AI Jobs: Companies To Spend $650 Million Hiring AI Talent … – Fortune
Posted: at 11:03 pm
Its going to take a lot of humans to create the kind of artificial intelligence that could replace truckers , financial analysts , and customer service representatives with robots. U.S. employers will spend more than $650 million on annual salaries for 10,000 jobs in AI this year, according to a study from career and hiring data firm Paysa .
The 2-year-old firm touts itself as the only platform to use AI to deliver personalized job and salary recommendations. It was founded by Chris Bolte, Zachary Poley, Nikhil Raj and Patrick Harrington all formerly of Walmart Labs and Walmart's engineering and product teams.
The firm uses millions of data points like job openings, resumes, and compensation to determine the market value of individual skills. Once a worker creates a profile on the site, they can look at how their salary compares to others with the same job title and experience.
Bolte, the CEO, said the platform also makes suggestions on which skills have the highest value for employers or can help them move into an adjacent field. For this study, Paysa looked at the market value of skills and education listed as requirements for each of these jobs and generated a projected salary.
Unsurprisingly, large companies account for 40% of open AI positions. The list includes tech stalwarts youd expect to see like Amazon , Google[/f500link [f500link]Microsoft, Huawei and IBM .
Paysa's report also found that 35% percent of the AI positions require a Ph.D and another 26% specify that candidates should have a masters degree.
As you get higher into up into these positions that require really specific skills like neural networks and deep learning, where a Ph.D. is required or preferred, thats when you start seeing schools having their top scientists and academics poached by private companies, said Paysa CEO and co-founder Chris Bolte.
But this isnt just news for hardcore academics, he said. Theres so much demand that one in five of the listings doesnt require a degree at all.
Though Amazon is far and away making the biggest bet on AI talent, there were some surprises too. For example, Paysas top 20 list included mapping and IoT firm Here . The firm, owned by a consortium of German automakers, will spend an estimated $8.5 million to cover the annual salaries for the 50 AI jobs its looking to fill according to the study.
Also among the 20 companies is Google , Alibaba, and Andreeson Horowitz-backed augmented reality wunderkind Magic Leap .
If the name sounds familiar, its because this time last year Wired named it the worlds hottest startup . And more recently, a report from The Information ( subscription required) revealed that it'll take longer than expected for the company to deliver on the technology it's been promoting. The report also mentioned that the Florida-based team has had trouble making its technology small enough to be wearable, putting it behind potential competitor Microsofts HoloLens .
But it seems Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz hasnt given up the ghost yet. The AI study counted 55 open AI-based job openings at Magic Leap, and estimates the average gig will pay over $135,000 per year.
Another notable top 20 company: BAE Systems, which develops combat vehicles, ammunition, artillery systems, naval guns and missile launchers. If it fills all 52 of its open AI positions, Paysa estimates BAE would be investing an extra $8.3 million in machine learning talent each year.
BAE recently showed off a prototype of an armed robotic combat vehicle, or ARCV, at the United States Armys Global Force Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama.
The ARCV is a tele-operated platform. It was designed to be operated remotely, either from another military vehicle or by a soldier on foot with a hand-held remote control.
He could either follow behind it like we drove it in here the other day, or he could be in a foxhole or under cover and operate the vehicle on the battlefield, James Miller, BAEs director of business development for combat vehicles, told National Defense Magazine.
For all the talk about automation replacing humans, recent examples have so far featured AI supplementing human capital.
Online grocery shopping startup Boxed , which offers customers wholesale sizes and prices without membership fees, just showed how an automation system can be good news for its replaced human counterparts. Boxed retrained and promoted some 100 workers that were recently made obsolete by robots in its Union, N.J. fulfillment center. Many of them even got raises.
"I will be the first to admit that it is not the smartest thing weve ever done when it comes to the balance sheet, but its what we do, CEO Chieh Huang told Fortune . Is it absolutely necessary to drive every last penny out of it at the cost of human livelihoods?

