AI, automation among technologies shrinking salaries nationally – Information Management

Posted: April 12, 2017 at 8:35 am

(Bloomberg) -- The advance of technology is the biggest reason workers are earning a shrinking slice of the income pie, according to a new study by the International Monetary Fund.

Labors share of national income declined in 29 of the worlds 50 biggest economies between 1991 and 2014, the IMF said in a study released Monday.

Analysis suggests technology is the largest contributor to the change in labor shares in the large majority of countries, it said. Several other studies and recent reports suggests that technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and machine learning are all contributing to that outlook.

The second main component of income is capital. When wages grow more slowly than productivity, labors share of income falls as the owners of capital reap gains at a quicker pace. That often worsens income inequality because capital tends to be concentrated in the hands of a few, the IMF said in a blog accompanying the research.

The IMFs finding is significant because economists have been debating whats to blame for decades of sluggish wage growth. President Donald Trump has blamed trade with countries such as China and Mexico for hurting American workers and hollowing out the nations manufacturing sector. The IMF study suggests technology is a bigger driver. Some recent studies suggest that automation will decimate the labor force in certain industries over the next 20 to 30 years, which will put an enormous drain on wages for existing workers.

About half the decline in national labor shares can be traced to the impact of technology, according to the study, which is part of the World Economic Outlook. The full outlook, including the funds forecasts for global growth, will be released April 18 in Washington.

Workplace Robots

The study notes the rapid advance of information and communications technology has accelerated the automation of routine tasks, causing firms to substitute capital for workers.

Global economic integration has also played a part in labors declining share of income, the IMF said. The impact of changes in policies and institutions appears to be limited, though its difficult to say how much of the slump has to do with the decline of labor unions, according to the fund.

The IMF has warned before of the threat from from the growing use of robots. A paper by fund economists in September drew on science fiction as well as economic analysis to show the likely profound negative implications for income distribution of increased automation. It even depicted an extreme scenario, or singularity, in which capital takes over the entire economy to the exclusion of labor.

Automation acquisitions ‘capture the future of streamline production’ – BioPharma-Reporter.com

Posted: at 8:35 am

There is a growing trend among vendors to integrate automation technologies into their offerings says a bioprocessing expert, as GE Healthcare invests in its partner Zenith.

This week, bioprocessing equipment and services supplier GE Healthcare announced it has made a meaningful minority stake in its automation collaborative partner Zenith Technologies and has taken a seat on its board.

The deal is the latest in a string of investments by vendors in third-party automation software, controls and technology partners.

Last week Sartorius AG acquired its long-term process analytical technology (PAT) and quality by design (QbD) software partner MKS Instruments AB for $72.5m (68m). And in February Thermo Fisher bought Finesse Solutions, a developer of scalable control automation systems and software for bioproduction and a partner the firm has been working with since 2013.

While such deals could be considered competitive expansions in the highly consolidated bioprocessing sector, Eric Langer managing partner at independent strategic biomanufacturing information and analysis firm BioPlan Associates told us investments in automation and PAT technologies make logical business sense.

The more these guys integrate their software into hardware solutions, the more locked in they can become. Further, as the industry continues focusing on manufacturing productivity and efficiency, the more they need to rely on automation, integrated equipment, controllers, software, etc.

So its also probably a strategic move to capture the future ability to streamline production.

He added automation integration also has benefits from a regulatory perspective, as the more automation, the less human interaction and the fewer failures.

His views were echoed by Jan Makela, general manager of Bioprocess at GE Healthcare Life Sciences:

GE decided to invest in Zenith Technologies, as automation is becoming increasingly important for our customers, biopharmaceutical manufacturers who are looking for increased efficiency, productivity and increased product quality, he told Biopharma-Reporter.com.

Automation brings significant benefits to their production processes, and the role of automation is likely to only accelerate in the near future as new opportunities emerge with digitalisation.

