I Played President Simulator As A Libertarian and Ruined EverythingTwice – The Libertarian Republic
Posted: May 20, 2017 at 7:21 am
LISTEN TO TLRS LATEST PODCAST:
By: Paul Meekin
Well, that was unexpected.
After playing through two terms in the free iOS game President Simulator, I had nearly a 100 percent approval rating. I had lowered taxes for all citizens, encouraged jobs over handouts. Spoke to climate change deniers, encouraged innovation over regulation, and thought I did a pretty good job.
Turns outno.
No I did not.
An F+?!
Then I thought about it andfound perhaps thehidden genius of President Simulator. In truth, should a president operate based on solely on public opinion? What would make him the mostpopular?
Should a libertarian President cut as many taxes as they can without care for budget, institution, or fall out? Was it my job to go in with a jackhammer and reshape and demolish the government to the applause of zealots?
Would I have been a better President if I didnt play to be the most popular libertarian of all time, but instead to do what I think is best for the countrys mentality?
An F+?!
ThenI played as a democrat. College for all, high taxes on corporations, making unpopular choices that were in-line with the ideology of a typical democrat. I did better.
Thus, it seems President Simulator has a distinct worldview that serves to sabotage the point of simulating being President. There seems to be right and wrong choices, and they dont change or evolve depending on previous choices you made. For example I investigated corrupt judges twice, and shut down for-profit prisons twice. For example, meeting with a Climate Change denieralways results in negative diplomacy points.
Another example, the fact thatcriticizing the Military Industrial Complex almost always seems to result in your death.
Compare this to a (better) game like Reigns, which has a similar yes/no dynamic. In that game, your world evolves, your kingdom evolves based on your choices you can boost the economy at the cost of your standing with the church and it can have consequences as you play as your heir or heirs heir.
You can eventually level up the country over time, adding victory points to the various areas of Government domestic, military, economic, etc. but if the game wont reward you with a good score until you play its way, why would I keep playing?
The message of Reigns was balance is important. The message of President Simulator at least from my time with it, is that theres only one way to really go. To be fair, Reigns takes itself a little more seriously, and President Simulator is clearly tongue-in-cheek.
Maybe one day well get a version that doesnt think this stuff is such a joke. Oregon Trail had funny moments, but took the world and systems it presented deadly seriously.
Where is the American Political version of that? Have we grown so weary of our government and so eager to ostrich that a game that takes presidential politics seriously isnt marketable, even on phones? Mosteveryone has a smart phone. Yet, the best we got is this game and Reigns.
Otherwise its Trump jokes. And clicker games.
Blech.
Teach me something, damn it.
Thus, based onThe Libertarian Republic Entertainment Rating System, on a scale from Karl Marx to Ron Paul,President Simulator gets a Van Jones. Like Jones, President Simulator means well, makes salient points, and entertains. But also like Jones, its communist. There appears to be aright way to play the game, and theright was is leaningleft on a lot of issues.
That said, President Simulator is free on phones, and its entirely possible youll do better than me. Let me know what you think because you might just do better.
Hell, Id vote for ya.

Snohomish County Libertarian Party Begins Fielding Candidates In Everett – My Everett News
Posted: at 7:21 am
The Libertarian Party has announced the formation of a formal party organization in Snohomish County. People associated with the party have begun filing for seats on the Everett City Council. Here is a press release about the formation of the Snohomish County chapter
The Snohomish County Libertarian Party (SnoCo LP) is excited to begin organizing. Its members are energized after attending the State Partys April Summit. The county party held its first convention in late February. This formation will be the first time that Libertarians will have a formal presence in Snohomish County. The SnoCo LPs formation coincides with the recent creation of chapters in King and Pierce counties.
The partys membership includes members of diverse political experience. SnoCo LP Political Director Mike Luke and Communications Director Brian Luke were previously involved in the Snohomish County Republican Party for eight years. They changed party affiliation last year and Mike ran for the US Senate and Brian ran for the 2nd Congressional District.
Chair Anthony Welti stated of the SnoCo LPs goals: We aim to give voters a 3rd choice, one that is based on freedom and not control. By lowering the cost of living and increasing the personal freedoms an individual has we can create real reform and lasting change. We will exemplify this philosophy in any position we are elected to serve the people.