Rising global demand for natural and fresh fruit derivatives likely to boost market growth over the forecast period
A rising demand for Vitamin C and an increased customer focus on healthy, natural, and fruit-based products is expected to fuel the global acerola extract market over the forecast period. Increasing demand for convenience food & beverage products is also likely to boost market growth. Acerola extract is gaining high preference in the food & beverages industry owing to the fact that it contains high content of Vitamin C which is better absorbed by humans than synthetic ascorbic acid. Don’t Eat This If You’re Taking That – PR Newswire (press release)
Posted: at 11:01 pm
WASHINGTON, May 2, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Millions of Americans age 50-plus take prescription drugs, yet few know the health risks of taking them along with certain foods and over-the-counter (OTC) supplements. For instance, some blood thinners taken with everyday foods like spinach, kale, and tomatoes can increase the risk of irregular heartbeat and heart attack.
To address these kinds of food and drug interactions, AARP and Skyhorse Publishing have just released a jointly published revised edition of Don't Eat This If You're Taking That: The Hidden Risks of Mixing Food and Medicine (Skyhorse Publishing paperback; May 2, 2017, $17.99).
Written by Madelyn Fernstrom, Ph.D., and her husband John Fernstrom, Ph.D., Don't Eat This If You're Taking That provides a consumer's guide to understanding how mixing prescription medications with certain foods and supplements can lessen their effectiveness or even cause a serious health problem.
"Most people are surprised to learn that even healthy foods can interferewith the actions of many medicines," says Madelyn Fernstrom. "Small changes in what you eat can make a big difference in making sure your medications are working the way your doctor intended."
Some examples of expert advice from Fernstrom:
The revised and thoroughly redesigned edition focuses on which foods to take and which to avoid with the most common prescription drugs. Covering everything from antidepressants to herbal supplements, the book takes the mystery out of food and medication interactions.
The book is divided into eight sections covering the most widely-used medications:
"This book will help anybody tackle the complexities of food and medicine interaction," said Jodi Lipson, Director of AARP Books. "Don't Take This If You're Eating That is especially useful for people taking more than one medication."
Each chapter of the book features a Dietary Supplements Alert box providing up-to-date information on drug interactions with OTC vitamins and minerals.

Outrage of the Month: Dietary Supplements Purported to Boost Women’s Sex Drive Found to be Tainted With a … – Huffington Post
Posted: at 11:01 pm
Over the past decade, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a steady stream of public warnings about dietary supplements that have been spiked illegally with hidden drug ingredients or contaminated with other potentially dangerous substances. Among the pharmaceutical ingredients most frequently detected by the FDA in such products have been the active ingredients found in prescription drugs for treating erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis). These products typically are promoted as containing all-natural ingredients for male sexual enhancement.
Unsurprisingly, the FDA is starting to find illegal dietary supplements that contain flibanserin, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Addyi, which was approved by the FDA in August 2015 for treating premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. On April 18, the FDA announced that the agencys analysis had detected flibanserin in two products Zrect for Women and LabidaMAX and that the company making these products Organic Herbal Supply, located in Roseville, CA was voluntarily recalling them. The FDA noted that these supplements had been sold nationwide through Amazon.com and through Zrect.com starting on or around December 2014 through February 2017.
Similar to the way that supplements with hidden erectile dysfunction drugs have been promoted to men, these flibanserin-tainted supplements were being promoted for sexual enhancement in women. For example, one ad for Zrect for Women boasts that the product [i]ncreases a wom[a]n[]s libido and sexual desire.
Consumers unwittingly consuming flibanserin are exposed to a significant risk of serious harm. Importantly, the product labeling for the prescription drug Addyi carries a black-box warning the strongest type of warning required by the FDA stating that the drug can cause severe drops in blood pressure and fainting, which can result in serious, irreversible or even life-threatening injuries.
