Last year, Elon Musk announcedvia Twitter his intention to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging as a way to avoid traffic. He later shareda clever name for the initiative The Boring Company and though information is still scarce, the project does seem to be coming along nicely.

It now has a websitewitha futuristic concept video, and this week, what appears to be massive, branded proof of the Boring Companys first drilling machine hit the internet.The image should go a long way toward alleviating lingering doubts that The Boring Company is anything more than a billionaires idea of a joke or a cover-up for Musk to work on a Hyperloop in secret.

When Musk spoke on the concept of tunneling at the Hyperloop Pod Competitions first phase in 2016, he called it a really simple and obvious idea. He laterexplained to Bloombergthat he considers it a more practical solutionto traffic congestion than airborne vehicles, which would require more infrastructure and regulatory approval though those obstacles arent stoping companies like Uber and E-Volofrom pursuing the tech.

While it may not be as cool as SpaceXs plans to colonizeMars, Teslas tech to power self-driving cars, or Neuralinks goal ofmerging our brains with machines,you cant deny what a simple hole in the ground could do to manage vehicle congestion in urban areas.

Given Musks track record when it comes to introducing practical innovations built on remarkable tech, it certainly looks like it wont be long before Musks Boring Company starts creating as much buzz as any of his other ventures. Clearly, the first step to that is adding a store to the website so they can start selling some of that cool merch Musk showed off last month.

Given the remarkable advances that have been made in medicine in recent years, its hard to believe anything is still truly impossible. Artificial intelligences are diagnosing diseases, real-life cyborgs walk among us, and were finding promising new clues on ourquest for immortality. Even more remarkable breakthroughs are on the way, but if any one research team truly faces seemingly insurmountable odds, it has to be that of Professor Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group.

Four years ago, the acclaimed neurosurgeon announced his plan to complete the worlds first human head transplant, and this week, in an interview with OOOM, he confirmed that the controversial operation will take place within the next 10 months. According to Canavero, the operation will occur in Harbin, China, with Xiaoping Ren of Harbin Medical University leading the surgical team, and contrary to previous reports, a Chinese citizen, not Russian Valery Spiridonov, will be the recipient of a donor body.

However, the most remarkable news to come out of Canaveros interview doesnt have anything to do with the head transplant at all, but what he plans to do afterwards: As soon as the first human head transplant has taken place, i.e., no later than in 2018, we will be able to attempt to reawaken the first frozen head.

Canavero plans to remove the brain from a head that has been frozen at -196 degrees Celsius (-320 degrees Fahrenheit) and submerged in liquid nitrogen. Hell then place the brain in a donor body in an attempt to effectively bring the patient back from the dead and, in the process, clear up humanitys questions about the afterlife.

If we bring this person back to life, we will receive the first real account of what actually happens after death, said Canavero. The head transplant gives us the first insight into whether there is an afterlife, a heaven, a hereafter, or whatever you may want to call it or whether death is simply a flicking off of the light switch and thats it.

Clearly, this is the stuff of science fiction, and the medical community and society at large has every reason to be very skeptical of its potential for success.

The advocates of cryogenics are unable to cite any study in which a whole mammalian brain has been resuscitated after storage in liquid nitrogen, Clive Coen, Professor of Neuroscience at Kings College London, told The Telegraph, adding, Irreversible damage is caused during the process of taking the mammalian brain into sub-zero temperatures.

Even if it did work and the frozen brain did wake up, theres no telling what kinds of complications the patient could experience, from decreased mental faculties to unimaginable mental trauma. Though we do now live in a world in which the seemingly impossible is becoming possible, some experiments might be better suited for works of sci-fi than modern hospitals.

New Research Shows That Time Travel Is Mathematically Possible – Futurism

Even before Einstein theorized that time is relative and flexible, humanity had already been imagining the possibility of time travel. In fact, science fiction is filled withtime travelers. Some use metahuman abilities to do so, but most rely on a device generally known as a time machine. Now, two physicists think that its time to bring the time machine into the real world sort of.

People think of time travel as something as fiction. And we tend to think its not possible because we dont actually do it,Ben Tippett, a theoretical physicist and mathematician from the University of British Columbia, said in a UBC news release. But, mathematically, it is possible.

