Aloe Blacc Is A Testament To The Strength Of Strategic Giving & Intentional Artistry – Vibe
Posted: May 18, 2017 at 2:46 pm
Aloe Blacc can remember his first time in the muggy oasis of New Orleans clear as day. It was before Good Things Aloe, when he was still in his future soul hip-hop phase, but not yetintegrated into the music industry as a soul singer and Grammy-nominated recording artist. It was a very messy time in his life literally. Hed taken over the town for his best friends bachelor party, passing through the citys storied daiquiri drive-thrus, speed racing through the bayou and letting confectioned sugar powder their good clothes in a beignet fight.
Aloe has since returned to the city several times in a more professional capacitieshe and Pharrell touched down in the Big Easy for Bruno Mars 2014 Moonshine Jungle Tourbut his most recent trip was to honor one of musics biggest influences: jazz. Aloes passion for jazz and the influence music like it has on the world is why Hilton Honors tapped him for their Music Happens Hereprogram.
We look for artists who are passionate about something, Mark Weinstein, Senior Vice President & Global Head of Customer Engagement,Loyalty and Partnerships says of Aloe. Just hours after letting six Hilton Honors members in on an exclusive studio session, Blacc serenated about 200 more at the House Of Blues last Friday (May 12). [Aloe] said, I love R&B and jazz, thats where this all comes from. He wanted to rerecord What A Wonderful World, the Louis Armstrong song, and really wanted to come to New Orleans.
During the hour-long showcase, Aloe ran through some of his most popular cutsYou Make Me Smile, the Elton John-sampling Im The Man, Wake Me Up and a snazzy, slowed down cover of Michael Jacksons Billy Jean were fan favoritesbacked by a vibrant band that brought out the best of all the instruments they played.
Staying in line with the iconic genre perched on his pedestal, jazz also heavily influenced Kendrick Lamars To Pimp A Butterfly, an album Aloe feels was one of the most poignant musical statement-pieces in the last few years. Aside from the stanzas and melodies woven through Kung-Fu Kennys heavily lauded 2015 LP, what Aloe loves most is the intentional nature of the Compton, Calif. natives artistry. Yes, the music sounds damn good, but more importantly, its Kendricks way of feeding ideas of how to fix communities of color from the inside out that impresses him.

Its easy to identify an artist like Kendrick because you know that he is using his platform, he says. Hes really smart about slowly opening that envelope to where hes really trying to educate folks with the lyrics.
In addition to waxing poetic about the power of K. Dots prose, Aloe sat down with us to talk about how his mentor Harry Belafonte inspired the way he donates to worthwhile causes, why its a good thing that the privileged are trying to stay woke and how his own music falls in line with these turbulent times.
VIBE: What made you feel that the Music Happens Here was a great fit for you to come back to New Orleans and highlightthe jazz scene? Aloe Blacc: Well, jazz was born here in New Orleans and has influenced, if not, ignited the foundation of so many other styles of music. Saying music happens here is more than just saying that its happening here. Music has happened here, music started here, and its spread across the world. Youve got an artist like Louis Armstrong, who weve been paying homage to, who took jazz around the world. He humanized the idea of a black man, although it still took decades. His music was in the homes of people who regularly would not have acknowledged him or his family, his people. I think to say music happens here, its much deeper than that. To come here and pay homage to that legacy for me is an honor.
The last two years have been a great time for music and a pivotal time in terms of people opening up and saying what needs to be said. What are some of the projects that have really moved you or impressed you? Ive been listening to a lot of old stuff, but when it comes to new stuff and new artists who are really pushing the envelope? I think its easy to identify an artist like Kendrick [Lamar] because you know hes using his platform and hes really smart about slowly opening that envelope to where hes really trying to educate folks with the lyrics. You gotta get em in. First you attract them. Hes attracted so many ears, and now hes able to start feeding those ears with the messages that he wants to deliver. Its almost diametric opposition to his contemporaries. Listen to the other hip-hop thats in the landscape right now and it just doesnt even compare in terms of the literacy and the content. Thats one artist.
