National Atheist Day 2017: Quotes, Facts To Mark The Day – International Business Times
Posted: at 8:00 pm
There is no dearth of religious holidays. Be it Christmas, Diwali, Eid or Hanukkah, all religions in the world have some or the other festivities going on throughout the year. But, these holidays carry little meaning for atheists.
For people who lack belief in gods, there is National Atheist Day April 1. And the story behind how the day cameabout is amusing.
In 2003, a spoof story said a Florida man sought American Civil Liberties Unions help and filed a case about discrimination inflicted on atheists by Christian and Jewish festivals and said atheists did not have any holiday to celebrate. To this, the judge replied that April 1, which is April Fools Day, was the holiday for atheists. Readers believed the story when it first appearedonline and accepted that April 1 was declared as National Atheist Day.
Since then, April 1 is also known as National Atheist Day. However, there has been no recorded activity for this day.
Check out somequotes on atheism, gathered from Goodreads, Ask Atheists and Brainy Quote.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is telling NATO allies it is time to pay up.
Fox News , KXVA 2:04 PM. CDT April 03, 2017
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson went to his first NATO meeting and gave U.S. allies some homework.
Secretary Tillerson issued an assignment to U.S. allies, requesting that countries failing to meet the NATO defense spending threshold offer a plan on how theyll honor that commitment.
The first is ensuring that NATO has all the resources, financial and otherwise, that are necessary for NATO to fulfill its mission, Secretary Tillerson said.
Secretary Tillerson gave them less than two months. The deadline is May 25 the next NATO leaders meeting.
In 2014, NATO leaders agreed to move towards a target of spending two percent of the size of their countries economies on defense. The U.S., United Kingdom, Poland, Greece and Estonia are the only five NATO countries reaching that target. There are 28 nations in NATO.
As for the U.S. response if NATO countries fail to spend more on defense, State Department officials refuse to say.
Germany is already pushing back on the U.S. request. Reuters reports German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel responded: Two percent would mean military expenses of some 70 billion Euros. I dont know any German politician who would claim that is reachable nor desirable.
He argues security is more than military spending.
Before reprimanding NATO allies on spending, Secretary Tillerson opened his remarks to his international counterparts stressing the U.S. commitment to NATO is strong and this alliance remains the bedrock for transatlantic security a message of relief for some.
I remember at the beginning of the [Trump] presidency, they were saying NATO is not so important anymore, it is not the key for security. Now we see that the United States says, No, it is cornerstone of transatlantic alliance.
Secretary Tillerson also warned Russia that NATO is fundamental to countering both non-viloent, but at times violent, Russian agitation and Russian aggression.
He gave a very strong message stressing that the United States is together with Ukraine in fighting the Russian aggression.
Ukraines foreign minister also says Tillerson promised the United States would maintain sanctions against Russia until it honors ceasefire agreements in Ukraine.
NATO leaders are also discussing counterterrorism efforts, defeating ISIS and cyber security.
And there are substantial questions of strategy to address those challenges like how much the Trump Administration would consider working with Russia to defeat ISIS and the future of Syria and whether President Bashar al Assad will be part of it.

NATO counter-IED equipment delivered to Iraq’s Ministry of the Interior – DefenseNews.com
Posted: at 7:58 pm
WASHINGTONNATO has delivered 160 sets of counter-IED equipment to Iraqs Ministry of the Interior on Sunday, the alliance announced in a news release.
The equipment, financed by NATOs Defence Capacity Building Trust Fund, will be used by Iraqs security forces to curb terror efforts to harm both military personnel and civilians with improvised explosive devices.
One of our best tools in the fight against terrorism is training local forces, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on Friday. [T]his equipment will help save lives."

Photo Credit: NATO In July 2015, at Iraqs request, NATO agreed to provide defense capacity-building support in countering IEDs; explosive ordnance disposal and demining; security sector reform; and military medicine and civil military planning among other issues.
NATO trained more than 350 Iraqi security officers in Jordan in 2016. At the Warsaw Summit in July, NATO allies agreed to expand this training into Iraq. NATO advisers have been leading the training in Iraq since January.

