Washington Nationals: CF Michael Taylor still struggling with plate … – OutsidePitchMLB

When Adam Eaton went down with a season-ending injury, Michael Taylor was called upon to play center field every day for the Washington Nationals. The team didnt really have any other choice other than Taylor. So far, he has done an admirable job filling in with exception to his plate discipline.
Since taking over full-time, Taylor has hit with (some) power and delivered on defense. His eye at the plate remains the Achilles heel in his offensive game.
Through his first 117 at-bats, Taylor has drawn only six walks. To make matters worse, he has a team-leading 44 strikeouts.
Poor plate discipline has been an issue throughout Taylors big league career. When the Nationals played him regularly in 2015, the now 26-year-old fanned an unacceptable 158 times. He struck out another 77 times last season in far fewer at-bats. If the Nationals didnt call up Trea Turner to play center field, Taylor would have surely fanned a lot more.
Through parts of four big league seasons, the Nationals center fielder is averaging 178 strikeouts per 162 games. He is also averaging only 35 base on balls per 162 games. As a result, he has a pitiful .283 OBP.
Taylors offensive abilities were already limited. Hes not the kind of player who appears capable of hitting for a high batting average. Players like this need to make up for it with an excessive amount of walks.
Young players striking out often and not getting on base via walks is contagious in the Nationals lineup. Turner has suffered the same fate. Its a problem for many MLB freshmen. The major difference between Taylor and Turner is the former has been consistently bad at this four several seasons. Turners high strikeout/low walk ratio is brand new.
No other season has been as important as this one for Taylors future. He barely cracked the Opening Day roster. With one outfield spot presumably open next year, he has a chance to increase his playing time exponentially.
To that same end, if the strikeouts persist and the walks stay absent, Taylor may forever lose his chance at starting regularly.

In a stunning upset, the nine-member jury led by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and including Hollywood stars Jessica Chastain and Will Smith awarded the trophy to the movies director, Ruben Ostlund.
Oh my God, oh my God! Ostlund shouted from the stage after besting a raft of favourites for one of global cinemas most coveted honours.
In a 70th anniversary edition marked by raging debate over sexism in the movie industry, Sofia Coppola became only the second woman in history to win best director for her battle-of-the-sexes thriller The Beguiled with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.
Kidman, who appeared in four different projects at the festival, accepted a special 70th anniversary award from the jury.
Diane Kruger clinched best actress for her first film role in her native German as a devastated mother who has lost her family in a Hamburg terror attack, in Fatih Akins In the Fade.
I cannot accept this award without thinking of everyone who has been touched by an act of terrorism you have not been forgotten, the clearly moved actress said.
Three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix nabbed best actor for his turn as a hammer-wielding hitman in the ultraviolent thriller You Were Never Really Here.
Any work that I did was linked to the work of Lynne Ramsay, the films British director, Phoenix said, before apologising for his tuxedo-and-trainers look at the gala ceremony.
I dont wear leather, the committed vegetarian explained.
So much courage
Greeces Yorgos Lantimos shared the best screenplay award with Ramsay for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, an icy thriller set in a wealthy American suburb and starring Kidman and Farrell.
The runner-up Grand Prix went to moving French drama 120 Beats Per Minute about the radical activists who helped shame the world into action on AIDS.
This film is an homage to those who died but also those who survived and are still alive, who had so much courage, said the movies director, former ACT UP member Robin Campillo.
Campillo also wrote the screenplay for The Class, a drama about a multicultural Paris high school that scooped the Palme dOr in 2008 as well as an Oscar nomination.
Loveless by Andrey Zvyagintsev, a wrenching drama about moral rot eating away at Russian society under Vladimir Putin, took the third place jury prize.
Magic of big screen
The Square, coming in at two hours and 20 minutes, is an often hilarious art world satire exploring creative liberty, free speech and the blurred lines between the sexes.
Danish actor Claes Bang plays a museum director and divorced father of two young daughters who finds himself in an increasingly absurd set of predicaments.
The movie features Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Dominic West (The Wire) in small roles viciously lampooning the self-important art world.
One set-piece featuring a wild, bare-chested man performing as an ape wreaking havoc at a posh gala dinner entered festival legend.
Cannes 12 days of screenings and celebrity-packed soirees which were somewhat muted by the Manchester bombing were marked by unprecedented anti-terror measures and a raging row over how technology is shaping the future of the movie industry.
Netflix had two movies in competition for the first time but faced blowback from critics who argue that online streaming is destroying cinema distribution and with it the magic of the big-screen experience.

