Youth reminded of the Golden Rule at conference – South Peace News

Posted: at 3:47 pm

Left-right, are Lakeshore Regional Police Service Cst. Cory Cardinal, students from E.W. Pratt High School in High Prairie, Kerry Gardner and Kelsey Keay, guest speaker Dwayne Peace of Life Synergy for Youth, and Pratt students Ramirez Whitecap-Bear and Logan Laboucan.

Richard Froese Spotlight Local youth were warned about the dangers of social media, bullying, gangs, drugs and suicide during the Red Feather Conference at Sucker Creek First Nation on April 19-20.

Lakeshore Regional Police Service hosted the event with several speakers about the various issues youth face.

We addressed concerns and issues we have been advised about by community leaders and youth and we want to empower youth to give them the right tools to make wise decisions, says Cst. Cory Cardinal, who organized the event, for junior high school students on the first day followed by senior high students.

Do onto others what you would have them do to you was the main principle presented by main speaker Dwayne Peace, an educational consultant with Life Synergy for Youth and a retired police officer. Let that be your theme in life.

He also advised students to respect others and create positive messages.

If we could eliminate rumours, gossip and drama in schools, we would have a lot more safer schools, Peace says.

Digital dangers and harassment were prominent in his presentations.

Be careful what you tell and show people, especially with Iphones and smart phones, Peace says. Just because you have a smart phone, it doesnt mean you are a smart person.

Information and images are far-reaching and negative or disrespectful content has lasting risks.

It creates a public and permanent record, Peace says.

He also used the old saying that whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Whatever happens in Vegas, stays on Facebook, You Tube, and Twitterforever, Peace says. I dont think you should have a cell phone at school, period, Peace says. Cameras at parties are dangerous.

Out of stupidity, and poor judgment, youth can make bad decision and get images of themselves in uncompromising positions and situations.

For anyone considering exposing their bodies for lewd and nude photographs, you dont let anybody extort you, sextort you, Peace says.

Bullying was another hot topic.

Students being bullied often ask why its happening to them.

Its the bully who has the issues, its not them, Peace says. When you say something thats mean, rude or disrespectful, you need to apologize.

Television and the entertainment world have negatively influenced children and youth in many ways.

TV comedy shows have laugh tracks where the sound follows something that is done or said that it mean, rude, or disrespectful and that sends the wrong message, he say.

Lakeshore Cst. Elias Cunningham shared about the drug fentanyl.

It is 100 times more powerful than morphine and heroin, Cunningham says. Its being laced with other street drugs and its happening all over Alberta and Canada.

Police remain vigilant to monitor and control the drug.

We are starting to see more and more fentanyl, Cst. Cardinal says. This is one we want to target because its the most dangerous drugs.

Former Faust RCMP Cst. Perry Cardinal also offered advice about drugs and gangs, with more than 20 years in policing.

Youve got to be careful what you wear, says Cardinal, who started his career in 1998 with Faust RCMP where he served for almost eight years.

He advised youth to stay away from during and gangs and images related to them.

You represent something we dont want in schools, Cardinal says.

For adults, he recommends adults and community leaders get youth involved in good healthy and positive activities and held younger people who are in trouble.

Justin Trudeau to attend public fundraiser as Liberals resume high-profile events – Globalnews.ca

Posted: at 3:47 pm

By Joanna Smith The Canadian Press

OTTAWA Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised political donors would not get preferential access to his government, and now the Liberals are trying to show they mean it as they revive their high-profile fundraising efforts.

The prime minister will be appearing at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal for a federal Liberal party fundraiser Thursday evening, which is unremarkable except for the fact that anyone can go.

Anyone, that is, who has up to $250 to spare for a ticket, wants to give that money to the Liberal Party of Canada, and is not registered to lobby the PMO.

It is a chance for Liberal supporters to get a word or a selfie with the party leader, but it will also be a time when the Liberals can once again rely on their surest bet for topping up the party war chest as they prepare for the next election.

READ MORE:Liberals detail measures to ensure no preferential access at fundraisers

The Liberals brought in a moratorium on fundraising events featuring Trudeau and other ministers earlier this year as they worked to develop new rules in the wake of accusations they were providing preferential access to the prime minister and his cabinet in exchange for dollars from wealthy donors in private homes.

There was a pause on national fundraising events throughout the first quarter while stronger standards for open and transparent fundraising events were being prepared, Liberal party spokesman Braeden Caley said Wednesday.

