The Nam June Paik Art Center presents a special exhibition Our Bright Future-Cybernetic Fantasy from July 20 to November 5, 2017. This exhibition explores modern technology and art from the perspective of the "Cybernetics"of Nam June Paik who not only gave relationship between the technological environment and the human being but also presented a futuristic vision to it. Under the themes of robots, combination, post-human, the 15 participating teams warn against the end of the geological era which has been led by humans and requires the birth of the new human. The participating artist Taeyeun Kim and pela Petri will give an artist talk on July 22 in conjunction with 2017 International Symposium of Nam June Paik Art Center, and four participating teams (diana band, Insook Bae, PROTOROOM, Unmake Lab) will lead a Technology/Media Workshop on every Saturdays in August. Also the celebration for the 1st floor renewal opening will be on July 20, accompanied by special performances by SUDDEN THEATER, Hyunjoon Chang and Kim Oki / Park Jiha / John Bell / Rmi Klemensiewicz.

Cybernetics,a scientific study established by Norbert Wiener, was widely accepted in the field of scientific technology around the 1940s. The theory which aimed to equally control both living organisms and machines has dominated the trends of technological development, that is, the "Humanization of the Machine"and the "Mechanization of the Human."The belief that technological development will open a new world to the human race is paralleled with the fear that the very technology will take not only jobs but also the human identity from us. Although we are on the brink of the advent of the strongest Artificial Intelligence, we are living on the earth which is devastated more than ever. So, is there a future for us? Are the two options of sustainability and apocalypse the only frame of our future?Or, is there another option available to us were missing?

The exhibition is composed of Robot, Interface, and Posthuman. Each of themes is intended to create various questions. The Robotsection features Nam June Paiks Robot/People and Robot K-567, Yang Zhenzhongs Disguise, Jinah Rohs An Evolving GAIA, Jongjun Sons Defensive Measure, and Zach Blas & Jemima Wymans im here to learn so :)))))). They not only successfully catch the conflict and oscillation caused by the coexistence between men and machines, but also accuse the man-machine cooperation system of being cracked. The Interfacesection goes deeper into the crack of the man-machine cooperation system to try to make a new seam. PROTOROOMs Feedback of MetaPixels-Language for Digital Atoms, Unmake Labs Rumor in the City and the City, and Joosun Hwangs Mind!=Mind take down the black box of machines which isolate humans, and relocate the position of humans in the midst of machines. Besides, recent works such as Insook Baes The Sum and diana bands Phone in Hand: Choir Practice are also presented, suggesting the solidarity of humans through machines. The Posthumansection shows that the time has come when the boundary between the human and the non-human, having been destroyed by cybernetics, must be re-established in a network of horizontal relationships. Taeyeun Kims Island of A-life cultivates the artists DNA injected into a plant; pela Petris Miserable Machine converts mussels muscle contraction to the human labor system; Unknown Fields Rare Earthenware shows the process of collecting the raw material used for smart technologies, telling us that humans have been the geological power who has power over all creatures on the earth.

In his Cybernated Art in Manifestos (1965), Nam June Paik wrote that some specific frustrations caused by cybernated life, require only through accordingly cybernated shock and catharsis. So his argument is that the healing of the suffering in this cybernated life, or smart life of today, is possible only through smart technologies. The truly smart life is not the objectification of each other in which robots replace humans or in which humans control robots, but connecting deeply inside the technological environment and thereby making new interfaces between the human and nonhuman. The participating artists in the exhibition Our Bright Future- Cybernetic Fantasy encourage the birth of a new human by making cracks in the cybernated system and actively inquiring about our technological environment. In this way, the participating artists warn against the end of the geological era which has been led by humans, and requires the birth of the new human, by creating a new relationship between the human and the nonhuman.

Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills is first to be renamed in Ascension Health system – Crain’s Detroit Business

Posted: at 9:32 am

Ascension Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills on Tuesday became the first hospital in the 141-hospital St. Louis-based Ascension Health family to receive a new name under the nonprofit health system's rebranding strategy.

Over the next 12 months, 14 other Ascension hospitals in Michigan will add Ascension to the beginning of their names, Ascension executives said in a statement.

For example, Providence Hospital in Southfield will soon be known as Ascension Providence Hospital and St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit will become Ascension St. John Hospital.

In 2018, the name of metro Detroit's five-hospital St. John Providence Health System name will be retired and folded into the management of Ascension Health Michigan.

Last September, Gwen MacKenzie, Ascension's senior vice president and Michigan market executive, told Crain's about the health care rebranding and management integration plan that will tie all properties under one surname and reporting structure.

