Orphans turn sailors for fun day on the high seas – Pattaya Mail

In this day and age of what seems to be almost daily bad news, it comes as a great relief to be able to bring an uplifting story about a group of good people.
A small band of sailors, based at Ocean Marina Yacht Club near Pattaya, got together recently and organized a day out for the children of the Camillus Foundation of Thailand. These are orphans and most of them carry the added burden of being infected with HIV. By giving their time, energy and resources, this small group of sailors provided a day out to remember for 50 children and their ten carers. It was also a day out to remember for the organizers because these children were so happy, well behaved and appreciative of the days fun.
Credit must also go to the staff and management at Ocean Marina Yacht Club who backed up the organizers with enormous help and assistance, both on and off the water, and a big thanks goes to them.
The weather was very kind and provided a nice calm day with good shade from the normally merciless sun. And so a small flotilla set off from the marina in yachts ranging from multi-million dollar catamarans to small racing yachts so that the children could witness the wide variety of craft based here that provide fun for their owners.
There was just enough wind to blow the flotilla slowly to anchor just off Bang Saray. This is when the real fun started with the children jumping into the small dinghies and canoes supplied by Ocean Marina. Paddling around on a nice flat sea gave them a chance to let off steam and judging by the shouts of excitement, this is when they could all enjoy the water. Swimming was also on the agenda and included some screaming while jumping off the high deck of the biggest boat. If the noise level was any indication of the fun being had it was very high indeed!
The relative quiet that followed was an indication that lunch had arrived and appetites were high. Then it was time to head back to the marina. Luckily the wind had picked up enough for the small racing yachts to give the children their first taste of what racing is all about, and judging by their reaction and screams they all seemed to enjoy it.
And so it was back to terra firma but the fun had not stopped. The children politely lined up to receive their t-shirts, emblazoned with a sailing yacht, as a memento of the day. Then it was group photo time followed by some heart tugging thank you speeches from a whole range of children of all ages, down to a two year old that simply stole everyones heart. Luckily the mood was lightened with the arrival of some delicious ice cream, generously sponsored by a local company that is always at the front of the queue when it comes to offering help on such occasions.
It is a great credit to the foundation that cares for these children that they were all well dressed, well behaved and polite but still retained that essential of all children full of life and mischievousness.
A big thank you goes to the organizers and everyone who contributed to a wonderful day!

Please plan on your flight arriving no later than 2:30pm to ensure you catch this transfer. We depart at 9:00am from Peter Island for the return (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday only) to St. Thomas so flights should be scheduled to depart after 1:30pm. If your flight is delayed, please call the Peter Island Front Desk at, (284) 495-2000. At least 7-days notice for St. Thomas transfers is required by calling the Rooms Reservations Office: 1-800-346-4451. The closest airport to Peter Island is the Beef Island Airport (EIS) on Tortola and this is serviced with air connections through San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) or Antigua (ANU). We can send a Peter Island ferry any day or time to pick you up from the Beef Island Airport. If you choose this option, please provide us with your arriving and departing flights into and departing from Beef Island Airport. Once we receive this information, we will be able to schedule your transfers.
Once you arrive at the Beef Island Airport, you will have to clear customs and immigration and retrieve your luggage. A Peter Island Resort Representative will be there to greet you afterward. The greeter will escort you to the awaiting Peter Island car service that will take you to the Peter Island Ferry Dock. The ferry ride to Peter Island is approximately 30 minutes. Cost for this transfer is $85 per person round-trip ($50 per person one-way), which includes the car and ferry service, and is not payable until checkout. At least 7-days notice for Tortola transfers is required by calling the Rooms Reservations Office: 1-800-346-4451.
Public ferry schedules from Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, to Road Town, Tortola, can be found at BVIWelcome.com. The public ferry will drop off in Road Town, Tortola, where you will then take a taxi to the Peter Island dock (CSY) and transfer to Peter Island on our private ferry. Please let us know which ferry option you will be taking so we know when to expect you. Round-trip transfers from Tortola are $85 per person, or one-way are, $50 per person.