The new system involves holding fundraisers featuring Trudeau or ministers only in public places, announcing them in advance, allowing the media to attend and disclosing the guest list within the following 45 days.

Some Liberals are pointing to that as one reason for lacklustre fundraising figures in the first three months of this year, when the Conservatives raised nearly twice as much money, from a bigger pool of contributors, even though they are in the midst of a leadership race that could be diverting would-be donations to the party.

READ MORE:Justin Trudeau says he has no problem answering questions from ethics watchdog

Theres a small connection, Caley said when asked whether the lower profile played a role.

According to the latest financial returns the parties filed with Elections Canada, the Liberal party brought in $2.8 million from 31,812 donors in the first quarter of 2017, while the Conservatives received $5.3 million from 42,473 contributors.

The Conservatives also outdid the governing Liberals in the first quarter of 2016, but by a smaller margin, and the red team brought in more than the blue team in the final two quarters of last year.

Caley pointed to the high proportion of donors who gave $200 or less as a sign of a strong grassroots base.

The Liberals are calling on the opposition parties to bring in their own transparency measures.

Soon, they might not have a choice, as the Liberal government promised legislation that would require similar disclosure for events involving party leaders and leadership candidates.

Canadians will know about the events in advance, where they are being held, the cost to attend, and they will know who attended them, Democratic Institutions Minister Karina Gould said in the House of Commons Monday as she revealed she is ready to move on an item in her mandate letter.

John OLeary, her spokesman, said the government aims to introduce the legislation this spring.

One Liberal source said the legislation will be essentially the same as the measures the party brought in, which would prevent the party having to once again change the way they are doing things.

One significant difference, according to two Liberal sources, will likely be the lack of a requirement to open the events up to the media, as there is recognition of the difficulty with any law aimed at governing the press.

The Conservatives and New Democrats say they do not plan on taking any lessons from the Liberals.

The reality is they werent able to follow their own set of rules the first time, said Conservative MP Blaine Calkins.

New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen said his skepticism stems from the way the Liberals abandoned a firm campaign pledge to change the way Canadians cast their ballots in time for the next election.

I have very, very low trust with this government when it comes to democratic reform, he said.

Things just got shaky for the last liberal democracy in Central Europe – PRI

Posted: at 3:47 pm

In a region awash in populist, euroskeptic andanti-immigrant sentiments, theCzech Republic has acted as the last bastion of liberal democracy butthat could soon change.

Although Czech President MilosZeman the self-proclaimed "Czech Donald Trump" is and has been notoriously xenophobic, power has lainprimarily in the hands of pro-EUPrime Minister BohuslavSobotka. Sobotka has beenleading the Czech Republic's coalition government as a memberof the center-left Social DemocraticParty since 2014.

But after ongoing conflict surrounding the taxes ofAndrej Babis, the country's finance minister,Sobotkaannounced his resignation on Tuesday. And he says he's taking parliament with him.

"It is unacceptable for the finance minister not to be able to prove the origins of his property," Sobotka said at a news conference. "Especially since he is a member of a government that has built its program on a fight against tax evasion."

Babis is the country's second-richest man. He founded the centrist, anti-corruption ANO (Czech for "yes") Party in 2011. As finance minister, his stated goal was to shake up a corrupt Czech government, using the managerial skills that made him such a successful businessman. As the BBC's Rob Cameron in Prague put it, Babiswanted to "drain the swamp Czech-style."

"Now Mr. Babisfinds himself at the center of a controversy over his own tax affairs," Cameron says."He'sbeen accused of basically buying 55 million euros of tax-free bonds from his own business empire."

With Sobotka's exit, and the country's lawmakers with him, the future of the Czech government is completely up to President Zeman. And it seems no one is certain what he will do.

"He's an unpredictable character," says Cameron.

Cameron says Zemancould do anythingfrom delay Sobotka's resignation,to appoint a new prime minister and caretaker government. But any government established by Zeman would surely stand in stark contrast to the oneled by Sobotka.

Zeman and Babis are both known for euroskeptic rhetoric, leading some to worry that their leadership will invite the creeping populism now common in surrounding countries like Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.

"Pro-Russian, euroskeptic governments and politicians. Autocratic, anti-liberal democracy," Cameron says. "Some observers do believe that is what is on the way herein the Czech Republic."

The country is due to hold parliamentary elections in less than six months. Cameron saysBabis and the ANO Party are currently polling at 30 percent, while the Social Democrats are polling at 15 percent.

"One thing is certain [President Zeman] will milk this to the full," says Cameron. "This really puts him in the spotlight and it casts him in the light as a 'power broker' and that's a role he will enjoy very much."

