Policing the language and the laughter: Is it censorship? – San Francisco Chronicle
Posted: May 11, 2017 at 12:21 pm
The Federal Communications Commission has let it be known it is deciding whether to levy a fine on Stephen Colbert for making a vulgar joke about President Trump during a monologue on May 1. Furthermore, last week, Code Pink activist Desiree Fairooz was convicted of laughing during January confirmation hearings for Attorney General Jeff Sessions. And on Tuesday, May 9, reporter Dan Heyman was arrested for shouting questions at Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price at the West Virginia Capitol in Charleston.
From an essay by the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei that appeared in Sundays New York Times: At first glance ... censorship seems invisible, but its omnipresent washing of peoples feelings and perceptions creates limits on the information people receive, select and rely upon. ... Censoring speech removes the freedom to choose what to take in and to express to others, and this inevitably leads to depression in people. Wherever fear dominates, true happiness vanishes and individual willpower runs dry.
P.S. A few more pre-presidential mentions of Trump in the media, this one in our very own Chronicle: In 2005, when Carolyne Zinko profiled Cypress Semiconductor founder (then-CEO and president) T.J. Rodgers, he mentioned that his favorite TV shows didnt include The Apprentice. The way I feel about Donald Trump is the way priests, ministers and rabbis feel when they look at Jimmy Swaggart, he said. In the view of Rodgers, a corporate titan, Trump prostitutes the profession.
Furthermore, in 1998, filmmaker Tom Bullock worked on a never-released indie comedy acted and directed by John Broderick, onetime member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe. In the movie, set in Ukraine, a hotel maid suggests a scheme involving taking her beautiful girlfriend to the U.S. Well marry her off to someone like Donald Trump, and well all get rich, right? An American tourist responds, They never give up! The Russians never give up!
P.P.S. What a difference a year makes. Janice Hough notes that while much has been made of the age difference between French President-elect Emmanuel Macron, 39, and his wife, Brigitte, 64, no ones said very much about the ages of Trump, 70, and Melania, 46.
Following up:
That house on 14th Street, with the sign inviting passersby to vote on paint colors, was owned by the beloved art dealer Ruth Braunstein, who died last year. Its now owned by her daughter, jewelry designer Marna Clark, who writes that there were 100 votes and many comments. The best, she says, was a commenter who circled 20 votes and wrote Fake Votes next to the circle. The house will be up for rent soon.
Many readers wrote that BEAR DWN, on a license plate that mystified Eileen Denny Alexander, refers to the official slogan of University of Arizona athletic teams. The name of the campus gym is Bear Down, writes Scott McKinzie; Bear Down, Arizona! is the fight song, and the crowd at sporting events chants Bear Down. The football and basketball teams, however, are the Wildcats.
The bear in Bear Down, is not a noun but a verb. According to university legend, an auto accident in 1926 put the football teams quarterback on his deathbed. When his coach came to visit him, the stricken quarterback told him to tell the team to bear down.
A third of the San Francisco Giants players are working out wearing tDCS headsets that deliver a weak electric current to the brain to improve performance. This treatment is called transcranial direct current stimulation. This was confirmed early this week by Geoff Head, official sports scientist of the Giants.
But, with homage to Herb Caen, its not his name thats the item. Combined with training, this gizmo which retails for $749, but Im assuming the Giants get a discount is said to accelerate improvements in muscle memory, strength, explosiveness, and endurance.
Good luck to the Giants, and I suppose its good that theyre getting some help. But I cant understand why, if doping isnt allowed, this sort of treatment is OK.
P.S. In other sports news: The biggest victory on Monday, May 8, writes Dan St. Paul, was not the series-ending beatdown by the Warriors over the Jazz. It was the in-your-face shot block of Sally Yates on Ted Cruz. Standing O!

