Pit bull thriving after being rescued from euthanasia – KKTV 11 News
Posted: May 4, 2017 at 3:53 pm
PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - Once upon a time, the future looked bleak for a pit bull puppy.
The 5-month-old flunked an aggression test and was scheduled for euthanization.
"We have to make our decision based on what we feel is safe for the community," Julie Justman, director at Pueblo Animal Services, explained at the time. "We take that part of our job very seriously."
The pup had been found by the side of the road in March and brought to the Pueblo branch of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Justman explained that all animals brought to the shelter undergo the behavior assessment and also have their behavior monitored from the moment they show up.
"It concerns me even more that this puppy is showing this behavior at that young an age," Justman said, calling the puppy controlling and hyper.
It didn't sit well with Kent Hill that everyone was ready to give up on the dog.
"It was such a little dog, it's just a little puppy, 5 months old. It could have such a great future. It's still learning, it can grow out of any tendencies," Hill said at the time.
Hill wanted to adopt the dog from the moment he laid eyes on it and was convinced it could be rehabilitated. He had adopted pit bull mix eight years before from the same shelter, also slated for euthanization because of behavior issues. Bruno is now a therapy dog.
The shelter was first adamant that it would not change its mind, telling 11 News that once a dog fails its behavior test, it's a matter of public safety to not let that dog be adopted.
Intense interest the community showed in Hill's fight for the dog ultimately convinced the shelter to transfer the puppy to a shelter with a behavior specialist and try to give it another shot.
Hill contacted 11 News Wednesday with the good news: the specialist had informed him the behavior training was complete and the dog was now up for adoption.
"They evaluated her over a weekend and then contacted me on a Monday and they said, 'Do you still want to adopt this puppy? Because is you dont, we have several staff members that would like to adopt her.' I said yes. I most definitely want this puppy."
Hill said the dog is a model pup.
"At 6 month old, she's gentle. She's fantastic with kids. She's great with patients. She's already providing therapy to hurting patients.
"Shes been exceptional since the day I brought her home. Shes been the most exceptional puppy I have ever owned."
Hill said he was grateful to 11 News for the story we did in late March and the efforts of other Pueblo residents to make sure the puppy survived.
"You saved this puppy. The people of Pueblo saved this puppy."
He hopes that his story will help shelters realize that "bad" dogs can be rehabilitated.
"The evaluation process to determine whether a dog lives or dies I think needs to be reassessed. Whoever is doing these evaluations is putting to death savable, adoptable, very incredible, good animals."
The humane society released a statement after learning of the adoption.
"We are very happy there was a positive outcome for this dog, and we are grateful to our behavior modification rescue partners for their help in cases like this. We've made huge strides in saving more animals than ever before over the past several years. We would love to develop our own behavior modification program at the shelter in the future when funding is available."
May Hill, Bruno and the newest member of their family live happily ever after.

A sign in support of Buck, a German short-haired pointer, rests on the floor Tuesday night at City Hall. A group came to the city commission meeting to support saving the dog from euthanasia.

About 40 people arrived Tuesday at the Manhattan City Commission meeting in support of saving a dog from euthanasia.
Nineteen people in that group from Manhattan, Junction City, Milford, Clay Center, Dwight and St. George spoke to the commission for nearly an hour on behalf of Buck, a German short-haired pointer that is 4 or 5 years old.
Buck has been in the citys T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter after biting a 2-year-old child twice last week. The shelter adopted him out last week.
Jim Fawcett of Junction City said Buck is a symbol for millions of other dogs in shelters around the country.
If I have taught (my kids) anything, its that if you believe in something strong enough, dont be afraid to stand up and be counted, he said. Theres a whole lot of people that have stood up for this dog to be counted.
Chris Soupene of Manhattan tried to adopt Buck after the incidents, but he said the shelters policy is not to adopt out dogs that have shown aggressive tendencies.
A Save Buck petition started Monday morning by Soupene on ipetitions.com had 2,630 signatures as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the petition, Buck was neutered April 23 and adopted by a family with a two-yearold child April 24.
After returning the dog, the family contacted Soupene and asked him to adopt Buck since he originally gave up his spot for the family to get the dog instead.
Buck is currently under a 10-day quarantine until Friday because the dog doesnt have his rabies shots.
City manager Ron Fehr called it an unfortunate situation. He said the investigation is still ongoing, but he will make the final decision after input from city staff and shelter officials.
We understand this is a very emotional issue, Fehr said. We are continuing to investigate, compile and analyze all the facts in the case.
Those who spoke mentioned how the shelter sent Buck to a family with a small child too soon after being neutered, and he was still in pain.
They said the shelter killing Buck is the wrong solution.
Pat Collins spoke as a dog lover, but he did use an example from his job as Riley County emergency management director. In early 1990s, the county would set off all of its sirens whenever there was a tornado warning anywhere in Riley County.
Collins said the county changed that after nursing homes and hospitals complained about evacuating people for a warning that happened on the other end of the county. Policies need to be evaluated and reviewed, he said. Every once in awhile, well get extraordinary circumstances that come about that may make you change policies. In addition to speaking for Buck, many people also advocated for Emily Fawcett, owner of The Pampered Pet in Junction City.
Fawcett said she wants to take Buck into her rescue facility.
We have not been able to find any case where liability has been transferred back to a city after transferring a dog over to a rescue, she said.
Soupene said he felt somewhat responsible because he didnt adopt Buck the first time. He said hes fine with Buck getting another chance with Fawcett.
I gave him up once, he said. If this means Buck can survive by going somewhere else, Im more than willing to do that.