Ascension medical groups, nursing homes and other sites of care also will prominently feature the Ascension name. Ascension's other 126 hospitals in Wisconsin and 22 other states will also change their names in the coming year.

Other regional Ascension hospital groups include Borgess Health in Kalamazoo; Genesys Health in Grand Blanc; St. Joseph Health System in Tawas City; and St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw.

Last year, Ascension eliminated local hospital and regional boards and created the Southeast Michigan Hospital Board, the West Michigan Hospital Board, the Mid-Michigan Hospital Board and the Michigan Market Board that oversees all Ascension properties in the state.

Rochester-based Crittenton Hospital Medical Center was named Ascension Crittenton Hospital on Tuesday, becoming the first of 15 Michigan hospitals to be unified under the Ascension name over the next 12 months.

The nearly 50-year-old Ascension Crittenton Hospital was acquired by the Catholic health system in October 2015. Ascension is the largest nonprofit health system in the United States.

This is an important step forward for our hospital and the communities we serve as we work to enhance our commitment to providing compassionate, personalized care for all, Margaret Dimond, president and CEO of Ascension Crittenton Hospital, said in a press release Tuesday.

The name change nearly coincides with Crittentons 50th anniversary. The hospital treated its first patients on Aug. 15, 1967. Major exterior hospital signage was changed at entrances and in key internal areas to reflect the new name of the hospital.

Crittenton is the first hospital nationally to adopt Ascensions new naming and logo under an initiative announced in September to strengthen the sprawling health systems identity across 2,500 sites, including 141 hospitals. Ascension Crittenton has approximately 1,000 associates, 500 doctors and 290 beds.

By connecting the care we provide, we make it easier for patients and communities to find the care they need, when and how they need it, Nick Ragone, an Ascension senior vice president and chief marketing and communications Officer, said in a press release.

Other hospitals in the chain include St. John Providence in southeast Michigan; Borgess Health in Kalamazoo; Genesys in Grand Blanc; St. Marys of Michigan in Saginaw and Standish, and St. Joseph Health System in Tawas.

Nasa offering six-figure salary for new ‘planetary protection officer’ to defend Earth from aliens – The Independent

Posted: at 9:31 am

Nasa is hiring someone who can defend Earth from alien contamination.

The full-time role of planetary protection officer will involve ensuring that humans in space do not contaminate planets and moons, as well as ensuring thatalien matter does not infect Earth.

The pay is a six-figure salary:as much as $187,000 (141,000) a year plus benefits.

The job post reads: Planetary protection is concerned with the avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and roboticspace exploration.

Nasa maintains policies for planetary protection, applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration.

The three-year position with a chance to extend it to five years wascreated after the US signed the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, vowing to pursue studies of outer space ...and conduct exploration of them so as to avoid their harmful contamination and also adverse changes in the environment of the Earth resulting from the introduction of extraterrestrial matter.

There is only one other full-time role like it in the world at the European Space Agency, saysCatharine Conley, Nasas only planetary protection officer since 2014 (according toBusiness Insider). She is relocating to the agencys Office of Safety and Mission Assurance.

Under the international 1967 treaty, she explained that any space mission must have less than a one in 10,000 chance of contaminating an alien world, including making sure a robot or probe that is travelling past or photographing a planet does not cause harm.

Its a moderate level, Ms Conley said. Its not extremely careful, but its not extremely lax.

Trump signs Space Council Executive Order

Similarly, the new employee would work to protect Earth from potential contamination by planets like Mars, which scientists say may haveonce been covered in water andsupported life and there may be chance of life there now.

The new hire will likely be part of the upcoming Nasa expedition to Europa, amoon of Jupiter. The $2.7bn (just over 2bn)Europa Clipper mission, approvedby Congress, plans tomap the moonssurface and analyse whether it could be habitable. The probe could crash land, however, which is a circumstance the planetary protection officer should prepare for.

Candidates will be required to travel frequently but like any job, there will be a significant amount of emails, proposals and other reading.

Candidates must have at least one years experience as a top-level civilian government employee, and an advanced degree in physical science, engineering or mathematics. They must also have advanced knowledge of planetary protection.

The position also requires demonstrated skills in diplomacy that resulted in win-win solutions during extremely difficult and complex multilateral discussions. The new hire will also receive secret security clearance.

Only US citizens and US nationals can apply.

Nanotech Security has 57.5% upside, Haywood says – Cantech Letter – Cantech Letter

Posted: at 9:30 am

With its third quarter results due on Thursday, Haywood analyst Pardeep Sangha thinks Nanotech Security (TSXV:NTS) will deliver its first-ever quarter of positive EBITDA.

