Using psychedelics to treat mental illness – The University News
Posted: April 12, 2017 at 8:51 am
Depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, Alzheimers, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder: these diseases are among the most debilitating maladies known to man. You may think that everything that could be done to curb the effects of these diseases has been tried, but not quite. The most radical treatments are the ones that the federal government have deemed too harmful and without any justified medical use. What if the feds got it wrong?
Thats what many outspoken researchers in psychiatry ask. In fact, there are whole organizations dedicated to the radical new studies of psychedelics in therapy. Te Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, is perhaps the largest. MAPS conducts research in MDMA and LSD-assisted psychotherapies. They also conduct research using two psychedelics you have likely never heard of before: Ibogaine and Ayahuasca. Studies like these can only serve to help us better understand the effects of these drugs.
Arguably the most dangerous part of psychedelics is our lack of understanding. Most of what we can publicly access are stories of Erowid (a popular online illicit drug forum) users. Right now, there is no clinically accepted procedure in treating patients experiencing a badtrip. As a whole, the medical community lacks knowledge about how the effects of psychedelics manifest. There currently exists no indicators relating demographics to effects of psychedelics. And this is problematic, especially for psychotherapists who cant gauge a patients likely reaction to a psychedelic substance. Pharmacological knowledgethat is, how drugs work chemicallyis also lacking in comparison to mainstream prescription drugs and most illicit substances.
Ingesting psilocybin is said to be a transformative and religious experience. Many describe the experience as creating more connections in their mind, and this description mirrors the activity that is actually occurring in the brain. In brain scans conducted while individuals are tripping, there is a significantly higher desegregation of brain activity than normal.
In research conducted at Johns Hopkins University, psilocybin exposure resulting in mystical experiences was correlated with a reduction in addiction to tobacco. The results are similar for alcoholism, depression and anxiety as well. Of 51 cancer patients suffering from end-of-life depression, 80 percent reported feeling less afraid of death after exposure to psilocybin. There have also been significant results in early testing of other psychedelics as novel antidepressants, cures for obsessive-compulsive disorder, cures for post-traumatic stress disorder and even as a cure for cocaine dependency. Even crazier is the research that suggests people feel they have more meaning and spiritual purpose in their life after only a single moderatedose of psilocybin. This pairs well with the research that found psychedelic use to be associated with lower rates of suicidality. For all of these reasons, parts of the medical community are calling psychedelic drugs a paradigm shift in the way we treat mental illness.
I talked to a few students on campus about their experience with magic mushrooms. The individuals will remain anonymous. One described the experience as giving him a clear head, but with a confused sense of reality. He experienced warmth, euphoria and mild visual hallucination. Another had a much worse experience; she remembers trying to claw the skin off of her face. And lastly, one gave me advice if I ever tried psilocybin: When you peak, you gotta smoke weed man. It makes it so much better, trust me. You gotta plan the whole thing out. He also admitted to trying LSD multiple times.
Clearly, more research is needed to understand the effects and possible medicinal uses of psychedelics. Unfortunately, their Schedule I ranking makes their use in research much less accessible. The research that does exist comes only from private donors or the government. Because of the age of the drugs, they cant be patented and therefore draw no interest from pharmaceutical companies.
Schedule I drugs allegedly have no medicinal use, but there is now strong evidence to refute that. Mental illness is a public health crisis. Veteran suicide rates are immense. Homelessness is being linked to mental health at an alarming rate. At what point do we start trying the cutting edge?

What Will Make Man Smarter? – Yahoo Finance – Yahoo Finance
Posted: at 8:50 am
- By Nicholas Kitonyi
The word "smart" has become a mainstay in every culture across the globe due to the increased use of smart devices. Yet the biggest challenge is making sure that man can keep up with the advances in technology. Are you afraid of AI?
This popular abbreviation for artificial intelligence has sparked several controversies and debates regarding whether there should be limitations. But is setting limitations admitting that human beings are not smart enough to keep up with their inventions? That's probably true, but most people will claim that by being organic in nature, there are some levels man never goes beyond.
In fact, there is a common myth that normal human beings only use 10% of their brains. However, scientists claim to have proven this to be false, and that human beings use 100% of the brain. So that's settled then; there is no room for human beings to become smarter. Or is there?
The need to become smarter is there, and this has sparked innovation in both the technology and biotech industries. Currently, there are several companies exploring the smart pill market. This is not about the Limitless movie pill, NZT 48, so don't get excited yet.
However, with drugs like Modafinil - marketed as Provogil - already showing that there are ways in which human beings can improve mental alertness, cognition and working memory, the smart drug industry could get crowded soon. To illustrate this, Teva Pharmaceutical (TEVA) has already entered the market with its generic version of Provogil.
As per this DuckDose.com profile, Modafinil is a racemic mixture, consisting of two isomers (S-Modafinil and R-Modafinil). The drug is primarily manufactured for the treatment of narcolepsy, which is a condition characterized by an extreme tendency to fall asleep whenever in relaxing surroundings. However, it is increasingly finding its way into the office with many employees and top CEOs now using it to boost their cognitive abilities.