Tesla’s "Advanced Automation" Division Gears Up for Model 3 Production – The Drive

Posted: at 8:35 am

Last year, Tesla announced plans to acquire German engineering firm Grohmann Engineering and reconstitute it as "Tesla Advanced Automation Germany." Now, the carmaker is using all of its new possession's resources to gear up for Model 3 production, reports say.

As an independent company, Grohmann had a client list that included other automakers. But it recently announced that it would drop all other clients and focus solely on Tesla, according to Electrek. Tesla is focusing on improving its manufacturing process as it works to launch the Model 3, and the creation of Tesla Advanced Automation Germany is understood to be a part of that project.

A streamlined manufacturing process is key to meeting Tesla's ambitious goals for the Model 3. CEO Elon Musk wants the company to be building 500,000 cars a year next year, the more affordable Model 3 will make up the majority of that total. Tesla also has hundreds of thousands of reservations for the car. But the company has also missed every one of its deadlines for new-car launches so far.

Musk previously said the new outfit would honor contracts already entered into by Grohmann Engineering. But a recent report from German-language news outlet Sdwestrundfunk indicated that the group was in the process of ending all relationships with outside clients, including canceling existing orders.

The shift comes amid some instability within the group itself. At a recent Grohmann Engineering employee meeting, Tesla CTO JB Straubel announced that founder Klaus Grohmann was retiring. About half of the roughly 680 employees are also reportedly attempting to unionize. This comes as Tesla deals with a unionization push at its Fremont, California, assembly plant.

It's unclear what role Tesla Advanced Automation Germany will have in the initial rollout of the Model 3. Tesla may be planning to use some of Grohmann Engineering's automation expertise right off the bat, but the group's European location hints that it may be more geared toward an eventual expansion of car production outside the U.S.

Govt striving hard for healthy Pakistan: minister

Islamabad

Computerisation and automation of Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) would be beneficial to all the stakeholders across the board.

Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, said this while presiding over a consultative session with the representatives of media bodies and officials of federal and provincial information departments on automation system of ABC here on Monday. The regional and local newspapers would also reap benefits of modern technology and new management information system, she said.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that automation was primarily aimed at ensuring credible and authentic newspapers circulation data, as once the online system was in place it would not only prove benevolent for the media industry, but would also enhance transparency and good governance.

The minister of state directed the authorities concerned to share management information system with the stakeholders for the test launch and it was decided that feedback by them would be given due consideration at the formal launch of the automation system.

It was also decided in the meeting that the stakeholders would come up with their feedback latest by May 10, 2017 and the next consultative session would be held on May 15, 2017.

The media bodies appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage in streamlining and facilitating the existing process of Audit Bureau of Circulation and apprised the meeting that they would be holding consultations amongst their representative bodies and others having a stake in the proposed initiative, before giving final feedback on the subject.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Information, Principal Information Officer, ABC Director General, senior officials of provincial information departments, and representatives of All Pakistan Newspapers Society and Council for Pakistan Newspapers Editors.

Later on while talking to Assistant Secretary General and Coordinator for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Gerda Verburg here on Monday Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the Government of Pakistan was striving hard for a healthy Pakistan, through addressing the problem of malnutrition, which it considered a sine quo non for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The setting up of a task force and special cell in the National Assembly and similar entities in the provinces and departments concerned amply demonstrated the commitment with which the government was pursuing that objective, she added.

The minister felt that proactive collaboration and coordination between SDGs and SUN Secretariat was critical for realisation of Pakistan's vision 2025 and said that Pakistan was keen to adopt best practices and learn from the expertise of other countries to achieve the goal of a healthy Pakistan.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that nutrition was the key to achieving Sustainable Development Goals and acknowledged that it was a multi-faceted issue, which was prevalent among infants, children, mothers and adolescents. She said that the executive was working with dedication and diligence to advance the agenda of Sustainable Development Goals under the parliamentary oversight and was making all possible efforts to create a congenial and enabling environment to ensure people's access to healthy nutrients, safe drinking water and adequate sanitation so that the children were not exposed to various infections and diarrhoea.

