SAN JOSE, Calif. This years Silicon Valley Comic Con (SVCC), held on April 2123 at the San Jose Convention Center, added space exploration to the events mix of pop culture and technology. Both NASA and the SETI Institute had large displays in a central area of the exhibit hall. Panels were held throughout the convention, with scientists and engineers discussing a variety of space-related topics. Other highlights included a talk by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and the SETI InstitutesSpaceBall Gala.

The SVCC event was great public outreach and just a lot of fun, said Chris McKay, the senior space scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. Talking about Mars exploration at the SVCC was a natural fit. I see a lot of overlap between the NASA missions and the world of comics.

NASA panels and exhibits were coordinated by the Ames Office of Education and Public Engagement. NASA provided 24 panelists who spoke on panels about the exploration of the Solar System and beyond, NASAs Journey to Mars, research aboard the International space Station, living in space, NASAs next technology, and Mars science.

NASAs booth on the exhibit hall floor included displays about laser communications technology, exoplanets, aeronautics research, space biosciences, human factors, and more. Staff from NASA Ames missions such as the planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft and the SOFIA airborne observatory answered questions and talked about the findings of those missions. SOFIA pilots were available to sign autographs and visitors could take pictures of themselves in a standing astronaut suit with a peek-through cutout in the helmet.

On Saturday, April 22, Buzz Aldrin spoke at the Civic National theater to a crowd of about 2,000 people about his career as a NASA astronaut, the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and his plan to land humans on Mars by 2035.

The SETI Institutes booth had a cutaway model of NASAs SOFIA flying observatory showing the aircrafts interior, as well as models of the Kepler spacecraft and the Allen Telescope Array (ATA). Visitors could talk to SETI Institute scientists and get a free pair of eclipse glasses. SETI scientists spoke on panels about the hunt for life beyond Earth and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

The SpaceBall Gala featured lightning space talks by researchers, theremin music, and a live auction. On Sunday, the SETI Institute presented a screening of the movie Contact (1997), complete with commentary by SETI Institute astronomer Jill Tarter.

Virgin Galactic was represented on the exhibit hall floor by a model of Cosmic Girl, the Boeing 747-400 carrier aircraft that will air launch the two-stage LauncherOne rocket carrying small satellite payloads into orbit. Scott Macklin, Propulsion Boost Stage Manager at Virgin Orbit, gave a talk about how Virgin Galactic and Virgin Orbit are trying to increase access to space for both humans and satellites.

I believe that there is an intrinsic good that can come from both crewed and uncrewed spaceflight, said Macklin, who is responsible for the design development and operation of the first stage of LauncherOne, including the rockets boost engine, NewtonThree.

After a brief summary of what the experience of a suborbital flight aboard SpaceShipTwo would be like, Macklin discussed the orbital LauncherOne rocket. The 747-400 carrier aircraft Cosmic Girl will carry the LauncherOne rocket to an altitude of about 35,000 feet (10,668 meters). The first stage of LauncherOne is powered by a single 73,500 pounds-force (326.9 kilonewtons) of thrust NewtonThree rocket engine. This engine would typically fire for about three minutes.

After stage separation, the 5,000 pounds-force (22.2 kilonewtons) of thrust NewtonFour rocket engine will carry a satellite payload weighing up to 661 pounds (300 kilograms) into orbit. The company is hoping to reduce development and production costs with innovative techniques for manufacturing carbon fiber propellant tanks and 3-D printed combustion chambers.

3D Printing in Space: Florida Institutes to Research Advanced Materials and Manufacturing for Space Exploration – 3DPrint.com

Posted: at 11:15 pm

In an effort to strengthen the United States through manufacturing, the government established the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, better known as Manufacturing USA, in 2014. As several of these Manufacturing USA institutes are linked to 3D printing, we follow them rather closely, and now NASA is launching a similar initiative albeit much smaller in scale dedicated to space exploration and research.

The Space Technology Research Institutes (STRI) will be composed of multiple universities forming two institutes: one dedicated to researching biological engineering in space, and one dedicated to the development of next-generational materials. Most recently, Florida State Universitys High-Performance Materials Institute(HPMI) and theFlorida A&M UniversityFlorida State University College of Engineeringhave joined the initiative.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our faculty researchers and students to participate in a project that pushes the boundaries of science and will have a major impact on space travel and exploration, said Gary K. Ostrander, Vice President for Research at HPMI. FSUs High-Performance Materials Institute was designed to explore the possibilities and uses of next-generation materials, and this project will allow them to apply their expertise in an exciting way.

