Market Review: Indicator Watch for Nanotech Security Corp (NTS.V) – Sherwood Daily
Posted: April 30, 2017 at 10:38 pm
Investors may be tracking certain levels on shares of Nanotech Security Corp (NTS.V). The current 50-day Moving Average is 1.27, the 200-day Moving Average is 1.24, and the 7-day is noted at 1.31. Moving averages can help spot trends and price reversals. They may also be used to help find support or resistance levels. Moving averages are considered to be lagging indicators meaning that they confirm trends. A certain stock may be considered to be on an uptrend if trading above a moving average and the average is sloping upward. On the other side, a stock may be considered to be in a downtrend if trading below the moving average and sloping downward.
Traders may be relying in part on technical stock analysis. Nanotech Security Corp (NTS.V) currently has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of -209.95. Despite the name, CCI can be used on other investment tools such as stocks. The CCI was designed to typically stay within the reading of -100 to +100. Traders may use the indicator to determine stock trends or to identify overbought/oversold conditions. A CCI reading above +100 would imply that the stock is overbought and possibly ready for a correction. On the other hand, a reading of -100 would imply that the stock is oversold and possibly set for a rally. At the time of writing, the 14-day ADX for Nanotech Security Corp (NTS.V) is 26.74. Many technical chart analysts believe that an ADX value over 25 would suggest a strong trend. A reading under 20 would indicate no trend, and a reading from 20-25 would suggest that there is no clear trend signal. The ADX is typically plotted along with two other directional movement indicator lines, the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI). Some analysts believe that the ADX is one of the best trend strength indicators available.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is one of multiple popular technical indicators created by J. Welles Wilder. Wilder introduced RSI in his book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems which was published in 1978. RSI measures the magnitude and velocity of directional price movements. The data is represented graphically by fluctuating between a value of 0 and 100. The indicator is computed by using the average losses and gains of a stock over a certain time period. RSI can be used to help spot overbought or oversold conditions. An RSI reading over 70 would be considered overbought, and a reading under 30 would indicate oversold conditions. A level of 50 would indicate neutral market momentum. The 14-day RSI is currently sitting at 35.12, the 7-day is at 24.53, and the 3-day is spotted at 9.52.

Russia’s WW3 plan: Putin’s subs planting deep-sea nukes to unleash Tsunami on US – Daily Star
Posted: at 10:37 pm
A RUSSIAN military expert has claimed Putins subs are burying nuclear missiles near the US to unleash a huge tsunami when WW3 comes.
Viktor Baranetz, a retired army colonel and former spokesman for the Defense Ministry, claimed Russia had already started planting mole missiles on the east coast of the US.
The missiles are capable of digging themselves in and sleeping until given the command to detonate.
The nukes are aligned in a chain to create a massive tsunami when detonated capable of overwhelming cities along the American coast.
If the claims are true, cities such as New York, Boston and Miami would be sitting ducks in the event of such an attack.

The Americans are deploying their tanks, airplanes and special forces battalions along the Russian border, Baranetz said.
And we are quietly seeding the U.S. shoreline with nuclear mole missiles.
Baranetz made the shock claims in an interview with Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda and believes the tactic is intended to put Donald Trump on the back foot in the event of war breaking out.
The U.S. is the permanent world champion in the size of its military budget almost $600 billion (500 million), which is 10 times more than Russias, he explained.

Baranetz said while the Russian government couldnt hope to compete in terms of budget, it was employing other devious measures to get the better of Donald Trump.
Former head of the Russian Army, Yuri Baluyevsky, also said there are plans in place to compensate for Russias lack of firepower.
Russia will not compete with the U.S. in defense expenditure. We are in a different weight class, he said.
Over the years, a number of high profile critics of the Kremlin have died in mysterious circumstances, including Alexander Litvenenko, who was famously poisoned with the radioactive compound Polonium-210

For us, the main question is how to ensure Russias defense at a lower cost.
I am sure that we have already found asymmetrical responses. I dont see a big problem here.
Fears of WW3 are at an all-time high with Donald Trumps armada of ships led by the USS Carl Vinson steaming towards war with Kim Jong-un.
Both North Korea and the US have carried out enormous drills as war seems inevitable on the Korean peninsula.