The minister informed Ms Gerda that Pakistan was the first country, which had established its first secretariat of Sustainable Development Goals where thematic sessions were conducted to provide data and information to representatives of the people, so that they could be able to address the issues in their respective constituencies.

Gerda Verburg appreciated the contribution of the Minister of State towards the efforts for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and hoped that Pakistan would not only persist with those efforts but would also take further practical steps to deal with the problem of malnutrition, simultaneously taking care of the issue of stunting growth.

8 Signs You’re a Slave Instead of an Employee

Posted: at 8:34 am

Literal slavery is a horrible practice that still persists into the modern age. But, I want to talk about another form of human exploitationemployment slavery, which can also ruin a persons life. Generally, I consider this a self-inflicted slavery because its ultimately a persons choice to work under such conditionsbut I also understand that brainwashing can occur, creating the illusion that theres no way out.

Slavery (in general) exists because of the inclination among people to obtain the benefits of human resources, while providing little (or nothing) in return. Human work is the most intelligent, efficient way to create a system of wealth and power. For the morally bankrupt, such benefits are sought for free.

Employment, in the best case scenario, is a business deal of mutual benefit. But in other instances, the company is expending such minimal resources that they are taking advantage of you. In the worst case scenario, through a combination of slave-driving principles and psychological techniques to break you down, such a job can morph into something very similar to actual slavery.

If you dont know any better, its easy to fall into slavery conditions. Here are signs that your sense of freedom in life is totally gone:

Because of the way employers conveniently ignore yearly inflation, todays minimal wage is not enough to maintain any semblance of a normal lifestyle. Minimal wage makes some sense in small businesses just starting out. But, In America, $8.25 an hour, or less, from a large, billion-dollar corporation is inexcusable. In this case, your annual wages cost a second of the companys hourly profits. In other words, your hard work is a very bad deal for you, and a killer opportunity for the suits upstairs.

Youre lucky you even have a job! is a psychological taunt that bad employers use to try and keep their wage-slaves from believing they can do any better. Such statements are made to maintain a sense of control. Understand, voluntary slavery is not a rare phenomenon. It happens when a person is brainwashed into the belief that they have nowhere else they can go.

If your manager uses psychological put-downs like this to denigrate your professional abilitiesunderstand that its being done for a reason.

The idea of getting a raise and a promotion may be dangled in-front of you, but youve seen no evidence to suggest that it really happens. In fact, only a very small percentage of your co-workers ever obtain this goal, and they tend to be the cronies of upper-management. If this is the case, then what exactly is your reason for working at this company?

Inconvenient hours are inevitable in jobs, but some companies will abuse the system. This ranges from illegally denying overtime pay, to scheduling month-long bouts of cloping (working until closing hours late at night, then opening hours the next morning) that leaves the employee physically and emotionally drained.

An employee in this system may feel the intense pressure by the bosses to conform to abusive hours, under the threat of being denied promotions or even getting fired for seeking better treatment.

Americas two-week annual vacation time is one of the weakest in the Western world, and American workers tend to not even use it. This is because many employers will hint that vacationers are likely to end up on the shit-list of not getting promoted. They may even hint that unruly vacation-seekers will be the first to get laid-off or fired at the earliest opportunity.

A system of slavery does not allow free-time for individuals to maintain their own lives outside of their work. This could cause dissent and break the system of total control. An unspoken methodology among abusive managers is to destroy the lifestyles of employees so, instead of tending to family or hobbies, they work at full capacity.

Feeling motivated based on high-standards and being scared to go below those standards is one thing, but being genuinely scared of the people youre working for is another.

Slave-masters maintain systems of fear, to break down their subjects and perhapsin timebuild them back up. For the best example of thisplease see Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.

Psychological and verbal abuse is usually what occurs. An abusive employer understands exactly what strings to pull to generate feelings of shame or guilt, and theyll use the professional context to destroy a subjects sense of self-worth, perhaps by implying worthlessness at the vocation theyve devoted their life to.