Alabama Won’t Let ‘Political Correctness’ Destroy Its Confederate Monuments – VICE
Posted: at 2:33 pm
It doesn't look like Alabama will be getting rid of its Confederate monuments anytime soon. Rather than join New Orleans in tearing down the symbols, Governor Kay Ivey signed legislation this week aimed at protecting that state's statues from being taken down, including one at the capitol, the Hill reports.
The GOP-backed bill, which was sponsored by State Senator Gerald Allen, would block local municipalities from removing any public statue that's stood for at least 40 years. It would also prohibit anyone from changing the name of any public school that's been around for four decades. According to the Hill, the new law will protect nine standing confederate monuments in the state.
The call for Southern states to remove their existing Confederate imagery ramped up after a self-proclaimed white supremacist gunned down nine black church parishioners in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015. Since then, a few Southern states have removed the Confederate flag from their state houses and license plates, but the fight to bring down monuments remains heated.
City workers received death threats before taking down four monuments in New Orleans in recent weeks, and a bunch of people brought torches to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in Virginia earlier this month. One Republican lawmaker in Mississippia state that features the stars and bars on its state flagsaid this week that people removing the monuments "should be lynched."
Many lawmakers, civil rights advocates, and regular citizens see the monuments and flags as offensive reminders of America's shameful racist past.
"These monuments purposefully celebrate a fictional, sanitized Confederacy; ignoring the death, ignoring the enslavement, and the terror that it actually stood for," New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu said in a speech following the city's monument removal. "To literally put the Confederacy on a pedestal in our most prominent places of honor is an inaccurate recitation of our full past, it is an affront to our present, and it is a bad prescription for our future."
But in Alabama, lawmakers like Gerald Allen apparently care more about ending what he's called a "wave of political correctness" currently making its way around the country.
"Where does it end?" Allen asked. "Are all parts of American history subject to purging, until every Ivy League professor is satisfied and the American story has been re-written as nothing but a complete fraud and a betrayal of our founding values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?"

Investigators say debit card-cloning ring was operating on South … – The Patriot Ledger
Posted: at 2:33 pm
Neal Simpson The Patriot Ledger @nsimpson_ledger
BOSTON - Federal investigators say a major debit card-cloning ring operating in eight U.S. states and three countries was able to steal thousands of dollars from people using ATMs on the South Shore before it was shut down earlier this year.
In a federal indictment unsealed last week, investigators said a group dubbed the Hornea Crew had used skimming devices installed at ATMs in Quincy, Braintree and Weymouth to get access to peoples accounts and fraudulently withdraw their money. Fourteen people linked to the operation have been indicted on charges including identity theft, money laundering and racketeering, and investigators say more people were involved, including minors.
In an affidavit filed with the indictment, investigators said the operation was run by two brothers, Constantin Denis Hornea and Ludemis Hornea, and included members of several other families, some of them linked by marriage. Investigators said the network had been active in states up and down the East Coast as well as in China and Romania.
Constantin Hornea and a woman believed to be his wife, Maria Lazar, were arrested in March after investigators said they used cloned debit cards to fraudulently withdraw money from several Bank of America ATMs, including at bank branches and vestibules in Hanover, Braintree and Weymouth. Investigators said the couple withdrew between $100 and $500 at a time.
At the time, investigators said they did not yet know who installed the devices that were used to produce the cloned cards, according to a complaint unsealed after the couples arrest. Investigators said the cards were produced with the use of two devices: A skimmer stalled in an ATM slot that reads the account numbers of cards inserted into it; and a camera that records ATM users entering their PIN numbers on the machines keypad. Investigators said one batch of cloned debit cards was made using skimmers installed at a Bank of America ATM at 1 Scammell St. in Quincy.
Hornea's alleged associates, including some charged with installing the skimmers and cameras, were indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston. The indictment was unsealed Thursday after his brother, Ludemis Hornea, was arrested.
In the indictment unsealed Thursday, investigators said the banks targeted by the group include Bank of America, Citizens Bank, First Citizens Bank, SunTrust Bank and Wells Fargo. Investigators said fraudulent cards were used to withdraw money at ATMs across Massachusetts, including in Brockton, Hanover, Quincy, Rockland and Weymouth.
Constantin Hornea and Maria Lazar are due to be arraigned Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston. They have been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals since their arrest this spring.

