Superior condemns Belgian order’s green light to euthanasia – The Tablet

10 May 2017 | by Tom Heneghan The Belgian chapter decided in late April to allow assisted death, even for people not in the terminal stage of illness

Brother Ren Stockman, global head of the Brothers of Charity order, has condemned a decision by its Belgian branch to allow euthanasia in its 15 psychiatric hospitals the first time a Catholic institution would officially comply since it was legalised in 2002.

The Belgian chapter decided in late April to allow assisted death, even for people not in the terminal stage of illness. Its nine-page guidelines said staff should focus on protecting life but also respect the autonomy of patients who no longer want to live.

Because human situations are complex and ambiguous, no single choice of concrete action can fully match all values, the guidelines said. Neither value was absolute and doctor-patient dialogue would lead to the best solution.

The decision had been discussed for a year, Br Stockman said, and the committee that took it had a majority of lay people and only a few brothers as members.

Br Stockman a Belgian posted at the orders Rome headquarters, and a specialist in psychiatric care said he had raised the issue with Vatican authorities and the Belgian bishops conference. He told Catholic News Service: I am in contact with the Vatican - the Congregation [for Institutes] of Consecrated Life [and Societies of Apostolic Life] and the Secretary of State [Pietro Parolin] who asked me for more information I hope that there will come a clear answer from the Belgian bishops and the Vatican. I have trust in it.

Br Stockman also said he was hugely disturbed by Antwerp Bishop Johan Bonny, who said he had not read the guidelines in full but thought they were balanced. The Brothers, Bishop Bonny told Belgian television, have to find a modus vivendi between medical insights, moral judgement, public opinion and the prevailing culture in Belgium.

In an interview with the Dutch weekly 'Katholiek Nieuwsblad', Br Stockman recalled the law allows exceptions and that Brussels Cardinal Jozef De Kesel has insisted Catholic institutions can refuse euthanasia.

WWII Survivor Facing Euthanasia Relives Her Life – Forward

The Longest Night By Otto de Kat Translated by Laura Watkinson MacLehose Press, 168 pages, $22.99

Emma, the sympathetic protagonist of Otto de Kats The Longest Night, is 96 and ready to say goodbye to her life. But first she will relive it, re-experiencing her emotions, debating her choices.

A nurse is at her side, and a euthanasia team is on its way. As Emma waits, her past and present converge. She drifts through labyrinthine memories of two husbands, two countries and two sons, of the terror of World War II and the painful recovery in its aftermath.

Her life had shattered into fragments, crystal clear, light and dark, an endless flow, de Kat writes in the novels opening pages. Time turned upside down, and inside out.

De Kat is the pen name of the Dutch publisher, poet, novelist and critic Jan Geurt Gaarlandt, a past winner of Hollands Halewijn Literature Prize. Hes not well known to American readers, but he should be. Its not surprising to learn that de Kat is also a poet; his linguistic gifts are evident. This is a lovely novel, at once psychological and historical, written in spare, elegant prose and beautifully translated by Laura Watkinson.

The Longest Night is the fifth in a series of interconnected World War II novels that share characters and plot points and draw on de Kats own family history. (The others are The Figure In The Distance, Man On The Move, Julia and News From Berlin.) Its dedication to the two daughters of Clarita and Adam von Trott and the memory of Christabel Bielenberg is also worth noting.

To students of the Nazi period, Adam von Trott is a familiar name, a German diplomat and Resistance member who tried in vain to convince the Allies of the possibility of a negotiated peace. He was executed (along with more than 4,000 others) after the failure of the July 20, 1944, plot to assassinate Hitler.

Bielenberg was the British wife of Peter Bielenberg, a German lawyer who opposed the Nazi regime and was friendly with Adam von Trott. When Bielenberg was arrested and sent to a concentration camp after the coup attempt, his wife successfully pleaded his case to the Gestapo. Both husband and wife survived the war, and she wrote two memoirs before her death at 94.