RUSSIA have started test-driving a gigantic, state-of-the-art robot tank as Word War Three tensions rise.
The monster machine - called The Vikhr is one of the world's biggest unmanned military robots and boasts a whole host of sophisticated gear
Footage filmed in a classified location in Russia shows The Vikhr face a range of tasks and absolutely smash them.
The gigantic 22ft-long tank operated by a man sitting at a laptop with a joystick rolls up and down hills, through grass, mud and several feet of water with absolute ease.
The Vikhr then shows off its full force by firing several rounds from its 30mm automatic gun before launching several missiles into the distance.

Other weapons available include a flamethrower and six anti-tank guided missiles.
Russia's new tank can hit speeds of up to 37mph on dry land and 6.2mph through water
The coutnry is currently the third biggest military spender in the world, according to global security resource organisation SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute).
President Vladimir Putin spent over $69.2 billion (53.4b) on the military last year, leaving them hot on the heels of the US and China.

World War Three looks ever closer after North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un attempted to yet another missile test, leading US President Trump to send warship USS Carl Vinson into North Korean waters.
Kim Jong-Un responded by releasing a chilling video vowing to obliterate Carl Vinson.
China launched a huge, new warship on Wednesday (April 26) as streamers and champagne were used to christen it.
US President Donald Trump then admitted a "major, major conflict" is on the cards before deploying troops to the Syria-Turkey border last night.

North Korea: Kim Jong-un suffers ANOTHER missile failure amid growing WW3 fears – Daily Star
Posted: at 10:37 pm
KIM Jong-un has suffered another missile embarrassment amid fears of imminent war with the US on the Korean peninsula.
Yonhap news agency reported that the North Korean military had carried out a test-firing of a ballistic missile early on Saturday morning.
But a US government source claimed that the test-firing had been unsuccesful, and President Trump had been briefed.
The missile is believed to have blown up a few seconds after take off on the peninsula.

US officials said they had been tracking the missile from 4.30pm this afternoon and were still waiting to determine the exact type, but it is believed to be a medium-range ballistic.
A Pacific Command spokesman said: "The North American Aeropace Command determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America."
The news comes as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un promised "weekly" missile launches in the wake of his spectacular failed test last week.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had previously warned the United Nations failure to curb North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to "catastrophic consequences".

Donald Trump said a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was on the horizon if it failed to hold back on further missile tests.
Kim also staged North Korea's "biggest military drills ever" this week as massed artillery conducted live firing drills in a chilling message to Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, the US staged their own exercises on the tubby tyrant's border with over 5,000 American and South Korean troops taking part.

The US President has also sent an "armada" to the Korean peninsula which is just days away.
In another, seemingly inflammatory move, they combined with Japan's air force on Friday in a further show of force.
The firing happened in an area to the north of Pyongyang, North Korea's capital.

WW3 fears: North Korea goads US with BRUTAL ‘Jellyfish’ jibe as fears of total war grow – Daily Star

The startling slapdown was made as Donald Trump moves in his big guns to confront the tubby tyrant.

Trump's ground troops in South Korea have also done their fair share of muscle-flexing.

Five thousand US and South Korean soldiers staged military exercises on Kim's border on Wednesday.
But North Korea released a petulant message of defiance in the face of US aggression.
Such threat may startle a jellyfish, but can never work on the DPRK. The US had better recognise this," the newspaper read.

It is no more than a bluff that the US gets busy deploying nuclear carrier task forces under the eyes of the nuclear power in the East.
Fears of nuclear war are at an all-time high with the American-built THAAD missile system nearing deployment in South Korea.
On top of this, Kim Jong-un has promised weekly missile tests after the spectacular failure of his nuke launches last week.

The newspaper article said the US was trying to intimidate North Korea into freezing its nuclear war programme but vowed to continue anyway.
It would be a fatal mistake of the US to think it can browbeat the DPRK with such nuclear carrier," it continued.
It is a wicked design of the U.S. to shake the DPRK's will for increased nuclear deterrent through intensive military threat and blackmail.