Commentary: Liberal women must stop trying to fight sexism with sexuality – TheBlaze.com

Posted: at 3:47 pm

Dear progressive women who think using their sexuality as a weapon in combating sexism: Youre wrong.

Some of you like to be referred to as nasty women as if its a credit to your intellect.

Some of you think that wearing hats that resemble vaginas is a show of solidarity amongst your gender but just because you have a vagina doesnt make you any different from women who usetheir bodies for personal, professional or financial gain, and who are often the verypeople you rail against in secret.

Some of you proudly call yourselves sluts and worse and become offended when others wrongfully agree with you.

Some of you think that feminism entitles you to match the lowest wits of the very men whose actions you lament, lowering yourselves to levels that you claim to abhor.

Heres the thing: Using your sex to fight sexism is meaningless.

Feminism by its very definition is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. Its got nothing to do with one-upping a man in a beer-drinking contest. Its got nothing to do with parading your female body parts around for all to see and expect no negative reaction.

When did supporting your fellow woman have to become so vulgar?

Since Donald Trump became president (and before, to be fair; but much more as of late, it would seem), women from all walks of life have been coming out of the woodwork in droves, flaunting their assets and using colorful language to highlight their intellectual superiority as if they think its the way to get on par with men.

Women dont need raunchy sexuality to make a point. And they certainly arent taken seriously by those whose respect theyre demanding when the aforementioned actions are the ones they take to prove theyre bigger, better, smarter, faster, and more apt to get ahead in life.

Never before has there been such a divide between what many women consider female empowerment and what it really is.As a result, the actions that some take are setting the movement back decades. What women today are seeing is a watered-down version of feminism, complete with cheap shots intending the world to know that, somehow, genitals and lewd behavior equal dominance and power.

Many feminists use The Feminine Mystique as their female version of a bro bible. But if more women were looking toward Proverbs 31, their interpretation of what it means to be a strong, empowered woman might change, and thus, the world around them.

Proverbs 31:10-31 reads:

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Isnt that the type of woman youre really aiming to be, despite freeing the nipple, protesting to burn down the White House and organizing things called Slut Walks? Dont you want to be and be seen as noble, hard-working, wise, strong, giving, loving, dignified, beloved and honored? What could be more revered than all of those traits combined?

Heres a newsflash: Many actions of women today are more crass than class, and trying to outdo every action that they despise in order to spite those who do them makes them look foolish and weak.

When women lower themselves to taking the same actions of the dregs of societys opposite sex, theyre not proving Anything you can do, I can do better.

Actually, yes, they are. And is that really the message they want to be sending to their fellow women or the next generation of women wholl inhabit our world?

Hopefully not.

Feminism used to stand for equality, strength, unity and respect.

Somewhere the message got lost in a cloud of crass vulgarities, and it feels like its finally boxed itself into a space where theres no going back.

Critics unfairly attack Sen. Mark Green – The Tennessean

Politics is a contact sport, but that doesnt mean that it should get ugly.

Unfortunately this is precisely what is happening with the character assassination of state Sen. Mark Green, M.D, a true public servant whohas dedicated much of his professional life to serving others and now President Trumps pick to be the next Secretary of the Army.

His appointment should be a proud moment for the Volunteer State that knows firsthand that Senator Green is a selfless patriot who loves our country and has put on the uniform to fight for our precious freedoms.

But because Mark Green is a man of faith, critics are seizing on a handful of statements that are purposefully drawn out of context to paint himas intolerant of others.

I know that the disingenuous attacks against Senator Green are categorically false.

The real Senator Mark Green is the man that is fighting for the least among us. I have seen this firsthand.

Thats because while our Latino community is making great strides in recent years, there is also another reality of far too many Latinos struggling to get by. That means that many Latinos with children are unable to exercise true school choice.

They would like to have the same opportunity that others have of being to send their children to a private school of their choice or be able to move to a different neighborhood with a high performing school.

The truth is that SenatorGreen did not look the other way as our Latino community asked for more choice in education. He stepped up while others were taking orders from special interest groups thatare more interested protecting their members than truly empowering low-income minority families from being able to exercise school choice. Some progress on this front has been done, but much more work remains.

Mark Green(Photo: Jed DeKalb)

Senator Green has also distinguished himself in the Legislature as a leader on veteran issues.

Thanks to his efforts, our veterans and their families have had a true champion fighting for them to ensure that they receive the benefits they deserve.

As a veteran himself, Senator Green understands the unique challenges our military and our veterans are facing. He is constantly looking to improve the efficiency on ways we can deliver care to our community and its no surprise that President Trump has picked Senator Green to bring this same passion and dedication to the U.S. Army.

Dr. Green has said that he believes that every American has a right to defend their country regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion. I believe every single word and I know that many Latinos in our community are supporting him even in the face of ugly and vicious attacks.

In a democracy like ours, we can disagree on substance and policy. In fact, we should welcome a spirited debate of ideas. But flat out distortions and lies have no place in our democratic government.

The president needs someone to lead the U.S. Army during this critical juncture in our countrys history. Senator Green is the right man for this challenge and we hope that will be confirmed expeditiously so he can get to work right away for the American people.

Budget deal the work of centrists – Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

Posted: at 3:46 pm

The imprint of the author of The Art of the Deal was conspicuously missing from a new federal budget agreement that ignored the draconian proposals President Donald Trump sought for fiscal year 2018.

The $1.16 trillion deal for the next five months that raised the federal debt ceiling was a temporary victory for centrists, extending a budget approved during the Obama administration. The next federal fiscal year budget begins Oct. 1.

The agreement was reached by a coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats, leaving the Freedom Caucus the far-right tea party group that includes Rep. Rod Blum, R-Dubuque outside looking in. According to the Washington Post, the White House was excluded from discussions, its participation deemed as unhelpful by congressional aides.

For his proposed fiscal 2018 skinny budget, Trump wants a 9 percent or $54 billion increase in military spending 3 percent more than envisioned along with a larger increase for Homeland Security and his border wall.

To offset those costs, the White House targeted 62 domestic programs environmental, health and medical research, the arts, after-school programs, community development, aid to low-income families and subsidies for rural airports among them for elimination. Others faced drastic cuts, including agriculture.

They were spared for now, including Planned Parenthood funding, long in conservatives cross hairs, as the domestic budget was increased by $5 billion.

Democrats were quick with self-congratulatory declarations, claiming leverage, particularly in the Senate where Republicans hold a 52-48 majority but require 60 votes to pass most legislation. Many moderate Republicans were wary of the impact of Trumps proposed cuts on their constituencies.

I think its great that the Democrats like the bill, said White House budget director Mick Mulvaney. We thought it was a really good deal for this administration as well.

Mulvaney claimed the administration didnt push for bricks and mortar for the wall but new fixes instead, belying its quest to start 14 miles of construction near San Diego. While the White House contends the wall will be built, it must overcome concerns of many border state and moderate Republicans as well as Democrats concerning its cost and effectiveness.

While Trump didnt get his $1 billion down payment on the wall, $1.5 billion was allocated for increased border protection, including improving the fence dividing California and Arizona from Mexico, while adding sensors and lights.

However, his Executive Order to immediately hire 5,000 new Border Patrol agents was pared to 100.

The congressional negotiators approved $21 billion in higher defense spending $6 billion in budget increases and $15 billion from an off-budget war fund about two-thirds of what Trump wanted.

Among the survivors and those averting substantial cuts were:

The Essential Air Service program for rural airports, providing Waterloo with an annual $945,546 subsidy for 13 American Airlines weekly flights, which emerged intact.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, which got an additional $2 million instead of extinction.

Public broadcasting, which maintained its budgets.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which lost $13 million rather than facing Trump reforms with an unspecified cost, while the Public Health Preparedness and Response Center, which prepares for a bioterrorism attack or pandemic, was fully funded.

The National Institutes of Health, which received a $2 billion increase instead of $5.8 billion in cuts, for research into Alzheimers disease, antibiotic resistance and other treatments and cures.

The Environmental Protection Agency, which retained 99 percent of its funding rather than a 31 percent cut. However, its staffing is at Reagan era levels.

The food stamp program, which took a $2.4 billion hit based on declining enrollment.

Planned Parenthood, which received funding for Medicaid patients (about 40 percent of its budget).

In addition, $130 million was allocated to fight opioid addiction and $30 million for mental health programs.

Some budget items were directed at Trump:

An additional $61 million was approved to pay local law enforcement agencies for the cost of protecting Trump and his family at the Trump tower in New York City and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla.

All Executive Orders are required to have cost estimates. Trump has issued 30.

While the agreement averted a government shutdown, Trump later tweeted a good shutdown in the fall was needed to force a partisan confrontation over spending, including a reversal of Senate rules effectively requiring a supermajority to pass most major legislation.

Well find out then whether this coalition will hold amid his proposed tax cut forecast to reduce revenues by $5.5 trillion over 10 years and still unannounced $1 trillion infrastructure plan.

Meanwhile Trump and Congress continue to ignore entitlement reforms (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the like), which constitute 60 percent of the federal budget.

Guest column: Don’t keep secrets from your financial adviser – Asheville Citizen-Times

Posted: at 3:46 pm

Katherine Morosoni, Special to the Citizen-Times 10:13 a.m. ET May 4, 2017

How do I know if I am on the right path? is my favorite question I hear as a financial adviser.

I had a couple in their 30s in my office, and they asked this question. I love this question because it gives me permission to become their partner in their financial success. We talked about their liabilities and assets so credit card debt and credit score, their house value, their mortgage value, their emergency fund amount, their income and expenses, the what ifs and their future plans.

Emotions make it hard to know if you are doing the right things.

The couple shared that they felt they were barely surviving and keeping their head above water. They did not feel that they are where they should be. Listening to them, I saw a different situation. I saw a couple aligned and on the right path to creating their financial success. They are aligned because they agreed to meet with me.

Treat your adviser like a professional partner.

Would you tell your doctor only some of your symptoms for the correct medical diagnosis? As a client partner, I need to know more than just the numbers of their financials. I need to know about their family, their work, their play, their plans and then their money. By looking at all aspects of their life, I can make sure we are planning correctly for all of life facets.

If clients tell me what they think I want to hear, we cannot plan around the unknowns. For example, if a client experiences a job change, we as a team can better position the job changer to know how long will their cash reserves last? Are there other options we utilize to help weather that life change? If I do not know about a clients full situation, then my recommendations will have serious gaps or could be the wrong solutions.

Work from the facts of the situation.

One of the hardest things is to be honest with yourself about where you really are. This couple have not been perfect but they have chosen well on many financial decisions and actions. They have an emergency fund that easily covers emergency expenses.

Compared to their peers, their credit score was high and enviable. Their liabilities were manageable, credit card debt was under control and while there is a mortgage, they have already paid enough to build equity in their home. They started planning their retirement through their rollover IRAs from a previous job.

Life happens, are you ready for the unexpected?

The couple wisely have protected each other in case of the unexpected. All family members have health care. If someone dies unexpectedly, the survivor is covered with a life insurance policy that will pay off the mortgage and give the survivor a years income to get back on their feet.

I assigned them homework for the areas of concern that include getting a will and designating who will become their childrens legal guardian if something happened to them both. Another area of concern was that they compared themselves to others they know and where this couple thinks those other people are in their financial journey. My advice is people need to run their own race and not compare themselves to what they think is going on with others. As my dad reminds me, you never know what goes on behind closed doors.

What I love about people who ask the question, How do I know if I am on the right path? is that they are opening themselves up, welcoming an outsider, professional opinion on the decisions they have made. They are also willing to accept suggestions on what they can adjust. Part of my job is to partner with people, develop a financial wellness strategy, advise them on paths to reach their goals. In the hard times, when it feels nothing is going right, I show them their big picture of their financial goals and how it may not feel like it, but they are progressing toward their financial independence. It all starts with being vulnerable and asking How do I know if I am on the right path?

SeaLand: Canada Freight Forwarders eManifest Guidelines – American Journal of Transportation

Posted: at 3:44 pm

By: AJOT | May 04 2017 at 11:02 AM | LinerShipping

The CBSA issued a new Customs Notice on mandatory electronic house bills, which advises that in cases where freight forwarders are NOT ready to transmit eHBLs (electronic House Bills of Lading), the pre-existing process of submitting supplementary data and presenting paper house bills can continue to be used. If house bill and / or supplementary reports are on file and in good standing for a consolidated shipment, the shipment will continue to move. According to the notice, CBSA will provide adequate notice as to when supplementary data will no longer be accepted.

The notice also states that the requirement to transmit eHBLs and supplementary data is the responsibility of the freight forwarder (who is defined as a person who, on behalf of one or more owners, importers, shippers or consignees of goods, causes specified goods to be transported by one or more carriers). Accordingly, freight forwarders who meet this definition may transmit supplementary data or house bill data using their own carrier code. SeaLand will continue to submit supplemental bills until otherwise directed by CBSA, but will not submit eHBL data on behalf of freight forwarders.

The implementation timeline for eHBL remains the same as previously announced, i.e.:

A Sub Location Code is an identifier of the primary location/warehouse where the goods are to be stored pending clearance.