Theres Tom Morello who never really stopped. With Rage Against The Machine, the name of their group was an important message to begin with, but it was almost like they were really popular for teenagers who are engaged in adolescent angst anyway, so rebellion is kinda part of the deal. When you see an artist like Tom Morello continue on in his activism and work with Chuck D and other activists who are artists, you recognize it wasnt just a schtick, it was real, and those messages are beyond teenage angst. Those are messages that we shouldve been espousing and holding near, because when you take your eye off of the tower, somebody might supplant the establishment and take the position at the top of the tower. You wouldnt even know what happened. But when youre already part of that kind of mindset of watching out, being astute and paying attention to whats going on, you see it, you know it and you just wish that you could scream loud enough for everybody else to hear so that you can amass a movement. I think now that you see these rallies and marches like the one that happened after Inauguration, there are people whove never marched for anything in their lives in that one. Those are the people who probably felt privileged enough or didnt even recognize their privilege that they were part of they were potentially a victim or going to be threatened, just didnt even see it. But now theyre all woke and I dont mind, because we need as many colors of the rainbow as we can have to be part of the movement.

You touch on a cool point: people marching whove never marched before in their lives. A big critique that our generation gets is that were not IRL with it. So many conversations happen via social media in this very safe, contained digital realm, but then you have the people who do go out, but dont know how to continue that conversation. What, do you think, are some ways to resolve this disconnect? I look at my heroes and my mentors; Harry Belafonte, for instance. Hes a mentor to many of us in the music business. We spend time at his house, he tells us about the stories where he had to convince Dr. Martin Luther Kings father that sending Martin Luther King to Europe was the right way to fund the movement. After Harry had spent all his money on private planes because it was dangerous to have Martin Luther King in public at some point, on hotel rooms, on venues, on buses. When money was drying up from the people like me.We go out, we sell the songs, we make the money, then we dole it out to the organizations that we believe are doing the right work on the ground. Youve got to come up with different strategies. What I feel is the answer is, we are looking to the elders, we learn those strategies and methodologies, and we find the organizations that are on the ground working hard. We see a lot of artists start their non-profit organizations and their philanthropies. A lot of that is a tax shelter.
The way I understand it, if theres an organization already doing the work, I dont need to start a foundation. They just need my money. And thats what happens. Ill do a show, and Ill tell either the buyer or the booker to be sure a portion of that goes to the organization or when I get paid, a portion of it goes to the organization. Thats really how all of us should be working. But you get your folks that start their foundations and they have gala nights and they raise more money for the foundation and really its just a tax shelter. Its kind of disheartening knowing that people like Sidney Portier and Harry Belafonte funded organizations that put foreign nationals through university programs here in the United States, one being Barack Obamas father. So had he not had the likes of the entertainment elite put money in the coffers of these foundations for young aspiring youth, we wouldnt have had our first black president. Thats the legacy, and a lot of people dont know that story. They wont ever understand the power of what we do as artists. And I ask them, did you ever feel like you were compromising anything by being a popular artist? He said no, because he would always try to put the message in the music, too. When he sang Day O, it sounds like a fun island song, but really thats a day laborers hardship. He put the real message in the music. He didnt compromise, even though it may look like it because hes a pop artist, but he was still true to what he had learned from his predecessors.

Your music, and even some of the imagery in your videos, seems right for right now. It parallels those feelings and messages of today, as well as gives that necessary escape and uplifting energy. Did you have any sort of inkling or foresight that your music would play that kind of role now? I dont know if I had the foresight for it, I just know what I feel needs to be said. I get this opportunity to be marketed and promoted by one of the biggest pop labels in the world, and as long as theyre willing to put money behind it, then Im going to take the opportunity to either uplift or educate. Its either going to be Wake Me Up or Love Is The Answer, or like on my second to last album, Life So Hard or Politician. So its not something I foresaw. I didnt realize it would get to this dire situation so quickly, but were here. So Im going to put the messages in the music and try to get the record label to push it. I just recorded a song which I think is going to be my next single and I used the music videos a lot of the times as the PSA. I have a dream for my next single chronicling the story of Madiba, of Nelson Mandela. I think we need a visual of what a real leader is so we can understand the juxtaposition of whats happening in this administration. Of course we just had Obama, but its just too recent. People arent really championing that legacy, so we need to see one that everybody agrees on. Indisputable. Then we do the litmus test. We look at this and look at that and you tell us what is real.

‘Alien: Covenant’ Stars Not Too Keen on Space Travel – Space.com
Posted: at 2:45 pm
LONDON As crewmembers of the Covenant spaceship, they spent years traveling toward the distant planet Origae-6, with the goal of establishing a colony to secure the survival of humanity.