The Support Groups That Help People Process Psychedelic Trips – VICE
Posted: at 10:36 pm
"How do you come back from a trip?" asks Sherree Godasi, perched on a round cushion in the back room of a Santa Monica boutique that smells of incense and is covered with Tibetan prayer flags and portraits of Buddha. "One way I love integrating is swimming."
It's a Monday night and there's about ten of us sitting on floor pillows in a circle around Godasi, who is from Israel and wears her long auburn hair in two tight French braids. Godasi is what'sknown as a psychedelic integration coach, and the bi-monthly, donation-based meetings she leads are intended to provide support and guidance after a psychedelic trip induced by hallucinogenic substances. The aim, she says, is to offer a space for thoughtful integrationor the mental processing of a psychedelic experience long after the effects of a drug have worn off. It's an aspect of psychedelic experimentation that's often overlooked in mainstream culture, but that devotees say is equally asimportant (if not more important)than the trip itself.
The concept of integration has been around in some form or another for nearly as long as people have been seeking enlightenment throughmind-altering substances.Modern enthusiasts trace the practice back hundreds of years to Amazonian as well as Native American tribes who took psychedelics in ceremonial settings in search of enlightenment. But in Western medicine, it wasn't until the 1960s that integration became a tenet of the psychedelic therapy movement, pioneered by radical California psychologists like Leo Zeff, a Jungian therapist who saw psychedelics as a tool for self-improvement, and James Fadiman, who co-founded the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto in 1975.
But onlyrecently have coaches, therapists, and healers begun to advertise these services more widely and to the general public. Godasi is one of just a handful of psychedelic integration coaches that openly practices in Los Angeles, but groups like hers have started forming in cities across the country. The rise of so-called integration circles coincides with what many practitioners are calling a psychedelic renaissance, signaled by a new wave of academic research into the possible medicinal benefits of substances like psilocybin (the psychoactive ingredient in mushrooms) and MDMA.Godasi and those who seek her services hope that these above ground meetings will help legitimize psychedelics as real forms of medicine and therapy, rather than just party drugs.
"The field is so new and it's so needed because everyone knows people who drop acid or who roll on mollyright, most of us doand these people are experimenting with in fact what are considered extremely powerful substances and medicine," Godasi told me in a phone interview. "Why is there a medical system to assist people who take Advil or overdose on sleeping pills, but not oneto help someone who felt like they met their own god or became completely in love with their friend while taking MDMA?"
If Godasi today considers herself something of an expert on psychedelics, then it was only recently that she was still taking substances "kind of mindlessly," she says. Then an experience at Coachella three years ago shifted her whole point of view. "I took a huge dose of MDMA that completely changed my life and it was hard to get back into this world, you know, with everything that I understand now," she recalls. "All of the new and incredible universal knowledge and downloads that I received and understandings about the nature of humanity" left her crying the whole drive home, she says. But she had no idea what to make of this experience or how to integrate it into her everyday life.
It wasn't until the following year that she discovered integration during a psychedelic conference in LAcalledVisionary Convergence. The idea behind it, presented in a lecture by Berkeley-based clinical psychologist Susana Bustos, immediately clicked with Godasi. But when she and her friend Ashley Booththe founder of the LA-based psychedelic advocacy group Aware Projectnoticed there were few places in the city that offered integration support, they launched their own last year. The result is an organization called InnerSpace Integration, which laid the groundwork for Godasi's integration circles (she has since branched off and now leads them under her own independent brand).
"Because of prohibition, people don't have the kind of support and education to be able to make good decisions about usage," says Booth, who adds that those who go on ayahuasca retreats in Peru, for example, where it's legal, sometimes arrive home to find there's nobody else to talk about their experiences with. "We really would like to create these sort of gathering spaces for people to be able to continue to talk about their experience and how their integration process is unfolding," she says.