Emmas backstory and narrative arc are different: She is Dutch, and her good German husband, Carl Regendorf, meets a darker fate than his real-life counterpart. But Bielenberg seems to have been an inspiration for the character (along with de Kats own mother).

After July 20, de Kat writes, Emma and Carl had lived in a pressure cooker of fear and tension, dreading every footstep and creaking floorboard. When Carl, meeting with von Trott, is taken by the Gestapo, Emma flees from suburban Berlin to a supposedly Nazi-free village in the Black Forest, to stay with a friends relatives.

After the war, a brutal journey takes her back to the Netherlands, where her mothers prosperous cousin lives. She arrives like a ghost, without Carl, parched with grief. But soon, at a dance club, she meets Bruno Verweij, a gentle man who stirs her enough to become her second husband.

They settle on a street in Rotterdam whose residents form a tight, mutually supportive community. Emmas relationship with Bruno isnt perfect she is romanced (and proselytized) by a pastor, and Bruno may still harbor feelings for a wartime love. Both his family and hers have a history of fractures (elucidated more fully in the earlier novels). But the marriage has solidity and endures.

The jangling of a phone, the taste of raspberries, the glint of a ring: These Proustian details inspire snatches of verse and pull Emma into the past, along a complex network of corridors, the crumpled map of her life.

De Kat re-creates the dangers and suspicions of the war years, the postwar awakening of Europes economies, the steady normalizing of relations between a Germany gleaming with prosperity and the rest of the world. Bruno wanders this new Germany as a Chamber of Commerce official, while Emma commits to [h]appiness as a task, as a duty.

The novels title refers to more than Emmas two nights of waking dreams. It turns out to be a quasi-mystical reference to a lifetime of somnolence. Awaiting death, Emma suddenly felt that she had been sleeping all her life, de Kat writes, as if she had slept through it, in fact.

To some extent, he seems to suggest, we are all like Emma, half-awake at best. Entangled in our personal and historical pasts, we sleepwalk through dramas of love and loss against the nightmare backdrop of circumstances largely beyond our control. Emmas cousin, before his death, is reading Schopenhauer, and the quote de Kat excerpts suggests a tragic balance between destiny and free will: Fate shuffles the cards, and we play.

Euthanasia: the challenging responsibility – INFORUM

Posted: at 1:21 pm

At 19 years, I knew statistically it would be soon. One evening we returned home from dinner to find our beloved male, Oedipus, could not move his back legs. He had jumped from a chair excited to eat three hours prior. I knew time was short, so I made an appointment for euthanasia the next day. I took both cats to the vet.

In the vet's office, I placed Oedipus on the table and let his sister, Phaedra, out of the cage to join him. She jumped up with him and inspected him thoroughly. When she lost interest, I placed her back in her cage.

After the vet euthanized Oedipus and we were sure he was gone, I let Phaedra out of the cage to be with him again. She checked him out thoroughly and eventually lost interest again; I put her back in her cage, and we departed.

Her grieving process was very short. She looked everywhere in the house, then adopted his position as primary lap cat. The difference in the grieving process with Phaedra seeing that Oedipus was gone was remarkable. I know in my heart that her being able to know he was dead and not suddenly just gone helped her.

I recommend allowing surviving pets to see the deceased, acknowledge the change in being and grieve gently, instead of fretting about the disappearance and fearing the same unknown will happen to them. I hope this information helps some people with the future loss of their pets.A.A.R., Naples, Fla.

Dear A.A.R.: Your observations and suggestions are important for all cat owners to consider, beginning with adding another cat to the home if you have only one. The essential steps to take to introduce a new cat are posted on my website, http://www.DrFoxVet.net.