On August 3, after market close, Nanotech will report its Q3, 2017 results. Sangha expects the company will post EBITDA of $100,000 on revenue of $2.8-million, a topline that would be up 145 per cent over the $1.2-million in revenue the company generated in the same period last year. Sanghas targets are in-line with the street consensus of $300,000 in EBITDA on revenue of $2.7-million.

Sangha says he thinks this will be a historic quarter for Nanotech.

We are expecting Nanotech to achieve its first quarter of positive EBITDA in Q3FY17 due to the increase in revenue and higher gross margins, the analyst says. He adds he will be on the companys conference call, listening for whether or not management reiterates its guidance to double revenue in fiscal 2017, on the progress of a $30-million development contract, and for sales pipeline activity, including a tax stamp opportunity in India.

In a research update to clients today, Sangha maintained his Buy rating and one-year price target of $2.00 on Nanotech Security, implying a return of 57.5 per cent at the time of publication.

Sangha thinks Nanotech will generate Adjusted EBITDA of negative $200,000 on revenue of $10.0-million in fiscal 2017. He expects those numbers will improve to EBITDA of positive $4.6-million on a topline of $21.5-million the following year.

US send 12 fighter jets and 200 troops to North Korea’s doorstep amid WW3 fears – Daily Star

Posted: at 9:30 am

THE US has revealed it will send 12 fighter jets and 200 airmen to South Korea as tensions with North Korea threaten to erupt into war.

GETTY

The US Air Force will deploy the squadron of F-16 Fighting Falcons to Kunsan Air Base for four months from this month.

Airmen from the 176th Fighter Squadron will join the estimated 28,500 American soldiers, sailors, pilots and Marines currently based in South Korea.

Pacific Air Forces (PAF) said the fighter jets will ensure regional stability and security amid heightened tensions over North Koreas latest missile launch.

The US is still reeling after the communist state tested another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) the second in less than a month last week.

In a statement on its website, PAF said: The United States routinely evaluates readiness and repositions forces as needed to ensure capabilities necessary to meet obligations in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

These deployments demonstrate the continued US commitment to fulfill security responsibilities throughout the Western Pacific and to maintain peace in the region.

The announcement comes just days after the US conducted joint military drills with Japan in response to the missile test.

On Sunday, two US Air Force bombers flew over the Korean peninsula in direct response to Pyongyangs ICBM launch.

On the same day the US shot down a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific with its THAAD defence system.

US defence chiefs were said to be considering military options in the wake of the test on Thursday.

Yesterday US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to take further action to protect allies from the totalitarian nation.

Abe said: We have made consistent efforts to resolve the North Korean problem in a peaceful manner, but North Korea has ignored that entirely and escalated the situation in a one-sided way.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date rumours, news and trailers: Everything we know so far – Alphr

Posted: at 9:27 am

CD Projekt Red has a lot of expectation riding on Cyberpunk 2077. Not only is the studios latest title, The Witcher 3, widely regarded as one of the best videogames ever made, its new project is also based on a tabletop roleplaying game thats been capturing imaginations with tales of leather jackets and neon lights since 1988.

The Polish studio has shown its more than capable of handling complex, multi-layered storytelling across a vast open world so the signs are good that the shift from fantasy to science fiction will be a fruitful one. Beyond an initial trailer, however, theres relatively little known for certain about Cyberpunk 2077.

To keep you abreast with all the latest news and rumours, here is our rundown of everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077. Well be updating this page as new information surfaces.

Cyberpunk 2077 was revealed way back in 2012, three years before The Witcher 3 was released. This was followed in 2013 by a trailer that said the game would be released when its ready, which isnt a great deal to go on.

Some further hints came in early 2016, in the shape of a company investor call. This noted a timeframe to release Cyberpunk 2077 before June 2019, as well as plans to release two blockbuster RPGs before 2021. It was later clarified that the first of these would be Cyberpunk 2077.

Image 4 of 8

In 2016, a grant of 30 million zloty (around 6 million) from the Polish government was given to CD Projekt RED, to research seamless multiplayer and virtual city creation. That comes with a stipulation that the team delivers something over the next few years. Throw in a 2017 financial results conference, which made mention of progress on Cyberpunk 2077 being quite advanced, and wed say late 2018 or early 2019 is a good bet.

As for which platforms Cyberpunk 2077 will arrive on, the time frame makes it likely that the game will follow a similar release pattern to The Witcher 3 with a release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The main difference will be the inclusion of 4K editions for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

Back in 2013 CD Projekt RED's managing director Adam Badowski mentioned in a chat to Eurogamer that Cyberpunk 2077 would have multiplayer features, but tapered this by stressing the game would be a predominantly single-player experience.

News at the end of 2016, about the studios grant from the Polish government, also emphasised that the game would push the envelope for seamless multiplayer.