In other instances, the abuse is very overt and could include yelling, tantrums and even physical assaults. But the outcome is the same: the employee living in a constant state of paranoia, fear, and subservience.

Read carefully the ten warning-signs youre in a cult by the Cult Education Institute. Some of these that could be very applicable to a workplace include: absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability, no tolerance for questions or critical inquiry, the leader (boss) is always right, and former followers (employees) are vilified as evil for leaving.

If the job feels less about, you know, getting the job doneand is more about the influence, charisma and infallibility of the bossthen get the heck out of there. This means the person in charge is getting a side-benefit to running or managing the workplace: power and dominance.

The number one sign youre a slave and not an employee is that youre working an unpaid internship, and its not for college credit. You may be promised great benefits and valuable connections, at what amounts to harsh workplace conditions, long hours, and zero pay.

A huge mistake I see young professionals make, and it really irks me, is naivety about peoples intentions. I went to film school for my bachelors, and many students I knew lusted after top internships at film studios or with big names in the entertainment industry. Such internships are often offered regardless of college credit.

When a person is blindsided by their desire to make it and get in with big names, they are likely to make bad decisionsand unscrupulous employers will prey on this desire.

Internships are great IF its part of a students actual curriculum. It means hands-on work and real experience versus useless classrooms. But, the questionable non-credit internships I warn about also exist to lure young people into systems of slavery. Its gotten so bad these types of arrangements are quickly becoming illegal in California.

The reality of such internships is that the slave-drivers only desire one thing: unpaid work. There is NO promise that you will move up or land any type of a paid job. When your internship finishes, they will discard you and find the next victim.

The biggest reason to avoid internships is the mentality behind the deal. Imagine a law firm or a film studio that is a multi-billion dollar operation. How hard would it be to throw their new recruit at LEAST minimum wage? The fact such a company would, despite their huge profits, still desire unpaid labor is indicative of a slave-driving mentality that funnels wealth to the top at the expense of the people on the bottom making it possible.

As a professional, it would be best for you to avoid doing any type of business with any individual or company that possesses a philosophy like this.

Employment-slavery situations are common. Very common. But ultimately, the biggest factor in determining how bad it is, is a single question: are you happy?

If you are happy at $8.25 an hour with no benefits, because you like the people you work with, you like the nature of the work, and you feel its moving you somewhere you want to bethen its not slavery. Youre making an investment thatll either pay off, or it wontbut at least you enjoy what youre doing.

However, if you are miserable in your current conditions, its quite possible that the uneasy feeling in your gut is your intuition telling you that someone is taking advantage of you.

Employment is supposed to be a business contract, and an exchange of services. Never a system of control. Sometimes, just the willingness to walk away is your strongest defense against a terrible job situation.

Bishop Declan Lang reiterates call for complete abolition of the death penalty – Catholic Herald Online

Posted: at 8:34 am

Bishop Declan Lang (Mazur/catholicchurch.org.uk)

The bishop said that every execution is a violation of the innate dignity of the human person

The Bishop of Clifton has reiterated his call for the Church to work for the complete abolition of the death penalty.

Bishop Declan Lang, who head the English and Welsh bishops department for international affairs said that while he welcomed the news that worldwide use of the death penalty had decreased, there was still much more progress to be made.

In a statement released today he said: More than 1,000 people were executed last year they are not just statistics. Every execution is a violation of the innate dignity of the human person and we must continue to heed Pope Francis call to work for complete global abolition.

I am encouraged by the UK governments continued opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances, as recently reiterated at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Now is a critical moment for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to actively prioritise its work in this area and help continue the trend towards a world without executions.

As the UK establishes new economic relationships outside the EU, it is also more important than ever that we use trade agreements as an opportunity to promote human rights, including abolition of this inhumane and indefensible punishment.

In an article for The Universe last year, Bishop Declan Lang said that during the Year of Mercy Catholics should commit themselves to seeking an end to executions everywhere.

