumation stems from amendments of a 2007 Historical Memory Law that aimed to seek redress for the estimated 100,000 Franco victims who are buried in unmarked graves across Spain, including thousands at the Valley of the Fallen.
