Jaguars LB Telvin Smith disappointed in defense’s progress – Florida Times-Union

Posted: May 30, 2017 at 2:19 pm

Jaguars outside linebacker Telvin Smith stepped behind a podium inside EverBank Field, used a towel to wipe his forehead, signed and said, Im a little heated today.

But it had nothing to do with the temperatures outside, which were cranked up several notches compared to the first week of OTAs.

Not because of the sun and the weather [because] of where were at as a team, Smith said.

With that, Smith delivered an honest and critical assessment of the Jaguars defense four OTAs into the final phase of their off-season program.

Some highlights:

*Asked what a player in his spot wants to get out of the next month, Smith said: The biggest thing Im trying to get out of [this time] is mostly [what we can get] out of this team. Right now is when were making the team. Its not when we go into training camp and we say, OK, now we can turn it on. Were going to decide the mentality of this team right now.

Smith added: I just think as a team, we should be further than we are.

*Smith said he spoke to the defense after todays workout.

The message? As players, we have to do our part. Its not the scheme. Its, what do we want? What is our mentality going to be?

*Smith wouldnt get too specific about what irks him about the defenses progress so far.

Just our mentality, he said. The mindset of our team. Things that we should be using to beat our opponents are still beating us. Ill just leave it right there.

*Smith said the honesty of coach Doug Marrone is something that is definitely appreciated and most definitely needed.

Added Smith: Anytime you have a group of so many guys under one roof, youre going to have [players who dont respond]. But you have to know what the bigger plan is and where were trying to go.

*Smith on if a standard can be established before the pads go on in training camp: It definitely can, in the way you run and the little things and the way you listen to all of the little rules like keeping your helmet on and things like that.

*Smith was asked what is going well for the Jaguars defense.

As a team, we are wanting to play well thats something every team is doing so thats nothing, he said. Guys are accepting the system and wanting to be a part of it and wanting to grow in it. But again, all of the teams are doing that, at least the great teams are. So thats not enough. Were still working on the execution part.

Opelika’s Tiger Square continues its steady progress – Opelika Auburn News

Posted: at 2:18 pm

The Tiger Square Shopping Center on Frederick Road, which received its certificate of occupancy in September 2016, is moving forward as it continues its attempts to add more tenants.

The center is 60 percent leased, with eight spaces still available at the center. The sizes of the spaces range from 1,500 square feet to 5,400 square feet, said Lee Alice Johnson with Berkshire-Hathaway HomeServices Commercial Real Estate Division.

The center has focused on attempts to place restaurants in the remaining spaces, she said.

What were looking for is compatible usage with the spaces that are already there, Johnson said. "They would also need to be non-competitive.

The 22-unit, 36,300-square-foot center consisting of three buildings, has three entrances one off of Frederick Road and two off of Corporate Park Drive.

The tenants range from chain restaurants to local retailers. Some of the tenants at the center include Smooth and Groove, Anytime Fitness and Simply Sleep. A local tenant that will be coming to the center is Mama Goldbergs Deli, which is expected to open in a few months, according to Johnson.

Were really excited to have Mama Goldbergs Deli out front, Johnson said.

Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said he is pleased to see the center doing well.

Its in a wonderful location, Fuller said. You've got a lot of synergy with Tiger Town being the cornerstone. It draws more store traffic in the area.

According to a marketing graphic for the center, 15,000 cars each day pass through the intersection of Frederick Road and Corporate Park Drive, making it an ideal location for both tenants and customers.

We certainly like to take advantage of our proximity to Tiger Town, Johnson said. All of our tenants have been very pleased with the amount of traffic that theyre getting.

Editorial: Global agriculture making progress against poverty – Omaha World-Herald

Posted: at 2:18 pm

The world has seen dramatic decreases in global poverty over the past three decades, and improvements in agriculture in poor and middle-income countries have been at the core of this progress, a new report says.

The report by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs says further progress is possible if the world pursues smart strategies to support agricultural development and innovation. Former Nebraska U.S. Rep. Doug Bereuter co-chaired the task force that developed the study, along with former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman of Kansas.

Population growth worldwide makes such an ag- focused effort especially important. The worlds population, now at 7.4 billion, is projected to rise to 8 billion by 2024 and 10 billion by 2056.

Half the growth is expected to be in Africa, the report states. Nigerias population is projected to climb from 180 million now to almost 400 million by 2050, making it the third-most populous nation.

Strengthening agriculture can produce positive ripple effects in a countrys economy, the new report says. Experience from the world for the last 200 years shows that increases in agricultural productivity are central to growth in other sectors.

Investments in agricultural development, the study says, have been proven to be more than twice as effective at reducing poverty as investments in other sectors. Improvements in agriculture have been one of the main factors promoting poverty reduction globally, the findings show.

From 1990 to 2015, the number of people worldwide living in extreme poverty (less than $1.90 per day) fell by more than 1 billion people. In 1990, 23 percent of residents in low- and middle-income countries were deemed chronically undernourished. The figure now is much lower: 13 percent.

At the same time, challenges remain. Many countries face food insecurity. The Chicago Council report cites particular problems along that line in Central America, and famine is now a serious threat of parts of East Africa.

As for agricultural production in Africa, the Brookings Institute reported last year that Africas ag producers need more electricity, more irrigation and better infrastructure. Cargill says African farmers at all scales of production need access to the inputs required to produce a successful crop high-yielding seeds, effective fertilizer and sufficient water. The Chicago Council report spells out a wide range of strategies to help, with recommendations on innovative finances, public-private collaborations and greater investment in ag research by universities.

Its encouraging to see the ways in which the University of Nebraskas ag-science and natural resources programs are working to strengthen agriculture in developing countries.

NU outreach in Tanzania has promoted livestock health and increased literacy for rural women. Work by the University of Nebraska-Lincolns National Drought Center aims to anticipate drought and flooding in the Horn of Africa.