But that's science fiction. In real life, the actors who star in "Alien: Covenant" Ridley Scott's new installment in the "Alien" film saga, which opens in theaters across the United States Friday (May 19) don't seem all that excited about venturing into the final frontier. And you can't really blame them. As with every "Alien" mission, the Covenant's trip didn't turn out exactly as the crew and the passengers had hoped, ending in a horrific fight for life.
"If somebody said, 'Do you want to go to space?' and the opportunity arose, I would take it," said Michael Fassbender, who reprised his role as the android David from 2012's "Alien" film "Prometheus" and added a second one as an upgraded version of the robot called Walter. [9 Terrifying Extraterrestrials from the 'Alien' Movies]
"But it's not on my bucket list or anything," Fassbender told Space.com here earlier this month.
Demin Bichir (left), Danny McBride (center) and Billy Crudup (right) cast members of the new film "Alien: Covenant" talk about real-life space exploration with Space.com contributor Tereza Pultarova.
The film's main star, Katherine Waterston, portrays a bereaved terraforming expert named Daniels who turns into a kickass monster-fighting warrior in the film. In real life, however, she finds the time commitment of space travel, especially the intergalactic type, quite off-putting.
"I don't think they would be able to offer that kind of spaceship that I would want to travel on in my lifetime: one that flies as quickly as from New York to London," she said.
Even the film's director, the legendary Sir Ridley Scott (who also directed the original 1979 "Alien" and the 2015 smash hit "The Martian"), admitted he is not of a particularly adventurous spirit.
"Are you kidding me? I like it here," said Scott, who also directed "Prometheus," which takes place 10 years before the events of "Covenant."
Billy Crudup (who plays Covenant's second in command, Christopher Oram) and Danny McBride (who plays the ship's pilot, Tennessee) agreed with the rest of the cast.
"We are not going anywhere," Crudup said.
"I get motion sickness," McBride said. "I feel like it would be rough just getting out of the atmosphere. I will let everyone else leave, and then I'll just wander around and take stuff from their houses."

California’s next new tax? Private space travel – OCRegister
Posted: at 2:45 pm
Government has been criticized for being slow to adapt to new technologies but not when it comes to taxing them, it seems.
And especially not in California, where the Franchise Tax Board is blasting off with a proposal to tax the fledgling private spaceflight industry. The tax would be the first of its kind at the state level.
Perhaps there is a good reason for that. Maybe other states do not want to bleed the industry dry before it can even get off the launch pad. Yet, incredibly, the FTB says its tax scheme, which would be determined by a formula based on the number of launches made from within the state and the distance traveled, would be a boon to the industry. By introducing a measure of certainty over tax treatment, the FTB says, its proposal will lead to increased activity in the industry and will foster an atmosphere of growth and prosperity once present during the golden age of Californias aviation industry, thereby creating jobs as the industry thrives in this state.
Because more taxes not savings; investment; competitive markets; good, old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity; and the freedom to keep the fruits of ones labor is what is needed to foster an atmosphere of growth and prosperity. And if companies have been holding back on their investments for fear of how much of their wealth the state will try to confiscate, that does not exactly speak well to the states treatment of businesses in this industry or any other.
Yes, taxes always foster growth and prosperity somewhere else where taxes are lower, quipped writer Ed Straker in a post for the American Thinker. California state government spends all its time 24/7 thinking of new ways to tax people and businesses, he added. Sadly, that does, indeed, seem to be the case.
There is something to be said for eliminating uncertainty over government tax and regulatory policies, especially if it provides some assurance that in-state businesses will not be excessively taxed and out-of-state competitors using the same launch facilities in California will be subject to the same rules. But, given our policymakers propensity to heap on more and more taxes and restrictions on businesses, this can hardly be a comforting thought.
And the eagerness to be the first to impose such a tax does not bode well for encouraging or attracting private space businesses, when they could operate without such a tax elsewhere.
States that dont levy taxes would have that competitive advantage over states that do, John Logsdon, professor emeritus and co-founder of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, told the San Francisco Chronicle. If California puts in a tax and Florida or Texas doesnt have a similar tax, Im not sure that helps California in a competitive way.
We have seen the future, and the future is more taxes. In other words, it is more of the same for California. The state prides itself on the presence of innovative companies, especially in Silicon Valley, but if it wants a brighter economic future, it should learn to take a more hands-off approach, whether it is the treatment of exciting new ventures whisking goods and people into space or the more terrestrial and mundane pursuits of other businesses that provide economic opportunities for workers and needed goods and services for consumers in California and across the globe.