Western Lit: ‘The Unsettlers’ Tells the Stories of Characters Who Have Gone Far Beyond ‘Good Enough’ – Coachella Valley Independent

For Mark Sundeen, the search began with a guilty meat snack.
After two decades of bumming around the countryfirst as a outdoorsman stringing together jobs in the rural West, and later as a city-bound freelancer and money-lung whose sole purpose was to inhale dollars, transform them into pleasure, then exhale a stream of carbon into the air, feces into the sewer, and plastic containers into the landfillSundeen settled in Missoula, Mont., seeking a simpler existence.
He got engaged to a woman with similar values, bike-commuted 14 miles daily, lived on garden feasts that took hours to concoct, and left the sink cluttered with wholesome dirt clods.
In a world where human appetites obliterate entire ecosystems, Sundeen recognized that what we choose to consume has moral implications. But one night while grocery shopping, faced with the $6.50 price tag on organic butter, he brokeand headed instead for the much-cheaper stuff in the conventional food aisles. There, he succumbed to a greasy breast of fried chicken, no doubt factory-raised on monoculture grain and cruelly caged with a throng of its brethren. Then, he wiped his sins away with a moist towelette and pedaled home.
Its a wry encapsulation of a conundrum that those who aspire to sustainability face: We carve out sacrifices here and thereDrive less! Recycle! Install solar!until they interfere with other desires. In search of a clearer path, Sundeen, author of The Man Who Quit Money, sets out to find people who have gone far beyond what most of us consider good enough.
The result is The Unsettlers: In Search of the Good Life in Todays America, a gorgeous new book that provides a contemporary twist on Wendell Berrys 1977 classic The Unsettling of America. Where Berry argues that industrial agribusiness and modern capitalism have distanced people from the land and each other, with catastrophic consequences for the environment and communities, Sundeen explores a movement toward radical simplicity meant to solve those ills, digging deep into peculiarly American strains of utopianism and telling the stories of three couples trying to live out their ideals in wildly different places.
Olivia Hubert, a black horticulturalist, and Greg Willerer, a white former teacher with roots in the anarchist punk scene, create a tiny urban farm, hoping to localize and humanize Detroits inner-city food systempart of a bigger ambition to build a more-just version of a city bludgeoned by industrial collapse, racism and poverty. There is Ethan Hughes, who led a cross-country, bike-driven superhero expedition to do good, and his wife, Sarah Wilcox, a classically trained soprano, who created a car-free, electricity-free intentional community in Missouri that engages in nonviolent activism. Finally, we meet Luci Brieger and Steve Elliott, who founded a successful small organic farm not far from Missoula, and catalyzed a vibrant local food scene across western Montana.
The book is part memoirchronicling Sundeens own new marriage and quest for a better lifepart interwoven biography, and part social history. But though Sundeen finds beauty in each of the couples lives, he doesnt flatten them into human Instagrams, the soft-focus shots of sun-dappled mason jars and fresh-picked pears that tug at the hearts of the rest of us cubicle-bound hordes. Hubert and Willerer must run off armed intruders from the crackhouse across the street instead of merely grappling with gophers as other farmers do. Hughes and Wilcox grow weary of the infighting so common in intentional communities and grope to maintain momentum when few of their peers are willing to commit to the enterprise for more than a summer. And Brieger and Elliott watch their dream enter mainstream society as yet another piece of the corporate machine: mega-organic agriculture that plants sprawling monocultures and sends plastic-sealed produce thousands of miles, driving right over the environmental and community benefits of the small, diversified farms that the couple built their own lives around.
The characters are weird, stubborn and strong, and Sundeen provides a nuanced picture of their beliefs, underpinned by both religious and social justice movements and influences ranging from Berry and Thomas Jefferson to the Quakers, Booker T. Washington, the Nation of Islam, Tolstoy and Gandhi. Importantly, Sundeen also acknowledges that the renunciation of privilege can become just another means of exercising it.
In the end, nobody finds revelatory answers, and yet all persist despite obstacles. And Sundeen himself recognizes that his own role is not to be a pioneer of simple living, but to be what he already is: a writer. The book seems to suggest that the true recipe for revolution is not utopianism, per se, but the emotional foundations from which its practitioners strive. In other words, to live right, one must find true purpose, work hard in its service and do the best good she can.

