Brain, the last frontier! – Huffington Post

It's been 15 years since the Human Genome Project gave us the key to our genes, and genetic applications have since skyrocketed. With breakthrough DNA editing tools on their way, the next big challenge in line for science is all about demystifying the potential of the human brain. But, why now?

Because for one, research in neuroscience is booming. Endeavors like the Human Brain Project are about half way completed. With an estimated cost of over $1 Billion and thousands of researchers from all over the world collaborating, we are on the cusp of some revolutionary ideas that will reshape so much of what we know about the brain. At the same time, were seeing remarkable progress made in the fields of advanced technology where computing power is transforming how we live our day to day lives. What these researchers and scientists want is to recreate a virtual brain where various new discoveries can be implemented, shared with the scientific community, and lead us to understand the way our brain works. So brace yourselves, neurotechnology is here to stay.

Most recently, Elon Musk, the guy whos tackling some of the biggest challenges of the century, developing new energy paradigm and technologies to turn us into a multi-planetary species, just stepped in the same arena. In the similar realm as Bryan Johnson's company, Kernel - Musk announced Neuralink, a startup registered as a medical company that is pursuing the creation of an implantable brain to machine interface. Musk calls it the neural lace. And its ultimate goal? Granting humans direct access to the digital world in order to keep up with progress and side effects of AI.

Now, make no mistake. Musk might well be able to bring his project to fruition. Things are moving fast. But as of now, there is no way to know how long it may take, or if we, as humans, will be ready to go as far as to voluntarily implant electrical devices in our brains. There's clearly a set of ethical, safety, and regulation sticky points here. From a technical standpoint, deep brain stimulation or other medical applications have been around for a long time. However, it was only a couple of days ago that a quadriplegic patient recovered enough mobility to feed. This was only possible thanks to 228 electrodes implanted in his brain and arm. And even if Mark Zuckerberg plans to pour millions in the production of minimally invasive neural interfaces to help those kind of patients, to see a direct to consumer implantable neurotechnology product might well take another 15 to 20 years.

At the same time, Elon Musk's launch of Neuralink is great news. Its a major step in how were pushing academic research out of the labs and putting it in the hands of the consumers. It also means added interest for the field of neurotechnology and how itll lead to greater awareness, funding, and research.

As Elon chases the invasive technology to tap into the human brain, we should also know that there are other ways to understand and enhance the functions of our brain. External active devices can bring a lot of benefits to our everyday life without the risky prospect of a device attached to the surface of your brain. And that's not in 10-15 years, it's happening right now, its already science.

I am certain that were very close to a future where power of the human brain will coexist with advanced technology. However, I hope that the change it brings will improve our performance and better our health. The journey will be long and arduous, but itll definitely be fulfilling.

Protalix BioTherapeutics, Inc. (NYSE: PLX) announced positive results from the Companys phase II clinical trial of alidornase alfa for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Sixteen patients were enrolled in the study, all of whom completed the study. alidornase alfa is a plant cell-expressed, chemically-modified recombinant DNase enzyme resistant to inhibition by actin, which the Company has specifically designed to enhance the enzymes efficacy in CF patients.

The phase II trial is a 28-day switchover study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of alidornase alfa in CF patients previously treated with Pulmozyme (currently the only commercially available DNase therapy). Participation in the trial was preceded by a two-week washout period from Pulmozyme before treatment with alidornase alfa via inhalation.

The primary efficacy results show that treatment with alidornase alfa resulted in clinically meaningful lung function improvement, as demonstrated by a mean absolute increase in the percent predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (ppFEV1) of 3.4 points from baseline. Moreover, a mean absolute increase in ppFEV1 of 2.8 points was also observed in patients participating in the trial when compared to measurements taken from patients at initiation before the switch from Pulmozyme to alidornase alfa.

A commercially available small molecule CFTR modulator for the treatment of CF has reported a mean absolute increase in ppFEV1 of 2.5 from baseline in its registration clinical study. This score was achieved while 74% of the patients participating in the trial of the CFTR modulator were also treated with the modulator on top of Pulmozyme. While this marketed CFTR addresses a certain mutation applicable to less than 50% of CF patients, alidornase alfa is being developed to treat all CF patients.

Sputa available DNA samples were analyzed for approximately half of the patients. A mean reduction of over 70% in DNA content from baseline was observed, and a mean reduction of over 90% from baseline was observed for sputa visco-elasticity. Correlation between improvement in sputa parameters and pulmonary function was observed.

In addition, an in vitro study of alidornase alfa demonstrated a significant inhibition of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, with alidornase alfa treated colonies reduced by over 50%, compared to baseline. Pseudomonas, strains of bacteria that are widely found in the environment, are a major cause of lung infections in CF patients. Chronic pulmonary infection is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in CF patients, despite the aggressive use of antibiotics, and Pseudomonas is the most prevalent organism in the airway colonization of CF patients.