HPMI is a multidisciplinary research institute staffed mostly by faculty from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, and will receive funding for research towards advanced materials and manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing. In particular, the institute will work on the development of carbon nanotube-based structural materials that can be used to create vehicles, power systems and even habitats for use in missions to the moon and Mars, for example.

The money will help to fund several graduate students as well as one postdoctoral researcher.

The High-Performance Materials Institute is a leader in developing advanced nanocomposites and additive manufacturing that will be critical for mans extended presence in deep space, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Dean J. Murray Gibson said. Because of this grant, our students will have unique opportunities to participate in an exciting future major space program.

The Space Technology Research Institutes project will invest $15 million in each institute over a period of five years. The funding will be distributed among the partner universities comprising the institutes, which so far include:

In addition, industrial partners include Nanocomp Technologies and Solvay, as well as the US Air Force Research Lab.

HPMI has been designated as an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center by the National Science Foundation and as a Center of Excellence by the Florida Board of Governors. The institute, as its name suggests, is dedicated to the development of advanced materials for multiple industries and technologies, but for the next few years at least, it looks like theres going to be a heavy focus on outer space and likely on 3D printing. Its rare to encounter a discussion of traveling to the moon or Mars without 3D printing talk as well, whether its in relation to rocket engines or medical tools or even lunar housing.

Its exciting to know that I could have a student who could get experience here on this project and then potentially work on the mission to Mars in the future, said Tarik Dickens, an assistant professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering who is also working on the project.

Six faculty members from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering will work with the STRI, which will be led by Professor Gregory Odegard at Michigan Technological University. HPMI Director and FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Professor Richard Liang will act as an area leader and principal investigator for the college. Discuss in the Florida State forum at 3DPB.com.

North Korea vows to nuke THIS country first if WW3 breaks out – Daily Star

Posted: at 11:14 pm

NORTH korea has revealed the first country it would nuke if World War 3 broke out, according to terrifying claims from a Pyongyang newspaper.

Hermit Kingdom mouthpiece Rodong Sinmun claims Japan would be the first country to be blanketed with radioactive clouds if war erupted on the Korean peninsula.

The official daily paper of the ruling regime boasted of the ease with which the totalitarian state could unleash its army on Japan.

The paper added: Not only those who try to harm us but their supporters will not be safe if any war breaks out.

The chilling threat comes as Japan authorised a helicopter carrier to use weapons against attacks from North Korea if necessary.

Japanese defence chiefs ordered the Izumo Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter carrier to protect a US Navy supply ship in the Pacific.

The troops on board the Japanese ship have been authorised to use the minimum necessary use of weapons amid North Korean threats to sink US vessels, the Japan Times reports.

The US armada led by the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was sent by Trump to within striking range of North Korea.

Not only those who try to harm us but their supporters will not be safe if any war breaks out.

Now Rodong Sinmun has accused Japan of fanning war tensions and urged the nation to resolve the crisis on the Korean peninsula peacefully.

The state-owned paper reported the story under the headline: Japan's Reckless Act Which Drives Itself into Ruin.

It added: It's obvious that Japan's fanning of a Korean Peninsula crisis is intended to proceed toward its militarization and reinvade the peninsula.

Joint US and South Korean forces have flexed their muscles in an aggressive display of military power, sure to heighten tensions on the Korean border to unbearable levels

But Japan is not the only country North Korea has threatened to attack.

The rogue nation has promised to strike the US and South Korea, saying they will be submerged into a sea of fire and reduced to ashes.

REVEALED: Nuke bunkers in Britain that YOU could hide in if WW3 explodes – Daily Star

Posted: at 11:14 pm

MILLION pound nuclear shelters are lying underneath our feet across the UK ready and waiting for World War 3, and the Daily Star Online can reveal exactly where they are.

DS

The threat of a nuke war involving a missile-firing North Korea is higher than ever before, and when the time comes Britons will desperately cram into nuke shelters across the country.

Some of those shelters in the likes of Manchester, York and Reading we will be allowed into, but a cold war expert reveals others are also kept hidden away from society.