Will Cyberpunk 2077 have a multiplayer shooter mode? Will it be an MMO? Most likely not. Given CD Projekt REDs track record, we doubt the developers will want to stray too far from the scripted narratives that have made the studios name. Instead, expect a form of pervasive multiplayer that will aim to make Night City feel more alive, perhaps in the strand of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, where the paths of other players are seen as ghosts, and where other players can help or hinder progress through the games path.

Another upcoming AAA sci-fi game, Beyond Good and Evil 2, is aiming to straddle the balance between written storytelling and pervasive co-operation and competition although we expect CD Projekt RED to go less in the multiplayer direction than Ubisoft.

CD Projekt RED visual effects artist Jose Teixeira said in 2015 that Cyberpunk 2077 would be far bigger than anything else the studio has done. Part of the stipulation of the Polish government grant was that the developers create "cities of great scale based on the principles of artificial intelligence and automation", so it makes sense for the studio to approach this on a big scale.

The studio has also doubled in size, with more developers allegedly working on Cyberpunk 2077 than those that worked on The Witcher 3 at its most intensive. Not a lithe indie adventure, then.

Image 5 of 8

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in the Cyberpunk tabletop universe, created by Mike Pondsmith, whos also a consultant on the project. Pondsmiths RPG, mainly known by its second edition name of Cyberpunk 2020, is based in a sprawling fictional metropolis on the US West Coast, called Night City.

Even if youre unfamiliar with the details of Pondsmiths world, youll no doubt be familiar with the Cyberpunk tropes it went some way to solidify. From the novels of William Gibson to films such as Blade Runner, the Cyberpunk style tends to feature (in no particular order) rampant megacorporations, hackers, cybernetic implants, social unrest, artificial intelligence, leather jackets, sex robots, mohawks, hardboiled detectives, neon lights. Expect Night City to have all of these things at some point or another.

Marcin Przybyowicz did stellar work on the atmospheric, if occasionally overpowering, Witcher 3 soundtrack. Hes continuing to work for the studio on Cyberpunk 2077, so itll be interesting to see how the composer works within a genre that already has a very established soundscape.

Image 6 of 8

Set over 50 years after Pondsmiths Cyberpunk 2020, CD Projekt RED has scope to explore technologies and cultures that were nascent in the original tabletop game. One of these will be Braindances virtual reality-like devices that let viewers experience events from the perspectives of other people. "People live someone elses life while sleeping in the gutter," lead gameplay designer Marcin Janiszewski told The Verge. "Its like a new drug."

Given its reverberations with current debates around the limits of immersive technology, wed expect these braindances to be a major part of Cyberpunk 2077s makeup.

One intriguing aspect of Cyberpunk 2077 may be how its creators handle language. While it was only floated as a consideration in 2013, CD Projekt REDs narrative and setting director, Sebastian Stepien, mentioned the possibility of having NPCs speaking in different languages with the player needing a translator implant to interpret what people are saying.

Speaking to dubscore.pl, Stepien said: The idea is to record everything in its original language. If there are, for example, Mexicans in the game, they will speak with slang. All performed by Mexican actors.

"Then a player could try a translating implant, and according to its level, he will get better or worse translation."

Its a very intriguing idea one that could lead to a lot of interesting narrative opportunities from a writing perspective but hasnt yet been confirmed as a definite feature in the game.

Cyberpunk adventure game Technobabylon coming to iOS on August 16 – Phone Arena

Posted: at 9:27 am

Wadjet Eye Games, one of the few studios still making great adventure games, has just announced that its cyberpunk title Technobabylon is coming to iPhone and iPad devices this month.

Starting August 16, fans of the adventure genre will be able to download Technobabylon via App Store. According to developer Wadjet Eye Games, since its launch back in 2015, Technobabylon has become one of its best selling and best-reviewed games.

Adventure games are first about the atmosphere and story, but puzzles are an important aspect as well. Technobabylon has them all covered since Wadjet Eye Games presents it as a Blade Runner meets Police Quest point & click adventure.

Visually, Technobabylon features retro-styled pixel art, so if you can't stand pixelated graphics, you might want to skip this one, although you'll be missing an intense cyberpunk plotline as well.

The story in Technobabylon takes place in the City of Newton, in the year 2087. The game sets you loose in an amazing world where wetware wires people directly to the web, where the cerebral online Trance has replaced almost any need for human interaction.

You'll be investigating a serial Mindjacker who is hijacking the neural wiring of what appear to be normal people. He steals their knowledge and ultimately kills them. It's up to you to find out who's the person behind that dreaded nickname and what drives him to commit those atrocious murders.