PK analysis performed indicated alidornase alfa is not absorbed into a patients circulatory system, suggesting higher levels of alidornase alfa remains available in the patient's lungs. This provides further support for the potential that alidornase alfa may offer additional efficacy to CF patients.

The above-mentioned material decrease in visco-elasticity and DNA presence in CF patients sputa, coupled with the significant inhibition of Pseudomonas and higher levels of alidornase alfa available in the patients lungs, provides further supportive evidence of improved lung function after treatment with alidornase alfa, as demonstrated by the increase in FEV1.

alidornase alfa was well tolerated with no serious adverse events reported, and all adverse events that occurred during the study were mild and transient in nature.

The efficacy and safety results of alidornase alfa are very encouraging as they demonstrate data that are clinically relevant which brings new hope to CF patients living with this devastating disease, said Professor Eitan Kerem, Chairman of Pediatrics, Head of The Cystic Fibrosis Center, Hadassah University Hospital, and a Principal Investigator in the clinical trial. I look forward to taking part in future clinical studies of alidornase alfa as I believe it has the potential to become a gold standard treatment for all CF patients.

We are very excited with the clinical data showing a significant, clinically meaningful improvement in efficacy, and potentially offering new alternatives to all CF patients, commented Moshe Manor, Protalixs President and Chief Executive Officer. Protalix Bio’s AIR DNase shows positive effect in mid-stage CF study; shares ahead 8% premarket – Seeking Alpha

Micro cap Protalix BioTherapeutics (NYSEMKT:PLX) is up8%premarket on robust volume in response to its announcement of positive results from a 16-subject Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating AIR DNase (alidornase alfa) in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients previously treated with Roche's (OTCQX:RHHBY) Pulmozyme (dornase alfa).

Preliminary data showed patients treated with alidornase alfa experienced a clinically meaningful improvement in lung function as measured by the percent increase in percent predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (ppFEV1) of 3.4 points from baseline. Participants also showed a mean absolute increase of 2.8 points in ppFEV1 compared to the measurements taken when patients switched from Pulmozyme to alidornase alfa.

A correlation between sputa parameters and pulmonary function was observed. The sputa DNA content in ~half the patients was analyzed which showed an average reduction of over 70% from baseline. There was more than a 90% reduction from baseline in sputa visco-elasticity.

An in vitro study showed alidornase alfa significantly inhibited the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major cause of lung infection in CF sufferers.

More complete data will be presented at the 40th European Cystic Fibrosis Conference in June.

According to the company,AIR DNaseis a proprietary plant cell-expressed recombinant form of a human enzyme called deoxyribonuclease 1 (DNase 1) that cleaves extracellular DNA and thins the thick mucus that accumulates in the lungs of CF sufferers. It is designed to be more effective than Roche'sPulmozymeby being more resistant to actin inhibition, which restricts DNase I activity.Actinis a protein that plays a role in a wide range of cellular processes.

The technicals for CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (CF) has spoken via its technical chart and the message is loud and clear. Based on that message, this is the relevant information necessary to make sense of that current setup. Technical charts and data play a much bigger role in the success of traders than most would believe. Theres simply no better way to get the full message being sent by a stock than through reading its technical chart accurately. Its a principle worth keeping in mind as a trader looks to profit from a stock.

(CF) is now solidly presented where a clearly defined trend is concerned. This is evident based on information displayed via its 50 and 200 SMAs. The trend levels paint a telling picture which when analyzed, is best characterized as bullish. As a result of the current trends presented by both SMAs, traders have offered a defined and strong outlook for the stock. The overall sentiment or disposition towards the stock can best be described as positive. The discernable sentiment towards the stock has created a resulting influx of opinion that is now created a volume situation clearly titling towards a weak disposition as the situational flux between buyers and sellers take a definitive shape. The overall sentiment of the stock certainly looks more shapely than it did before the foregoing technical indicators started to converge. The trend seems like a likely candidate for becoming something bigger.; Since these sentiments have taken shape, a marked level of indifference has materialized when all statistical factors are considered regarding the stocks profile among traders. Overall viability is therefore, based on the foregoing readings, highlighting the disposition of traders towards the stock. This disposition should retain consistency with the overall technical picture cast by the two important technical indicators mentioned above.

Relative strength indicator (RSI) and Stochastic measures offer another dimension to the whole methodology of analyzing a stock for its potential and existing trends. Both measures are relied upon heavily by successful traders, and combined; they offer an insightful peek inside the workings of a stock. They specifically allow traders to gauge whether or not a given stock is overbought or oversold. The overbought/undersold measure should never be underestimated for it allows a trader to see where the directional bearings are for a given stock. Are buyers more represented? Are sellers dominating? Both these indicators help I determining this general direction of the marketplace. CFs prevailing reading for its 14-day RSI is 48.90%; this means, on current reading, that the stock is neutral, suggesting that the stock is relatively stable in terms of potential price directional movement in either direction. The stochastic reading offers a supplementary outlook for directional movement of CF. Stochastic readings amassed over the last thirty days have created a score of 51.91%. This indicates that the stock is neither overbought or oversold at current levels.