Most psychedelics are still Schedule I drugs, with LSD, MDMA, and Psilocybin listed in the same category for abuse as heroin.Which is why Godassi begins every integration circle with a legal disclaimer: She is in no way encouraging anyone to procure or ingest illegal substances. She also instructs the group to avoid naming any medicine providersa preferred term in this community for what others might think of as drug dealersor disclosing the locations where we may have taken hallucinogenic substances like ayahuasca, which in the United States is often administered illegally during group ceremonies in private homes or other underground venues. There's always a chance there could be undercover cops in the room, Godassi says, before alerting everyone to my presence as a journalist. (The members of the group have asked to remain anonymous in this article, many citing potential professional repercussions as a result of their use of psychedelics).
The integration circle is mostly self-directed, and Godasi says she prefers to sit back and observe rather than guiding the conversation. (She also leads one-on-one sessions that tend to be more intensive.) But getting the group to talk isn't always easy, and even though everyone is presumably here to get something off their chests, the room is frequently punctuated by awkward silences. Godasi scans the room, making eye contact and gently posing open-ended questions to find out who recently had a psychedelic experience they're struggling to make sense of. Once the group finally does start to open up, their anecdotes are sometimes prefaced with notes of caution that they've never told it to anyone before. When one person says he no longer relates to his friends after having done ayahuasca, Godasi jumps in with supportive questions intended to provoke dialgoue. "Our entire life revolves around relationships," she says. "So how do you come back and talk to people?" Think of the experience, she says, as"an invitation to reassess where you are."
"James," a50-year-old IT recruiter who asked me not to use his realname,is one of the group's more regular members. He says he experimented with psychedelics recreationally when he was in his teens and 20s, but after getting hooked on methamphetamines, he quit drugs altogether and got sober. "I moved away from the area I was in, I just changed my life and led a suburban life for 20 years," he says. "And a couple years ago my life got shaken up and I started looking for myself again."
That's when he turned to psychedelicsand this time he wasn't just looking to get high. He'd been seeing a psychotherapist for a while, he says, but it wasn't until he started tripping on ayahuasca and DMT that he started to have a breakthrough about who he really was and how to be himselfespecially at work, where he felt like he was always pretending to be a more likable, corporate version of himself. "That process of becoming more at ease with myself, becoming less inhibited, being more comfortable with my own skin, all of those things have been helped immensely by psychedelics," he says, cautioning that while his own experiences have been positive, psychedelics aren't for everybody, nor does he advocate that they'll help anyone else in the same way. "That's where the practice of integration comes in because you learn things about yourself but you have to figure out what those things mean to you and how to integrate them into your life."
But it's not as if he can tell his colleagues and clients about the time he hallucinated that humanoids told him the meaning of life during a DMT trip. Those are the kinds of stories he saves for Godasi's integration circle, where it's not uncommon to hear from people who say they spoke to God, saw the afterlife, or communicated with the spirits of deceased loved ones during a psychedelic trip. These are the types of anecdotes that Godasi says could get a person diagnosed with psychosis or mania if they were to tell a doctor or a therapist about theminstead, she says, most people choose to keep quiet. Others, like James, seek out an integration coach.
As the 90minute integration circle comes to a close, Godasi presses her palms together in prayer and bows her head down, thanking us all for coming and for sharing our experiences. Most of us just met each other tonight, but nobody is ready to leave yet. We all stand in a circle making small talk, and James asks another member of the group where her accent is from. She says she believes she may have inherited it from a past life. Then, as well all linger in the room, she says she can feel that maybe our spirits have exited our bodies and are now communicating telepathically with one another. Everyone staresat each other in silence.