Could medical push for human cloning change the tide of public opinion? – CosmicNovo.com (Science and Technology)
Posted: at 2:33 pm
From a scientific stand point cloning happens every day, let it be through the replication of cells, plant propagation or certain types of asexual reproduction; however, it is human cloning that usually ignites a fierce debate. From both an ethical and moral standpoint, human cloning has always raised several issues regarding the reasons and motivations behind it. Whilst religion is often the barrier for many opposing cloning, there have been many arguments from secular interest groups as well.
Like other forms of unnatural science, such as In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and stem cell research, human cloning has its fair share of advocates. Although it may be unfair to compare the cloning debate to IVF treatment and stem cell research, they all have several key similarities from an argumentative standpoint. All deemed to be relatively ethically dubious from a religious perspective, secular groups argue that scientists shouldnt be able to alter what would be considered a natural part of life.
Opinions change however, after the initial uproar over IVF and the potential for individuals to alter genes to design their child to their liking, it has become more popular as it became seen as a way for couples unable to have children to get pregnant safely. Advocates for cloning are using the same argument to help change public opinion, as they explain that for many, cloning could be the only option to have a child, albeit an expensive fraught with a litany of issues that cross from ethical to legal.
That being said, that side of the debate may be the hardest one to argue. On the other hand, human cloning, specifically body parts, is garnering additional support from the medical field. Doctors are beginning to see the advantages of human cloning, as a spate of breakthroughs has shown that we are nearing the ability to replicate or clone specific body parts or tissue. From a medical perspective, doctors and researchers are seeing this as realistic and viable option for transplant patients, one that would revolutionize the healthcare sector.
In this case, cloning, like stem cell research, could be a major breakthrough in how we treat patients with a wide range of issues. However, there is still one overarching argument that remains: Should scientists and doctors have a say in how nature plays its course? A Darwinist would say that this type of technology would be essentially altering natural selection, and could eventually lead to complications from an evolutionary perspective, but is this the logical progression of human technology, or a line that shouldnt be crossed?

Evolution on the fast laneOne flounder species became two – Phys.Org
Posted: at 2:32 pm
May 30, 2017 Flounders with different spawning behaviors are two species with distinct evolutionary histories. Credit: left: Mats Westerbom. right: Alf Norkko.
A research group at the University of Helsinki discovered the fastest event of speciation in any marine vertebrate when studying flounders in an international research collaboration project. This finding has an important implication on how we understand evolution in the sea.
The researchers found out the pace at which two groups of flounders in the Baltic Sea became distinct species had been extraordinarily fast, approximately 2400 generations. This is by far the fastest event of speciation in any marine vertebrate to date.
"This is possibly one of the best examples of ecological speciation, that is the process by which selection generates new species, in the marine environment because the species evolved by adapting to different ecological niches, rather than by being separated by geographic barriers for a very long time," says Paolo Momigliano, post-doctoral researcher from the Ecological Genetics Research Unit.
What makes this finding important is that in the marine environment barriers to dispersal are rarely absolute, in other words currents can move larvae around and adult fish swim around. Hence, models of speciation which can act in the absence of complete geographical isolation, such as ecological speciation, have likely played an important role in the evolution of marine biodiversity. Yet, to date, evidence of ecological speciation in the sea is scarce.
"Our study has important implications on how we understand evolution in the sea," confirms Momigliano.
There are new interesting questions for the researchers to solve, such as how are species arising, in some cases at a speed that once would have been thought to be unimaginably fast.
"The answer may lay in so called magic traits, meaning traits that are under selection which at the same time cause reproductive isolation as a byproduct. In theory, selection on such traits could play a central role in rapid speciation events. The mating strategies and reproductive traits of the two flounder species could act as magic traits," clarifies Momigliano.
As the study confirms that there are two species of flounders instead of one, how can you distinguish them from each other?
"They are morphologically nearly indistinguishable but have different spawning behaviors and adaptations. Both species winter in deeper waters and feed in shallow coastal waters in the summer. In spring, however, one species spawns pelagic eggs in deep water basins, where salinity is high enough and eggs can become neutrally buoyant. The second species spawns smaller, but tougher, eggs in shallow coastal waters. These differences have been known for some time, but only now we realize that flounders with different spawning behaviors are two species with distinct evolutionary histories," describes Momigliano.
The flounders are economically important for fishing and their numbers have declined markedly on the Finnish coast. Today, the percentage of pelagic flounders is very small on the Finnish coast, but an ongoing research suggests that in the 1970s and 1980s they made up the majority of the population. The pelagic flounders could not have spawned successfully on the Finnish coast because they require higher salinity. They were probably spawned in the south when conditions were more suitable, and transported to the Finnish coast by the currents. I.e. the Finnish coast was a sink population for the southern type of flounders, much as was the case for cods during the same period. Today we almost exclusively get the demersal species.