Women who combine alcohol with flibanserin, who take other drugs that can interfere with the bodys breakdown of flibanserin, or who have liver disease have the greatest risk of these adverse events. The product labeling for Addyi further cautions that patients taking flibanserin must never combine it with alcohol because the danger of doing so is too great. Moreover, physicians who prescribe, pharmacies that dispense and companies that distribute Addyi must comply with several special requirements imposed by the FDA when it approved the drug.
On June 4, 2015, Dr. Sidney Wolfe, founder and senior adviser of Public Citizens Health Research Group, testified before two FDA advisory committees to urge the agency to reject flibanserin, as it had in 2010 and 2013. He argued that the life-threatening dangers of the drug far exceeded its minimal benefit: Clinical trials had shown that patients using flibanserin had an average of only one half to one additional sexually satisfying experience per month compared with patients taking a placebo (see FDA review here).
Zrect for Women and LabidaMAX undoubtedly are just the first of many illegal flibanserin-spiked dietary supplements that will be promoted to boost womens sexual drive by unscrupulous companies around the world. And as history has shown with supplements promoted to boost mens sexual drive that contain erectile dysfunction drugs, the FDA will constantly be playing catch-up to remove these products from the market only after many unsuspecting consumers have been placed in harms way.
Consumers can best protect themselves by never using dietary supplements marketed for sexual enhancement. The average consumer is not able to distinguish those supplements that truly contain only natural ingredients from those tainted with active pharmaceutical ingredients. Moreover, there is no evidence that the former work, and the latter are simply too dangerous.

Protest art evolving in Trump era – DU Clarion
Posted: at 11:00 pm
With tumultuous political times come great art. Think of the 1960s and the art and music that came out as a response to the Civil Rights Movement, the sexual revolution and of course, the Vietnam War that became enshrined into American culture and our collective zeitgeist.
In todays tumultuous times where protests again fill the streets and there is a general unease in the social and political world, once again the industries of art and entertainment have responded with great works.
It started back in 2016, with the release of rapper YGs song, FDT (Fck Donald Trump). The song, which criticizes then-presidential candidate Donald Trumps policies, became a rally cry for the anthem searching young, left-rap-listening audience. Kendrick Lamars hit single Alright, off his 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly, also became somewhat of a protest anthem as it gained usage by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Post Trumps election, further music, especially on the hip-hop side of the spectrum, has continued to both explicitly target the presidents politics, as well as other social and political issues in the country that are relevant to the genres diverse, young audience. Back in November of 2016, the legendary, socially conscious hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest, released their final album: We Got it From HereThank You 4 Your Service. The album touches on todays relevant social issues, such as institutional racism, police brutality and gentrification. It also directly criticized the presidents policies with the protest hymn We the people In April of 2017, New York MC Joey Bada$$ released his second studio album ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$, which explored, at times overwhelmingly, themes of political angst.
Outside of hip-hop, other musicians such as Fiona Apple, with her song Tiny Hands, and Locker Room Talk by Cold War Kids specifically target the president, and in the Cold War Kidss case, his comments regarding women.
Beyond music, contemporary artists such as Rirkit Tirvavanija have specifically created work in response to the 2016 election. His collage piece, the tyranny of common sense has reached its final stage, was made using a collage of New York Times articles on the presidential campaign directly following the election. Street artist Shepard Fairey (creator of the famous Obama Hope campaign poster) and Ai Weiwei recently teamed up to launch a series of artwork (printed on limited edition skateboard decks) commemorating Trumps first 100 days in office.
Maybe the piece of recent protest art that has found a place the most in American hearts is the bronze statue Fearless Girl, by artist Kristen Visbal. The 50 inch statue depicts a small girl, chin up, in defiance to the Charging Bull Wall Street Statue. The statue has been granted a year long residence, but many hope for its permanent installation. The statue isnt a direct response to anyone or anything, but instead represents within it a defiance by those marginalized or oppressed in this country. Protest art is American art, as a country based in the ideals of free expression, its continued proliferation and creation is pure patriotism. It does not seem that the politically motivated/protest art movement is letting up soon, and the immediate future will be an interesting time for artistic expression.