I have also posted a long review on how animals grieve the loss of a loved one, human or non-human. As you note, some show little grief but may well benefit from having the opportunity to examine the deceased. Some cats will yowl loudly day and night after experiencing such loss, but others, like many people, seem to take it in stride. In my experience, cats will search the house more frequently when the companion animal is missing (for instance, at the vet's office or escaped outdoors for a while) than after they have been able to see the body of the deceased before removal from the home.

Dear Dr. Fox: It became apparent that it was time to put my 17-year-old cat down on New Year's Eve. Not able to stand "Kitten's" pain, I called around and found a vet who was willing to come to my home on New Year's Day. He claimed a shot right into Kitten's stomach was the best thing to do, and after the injection my family and I petted him for several minutes as he died. During this time, Kitten opened his eyes fearfully and gasped for airthen was gone. It didn't seem like a particularly painless way to go.

I would like your opinion on the least painful method of putting a cat or dog to sleep, as I have several other animals who will one day need to be put down.S.S., Herndon, Va.

Dear S.S.: I regret that you and your cat went through this experience, because this is not the best or usual way to euthanize a cat or dog.

Injecting the euthanasia solution into the abdominal cavity should be done only when a vein cannot be successfully injected, which usually ensures a smooth and quick unconsciousness and death from cardiac arrest. The abdominal injection process is slower, and the animal may struggle and gasp for air repeatedly.

In such instances where a limb or neck vein cannot be successfully injected, the best euthanasia protocol is to give an injection first into the thigh muscle of a strong sedative. This two-step procedure is the best way to help ensure a humane death. The next time around, request that the veterinarian who comes to your home follows this protocol.

Correction

In an earlier column concerning a dog's fear of being in a car, I suggested a veterinary prescription of Xanax (alprazolam). However, I included an incorrect dosage: Rather than giving the dog 0.5 grams, I recommend giving 0.5 milligrams. In addition, I want to add that you should never treat a companion animal with any of your own medications.

Send all mail to animaldocfox@gmail.com or to Dr. Michael Fox in care of Universal Uclick, 1130 Walnut St., Kansas City, MO 64106. The volume of mail received prohibits personal replies, but questions and comments of general interest will be discussed in future columns. Visit Dr. Fox's website at http://www.drfoxvet.net

Pueblo animal shelter under fire for high euthanasia rate – KOAA.com Colorado Springs and Pueblo News

Posted: at 1:21 pm

PUEBLO -

A local group is calling for drastic change at Pueblo Animal Services.

"it's something at least to aim for. When you have the city of Los Angeles going 'no-kill,' I think the city of Pueblo can handle it as well," said Suzanne Morgan, whose worked with various animal rescues for years.

Members of Stand Up For Pueblo Animals say some of the concerns they've had for years about the shelter were recently made public after a Pueblo man tried to adopt a puppy from the shelter--and was told she was going to be put down because she failed their behavioral assessment.

"It's kind of well known in the rescue community about our shelter here. Happy really got the word out there and had a lot of people join up and take notice," said one of the group's members Helinda Edwards.

Pueblo Animal Services is standing by their assessment, though, saying in a statement Tuesday:

"The evaluation is one tool we use to see if the animal exhibits behavior indicating they may be a risk to the safety of the community."

They go on to say:

"If a dog doesnt pass the evaluation, we may contact a partnering shelter with a behavior modification program to see if they are willing and able to accept the dog."

Which is exactly what eventually happened with Happy, who has since been adopted by the man who fought to keep her alive.

"Happy of course was the lucky one," said Morgan.

"There's many more in Pueblo that aren't so lucky," she added.

News5 pulled 2015 statistics from all of the Colorado shelters and found that four of the state's five shelters with the largest K9 intake numbers--including Pueblo Animal Services--also had the largest K9 euthanasia numbers.

But Pueblo Animal Services' euthanasia rate was considerably higher than the other shelters, at 27%.

This past year, it dropped to 22%. Morgan says that's still way too high.