Again, and evident cheat to try to "validate' "evolution". The claim that the two flounders constitute two different species. To be sure, they likely do mate in different areas, have eggs that thrive under different conditions, but that could be a case of two genetic predispositions, like what are termed "phases", in the one population. If sperm from one group of fish were placed into eggs from the other "phase", whether they produce sexually viable offspring will indicate if they are separate species or not. Frankly, if they are all still flounder, they are technically all the same.

Speed of animal evolution enhanced by cooperative behaviour – Phys.Org
Posted: at 2:32 pm
May 29, 2017 by Stuart Roberts Credit: University of Cambridge
A study by scientists from the University of Cambridge has revealed how cooperative behaviour between insect family members changes how rapidly body size evolves with the speed of evolution increasing when individual animals help one another.
Cooperative behaviour is a key part of animal family life: parents help offspring by supplying them with food, and siblings can also work together to acquire food. The Cambridge study, published today in Nature Ecology and Evolution, looked at the burying beetle unusual in the insect world as the parents feed their offspring.
Larvae in small broods are well supplied with food by their parents and grow large. In the parents' absence, larvae can also help each other to forage for food. However, in the absence of their parents, small broods of larvae are less effective at helping each other and can never grow as big.
"For our study, we played the role of natural selection. In some experimental beetle populations, we chose only the largest beetles to breed at each generation and in some we chose only the smallest beetles," said Benjamin Jarrett from the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge, who led the study.
"Crucially, we also changed the social conditions within beetle families. In some populations, we allowed parents to help their offspring, but in other populations we removed the parents, and larvae had to help each other. We found that the social conditions made a big difference to how quickly beetle body size evolves over generations."
Beetles only evolved a larger body size when parents were present to help rear their young. In stark contrast, smaller body size only evolved when beetle parents were removed, and there were too few larvae to help each other.
The experiment helps explain how different species of burying beetle might have evolved their different body sizes. In general, larger species of beetle have more diligent parents than smaller species.
Burying beetles use the dead body of a small animal, like a mouse or bird, for reproduction. The parents shave and bury the carcass, to make it into an edible nest for their larvae. The larvae can feed themselves on the carrion, but the parent beetles also regurgitate partly digested food to them. The species used in this study has quite variable levels of parental care: occasionally larvae have to fend for themselves on the carcass because they have been abandoned by their parents.
"Previous work has focused on the puzzle of how cooperative behaviour evolves, because natural selection seems to favour animals that are selfish," said Professor Rebecca Kilner, who is senior author of this paper. "We have shown that what happens next, in evolutionary terms, is just as interesting. Once cooperation has evolved, it can change the way in which evolution then unfolds."
The researchers now hope to uses experimental evolution to understand what happens across many generations when changing the extent of parental care.
"We can remove parents from caring for their offspring in one generation, and we do this to their offspring too, and their grandoffspring, and so on," added Jarrett. "We currently have populations of beetles that have not had parents looking after them as they grow up for 25 generations.
"What this does is change what evolution is working on. Natural selection is usually acting on the combination of parents and offspring, and now, by removing parents, we have changed the traits on which evolution acts."