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has also repeated his plea for a world free from capital punishment.

In a message to a world conference against the death penalty last year in Oslo, Pope Francis said capital punishment contradicts Gods plan for individuals and society, and his merciful justice and said that growing opposition to the practice is a sign of hope.

MPs call for sweeping changes to housing association regulation – The Guardian

Posted: at 8:34 am

The regulation of housing associations needs sweeping changes, MPs have told the Guardian, after an investigation into troubled new-build developments, which have benefited from more than 60m of public money.

The investigation into properties across London found issues with five housing associations: Catalyst, Sanctuary, Notting Hill Housing, Wandle and the One Housing Group, who together control 175,000 homes. Problems experienced by tenants and homeowners have included structural defects, damp, mould, broken lifts, infestation by rats, and widespread issues with poor customer service.

Rushanara Ali, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, called for a new system of transparency and official ratings. Why cant we have league tables for housing associations so we know who are the worst offenders? said Ali, who has led recent attempts in parliament to force the government to take action on oversights by housing associations. That would force them to act.

We cannot tolerate the poor practice were seeing now. We wouldnt tolerate it from private landlords, so theres absolutely no reason we should be tolerating it from publicly funded housing associations. Whats scandalous is that public money is being given to them, even when customer service is failing.

The Green party co-leader, Caroline Lucas, said the revelations highlighted the downsides of recent government policy. The appalling state of some housing association homes is the result of years of deregulation and profit-seeking being prioritised over the building of decent homes, she said. No one should have to live in these kind of conditions. Mould, flooding and rats might be relatively common in Londoners homes, but that doesnt make their presence in any way acceptable.

The shadow housing minister, John Healey who served as housing minister under Gordon Brown said the Guardians findings exposed huge issues about how social housing providers are changing. This investigation is a cautionary tale about some housing associations work, he said. When some of them are adopting a more commercial model, they need to take care not to adopt commercial building standards, which too often these days the public see as unsatisfactory.

The National Housing Federation, the umbrella organisation which speaks for housing associations, said residents in housing associations were overwhelmingly satisfied and that the examples uncovered by the Guardian were in no way representative of the general quality of these housing associations homes nor the sector as a whole.

But politicians and housing professionals have become increasingly concerned about some housing associations performance and the governments drive to cut back funding and regulation, much of which was put in place under the last Labour government.

The Audit Commission played a key role in monitoring housing associations performance, but was dissolved in 2015. In 2010, the then housing minister Grant Shapps announced the abolition of the Tenants Services Authority, which was responsible for inspecting housing associations and addressing residents concerns.

Now, although the government insists that a strong regulatory framework remains in place, further moves are afoot. The Conservative housing minister, Gavin Barwell, recently told the House Of Commons that the government was committed to deregulating the sector, and highlighted new moves that free housing associations from the need to seek official approval for organisational changes and selling off their stock. Barwells department said: Housing associations are regulated and need to maintain their houses to a decent standard Where necessary, wed expect local authorities to use their enforcement powers for dealing with any breaches [of regulations].

The Labour MP Jon Cruddas, whose consituency of Dagenham and Rainham will have tens of thousands of newbuild homes constructed over the next 15 years, said:.Whats happening to some housing associations mirrors what happened to the building societies. They chased the market, and demutualised, and became much more aggressive, at the expense of their civic inheritance. The worry with housing associations is similar: theyre getting bigger and bigger, and theyre becoming more marketised.

Calls are growing for a different system of regulation, which would boost the role of the housing ombudsman. Sixty-one people work for the housing ombudsman, said Ali. Thats not many. I would like the government to change the requirement for people to go to their MP before they make a complaint. That just delays things. And the ombudsman does not publish how many complaints have been submitted for housing associations. That needs to change.