UNLEASHED: RON PAUL HAS WORDS FOR TRUMP
President Trump is about to embark on his first foreign trip, where he will stop in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican, before attending a NATO meeting in Brussels and the G-7 summit in Sicily. The media and pundits have loudly wondered why hasnt he gone on a foreign trip sooner. I wonder, why go at all? What does the president hope to achieve with these meetings? This is a president who came into office with promises that we would finally start to mind our own business overseas, declares Ron Paul.
Yes, that Ron Paul former presidential hopeful, longtime congressman, constitutionalist, physician, family guy, author, columnist, frugal thinker and independent icon who continues to demand peace and prosperity and personal freedom for Americans. Mr. Paul, in fact, will soon be in the nations capital for a rare and exclusive dinner with a select group of fans, complete with photo-ops and a $500 ticket price.
At 81, he is not done with vigorous, hybrid politics. Mr. Paul continues to insist that the U.S. stop meddling in complicated regions. He also longs for Mr. Trump to honor a campaign promise to end a policy of intervention and chaos overseas.
Yes, well. In a word, its complicated. The previous administration was skittish about red lines and content to lead from behind. Mr. Trump has been left to deal with the aftermath, where security threats and terrorism appear to have flourished in an unprotected vacuum. While the president is fond of robust solutions, hes also a quick study poised to foster a series of workable protocols.
And Ron Paul will be Ron Paul, eager to promote the idea that minding our own business and rejecting militarism makes the nation safer.
Maybe its time for the countries in the Middle East to solve their own problems, he says in a new column, published through the Ron Paul Institute
Many pundits complain that President Trump spends too much time golfing. I would rather he spend a lot more time golfing and less time trying to solve the rest of the worlds problems. We cannot afford to be the policeman or nursemaid to the rest of the world, particularly when we have such a lousy record of success, says Mr. Paul.
THE DEVICES TAKE OVER
CTIA, an trade group that tracks and represents the U.S. wireless communications industry, reports that Americans used 13.72 trillion megabytes of data in 2016. This is the equivalent of 1.58 million years of streaming videos, and 35 times the amount the nation used only five years ago.
There are now more smartphones, laptops and wireless-enabled tablets than people in the U.S. The devices now number 359.9 million, or 1.2 for every U.S. resident.
OBAMALARMISM
Former President Barack Obama looked stylish and relaxed as he arrived in Milan, Italy, on Tuesday just a day after entreating Senate Republicans to save Obamacare. Mr. Obama is in Italy for a two-day trip in which he will meet with former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and speak about climate change at a conference, reports The Daily Mail.
A 14-car convoy ferried Mr. Obama into the city to the hotel where he is staying. He wore shades and went tieless as he stepped out later in the day, waving and smiling to his Italian fans.
Mr. Obama gave a keynote speech on global warming, issuing this dire warning: When it comes to climate change, the hour is almost upon us.
Timing is everything, of course.
Mr. Obamas speech comes as President Trump is considering whether to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate change agreement, which was championed by his predecessor, The Mail noted.
JUST SAY NON to PARIS CLIMATE TREATY
Get us out of Paris, Mr. President. The Paris Climate Treaty, that is. A feisty group of 42 conservative and free market interest groups signed an open letter entreating President Trump to formally withdraw the U.S. from the agreement, signed by then-President Barack Obama and regarded by him as a treaty, though it was never submitted to the Senate for ratification.
The coalition includes The Heritage Foundation, Americans for Prosperity, Citizens Against Government Waste, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and the National Center for Public Policy Research, to name just a few.
President Trump has clearly signaled to American voters that his predecessors war on fossil fuels is over; now he needs to tell the rest of the world. Withdrawing from the Paris Climate Treaty would spell this out in neon letters, says Joseph Bast, president of The Heartland Institute, also a coalition member.
Withdrawing completely from Paris is a key part of your plan to protect U.S. energy producers and manufacturers from regulatory warfare not just for the next four years but also for decades to come, the groups write in their lengthy letter to Mr. Trump. We will strongly support your decision to keep your campaign commitment to withdraw.
FOXIFIED
Ignore chatter from Fox News Channel critics who suggest the networks ratings could be faltering. Theyre not, according to Nielsen Media Research. For the 18th consecutive week, Fox News is the leading network across the entire cable realm, besting news and non-news offerings alike. Twelve of the top 30 programs aired on Fox News. In the all-important prime-time hours, Fox drew 2.1 million viewers, MSNBC garnered 1.4 million, and CNN 778,000.