Ramping up your brain power – Marianas Variety

01 May 2017
IN the course of my medical research I came upon a whole new class of brain-boosting compounds, called Nootropics. Some of them are only available by prescription (such as Provigil / Modafinil and Ritalin).
However, there is a broad spectrum of brain-boosters which, because they are classified as dietary supplements, need no prescription. These include Alpha Brain (highly touted), Brain Force, and Focus Factor. Each of these supplements was created by scientists who were also physicians.
I gave Brain Force to my friend (who has mild dementia) along with a fairly unknown nutrient, Vinpocetine (similar to Ginkgo Biloba, but more powerful). I also gave her GABA, which increases the efficiency of neurotransmitters in the brain hence better cognitive function. They all helped her to focus in her daily activities; they also improved her memory.
There is another dietary supplement which is worthy of note. It is called Phenibut. It is available either as a powder (you put a little scoop of this stuff under your tongue) or in capsule form. The standard dose is approximately 500mg, and is widely available on the internet again, without a prescription.
It was developed in the 1960s by Russian scientists to give a boost to Russian cosmonauts so that they would have less anxiety, be more social, and then sleep beautifully at the end of the day.
I also became intrigued with Provigil / Modafinil and watched many YouTube videos made by people who were taking it. Although originally developed as a treatment for narcolepsy (suddenly falling asleep), it has a hyper-alert effect on the user.
Many users of Modafinil claimed that they were much more productive, and that this drug made them feel more like themselves. It is especially useful for people who have to work long hours and stay focused.
For example, I know a person who uses Modafinil to help him work the overnight shift. As a result, this person is wide awake and highly functional. And, when he goes home at 8 a.m., he is able to go to sleep because the drug wears off after 8 hours.
Your doctor can prescribe Provigil / Modafinil if you have trouble staying awake, or merely want to sharpen your brain function. I spoke with a local pharmacist, and the cost for the prescription is around $80 for a 30-day supply. It is cheaper on the internet, since some prescription drugs can be extremely costly in the commonwealth.
This reminds me. Although the U.S. Congress has passed legislation to prevent U.S. citizens from ordering pharmaceuticals from Canada, the law has not gone into effect, so you can still do this legally.
Buying pharmaceuticals from Canada is a life-saver and extremely cost effective. You know about Viagra it was developed to help improve blood flow; but its other benefits took the spotlight. I found 50mg to be very helpful to me, because I had a heart attack a couple of years ago and Viagra helps to keep my blood pressure within the normal range.
However, one 50mg tablet on Saipan costs $48. In Canada, the Pfizer-made drug costs about $8, or even less on some web sites. The Canadian pharmacies require a prescription and most doctors in the commonwealth will send one for you.
This is especially appealing to those of us who do not have insurance to cover the costs of prescription drugs.
In the meantime, consult your physician and do some research, especially on some of the nootropics I mentioned. If you need a mental boost, there are many great products available.

Soon he had gained all the experience necessary when it came to employing the latest production techniques, something he is now famed for. His hard work turned fruitful when he was seventeen as he entered for two major Hungarian remix competitions and as a result Sunny Lax the artist was born on the progressional circuit through the publishing of these mixes.
His first success came in the year of 2005 after he sent his new track PUMA to one of the most famous dance labels Anjunabeats. The trio that are Above & Beyond were so taken back by his demo that they play the record for weeks on end (and didnt waste any time signing him up). As a result his first EP was released (which consisted of both PUMA and Cassiopeia) and within a short time everyone that mattered was in full support, including the worlds No. 1 DJ Armin van Buuren who made PUMA the Record Of The Week (and liked it so much it featured on Armins legendary ASOT Yearmix Album for 2005).
Driven by the success of these records Levente soon started receiving remix requests from almost every major label in the dance music scene, averaging almost a mix a month. In addition his sets have featured on major radio networks, and he has been asked to play at many key clubs around the world. But most importantly, and the thing that has continued to drive him, has been the overwhelming support from his fans, and for Levente this is what makes it all worthwhile.
In the past years he created trance anthems like Blue bird, Reborn, Miqu and Misgrey, and continued to work with key labels such as Anjunabeats, Mondo, AVA Recordings and Deep Blue. At the same time he has continued to remix for all the biggest labels, and for leading artists in the scene such Above & Beyond, Super8 & Tab, Darren Tate, Lange, Daniel Kandi and Nitrous Oxide.
Recently Levente has been busier than ever. He has defined the uplifting end of Anjunabeats output in recent years with releases like Karma, Daenerys, Melba or the beatport topper Enceladus. In may 2015 he has reached new highs in his DJ career with his first US North tour, teamed up with Genix. Theyve conquered seven cities from New York to San Fransisco with their fresh collaboration making many fans happy and reaching more new fans. After the successful tour he had the chance to open the legendary Dreamstate festival in front of 10 thousand people.
And the best is yet to come