Would the artists in Tate’s Queer British Art show have approved of being included? – Spectator.co.uk

Posted: at 8:34 am

There is only one thing worse than homosexual art, the painter Patrick Procktor was once heard to declare at a private view in the 1960s. And thats heterosexual art. It would have been intriguing to hear his views on Queer British Art at Tate Britain. All the more so since it includes several of his own works, including a fine line-drawing study of the playwright Joe Orton, completely naked except for his socks which he kept on because he felt they were sexy and reclining somewhat in the manner of Manets Olympia.

In fact, many of those included might have had reservations Oscar Wilde, for example, one of whose characters observed, The only artists I have ever known who are personally delightful are bad artists. There are quite a few of those included here. Then again, strictly speaking Queer British Art is not about art at all, but defined by law, and those who fell foul of it.

In other words, its concerned with a clandestine and persecuted group. Its para-meters are the abolition of the death penalty for sodomy in 1861 and the legalisation of sexual intercourse between consenting adults in 1967 (Oscars fate is grimly documented by a cell door from Reading Gaol).

The result, from the artistic point of view, is a lot of promiscuous mingling of the good, the indifferent and the simply awful (though sometimes, as in the case of Glyn Philpots paintings, also quite fun). Frankly dreadful items such as Walter Cranes enormous, pallid, silly Renaissance of Venus (1877) get in for the sake of a good story. Apparently, on first seeing this canvas Lord Leighton exclaimed, But my dear fellow, that is not Aphrodite that is Alessandro! He meant that the body was that of Alessandro di Marco, a successful male artists model.

The received explanation for this if the picture really was painted from life rather than being simply a blend of Botticelli and whimsy is that Cranes wife forbade him from using female models. The catalogue, however, prefers to interpret it as a case of gender fluidity, quoting with approval the comment of the painter W. Graham Robertson on Leightons remark: Still, she was a fine, upstanding slip of a boy.

Fluidity of gender is, naturally, a hot topic in queer studies an academic discipline as abstruse as particle physics, and discussed in equally impenetrable jargon. It is presumably because of complex equations worked out by trained queer scholars that pictures such as Cecile Waltons Romance (1920) a semi-nude self-portrait of the artist as a young mother with her two children are included. It comes in a section headed, rather broadly, Defying Convention.

There are moments, while walking around, when you begin to wonder whether there is any clear distinction between queer British art and British art, tout court. Indeed the non-British sculptor-painter Alberto Giacometti had the same thought, according to Lucian Freud. He told me he had decided to come and live in London, et je deviendrai un pdraste. Almost all my friends at that time were queer, and he had decided that that was the life!

Freud is not included in the exhibition, but many of his circle from the Forties and Fifties are John Craxton, John Minton, Francis Bacon. It is easy to imagine Bacons response to being seen in this company, aesthetically. He was a famously savage critic one friend gave up painting in despair after Bacons hilariously scathing reaction to his work.

He would probably have been equally entertaining if let loose on the audio guide to Queer British Art but perhaps unfairly so. There are some fine pictures here and there by the neglected Edward Burra, for example, and the almost forgotten Ethel Sands. The photographs, however, tend to catch the eye more than the paintings whether camp and fantastic, such as Cecil Beatons Stephen Tennant as Prince Charming (1927), or poignant like John Deakins frayed print of the two Roberts, Colquhoun and MacBryde, asleep (or passed out) in each others arms, c.1953.

Turning to the two stars of the show, there is much better Hockney on display in his triumphant retrospective and the Bacons are also far from his best. Its a shame that Tate couldnt get the latters Two Figures (1953) based on Muybridges photographs of naked wrestlers and informally known as The Buggers which is surely one of the truly great post-war British paintings. It hung for many years on Freuds bedroom wall. Francis, he recalled, liked to imagine that he was the one underneath.

Those more interested in visual delight than in social history albeit touching and amusing might like the new installation Forms in Space by Light (in Time) by Cerith Wyn Evans in the grand Duveen Galleries upstairs. It consists, in effect, of illuminated neon tubes that draw in the air above your head, producing an effect a little like a skein of vapour trails in the sky. Its free, fresh, energising and altogether lovely.