The world is a mess. Danger lurks everywhere. Evil is winning.
Look. The world is changing. Everything you knew about the world of your youth is gone. The landscape is all different. Evil is afoot.
There is really nothing much you can do about it. Stop trying to fix the world. Its outside of your control. Most of the world will be taken over by evil. Accept it. Stop letting your pride think you can do something about it. You cant.
There is something you can do. It is not all hopeless. The world might give way to evil, but you can encase yourself in your own intentional community, holding up against the evils of the world as you preserve yourself from its evil influence.
You should not seek out for what you can do for others. Stop thinking you can help them out. They are a lost cause. Rather, seek to bring your people together and in create for them and yourself a small little stronghold of the good.
Anyone who asks for your help, turn away. If you help them, they will be using resources which you and your community needs.
Think this through.
You are old. You have done your duty for others, now is the time for you to rest.
Is it your fault it is now a dark time, and the world is falling apart? No. You have done what you can for the world. You have done good. But now it is time for you to retire.
Those who would pick your bones and grow fat on your resources claim they want to go to war to save the world, but all they would do is live off of you as a parasite, as the world crumbles around us.
There is nothing you can do to save other communities. Once you understand this, you can truly get to work with your one last good. You can build up your own small community and protect it against all outsiders. Be kind, welcome those who are willing to join your community if they have something to give to you, but be cautious, and avoid anyone who comes seeking help. They will come and take and take and take until you have nothing left. Then what will you do when the enemy comes for you? Those who truly care for you will ask for nothing and will give of themselves to help defend our community.
Do not tax yourself with the worries of the world. If people come asking for your help, turn them away because of the evil they would bring to our community. You have earned your rest. Go, take your meat, and eat. It is yours. You have earned your keep.
But if you truly feel you must go out, if you feel the need to heed the call and help someone else one last time with your waning strength, go if you must. But remember, I am here for you. Let me take care of your community. I will protect it for you. I will make sure it thrives while you are away. No, I do not recommend going, it is best we keep to ourselves, but if you must go, if you must use up your last remaining strength, know everything is in good hands with me. I will make sure everyone gets what they deserve. I will make sure they will survive, away from the darkness, preserved here, in our bastion of hope. The world outside might perish, but we will survive, and once the time of darkness is over, we will then be free to go out in the world and render it our light.

Area Pastors Look to Connect with Communities More – Afro American

The Collective Empowerment Group, established in 1993 as the Collective Banking Group, has grown from 47 churches to more than 200 religious leaders. In the last three decades, the pastors in the organization have gone from store fronts and warehouses to massive sanctuaries. Now many churches have established community development corporations and have started a variety of businesses.
Our churches need to be about empowering people and that is giving them the toolsand skills to help them along the way, the Rev. Bobby Manning, pastor of the First Baptist Church of District Heights, Md., told attendees at an annual empowerment conference on April 7. He said he likes to host eventsat laundromats in his community in an effort to connect with people.
Mannings sentiments are shared by the Rev. Harold B. Hayes, pastorof HunterMemorial AME Church in Suitland, Md. Hayes said one of his top priorities is building a bridge of communication and understanding between Blacks and Latinos in Suitland. When we talk about Suitland, the Latino population is rising and what must take place is Black and Brown coming together, Hayes told attendees, We have to learn to bridge the gap and be intentional. Couple that with literary and there is no stopping us.
Both Manning and Hayes were at the Ministry Center of the First Baptist Church ofGlenardenon April 7 where the needs of people in their pews were front and center.
It is my vision that the church has to lead the charge when closing the income gap between Blacks and Whites in America, said George C. Fraser, founder and CEO of FaserNet and The Black Wealth Alliance, organizations focused on providing the Black community with training and tools to sustain intergenerational wealth and empowerment. Fraser was the keynote speaker for the conference entitled, Creating Legacy.Com.
Itisimperative that the Black community, driven by the Black church,transform who we are as a peopleand the only way that we can do this is collectively, the Rev. Jonathan Weaver, pastor of Greater Mount Nebo A.M.E. Church in Bowie, Md., who also attended the conference,said.Weaveradded that in the era of President Trump Blacks must do more for themselves.
While Weaver andotherpastorstransitionedfrompreaching inretailbigboxes to multi-millionedifices, theEaster seasonbrings with it a rebirth for church leaders to do more to empower their members. One of the last bastions of hope is the church, said the Rev. Anthony G.Maclin,pastorof the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square in Capital Heights, Md. Churches have to come together so that we can raise the conscious level of our people.
The Rev.MidgettParker, a lawyerand minister who helped coordinate the conference, said This isaboutchurches needingto come togetherto be able touplift all of our people this is about helping people to help ourselves.