Essentially, what Tippet and University of Maryland astrophysicist David Tsang developed is a mathematical formula that uses Einsteins General Relativity theory to prove that time travel is possible, in theory. That is, time travel fitting a laypersons understanding of the concept as moving backwards and forwards through time and space, as interpreted by an external observer, according to the abstract of their paper, which ispublished in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity.

Oh, and theyre calling it a TARDIS yes, Doctor Who fans, hurray! which stands for a Traversable Acausal Retrograde Domain in Space-time.

My model of a time machine uses the curved space-time to bend time into a circle for the passengers, not in a straight line, Tippet explained. That circle takes us back in time. Simply put, their model assumes that time could curve around high-mass objects in the same way that physical space does in the universe.

For Tippet and Tsang, a TARDIS is a space-time geometry bubble that travels faster than the speed of light. It is a box which travels forwards and then backwards in time along a circular path through spacetime, they wrote in their paper.

Unfortunately,its still not possible to construct such a time machine. While is it mathematically feasible, it is not yet possible to build a space-time machine because we need materials which we call exotic matter to bend space-time in these impossible ways, but they have yet to be discovered, Tippet explained.

Indeed, their work isnt the first to suggest that time traveling can be done. Various other experiments, including those that rely on photon stimulation, suggest that time travel is feasible. Another theory explores the potential particles of time.

However, some think that a time machine wouldnt be feasible because time traveling itself isnt possible. One points to the intimate connection between time and energyas the reason time travelingis improbable. Another suggests that time travel isnt going to work because theres no future to travel to yet.

Whatever the case may be, theres one thing that these researchers all agree on. As Tippet put it, Studying space-time is both fascinating and problematic.

On April 18, Earth breached its latest climate change milestone when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were measured at 410 parts per million (ppm). The Keeling Curve, a University of California San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography program,recorded the milestone at Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. This was sobering for scientists, albeit hardly surprising: since last year when our planets dangerous new normal atmospheric CO2 levels were 400 ppm scientists have warned the public that the next milestone of 410 ppm was coming.

Were in a new era, Ralph Keeling, director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanographys CO2 Program in San Diego told Yale Environment 360. And its going fast. Were going to touch up against 410 pretty soon.

There is nothing uniquely significant about the numbers 400 or 410, but they offer points for comparison to scientists. These milestones are just numbers, but they give us an opportunity to pause and take stock and act as useful yard sticks for comparisons to the geological record, University of Southampton paleoclimate researcher Gavin Foster told Climate Central in March.

Now more than ever it is critical that all countries work together to achieve a greener world. While natural factors like El Nio have driven more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past two years, these new records are mostly driven by humans burning fossil fuels in tremendous amounts, in turn creating record amounts of carbon dioxide.

The rate of increase will go down when emissions decrease, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) atmospheric scientist Pieter Tans told Climate Central. But carbon dioxide will still be going up, albeit more slowly. Only when emissions are cut in half will atmospheric carbon dioxide level off initially.

Recognizing the importance of taking action to stop climate change, scientists and laypeople across the United States marched for science on Earth Day, April 22. The focus of the march was science rather than political ideology. Addressing the crowd in San Diego, Keeling declared: The climate change debate has been over for decades.

Recent research shows that the global energy supply must be only 25 percent (or less) dependent on fossil fuels by 2100 to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Various countries are taking action to meet their own goals that are in accord with these global guidelines. China, for example, has introduced a cap on coal and will peak coal emission by 2030. Germany will ban combustion engines by 2030. Here in the U.S., high-profile advocates for the environment have funded a 20-year clean energy fund to the tune of $1 billion.

Britain recently set a record the world was happy to see: it had its first coal-free power day in 135 years. Now is the time for a concerted, worldwide effort, so hopefully well start seeing more positive records like that one.

Its easy to talk about humanitys role in deep space exploration, but its another thing to actually figure out the logistics of the endeavor. One of the greatest risks involved in human space exploration is the risk of radiation. While the Earth and Sun do pose some radiation risk to our astronauts, the greatest source of trouble comes from outer spaceand is known as galactic cosmic radiation, ancient waves emanating from supernovas of the past.