NUs Water for Food Global Institute pursues water-science initiatives around the globe. And foreign students studying ag science at UNL describe production conditions in their home countries while studying innovations used here.

Agriculture has been at the center of recent economic progress for many developing nations. Outreach by our country, as shown by NUs efforts, can help those nations make further improvement to meet future needs.

Considerations for Planning Humanitarian Operations in Hybrid Warfare – smallwarsjournal

Considerations for Planning Humanitarian Operations in Hybrid Warfare

Scott A. Porter

Andrew F. Krepinevich, president of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, stated in his February 18, 2016, article in the Wall Street Journal, that the Army's biggest problem is its declining ability to wage the kind of protracted irregular wars that America's enemies increasingly prefer to fight. 1 Even Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 3-0, Unified Land Operations (2011) states the most likely security threats that Army forces will encounter will be within an irregular warfare environment that includes hybrid forces; a mix of regular, irregular, criminal, and terrorist forces in various combinations, usually seeking to fight a protracted war in populated areas. 2

Therefore, it is apparent that the United States military must be capable of operating within an irregular war against hybrid forces, including in support of large-scale humanitarian operations to relieve suffering and prevent more refugee crises. This is important for three reasons; mass migrations of populations and their potential impact on national security, the ethical considerations in the planning of humanitarian operations, and the necessity for the government and military to be proactive in complex emergencies.

Migration as a Weapon

Syria stands out as a current example of hybrid warfare (HW). 3 The war has caused over half of the prewar population to displace with over five million Syrians fleeing their country (Washington Post). 4 The magnitude of the Syrian mass exodus has strained the ability of those countries who care for and feed them, and has brought to light significant security concerns for Europe and the United States. 5

Because of a multiplicity of hostile forces in HW, a chaotic environment ensues whereby the innocents suffer the most. Any war zone is a dangerous environment to civilians, but in HW the side that controls populations and holds decisive terrain, often large cities, has a significant advantage. 6 Occupying hostile forces often intentionally deny food, shelter, and medical aid to the population. Even worse, as in the Syria example, hostile forces more often than not possess an unsympathetic attitude toward the local population by committing atrocities or sadistically forcing a political or ideological agenda upon them. They intentionally terrify the population, causing wide-spread displacement within the area, and eventually contribute to massive refugee movements out of the entire region. 7

Conventional forces can also add to the chaos. General Philip Breedlove, Commander of the U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander for NATO, asserts that in Syria the Russia and Syrian forces are using migration as a weapon. These large population movements are deliberately planned to mask the movement of criminals, terrorists, and foreign fighters. Just as importantly, they cause the other countries to react to massive immigration populations. The result is a humanitarian crisis like we have seen coming out of Syria. Dozens of countries, mostly in Turkey and Europe, are desperately trying to establish policies, procedures, and make-shift programs to house, feed, and care for millions of refugees. As a result, these massive movements of people have created national security concerns throughout much of the world, including in the U.S. 8

Ethical Considerations

There is also an ethical dimension to the plight of refugees, and there exist strong differences of opinion about refugee movements. The New York-based advocacy group Human Rights Watch, in reference to the Syrian refugee crisis, stated Forcing people to remain in a war zone, where they risk death and injury, is no solution to the challenge of protecting Syrians fleeing their county. 9 On February 9, 2016, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees cited international law, in that countries should admit all civilians who are fleeing danger and seeking international protection. 10 To complicate the problem, protecting the fleeing Syrians may be helping the hostile forces that made them flee. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu recently told reporters that with every refugee that we accept, in a way, we would be contributing to this ethnic cleansing aim. If this is a strategy to change the demography in Syria, then we all have to be vigilant against it. 11

These aforementioned points bring to light the crux of humanitarian aid in hybrid war, the need to align strategic objectives and execute actions that provide the best outcome or consequences for the pre-determined end state. Consequentialism, the most common form of ethics in the contemporary Western world, focuses on the end state. Within consequentialism are two basic forms, egoism and utilitarianism. Egoism concerns achieving self-interests as being the most favored outcome. 12

The utilitarian approach considers the best course of action as the one that promotes the best consequences for the most people. 13 From the U.S. strategic planning perspective these two basic forms of consequentialism must be considered in determining the end state for a given situation. It is from this end state that the operational plan, and then tactical plans, are designed to achieve specific objectives. Although many would question the uprightness of the egoism form, the reality is that many, if not most, nations intentionally place self-interests as the basis for their foreign interventions. 14 As the current lone superpower in the world, the U.S. often has a focus on a utilitarian-based approach while also using a cost-benefit analysis to inform decision-making. Stated plainly, any intervention into a foreign country should be with the aim of improving regional stability. So, specifically within large scale humanitarian efforts, what is the best course of action that achieves the best consequences for the most people of the affected populations?

Whole-of-Society Solutions

From a U.S. policy perspective, Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, U.S. Army (Ret.) and Maj. Gen. Margaret Woodward, USAF (Ret.), as guest columnists for Best Defense, identify the need for a more effective organization that inspires whole-of-society solutions to situations like Syria, or any hybrid war. They state that the U.S. is overly dependent on the U.S. military to solve problems. They propose that The nation needs a quarterback to organize the remaining muscle of a $4 trillion government, an army of nonprofits, the brainpower of universities, the engine of private sector, and networks of state and local governments that are now untapped or underutilized in crises. 15

Freakley and Woodward recommend revising the 1947 National Security Act to create a newly empowered National Security Council (NSC) with more authority, and one that includes whole-of-society solutions. Simply put, the NSC would create the strategy and also bring multiple entities together to prevent crises or to respond quickly and effectively once a crisis appears. After the conflict, their recommendation includes an approach like the Marshall Plan to enable a country to recover and rebuild. Experts from inside and outside of the government must be included, along with governments and experts from allied countries. The plan would need to be comprehensive and include the political, diplomatic, informational, economic, military and societal efforts. This new policy would align somewhat with current joint doctrine, Joint Publication (JP) 3-08, whereby the whole-of-government approach is discussed. The goal of this new NSC is first to keep a constant focus on U.S security goals and then develop a strategic vision for success.16