Space Matter: Human Bodies and Space Travel :: Science … – Paste Magazine

Space Matter is a weekly column that delves into space science and the mechanics of spaceflight. From the latest discoveries in the universe around us to the fits and starts of rocket test flights, youll find analysis, discussion and an eternal optimism about space and launching ourselves into the cosmos.
Ive previously discussed the challenges of getting to Mars and landing on Mars; its not going to be easy to get humans to the surface of the red planet. And thats not even considering the discussion of what will happen to our bodies on the way. There have been studies documenting the psychological challenges of long-term spaceflight, and weve been studying the effects of zero-g on the human body for years on the International Space Station. But what about space radiation?
Radiation is a huge problem in space travel. The only reason its not a huge problem on Earth is because our planet is protected by a giant magnetic field that extends out into space; its what makes life on Earth possible. It protects our delicate planet from the ravages of space radiation.
There are two types of space radiation that anyone outside the Earths magnetic field has to worry about. The first are called galactic cosmic rays, or GCR radiation. These originate outside our solar system and travel through our galaxy at close to the speed of light. Its likely that these high-energy particles originate in the massive explosions of supernovae, though there is still some disagreement on this matter. These particles are composed of every element from hydrogen to uranium; their distinguishing feature is that theyre ionized, meaning their electrons have been stripped, so they hold a charge. That charge is what makes them interact with (and repelled by) Earths (charged) magnetic field.

The second type of radiation comes from our Sun, and its much more common: solar particles. Our Sun, and all other stars, actually has its own weather. Sunspots are one form this weather takes. What we need to worry about, though, are solar proton events. These occur during solar weather activity (such as solar flaresbut they dont occur during every solar flare) and consist of charged particles (protons again!) that are unleashed into space by the suns magnetic field. Were protected from these particles by our planets magnetic field, but strong solar proton events can be associated with geomagnetic storms, which wreak havoc on the electrical grid.
Outside the protection of the Earths magnetic field, these two types of radiation can be a serious threat to astronauts. Whats more, our own magnetic field poses a threat in and of itself. The Earth is surrounded by radiation belts, called the Van Allen belts, which trap radiation particlestheyre part of how our planet is shielded from these particles. Galactic cosmic rays and charged solar particles fly through space straight into the Van Allen beltswhich means that there are basically giant belts of radioactive death circling our planet (too much?) These belts arent static, but there usually are two of them (sometimes three). The inner Van Allen belt begins about 600 miles above the surface of the Earth; the outer Van Allen belt extends to almost 40,000 miles out. For comparisons sake, the International Space Station, in low-Earth orbit, is 220 miles above the Earths surface, while the Moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth.

But weve been to the Moon, you might be asking. Weve sent a total of nine manned missions around or onto the Moon (Apollo 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17), through the Van Allen radiation belts. This is actually a major factor in the conspiracy theory that the Moon landings were fakedastronauts would die after passing through the Van Allen belts.
Well, no, not quite. The Van Allen radiation belts are very dangerous, but there are ways around them. For one, theyre not a sphere encompassing the planet. Think of the belts surrounding the Earth as a giant donut, where Earth is the donut hole.

The team in charge of Apollos trajectory studied the Van Allen belts closely and charted a flight path that would allow the spacecrafts to bypass the thickest parts of the belt. In fact, Apollo missed the inner belt completely and sped quickly through very thin areas of the outer belt. The short duration of exposure to the belts meant that the spacecrafts aluminum shielding was enough to protect the astronauts. Presumably, NASA could chart a similar trajectory for a Mars mission.
The problem is what happens once astronauts travel through the radiation belts on are their way to their next destination. The Moon missions consisted of three days of travel each way, plus a few days on the surface or in orbit. Mars missions will consist of a minimum of nine months of travel one-way. A low dose of radiation might not have noticeable effects, but when these accumulate, astronauts may run into serious medium- and long-term health problems.
You can bet that NASA and other private spaceflight companies are working hard to mitigate this risk, from nutritional supplements to counteract the effects of radiation to improving spacecraft shielding to better protect astronauts from radiation. Its important to note, though, that while were well on our way, we havent solved the space radiation problem yet.