Scientists to identify victims of Nazi euthanasia – The Times of Israel
Posted: at 3:53 pm
BERLIN (AFP) A German network of leading science institutes will begin identifying thousands of brain specimens belonging to people killed by the Nazis because they suffered from a disability or were ill.
The three-year-long research project into the specimens in the Max Planck institutes possession will begin in June, and aims to build a database listing the names of all euthanasia victims.
It will include basic biographical data on the victims, their institutional treatment, and the criteria used to select the victims, the Munich-based, nonprofit Max Planck Society said in a statement.
The manner of their death will also be documented along with data on the removal of the brain and the research carried out on (it).
In this Dec. 5, 1931 file photo, Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialists, is saluted as he leaves the partys Munich headquarters. (AP, File)
Adolf Hitlers so-called euthanasia program, in which doctors and scientists actively participated, sought to exterminate the sick, the physically and mentally disabled, those with learning disabilities and those considered social misfits.
Between January 1940 and August 1941, doctors systematically gassed more than 70,000 disabled people at six sites in German-controlled territory, until public outrage forced them to end the overt killing.
But tens of thousands more died across Europe until the Nazis were defeated in 1945, through starvation, neglect or deliberate overdoses administered by caregivers.
Many also underwent bizarre medical experiments and forced sterilizations because of their supposed genetic inferiority.
After the war, Max Planck had sought to inter all human remains belonging to victims of the Nazis in its possession.
But it later emerged that institutes within the grouping dealt with the issue in different ways.
While the institute for brain research decided to part with all specimens dating from between 1933 and 1945, the institute of psychiatry only removed items which were unambiguously documented as victim-derived or whose origins were uncertain around 30 percent of the overall inventory.
In 2014, a new employee at the archives in Berlin stumbled across a shoebox-sized wooden box containing slides with brain sections.
The find led to further investigations which turned up additional brain sections and preserved specimens, said Max Planck.
The psychiatry institute then commissioned an external specialist to draw up a rough inventory outlining the historical documents and brain sections in its storage facilities.

Completed in February 2017, the inventory lists 24,500 specimens from the 1920s through to the 1980s and serves as preparation for the identification project.
Underlining the Herculean task ahead, the projects researchers acknowledged that it will not be possible in the course of this project to undertake a more extensive reconstruction of every victims biography in view of the large numbers of victims of whom there may potentially be several thousand.
It would appear realistic at best to recreate the life stories of just a few by way of example, they added.
The non-governmental Max Planck Society, with an annual budget of 1.8 billion euros ($2.0 billion), operates more than 80 research institutes.