Buzz Aldrin Receives Prestigious Award, Details Vision for Mars Travel – Space.com
Posted: at 2:45 pm
Buzz Aldrin, a former NASA astronaut and the second person to walk on the moon, gives a speech at the Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony on May 13, 2017.
NEW YORK Former NASA astronaut and Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrinreceived the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and gave a speech about his dreams for human exploration of Mars during a ceremony here at the historic immigration site Saturday (May 13).
Aldrin, who landed on the moon alongside Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, was one of this year's 90 recipients of the prestigious award. Other recipients included the Nobel Peace Prize-winning teenage activist Malala Yousafzai, CNN journalist and TV host Fareed Zakaria, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Former NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin and his assistant, Christina Korp, arrive at the red carpet after taking a ferry from Manhattan to Ellis Island for the Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony on May 13, 2017.
As a springtime nor'easter drenched the tristate area, soaking celebrities and pummeling umbrellas in the wind, the awardees and their family members crammed inside the Miss Ellis Island Ferry at Battery Park in Manhattan and set off to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum just a stone's throw away from the Statue of Liberty to receive their medals.
Every year, the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) presents the Ellis Island Medals of Honor "to a select group of individuals whose accomplishments in their field and inspired service to our nation are cause for celebration," the organization states on its website.
Buzz Aldrin and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran for president in 2016, seemed quite chummy during the Ellis Island Medals of Honor awards on May 13, 2017.
Aldrin's 1969 moon landing may have been the pinnacle of his career, but that's not the only reason he earned the award. Aldrin, who holds a Ph.D. in astronautics, also devised several crucial technologies for space travel throughout his extensive career, and continues to advocate for space exploration. [Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Moonwalker, in Photos]
Most notably, Aldrin is a major advocate for sending humans to Mars. But he thinks we should first demonstrate the technologies required for humanity to go to Mars by doing practice runs to the moon, Aldrin told Space.com on the red carpet. He elaborated on his ideas for Mars during a speech he gave at the ceremony.
Aldrin spoke of his dream to see an international "lunar-Mars coalition" supporting Europe, Russia, Japan and China. Reusable spacecraft called "cyclers" would carry astronauts to the moon and back, followed by crewed trips to asteroids and flybys of Venus.
Add to that a rendezvous and refueling system with spacecraft "parked" at Earth's Lagrange points, and humanity will be ready to start expanding this kind of space-based infrastructure to the Red Planet with the ultimate goal of colonization, Aldrin explained. "Crews will be briefly trained at the moon before their flights to Mars."
Buzz Aldrin shows off his "Future Martian" t-shirt next to Space.com's Hanneke Weitering at the Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony on May 13, 2017.
Aldrin introduced his idea for a pathway to Marsin 1985. More than 30 years later, the 87-year-old space enthusiast is still advocating for it, and he continues to support space exploration in general.
Before coming to New York for the awards ceremony, Aldrin made a trip to Washington, D.C., to speak at the Humans to Mars Summit and visit the White House, where he spoke with officials about funding for space exploration.
"I am actively working on the future every day. My commitment to serving this country has never wavered, and I give it my all every day," Aldrin said during his speech. "I'm proud to stand here on Ellis Island, where so many dreams began for so many people.
"I hope to help shape the future of humans traveling among the stars and making homes on other planets," he added. "It is our nature to explore. We explore, or we expire. I will do all I can do to inspire the future generations. No dream is too high for those with their eye in the sky. I know, because I'm living proof."

New Study Blames Humans for Disruptive Space Weather Events – Sci-News.com
Posted: at 2:45 pm
Humans have long been shaping Earths landscape, but now scientists know we can shape the near-Earth environment as well. Image credit: NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center / Genna Duberstein.
Anthropogenic effects on the space environment started in the late 19th century and reached their peak in the 1960s when high-altitude nuclear explosions were carried out by several countries. These explosions created artificial radiation belts near Earth that resulted in major damages to satellites. Another, unexpected impact of the high-altitude nuclear tests was the electromagnetic pulse.
Other anthropogenic impacts on the space environment include chemical release experiments, high-frequency wave heating of the ionosphere and the interaction of VLF (very low frequency) waves with the radiation belts.