Exclusive: Virgin Galactic Preps For Space Travel Technical Support – MRO Network

When British entrepreneur Richard Branson established Virgin Galactic in 2004, he envisioned a company that would pioneer and develop a space tourism operation, allowing passengers to experience flight in a suborbital environment 100 km (62mi.) above the Earth. This required the development and certification of a totally new type of aircraft systema suborbital spaceplaneultimately dubbed SpaceShipTwocapable of carrying two pilots and up to six passengers and launched from a specially designed, four-engine, twin-hull mother shipWhiteKnightTwoat an altitude of about 15,000 km (50,000,000 ft). Seconds after release from the mother ship, the spaceplane would then ignite its single hybrid rocket motor, ascending at up to 2,600 mph to reach its suborbital altitude. The spaceplane would shortly thereafter return to the spaceport, a specially built terminal, airfield and maintenance complex from which it was ferried by the mother ship, at a slow reentry speed, in both a powered and glide mode.
The spaceport, officially called Spaceport America, is under development in New Mexico. Upon commencement of commercial service, Virgin Galactic will relocate its headquarters and operations center there from its current location at Mojave, California.
To date, flight testing of SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo continues, as two additional SpaceShipTwos are in the early stages of production. The first production SpaceShipTwo, which was officially unveiled and rolled out on Dec. 7, 2009, was lost in a fatal accident in October 2014. A second WhiteKnightTwo is in the early design stages.
Virgin Galactic is also in the process of establishing the technical support infrastructure for the exotic aircraft. Virgin Galactics Spaceline Technical Operations Director Pedro Caballer discussed with Inside MRO contributing writer Paul Seidenman supply chain and maintenance support challenges, whichas with the flight testscontinue to be a work in progress.

Virgin Galactic is breaking new ground with respect to commercial space travel and has built a radically different spacecraft system. What were some of the maintenance support challenges?
Caballer: For maintenance support, the biggest challenge we faced was that the majority of our technical needs for supporting our spaceflight systems did not exist when the program began. That included all of the flight and technical manuals, technical training, maintenance programs, management tools, spare parts strategy and suppliers, and repair service suppliers for maintaining those spare parts.
Are the parts and components for SpaceShipTwo and the WhiteKnightTwo launch vehicle generally available off the shelf todayor is everything essentially custom-built for this operation?
Each vehicle has a slight degree of difference in its parts makeup between off-the-shelf product and custom product. For example, SpaceShipTwo is mostly custom-builtwith a ratio of about 70% that needed to be custom-built and 30% available off the shelf. For WhiteKnightTwo, about 60% of the parts are custom-built and 40% are off the shelf.
At the start of the program, what assurance did you have that the supply base could provide adequate materials support at the level you would need as your operation evolved?

To answer that question, you have to understand that The Spaceship Co., a Virgin Galactic sister organization, is our primary OEM. It is the builder of SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo and therefore had an established supply chain in place for production. However, the operational supply chain solutions for Virgin Galactic can be strategically different and were not readily in place. That was one of our challenges, and our supply chain team is tasked with developing those solutions.
Over the past several years, we have been working diligently to establish a stable supply base, although that is not complete yet. We have established a strong supplier base, mostly in areas of consumables and expendables, such as seals and filters. We are working on strengthening the rotable and repairable parts supply chain right now, and that is the final element to our supplier solution we need to put in place.
Has the supply base, in fact, expanded to the point where materials support will be readily available as needed?
Yes. We believe that the supply base will expand, especially for consumable and expendable parts. We have solutions in place for some repairables for the flight-testing phase, but we want to build a comprehensive and deep supply base solution for all repairables right at the start of our commercial operations.
Have the maintenance manuals been completed and approved yet?
The maintenance manuals for the spaceflight system are progressing well through their development. We work with multiple types of technical data sets to maintain our vehicles, much like newly designed and manufactured aircraft run through in a flight-test program.