Leader of Philly prostitution ring gets 37 to 74 years in prison – Philly.com
Posted: at 3:51 pm
The head of a crime ring found guilty of coercing drug-addicted women to live and work as prostitutes at several motels in Northeast Philadelphia was sentenced Thursday to 37 to 74 years in prison.
John C. Guerra, 41, shook his head from side to side as Common Pleas Court Judge Sean F. Kennedy announced his sentence on 13 charges including human trafficking, sexual exploitation of a minor and corruption of minors, conspiracy, assault and drug dealing.
Among the women Guerra was convicted of pimping was A.H., a 17-year-old drug-addicted runaway from Bucks County whom he picked up on the streets of Kensington. The Inquirers policy is to withhold the identities of victims of sexual crimes without their consent.
According to state Senior Deputy Attorney General Heather Castellino, who handled the case with state prosecutor Michelle Laucella, Guerra and three other members of his ring fed A.H.s drug habit while forcing her to have sex with men 10 to 15 times a day, seven days a week.
Castellino said Guerra also raped and beat A.H. and other women whom he pimped.
This was one of the most heinous crimes that I have sat through in six years sitting on the bench, Kennedy told Guerra. The abuse you inflicted on these women. They will never be the same.
Over the last decade, law enforcement has recast prostitution from victimless crime to human trafficking as the reality of the lives of many sex workers has become better known.
In March, the Philadelphia law firm Kline & Specter filed the first-of-its-kind lawsuit against the owners and operators of the Roosevelt Inn in Northeast Philadelphia on behalf of a teenage girl who was pimped in one of its rooms for two years.
The lawsuit, filed under a 2014 Pennsylvania law that allows victims of sex traffickers to sue hotels and motels where abuse occurs, contends that the runaway 14-year-old girl was sold into sexual slavery.
The lawsuit, which did not involve the Guerra operation, is pending in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court.
Before he was sentenced, Guerra apologized for what he did and said that in prison he was trying to better my life and become educated and try to be an upright member of society. Im sorry for what happened in this whole mess.
Defense attorney Stephen T. OHanlon told Kennedy that Guerra had made efforts at self-reform and argued that Guerra deserved credit for agreeing to a nonjury trial, which saved the court system money and did not force the victims to testify before a jury panel.
OHanlon argued that another member of the ring, Elton Cromwell, was responsible for abusing A.H., and that Cromwell was sentenced to only six to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty in 2012.
Cromwell, 40, of Brooklyn, N.Y., is scheduled to go to trial next Thursday in Bucks County Common Pleas Court on charges that he tried to intimidate witnesses in the prosecution of the Guerra ring.
Two other members of the ring also pleaded guilty. Duane Roger Thomas, 31, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was sentenced to two to four years in prison. Edinelson Mendez Jr., 26, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to two years probation.
According to Castellino, Guerras operation was active from 2008 through 2010, booking his prostitutes for days at motels including the Roosevelt Inn and the Days Inn, both on Roosevelt Boulevard in the Northeast.
For Guerra, who was a fugitive for four years after his ring was busted, prostitution was a family business. Last June, his younger brother Jason Guerra, now 38, was sentenced to 48 to 96 years in prison by a Philadelphia judge for operating his own prostitution ring that preyed on drug-addicted runaway girls and women.
Castellino argued that John Guerra should be sentenced to 72 to 144 years in prison because hes the one that taught his younger brother Jason the trafficking business.

8million worth of fake designer goods seized in Manchester raids – Cumbria Crack
Posted: at 3:51 pm
More than 270,000 in cash was recovered
Millions of pounds worth of fake designer goods were seized after raids in North Manchester.
Officers executed warrants at homes, businesses and storage units in Strangeways today, Thursday 4 May 2017, and the early hours of Tuesday 3 May 2017.
It forms part of a joint operation with GMPs Challenger team dedicated to targeting organised crime as well as partners from Trading Standards, Visas and Immigration and the designer brands to clamp down on the sale of counterfeit goods.
An estimated 8million worth of items were seized including clothes, sunglasses, jewellery and perfume.
As part of the searches, more than 270,000 in cash was also recovered.
A 44-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering as well as counterfeit and trademark offences.
Both have been released under investigation.
Detective Inspector Paul Walker, from GMPs Challenger Manchester Team, said: These raids are a great example of successful partnership working investigating the counterfeit world.
The raids took place following intelligence from our partners and send out the clear message that fakes are illegal and will not be tolerated by the police.
People often see selling knock-offs as a victimless crime but buying these goods helps to line the pockets of criminals which can often fund more sinister crimes.

‘We should be treating Joey Barton rather than taking away his livelihood’ – Robbie Savage responds to your tweets – Mirror.co.uk
Posted: at 3:51 pm
Rarely, if ever, has a Robbie Savage column polarised public opinion as sharply as his insistence that Joey Barton's 18-month ban from football is excessive' for a victimless 'crime'.
In essence, Savage believes the FA's draconian sanction which effectively brings the curtain down on Barton's caereer, as he will be 36 before he is allowed to play again was using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.
Here, in our weekly Sav Says trawl through his online postbag, Mirror Sport's most-read pundit answers your points of view on the big Barton debate...