13 Best Cyberpunk Movies Of All Time | Screen Rant
Posted: at 10:33 pm
Cyberpunk is science fiction, often set in a dystopian future, in which society is dominated, for better or worse, by computers and the internet. Rather than direct government overlords, society-at-large is usually controlled by mega-corporations who skew the balance of power away from the poor and needy, fueling tensions and inspiring revolution. The people are represented by radical groups using their soldiers or hackers to shock the system. The internet is used as a great equalizer, a weapon ofthe oppressed to even the playing field against their tormentors. Then again, the danger of computers taking over society and our daily lives is often a themein the genre.
Aesthetically, Cyberpunk often borrows from the film-noir detective genre, but with vivid splashes of electronic neons and proliferation of wildly sci-fi technologies. Cybernetically-enhanced humans coexistwith their unaugmented brethren, but a looming sense of foreboding hangs above everyone; a Cyberpunk world, if not already in full-scale urban warfare, is always on the brink of one revolution or another. Finally, Cyberpunk is empowering to outcasts, misfits, minorities, and other people who are so often characterized as less than.In Cyberpunk, anyone can be powerful, as long as their computer softwareis up to date.
The genre started out in literature, with stories by such visionary authors as William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and Neal Stephenson, among so many others. Eventually the movementmade its way onto the big screen. For this list, were going to take a look at some films which not only co-opted Cyberpunks aesthetics, but also did justice to its most prominent themes and ideas. Heres Screen Rants take on the13 BestCyberpunk Movies Of All Time.
Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie starred in Hackers, a gorgeous techno-pop Cyberpunk film directed by Iain Softley (K-Pax, Inkheart). The film came and went at the box office, but became a cult classic for its depiction of the image of computer hackers as akin to Wild West heroes, saving helpless people from evil corporations, as well as its striking visualization of hacking itself. The films depiction of hacking isntremotely scientifically accurate, by any stretch of the imagination, but it works excellently within the movie, which remains true to the spirit of the early hacker subculture.
The film is also notable for its techno soundtrack, which utterly dominated the club scene of the mid 1990s. In Hollywood, computer nerds are still depicted as homely and greasy losers who live in their parents basement and lack basic social skills. Hackers made computer nerds cool and trendy, and directly quoting The Hackers Manifesto, stated that a hacker exists without skin color, without nationality, and without religious bias. It also helped that theyre played by Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie, two of the hottest people on the planet.
The films of David Cronenberg almost always take great pride in their ability to disturb the audience by making them see the undeniable humanity within their absurd premises and graphic imagery. Videodrome is no different. Released in 1983, before the Cyberpunk craze really began to took off, it functions as something of a pre-Cyberpunk film. Instead of internet and computers, peoples lives revolve around and are dominated by trashy television.
James Woods plays an executive of a low-rent TVstation who discovers a mysterious foreign program which consists of nothing but obscene torture-porn violence like Saw, but without the soap opera storyline. The film goes wildly off the rails in surreal and imaginative ways, all leading up to an explosive and esoteric finale. Videodrome lays bare our cultural lust for sex and violence, and many would say that the film successfully predicted that real-life would essentially be replaced with TV screens.
Some aspects of the film are notably dated, such as the hilarious use of a Betamax tape in a crucial (and disgusting) scene, but Videodrome is so wildly audacious that the anachronisms to todays world only enhance the films aesthetic, and hammer home the theme of the movie: that television, and by extension, all media, can be a dangerous tool, capable of being used to control people.
Strange Days came out in 1995, the same year as Hackers. Like Hackers, it bombed at the box office, only to become a cult hit as the years went by. Written by James Cameron and directed by Katheryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker), Strange Days tells the story of jaded ex-cop Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes), who sells and is addicted to the drug, SQUID, which allows users to live through other peoples experiences down to the last vivid detail.
Set in the near future, 1999 (natch), Strange Days deals with traditional film noir themes through the filter of a slightly fantastical version of the real world. Its very much a Cyberpunk film, but is set in a world not too far off fromour own, compared to some of the other films on this list.
The Matrix is1999s most acclaimed action movie, and possibly its most influential.Matrix-Mania gripped Hollywood after the film became an unexpected breakout hit. In a career defining role, Keanu Reeves plays Thomas Anderson, who, as a hacker, identifies as Neo. Hediscovers that reality as we know it is a mereillusion, a simulation made to keep humanity docile while machine overlords grow and consume us, not unlike wheat or corn.