Operational Approaches

If the new NSC, as described by Freakley and Woodward does come about, they may have an ability to make more timely decisions. This would affect how quickly the U.S. Military must prepare for deployment into HW. There would be an immediate requirement to develop operational approaches to set the conditions for the whole-of-society solution. Major Rick Johnson, in his monograph in the Joint Special Operations University (JSOU) Report 13-4 states there are three imperatives for operational art in HW. It is important to note that these imperatives explain the characteristics of an operational approach, not a holistic approach such as the whole-of-society concept. 17

The first is that the approach must cognitively disrupt the hybrid threats logic in the forms of warfare employed, rather than just using physical means. The synchronization of combined tactical actions must achieve enough of a disruptive effect on the enemy that an opportunity exists to exploit the situation with a continuation of operations. Examples include the concept of Operational Shock to attack the coherent unity of the hybrid threat as a system, such as targeting the interconnections in the enemys system. 18 In the whole-of-society concept, along with doctrine contained in JP 3-0, experts from not only the military, but scientists and even scholars from think tanks and academia could be significantly helpful for the disruptive effect on the enemy. 19

The second imperative, based upon doctrinal underpinnings in JP 3-08, Interorganizational Coordination During Joint Operations, is to produce a fusion of actions within the combined efforts of military and non-military organizations. Again, the whole-of-society concept would benefit, this time by enabling this fusion of military and non-military organizations to occur. It is critical that the total approach fuse tactical successes to the strategic objectives within the same context which gave birth to the hybrid threat forces. Therefore, it is imperative that military forces possess a situational understanding of the area of operations and link tactical actions to the operational objectives. For example, multiple missions and tasks will be required to support the combined humanitarian effort. Military commanders and their staffs must fuse with non-military organizations and understand the big picture of how they fit into the overall plan. 20

The third imperative is understanding that HW is a relationally complex, and at times, chaotic situation. In HW, military commanders must probe for information and use emergent practices to gain and maintain the initiative over hostile forces. 21 Especially for Army commanders, the exercise of mission command is paramount, as prescriptive or uniform measures are too rigid and binding. Most information on the enemy and environment may come from the bottom up, so the use of disciplined initiative empowers leaders to discover unexpected opportunities and threats. 22

U.S. Military Proactive Approaches to Humanitarian Operations in Hybrid Warfare

With faster deployment timelines and more integrative requirements to be part of a whole-of-society approach, the U.S. military must have an expeditionary mindset and capabilities unequaled in previous conflicts. JP 3-29, Foreign Humanitarian Assistance, 03 January 2014, discusses Complex Emergencies. 23 The United Nations (UN) defines a complex emergency as a humanitarian crisis in a country, region, or society where there is a total or considerable breakdown of authority resulting from internal or external conflict and which requires and international response that goes beyond the mandate or capacity of any single agency and/or the ongoing UN country program. 24 JP 3-29 uses the UNs definition complex emergency in describing actions that might be necessary in HW for all the military services, but only in general tasks and terms. The requirement to integrate into a whole-of-society approach during HW means significantly more pre-planning and coordination in order to respond effectively and efficiently. 25

During HW, multiple players and numerous belligerent groups are operating within the area of operations, including those embedded within the population, even at times using them as human shields. Conducting humanitarian operations in a hybrid war often occurs within a chaotic and dangerous environment. To actively pursue operations to relieve widespread suffering and end atrocities, a robust and capable multi-national military force must provide a safe environment for the overall plan to be successful.

If the U.S. military commits to undertake a substantial humanitarian intervention, it must be part of a broader multi-national campaign to first eliminate the threat. This would require the new NSC and the whole-of-society approach to collaborate and fuse with our multi-national partners for the intended outcomes. This would also involve the U.S. military to do the same amongst partner militaries for operational and tactical operations. Although this collaboration would add to the complexity of planning and execution, the fusion would significantly enhance the overall capabilities and political support of the force. 26

The military approach must be integrative and multi-dimensional within the overall plan. Neither a singular approach using airstrikes, nor a one-time desperate attempt to push or parachute limited relief supplies into an area, will suffice. Even if successful, the relief ends up being short term and possibly counterproductive, enabling the belligerents to pilfer the supplies and sell them on the black market. Over the last several months we have seen unsuccessful humanitarian attempts like this in Syria, such as the February 2016 Munich Security Conference to temporarily halt the fighting in Syria to get relief supplies to staving communities. In hybrid war, political negotiations to stop the fighting seem improbable at best. Much more likely is for the belligerents to use the negotiations to buy time to make their own gains without threat of a foreign intervention. For example, at the same time as the Munich Security Conference was occurring, tens of thousands of Syrians were being driven from their homeland by Syrian government and terrorist forces. 27

Conclusion

Migration as a weapon in HW produces massive humanitarian crises. Syria is the most notable example during current times. In planning for humanitarian relief, ethical considerations must be included to determine the best strategy and course of action. Because of the complexity and requirement for faster responses with HW, whole-of-society approaches or something like it, are necessary to provide operational approaches that disrupt the hybrid threats logic rather than just using physical means, such as airstrikes. Even so, the U.S. militarys ground role in Joint Humanitarian Operations remains basically the same but will necessitate tighter timelines and more requirements to coordinate and collaborate with other militaries and more government and non-government organizations. Considering that the US military will most likely conduct humanitarian operations within HW scenarios, gaining and maintaining situational understanding is crucial to mission success. This will require a reliance on the philosophy and principles of mission command in order to provide a secure environment for a whole-of-society approach to the problems of the future.

