Venenum : Trance of Death – Treble
Posted: April 5, 2017 at 4:56 pm
For decades, extreme metal looked to Hell for inspiration. From Venoms Welcome to Hell to Slayers Seasons in the Abyss, as well as countless Satan-invoking black metal miscreants, the fiery underworld was the meeting point where heavy music came to party, slosh around in pigs blood, drink from bone chalices, crush a few beer cans and then go back to the surface to scare the normals. Its an appealing image for anti-authority types, and not mysteriously so; the Satanic Panicwasnt really that long ago, in the scheme of things, and megachurches somehow still manage to get asses in the seats. If individuality and free expression are more your thing than faith and self-denial, then why wouldnt you play up the devil thing? Whether or not anyone in a metal band ever believed in Satanwhich is unlikelythe rise you get out of someone who does is very real.
As metal has evolved, though, Hell itself has become less interesting as a source of inspiration. As a group like Oranssi Pazuzu proved with Vrhtelij, distant planetary colonies can be just as terrifying as a sea of fire. Germanys Venenum feels like a sort of spiritual kin to that unconventional Finnish group, their music seemingly born of something alien or supernatural rather than of orthodox villainy. In their press photos, they look a little bit like The Ramones in an abandoned subway tunnel, but the music on new album Trance of Death tells a different story. This is intense, cosmic and strange music that showcases the true potential of death metal when allowed to get weird.
Theres an undeniable gothic sensibility to what Venenum does, but not in the same way that Mercyful Fate or Swedish contemporaries Tribulation would display. Entrance, the leadoff track from Trance of Death, is a mournful and haunting instrumental played on cello and piano that wouldnt be out of place on an Agalloch album. The band maintains that darkness throughout, but they do so in the service of some furiously righteous death metal born of a twisted and unfamiliar realm. The title of Merging Nebular Drapes offers the possibility that alien blood really does run through their system, though its arguably the most straightforward death metal offering here, galloping forth with tight rhythmic dynamics and tremolo riffs. The Nature of the Ground takes things into a more complex direction, shifting tempos and introducing some dizzying, psychedelic guitar leads into the mix. And Cold Threat shakes up the approach even more, slowing to a crawl before launching back into a blast-beat explosion and eventually a section of crunchy grooves and acid-laced guitar leads that send the listener through a portal to a thrilling, terrifying terrain.
More than half of Trance of Death is composed of its three-part title suite, which finds the band at their most ambitious. In the first piece of the triptych, Reflections, the band balances spookiness with accessibility, its melody one of the strongest on the album despite an overall sense of foreboding. The middle section, Metanoia Journey, is instrumental occult rock with a heavy emphasis on 60s and 70s psych, its construction as much an emphasis of impeccable style as it is a showcase for the bands songwriting when removed from the context of death metal aggression. It seems only fitting that the third and final part is titled There Are Other Worlds. Its a long track and one that offers no shortage of compelling elements. Even more so than on the tracks leading up to itall of which are phenomenalThere Are Other Worlds finds Venenum taking the listener on a journey from one end of their sonic spectrum to the next, alternately beautiful and menacing. There are other worlds, indeed, and on Trance of Death, Venenum suggests theres still so much more for metal to explore.

Coldplay leaves Manila in a trance – Manila Bulletin

British rock band Coldplay literally left Manila with A Head Full of Dreams (AHFOD).
Thanks to Globe and MMI Live, Filipinos wait for the bands long overdue visit has ended, Tuesday night, April 4.

Coldplay opened the #AHFODTour with the albums first single of the same title, followed by the hit song Yellow, instantly sending the crowd to a frenzy.
After which, Coldplays frontman Chris Martin greeted the fans, Magandang gabi sa inyo.
Martin, who arrived in the Philippines ahead of Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion, had made some casual visits around the metro, surprising some of his lucky fans.

The singer also met with MMI Live CEO Rhiza Pascua, who joined him in visiting cancer patient Ken Santiago.
According to his brother, Ken was among the fans who braved long lines to avail a ticket for the concert. He, however, was diagnosed with cancer just last February, rendering him unable to watch the show.
Later in the concert, Coldplay dedicated their song Ink for Ken.

The band also performed fan favorites The Scientist, Viva La Vida, and Fix You, as well as AHFOD hits Everglow, Hymn for the Weekend, Birds, and Adventure of a Lifetime.
Further, as part of the bands usual concert acts, Chris composed an impromptu song for the Philippines, in which he described the amazing Filipino crowd.
Ill tell you that the crowd is a thriller, just listen to how they sound in Manila, Martin sang, which right away received an uproar from the audience.
Tagged as the concert of the year, the band not only gathered over 35,000 fans, music enthusiasts and even celebs, #Coldplay also set the standard for other artists next to invade the Manila concert scene.
For their final songs, the band made the audience dance to their newest single Something Just Like This, followed by A Sky Full of Stars, and closed with Up & Up.
The crowd, after the lights went out, screamed We want more! in unison; but, was not granted an encore. Despite, fans can expect Coldplay will come back because Chris Martin promised it himself.