In a paper recently published in the journal Space Science Reviews, researchers reviewed the fundamental physical process behind these phenomena and discussed the observations of their impacts.
Space Weather Events Linked to High-Altitude Nuclear Explosions
From 1958 to 1962, the U.S. and the Soviet Union ran high-altitude tests with exotic code names like Starfish, Argus and Teak. The tests have long since ended, and the goals at the time were military. Today, however, they can provide crucial information on how humans can affect space.
The tests were a human-generated and extreme example of some of the space weather effects frequently caused by the Sun, said co-author Dr. Phil Erickson, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory.
If we understand what happened in the somewhat controlled and extreme event that was caused by one of these man-made events, we can more easily understand the natural variation in the near-space environment.
Space weather is typically driven by external factors. The Sun sends out millions of high-energy particles, the solar wind, which races out across the Solar System before encountering Earth and its magnetosphere, a protective magnetic field surrounding the planet.
Most of the charged particles are deflected, but some make their way into near-Earth space and can impact our satellites by damaging onboard electronics and disrupting communications or navigation signals.
These particles, along with electromagnetic energy that accompanies them, can also cause auroras, while changes in the magnetic field can induce currents that damage power grids.
The Cold War tests, which detonated explosives at heights from 16 to 250 miles above the surface, mimicked some of these natural effects. Upon detonation, a first blast wave expelled an expanding fireball of plasma, a hot gas of electrically charged particles. This created a geomagnetic disturbance, which distorted Earths magnetic field lines and induced an electric field on the surface.
Some of the tests even created artificial radiation belts, akin to the natural Van Allen radiation belts, a layer of charged particles held in place by Earths magnetic fields.
Other tests mimicked other natural phenomena we see in space. The Teak test, which took place on Aug. 1, 1958, was notable for the artificial aurora that resulted. The test was conducted over Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean.
On the same day, the Apia Observatory in Western Samoa observed a highly unusual aurora, which are typically only observed in at the poles. The energetic particles released by the test likely followed Earths magnetic field lines to the Polynesian island nation, inducing the aurora. Observing how the tests caused aurora, can provide insight into what the natural auroral mechanisms are too.
Later that same year, when the Argus tests were conducted, effects were seen around the world.
These tests were conducted at higher altitudes than previous tests, allowing the particles to travel farther around Earth.
Sudden geomagnetic storms were observed from Sweden to Arizona and scientists used the observed time of the events to determine the speed at which the particles from the explosion traveled.
They observed two high-speed waves: the first traveled at 1,860 miles per second and the second, less than a fourth that speed. Unlike the artificial radiation belts, these geomagnetic effects were short-lived, lasting only seconds.
Such atmospheric nuclear testing has long since stopped, and the present space environment remains dominated by natural phenomena.
However, considering such historical events allows scientists and engineers to understand the effects of space weather on our infrastructure and technical systems.
NASAs Van Allen Probes Find Anthropogenic Bubble Shrouding Earth
VLF radio communications have been found to interact with particles in space, affecting how and where they move. At times, these interactions can create a barrier around Earth against natural high energy particle radiation in space, according to Dr. Erickson and co-authors.
VLF signals are transmitted from ground stations at huge powers to communicate with submarines deep in the ocean.
While these waves are intended for communications below the surface, they also extend out beyond our atmosphere, shrouding Earth in a VLF bubble.
This bubble is even seen by spacecraft high above Earths surface, such as NASAs Van Allen Probes.
The probes have noticed an interesting coincidence the outward extent of the VLF bubble corresponds almost exactly to the inner edge of the Van Allen radiation belts, a layer of charged particles held in place by Earths magnetic fields.
Professor Dan Baker, co-author of the paper and director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, coined this lower limit the impenetrable barrier and speculates that if there were no human VLF transmissions, the boundary would likely stretch closer to Earth.
Indeed, comparisons of the modern extent of the radiation belts from Van Allen Probe data show the inner boundary to be much farther away than its recorded position in satellite data from the 1960s, when VLF transmissions were more limited.
With further study, VLF transmissions may serve as a way to remove excess radiation from the near-Earth environment.
A number of experiments and observations have figured out that, under the right conditions, radio communications signals in the VLF frequency range can in fact affect the properties of the high-energy radiation environment around the Earth, Dr. Erickson said.