Pagan Community Notes: Memorial Day, Manchester, Pagan Dawn, and more! – The Wild Hunt

Posted: at 2:16 pm

TWH Today marks Memorial Day in the United States. It is a day to honor the many men and women who have died in military service. According to a news report onABC, the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs together state that at least 1.2 million people have died fighting for America during its wars dating back 241 years. The VA has a breakdown of the losses per conflict since the American Revolution. In a 2016 blogpost,Druid John Beckett wrote, Let us remember our warrior dead. Let us remember those who answered the call to do what had to be done and who sacrificed all they had. It is right and good to celebrate their courage and valor.

Many Pagans, Heathens and polytheists have served and are serving in the U.S. military, and still others are members of military families. Memorial Day has a special significance to them. Veteran and Wiccan priest Blake Kirk said, Memorial Day isnt about veterans like me, who got to come home and go on with their lives. No, Memorial Day is supposed to be all about the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen who came home in caskets or in body bags. Or who never came home at all.The modern military experience can bepart of themodern Pagan, Heathen and polytheist experience. Those who are wounded and die in service to our country are not an anonymous other removed from our society and daily lives. Today many will honor our Pagan, Heathen and polytheistbrothers and sisterswho have fallen in the line of duty. What is remembered, lives.

MANCHESTER, England The suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert May 22 naturally generated intense reactions from within the immediatecommunity. Local Pagans were no different, focusing concerns on the atrocity itself, the safety of their family members and friends, and the need for compassion for the victims rather than a vilification of the Islamic community. Pagan Heather Veitch, told The Wild Huntarticulating a response was difficult, that the shock was intense, but after that wore off, she began doing what she could to help.

Veitch explained, As I wasnt in Manchester city centre at the time, and the emergency services were asking people to stay away, I began doing what I knew I could do: holding space, offering healing, and reaching out to my gods and goddesses to aid my healing work, to comfort the bereaved and broken, to midwife souls as they transition. I sent up prayers and offerings to protect those who were working to find and heal those caught up in these events, and waited on my own friends and family to check in.

Veitch added that she is proud of the citys emergency services units, and the wider community who has stepped up and did what they could with what they, in turn, had: offering rooms, food, transport, comfort, and so much more, but she also aches for victims and their loved ones. She said, What started as an evening of excitement and joy ended in terror and death.

She also said that she is angry, adding, Once again a tragic event in the Western world has focused our attention on the war against terror but events such as the bombing in Manchester are happening on a daily basis in other areas of the world. We need to remember, honour, and work to heal the suffering throughout the world, not just in white and/or Western societies. As a collective consciousness, we keep doing this, we keep perpetuating this, allowing it. We are all connected.

[This is only part of a longer statement on the Manchester attacks. Read Veitchs full comment here.]

Kate Large

ENGLAND In another story out of England, Kate Large has stepped down as editor-in-chief of the Pagan Dawn, the official and long-running publication of the Pagan Federation. Large joined the Pagan Dawn staff in 2013 as reviews editor, and moved into the editor position the following January, having been appointed by her predecessor, Atreyu Crimmins. Large said that she has stepped down because she felt it was time. I have achieved so much with PD, thanks to an incredible team of people. I want to develop my own career, as well as spending more time away from the screen, improving my physical health (I have fibromyalgia) and working with my daughter, who is home educated.

Large is a freelance writer and longtime media professional, having worked in the television, magazine, and film worlds. What is next for her? She said that she will return to her role as reviews editor, and also increase her paid media work. She added, Political activism and social justice work are areas in which I want to deepen my engagement. I am closely following the post-Brexit political landscape in Northern Ireland, and am keen to increase the amount ofam keen to increase the amount of work I could be doing to support causes that focus on peace and community reconciliation.

As for Pagan Dawn, a new editor has not yet be selected, and the organization is currently looking for the ideal candidate. Large said, Its a demanding job, but incredibly rewarding, and many times, I have called it the best job in Paganism.' Reflecting on her time as editor, she added, My most lasting memories are the phone calls in my kitchen with former PF Publications Officer, David Spofforth, and of the PF gathering at Moonhenge at which I was finally able to put faces to so many names. Leaving has been an incredibly difficult decision and many tears have been shed, but its time to trust to the process, and hand over to a new successor to build on our established work.

TWHStaff membersfrom the Pew Research Center responded to our questions on the categorization of minority faiths in this years global religious landscape survey. Conrad Hackett advised that religions with ethnic ties were generally included in folk religions, while Wicca and other new faiths were aggregated into the miscellaneous other category along with New Age traditions. Generally speaking, we sought to distinctly measure those faiths large enough to be reliably measured in the censuses and nationally representative surveys conducted around the world. Unfortunately, in this project we did not have sufficient data to report on many of the important, fascinating but smaller faiths around the world. Hackett said that the recent Worldwide Heathen Census was not used as a source.

Gregory Smith, associate director of research, initially provided information pertaining to the United States in particular, which appears to use a slightly different scheme. Smith said, The Pagan/Wiccan category, which accounts for 0.3% of the U.S. adult population, consists of people who used one of those exact terms (or sometimes both terms in combination, as in Pagan Wiccan) to describe their religion. The Other New Age category includes a smaller number of people who gave a variety of responses that we placed within the New Age family. These include responses like Asatru, Druid, Eckankar, New Age, Pantheist, Polytheist, Satanism, Scientology, Theosophy, Transcendental Meditation, Urantia Book and Ancient Aliens.

Coming up this week:Two men were fatally wounded in Portland Friday after standing up to a man harassing two Muslim women. One of the victims is well-known in the Pagan community through his family: Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche. We will have more on the story and his life in the coming week.

Trump, Nixon, Watergate & Conservative Nihilism – Peacock Panache

Posted: at 2:15 pm

In an article written for theAtlantic, James Fallows compares the current Administrations Russia scandal with Watergate, and provides reasons for his conclusion that this one is actually worse.

Worse for and about the president. Worse for the overall national interest. Worse in what it suggests about the American democratic systems ability to defend itself.