Who is supplying the propulsion systems for SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo? Were the engines off the shelf, with some modifications, or was a totally new design required?
The Spaceship Co. has developed the rocket propulsion solution for SpaceShipTwo, and it will be our supplier and repair source for these all-new motors and propulsion components, respectively. As for WhiteKnightTwo, Pratt & Whitney Canada is supplying the engine, which is an experimental variant of the PW308A commercial turbofan.
Who supplies the avionics? As with the engines, were they off the shelf or one-offs?
We have several avionics suppliers and solution architects. The Spaceship Co. is one of them, and as they have grown a world-class avionics team, they develop and integrate quite a bit in-house, with some industry-leading avionics suppliers. Im not at liberty to disclose the names of the others, but I can tell you that they are providing off-the-shelf equipment for our vehicles currently in flight test, and those are the systems we will use in commercial operations.
Is The Spaceship Co. the entity in charge of overseeing logistics and material support?
In addition to being the OEM for our vehicles, The Spaceship Co. also is considered the component supplier to Virgin Galactic for items they have designed and manufactured as well as the provider of continual component service repair solutions.
Virgin Galactic, itself, has responsibility for supply chain oversight and support for the remainder of the components that are not manufactured by The Spaceship Co. Much like the airlines, those components will be managed within the framework of the established vehicle delivery configuration.

Are the spaceships and the launch vehicle equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostics that will monitor system maintenance status and provide real-time performance information?
We have established an extensive network of data acquisition and measurement across the entire spaceflight system. It involves a combination of real-time and recorded data that is analyzed with every flight. That data will provide the information needed to support our aircraft health and reliability management framework.
Our operation, we believe, is unique in that it involves a mix of real-time monitoring of systems inflightsimilar to a NASA control roomalong with the capability to perform post-flight data analysis to ensure that system health is appropriate. The system monitoring, in real time, is done using a telemetry architecture similar to ACARS.
When you tested the major components, what were some of the lessons learned with respect to predicted life limits? In some cases, were they better than expected?
To date, we have had positive results concerning life-limited component testing. That testing, which is carried out in-house as well as contracted to outside laboratoriesand conducted under conditions that we would see in spacehas shown us that several components already have exceeded expectations. In fact, so far no component has failed before its anticipated life limits have occurred.

How will most maintenance support be carried out? In-house? By the system OEMs?
All maintenance execution for the spaceflight system will be done in-house at Mojave, until we move to our new Spaceport America complex in New Mexico, at the start of commercial operations. This will be the base of operations for Virgin Galactic once the flight-test program is completed and we begin commercial operations. We have grown a team at Virgin Galactic that will provide technical services and execution to all our spaceline operational assets to meet schedule demands and requirements.
Will component support be under some type of time-and-material contracts with the OEMs?
Component services and repairs are being supported by the OEMs and approved third-party suppliers as we continue to evolve the support framework for the spaceflight system components. For each maintenance support solution, we are developing agreements that are tailored to ensure the success of our spaceline operation.
What further issues regarding materials support have yet to be worked out prior to the first commercial flights?
Right now, there are no major issues; but keep in mind, we are still a work in progress to establish the final supply-chain solution. Once we do that, we will successfully meet our commercial operations needs.
Has Virgin Galactic established a launch date for its first commercial flight?
No date has been advertised as to when commercial operations will begin because the current focus is on completing the flight-test program and operational readiness checks before the aircraft will be launched into service. This will include a series of verifications to assure that all work done on the project, which is driven by safety considerations, has been completed in a satisfactory manner. Any announcements of the first flight will be driven by safety considerations, not by schedule.

Weve got great news if youre in love with your phone the technological singularity will happen sometime in the next thirty years. Futurist Ray Kurzweil believes that by 2029 computers will achieve human levels of intelligence. Which is no surprise considering computers can already do things greater than humans in certain areas.
Kurzweil has a proven track record in predicting the future. It makes sense that humans will soon merge with technology but other thought leaders like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking worry that merging with technology could threaten humanity.
The question of whether or not humanity would be improved or ruined by self aware technology is an age old one. Its the subject of many feature films, think piece articles, and countless hours of research at tech companies.
The reality of the singularity will likely be rather gradual. Already were seeing technology slowly merge with daily human processes with wearable tech that tracks fitness and brain function. So if youre envisioning singularity as an oncoming wave of change you might be disappointed. Its more likely to be a gradual tide change.
Either way, itll be pretty dope to have Apple pay in your finger though, right?