Penguin Computing Adds Support for Singularity Containers on POD HPC Cloud – insideHPC
Posted: at 2:44 pm
Today Penguin Computing announced support for Singularity containers on its Penguin Computing On-Demand (POD) HPC Cloud and Scyld ClusterWare HPC management software.
Our researchers are excited about using Singularity on POD, said Jon McNally, Chief HPC Architect at ASU Research Computing. Portability and the ability to reproduce an environment is key to peer reviewed research. Unlike other container technologies, Singularity allows them to run at speed and scale.
Penguin Computing customers are able to build and run Singularity containers on their in-house HPC resources and run the same container on POD, ensuring the same application and OS environment. Entire workflows can be built into a container enabling both bursting and replication for disaster recovery.
Weve long desired to support containers in our public HPC cloud, but the most adopted technology of our users was Docker, said Will Cottay, Director of Cloud Solutions at Penguin Computing. For loosely coupled applications in a virtual or private environment Docker is great, but it doesnt scale up to supercomputers. Singularity provides the flexibility of containers with the security and scalability needed for tightly coupled HPC workflows. Were very grateful to Greg Kurtzer with the High Performance Computing Services group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for inventing and developing Singularity.
Since Singularity supports the import or direct execution of Docker images, users can use their existing Docker assets, or leverage others work. A single command will download and run an image from a Docker Hub repository.
Penguins POD team is maintaining a public GitHub repository of specification files to make it easy for users to build containers tuned for HPC clusters.
Penguin Computing also now ships Singularity with Scyld ClusterWare 7 HPC management software. Earlier this year Penguin Computing announced Scyld ClusterWare 7 as the companys latest version of its HPC provisioning software, enabling support of large scale clusters with enhanced functionality for clusters ranging to thousands of nodes.

Ascension Day: an ongoing reminder of eternal life – The Herald Journal

I find the New Testament book of Hebrews to be the most important book in the New Testament.
Why? Because if one book was removed from the New Testament, Hebrews would leave the largest gap. Each New Testament book brings something unique to the biblical witness, but Hebrews uniquely covers themes that are critical to the Christian faith concerning who Jesus is.
I am thinking about this as we look forward to Ascension Day next week on May 25. If you are unfamiliar with Ascension Day, it remembers Jesus ascension into heaven 40 days after the resurrection. Any biblical Christian will tell you of the critical importance of Jesus virgin birth, his death on the cross and his resurrection at Easter, but few include Ascension Day. Not only is the gospel incomplete without the ascension, it is because of the ascension that we have a lasting hope.
Story continues below video
The account of the ascension is found in Acts 1. After Jesus gave his disciples some final instructions, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven (9-11).
We can easily read these verses as being nothing more than the accounting of how it happened, but Hebrews teaches us that it is much more. Among other things, it testifies to us of how the ascension of Christ is critical for the hope that is ours in Christ.
Maybe you know that Jesus died for our sins so that those who believe in him may inherit eternal life my question is, Where can you find hope between now and then? Hebrews opens by telling us that Jesus is not only superior to the angels and the prophets, but that the sacrifice he offered on the cross for sinners was also superior to the ones offered previously. The how has to do with the ascension.
Hebrews 9 tells us that Christs sacrifice was superior in two ways. First in that it was the sacrifice of a human life, not an animal, and second, that because of the resurrection and ascension, it brings us everlasting hope: He used his own blood, not the blood of goats and bulls, for the sacrifice. He went into the most holy place and offered this sacrifice once and for all to free us forever (12).
The letter reminds us of how the Lord commanded his people to offer sacrifices to atone for their sins not to make them righteous, but to point them to the perfect sacrifice that the Messiah would make: How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! For this reason, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant (Hebrews 9:14-15).
This is important because we learn that under the Levitical system, both the priest and the sacrifice were wanting. Hebrews alone reveals how Jesus is both our priest and sacrifice; we need both for the hope of our salvation. It is Jesus superiority in all things that gives us hope. How? Because while death limited the service of the former priests, God raised Jesus from the dead and because he has ascended into heaven, he is able to continually intercede for us: Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them (Hebrews 7:23-25).
Ascension Day does more than to simply remind us that Jesus has ascended to the right hand of the Father it testifies of how he continues to live and intercede on our behalf. He is not an impersonal power or force, he is the living Lord who shed his blood for you and me so that we may have eternal life. Knowing this gives us a lot to celebrate on Ascension Day!