But despite all the protection, Nick Catford, the author of Cold War Bunkers, has a chilling warning for Daily Star Online readers: We are not prepared for a nuclear war.

Survival firm Vivos is building and furnishing fallout bunkers for anyone who wants to survive nuclear war, a disease pandemic or the apocalypse.

1 / 26

The country currently houses 14 publicly known nuke bunkers, all of which were built for the Cold War and are still standing today.

They are peppered across the country, as shown in our map, although many more that were built have either been demolished or rebuilt for different use.

Heres Daily Star Onlines list of the shelters, which are dotted across England, Wales and Scotland:

Kim Jong-un used the annual "Day of the Sun" parade in Pyongyang to make a chilling display of the country's burgeoning nuclear power and military might

1 / 30

Although the public could flee into some of these bunkers in the event of an all-out war involving the likes of Russia, North Korea and USA, they werent actually built for us, Cold War Bunkers writer Nick told Daily Star Online.

Provision was never made for the people here, ever, he told us. The Government, military and services were prepared for themselves.

But in other countries there was. In Sweden for example during the cold war, when you had a new build you would have to have fallout shelters included, but we never had that.

Some people built their own fallout shelters there are some fallout shelters in houses but they are very few and far between.

He added: (If there was a nuclear war) theres very little we could do.

In the Cold War the local and national government all had bunkers and fall out shelters and the main reason for those was so that in the event of a nuclear attack they could keep services running.

An inside view of North Korea

1 / 30

Nick revealed to Daily Star Online that besides the Government-commissioned bunkers, there are actually secret shelters lying underneath properties across the country that are kept hidden from the public.

During the threat of Cold War some people built their own bunkers under their homes, he said.

There was a company in Kent that would build shelters to order in your garden.

There was this one man in Brixton, Devon who got a bit paranoid in the cold war, and built his own house with a shelter underneath it.

I stayed there the night once, and hed fitted it out in similar equipment to the Government!

Hes got plenty of food, water, hes got the generator. He is quite well provided for.

But for how long? Everything is going to run out, so youve got to come out at some time.

All the tins (of food) there I remember were dated to the 1980s, so they never got replaced!

Putin has an arsenal of state-of-the-art weaponry at his fingertips. Could this be the hardware that wages WW3?

1 / 11

The T-90 tank: equipped with a 125mm smoothbore cannon and remote controlled anti-aircraft gun

The locations of the secret bunkers revealed to us are mainly in villages, and include Pluckily in Kent, Balcombe in Sussex, South Godstone in Surrey and Brixton in Devon.

But if anyone is now thinking about building their own nuke bunker, Nick has a word of warning: The cost is colossal.

He told us: When the UK started its bunker building programme in the 1950s, at the start of the Cold War, we put all our radar stations in protected bunkers and just building the bunkers for the radar stations virtually bankrupted the country.

We cant afford it, and anyway, no bunker that we could build would withstand a direct hit.

They need blast protection, which would be virtually impossible to provide.

You then need filtration so if your air runs out, any air that you bring from the surface is clean from radiation. This would be horrendously expensive.

You would also need a supply of fuel for running a generator and a water supply - it is all just so expensive and the idea of the Government building shelters isnt going to happen.

DS

But dont be downhearted, as Nick believes there is only a small chance of a nuclear bomb going off in Britain.

There is no threat whatsoever from the Soviets. I dont think there is a threat from North Korea either, he said.

The only slight worry would be if a terrorist organisation got hold of something. It would be a small, probably quite dirty bomb. But I dont think you could prepare for something like that.

If anyone is still concerned about not having a bunker, Nick told Daily Star Online: I dont think we have anything to worry about. I have a bunker, but I wont be running to it! I wouldnt want to be stuck down in that.

North Korea ready for WW3? Satellite images reveal submarine missile launcher site – Express.co.uk

Posted: at 11:14 pm

Commercial satellite imagery has identified the second submarine missile site at the Nampo Naval Shipyard on North Koreas west coast, according to thinktank 38 North which monitors the secretive state.

The watchdog says the discovery of the second launcher could indicate Kim Jong-un has stepped up his submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) programme.

The test stand barge is reportedly similar in size to previous Russian models which can be used to conduct underwater tests for new submarine missile launch systems before they are installed in submarines.