NASA astronauts are listed as radiation workers by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In accordance with NASA, OSHA has worked to establish the ALARA Principle, meaning that NASA keeps radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable. With this in mind, OSHA waived the terrestrial radiation requirements for NASA, having the Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer set the limit. This lead to the current protocol that ensures that astronauts arent exposed to radiation that will increase their risk of death from cancer by more than 3percent. But if its a trip to Mars that were talking about, these low-Earth orbit standards will be modified to fit the expedition.

While NASA has learned a lot with previous research into the long-term effects of living in space, the space agency still has a ton of data to understand, and even more ethical gray areas to define. When on the International Space Station, astronauts are exposed to ten times as much radiation as on Earth. A Mars trip would up that exposure to 100 times more than on Earth. NASA has begun to study the effects of long-term exposure with the help of astronaut Scott Kelly, Mark Kelly (his Earth-dwelling retiree twin), and cosmonautMikhail Kornienko.

For as long as there have been catalogs of health effects, radiation has been the most intractable, most severe, hardest problem to solve, says Dan Masys, biomedical and health informaticist of the University of Washington. Now, 20 or more years into advances in space technology and propulsion and systems and vehicles, radiation is still the deal breaker. It has never changed. NASA is working on various means of lessening exposure to radiation, with faster rockets, better barriers between the astronauts and space, and drugs all on the table.

But at the end of the day, the question isnt about a group of brave astronauts, its about the future of humanity. Billionaire tech innovators like Elon Musk are lobbying for humanityseventual expansion in our solar system for the key reason of preserving humanity itself. In order to ensure that a single catastrophic event doesnt spell out the end times for the only life we know to exist in the universe, we must push it forward, or as Musk suggests: establish a colony of 1 million people on Mars as soon as we feasibly can.

Two-dimensional materials have been creating a buzz recently, ever since scientists were able to isolate graphene. Research into other 2D materials abounds, as these have potential applications in a wide range of fields, including photovoltaics, semiconductors, and electrodes. Now, researchers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and elsewhere have explored the physics behind these 2D materials and their potential to push computing to new levels of power and speed.

In particular, the UCI researchers published a study in the journal Nature that details the development of 2D quantum materials that have breakthrough electrical and magnetic attributes that can make topological quantum computers which are still theoretical and other advanced electronics possible.

Finally, we can take exotic, high-end theories in physics and make something useful, said Jing Xia, UCI associate professor of physics andastronomy. Were exploring the possibility of making topological quantum computers for the next 100 years.

The 2D materials were observed under extremely cold temperatures using a fiber-optic Sagnac interferometer microscope, a sensitive magnetic microscope built by Xia. It can handle and accurately analyze minuscule material samples.

The UCI researchers developed a compound called chromium germanium telluride (CGT), a superthin carbon film. Just like graphene, CGT can potentially replace silicon in next-generation computers. However, unlike graphene, CGT also has magnetic properties that also make it a viable material for a computers memory and storage systems.

In another study, published in the journalScience Advances, the UCI team observed another 2D material. Under the Sagnac interferometer, they found that in the interface between bismuth and nickel theres an exotic superconductor that breaks time-reversal symmetry.

Both materials conduct electronic signals carried by Dirac or Majorana fermions and not by electrons, as in silicon. Because they dont have mass, these particles can move almost at the speed of light, and are ideal for braiding operations that are needed in quantum computing.

The issue now is to try to achieve this at normal temperatures, Xia said. A separate study that appeared in Nature Materials explores just that, proving that its possible to stabilize 2D surface states. This is necessary for working quantum computers, as existing ones are already limited by extreme conditions that allow quantum bits (qubits) to function. Qubits are at the heart of what makes quantum computers powerful. Unlike regular binary bits, qubits can be 0s and 1s at the same time, allowing them to process information better. 2D materials can create better processors to handle these qubits.

Once quantum computers become workable in regular conditions, they are expected to change the way research is done, allowing us to solve the worlds most complex problems faster than ever before.

A Futurist Consultant Explains How She Developed Terrifying Tech in ‘The Circle’ – Broadly

To build a post-privacy world in "The Circle," Yvette Granata applied her background studying art and artificial intelligence.