Fallows begins by deconstructing the adage that the coverup is always worse than the crime; as he points out, whatNixon and his allies were trying to do falls under the category of dirty tricks. It was a bungled effort to find incriminating or embarrassing information about his political enemies, and the adage held: the crime really wasnt as bad as the subsequent illegal efforts to cover it up.

And what is alleged this time? Nothing less than attacks by an authoritarian foreign government on the fundamentals of American democracy, by interfering with an electionand doing so as part of a larger strategy that included parallel interference in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and elsewhere. At worst, such efforts might actually have changed the election results. At least, they were meant to destroy trust in democracy. Not much of this is fully understood or proven, but the potential stakes are incomparably greater than what happened during Watergate, crime and cover-up alike.

Fallows enumerates other differences:As he points out, even in his stonewalling, Nixon paid lip service to the concepts of due process and check and balances. As I have previously posted, to the extent Trump even understands those concepts, he is contemptuous of them.

Nixonwas paranoid, resentful, bigoted, and a crook. But as Fallows reminds us, he was also deeply knowledgeable, strategically adept and publicly disciplined. Trumpwell, supply your own descriptors; Fallows is more reserved than I would be, settling for impulsive, ignorantand uncontrollable.

Most troubling, however, arent the differences between these two deeply flawed men. As Fallows notes, the social and political contexts within which they rose to power are dramatically different.

When Nixon ordered the firing of Archibald Cox,

Within the space of a few hours, three senior officialsRichardson, Ruckelshaus, and Coxhad all made a choice of principle over position, and resigned or been fired rather than comply with orders they considered illegitimate. Their example shines nearly half a century later because such a choice remains so rare.

The Republicans of the Watergate era stuck with Richard Nixon as long as they could, but they acted all along as if larger principles were at stake

On the merits, this eras Republican president has done far more to justify investigation than Richard Nixon did. Yet this eras Republican senators and members of congress have, cravenly, done far less. A few have grumbled about concerns and so on, but they have stuck with Trump where it counts, in votes, and since Comeys firing they have been stunning in their silence.

Charlie Sykes, who formerly hosted a conservative radio call-in show, recently summed up the reasons for that silence, and the differences between then and now.

If there was one principle that used to unite conservatives, it was respect for the rule of law. Not long ago, conservatives would have been horrified at wholesale violations of the norms and traditions of our political system, and would have been appalled by a president who showed overt contempt for the separation of powers.

Sykes gives a number of examples supporting his thesis that conservatism is being eclipsed by a visceral tribalism: Loathing those who loathe the president. Rabid anti-anti-Trumpism. Rooting for ones team, not ones principles. As he concludes,

As the right doubles down on anti-anti-Trumpism, it will find itself goaded into defending and rationalizing ever more outrageous conduct just as long as it annoys CNN and the left.

In many ways anti-anti-Trumpism mirrors Donald Trump himself, because at its core there are no fixed values, no respect for constitutional government or ideas of personal character, only a free-floating nihilism cloaked in insult, mockery and bombast.

Needless to say, this is not a form of conservatism that Edmund Burke, or even Barry Goldwater, would have recognized.

Conservative political philosophy has been replaced with racist and classist resentments. Donald Trump is President because he is very good at exploiting those resentments. In that sense, and that sense only, he has channelledand perfectedNixon.

Injustice, Intolerance and Intimidation in the Making of a ‘Hindu … – The Wire

Featured The struggle to punish the killers of Pansare, Kalburgi and Dabholkaris linked to the struggle to preserve democracy in India, says Pansaresdaughter.

The veteran rationalist thinker, writer and communist leader Govind Pansare was brutally assassinated in Kolhapur on February 20, 2015. More than two years have passed, but justice remains elusive. The same is true for Narendra Dabholkar and M.M. Kalburgi, whose second death anniversary is three months away. All three men were also killed by right-wing fundamentalists.

The investigations into the assassinations have been very slow and have moved only because theDabholkar and Pansare families have petitionedthe high court to monitor the investigation. The police have managed to arrest only two suspects so far and two have been absconding. All the accused are associated with the radical Hindutva organisations Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janjagriti Samiti, with their totally unconstitutional agenda of establishing a Hindu Rashtra in the country.

The chargesheets filed by the police in the Dabholkar and Pansare cases clearly mention that the accused are absconding since the Margao bomb explosion case in Goa in 2009. In spite of objections on the pressure tactics used by the lawyers of the accused and the spokespersons of Sanatan Sanstha, no action has been taken against them. The state government has not yet declared the absconding suspects as wanted in the Pansare case. The investigation officer is changed at every interval and the activists demand to hand over the case to a dedicated team for investigation is also pending with the government.

Fundamentalism has no religion

It is really painful to define justice in cases where people are killed because their ideology and expression of thought are not acceptable to some. Regardless of political affiliation, the government seems to be insensitive in solving these crimes and punishing the guilty. Not even a single arrest has been made in Kalburgis case yet.

Fundamentalism and fanaticism is not a characteristic feature of any specific religion. Farook Hameed, a young activist of theDravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK), was killed by Muslim fundamentalists onMarch 17, 2017 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The DVK is an offshoot of the Dravidar Kazhagam founded by Periyar in the 1940s and propagates atheism and rationalism. Being an atheist in individual life is something accepted by the society, but it seems one cannot propagate atheism the way others propagate a religious faith without risking ones life. Farook openly expressed his ideology. He had posted comments about atheism, criticising religion and caste on his Facebook page. He was the administrator of a WhatsApp group called Allah Murdad, meaning There is no God. The result: he was killed, reports say, by his own friends. Farooks murderis infact a threat to allMuslim youths who embrace atheism or even rationalism.

The Coimbatore incident is, in essence, no different from those where the victimsbelonged to the Hindu religion and were killed by Hindu fanatics.

Shrinking freedoms

The situation in India is growing more complex by the day. The space for free expression and freedom is shrinking rapidly. The fascist forces are trying to shut voices of freedom and we are compelled to fight the battle in the available space.

The campaign of returning awards by the writers and scientists brought the anxiety of intellectuals before society. They were concerned about everything that is going against the principle of equality, freedom of expression, cultural diversity and secular values in our nation. There have been three yatras, or journeys, of writers and poets to express solidarity with the families of Pansare, Dabholkar and Kalburgi so far. The first was a part of the Dakshinayan campaign in which 14 eminent writers from Gujarat visited Pune, Kolhapur and Dharwad, where the three rationalists were killed. Then a team of Marathi writers and activists followed the same route during their journey to Goa for a national conference in defence of freedom of expression held in November, 2016. In February 2017, 11 members of the Progressive Writers Association, Madhya Pradesh travelled to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. They condemned the respective governments for failing to arrestthe killers. Based on their dialogue with local people in these regions and their experiences, they will write books, plays and hold discussions to spread their thoughts across the Hindi speaking belt.

As the atmosphere of fear and intimidation grows, hundreds of writers and artists visited the historical place of Dandi, Gujarat to hold a silent protest march on January 30, 2016 to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. A platform of collective voices of the left and Dalit movement was created in Mumbai Collective, while Delhi observed Pratirodh I and II with a clear stand to enjoy the right to dissent and free expression. The progressive forces in many towns, small and big, in the country have started organising programs like seminars, book publications and poetry recitations to protestagainst the attacks on women, minorities, progressive people and Dalit communities.

Criminalising rights

The atmosphere of fear exists, not only because of fundamentalist violence, but also because ofthe criminalisation of peaceful expression. Many have been attacked by the self-appointed nationalists and so-called religious people, while many from the minority communities, especially youth, have been arrested, held in pre-trial detention, and subjected to extensive criminal trials by the government machinery.

Fear of such repression, combined with uncertainty as to how the statutes will be applied, leads others to engage in self-censorship. Stategovernments areusing draconian laws such as the sedition provisions of the penal code, the criminal defamation law and laws dealing with hate speech to silence dissent. These laws have been repeatedly used for political purposes against critics.

There have been major attacks on free speech in the country from the government itself. The information and broadcasting ministry under the BJP government has become an image manager for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The governments advisory to news channels not to telecast the Nirbhaya documentary and serving a legal notice to the BBC for airing the Nirbhaya film Indias Daughter, issuing show cause notices to channels on Yakub Memons execution coverage, banning a documentary on beef all of this tell their own story. The BJP government has crushed the resistance of the students from the Film and Television Institute of India against the appointment of a pro-BJP director and has charged JNU students with sedition. It has appointed RSS affiliated people in various academic institutes. There have been cases of deaths of journalists, intellectuals, attacks, arrests, threats, sedition, defamation and censorship of films, broadcast media, print media, music, cyber media and hate speech. The attempt to imposea one-day ban on NDTV India, the filing of a complaint against an Outlook investigation on child trafficking in Assam, the trumped up casesagainsthuman rights activists in Bastar, are all attempts to silence the media and the voices of democratic dissent. Reporters covering the courts have been assaulted by lawyers, taken into police custody and their access to the courts restricted.

The bigger picture

The time has come for thinkers, writers, poets, artists, scientists to overcome this feeling of intimidation and regenerate the society. Thinkers can become an explosive, powerful force. We have seen some examples in our freedom struggle, in Revolutionary Russia, Latin America and Africa. We have seen recently in India that the individual writers chose their timing of dissent in tandem with other fellow writers. Their act wasnt solitary, but in solidarity with others.

At such a crucial time it will be unfortunate, if the real thinkers stop writing or speaking or expressing their views. The active thinkers can awaken society, create standards of morality, humanism and honesty and preserve them. The absence of thinkers causes civilisations to collapse. We have been observing thisdecay with our own eyes. The process of decaying has taken alarming speed. Make the people think aptly at individual, collective level and at the level of small groups is the first step. To create a live internal debate is the second and going to the people and thinking together, is the third.

We have seen Russel taking a stand against war, we have seen Sartre taking a stand against the US in Vietnam, and we have seen Chomsky and many others taking a stand against the aggressive foreign policy of America. Many writers opposed Francos dictatorship. We have seen and heard Dabholkar, Pansare and Kalburgi doing this during many social campaigns. We have seen them expressing their views fearlessly throughout their lives. The strategy to fight the battle with right-wing forces, in Pansares words, is shatru-mitra vivek (atru-bandhu bibka). Theregressive forces arein power not because they have support from the majority of people, but because the progressive forces are scattered and not united. The union of the left and Dalit movement can challenge the communal forces in power, he used to say.

So, if now the government at the Centre says that people should sacrifice their desire for justice and truth in the national interest, in the name of nationalism and patriotism, it should be opposed. If there are forces, which declare that Indiawill be a Hindu Rashtra by 2023 or 2025, they should be opposed. For this is a secular nation and will remain secular. This is a democratic nation and will remain so.

‘In The Modern Day World, People Who Need Feminism Don’t Even Know About It’ – Youth Ki Awaaz

Posted: at 2:14 pm

By Rishita Deshmukh:

On a fine Sunday evening, teenagers, or what we call the youth of our nation, assembled over the vanity of a cup of tea to have a contested discussion about feminism. The advocacy of womens rights on the grounds of the equality of the sexes, is how Google defines feminism. But is feminism only about a discrete gender? How does the concept of feminism, one of the firstinstances of which occurred in France in the 14th century, differ from the knowledge of feminism in the 21st century? Is feminism only about the equality of two genders or is there more underneath it? All of these questions were reinvigorated at the caf discussion that took place at Bees Caf, Aundh on May 21, 2017.

A collective of students, who are organising a Model UN conference, came up with an initiative to bring about a change with the influence of speech. This resulted in an informal discussion about concerned topics, where everyone could voice out their opinions and solutions, which could then be worked upon.

The event started with an address by the co-founders of Omega MUN, followed by a word from the moderator of the event, who acted non-partisan in the entire event, harmonising the atmosphere. To ease up the ambience, everyone got acquainted with one another. After a few rules were explained regarding the conduct of the talk, the discussion kicked in.