Ollie Olly Oli @OllieClaco1882: Let's be honest, Joey Barton has had this coming to him for years! Good bloody riddance. Awful footballer that thinks rules don't apply to him SAV SAYS : Well, he isn't an 'awful' footballer, for a start. He's good enough to have won an England cap and played his entire career at Premier League or Championship level. Yes, he has been involved in misdemeanours in the past, but he has paid the price for them. I just feel this punishment is out of proportion with the nature of the offences.
Brendan Crisp @brendancrisp: He received a letter from the FA about his gambling, he chose to ignore it. If you ignore it then it just gets worse like toothache SAV SAYS : This is where Joey has let himself down, Brendan. If he has ignored a written warning from the FA to curb his betting habits, he can't expect to get a three-match ban, a fine and a slap on the wrist. But if you have an addictive personality or addictive genes and I know people for whom that is a dominant part of their make-up it probably takes more than a letter to stop your compulsive habit. If a heavy drinker got a letter from Alcoholics Anonymous warning him to cut down on his alcohol intake, would he be able to go down the pub, have one pint and go home again? Probably not. If Joey Barton's betting is caused by an addiction, as he admits, I feel we should be placing more emphasis on treating the addiction than taking away his livelihood.
Lord Vegetable @HenrikVegetable: Does it cloud judgement if you have a contract with a betting company? SAV SAYS : No, your Lordship, my judgement is not clouded in the slightest. Whoever paid me or employed me, I would still take issue with the length of Barton's ban. In my opinion, it's too much. But since you raise the issue of my links with bookmakers William Hill, I am acutely aware of the nature of their industry, their investment in football as sponsors and their #GambleResponsibly hashtag. I am also proud to be ambassador for their charity, and my involvement in building a school classroom and providing fresh water to a remote village in Kenya. They do a fantastic amount of good with their Close To Home initiative and supporting the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research. Call me a hypocrite if you like, but I have never hidden my connections with William Hill because I regard those charitable projects as privileges.
Mark Nesbitt @marknesbitt_P3: Seems the FA view this addiction differently to drugs/alcohol or is it just because it's @Joey7Barton? If he had been addicted to an illegal drug/alcohol he would have been treated differently as per @PaulMerse #tonyadams SAV SAYS : I don't know whether the FA apply the rulebook in relation to gambling any different to cases involving alcohol or misuse of drugs, and it's not for me to set the tariff for players who find themselves involved in disciplinary cases. But in my view, addictions whether they involve drink, so-called recreational drugs or gambling need to be treated with compassion, not a big stick. And like you, Mark, I wonder if Joey Barton's reputation has gone before him in this case.
Andrew Murray @aMurrayMusic: A continuously naughty child first gets lines, then detention... suspended... expelled. Same thing. SAV SAYS : I'm not sure you can treat this case as one strike, two strikes, three strikes and you're out. Yes, I accept that in many workplaces and other walks of life, you might get a verbal warning, a written warning and then you're fired if you repeatedly flout the rules. But in many cases, those employees would be a liability because their conduct is damaging their companies' output or reputation. Of course Barton is in the wrong, and we have to protect football's integrity, but he has still added value to the teams he has been playing for. That's why I still maintain his betting 'crimes' have been victimless.
Andy Wilson @Andy_Wilson68: So what should the punishment be? SAV SAYS : Good question, Andy, and it goes to the heart of my column. If you look at the penalties handed out for alleged racist remarks to opponents, kung-fu kicks on spectators, doping offences or biting opponents, none has come close to the 18-month ban Barton has incurred. Betting against your own team crosses a line, and it is right that he should be suspended. But in my opinion, a six or eight-month ban would have been sufficient, with the rest of it suspended for the remainder of his career, and Joey would have to go on an education course to tackle his compulsive betting under the auspices of the PFA players' union. For me, that would serve both as a deterrent and show an element of compassion in recognition that gambling addiction is an illness.