51 percent of Canadians say anti-government populism is not likely to emerge in Canada, 43 percent say it is likely to emerge, 1 percent say it is already happening.
45 percent say Canadians have not changed in the last decade, 27 percent say they have become more like Americans, 26 percent say they are less like Americans.

Armed conflicts: Nigeria to implement ECOWAS trans-human movement – The Nation Newspaper
Posted: at 12:19 pm
The Federal Government Thursday said it has domesticated the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trans-Human Movement Law and would commence its implementation.
President Muhammadu Buhari stated this at the 2017 National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja.
Buhari, who was represented by the Minister for Interior, Gen. Abdulraman Dambazau (rtd), said that the domestication became necessary in order to contain menaces of herders, militants and terrorists.
He said: ECOWAS protocol on free movement of goods and person has always been there from the word go but there is ECOWAS decision on trans-humans. That is movement from one country to another as herders.
The decision is that every country where these trans-humans come, they should prepare reception areas for them and issue them International trans-humans certificates for identification. They would also be monitored so that their movements are known.
So, this is an ECOWAS decision that was taken in 1998 but has not been implemented. ECOWAS is trying now to see how they can implement it so as to reduce the conflict going on between herders and farmers.
Buhari also attributed increase in crime rate to proliferation of small arms, noting that there were over 10 million illegal small arms in the country a decade ago.
He said: I did a research ten years ago and I discovered that over 10 million small arms and weapons were in the country and that was before Boko Haram and Niger Delta crisis.
I do not know the quantity as of today but certainly, they must have increased bearing in mind the flow of weapons from North Africa because of the Libyan and Malian crises.
Earlier in his address, Buhari said that armed Agro Rangers would be stationed in farms as part of measures to protect agricultural investment, farmers and herders.
He explained that the move would boost food security, economy and reduce incessant clashes.
He said government would pursue security governance initiatives that are broad based, adding that it had entered into bilateral and multilateral agreements with other stakeholders to improve nations security.
He assured of governments support in carrying out institutional reforms and restructuring to revamp police in line with global best practices.
He said government has launched national counter terrorism strategy, adding that security management was the responsibility of everyone including the international community.
Urging states to domesticate the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, Buhari said it would assist in harmonsing, punishing any criminal.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the police, Buhari noted that there was improved budgetary allocation for the force, urging organised private sector to invest more in security sector as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
In an aside interview with The Nation, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, said the way out of farmers-herders conflict was for Nigerians to be tolerant with each other.
He said: The main way to tackle the issue of herdsmen and farmers is for us to be our brothers keeper. We grew up in this country and we saw how people migrated to other places and settled peacefully. I think it is just the element of give and take that is lackingand like somebody observed, Nigerians are becoming intolerant of each other. Until we stop the intolerance and believe that we have to forego something in order to get something, the communal clashes and ethnic disagreements would continue.
The reason for the summit is for all stakeholders to assemble and proffer solutions to improving security across the country.
Highpoint of the event was the anti-kidnapping, K-9 and anti-explosives simulations exhibited by police operatives.

Deer found feasting on human remains – New York Post
Posted: at 12:18 pm
Forensic scientists have caught a deer munching on human remains for the first time ever.
The animal was snapped gnawing on bones by a motion-sensitive camera set up by researchers in Texas.
Footage captured the deer nibbling at rotting corpses inside a 26-acre body farm a section of woodland designed to allow researchers to watch cadavers decompose and discover which animals they attract.
Raccoons, turkeys, foxes and vultures are typically seen feasting on the bodies.
But this is the first time a white-tailed deer widely believed to be a herbivore has been captured munching on human remains.
The corpse had been outside for 182 days.
Experts from the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility at Texas State University watched as the animal held the bone in its mouth like a cigar on two occasions in January 2015.
A paper recently published in the Journal of Forensic Scientists, claimed this was the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains.
It added the deer was likely chewing on the bones because it was deficient in minerals and that they had no evidence it had eaten any flesh.
Its thought deer probably chomp on animal bones during winter to obtain minerals absent in their diet like calcium, sodium and phosphorous.

Human remains found at Arnold building site next to church – Nottingham Post

Police are at the scene of a building site next to a church in Arnold after human remains were dug up.
The site where the remains were discovered is next to Arnold Baptist Church in Cross Street.
Police are at the scene but have confirm that the remains are "thought to have been buried legitimately some time ago"
The church minister, Andrew Howe said: "Last night the police came to see us because some bones had been dug up at the site next door to the grave yard, where flats are being built.
"There is an old folk tale that says there was a body buried under the tree there but no one believed it.
The 70-year-old added: "Everyone buried in the grave yard area will be friends or relatives of the church but the fact that this grave didn't have a head stone means we don't know who it is.
"We will of course treat the remains with respect and when the police are finished with them we will hold a service and rebury the remains with dignity."
Mr Howe said services will go on at the church as normal while the police are looking into the incident.
The remains were discovered by builders from J Tomlinson, the Nottingham-based firm which is developing the site.
Mark Davis, chief executive of J Tomlinson, said: "Remains of a body were uncovered during excavation work yesterday, late afternoon by our site manager whilst undertaking work on our Ernehale site at Gedling.
"Work was immediately stopped, the site restricted and boarded off and the issue reported to police, principle designer and client.
"The matter is currently being investigated by the police."
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Officers were called at 4.15pm on Tuesday, May 9, to reports of human remains discovered following land development.
"Officers are now working with the local authority, the land owner and the church to establish the most appropriate way forward in relation to the human remains, which are thought to have been burred legitimately some time ago."
The police are not treating the incident as suspicious at this time.
J Tomlinson is building six houses and 12 new apartments on the site of former sheltered accommodation in Cross Street, Arnold.

RetroFuturism: For the fantastic, delusional dreams of our …
Posted: at 12:18 pm
Dreams of the future reveal more about the mind of the dreamer than the future itself.
This subreddit focuses on the futurist visions of eras past. However posts may also contain contemporary art with a retrofuturist theme.
Futurism was born out of humanity's reaction to a sudden thrust into technological revolution. To the many that witnessed the rapid change, it seemed technological utopia was fast approaching. This unbridled optimism caused the collective imagination to run wild.
Although many of these visions seem almost comical now - the spirit in which they were created is part of the reason you are currently looking into a glowing rectangle with unlimited, instant access to the sum of all human knowledge.
POSTING GUIDELINES:
Vintage =/= Retrofuturism
Vintage Sci-fi =/= Retrofuturism
Please avoid posting vintage technology, unless it has a intentionally and obviously "futuristic" design.
I will work to prevent default sub syndrome: clickbait titling, meme-ification, etc. So please watch the titling and try to be as informative as possible! Vast majority of submissions have been perfect for the sub and the community is great. Just want to nip any trends in the bud. I reserve the right prune low-quality and/or questionable content to keep the frontpage looking good!
Post only:
1. Futurist visions from eras past.

Bitcoin Prices Continue to Surge, Regularly Breaking Records – Futurism
Posted: at 12:18 pm
In Brief
Early adopters of Bitcoin, the novel currency sweeping the globe, have plenty to celebrate this year. The cryptocurrency has grown in value by 85 percent in 2017. It has enjoyed steady growth, topping $1,700 for the first time ever today. This is the latest milestone for the digital currency, however back in March, Bitcoin surpassed the value of gold for the first time in its history. And, there are no indications of it slowing down.
The previous success of the currency has been tied to the uncertainty in markets after the results of the 2016 US elections. However, that explanation cant continue its potency for thatlong. Even more, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) still has to rule on whether or not they will reverse a previous decision to reject a high profile exchange-traded fund (ETF), so the reasons behind the currencys burgeoning strength remain unclear.
Last month, Japanese policymakers made Bitcoin a legal method of payment. This was followed closely by an announcement that Russia would consider adopting Bitcoin (among other cryptocurrencies) in 2018. However, not all countries are readily willing to consider legitimizing Bitcoin. China, for example, has recently decided to restrict its trade.
Even with some minor hiccups, Bitcoin is set to revolutionize the way that we pay. Its footing keeps getting stronger as it continues to be the top-performing currency since the start of the decade, save for 2014.
The Japanese adoption of the currency could be a considerable boon toward it hitting the mainstream. Experts are expecting retailers in more than 260,000 stores across the country tobe accepting Bitcoin. The ease afforded by the currency being international could make it a favorite for travelers as well.
The future of Bitcoin may not be entirely clear. But, if this upward trend continues, it will be difficult for policymakers to deny its rightful place in the pantheon of finance.