The SnoCo LPs election goals will be to support county Libertarian candidates in 2017 and have Libertarian candidates in every legislative and congressional district in 2018. In 2016, over 30 Libertarian candidates ran across Washington State, including two congressional and four legislative districts in Snohomish County.
Interest in the Libertarian Party has increased in the last few years. Election results from the Snohomish County Auditor indicate that Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson received 5.45% in Snohomish County in 2016, which is a huge increase compared to his 2012 showing of 1.44%.
With regards to the political climate, Political Director Mike Luke stated that, when reviewing election results over the past few election cycles when the Libertarian Party had a presence, there is reason to believe the two major parties are losing ground with the electorate, especially as it gets younger. I believe voters everywhere are looking for more than just two choices and the Libertarian Party is the strongest of any of the third parties.
The SnoCo LPs next monthly meeting will be on Thursday, June 8th, 7pm at Alfys Pizza 2317 Broadway, Everett, WA 98201.

Libertarian Party seeks official press secretary in bid to woo news me – Washington Times
Posted: at 7:21 am
It is a first. Boosted by considerable third-party success and a higher profile during the 2016 presidential election, the Libertarian Party has made a command decision to hire a full-time, experienced press secretary.
This new staffer will be responsible for outreach to the press, building relationships with them, and helping get more media attention for the party and our candidates, said executive director Wes Benedict, who has already fired up a fundraising outreach to make the hire possible.
Achieving major media attention will help the national party grow, state parties grow, county parties grow, and increase the prestige of our candidates up and down the ballot, he added.
Last year, the Libertarians also adopted an official motto: The party of principle.
Three libertarian presidential hopefuls were featured on both CNN and Fox News last year; the final nominee Gary Johnson got plenty of press on his own seeking to woo undecided or unaffiliated voters. He also won over 3 percent of the total vote according to final exit polls with higher percentages in a number of key swing states like Michigan and Florida.
This is one of the most critical investments of 2017, and an important part of laying the foundation for big things in upcoming elections, Mr. Benedict noted.

Traton Homes Credits ‘Golden Rule’ For Reaching 46th Year – Builder Magazine
Posted: at 7:21 am
Over the course of Traton Homes 46-year history it has weathered a number of tough periods for the home building industry. Its leaders credit the companys judicious management and a strong belief in the golden rule for its success.
This has always been a family-run business, and we treat our home buyers, our employees, and our suppliers like family the way we want to be treated, said Milburn Poston, who co-founded Traton Homes with his brother Bill Poston in 1971, in a release.
The Atlanta-area builder celebrated its 46th anniversary earlier this month to reflect on its past success and where the companys heading in the years to come.
We built just five homes in our first year when we started Traton Homes almost half a century ago, said Bill Poston. Since then, we have completed nearly ten thousand single-family homes and townhomes, mainly throughout the greater Atlanta area.
The company ranked No. 182 on the 2016 BUILDER 100 list with 179 closings.
From a management point of view, our companys hallmark is its relative conservatism, noted Bill. Our risk tolerance level ensured we carefully managed our growth, which allowed us to navigate through the tough times. Thanks to our outstanding team of long-term employees, and thanks to our loyal and continuously growing family of homeowners, we continue to be very optimistic about Tratons future.
Tratons business model has evolved over the years. In addition to building homes, Traton also develops parcels throughout a number of metro Atlanta counties. Traton plans to open three additional communities this year in its home county of Cobb including a new townhome community near Marietta Square.
Traton offers homes ranging from the $290,000s to the $800,000s and is currently building in Cobb, Cherokee, North Fulton, and South Forsyth counties
Each Traton home exemplifies our legacy of sound construction, superior service and outstanding value, says Clif Poston, Tratons executive vice president. While we are focusing a bright future, that legacy is one thing that will not change. That is our promise, now and when our company meets the half-century mark.

Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Seppala 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM Morality is a highly subjective concept that has its roots in a variety of sources.
Some derive their sense of morality from their religious convictions, while others tend to draw on their cultural roots.
Sgt. 1st Class Timothy F. Seppala
The truth is, morality can come from almost anywhere, and it is unique to each individual.
As you can imagine, having so many sources of morality leads to different views on what is right and wrong. Of course, some moral issues are almost universally accepted. Most people would agree that murder, rape and theft are morally reprehensible. However, it is those issues that most people do not agree on that cause them to protest and riot on the streets of the United States.
Abortion, gay marriage, capital punishment, transgender bathroom choice, or even less controversial issues such as alcohol use, pornography, divorce and premarital sex can all have a dividing effect on society.
Although not as prevalent or vocal, this societal divide does extend into the military, particularly when policies run contrary to the moral system of some of the Soldiers and leaders of our units.
Unlike our civilian counterparts, those of us in uniform are not allowed to speak out against policies that we find run contrary to our moral beliefs. The question then becomes How do we reconcile our morality with a policy that violates our sense of right and wrong?
The answer lies in the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
It is OK for Soldiers and leaders to hold onto their belief systems. The Army wants leaders with conviction; after all, a person with a grasp of right and wrong is far better than one who has no moral compass to follow. Just dont let your views of morality prevent you from treating everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve as fellow Soldiers and human beings.
If you find yourself struggling with a moral dilemma in either your work or personal life, you are encouraged to find a member of the Chaplain Corps. The Chaplain Corps is able to offer you a safe, confidential environment where you can discuss your thoughts and work through your problems without fear of judgment or reprisal.
Chaplains and religious affairs specialists are assigned to every battalion and higher-level unit in the Army, and they are ready to stand by you as you face all of lifes pitfalls.
(Editors note: Seppala is a senior religious affairs noncommissioned officer.)

Iranian presidential election pits liberal reformer against hardliner – CBS News
Posted: at 7:20 am
TEHRAN --Iran voted for a new president on Friday, with results yet to come in. The campaign had a familiar theme: The populist facing the incumbent.
This race came down to a clear choice between the current moderate President Hassan Rouhani, whose promises for liberal reforms appeal to young people, and the hardliner Ebrahim Raisi, a populist who has promised his working-class base cash handouts and millions of jobs.
One key thing Iranians are voting on is how their country will relate to the U.S. and the rest of the world, with openess and cooperation led by Rouhani, the reformist, or with suspicion and hostility under the conservative Raisi.
Crowds in Iran supporting presidential candidate Ebrahim Raisi.
CBS News
Thirty-eight years ago, revolutionary Iranian students held 52 Americans hostage in the U.S. embassy. Their spokeswoman was Masoumeh Ebtekar.
Today, she's one of Iran's vice presidents. She's done something of a 180 over the years and now hopes for better relations with the U.S.
Are they likely to come under President Trump, who is on the record as saying that Iran is a hostile presence, a problem?
"He's also changing a lot of his positions as well," Ebtekar says. "He's also making a lot of U-turns."
Masoumeh Ebtekar, the spokeswoman for the students who held 52 Americans hostage at the Iranian embassy, is now one of Iran's vice-presidents.
CBS News
Ebtekar says she hopes Mr. Trump will adjust to the realities when it comes to positions on Iran.
Realities like the nuclear deal, which was backed by millions of voters in Iran who hope it was the first step toward even stronger ties with the U.S.
But another reality is that -- at the moment -- there's absolutely no sign the Trump White House is sharing the love.
In fact, the U.S. added some fresh sanctions against Iran this week, so the signs are that things are about to get decidedly frosty.

The 5 Biggest Things Liberals Get Wrong About Themselves – Townhall
Posted: at 7:20 am
|
Posted: May 20, 2017 12:01 AM
If self-delusion were magic, average liberals would be David Blaine, David Copperfield and Houdini all rolled up into one. Most of what they say has no relation to what theyre doing, the policies they push rarely work and logic might as well be a strange, alien language to them. Since thats the case, explaining all the things liberals get wrong about themselves could easily be the topic of my second book (Heres a link to my first one), but since we only have so much space to work with in a column, here are the top five.