While setting up the foundation of the tower named feminism, it was compared to how feminism was in the early ages. Over a period of time, the definition of feminism has expanded. In the 21st century, feminism isnt restrictive to a particular gender. The idea of feminism has differed with time. It has become more of a movement and less of a concept about women and men having an equal stance. The basic impression is equality and hence the need to have a definition that seals both empowerment, as well as the equality of women, was looked upon.

One amongst the audience gave an example of the brand Kinderjoy, a candy selling company who have different toys for boys and girls. This brought up the fact how business industries use stereotypes in their own lucrative way.

For a really long time, the world has been patriarchal, which has given rise to aggressive rationalism stated a young teen, from the audience. While some people believed there was no negative side to feminism, part of them believed feminism, being an ideology, has an extreme stance which can be undesirable. Supporting this argument, it was said that the idea of feminism has become distorted and that aspects of feminism have become about hating men.

To make a non-aligned argument, the moderator pointed out that, Feminism is not wrong as a concept, but when implemented it can be perceived in a wrong way. To validate this point, an incident in the Indian Parliament was brought up. One of the members of Parliament was breastfeeding her child while attending to the ministers. This particular incident was interpreted differently. Some said she wanted to prove a point, that she could be amother as well as a worker at the same time.

Contrary to this, it was said that maternity leave should be given in order to avoid such clashes. Feminism was said to be a subjective ideology which was perceived differently in diverse places. It was argued in the audience that when feminism was first initiated, it was about getting women their rightful position in society and other various rights. However, now it has become an aggressive movement where women want to manifest themselves as greater than men.

In the modern day world, people who need feminism dont even know about it. In rural areas, most women are unaware of their rights, commented a 16-year old participant. A lot of times, society cringes at the visual of a male working in the kitchen and a female working in the office. Why do we need such social norms? Right from the grassroots level, we have such stereotypes which are influencing young psyches. These orthodox thoughts are embedded deep in our values, right from the very start. One of the boys in the room stated that 21% of schools in India are convent schools which separate girls and boys into different sets. From the very beginning, they have been estranged and this stereotype is rooted in our culture. Challenging the status quo is what the moderator quotes. Further adding to it, a mutual point is made by everyone saying, Law views everyone as equal, its society who sees it differently.

As the discussion shifted to the norms of society, the audience talked about certain topics which are considered taboo in our society. For example, sex education, which is not highly recognised in any of the schools but is of utmost importance. Usually, it includes escorting girls into different rooms and explaining the various prospects of their body. Everyone in the room agreed to the fact that whatever happens to our body is completely natural and that one must not be reluctant to talk about it. Hence, they urged schools to prioritise sex education and openly discuss it in the assembly of both boys and girls.

As people voiced out their opinions about the same, there was a shift in the atmosphere and the argument lead to a very controversial aspect of feminism: Religion. The audience perked up and a mutual consent towards Islam was observed. The question was asked whether women, when given a choice, would refuse to wear a hijab. Someone pointed out that women who wear the hijab had been brought up to follow the conduct no matter what. This point was countered by stating that according to the Quran, women are not supposed to go out of the house without their head covered. And even men wear a white cap over their heads all the time. Summing up one side of the argument, a speaker said, Islam is the safest religion for women. Countering the declaration, a boy from the crowd shared his experience of the time he used to live in Saudi Arabia. He said, It was mandatory for my mother, who isnt a Muslim, to wear a hijab. Women there arent allowed to drive a car alone. Whenever a woman wants to buy groceries, a minimum of 10 other women must be ather side.

Were drawn back to the era when feminism started. In Europe France, to be precise. In those days, women werent considered to be tough enough to cut wood which led to themdoing all the household chores while men did the physically hard labour. Hence it turned out to be, what the speaker quotes as, generic nature, for a man to earn money and a woman to spend the same currency. A typical understanding of people is that girls are soft, they like pink and boys are tough, they like blue. This entire argument leads the audience to one conclusion, People are confused between feminism and womens rights. Rights are human and are meant for both men and women.

Further, everyone agreed that no matter what, there are going to be natural inequalities between men and women which will make them different from each other. Before men and female, we are humans, quoted one of the participants from the audience. As the discussion shifted, our question, Is feminism only about two genders? was attended. Men are oppressing women and but this oppression intersects with the oppression faced by LGBTQ people. Feminism preaches equality and hence it should cover all genders. Subsidiaries should be given to trans people.

Here we came to a substantive part of the conversation. What part can we play in making a change? How can we give a new perspective to people? Education all of these values must be taught from a very young age. Awareness let the implementation begin from our families and friends. A participant from the discussion talks about the situation of her maid who wants to marry off her daughter of 13 years. The participant says, My maid doesnt listen to me, neither does she take advice from my mother. What should I do? This situation is provided with solutions like counselling, therapies, reporting to the authorities, spreading awareness.

Another major aspect is introduced in the talk: Reservation. There is a separate coach for women in the Delhi metro and yet they demand seats in the other compartment as well. A woman says, I am not weak but still claims special treatment. While stating statistics, someone pointed out that women have 5% reservation in educational institutes. To this, another candidate says, The reason why they have reservations is because their parents consider them as a liability. Reservation should be given to only them who require it. However, this point is countered by another, who says, India is a diverse country, there cannot be particular criteria for reservation. Women of upper classes live the life of rural people due to certain stereotypes and social norms. Therefore, we must attend to them who are benefiting from the laws rather than the ones misusing it

It is believed that change has started, and gradually in the years to come, well see the results. The government has taken initiatives regarding these issues. Another issue discussed was the conversion of buses into restrooms for women to use. These buses would be parked on the roadside for the benefit of women. There are NGOs who are working for the betterment of women. A lot of celebrities, who have their tours in west Asia and Latin America, boost the idea of feminism through their concerts.