Within The Matrix, Neo and other members of The Resistance can defy the laws of physics and hack skillsets and abilities into their repertoire. Thomas Anderson was just an office drone, but upon his awakening, after peeling back the curtain on the facade of reality, he becomes The One, who works tirelessly to liberate mankind from their ignorant sleep.
The Matrix spawned two sequels which arguably pushed the first films themes too far into the realm of esoteric nonsense, which is a matter of great debate among film geeks. Without choosing sides regarding Reloaded and Revolutions, we can all agree that The Matrix is a Cyberpunk masterpiece of style, action, and storytelling.
Before there was a name for Cyberpunk, there were lots of science fiction authors whose work would be retroactively recognized as forerunners to the movement. Philip K. Dick is the most well-known of these writers, and many of his novels and short stories have been adapted for the screen: Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, and a great many others have been interpreted by Hollywood, to varying degrees of success. But one which we particularly adore, for so many different reasons, is Paul Verhoevens sci-fi odyssey, Total Recall, which was based on Dicksshort story, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this 1990 film, which some people view as little more than a brainless actioner because of its copious amounts of blood, bullets, and Sharon Stone fistfights. However, for those willing to take a closer look, theres a looming fear that all is not as it seems; at the films outset, hardworking everyman Douglas Quaid (Arnold) pays for an Ego Trip, false implanted memories to let people remember experiences theyve never had.Almost immediately, all hell breaks loose, and the viewer has to decide if Quaid is really on the adventure of a lifetime, of if hes just vegetating like anyone else on an Ego Trip.
What is real? What is illusion? Whats the difference?
Back to the deeply disturbing and unsettling works of David Cronenberg, we arrive at eXistenZ, which is regarded by many to be the spiritual successor to this lists other Cronenberg film, Videodrome, but somehow even weirder and more discomforting.Instead of television, eXistenZ tackles virtual reality videogames; like television, they can consume people and overtake their lives, but, when it comes to virtual reality, it can become nearly impossible to determine what is real and what is fake, with layers upon layers of non-reality stacking up to the point where, in true Cyberpunk fashion, theres no difference between reality and illusion if nobody can actually tell them apart.
Of course, the virtual reality gaming scene is only in its infancy today, and it remains to be seen if projects like Oculus Rift and Playstation VR will be able to truly break through into the mainstream. If they do, however, Cronenberg just might have the last laugh, even if we suppose hell be none too happy about foretelling the end of society as we know it.
Terry Gilliam is one of the most beloved, yet commercially under-appreciated, directors of all time. Very few of his films ever managed to break out at the box office, and his productions have often been undermined by factors outside of his control, like the death of Heath Ledger during the shoot for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and the myriad of factors which have kept his Don Quixote film from making any meaningful progress for the better part of two decades, though that may be changing if his current plan to start shooting before the end of 2016 comes to fruition
Gilliams most overt science fiction trilogy started with Brazil and 12 Monkeys, two excellent films (but only the Directors Cut of Brazil), and concluded with The Zero Theorem, a moviewhich heightens the themes of his previous films (especially Brazil), and ratchets up the incomprehensibility to confusing, but still highly-enjoyable levels. The Zero Theorem tells the story of a man (Christoph Waltz) tasked with solving the titular math problem, while trying, in vain, to retain his sanity as his life becomes increasingly dominated by digital technology. Its weird, even by Gilliams standards, but its also a striking and thought-provoking film which everybody should see. Right now. Go!
For director Paul Verhoevens second appearance on this list, we look to 1987s Robocop, which, like Total Recall, is another intelligent film which is ostensibly about a killing machine with a big gun. In the case of Robocop, he literally is a machine, a good cop, Murphy, resurrected as a cyborg crime-fighter with nigh-indestructible armor plating. Set in a satirical black comedy version of the United States, Robocop made clever use of in-universe news broadcasts to relay the state of the awful-yet-familiar world of the film. Robocops version of Detroit, the main setting of the movie, is practically run by OCP, Omni Consumer Products, and Murphys predicament, of having a degree of consciousness within a robot body and being unable to control his actions as a corporate product, are among the films more overtlyCyberpunk themes.