This has in turn increased interest in the nootropics (smart drugs) market with more startup companies coming up with their own innovative ways to capitalize on demand. Smart Med is a San Francisco-based nootropics company and according to Dr. Vinh Ngo, its co-founder, the company receives patients from the likes of Facebook (FB), Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) (GOOGL), Uber and other tech startups.
Ngo's treatments include amino acids, nutritional IV drips, prescription drugs and testosterone therapy for men, which he says are intended to help clients become better versions of themselves. "Instead of preventing illness, we're actually optimizing health," Ngo was quoted in an interview last year.
Based on these developments, it is clear that the biotech industry is making progress in the nootropics market. But that's not the only avenue man is looking to explore in order to become smarter.
Some tech players have a more direct approach towards keeping up with AI, and according to Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, the odds aren't as bad as they seem.
Musk's ultimate goal of colonizing planet Mars may be more popular among the masses, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes in his bid to save humanity. One of his latest moves was launching Neuralink, a startup that seeks to link the human brain with computers. Call it "brain hacking" if you may, but according to reports, Musk calls it the "neural lace" technology, which involves implanting tiny brain electrodes that may one day upload and download thoughts.
The ability to upload thoughts will make man smarter in several ways. First, schooling time will be shortened to the mere minutes if not seconds depending on upload speeds and nootropics would have no match for that.
However, the biggest challenge for merging brains with computers has been the implementation of theory into practical technology. In implementation, it is behind nootropics by several years, with prosthetics technology the closest thing there is to Musk's "neural lace."
Conclusion
In summary, the desire for man to become smarter is growing with every innovation. Nootropics seem to be the most realistic avenues but merging AI with the brain could be the ideal solution. It is an interesting scenario worth watching for the next several years as investors continue to weigh potential breakout industries for the future.

British DJ Paul Oakenfold takes trance to Mount Everest, world’s highest gig ever – Economic Times
Posted: at 8:50 am
KATHMANDU: Influential British DJ Paul Oakenfold has reached Mount Everest's base camp where he plans to host the "highest party on earth", performing a set at 5,380 metres.
As climbing season in Nepal kicks into gear, few of the mountaineers heading to the world's highest peak were likely expecting to be joined by the three-time Grammy nominated artist and his dance beats.
Oakenfold -- whose three-decade long career has included collaborations with Madonna and U2 -- is due to perform a set at base camp on Tuesday morning.
"We are here now doing sound checks. We are really looking forward to the show tomorrow. Everyone is really excited here," Oakenfold told AFP by phone from base camp today.
The 53-year-old artist said he had no trekking experience before he set out on the 10-day walk to Everest with a team of yaks and porters hauling the audio equipment needed for the event.
Oakenfold trained for four months before arriving in Nepal in between a hectic schedule of late night gigs, he said.
DJ Paul Oakenfold's SoundTrek on April 10, 2017 and taken on April 6 shows the British artist performing a practice set at Pheriche village on his way to Mount Everest's base camp. (Image:AFP)
"I'm not going to pretend it was easy to get here... but it has been a wonderful trek. If you could see the view I'm looking at, it is very inspiring," he said.
The world's highest peak will provide a very different kind of high to Oakenfold's usual shows, which often draw thousands of revellers.
"The audience will probably be sitting mostly. The air is so thin here, you will run out of breath quite quickly," said Ranzen Jha, a Nepali DJ accompanying Oakenfold.
The gig is the first in the record producer's SoundTrek series, aimed at drawing attention to the effects of global warming and raising money for charities.
Oakenfold is also raising funds to help survivors of Nepal's devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people and left thousands homeless, many of whom are still living in temporary shelters.
"I want to support in the rebuilding and to shed light on the environment... I would like to do my bit," he said.
But not everyone is keen on the idea, with some complaining that the renowned DJ is disturbing the peace and tranquility of the Himalayas.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ is more cyberposeur than cyberpunk – Engadget
Posted: at 8:49 am
Beyond the gunplay and set pieces, the Ghost in the Shell anime also set itself apart by throwing you into the deep end of a world where technology is completely integrated with humans. Most people have cyberbrains -- metal cases for their organic brains that allow them to "jack in" to computers and networks. The film doesn't slow down much to explain the concept of a cyberbrain to you, but you eventually grasp it by how characters use them. At one point, you see an official's hands expand into a multitude of robotic digits, which is clearly a big help for typing faster. While the remake echoes this imagery, it doesn't do anything thoughtful with it.
Take the character of Togusa, for example. In the anime, he's established as the least augmented member of Section 9, the intelligence group led by Major Kusanagi. He uses a traditional revolver, and his lack of cybernetic implants seems like a detriment when he's surrounded by literal supersoldiers. But as he starts to question why he's even on the team, Kusanagi makes an intriguing point: A system with standardized components will inevitably fail. If every member of her team was cybernetically enhanced in the same way, that leaves them open to an attack that could take them all out.
Togusa's mere presence is a check against that design flaw. The entire exchange is something we see often in cyberpunk: Technology doesn't always mean progress. In the remake, they point out that Togusa uses an old gun and that's it.
Perhaps the biggest failure of the American version of Ghost in the Shell is that it simply doesn't do anything new. Whereas the original brought plenty of innovative ideas to the table -- it was one of the few science fiction films to actually build on the Blade Runner aesthetic -- the adaptation is perfectly content with copying surface-level style while dumbing down deeper concepts. While the film has been praised for its style, ultimately it's basically just the original Ghost in the Shell aesthetic mashed together with Blade Runner and a boatload of CGI. The remake's vision of New Port City is also oddly sterile. There's none of the lived-in sense of grit you'd find in most cyberpunk stories.
Even the villain is far less interesting. In the remake, it ends up being yet another evil corporate plot. But in the anime, the "Puppet Master" is a completely synthetic life form "born out of the sea of information." He's not inherently evil, he's just trying to figure out who he is.
"It can also be argued that DNA is nothing more than a program designed to preserve itself," the Puppet Master says when someone claims he's just a computer program. "Life has become more complex in the overwhelming sea of information. And life, when organized into species, relies upon genes to be its memory system. So, man is an individual only because of his intangible memory... and memory cannot be defined, but it defines mankind. The advent of computers, and the subsequent accumulation of incalculable data has given rise to a new system of memory and thought parallel to your own. Humanity has underestimated the consequences of computerization."
Cyberpunk stories have rarely been about easy answers, and that's yet another concept the Ghost in the Shell adaptation fails to grasp. Every conflict ends up having a distinct conclusion, be it the villain or Major's place in the world. At the end of the anime however, Major Kusanagi doesn't defeat the antagonist in the traditional sense. She joins with him to create an entirely new being -- a union of a human soul and brain together with a purely cybernetic being.
After being transplanted into a new body, she looks out over the cityscape and simply asks: "And where do I go from here? The network is vast and infinite."

Players Decide How To Survive In Proxyndic’s Cyberpunk Future – Siliconera
Posted: at 8:49 am
By Joel Couture . April 10, 2017 . 2:00pm
Once players walk off of their shuttle inProxyndic, theyre on their own in a hostile future, left to find ways to survive and thrive in this cyberpunk world.
There is no official government in Proxyyndic, and the world is run by a series of corporations, militias, and syndicates, all battling for supremacy. Players will be left to do whatever they like in this world, having to deal with the consequences later.
Survival can mean many things in this game. Players are free to gamble, trying to raise money through high-stakes card games. They can join a faction, doing work for them, but will have to deal with the fallout from rival gangs. They can also set out to form their own syndicate, play the stock market, or get an ordinary job, finding many different ways to make the money they need.
Proxyndics vision of the future is a dangerous one, though, and players may need to defend themselves using guns or hand-to-and combat. They will steadily grow as they fight, gaining new powers and increased stats through the games RPG levelling system. They can also hire bodyguards to keep them safe, or just try to keep a low profile, staying out of sight and locking their doors at night.
Players will have to attend to more than their financial needs, making sure theyre fed and well rested. Enemies are not the only thing that can kill the player in this game.
Proxyndic has already passed through Steam Greenlight, and is expected to release in Q2 this year.

The Last Night Trailer Teases A Cyberpunk Action-Adventure – One Angry Gamer (blog)
Posted: at 8:49 am
(Last Updated On: April 10, 2017)
Odd Tales and Raw Fury are working on a new game called The Last Night. Its an indie cyberpunk tale set in the future and. thats about all I know.
A teaser trailer for the game was released along with the promise of more information set to be released in the near future. You can check out the trailer below.
Thanks to a YouTube recommendation, I actually did manage to find out a bit more about the game thanks to a video from Independent Pixel, who has two and a half minutes worth of gameplay footage for the upcoming title. It appears to be a hybrid, action-adventure of sorts.
You can check out the video below.
Okay, so first of all the background graphics and city look amazing. As players walk through the environment theyll have a gun they can pull out to kill people and robots with.
It kind of reminds me a little bit of Out of this World.
Unfortunately the video above isnt really representative of what Raw Fury and Odd Tales are working on, though. That video was for a game jam from back in 2015.
I have no idea what the game will look like now, but the teaser trailer at the top seemed to hint at a mixture of pixels with 3D vector mapping. If the stages really are in 3D with pixelated characters then that would be a pretty cool art-style set within a cyberpunk universe.
They will be rolling out more info on this interesting looking game at some point throughout 2017 we just dont know when. You can keep your eyes peeled for more info by visiting the Odd Tales website.
For now Raw Fury seems to be focused on getting Kingdom New Lands up and out for the Nintendo Switch following the release of the game on iOS and Android devices.