The trailer for The Circle, which hit theaters Friday, takes Emma Watson's character Mae from a confident job interview to the stage of a packed auditorium, with both hands on her face trying to bottle in her scream at some offscreen horror.

In between, she lands that job at a tech company called the Circle, which is trying to revolutionize how knowledgeincluding real-time, video streamed knowledgeis shared online. Soon, Mae is asked to be the company's guinea pig for a "transparency" experiment, living her whole life in the public eye, and in the process losing touch with her family and closest friends.

The Circle explores how much privacy we're willing to sacrifice for convenience, career, and conformity. The tech dystopia shown in the movie, adapted from a 2013 novel, may feel eerily familiar if you've ever worried about how much your phone knows about you. And it should: We already have most of the technologies seen in the filmwe just haven't invested in or developed them as much.

That's according to Yvette Granata, who studies the intersection of art and technology. During the summer of 2015, she spent two weeks on the set of The Circle as a futurist consultanta title she admits may sound more glamorous than the job really is. Drawing on her background in film and academic research into artificial intelligence, she offered advice to the art department and other crew members on details like what materials phones were made of and where server farms were located, to bigger things like how to portray tech like drones or video feeds.

Granata was one of several consultants the movie brought in to help make the film's world of tech dystopia seem real, but she says her art background gave her a different perspective from other futurist consultants, who tend to focus exclusively on Silicon Valley. "The great thing about art is you learn how to always push your creativity and put yourself in different situations and try new things," Granata explains. "It allows us to see things that we wouldn't necessarily see."

Even with her extensive knowledge of the tech world, Granata says she was surprised by how strongly the movie's portrayal of a post-privacy society struck her. "It definitely made me think more about the convergence of social media and surveillance and the Internet of Things," she says. "But how far it goes is really scary, and I think the movie really does push it so it's something else."

Especially fascinating to consider, Granata says, is the social context of a gadget. The devices themselves, she says, are all about technologybut what we do with them is cultural. Right now, she notes, a lot of new tech comes from men, so these innovations tend to address the wants and needs those men see.

That's why Granata particularly likes to explore the ways technology can build a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future through things like more creative types of artificial intelligence or social madia-based sharing economies. Whether Granata and people like her succeed in building this future will determine whether or not The Circle becomes reality.

On April 18, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis arrived in Saudi Arabia to meet with King Salman and other high-ranking officials in the kingdom as part of a regional trip, which also included stops in Djibouti, Egypt, Israel and Qatar. Mattis said that his frank candid honest talks with the Saudis could not have gone better.

The Pentagon chief praised the kingdom, which he called one of Washingtons best counterterrorism partners, for stepping up to its regional leadership role to restore stability in this key region of the world. The following day an official from the administration suggested that Donald Trump may soon make his first visit to Saudi Arabia as president of the United States. While speaking with Mohammad bin Salman, Saudi Arabias Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister, Mattis stated that it serves Washingtons interest to see a strong Saudi Arabia.

Building on Mohammed bin Salmans visit to the White House in March, which Saudi officials claimed marked a historic turning point in U.S.-Saudi relations, Mattis recent trip to Riyadh served to further strengthen Saudi confidence in the Trump administrations approach to countering Irans mischief. After commending Saudi Arabia for supporting two close U.S. alliesEgypt and JordanMattis condemned Iran for backing Lebanese Hezbollah and Bashar al-Assads regime in Damascus, as well as deploying its own military forces to Syria. He pointed to Irans delivery of weapons to Ansarullah (the dominant Houthi militia), saying that Iran once again is no help. Although the international community can make progress on Yemen, Mattis declared that it must first overcome Irans efforts to destabilize yet another country and create another militia in their image of Lebanese Hezbollah.

Endless Atrocities: The US Role in Creating the North Korean Fortress-State – Center for Research on Globalization

Paul Atwood, a Senior Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, provides a concise summary of the history that informs North Koreas relations with the United States and drives its determination never to submit to any American diktat.

Atwood notes it is an American myth that the North Korean Army suddenly attacked without warning, overwhelming surprised ROK defenders. In fact, the North/South border had been progressively militarized and there had been numerous cross border incursions by both sides going back to 1949.

Part of what made the USs ultimate destruction of Korea (which involved essentially a colossal version of one of the cross-border incursions) inevitable was the goal of US planners to access or control global resources, markets and cheaper labor power.