Robocops dire settingbecame even more indicting when the actual city of Detroit filed for bankruptcy in 2013, leading to the increasing privatization of its police force and other departments, much like OCPs plans in Robocops sequels. Awkward.
The world of Akira is one of the most fully realized Cyberpunk settings out there, with biker gangs, a gritty and perpetually overcast urban center, and openly anti-government terrorist groups juxtaposed with wildly science-fiction elements like human experiments into psychic powers, along with copious amounts of R-rated sci-fi violence. Many children of the early 90s were scarred when an unwitting parent picked this up at Blockbuster thinking it just another cartoon. After all, if its animated, then its for kids, right?
First released as a manga in 1982, the story was loosely adapted into the anime classic which totally eclipsed the popularity of its source material. For decades, a live-action version of the story has languished in development hell; depending on how the Ghost in the Shell film turns out (more on that in a bit), we are bracing ourselves for its inevitable resurgence.
Tron is definitely a Cyberpunk film, with its stunning (for the time) special effects which conveyed the idea of a computer as a world inhabited by programs. However, the distant sequel, 2010s Tron: Legacy, really runs with the Cyberpunk themes, to excellent effect.
Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, the rock star programmer who is locked away within his computer world for twenty years before being discovered by his son, Sam. Flynns major discovery is computer life. Despite literally being God of The Grid, Kevin Flynn hadnt anticipated the development of the ISOs. Not merely programs, or even artificial intelligence, these unforeseen entities are legitimate digital life.
Then, of course, theres the aesthetic, which takes the original films legendary blue lines, mixes in a little bit of Blade Runners techno-city, and includes Michael Sheen as a Ziggy Stardust-esque nightclub owner. Tron: Legacy is often dismissed as not having a story, but we disagree; its all there, multi-layered and rich in themes, but, like Total Recall, it never spells things out, demanding that the viewer seek out the films messages for themselves.
Before The Matrix, there was Ghost in the Shell. This 1995 anime film (based on the manga series, which debuted in 1989) is often calledpost-Cyberpunk, in that artificial cyborg bodies are so commonplace, they are considered the norm. Their faint remnant of humanity, the soul within them, is referred to as their ghost. In the future, humans are out, and nearly 100% synthetics are in. Major Motoko Kusanagi is the leader of an elite squad tasked to fight techno-crime, which leads her down a rabbit hole of existentialism and mind control.
Ghost in the Shell is iconic for being (after Akira) another huge step for anime into the mainstream culture ofthe West. The film was highly influenced by Blade Runner, and in turn, served as a keyinspiration for The Matrix. For better or worse, GitSis getting a big-budget Hollywood adaptation, to be directed by Rubert Sanders and starring Scarlett Johansson, who is decidedly lacking in Japanese heritage.
Pierce Brosnan plays a gifted scientist working on a project to enhance intelligence when he comes across Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey), a mentally challenged young man who lives under the watchful eye of a seriously creepy sadistic priest. Despite the dubious ethics, Professor 007 conducts his Virtual Reality experiments on young Jobe and quickly enhances his intelligence. However, the project was initially intended to create weapons, and Jobes newfound power quickly leads to disaster.
The Lawnmower Man is notable for its then-impressive CGI effects, which impressed 1992 audiences, but are painfully dated by 2016 standards. Still, the films numerous scenes set within Virtual Reality, rendered entirely using computer graphics, still hold up due to their dramatic impact, if not for their visual fidelity.
There is a sequel, but it is awful and should never be watched by anyone, ever. The film also inspired a video game for Super Nintendo, which, against all odds, is way better than it sounds.
Of course, there was no other choice for the top spot; of courseBlade Runneris the number one pick on this list. Ridley Scotts 1982 magnum opus is a science-fiction masterpiece about what makes us human or artificial, and whether or not theres any difference between the two to begin with.Harrison Ford plays the neo-noir detective, a Blade Runner, tasked with hunting down Replicants, artificial humans. Drama ensues.
Based on the Philip K. Dick novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner is credited for establishing the Cyberpunk aesthetic on film, a dark and sun-deprived cityscape with entire buildings co-opted by animated consumer billboards.
The films theatrical release was followed by a Directors Cut in 1992, but the definitive version of the film came in 2007, with The Final Cut, which is readily available on Blu Ray. A long-awaited sequel, produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Denis Villenueve (Sicario, Prisoners), is in development. Blade Runner 2 will star Ryan Gosling alongside Harrison Ford, and is currently on target for an October 2017 release date.