Contributed Report
The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) selected Ascension Public Schools to receive the Gold Medallion Award for its successful 2016 bond election communication campaign, "Growing at the Pace of Excellence." Ascension is one of 11 schools districts across the country to win NSPRA's highest honor this year and is the only recipient from Louisiana to achieve this distinctionin recent history.
"Once again, Ascension is being recognized on a national stage for excellence, this time for effective communication, which is a critical aspect of our operations," said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent David Alexander. "The ability to offercutting-edge programs, technology, facilities and competitive salaries hinges upon localsupport. We are honored that our efforts to inform voters about school expansion needs in 2016 will be used as a model for other school districts across the county."
On April 9, 2016, 80 percent of Ascension Parish voters cast a ballot in favor to extend a 15.08 millage to generate $120 million in bonds to fund four new schools and facility improvements district-wide. This was the culmination of a comprehensive communication plan executed by the district's public information office in consultation with Taylor Media Services. Components of the campaign included community meetings, presentations to government and business groups, a comprehensive video, mailers, strategic signage, social media and grassroots outreach.
"This campaign was successful because we were all in, from the superintendent, board members and directors toprincipals, teachers and support staff. Our community trusts that we are good stewards of their financial investments, and they showed that support at the polls," said Assistant Superintendent A. Denise Graves.
The school district has worked with Taylor Media Services since 2003including the successful passage of multiple elections. This wasthe first election campaign under Public Information Officer Jackie Tisdell, who joinedthe district in 2015.
"As a parent and Ascension Parish resident, I have always voted to support our schools. This was the first time I worked on an election campaign and am grateful for the supportofTaylor Media Services, as well as the hard work of the Director of Planning and Construction Chad Lynch and our entire staff," said Tisdell. "Although tremendously humbled by this recognition, we know our work is far from over. We willfocus our communicationeffortsonthe construction progress of new schools and renovations."

Artificial Superintelligence Review: Reigns Supreme? – Gamezebo
Posted: at 2:41 pm
Artificial Superintelligence is a game about making choices. Theyre binary choices you can swipe left or right when youve got a decision to make. The outcome affects the comings and goings of the AI company that youre the head of. Its a game of balancing and making the right decisions.
Its also a game about multiverses, the dangers of artificial intelligence, and a cute cat that wanders around your office making cute cat noises. Its essentially another take on the Tinder-as-a-game play of Reigns, but with a sci-fi setting.
And while its fun, its not quite as fun as its inspiration. Theres some good writing here, and some nice ideas, but you never quite feel compelled enough to push on to the next universe to see what you can mess up this time round.
The game starts off with an AI youve built destroying the human race. From there you move from alternate universe to alternate universe, seeing if you can try and avoid making the same mistakes. Or, more likely, make a lot different ones.
The key to success is balancing four different bars. These represent your employees, your investors, the government and the tech press. Annoy one of them too much and its game over. But on the flip side of that, if you favour one of them too much, youll find your dreams crashing down too.
You have to make sure youre not giving too much power to any of the factions. Every choice you make youll see how its going to change the meter of all the sides. But theres a twist, you can see how powerful that change is going to be, but not what direction the bar is going to slide.
Some of the choices are pretty obvious. Others are a little less clear, and some of them dont really make any sense. It can be frustrating when a decision you thought was definitely going to go well with one of your backers actually has the opposite reaction.
Sometimes youll get a second chance, with investors or the government stepping in at the last second to offer you a lifeline. Other times youll end up disemboweled because you tried to use a keyboard to defend yourself during an annual purge that your AI has set up.
Each of the universes has its own set of rules you need to contend with. Some are in the grip of a horrible virus that makes your skin fall off, others are populated by robots. Some of them have senators that really like dressing up as rabbits.
The whole thing plays out pretty well, but theres frustration as well as fun here. Making the wrong choice can lead to disaster, and when it feels like youve been shortchanged by the game, it means youre less likely to jump to the next universe and try again.
And thats a bit of a shame. Theres some excellent writing here, and some interesting ideas, but after a while youre going to stop caring that much and wander away to play something else.
Artificial Superintelligence could have been much better than it is, and who knows, maybe with a few tweaks down the line itll be worth a second look. As it stands its a very cautious recommendation. Theres definitely enjoyment to be sucked out of the game, but just be prepared for that enjoyment to be tempered with annoyance.