‘NATO’s stewards of public purse burning money studying Russian jokes’ – RT
Posted: at 7:58 pm
Published time: 3 Apr, 2017 13:59
Russian comedy deserves a wider airing around the world, but that is not something US taxpayers should be paying NATO's professors to study. It is a ridiculous project, says investor and writer Charles Ortel.
NATO's Strategic Communications Center has published a report into Russian comedy programs. According to researchers, humor is being used as a tool of propaganda aimed at national and international audiences.
One of the conclusions is that Russian comics depict leaders in a negative light to discredit them. The investigation claims George W. Bush is often portrayed as unintelligent and widely hated, while the current US president is depicted as a madman and French President Francois Hollande as "dim-witted."
Investor and writer Charles Ortel told RT that this is absolutely outrageous NATO spends its resources on this ridiculous project."
If we recall, it was last week that Secretary of State Tillerson informed the NATO countries that they are going to have to shoulder their fair share of military expenditure which many have not done over more than a decade funding NATO. And now we find out that NATO gets together and decides to spend our scarce resources on this ridiculous project, Ortel said.
I am sure Russian comedy deserves a wider airing around the world, but that is not something the US taxpayers should be paying professors and others to study, he added.
When you look behind the public figures of NATO, what you discover is that historically when you go way back, it is the UK and the US that provide the bulk of the military force and the bulk of the money toward NATO, Ortel told RT.
And now with Brexit in process over the next two years and with global economic slowdown and problems around the world, Ortel said he would hope these profligate governments, the EU and the UNwould take a hard look at how our money is spent because, after a while, you run out of money.
Why are the stewards of the public purse burning money? asks Ortel.
He says he would hope that Donald Trump and the federal branch of the US government is serious about making sure that NATO and the UN and US branches of government spend taxpayers money wisely only on services that are really worthwhile.
The statements, views and opinions expressed in this column are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of RT.

Oh My: Former Obama NSA Susan Rice Reportedly Directed Dubious ‘Unmasking’ of Trump Allies – Townhall
Posted: at 7:58 pm
Yes, that would be the same Susan Rice who made herself famous fordelivering outright lies on national television about the Benghazi terrorist attack, the nature of which the Obama administration was eager to deliberately distort for political reasons in the thick of a campaign. It would also be the same Susan Rice described by Newsweek as President Obama's "right-hand woman" in 2014. As Isaid on air yesterday, this whole Russia meddling/wiretap saga has become so convoluted and bereft of verifiable facts that it's quite difficult to keep following the plot. Here's my stab at a succinct summation: Ourintelligence agencies and members of relevant committees onboth sides of the aisle all agree that Moscow tried to meddle in the 2016 election. Theirclearpreference was to help Donald Trump and damage Hillary Clinton, whom they assumed would win anyway. The Kremlin has also deployed their propaganda and subterfuge toundermine Republicans, too. Their overarching goal is to undercut faith in the American system. And while there isno factualbasis forPresident Trump's counter-claim that his predecessor ordered his phones to be tapped, there are real indications that some people within Trump's orbit were monitored in some way -- and the series of one-sided leaks on that front does look to many like a deliberate push within elements of the government to damage Trump's presidency. There is alsono evidence that the Trump campaign coordinated or colluded with the Russians.
One of the latest twists in all of this wasthe claim by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, a Republican, that Trump-tied officials whose communications had been incidentally intercepted (they themselves hadnot been targeted) as a part of foreign surveillance operations had their redacted identities "unmasked" last year. Who did this, and why -- especially since the intercepted communications in question allegedly had nothing to do with Russia? Late last week,Fox News' Adam Housley added some meat onto those suspicious bones, citing unnamed sources:
And nowEli Lake's reporting at Bloomberg appears to confirm what the rumor mill has been buzzing about for days --Rice was at the center of this:
Lake writes that given what is known about what happened, both the incidental collection and the unmasking were likely conducted within the confines of the law, but the episode raises new questions about (a) why a senior Obama official was so keen to identify the US citizens mentioned or involved in these conversations, (b) whether those conversations had any genuine investigative value beyond political curiosity (Housley's sources say no), and (c) how the existence of some of these conversations ended up gettingmore widely disseminated, eventually leaking into the press. The piecealso reminds readers that Ms. Rice claimed ignorance on the entire subject when she was asked about it a few weeks ago:
Perhaps there's an innocent explanation for all of this, and perhaps Rice believed she was answering that question accurately. But for previously-alluded-to reasons, it's hardly a stretch to imagine Rice flat-out lying on television. One of the indications that Chairman Nunes really had exposed something significant came last week camewhen the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff-- who has beenloudly attacking his GOP counterpart and spreadingunfounded claims and conspiracies related to the Russia probe -- got a look at the same documents Nunes saw (which led to Nunes'subsequent briefing of both President Trump and the newsmedia). AsRed State points out, Schiff emerged from that session fixated on process, while remaining notably mumon anything pertaining to content. It's not unreasonable to hypothesize that he read the documents and realized that something damaging lies within. Maybe that something was Barack Obama's lightning-rod NSA repeatedly requesting the unmasking of Trump officials' communications for dubious reasons.
For months, Democrats have insisted that the Russian meddling side of this story is the only thing thatmatters. While I agree that probes into those disquieting issues are justified and important, I've also taken the national security leak element of the controversy quite seriously. These new developments demand further inquiry and real answers. And today's introduction of an untrustworthy partisan actor within the previous president's inner-most circle into the mix all but guarantees that this story is about to become more politically explosive. I'll leave you withthis column by the Wall Street Journal's Kim Strassel:

The Executive With Uber Invokes Fifth Amendment – Petro Global … – Petro Global News 24
Posted: at 7:58 pm
An executive at Uber accused of stealing technology for driverless cars from Google his former employer is invoking his Fifth Amendment right to avoid incrimination, said his lawyers.
Attorney representing Anthony Levandowski, the ex-head of the self-driving car unit at Google, who is leading an effort similar to that at Uber at this time, said he broadly asserted his Fifth Amendment rights due to a potential for criminal action from the case.
The maneuver made by Levandowski adds additional intrigue to this fight between a pair of technology industry giants, which have squared off in a race to put self-driving vehicles on the road.
Levandowski is the centerpiece of a lawsuit between Waymo and Google. Waymo was spun off from Google and is a standalone subsidiary of Alphabet.
The company has accused Levandowski of poaching employees and stealing documents prior to quitting at Google and following that colluding with Uber in using the technology to help the ride-hailing service advance its efforts at driverless cars.
Just after he left Google, Levandowski begin his own start-up for self-driving trucks called Otto. Only six months after the business was formed, Uber bought the company for a price of $680 million.
A motion was filed by Waymo seeking an injunction earlier in March to stop the development of autonomous vehicles at Uber.
As part of its motion to seek injunction Waymo said Levandowski, while still employed by Google installed special software allowing him to download more than 14,000 files equal to 9.7 gigabytes of information that pertained to their program for driverless cars.
Uber has been ordered to hand those files over.
A private hearing transcript held before a judge in San Francisco shows that lawyers from Levandowski said he was using his Fifth Amendment rights in not turning the documents over that might pertain to this case.
A lawyer for Uber said the made it clear to Levandowski that he must release documents that are relevant to this case as part of discovery.
One of the attorneys representing Levandowski said the executive at Uber asserted his Fifth Amendment right to protect him against any compelled disclosure which would identify existence, location or the possession of any documents.
He added that Levandowskis decision to use his Fifth Amendment right might change as they look further into the case. This situation raises a number of questions about Levandowskis future at Uber, as a Judge told Uber that it had a right to order Levandowski to cooperate or they could fire him.

The Bill of Rights at the Border: Fourth Amendment Limits on Searching Your Data and Devices – EFF
Posted: at 7:57 pm
More than 325,000 people enter the United States via airports every day, with hundreds of thousands more crossing by land at the borders. Not only is that a lot of people, its also a lot of computers, smartphones, and tablets riding along in our pockets, bags, and trunks. Unfortunately, the Fourth Amendment protections we enjoy inside the U.S. for our devices arent always as strong when were crossing bordersand the Department of Homeland Security takes advantage of it. On the other hand, the border is not a Constitution-free zone. What are the limits to how and how much customs and immigrations officials can access our data?
To help answer those questions, were offering the second in our series of posts on the Constitution at the border, focusing this time on the Fourth Amendment. For Part 1 on the First Amendment, click here.
The Default Privacy Rule
The Fourth Amendment forbids unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. In most circumstances, the Fourth Amendment requires that government agents obtain a warrant from a judge by presenting preliminary evidence establishing probable cause to believe that the thing to be searched or seized likely contains evidence of illegal activity before the officer is authorized to search.
The Border Search Exception
Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has sanctioned a border search exception to the probable cause warrant requirement on the theory that the government has an interest in protecting the integrity of the border by enforcing the immigration and customs laws. As a result, routine searches at the border do not require a warrant or any individualized suspicion that the thing to be searched contains evidence of illegal activity.
The Exception to the Exception: Non-Routine Searches
But the border search exception is not without limits. As noted, this exception only applies to routine searches, such as those of luggage or bags presented at the border. Non-routine searches such as searches that are highly intrusive and impact the dignity and privacy interests of individuals, or are carried out in a particularly offensive manner must meet a higher standard: individualized reasonable suspicion. In a nutshell, that means border agents must have specific and articulable facts suggesting that a particular person may be involved in criminal activity.
For example, the Supreme Court held that disassembling a gas tank is routine and so a warrantless and suspicionless search is permitted. However, border agents cannot detain a traveler until they have defecated to see if they are smuggling drugs in their digestive tract unless the agents have a reasonable suspicion that the traveler is a drug mule.
Border Searches of Digital Devices
How does this general framework apply to digital devices and data at the border? Border agents argue that the border search exception applies to digital searches. We think they are wrong. Given that digital devices like smartphones and laptops contain highly personal information and provide access to even more private information stored in the cloud, the border search exception should not apply.
As Chief Justice Roberts recognized in a 2014 case, Riley v. California:
Snooping into such privacies is extraordinarily intrusive, not routine. Thus, when the government asserted the so-called incident to arrest exception to justify searching a cell phone without a warrant during or immediately after an arrest, the Supreme Court called foul.
Why is the Riley decision important at the border? For one thing, the incident to arrest exception that the government tried to invoke is directly comparable to the border search exception, because both are considered categorical exemptions. Given that the intrusion is identical in both instances, the same privacy protections should apply.
Moreover, with the ubiquity of cloud computing, a digital device serves as a portal to highly sensitive data, where the privacy interests are even more significant. Following Riley, we believe that any border search of a digital device or data in the cloud is unlawful unless border agents first obtain a warrant by showing, to a judge, in advance, that they have probable cause to believe the device (or cloud account) likely contains evidence of illegal activity.
However, lower courts havent quite caught up with Riley. For example, the Ninth Circuit held that border agents only need reasonable suspicion of illegal activity before they could conduct a non-routine forensic search of a travelers laptop, aided by sophisticated software. Even worse, the Ninth Circuit also held that a manual search of a digital device is routine and so a warrantless and suspicionless search is still reasonable under the Fourth Amendment. Some courts have been even less protective. Last year a court in the Eastern District of Michigan upheld a computer-aided border search of a travelers electronic devices that lasted several hours without reasonable suspicion.
EFF is working hard to persuade courts (and border agents) to adopt the limits set forth in the Riley decision for border searches of cellphones and other digital devices. In the meantime, what should you do to protect your digital privacy?
Much turns on your individual circumstances and personal risk assessment. The consequences for non-compliance with a command from a CBP agent to unlock a device will be different, for example, for a U.S. citizen versus a non-citizen. If you are a U.S. citizen, agents must let you enter the country eventually; they cannot detain you indefinitely. If you are a lawful permanent resident, agents might raise complicated questions about your continued status as a resident. If you are a foreign visitor, agents may deny you entry entirely.
We recommend that everyone conduct their own threat model to determine what course of action to take at the border. Our in depth Border Search Whitepaper offers you a spectrum of tools and practices that you may choose to use to protect your personal data from government intrusion. For a more general outline of potential practices, see our pocket guides to Knowing Your Rights and Protecting Your Data at the Border.

Dem Rep Gutierrez: ‘Sanctuary Cities’ Are Actually ‘Fourth Amendment Cities’ – Breitbart News

On Wednesdays broadcast of CNNs New Day, Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) argued, they call them sanctuary cities, what I would saytheyre Fourth Amendment cities.

Gutierrez said, Heres how I see it, they call them sanctuary cities, what I would say, Chris, theyre Fourth Amendment cities. Why do I say that? If you supply a warrant to the city of Chicago, right, we will absolutely honor that warrant. But youve got to get a warrant. So think about it a moment, the DEA, the FBI, the ATF, they get warrants, right? They go and pick people up. What ICE, which is another federal law enforcement agency, does, is it wants to have people detained, and wants the city of Chicago to go after people without any probable cause being submitted before the court, and without a warrant.

Second Amendment Victories Continue to Pile Up – The New American
Posted: at 7:56 pm
The restoration of Second Amendment-protected rights in the states is happening so quickly that its hard to keep up. On Friday, the Georgia legislature sent a bill to Governor Nathan Deal that would allow concealed handguns on public college campuses, with some exceptions built in to appease Deal, who vetoed a similar but stronger measure last year. Jerry Henry, executive director of GeorgiaCarry.org, a pro-gun rights group, was realistic: Its not the bill that we wanted but its the bill we got. It gives [us] a foot in the door. If Deal signs the bill, Georgia would become the 11th state with this kind of campus-carry law.
Georgia legislators also sent to Deals desk a bill that improved a number of the states existing gun laws, including giving individuals moving to the state from reciprocal carry agreement states a 90-day grace period to obtain a Georgia Weapons License (GWL) while continuing to carry legally using their previous states license. That bill also explicitly prohibits any probate judge from suspending, extending, delaying, or avoiding the process of approving a GWL application made by a citizen of the state.
In addition, it would protect firearms instructors from civil liability for any injuries caused by the failure of one of their students to use a firearm safely.
A third bill sent to Georgia Governor Beal would allow Virginia concealed handgun permit holders to enjoy permit reciprocity with Georgia.
The next day, multiple pro-gun and pro-hunting bills moved ahead in Virginia, including a measure that would allow any law-abiding person to carry a firearm in any state, county, or municipal park or other recreation area. Another bill would allow law-abiding Virginians to carry a firearm onto school property while dropping off or picking up students. Still another would protect shooting ranges from frivolous lawsuits and noise complaints as long as they are operating lawfully. This bill is a direct pushback against anti-gun groups that have filed such lawsuits and complaints in attempts to shut those ranges down.
Last week, North Dakota became the 14th state to allow constitutional carry, just weeks after New Hampshire passed similar legislation. Other constitutional-carry bills are pending in Alabama, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
A Michael Bloomberg-funded move in New Mexico to set up a gun registration system was rejected last week, following voter rejection of such a proposal in Maine last November.
On the national level, gun owners are celebrating House Speaker Paul Ryans withdrawal of his anti-gun ObamaCare Lite bill because of its hidden potential to invade Second Amendment-protected rights. Gun Owners of America (GOA) refused to back the bill unless it contained language that prohibited insurance companies from discriminating against gun owners, doctors from entering patients gun ownership information in any federal database, and federal agencies from trolling Medicaid and other federal health databases in order to add names to the NICS background-check database. GOAs demands were ignored, and so the group rallied its members against the passage of Ryans bill.
Also on the national level, Second Amendment supporters are still celebrating the move by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke on his first day in office, which revoked a last-second move by former President Obama to phase out the use of lead ammunition for bird hunting on federal land. Under normal circumstances, such a directive wouldnt have rated a footnote, but in the present environment it showed that President Trump was not only determined to respect the Second Amendment but to put people in place in his cabinet with a similar determination.
And, just days later, President Trump himself repealed the so-called Social Security gun ban, under which certain Social Security beneficiaries would have had their Second Amendment-protected rights arbitrarily revoked without due process.
Another hopeful sign at the federal level is Trumps nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. After reviewing the available background of Gorsuch, 30-year defense attorney Andrew Branca, writing in National Review, stated:
As a strong Second Amendment advocate and someone who has concealed-carried a firearm for pretty much every day of my adult life I, for one, welcome Judge Gorsuchs nomination to the Supreme Court, with great optimism for the Courts future Second Amendment jurisprudence.
Restoring Second Amendment-protected rights after decades of efforts to abrogate them is an inch-by-inch process, and that process is being helped along greatly by a president who is determined to keep his promises in this area. On the importance of the Second Amendment, Trump wrote:
The Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law-abiding Americans. The Constitution doesnt create that right it ensures that the government cant take it away. Our Founding Fathers knew, and our Supreme Court has upheld, that the Second Amendments purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families. Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own.
These victories, taken one at a time, dont appear to amount to much. Taken together, however, they indicate not only the momentum shift in favor of the Second Amendment, but a better understanding of it. The language does confuse some: A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
The following statement concerning the importance of books in a well-educated culture, offered by Stephen Halbrook, a senior fellow at The Independent Institute, is instructive in clarifying the Founders meaning: A well-educated citizenry, being necessary to the culture of a free state, the right of the people to keep and read books shall not be infringed.