A New Tube Transport System Could Get You From New York to Beijing in 2 Hours – Futurism
Posted: at 12:18 pm
In Brief Instead of just being regional, why not go international? That's the idea behind ET3's tube transportation concept, which it calls the "mag-lev limo." It would be capable of traveling from New York to Beijing in 2 hours. International and Global
Transportation of the future is being developedtoday: autonomous electric vehicles, flying cars, and thefuturistic pods that make up the Hyperloop are just a few notable examples. Theres another ideavying to be the next generation of public transportation, and while it might look something like the Hyperloop, this tube transport companys CEO Daryl Oster explains why its different:
ET3: we call it a mag-lev limo, where its a car-sized vehicle that operates in a network of tubes much [like] cars on a freeway, Oster told TechRepublic at the 2017 Smart Cincy Summit. But, it would be international and global in scope.
Our vision is being able to travel from, say, here in Cincinnati to the Taj Mahal in under three hours for 50 bucks, Oster added. Essentially, its a network of tubes that serve as a freeway whichcan be accessed viavarious points along its many routes.
While the ET3 is still in the concept phase, the Hyperloop has already moved further along the innovation highway. Since the idea was first pitched by serial entrepreneur and innovator Elon Musk in 2012, there are now two notable companies developing their own Hyperloop in the United States to Dubai.
One of these is Hyperloop One, which hasalready finished its test track in Nevada, as well as established plans for its future transport system in the U.S. Hyperloop One also hopes to develop a Hyperloop network in Dubai, with pods capable of traveling on roads. Meanwhile, Hyperloop Technologies Inc. (HTI) plans to connect all of Europeby way of a tube transportation network.
All of these move us closer to what Transit X CEO Mike Stanley calledthe impossible dream of making car-free cities within five years, as he toldTechRepublic.Maybe not exactly car-free: itll be more like a future with flying cars, autonomous cars, and tube cars but thats still pretty cool.

World-Renowned Physicist Explains How Our Universe Will End – Futurism
Posted: at 12:18 pm
In Brief A world-renowned theoretical physicist and professor at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) has a theory about how the universe will end. Based on the current rate of expansion, he predicts we'll eventually be left alone in an "island universe" that will be swallowed up by black holes after our stars burn up their fuel. The Nature of Black Holes
A world-renowned theoretical physicist and professor at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) has a theory on how the world will end, and while its not with the same Big Bang that began it, the event will be no less dramatic.
Mathematical physicistRobbert Dijkgraaf is director and Leon Lery Professor at the IAS. His research is largely focused on how mathematics and particle physics intersect, and he has made important contributions to the study of string theory. He has also developed formulas that have contributed to a greater understanding of the nature of black holes. Its black holes, in fact, that Dijkgraaf believes hold the key to the end of the world as we know it or, more accurately, the end of the universe as we know it.
Dijkgraaf explained his theory that black holes will eat up everything else in the universein a video forBusiness Insider.
Dijkgraaf explained that physicists have discovered in recent years that not only is the universe expanding, but forces are pushing it apart. The forces exist within voids and seem to be accelerating the universes expansion. Eventually, theyll reach speeds so fast (faster than the speed of light, he theorizes) that the distant galaxies we may not even be aware of yet will fade away, then the galaxies closer to us, until were living in what Dijkgraaf calls something of an island universe.
The implications of such cosmic expansion are not insignificant. When the galaxy is left alone in this kind of empty universe, the stars will go out one by one because they will burn their fuel. And if all the stars are done burning their fuel, the only force thats left is the force of gravity, Dijkgraaf explains. And it will slowly pull them in, and the black holes will eat up everything else in the universe, and this will be it.
Its a very desolate future for the universe, he adds, And I think thats why many physicists were very hesitant to believe that this is actually the true future history of the universe. But it turns out, that the experiments are all pointing in that direction.
As doomsday prophecy as Dijkgraafs assertions may sound, even if the universe does ultimately reach this rather dark (literally and figuratively) end, the event will no doubt be a thing of great beauty, too.