Pheromones effect more rapid evolution.
care to link some studies to support that one?
Cap'n, is this the first time you've encountered Bubba? He's a classic crackpot. Just read a few of his posts and discover his singular fixation.
methinks that once we start seeing source material and the choices made we can narrow down the person behind the sock
Ross Nicholson, though often writes under B. Nicholson. Unfortunately if you press him for evidence, he will link to his own material, including his own self-published book.
No one has ever asked for references. All species ever studied rely upon pheromones to ascertain their numbers, determine resources, and regulate their fertility, including human beings. Humans have the largest and most active scent glands of any species. (Montagna, Sakolov (sp?)) Scents are why pubic hair is curly. Human pheromones contain chemicals which mark us as human beings. Sebaleic acid is found nowhere else in nature. (Nicolaides, N. Science Jan 1974) Sapienic acid is almost as rare. Pheromones are species specific and components are synergistic, just like: fish oil. Only fools believe that human beings have some innate need for deep sea fish oil. I think human beings need to kiss each other to get almost exactly the same chemicals from human skin surfaces. Harpies have no chemistry, they're religious believers that "bad thinking causes disease" which is obviously impossible to disprove. There are thousands of annotated facts in my book. Study it.
a book is not a study
i am not asking for anecdote nor your personal belief because that means you're promoting a faith, not science
you are on a science site making blanket statements that i am saying are wrong - so prove your point with evidence
and by evidence i mean reputable peer reviewed journal studies that can be replicated and thus validated
.
otherwise you're no different than any other religious crank
.
.
.
and so far it's not helping that bubba thinks a book of anecdote is somehow equivalent to a journal study...
Principia was self published. There's no stigma. This format allows only 1000 characters to get the basics across. There are thousands of references, yes, Montagna and Parakal, 1984, discusses curly hair in scent dissemination. Yes, the upper and middle meati have erectile tissues that engorge during intercourse and deflate on intromission. The same erectile tissues block upper and middle meati (where most smell takes place) with anger (obviously to prevent auto reception of pheromone). The reference to the otolaryngologist who scoped his wife during intercourse and also when she got mad at him is included. I saw the same thing in my studies. Indeed, I discovered that upper & middle meati ALWAYS move air front to back, never in reverse except at high velocity: sneezes. I used plastic models made from cadavers, & no, I don't have a personality. Neither do you. A couple of you (children perhaps? Who knows who you are?) mock me from anonymity. Read the book 1st. Then mock.
Sorry, I don't know how to make links. A lot of people believing something does not make it true. For instance, today is not "Tuesday", that is merely a consensus of opinion. Actually, there's nothing Tuesday about today, is there? There is no such thing as a personality, there are no "psychological" states. There is no such thing as an ego. Self concepts do not exist. There is a lot of work involved in disabusing oneself of such religious notions. From my perusing this site, which is useful to me occasionally, very few have done the work of confirmation needed to differentiate what is known vs what is merely assumed from consensus. Socratic logic can be helpful, but even Socrates' axioms cannot stand against experimental evidence to the contrary, if valid.
you have yet to provide any reputable evidence other than "because you say so"
even the text would be usable to the most basic internet literate user as you can copy/paste it back to the browser
read all 16 boxes and consider it before replying with yet another pheromone claim, especially considering the above link i presented showing there is, and i quote:" there is no robust bioassay-led evidence for the widely published claims that four steroid molecules are human pheromones: androstenone, androstenol, androstadienone and estratetraenol."
.
so your continued posting of pheromone BS is called faith, or belief, not science
Admittedly, some things I accept as true may be mere consensus. No one disputes that the more social a species, the more pheromone components it exhibits, the larger & more active the scent glands, etc., even though this might be just an artifact of the consensus, people falling into line, like Dead Poets Society (a film I worked on in my youth). It's an observation of one of my professors at SUNY-ESF, Silverstein, upon finding 25 components in a single pheromone. I remember his name only because he objected with anti-semitic virulence at my "Jewish" pronunciation of his name as ein (one in German) instead of een , or vice versa, I forget.
3- science has the added restriction of peer review which, as proven, though it is not 100% effective all the time, it is the best method to limit pseudoscience exposure, as it will destroy a scientists reputation should they post a blatant lie (see: https://en.wikipe...akefield )
4- the information in a study or in science is able to be checked without padding your own personal pocket whereas a private personal book pads your pocket regardless of the contents - you have a no lose situation where you get financial compensation regardless of the content. you could be posting a list of phone numbers from 1620 for all we know [hyperbole intended]
get the point yet?
science isn't about consensus any more than space exploration is about lemon meringue
when you hear about consensus in any science topic it is usually because the overwhelming repeatedly validated evidence all points towards a single point: gravity, climate change, GR/SR, etc
see that link above? or here: http://rspb.royal...full.pdf
Yes, the cure for crime is 250mg of healthy adult male facial skin surface lipid pheromone, and yes it is literally on the end of your nose if you are man enough. If you mishandle it as you collect it, you may wander off searching for leprechauns, but it is there, "overlooked" literally by everyone here but me.
i am a retired soldier, firefighter, investigator. i've been insulted by the best and you are not it LOL
so you're just another jvk wanna-be crank with a "buy my book" message
thanks for validating that one for me
Come on. Take a stand. Have some balls.
Thank-you for the lesson. I watched the Ted talk of the fellow in question talking about the Monel Chemical Senses work. If you read my chapter on pheromone chemistry in the book I wrote, you will see that the oddities seen in pheromones of other species manifest themselves in the 735 chemicals in human face grease. For instance, it's a hard cold fact that methylation presents on every even carbon of the chemicals from the feet in humans, never odd carbons, always even. Chemical identification was robust in Nicolaides' day, once identified, never disputed, I accept that. We know from at least 3 experiments that human pheromone reception is insidious.