Adding other technical indicators to a trading strategy can often lead to bigger results. These additional indicators, especially the ones tied to performance, can go a long way in providing a surer path to success. A picture is by now surely emerging on the directional thrust of (CF); that emerging picture is proving to be a magnet for traders that have previously shown an interest. The +0.44 has manifested a positive reading in the last month or so of trading since it began its initial directional move. Longer-term, the stock has outperform the S&P 500 by -10.8%. This has created higher daily volatility when matched with stocks of the same class. Things look the same when measured historically. Historical volatility provides a measure of 35.03%. CF therefore offers a handy picture of overall momentum based on the foregoing measures. The last, but certainly not least, indicator that helps paint the overall picture of viability is the average true range which is currently 3.37. Combined, all the indicators when synchronized properly can yield excellent trading results.

CFs market machinations have now been laid bare. All the technicals dissected above have now revealed their hand and any trader can see what they should do with the stock. Only a fool would ignore these powerful messages.

A Number review dizzying double-take on the question of cloning – The Guardian

Caryl Churchills two-hander zips along in an hour, so most evenings theres a talk scheduled beforehand. Presented with the Edinburgh international science festival, each of these conversations picks up on the playwrights theme about the meaning of identity in a hi-tech world. On the night I was there, it was social psychologist Aleks Krotoski and musician-cum-thinker Pat Kane considering the many faces we present to the real and online worlds.

Can we define ourselves as the sum total of our Facebook profiles, Twitter feeds and Instagram selfies? Is any one version of ourselves more true than the others? Or is it that, with or without technology, our sense of self has always been fluid, circumstantial and provisional?

If you leave that talk feeling uncertain of who you are, youll be set even further adrift by the teasing speculations of A Number. Directed with a crisp combination of stillness and urgency by Zinnie Harris, Churchills 2002 play begins with a simple premise: the idea that cloning could produce any amount indeed, a number of genetically identical human beings. That being the case, she asks in a sequence of fraught, unresolved encounters between genetic father and multiple sons, what would it do to the childs sense of self?

How would the cloned Bernard react if he met one of his identical brothers? Could they really be said to be the same person? How can you make sense of the world when youre not even sure youre the genuine article yourself? What role do environmental factors play in a childs developing individuality? Why do we think being unique is such a big deal anyway?

These are more than just abstract questions. Thanks to Churchills formal playfulness, we must scramble to catch up with which version of Bernard were watching at any one time. In this way, the characters uncertainty becomes our own. On the one hand there are the ethical questions about Dolly-the-sheep-style cloning; on the other are the existential questions about who we think we are.

Its dizzying stuff, not least because Fred Mellers telescopic set, with variants of the same DNA-string wallpaper appearing on successive walls, suggests we may be viewing just one austere living room among many. You can imagine cloned variations of Churchills play stretching into the distance.

Adding to the unease is the absence of women. The scenario is purposely all male. We are told about a mother, but she is long out of the picture and the cloning has taken place after her death. That leaves Peter Forbes as a father full of typically male regrets about heavy drinking and absenteeism, and Brian Ferguson as the sons who are variously angry, violent and placid.

They inhabit a masculine world, brooding, confrontational and aggressive. Giving tight, on-edge performances, Forbes and Ferguson circle and pace like caged beasts as if forever searching for the archetypal feminine balance denied them by a morally provocative technology.

Lucknow: Probe in the mass cloning cyber fraud has thrown up names of four bank branches in the city. For the past 10 days, Hazratganj-based cyber cell has been flooded with complaints about fraudulent transactions through debit card even though the ATM card remained in possession of the victims throughout. It was found that the money was withdrawn in Vadodara, Gujarat, in all the cases and a majority of transactions were valued Rs 40,000. The fraud occurred between April 1 and 5. As at least 60 complaints have been received, police coordinated with the bank. "The customers who have been targeted had savings account in one of the four branches which are located at Ashok Marg, Jawahar Bhawan, Secretariat or Aminabad," said in-charge of the cell, VVS Sirohi. The chief manager of the said bank, Ashish Mishra, is expected to furnish details of all such cases in the next few days. Though cloning is becoming commonplace with the use of skimmers at commercial establishments, securing PINs is not possible without placing snooping devices inside ATM booths. "The only ways to go about this kind of a fraud is either by installing some electronic devices at ATM booths or by hacking into the database of the bank," said additional superintendent Triveni Singh who heads the cyber wing of the special task force.