Change is a gradual process and will not happen overnight. As we evolve, we take one step towards making a difference. Omega MUN strives to do the same through small talks, which would help make a bigger change. It isnt just a conference, it is a step towards giving a meaning to the MUN circuit of Pune. It is a way of building credibility through discussion. With an effective team of organisers, Omega Club is set to make this world a better place. A simple e-mail about your ideas and your contribution for developing a greater society will be appreciated. Omega MUN intends to create a chain reaction, connecting thousands of people in the process. They say, The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Our main motive behind this caf discussion is to revolutionise Punes MUN circuit. These caf discussions will help people develop their oratory skills and be confident while they speak. We seek to enrich public speaking skills, says Sarthak Vij, co-founder of Omega MUN, a 17-year old commerce student.

I think the main motive being Omega TeaTalks is to give people an opportunity to discuss issues of global as well as local significance. Often, there are certain things society negates as taboo, and with Omega TeaTalks, were hoping to give people a chance to discuss unconventional issues, and also to interact with different people with different opinions, says Ashwath Narayana, founder of Omega MUN, another 17-year-old literature freak.

Portland mayor urges scrapping of pro-Trump free speech rally – CBS News

Posted: at 2:13 pm

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The man police say fatally stabbed two other men who tried to shield young women from an anti-Muslim tirade on a Portland, Oregon, light-rail train is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Monday, and the city's mayor says he hopes the slayings will inspire "changes in the political dialogue in this country."

Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, faces two counts of felony aggravated murder and other charges.

The attack happened Friday, the first day of Ramadan, the holiest time of the year for Muslims. Authorities say Christian started verbally abusing two young women, including one wearing a hijab. Three other men on the train intervened before police say Christian attacked them, killing two and wounding one.

President Donald Trump condemned the stabbings, writing Monday on Twitter: "The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable. The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance. Our prayers are w/ them."

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he appreciated Mr. Trump's words but stressed the need for action. Wheeler urged organizers to cancel a "Trump Free Speech Rally" in Portland and other similar events next weekend, saying they are inappropriate and could be dangerous.

"I hope we rise to the memory of these two gentlemen who lost their lives," the mayor told reporters. "Let's do them honor by standing with them and carrying on their legacy of standing up to hate and bigotry and violence."

Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53, were killed as they tried to stop the harassment.

Christian's social media postings indicate an affinity for Nazis and political violence. He is accused of aggravated murder, intimidation - the state equivalent of a hate crime - and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Christian served prison time after holding up employees at a convenience store with a gun in 2002, court records show. Telephone messages left at the home of Christian's mother Sunday and Monday were not returned. It was not clear if he had a lawyer yet.

Police Sgt. Pete Simpson told CBS News Christian attended a free speech march in April with a baseball bat to confront protesters but the bat was quickly confiscated by officers.

Christian went into a racist tirade on a train the night before the deadly attack, police confirmed toCBS affiliate KOIN. It was caught on video.

The Portland Mercury, one of the city's alternative weeklies, posted an article with video clips of a man wearing a metal chain around his neck and draped in an American flag. "He ranted how he was a nihilist. He'd soon yelled racial slurs ... and gave the Nazi salute throughout the day," the Portland Mercury says.

On what appears to be Christian's Facebook page he showed sympathy for Nazis and Timothy McVeigh, whobombed a federal building in Oklahoma Cityin 1995.Portland spent the holiday weekend memorializing the victims.

The mother of one of the targets of the rant said she was overwhelmed with gratitude and sadness for the strangers who died defending her daughter, 16-year-old Destinee Mangum.

Mangum told news station KPTV that she and her 17-year-old friend were riding the train when Christian started yelling at them. She said her friend is Muslim, but she's not.

"He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia, and he told us we shouldn't be here, to get out of his country," Mangum said. "He was just telling us that we basically weren't anything and that we should kill ourselves."

The FBI is looking into possible hate crime charges against a man accused of stabbing two men to death on a Portland train. Police say the victim...

The teens moved toward the back of the train, preparing to get off at the next stop.

"And then we turned around while they were fighting, and he just started stabbing people, and it was just blood everywhere, and we just started running for our lives," Mangum said.

Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, was stabbed in the neck. His girlfriend, Miranda Helm, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he was recovering his strength in the hospital.

A Facebook page for the Trump Free Speech Rally says there would be speakers and live music in "one of the most liberal areas on the West Coast." It says it will feature Kyle Chapman, who describes himself as an American nationalist and ardent supporter of Mr. Trump.

Chapman was arrested at a March 4 protest in Berkeley, the birthplace of the U.S. free speech movement in the 1960s that has become a flashpoint for the extreme left and right since Trump's election.

The University of California, Berkeley, has been criticized for canceling an appearance by conservative commentator Ann Coulter in April and another by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos in February. It canceled Coulter's speech amid threats of violence, fearing a repeat of rioting ahead of the Yiannopoulos event.

Wheeler's call for the rally to be canceled comes amid a wider debate in the U.S. about the First Amendment, often in liberal cities like Portland and Berkeley, California, and on college campuses, where violent protests between far-right and far-left protesters have derailed appearances by contentious figures.

Portland mayor wants ‘Trump free speech’ rally canceled after attack – The Hill

Posted: at 2:13 pm

The mayor of Portland, Ore., is calling for a "Trump free speech rally" to be canceled after a man directing anti-Muslim rhetoric at two women fatally stabbed two men and injured a third this weekend, according toThe Associated Press.

Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said he's worried that attendees of the proposed rally and other similar events could "peddle a message of hatred," the AP reported.

A Facebook page for the rally said speakers will include Kyle Chapman, who describes himself as an American nationalist and is an ardent President Trump supporter.

A federal permit has been given for the rally on Saturday, but the government hasn't yet issued a permit for an event planned for June 10, according to the AP.

"There will be speakers exercising their free speech, live music, flags, and an uplifting experience to bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom," according to the Facebook event page for Saturday's rally.