In its full invasion of the North, the US acted under the banner of the United Nations. However, the UN at that time was largely under the control of the United States, and as Professor Carl Boggs (PhD political science, UC Berkeley) puts it, essentially was the United States. (28)

While it is still today the worlds most powerful military empire, the US was then at the peak of its global dominance the most concentrated power-center in world history. Almost all allies and enemies had been destroyed in World War II while the US strategically preserved its forces, experiencing just over 400,000 overall war-related deaths after Germany and Japan declared war on the US, whereas Russia, for example, lost tens of millions fending off the Nazi invasion. Boggs further notes that as the UN gradually democratized, US capacity to dictate UN policy waned, with the US soon becoming the world leader in UN vetoes. (154)

In South Korea, tens of thousands of guerrillas who had originated in peoples committees in the South fought the Americans and the ROK (Republic of Korea), the Southern dictatorship set up by the US. Before hot war broke out, the ROK military over mere weeks summarily executed some 100,000 to 1 million (74) (S. Brian Wilson puts the figure at 800,000) guerillas and peasant civilians, many of whom the dictatorship lured into camps with the promise of food. This was done with US knowledge and sometimes under direct US supervision, according to historian Kim Dong-choon and others (see Wilson above for more sources). The orders for the executions undoubtedly came from the top, which was dictator Syngman Rhee, the US-installed puppet, and the US itself, which controlled South Koreas military.After the war, the US helped try to cover up these executions, an effort that largely succeeded until the 1990s.

At a point in the war when the US was on the verge of defeat, General Douglas MacArthur

announced that he saw unique opportunities for the deployment of atomic weapons. This call was taken up by many in Congress.

Truman rejected this idea and instead authorized MacArthur to conduct the famous landings at Inchon in September 1950, which threw North Korean troops into disarray and MacArthur began pushing them back across the 38th Parallel, the line the US had arbitrarily drawn to artificially divide Korea, where there was overwhelming support for unification among the countrys population as a whole. The US then violated its own artificial border and pushed into the North.

China warned the US it would not sit by while the its neighbor was invaded (China itself also feared being invaded), but MacArthur shrugged this off, saying if the Chinese tried to get down to Pyongyang he would slaughter them, adding, we are the best. MacArthur then ordered airstrikes to lay waste thousands of square miles of northern Korea bordering China and ordered infantry divisions ever closer to its border.

It was the terrible devastation of this bombing campaign, worse than anything seen during World War II short of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that to this day dominates North Koreas relations with the United States and drives its determination never to submit to any American diktat.

General Curtis Lemay directed this onslaught. It was he who had firebombed Tokyo in March 1945 saying it was about time we stopped swatting at flies and gone after the manure pile. It was he who later said that the US ought to bomb North Vietnam back into the stone age. Remarking about his desire to lay waste to North Korea he said We burned down every town in North Korea and South Korea too. Lemay was by no means exaggerating.

Lemay estimated the US killed off some 20% of the [North Korean] population.(For comparison, the highest percentage of population lost in World War II was in Poland, which lost approximately 16.93 to 17.22% of its people overall.) Dean Rusk, who later became a Secretary of State, said the US targeted and attempted to execute every person that moved in North Korea, and tried to knock over every brick standing on top of another.

Boggs gives many examples of mass atrocities, one taking place in 1950 when the US rounded up nearly 1,000 civilians who were then beaten, tortured, and shot to death by US troops, another in Pyongyang when the US summarily executed 3,000 people, mostly women and children, and another when the US executed some 6,000 civilians, many with machine guns, many by beheading them with sabers. He notes this list, just of the major atrocities, goes on endlessly. (75)

When Chinese forces followed through on their threat and entered North Korea, successfully pushing back US troops, Truman then threatened China with nuclear weapons, saying they were under active consideration. For his part, MacArthur demanded the bombs As he put it in his memoirs:

I would have dropped between thirty and fifty atomic bombsstrung across the neck of Manchuriaand spread behind us from the Sea of Japan to the Yellow Sea- a belt of radioactive cobalt. It has an active life of between 60 and 120 years.

Cobalt it should be noted is at least 100 times more radioactive than uranium.