The AI Singularity: Dealing With a Paradigm Shift – The Market Mogul

There is a certain level of enthusiasm associated with the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) and its ultimate destination, which is the singularity: the advancement of machine intelligence reaching the level of human beings, and most probably surpassing it.
As it is a controversial subject in the scientific community, a myriad of intellectuals have voiced their opinions on the issue of its possible benefits. However, there has also been lots of speculation regarding the apocalyptic prospects of AI from the likes of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, particularly over how this technology could possibly bring the end of humanity since there is no way of knowing how a super-intelligence devoid of emotions would think and act. There is a possibility that it might turn into a misanthrope for all we know, and from an objective perspective it wouldnt be a far-fetched stance for an entirely rational creation.
But as elusive as the concept of an AI singularity is to the minds of the scientifically inclined, the majority of the population is more interested in the pragmatic consequences of this phenomenon. This is a very legitimate concern, especially now that the prospect of integrating AI into our economy is becoming ever more pressing.
The general sentiment among policy-makers and companies is that AI can have very favourable effects on the economy. For example, Accentures report on the issue claims that AI technology can increase the productivity level of 12 advanced economies like Japan, US, Finland and Sweden by a whopping 40%, while economic growth in the US could increase from 2.6% to 4.6% (afigure that has long been stuck around the same mediocre level for a long time now).
In an era during which economic and productivity growth has levelled off and in some places started stagnating, the news of AIs considerable contribution to the ramping up of these figures may be a breath of fresh air. This revolutionary progress can allow advanced economies to gain much-needed momentum. (Below are the figures for productivity growth of some advanced economies.)
But is all this talk some kind short-sighted, narrowly focused exuberance? Could it be possible that its proponents are not thoroughly thinking about the implications of such unprecedented technology? There is a certain part of the intellectual community that thinks this to be the case. There is a very legitimate concern regarding the possible effects that AI technology could have on unemployment. The estimates range from 6-8% to 20% of the workforce becoming unemployable subsequent to the adoption of AI in a given economy.
There are those who regard the AI era to be very much akin to the Industrial Revolution, making references to its consequences for job creation. However, this comparison remains simplistic when stood up against the pervasiveness and advanced capabilities of AI technology. AI is not only able to automate low-level, low-skill work, but also poses a very significant threat to jobs in the nature of information processing activities like decision-making, reporting, communicating and coordinating, fact-gathering, and the supervision of similar activities by subordinates.
Just this year, for example. a Japanese insurance company replaced 34 of its employees with AI. What is under threat of replacement by automation wasnt only blue collar positions but jobs like insurance, banking, law, translation and even farming.
An optimistic counter-argument against this could be the claim that the integration of AI into the economy would be in the form of capital-labour augmentation instead of absolute replacement. Though this view too has raised some controversy, particularly with the hypothesis that whatever people can do, AI can do just as well if not better.
So where is the incentive to not replace humans with machines entirely? This view becomes even more relevant with the prospect of the AI singularity. It could eventually reach a point at which there would be no need for high-maintenance, petulant humans involved in the workplace.
Now with this possibility hanging over humanitys heads, it becomes important to assess the social implications of integrating AI into the economy. It poses a very tangible threat of a total shakedown to the values and structures of many communities. It might very well force people to re-establish their relationship with the concept of work, which for many is self-defining.
Would people be content with that identity taken away from them and their most basic societal values altered by this new technology? It might be too imprudent to assume that the adoption of the AI technology will be a smooth and painless one, as it might even create 21st-centuryLuddites that violently oppose and reject it.
Another aspect that could become challenging is the political implications of adopting AI. For some, the fundamental problem for the future will not be the creation or maintenance of jobs, but the distribution of wealth created through AIs replacement of human beings in the workplace. Will the universal basic income be the norm in the future?
How this case of income distribution will unfold is a matter of intense concern because it may very well be the differentiating factor between an extremely unfair and divided society versus a society that prospers tremendously with afair distribution of wealth. But this type of a system would surely create more dependence on the government for maintaining income equality, whose promise of success looks sombre judging by past and current experiences.
With all these economic, societal and political implications in mind, perhaps it is time to slow down and for the first time look beyond the immediate economics benefits of what is being done with AI, for it may well be the most significant paradigm shift in the modern history of humanity.