If both barges were acquired at the same time, it would imply that Pyongyang had planned a more extensive test program than it has so far conducted

Joseph S Bermudez Junior from 38 North

Joseph S Bermudez Junior from 38 North said: The discovery of a second missile test barge may have a number of implications for the future of North Koreas SLBM program that appears to be an important priority for Kim Jong-un.

A key consideration is the timing of the acquisition of the barges. If both were acquired at the same time, it would imply that Pyongyang had planned a more extensive test programme than it has so far conducted.

However, since the second barge seems to have been acquired three years after the first, this could mean that North Korea is planning to accelerate its SLBM test program to include a west coast component or develop new SLBM designs, or that it may deploy a ballistic missile submarine with the West Sea Fleet.

DIGITAL GLOBE/SCAPEWARE3D

DIGITAL GLOBE/SCAPEWARE3D

None of these possibilities are mutually exclusive.

It is unclear if the barge was manufactured in North Korea, but 38 North says a survey of the Norths naval shipways suggest the barge was imported into the country.

38 North said: The barge appears identical in size (9m by 22.5m) and layout to the original barge that was first seen in 2014 at the Sinpo South Shipyard on the countrys east coast, which has been involved in at least four, and maybe as many as six, launches of the Pukguksong-1 (KN-11) SLBM since then.

The satellite images are the latest in a series suggesting there could be fresh activity at Kim Jong-uns test sites.

Last month chilling images revealed unusually high levels of activity at Kim Jong-uns Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site.

Experts say the images could mean a nuclear test is imminent as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson calls for North Korea to destroy its nuclear arsenal.

North Korea has conducted five declared and remotely detected underground nuclear tests at its dedicated nuclear test site at Punggye-ri in mountainous terrain in the northeast of the country over the last decade.

The discovery comes as the White House says it does not see US President Donald Trump holding a meeting with Kim Jong-un any time soon.

After Mr Trump told Bloomberg News he would be honoured to meet with Kim, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters the US would need to see North Korea's provocative behaviour ratcheted down immediately.

AFP

North Korea suggested yesterday it will continue its nuclear weapons tests, saying it will bolster its nuclear force "to the maximum" in a "consecutive and successive way at any moment" in the face of what it calls US aggression and hysteria.

Mr Trump has said a major, major conflict with North Korea is possible over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, while China said last week the situation on the Korean peninsula could escalate or slip out of control.

In a show of force, the US has sent the nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group to waters off the Korean peninsula to join drills with South Korea to counter a series of threats of destruction from North Korea, formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The Japanese have sent the Izumo to safeguard US naval manoeuvres in the region such as refuelling the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group.

Shinzo Abe, Japans Prime Minister, has warned Kim Jong-Un represents a serious threat as missiles are launched towards his country.

A spokesman for North Korea's foreign ministry said in a statement carried by its official KCNA news agency: Now that the U.S. is kicking up the overall racket for sanctions and pressure against the DPRK, pursuant to its new DPRK policy called 'maximum pressure and engagement', the DPRK will speed up at the maximum pace the measure for bolstering its nuclear deterrence.

The measures for bolstering the nuclear force to the maximum will be taken in a consecutive and successive way at any moment and any place decided by its supreme leadership.

North Korea test-launched a missile on Saturday which Washington and Seoul said was unsuccessful.

Tension on the Korean peninsula has been high for weeks over fears the North may conduct a long-range missile test, or its sixth nuclear test, around the time of the April 15 anniversary of its state founder's birth.

North Korea to ‘reduce US mainland to ruins’ Kim in WW3 confirmation – Daily Star

Posted: at 11:14 pm

NORTH Korea has said it will launch an attack on multiple countries in a chilling confirmation World War 3 is coming.

The rogue state accused the United States of pushing the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war after US bombers took part in drills with the South Korean and Japanese air forces.

North Koreas state-controlled media has announced the country is now simply waiting for the moment it will reduce the whole of the US mainland to ruins.

It warned Americas vast territory is exposed to our preemptive nuclear strike" and that its army is "waiting for the moment it will reduce the whole of the U.S. mainland to ruins with its absolute weaponry of justice."

North Korea also promised to strike US allies, including South Korea and Japan, saying they will be submerged into a sea of fire and reduced to ashes.

But the risk of Kim Jong-un successfully launching a nuclear strike on the US seems unlikely.