"These peoplethink that they're going to put their animal in to get them 're-homed'--only 3/4 of them do. The rest of them are dead. And that's just wrong," she said.

Her concerns have already caught the city's attention, though.

"We did ask for the city manager to have the administration come to council and hear their side of the story and put out some questions and get some answers," City Council President Steve Nawrocki explained.

That meeting will likely happen sometime early June.

We'll keep you updated.

ELECTION 2017: Upper Dublin’s Jules Mermelstein to run for … – Montgomery Newspapers

Posted: at 1:20 pm

UPPER DUBLIN >> Jules Mermelstein has been a criminal lawyer, social studies teacher, township commissioner and UD Medal winner.

In November, hell be vying to add Judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court to his resume.

A lifelong township resident, Mermelstein, 62, says he was happily retired until January of this year, when the state Senate started trying to mess with our liberties, by trying to take away funding from so-called sanctuary cities, which he calls constitutional cities.

Its unconstitutional to force local government to hold someone for immigration, he said. What is legal is before police release an immigrant in the country illegally held on a criminal charge that they let immigration authorities know the person is going to be released, he said.

He further cited a bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy now legal until 24 weeks in Pennsylvania though the courts have said there has to be fetal viability and struck down restrictions of 20 weeks, Mermelstein said. The state Senate passed it; they didnt care.

The Trump administration put me over the edge, he said. The immigration order finally did it.

A supporter of Bernie Sanders, the longtime Democrat became disillusioned when the party started to drift to the right in the 1990s, he said. He joined the Green Party last year after it was clear Sanders was not going to get the nomination and recently began an effort to run in November for one of the four open spots on the state Superior Court.

I think the judiciary needs to stand up to the state taking over our rights, Mermelstein said.

Green Party candidates are not listed on primary ballots, they are endorsed by the party and then need to get 2,500 signatures to be on the November ballot, he said. Although his name wont be on the ballot, his supporters will be outside polling places primary day asking voters to sign a petition to get him on the November ballot, he said.

A Dresher resident and graduate of Upper Dublin High School, Mermelstein earned a bachelors degree in political science from Temple University and a law degree from American University Washington College of Law. A licensed attorney since 1980, he practiced criminal law, later earning a masters in education and teacher certification and started teaching in 2005. After two years at Germantown High School in Philadelphia, he was hired in 2007 by the Upper Dublin School District and taught U.S. history, government and economics until 2013, when he went on leave while doctors attempted to diagnose and treat a chronic illness.

Mermelstein served as an Upper Dublin commissioner from 1992-2011 and received the Upper Dublin Medal for Outstanding Citizen in 2011 in recognition of his service.

They [doctors] dont know what I have, they are treating the symptoms, he said, adding he has been stable for more than a year. The only job I could have would be one where I can manage my own schedule or be my own boss, and the judiciary has that flexibility, he said.

The Superior Court is the appellate court I most practiced in front of when I practiced law, Mermelstein said. And as a practical political reason, there are four seats available.

The judiciary has to stop what legislative and executive branches are doing in order to protect our natural rights, he said. People are born with rights, they are not given by government. The government is supposed to protect rights from the people who will take them from you. The current crop is trying to take rights away.

Mermelstein said he would like to bring more of a sense of real justice question the ability of the government to do what it is doing.

In a case of limited government, my question is, does government have the authority to label something as a crime that has no victim, he said, referring to what he termed victimless crimes, such as the possession or use of drugs.

Incarceration as a public policy should be restricted to someone who does violence to someone.

Mermelstein, the married father of two and grandfather of two, said he has joined several local progressive groups and is on the Inclusion Committee and Gun Violence Protection Task Force at Or Hadash in Fort Washington.

It will be uphill, he said, but I see a path where I could win.

The original intent [of the Constitution] was to protect our natural rights. The courts need to get involved, he said.

This candidacy is my way of resistance to forces going on now.

‘Computer savvy’ pervert caught with sick child abuse images a second time – Gazette Live

Posted: at 1:20 pm

A sex offender was caught with images of child abuse on his computer for the second time by police officers who were monitoring him.

Francis Chowns latest offending was revealed when he received an unannounced visit by an officer from the public protection unit.

The defendant took the officer into his one-bedroom bedsit and it was immediately obvious hed been using a laptop open and facing his bed, prosecutor Rachel Masters told Teesside Crown Court today.

The officer could not find any internet history on the laptop and the computer-savvy 55-year-old offender said he had no idea how he could help.

Chowns computer was seized and 74 indecent pictures of children were found on it after the visit to his home on August 12, 2015.

He said he had sole access to the machine and had viewed adult pornography but claimed he did not recall how the illegal images of children got there.

Chown, of Hartington Road, central Stockton, admitted three charges of possessing indecent photographs of children and one of possessing two images of extreme pornography.

He had a 2013 conviction and suspended prison sentence for having indecent pictures of children.

He flouted that sentence and a sexual offences prevention order by having contact with children, not telling their family he was a convicted sex offender.

For those crimes he received another six-month suspended jail term in April 2015, which he breached with his latest offences.

Alex Bousfield, defending, said Chown expressed remorse and shame and there were no difficulties since the pictures were discovered.

But there were concerns about his ongoing fantasies.

Hes been told its a custodial sentence, added Mr Bousfield.

It has to be a custodial sentence. Hes breached the first suspended sentence. Hes breached the second suspended sentence.

Hes clearly very anxious and worried about a custodial sentence.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, said Chowns pre-sentence report from the Probation Service made rather depressing reading.

It said Chown initially claimed he had no idea how the indecent images found their way on to his computer and he tried to play down his behaviour.

The judge told Chown: When you were before this court in April 2015 you had been told what would happen should you commit any further offences during the currency of that suspended sentence.

With those words ringing in your ears you went on to commit these offences. Within four months you are looking at these images.

I say this repeatedly - this is not a victimless crime. You may think its without a victim looking at these images in your home.

They are real children being made to carry out these acts. It most certainly does have victims. These poor children have to carry out those acts for your pleasure.

He jailed Chown for 18 months.

Alien-obsessed loner Simon Hermes caught with 10000 child sex abuse images but avoids jail at Chelmsford Crown … – Braintree and Witham Times

Posted: at 1:20 pm

A LONER obsessed with UFOs, aliens and child sex abuse has avoided jail despite being caught with a stash of more than 10,000 images.

Welder Simon Hermes suffered terrible misfortune in his life so withdrew from society into his own fantasy world.

Tragically for young children this included downloading hundreds of the most vile and horrific images.

The 48-year-olds house was raided in June last year by police. They found eight hard drives, five of which contained child abuse images.

Hermes admitted three counts of downloading indecent images at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier this year. He was sentenced yesterday, by Judge David Turner QC, having been caught with 531 images at the highest category A.

He also had 10,405 in category B and 468 in category C.

The court heard Hermes, of High Street, Braintree, suffers from recurrent depressive disorder and has repeatedly taken overdoses to try to end his own life.

Six years ago his mother died of breast cancer and his partner is believed to have killed herself due to illness.

Judge David Turner said: The court faces a dilemma when coming to sentence men like you. You have sufficient understanding and intelligence to recognise these are by no means victimless crimes.

Every single one of these children featured in the images you have been looking at for a number of years are someones daughter or son.

Often the lives of these children are permanently damaged.

There will have to be a prison sentence. The only question is whether it is suspended.

He continued: You possess some strange views and obsessions not related to sex and there is no doubt at all you have led an isolated life.

You are very obviously psychologically if not psychiatrically vulnerable."

Hermes was jailed for 14 months to be served concurrently on each count suspended for two years.

He will have to carry out 180 hours unpaid work, 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days with a five year sexual harm prevention order limiting his use of the internet.