Cyberpunk thriller Ruiner is here to smash you in the face – VG247
Posted: at 4:56 pm

Devolvers latest will take you down hard.
Ruiner really nails the cyberpunk aesthetic, the cold inhumanity of technology, stylised oppression and brutal violence.
So I said to the dude at Devolver show me your most violent games and he did exactly that. I sat down and smashed heads in with a steel pipe.
In Ruiner, your job is to kill the boss of Heaven. Heaven seems to be a steel-cold, clinical, neon industrial escape from the trash city of Rengkok below. And really theres only one thing to do here: kill.
So I turn heads into lunch meat. And then I graduate to increasingly devastating firepower, although crucially the pipe remains shockingly effective long after the bullets have ran dry.
Ruiners hero is faceless, concealed inside a helmet that flashes single bite-size mission statements. Someones giving him orders but theres someone else trying to hack into his perception, to subvert commands. While you keep killing the cyberpunk story begins to unroll; a missing brother, manipulation by The Man, a mysterious girl. But really during the early stages of the game the point is to just keep killing. I like a game that gets on with things.
The violence is chained together as you combo deceptively simple moves. Although the first level feels big, its really just about moving from one area to another, pausing to kill before moving on again. Confrontations consist of linking a dash, shield and brutal attack as pre-emptive strikes or risk being overwhelmed. The shield and dash use energy, so the combos cant be infinite. But chain them together quickly and you can devastate multiple enemies before theyve fired off a shot. Then you try to avoid more goons as you pick the rest off. Rinse and repeat.
Confrontation is quick and almost clinically effective in its violence, triggering an adrenaline rush of relief and revulsion.
Its tough to begin with, but once you make the shift from single actions to timing combos together youre an effective killing machine. You zip across the screen leaving clouds of blood drifting in the air. Confrontation is quick and almost clinically effective in its violence, triggering an adrenaline rush of relief and revulsion. I took them all down, they didnt get back up again, and Im a heartbeat away from collapsing. Overwhelming odds are shattered if you keep moving and make every action count.
There are comparisons to Hotline Miami, but only in the swift violence. Hotline is more tactical, giving you options when it comes to tackling enemies and approaching rooms differently. In Ruiner in the first large level Ive played, at least theres only ever one way to go, and the goons approach you, boxing you in. Youll have to beat them down before moving on.
The first level ends with a mini-boss fight but with added pressure. A timer counts down to zero and death. The only way to keep alive is to execute enemies, adding vital seconds back to the clock. So you need to balance time as you whittle down the boss but also quickly crush his goons to keep the clock in a safe zone. Dont get carried away pummeling the villain or youll aide your own death.
With the opening level finished, bathed in blood, youre introduced to Rengkok, a kind of hub where you can interact with a bunch of darkly comic citizens. Its like a snapshot of Mega City One or Geof Darrows Hard Boiled, used as a way of pushing you to the next level. If thats all it does then its a welcome break from the ultraviolence, but maybe itll offer more as the game opens up.
Ruiner really nails the cyberpunk aesthetic; the cold inhumanity of technology, stylised oppression and brutal violence all set to a heavy electro soundtrack. The action is quick and unforgiving and you can kill or be killed in a heartbeat. Every weapon picked up is bittersweet it will tear apart but only for a limited time so you need to tactically drop back and calculate your next victim before the last body even hits the floor. Its encourages you to play with confidence, ruthless efficiency and to not hesitate. Because to hesitate is to die.
Ruiner is out for PC this spring.

Witcher Series Passes 25M Units Sold, Cyberpunk 2077 Development "Quite Advanced" – GameSpot

CD Projekt Red's Witcher series has passed a new sales milestone. As part of the company's newest earnings report today, it announced that the franchise--comprising The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt--has now passed 25 million units sold (via PC Gamer).
The Polish developer did not provide a specific unit sales breakdown by title. Whatever the case, this figure is up from the 20 million number that CD Projekt Red disclosed a year ago this month.
During a Q&A session as part of the briefing, CD Projekt Red management offered an update on Cyberpunk 2077, saying development progress is "quite advanced" at this stage. Management said the game is very ambitious and stressed that the developer will not rush the game to market.
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to launch sometime in the 2017-2021 window. Don't expect to see more of it until CD Projekt Red can prepare an impressive showcase for it.
"Right now it's the end of talking about Cyberpunk until we can go out there and show stuff and say, 'Hey, here it is,' because that's how we do games," CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski said earlier. "There is too much talking about what it possibly could be, and how big, and...
"When we show it, we should show it and explain it. So I'm going to have people not read anything about Cyberpunk probably for the next... time, whatever the time will be."
The game is set in a dystopian future and is being made in partnership with Cyberpunk RPG designer Mike Pondsmith. Platforms have not been announced, but PS4, Xbox One, and PC seem likely.
In terms of financial specifics, CD Projekt Red's revenue and profit for 2016 dropped year-over-year. You can watch the CD Projekt Red earnings briefing above (it's translated from Polish to English), while you can read the full written report here.