WW3: THAAD missile OBLITERATES warhead in epic video – Daily Star

Posted: at 11:14 pm

IT could be the system that saves humanity from World War Three and rare footage has now surfaced showing the THAAD missile defence system in action.

Kim Jong-un wants to end the world according to Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, with fears so great Donald Trump has sent a huge armada of ships to North Koreas doorstep.

The biggest fears lie in the countrys possession of nuclear bombs whichKim has repeatedly said he will use on the West.

If nukes are fired at the US, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system is certain to be deployed.

Its designed to shoot down short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles before they get too close.

YOUTUBE

And now, extremely rare video posted to YouTube yesterday (April 30) has emerged showing the exact moment it does just that.

With the weapon in the skies, a surface-to-air missile is fired from a carrier.

It speeds into the air just as the warhead comes into view.

Russia is planting nuclear missiles along US east coast to cause monster wave during WW3, according to crackpot … – The Sun

Posted: at 11:14 pm

Relations between Washington and Moscow are at their worst since the Cold War

A RETIRED Russian colonel has made ludicrous claims that Russia has planted nuclear bombs around the shoreline of the US which would unleash a huge tsunami in event of WW3.

Viktor Baranetz, former spokesman for Moscows Defence Ministry, warned that President Vladimir Putins military has planted mole missiles near the east coast of America.

Reuters

If the crackpot claims are true, major US cities such as New York and Miami could be overwhelmed by a massive nuke-tsunami if the bombs are detonated, reports the Daily Star.

Baranetz also claims the missiles are capable of digging themselves in and sleeping until given the command to detonate.

Speaking with newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, he said: The Americans are deploying their tanks, airplanes and special forces battalions along the Russian border.

And we are quietly seeding the U.S. shoreline with nuclear mole missiles.

The former colonel said that while Russia is unable to compete with Americas colossal defence budget, it is using unconventional tactics in order to compete in a major conflict with Washington.

He said: The U.S. is the permanent world champion in the size of its military budget almost $600 billion (500 million), which is 10 times more than Russias.

Tensions between Russia and the US are at their worst since the Cold War.

Reuters

Despite praising Putin during his election campaign, President Donald Trump is now at odds with the Kremlin strongman after the US military destroyed an airbase belonging to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Dictator Assad is a key ally of Russia and Putin condemned the act of aggression from the Trump administration.

Psychedelic drugs could reduce the risk of suicide – Metro

Posted: at 11:13 pm

New research suggests that psychedelics could be used to lower the risk of suicide.

Psychedelics could be used in treatment for a range of mental illnesses; including depression, PTSD and anxiety according to information presented at the Psychedelic Science conference in California last week.

Substances such as MDMA are being examined as potential remedies for conditions such as PTSD, with an FDA-approved trial taking place later this summer.

Elena Argento, a researcher for the BC Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDs, claims psychedelics could play a significant role in decreasing the risk of suicide in vulnerable groups such as female sex workers.

Ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew made from plants found in South America, shows potential therapeutic qualities.

Argentos research is based on a four-year evaluation on sex workers access to health care conducted by AESHA which included 800 female sex workers in Vancouver.

Participants were asked about their drug use and mental health, including whether they had felt suicidal in the last six months.

Some of the women were excluded on the basis that they were feeling suicide at the time of the initial interview in order to establish a reliable measure of how psychedelics affect new periods of suicidality.

The researcher found that sex workers who had taken a psychedelic at some point in their life was linked to a 60% reduced risk of suicidal tendencies.

While crystal meth use and abuse during childhood remained a predictor of suicidal tendencies.

It should be noted that Argentos study was observational and it wasnt conducted under lab conditions.

Previous studies have suggested that LSD has proved effective in treating depression and anxiety, though research into LSD as a potential treatment for mental illness have had their progress stunted by Americas so-called war on drugs.

Argento told the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies conference that the next step in her research could be to decipher if specific types of psychedelic or frequency used make a difference to the subjects state of mind.

She said: We didnt separate out looking just at LSD or psilocybin, for example, although thats something we could look at in the future.

There are plans at the BC Center for Excellence to start doing some trials with psychedelics.

Potentially some of the sex workers from AESHA will have the opportunity to be enrolled in these trials of using psychedelics for various mental health issues.