1) Liberals Are Better Than Everyone Else: If theres one thing that liberals are sure of beyond all others, its that they are better, smarter and more capable than everyone else by virtue of being liberals. As the great Thomas Sowell has noted:
The presumed irrationality of the public is a pattern running through many, if not most or all, of the great crusades of (liberals) in the twentieth centuryregardless of the subject matter of the crusade or the field in which it arises. Whether the issue has been overpopulation, Keynesian economics, criminal justice, or natural resource exhaustion, a key assumption has been that the public is so irrational that the superior wisdom of (liberals) must be imposed, in order to avert disaster. The (liberals) do not simply happen to have a disdain for the public. Such disdain is an integral part of their vision, for the central feature of that vision is preemption of the decisions of others.
No matter who you are or what you do, there are always tens of millions of liberals who believe they have a better idea of what you should be thinking, feeling and spending your money on. Of course, that sense of smug superiority coupled with the disastrous results of liberal policies would almost be comical, except for the destruction in real peoples lives that is left in the wake of liberal policies.
2) Liberals Are Victims: Wrong. Liberals are bullies. In fact, theyre the worst kind of bullies -- bullies who believe that theyre the victims. Those are the worst kind of bullies because they believe theyve already been wronged and therefore almost anything they do in retaliation is justified. Of course, being wronged may mean someone disagreed with them, voted for a candidate they dont like or simply didnt want to give up more of his income for a liberal program. Liberals are the epitome of the Stop Bullying Song from South Park -- aggrieved bullies looking for a victim they can claim wronged someone so they can try to destroy him in the name of tolerance.
Bullying isn't cool. Bullying is lame.
Bullying is ugly and has a stupid name.
For a healthy world, bullying's unfit.
And I think I know what we should do to i-it.
Do do do do do to i-it.
Let's all get together and make bullying kill itself.
Bullying's an ugly thing
Lets shove its face in the dirt and make bullying kill itself.
3) Liberals Are Rebellious: If some nerd standing in the middle of a Star Trek convention shouted, Star Wars is inferior to Star Trek and then wanted everyone to pat him on the back and tell him how courageous he was for doing it, people would laugh. Yet liberals surround themselves almost entirely with other liberals, get liberalism served up to them at school, watch liberalism on TV at home, hear liberal messages from their favorite celebrities and musicians, get their news from MSNBC and the Daily Show and then want all the other libs doing the same thing to laud them for their courage because they say, I dont like Donald Trump or Good for Colin Kaepernick for protesting during the national anthem! Look at how Im fighting the power by saying the same thing as the New York Times, Washington Post and Lady Gaga! As Greg Gutfeld said, Liberalism is the one-way ticket to backslapping approval among the cool kids, which makes it about as rebellious as a divorced dad getting an earring from the local malls Piercing Pagoda.
4) Liberals Are Tolerant: The LEAST TOLERANT people in America outside of maybe the God Hates F*gs wackos are liberals. Dont believe that? Try being a conservative whos invited to speak on a college campus, a black man who likes Donald Trump or a gay American who opposes gay marriage and see how that goes for you when you interact with liberals. Think about the fact that there are college professors, actors and reporters who have to hide their ideologies because it would hurt their careers to have their liberal colleagues know they dont agree with everything Michael Moore has to say. The most abusive people in America when it comes to women? Theyre liberal men talking to conservative women. Incidentally, the second most abusive group are liberal feminists who claim to represent all women. Liberals are habitually nasty, dishonest and vindictive toward people for no other reason than because theyre incapable of tolerating even a politely offered dissenting viewpoint.
5) Liberals Are In Favor Of Progress: Liberals are so sure that theyre in favor of progress that they call themselves progressives. Meanwhile, theyve been pushing variations on the same economic agenda for 80 years even after socialism became so discredited that even the red Chinese started moving toward capitalism. Their ideas on free speech at college campuses? They believe in shutting down the speech of people that disagree with them, with violence if necessary, just like Mussolini. By the way, did you know Mussolini was widely acknowledged as a lefty even by other liberals until WWII kicked off? Liberal Democrats finally reached the same place on race in the 1960s as conservative Republicans were during the Civil War, then pretended they were the good guys all along. Once you get beyond that, what do you have? A reflexive hostility toward morals and Christianity that has been around for decades and a bunch of libs who arent sure what gender they are trying to come up with creative new things to be offended about.