Here’s Why Cyberpunk 2077 Could Feature Gore And Nudity – One Angry Gamer (blog)
Posted: at 4:56 pm
(Last Updated On: April 3, 2017)
A lot of people are interested in CD Projekt Reds upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 and want to know more about the gameplay aspects. And speaking of gameplay, what will the game have players doing and how will it let folks go about completing objectives? Well, given that many gamers are combing over every morsel and bit of detail surrounding the game, another piece of info thats not official yet regarding the games rating recently caught the eye of gamers offering a glimpse into what the game could sport.
Upon doing some more research on Cyberpunk 2077, Ive recently stumbled across a new thread talking about the title and how one particular user is concerned about the game. Upon reading the discussion it lead me to the bottom of the post where theres an ESRB listing for all of CD Projekt Reds titles: the ESRB rating at the bottom of the screen carries an M for Mature label, listing off each of the things contained within CD Projekt Reds games.
As of now, we might have an understanding as to what the game may contain when it does come around to fruition.
Although other rating sites like the ESRB do not list the game with its rating just yet, youll notice that on the official website the Mature label is listed for all of CD Projekts games. The first image comes from cdprojektred.com/forum (very bottom of the site) and details the following content.
Yes, on the official website the label lists all of the content that theyve notified the ESRB about for each of their games, this contains: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs.
Looking over to official Witcher store page (at the bottom of the site), youll see the ESRB rating where it rattles off what the game is rated for.
The image clearly reveals: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Alcohol.
The difference between the two is that the former label sports Use of Drugs, while the latter contains Use of Alcohol. This is because in The Witcher 2s ESRB rating does contain Use of Drugs, but its interesting that its not featured on the official shop page for The Witcher . So clearly theyre compacting all of their ESRB labels into one label and have it slapped on their official website at the bottom.
Whats interesting, however, is that the only other websites showing Cyberpunk 2077s rating is a summary over on IGN and MetaCritic that both still show RP. Again, its interesting that Cyberbunk 2077s official site used to show RP, but now it just has the Mature label that seems to represent all of CD Projekt Reds games. It would seem like they would have both a Mature label and a Rating Pending label to represent The Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077, since the latter game hasnt been rated yet.
Its almost as if they already expect the game to get an M rating for all of the things listed at the bottom of the site, so they just have the label there as a placeholder, or it could be that theyre expecting ample amounts of gore, nudity, strong sexual content, language and violence, and are giving people a heads-up before the game actually gets rated. Theres also a pretty high expectancy from those on the CDPR forums that the game will get the M for Mature rating based on the aforementioned adult subject matter.
Itll be interesting to see if the above is all true and how the game will be on release seeing that CD Projekt Reds visual effects artist, Jose Teixeira, revealed that
Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before. Far, far bigger. Were really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.
Cyberpunk 2077 is said to come out when its ready.

Passion Pit Uses Facebook Live to Show TMS for Bipolar Disorder … – The Mighty
Posted: at 4:54 pm
On Tuesday, Passion PitsMichael Angelakos went live on Facebook to share his experience getting a lesser-known noninvasive mental health procedure, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS),as a way of treating bipolar disorder.
The whole point is like, everyone says, Oh, I dont want to show people what I do, I dont want to talk about therapy. If we dont talk about it, its quite literally why no one understands what were talking about, Angelakos said in his video. So, I dont have anything to hide. I think this is an amazing treatment.
TMS is currently considered an off-label treatment for bipolar disorder. The procedure, which uses magnetic fields to simulate nerve cells, is approved for treating major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression. Because TMS is not yet approved for bipolar disorder, and therefore not covered by insurance, it can be expensive,Angelakos, who said he used toget electroconvulsive therapy, explained.
The video, titledThis is what getting help looks like, is almost an hour long, and features Angelakos and his doctor, Bobby, answering questions and providing information about TMS. All of this takes place while Angelakos undergoes treatment.
Im manic right now, Ive not slept in three days, Angelakos shared. Im tired, but not at all. I talk a lot. Ideas are kind of just going, going, going, going, and I need to calm down. Sometimes I take lithium, I would prefer to do this. This helps calm me down.
This is not the first time Angelakos has opened up about living with bipolar disorder. In 2012, he told Pitchfork he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was 18.
Angelakos also used the video to talk about mental health stigma and answer questions from fans about his experience living withbipolar disorder. Since posting the video, many have thanked the artist for sharing his story and shedding light on a less common treatment option.
Thanks for being open about this. Its super helpful to have famous musicians show that mental disorders are common and manageable and bring that message to the rest of the population, one commenter wrote.
Its so amazing to hear someone else verbalize and express what I feel on a daily basis. It really means a lot, because it feels like Im not going through this alone, another shared.
Update:It appears the live video has been taken down, and Angelakos posted the followingupdate.
You can watchAngelakos full video below.

Missing CF man found in Brule River – Iron County Reporter
Posted: at 4:53 pm
FLORENCE, Wis.The body of a missing 60-year-old Crystal Falls man was recovered from the Brule River in Florence Township by authorities on March 29, the Florence County Sheriffs Office said in a news release. Jerry Hamilton had been reported missing since March 27 after his vehicle had been found near a boat landing in Florence County. A preliminary autopsy showed that Hamilton died of drowning. Nothing was discovered during the autopsy that would indicate foul play. The investigation is continuing pending the results of toxicology reports. Deputies from the Florence County Sheriffs Office and wardens from the Wisconsin and Michigan Departments of Natural Resources recovered Hamiltons body at 4:43 p.m. The body was located by a remotely operated vehicle that was deployed by wardens from the Wisconsin DNR. Hamiltons body was located in 5 feet of water, approximately 10 feet from where his vehicle was found. Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene by Florence County Coroner Mary Johnson. The Florence County Sheriffs Office received a call from a citizen March 27 reporting a car on the ice on the Brule River, approximately 400 yards upstream from the boat landing. When deputies arrived on the scene, they discovered the front half of the vehicle was on the ice and the back half was in open water. Authorities said it appeared that Hamilton may have tried to turn his vehicle around when the back tires fell off the ice into open water. Hamilton was last seen by a family member on March 26 at approximately 8 p.m., according to the Florence County Sheriffs Office. The Florence County Sheriffs Office was assisted by the Wisconsin DNR, Michigan DNR and Florence Fire Department. The Michigan DNR also provided a fixed wing plane to fly the Brule River.

CF Ireland call for decision on life-saving drug – Galway Independent
Posted: at 4:53 pm
Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is again appealing to the government to approve ground-breaking therapies for people with the disease.
The plea comes ahead of Cystic Fibrosis National Awareness Week, which runs from 10-16 April.
The HSE has yet to confirm whether it will make Orkambi available - a life-changing drug that could significantly improve CF patients quality of life.
Chairperson of CF Galway, Mary Lane Heneghan is calling on the government to conclude its discussions with the drug manufacturer, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and to give swift approval for the Orkambi therapy.
The drug is estimated to cost 159,000 per patient.
She said it is hard for CF patients and their families to listen to the issue being played out in the public eye.
Its not fair on the families and the people with CF out there that all of this is played out on the airwaves. I know it has to be, but its just very difficult for the parents and for the adults in particular.
Ms Lane Heneghan is hopeful the HSE will come to a decision by the end of this week.
The latest figures from the Cystic Fibrosis Registry of Ireland show that in 2015 there were 1,219 people registered with CF, with 19 years the median age.
65 Roses Day
65 Roses Day so-named after the way in which young children are first taught to say the words Cystic Fibrosis will see the country awash with purple next Thursday, 13 April as volunteers take to the streets and shopping centres selling purple roses with the aim of raising 100,000. Monies will go to fund the development of dedicated healthcare facilities, research, counselling and much-needed grant supports for people with CF in areas such as transplant assessment, fertility and bereavement.
Galway Events
It will be all guns blazing in Galway next week, according to Ms Lane Heneghan, with a number of events scheduled to take place in aid of CF.
TY students at St Brigids Vocational College Loughrea along with their TY Co-ordinator Ms Flanagan are organising an awareness and fundraising event on 13 April. There will also be a poker game in St Michael's Community Hall Craughwell on Friday 14, as well as a quiz in Dan's Bar Athenry organised by Ronan Cahill who is cycling Malin2Mizen for CF in May and an event in Mayfly Inn Oughterard plus a memorial walk to Mameam.
Eyre Square Shopping Centre, Bank of Ireland Oranmore and Londis Kilcolgan will also be selling 65 Roses.
Ms Lane Heneghan said they are totally dependent on the generosity of local people and she thanked those for continuing to support the organisation.
You can lend your support by buying a purple rose for 2, making a 2 text donation by texting 65ROSES to 50300 or donating online atwww.65rosesday.ie