Gail Hawthorn @ghawthorn86: If you break rules you're sanctioned. Simple fundamental rule of life. Your examples are all heated moments on the pitch, this is pre-conceived SAV SAYS : I understand the difference, Gail, and I don't dispute your basic precept: If you break the rules, you get punished. But Barton's betting misdemeanours didn't harm anyone, whereas heat-of-the-moment incidents can do terrible damage. A single punch, for example, may not be a premeditated act of violence, but it can cause terrible harm.
Andrea Gledhill @a_gledhill: Disagree, he knows the rules and think he can flout them just because he can. Don't do the crime if you can't take the consequences SAV SAYS : I get that, Andrea and I have no qualms about Joey being punished. It's just the severity of the punishment that doesn't sit right with me.
AND FINALLY...
BBC 5 live Sport @bbc5liveSport: The chicken was dry - When @RobbieSavage8 stood up to manager John Toshack's decision to change Wales' food SAV SAYS : Our Monday night think-tank Flintoff, Savage and the Ping Pong Guy is still No.1 in the podcast charts, which is incredibly gratifying, and this week's programme included a segment on times when you felt let down by your team-mates. I picked out the time when John Toshack took over as Wales manager from Mark Hughes and where 'Sparky' had placed a high emphasis on the importance of nutrition and gave us a wide choice of healthy options to refuel, Mr Toshack abolished the popular menu and replaced it with fried bananas and dry chicken. No sauce, no gravy, just dry chicken. I agreed with a few of the lads that we should make our feelings known to Toshack and I piped up at a meeting that dry chicken was not going to make us run faster or play better, believing some of my team-mates would back me up. But when I had finished saying my piece, they all stayed silent. Dry chicken wasn't the only factor, but I never played for Wales again.

Shane McCollum downloaded the sickening videos and still images from peer to peer file sharing sites on the internet and used them for sexual arousal.
He started by watching adult pornography but when it no longer aroused him he moved on to child images and sought ever more extreme material.
He was caught with 171 movies in the most extreme category A, Exeter Crown Court was told.
McCollum, aged 37, of Rising Sun, Dalwood, near Axminster, admitted three counts of making indecent images of children and one of possessing extreme images.
He was jailed for 15 months, suspended for two years and ordered to undertake the 60-day probation-run Maps for Change programme.
He was also ordered to sign on the sex offenders register for ten years and made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) by Judge Erik Salomonsen.
He told him: Some of the material depicted extreme cruelty and sexual offending against very young children. It was described by the prosecution as sexual torture.
The images are abhorrent even by the standards of some of the material which is dealt with in this court. The offence is aggravated by the age of the children, their pain and distress, the fact many are moving images, and the number of children involved.
These are not victimless crimes. Every time someone views these images it stimulates the demand among those who produce them to produce yet more of them.
The judge said he was suspending the sentence because he believed the public were better protected by McCollum receiving treatment than serving a short jail sentence.
Mr Nigel Wraith, prosecuting, said police acting on information about the use of peer to peer file sharing sites raided McCollums home in July last year and seized a laptop and other equipment.
They found a file marked porn on the computer and images and movies on four data discs. There were 171 movies and four stills in the most extreme category and 119 at lower levels.
He said: Some of the images are particularly extreme and depict scenes of what can only be described as sexual torture sometimes involving very young children indeed.
Mr Warren Robinson, defending, said McCollum is a lonely and isolated man who had been using adult pornography since his teens.
He was drawn into seeking images of children and more extreme material at a time when he was working in utilities and was very unhappy while living on his own in Taunton.
Since his arrest he has moved to a new address near his family in East Devon, sought counselling for depression and anxiety, and contacted the Lucy Faithfull Foundation for help to prevent him using pornography again.
He told the police on his arrest that he needed help, he has shown remorse, and the probation service have deemed him fit to take part in one-to-one work.
A probation report said McCollum had been drawn to more and more extreme material which gave him sexual gratification despite him being shocked and sickened by it.