He will also be on the sex offenders register for a decade.

Obamacare Bill: A game of hide and seek – Columbia Daily Herald

Posted: at 1:19 pm

As Obamacare predictably collapses and the Senate decides how to vote on the House repeal, here is a column I wrote in March, 2010:

Obama says we have been debating the Obamacare bill for a year, and now its time to ram it through in a down or up yours vote. Democrats view this bill as a cure-all elixir, Republicans view it as a suppository.

In the first tough interview of his presidency, he told Fox News that we would know what is in the bill 72 hours before the House tries to pass it. Obama seemed frustrated that the vast majority of the country is against his bill. It turns out that president-ing is harder than community organizing.

Well worth reading, the Obama Administration was foretold in Atlas Shrugged, which is 1,300 pages long. It took me two weeks to read and it was well-written. This health care reform bill runs 2,000-plus pages and is written in cryptic Washington-speak. No one understands it. It feels like we are getting the last-minute hard sell, like the one from a car salesman when he gets you in that little room with the closing guy, starts shoving documents at you to sign, and tells you not to worry your pretty little head over it.

What we saw in the past year was the Democrats having to bribe, using our tax dollars, their own supermajority party to pass this massive takeover of one-sixth of our economy. President Obama said all aspects of the bill are agreed upon except, of course, minor details like how to pay for it, whether it covers illegal immigrants, and how to cover more than 30 million more people who currently do not have health insurance, all without adding doctors and/or rationing care. Other than that, Pelosi and Reid seem to have it done.

Since our representatives have not read the bill, I will not read the bill for you and tell you what it says.

1. On the issue of how we are going to cover the predicted 30 million-plus new Obamacare enrollees, Dr. Ahmed Patel of Manhattan, Kansas has agreed to see these patients. While he readily admits Manhattan was not quite the place he saw in the pictures before he moved to our country three years ago, he thinks the additional 30 million patients will be good for his business. He says hes centrally located in Kansas, making him convenient to all Americans, and is willing to expand his waiting room.

2. There is a provision in the bill to hire all Democrats booted out of office because they voted for this bill. Where? In the government monstrosity they just created. As Representative Billy Tauzin of the politically honest state of Louisiana found out when he championed the Bush Medicare prescription drug entitlement disaster, there are $2 million-a-year jobs with pharmaceutical companies waiting for you once you leave Congress (a.k.a. the scene of the crime).

3. Obama has promised not to stump for Democrats who vote for this bill. Political pundits and the Congressional Budget Office score this as being worth 12 points for any Democrat who can keep Obama out of his district.

4. One of the more egregious deceits of Obamacare is that it front-loads the goodies: Adults up to age 26 and preexisting conditions would be immediately covered. Costs and regulations were pushed to the back end, 2017, when Obama is gone. Simple economics tells us that you cannot get something for free. Premiums and deductibles will rise as insurance companies price in all the government mandates. Obamacare seems like a flimsy hospital gown; you seem to be covered up front, but youre very exposed from the rear.

5. Obamas Julius Caesar haircut should serve as fair warning of his ultimate goal; making sure this idea blows up and forcing us to single payer. As you know, Julius Caesar overthrew the Roman Republic in a series of bold power grabs and set in motion the end of the once-proud Roman Empire. Consider yourself notified. Entitlements, once given, are hard to take away.

6. The South will not buy into Obamacare. Since we Southerners value our self-reliance, southern governors will continue to fight this law. Keep in mind, we still do Civil War reenactments and thats for a war we lost.

Editorial: It’s official. Texas rejects Jesus’ Golden Rule – Baptist Standard

Posted: at 1:18 pm

May 10, 2017 By Marv Knox / Editor

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.Do to others as you would have them do to you. Jesus (Luke 6:27-31)

Marv KnoxIn stark contrast to how much they love to wave the Christian flag while spouting God talk, Gov. Greg Abbott and the majority of Texas legislators sure do enjoy ignoring the clear teachings of Jesus. What part of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you dont they understand?

The Legislature passed and Abbott signed Senate Bill 4, the law that outlaws so-called sanctuary cities in Texas. In effect, it deputizes all Texas law enforcement officers as federal immigration agents. Beyond that, it threatens them with escalating fines if they fail to cooperate with federal agents by not retaining noncitizens who are subject to deportation.

The portion of the law that drew the greatest protest allows law enforcement officers to question the immigration status of a person who is detained, even including during a traffic stop, rather than limiting that authority to occurrences during lawful arrest.

Opposed by business, law enforcement

The law drew protests from business leaders, who fear it will cause out-of-state corporations and organizations to shun moving facilities to Texas or holding events in the state, ultimately harming the economy.

More tellingly, the states law enforcement leaders opposed the bill because it puts undocumented residents at risk of harm, particularly from people and organized groups who would prey on their vulnerability. For example, they will be unlikely to call police for everything from violent crime to unfair business practices if they know they could be deported because of an interaction with police.

We officers work extremely hard to build and maintain trust, communication and stronger relationships with minority communities through community-based policing and outreach programs, noted a statement from the Texas Major Cities Chiefs, composed of the police chiefs in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Fort Worth and San Antonio, as well as the Texas Police Chiefs Association.

Broad rules, such as those imposed by SB 4, that push local law enforcement to take a more active role in immigration enforcement will further strain the relationship between local law enforcement and these diverse communities. Such a divide between the local police and immigrant groups will result in increased crime against immigrants and in the broader community, create a class of silent victims, and eliminate the potential for assistance from immigrants in solving crimes or preventing crime.

Understandable logic

Protests from police and business leaders aside, support for the sanctuary cities ban is understandable on at least two levels. First is the apparent majority of Texans perception of fairness, and second is concern for safety.

The sanctuary cities ban seems fair because it targets undocumented residents, people who live in Texas illegally. If theyre already breaking the law, the thinking goes, then any means of bringing them to justice and deporting them is justifiable. (Christians are chief among rule-followers. A new LifeWay Research survey shows only 26 percent of Christians are likely to consider whether someone gets hurt when deciding between right and wrong.)

The ban also addresses safety, because supporters of the lawsuch as Gov. Abbott in the statement he made when he signed the billclaim undocumented residents threaten the well-being of citizens and other legal residents.

Those are straightforward lines of reasoning, which can be followed and understood.

Litany of failure

But just because they reflect their own logic does not make them right, and it certainly doesnt mean they reflect the teachings of Jesus, whom so many of the bills backers loudly claim to adore.

The sanctuary cities ban fails Jesus command: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Would any of the bills backers want to be treated this way? Would they want to be put at riskand their families put at riskby a law that makes them fear law enforcement so much they would not feel free to report rape, assault, robbery and the like?

The sanctuary cities ban fails Jesus evaluation: Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me (Matthew 25:45).

The sanctuary cities ban fails the mandate of the Old Testament law and prophets: The duty of God-honoring people is to protect the outsider in their midst.

The sanctuary cities ban fails human decency: It offers punishmentparticularly ongoing vulnerability to powerful predatorsfar disproportionate to the crime.

The sanctuary cities ban exposes Texas hypocrisy: For decades, our economy has thrived upon the toil of undocumented workers. From construction, to petroleum, to agriculture, undocumented workers have lifted the fortunes of all of us. Subjecting them to forces that would prey upon them and bureaucratic structures that would tear their families apart is sleazy and callous.

We can hope and pray the courts will determine the sanctuary cities ban also is unconstitutional: The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits unlawful search and seizure. Perhaps that will apply to protecting someone from being deported for changing lanes without turning on a blinker.

If Texans refuse to follow the Golden Rule, maybe the courts at least will force us to follow the Constitution.