He also expressed a desire for chemicals and gas.

In 1951 the U.S. initiated Operation Strangle, which officials estimated killed at least 3 million people on both sides of the 38th parallel, but the figure is probably closer to 4 million [mostly civilians and mostly resulting from US aerial bombardments in which civilians were deliberately targeted (54, 67-8), as were schools, hospitals, and churches (65). Estimates for the death toll also go much higher than 4 million (74)].

Boggs notes US propaganda during this time period (the US was a world leader in eugenics scholarship and race-based legal discrimination) dehumanized Asians and facilitated targeting and mass executions of inferior civilians: the US decision to target civilians was planned and systematic, going to the top of the power structure. no one was ever charged Some in the US forces, such as General Matthew Ridgeway, claimed the war was a Christian jihad in defense of God. (54-5) Analysts at George Washington University, looking at US contingency plans from this era to wipe out much of the worlds population with nuclear weapons, determined a likely rationale for the USs doctrine of targeting of civilians is to reduce the morale of the enemy civilian population through fear the definition of terrorism.

Atwood continues:

The question of whether the U.S. carried out germ warfare has been raised but has never been fully proved or disproved. The North accused the U.S. of dropping bombs laden with cholera, anthrax, plague, and encephalitis and hemorrhagic fever, all of which turned up among soldiers and civilians in the north. Some American prisoners of war confessed to such war crimes but these were dismissed as evidence of torture by North Korea on Americans. However, none of the U.S. POWs who did confess and were later repatriated were allowed to meet the press. A number of investigations were carried out by scientists from friendly western countries. One of the most prominent concluded the charges were true.

At this time the US was engaged in top secret germ-warfare research [including non-consensual human experimentation] with captured Nazi and Japanese germ warfare experts, and also [conducting non-consensual human experimentation on tens of thousands of people, including in gas chambers and aerial bombardments, with mustard gas and other chemical weapons,] experimenting with Sarin[later including non-consensual human experimentation], despite its ban by the Geneva Convention.

Boggs notes the US had substantial stocks of biological weapons and US leaders thought they might be able to keep their use secret enough to make a plausible denial. They also thought that if their use was uncovered, the US could simply remind its accusers that it had never signed the 1925 Geneva Protocol on biological warfare. (135-6)

A 1952 US government film made to instruct the US armed forces on the USs offensive biological and chemical warfare program says the US can deliver a biological or chemical attack hundreds of miles inland from any coastline to attack a large portion of an enemys population. The film shows US soldiers filling bio/chemical dispersal containers for contamination of enemy areas, and then a cartoon depiction of US bio/chem weapons agents being delivered from US ships, passing over Korea, and covering huge swathes of China.

Boggs notes

the US apparently hoped the rapid spread of deadly diseases would instill panic in Koreans and Chinese, resulting in a collapse of combat morale. (136)

Atwood adds that as in the case of the Rhee/US mass executions of South Koreans, Washington blamed the evident use of germ warfare on the communists.

The US also used napalm, a fiery gel that sticks to and burns through targets,

extensively, completely and utterly destroying the northern capital of Pyongyang. By 1953 American pilots were returning to carriers and bases claiming there were no longer any significant targets in all of North Korea to bomb. In fact a very large percentage of the northern population was by then living in tunnels dug by hand underground. A British journalist wrote that the northern population was living a troglodyte existence. In the Spring of 1953 US warplanes hit five of the largest dams along the Yalu river completely inundating and killing Pyongyangs harvest of rice. Air Force documents reveal calculated premeditation saying that Attacks in May will be most effective psychologically because it was the end of the rice-transplanting season before the roots could become completely embedded. Flash floods scooped out hundreds of square miles of vital food producing valleys and killed untold numbers of farmers.

At Nuremberg after WWII, Nazi officers who carried out similar attacks on the dikes of Holland, creating a mass famine in 1944, were tried as criminals and some were executed for their crimes.

Atwood concludes it is the collective memory of the above that animates North Koreas policies toward the US today.

Under no circumstances could any westerner reasonably expect that the North Korean regime would simply submit to any ultimatums by the US, by far the worst enemy Korea ever had measured by the damage inflicted on the entirety of the Korean peninsula.