Not Jewish, but flying an Israeli flag in Oshkosh – The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle
Posted: at 3:49 pm
OSHKOSH Ben Ganther isnt Jewish.
But no one would blame you for driving past his familys business Ganther Construction and assuming he is.
On the top of a flag pole on the sprawling grounds of the construction and architecture firm just below Old Glory itself waves an Israeli flag.
The flag is just one of several notable items adorning the grounds of the 117-year old business things that give you a window into the worldview of Ganther, the companys president.
Seated next to the flagpole is a gleaming statue of the Greek God Atlas an homage to Ayn Rands classic novel Atlas Shrugged.
Ben Ganther
Ganthers friend, Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, who lives in Oshkosh when he is not in Washington, D.C., paid for the base of the statue, which reads Fight to Be Free.
A few steps away, towards the entrance of the business, is a granite slab etched with the Prayer of St. Francis.
The Atlas Shrugged statue might give motorists a look into Ganthers political philosophy the prayer a window on his Catholic faith but the Israeli flag is meant to make the many Jews whoGanther says he knows fully aware that he stands with them and the state of Israel.
We have a lot of Jewish clients. I put the flag up to honor them and support Israel. I consider myself a Catholic Zionist, he said.
Ganther has Jewish business clients here in the U.S. but also in Israel. Hes been to the country 13 times.
The business website features an Israeli flag that acts as a digital toggle switch that can translate the site into Hebrew.
Ganther supports a single-state solution to the troubles in Israel and believes that the U.S. Embassy should be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The businessman also belongs to the Friends of the Israeli Defense Force, through which he has donated money to put an Israeli soldier through college, and to create a USO-type building for Israeli troops.
Hes taken his daughters on tours of the country and to study at the celebrated Batsheva Dance Company, and his best friend lives in Bat Yam.
A devout Catholic, Ganther credits his faith for fostering his affection for the Holy Land.
In Genesis, God is talking to Abraham, and says you are my people, and I am your God. (In that chapter) God himself is telling everyone they should be friendly to the Jewish people, Ganther said.
He also feels for his friends in Israel and the horrors they have witnessed, he said
There is an Israeli phrase about dancing at two weddings, (You cant dance at two weddings), but I wear a Friends of the IDF band on my wrist and in my pocket I keep a finger rosary, Ganther said. Israel needs all the friends it can get.

13-Year-Old Girl Sold for Sex Over a Dozen Times in Two-Day Period – MRCTV (blog)

Wheres the key, and how far can we throw it?
Suspects in a North Philadelphia neighborhood have been arrested after holding a 13-year-old girl against her will and prostituting her to over a dozen perverts over a two day period.
According to Fox 29 - Philadelphia:
According to police, Fantasia Gale and the others lured the teenager in with promises of a better life, but within hours she was being offered up to paying customers through an online advertisement.
Police say she was driven from house-to-house in two cars now at the police impound lot.
Since I cant stand people that do things like this, the following are the names of the sex traffickers, which is too polite a term for these wastes of oxygen:
You would think the one female in the group might have felt some remorse about pimping out a child, but Gale was the one who posted the online ad offering up the girls services.
Typically, the city of Philadelphia charges people in cases like this (over 100 since last July) with trafficking, conspiracy, rape and sexual assault.
I would say that these piles of excrement should get the book thrown at them, but even Atlas Shrugged isntbig enough to justify the punishment these people should face.
If you have any information regarding the fifth suspects (Romero) whereabouts, please contact the Philadelphia Police Department.

The Golden Rule – Think Humanism
Posted: at 3:47 pm
Humanists try to embrace the moral principle known as the Golden Rule, otherwise known as the ethic of reciprocity, which means we believe that people should aim to treat each other as they would like to be treated themselves with tolerance, consideration and compassion.
Humanists like the Golden Rule because of its universality, because it is derived from human feelings and experience and because it requires people to think about others and try to imagine how they might think and feel. It is a simple and clear default position for moral decision-making.
Sometimes people argue that the Golden Rule is imperfect because it makes the assumption that everyone has the same tastes and opinions and wants to be treated the same in every situation. But the Golden Rule is a general moral principle, not a hard and fast rule to be applied to every detail of life. Treating other people as we would wish to be treated ourselves does not mean making the assumption that others feel exactly as we do about everything. The treatment we all want is recognition that we are individuals, each with our own opinions and feelings and for these opinions and feelings to be afforded respect and consideration. The Golden Rule is not an injunction to impose ones will on someone else!
Trying to live according to the Golden Rule means trying to empathise with other people, including those who may be very different from us. Empathy is at the root of kindness, compassion, understanding and respect qualities that we all appreciate being shown, whoever we are, whatever we think and wherever we come from. And although it isnt possible to know what it really feels like to be a different person or live in different circumstances and have different life experiences, it isnt difficult for most of us to imagine what would cause us suffering and to try to avoid causing suffering to others. For this reason many people find the Golden Rules corollary do not treat people in a way you would not wish to be treated yourself more pragmatic.
The Golden_Rule cannot be claimed for any one philosophy or religion; indeed, the successful evolution of communities has depended on its use as a standard through which conflict can be resolved. Throughout the ages, many individual thinkers and spiritual traditions have promoted one or other version of it. Here are some examples of the different ways it has been expressed:
