Elon Musk wants to merge man and machine here’s what he’ll need to work out – The Conversation UK
Posted: at 8:08 am
Computers and brains already talk to each other daily in high-tech labs and they do it better and better. For example, disabled people can now learn to govern robotic limbs by the sheer power of their mind. The hope is that we may one day be able to operate spaceships with our thoughts, upload our brains to computers and, ultimately, create cyborgs.
Now Elon Musk is joining the race. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has acquired Neuralink, a company aiming to establish a direct link between the mind and the computer. Musk has already shown how expensive space technology can be run as a private enterprise. But just how feasible is his latest endeavour?
Neurotechnology was born in the 1970s when Jaques Vidal proposed that electroencephalography (EEG), which tracks and records brain-wave patterns via sensors placed on the scalp (electrodes), could be used to create systems that allow people to control external devices directly with their mind. The idea was to use computer algorithms to transform the recorded EEG signals into commands. Since then, interest in the idea has been growing rapidly.
Indeed, these brain-computer interfaces have driven a revolution in the area of assistive technologies letting people with quadriplegia feed themselves and even walk again. In the past few years, major investments in brain research from the US (the BRAIN initiative) and the EU (the Human Brain project) have further advanced research on them. This has pushed applications of this technology into the area of human augmentation using the technology to improve our cognition and other abilities.
The combination of humans and technology could be more powerful than artificial intelligence. For example, when we make decisions based on a combination of perception and reasoning, neurotechnologies could be used to augment our perception. This could help us in situations such when seeing a very blurry image from a security camera and having to decide whether to intervene or not.
Despite investments, the transition from using the technology in research labs to everyday life is still slow. The EEG hardware is totally safe for the user, but records very noisy signals. Also, research labs have been mainly focused on using it to understand the brain and to propose innovative applications without any follow-up in commercial products. Other very promising initiatives, such as using commercial EEG systems to let people drive a car with their thoughts, have remained isolated.
To try to overcome some of these limitations, several major companies have recently announced investments in research into brain-computer interfaces. Bryan Johnson from human intelligence company Kernel recently acquired the MIT spin-off firm KRS, which is promising to make a data-driven revolution in understanding neurodegenerative diseases. Facebook is hiring a brain-computer interface engineer to work in its secretive hardware division, Building 8.
Musks company is the latest. Its neural lace technology involves implanting electrodes in the brain to measure signals. This would allow getting neural signals of much better quality than EEG but it requires surgery. The project is still quite mysterious, although Musk has promised more details about it soon. Last year he stated that brain-computer interfaces are needed to confirm humans supremacy over artificial intelligence.
The project might seem ambitious, considering the limits of current technology. BCI spellers, which allow people to spell out words by looking at letters on a screen, are still much slower than traditional communication means, which Musk has already defined as incredibly slow. Similar speed limitations apply when using the brain to control a video game.
What we really need to make the technology reliable is more accurate, non-invasive techniques to measure brain activity. We also need to improve our understanding of the brain processes and how to decode them. Indeed, the idea of uploading or downloading our thoughts to or from a computer is simply impossible with our current knowledge of the human brain. Many processes related to memory are still not understood by neuroscientists. The most optimistic forecasts say it will be at least 20 years before brain-computer interfaces will become technologies that we use in our daily lives.
But that doesnt make Musks initiative useless. The neural lace could initially be used to study the brain mechanisms and treat disorders such as epilepsy or major depression. Together with electrodes for reading the brain activity, we could also implant electrodes for stimulating the brain making it possible to detect and halt epileptic seizures.
Brain-computer interfaces also face major ethical issues, especially those based on sensors surgically implanted in the brain. Most people are unlikely to want to have brain surgery or be fit to have it unless vital for their health. This could significantly limit the number of potential users of Musks neural lace. Kernels original idea when acquiring the company KRS was also to implant electrodes in peoples brain, but the company changed its plans six months later due to difficulties related to invasive technologies.
Its easy for billionaires like Musk to be optimistic about the development of brain-computer interfaces. But, rather than dismissing them, lets remember that these visions are nevertheless crucial. They push the boundaries and help researchers set long-term goals.
Theres every reason to be optimistic. Neurotechnology started only started a few years after man first set foot on the moon perhaps reflecting the need for a new big challenge after such a giant leap for mankind. And the brain-computer interfaces were indeed pure science fiction at the time.
In 1965, the Sunday comic strip Our New Age stated:
By 2016, mans intelligence and intellect will be able to be increased by drugs and by linking human brains directly to computers!
We are not there yet, but together we can win the challenge.

CF readies radiography program – Ocala
Posted: at 8:07 am
Two years in the making
College of Central Florida is in the final stages of opening its new radiography program, one that will help hospitals, urgent care centers and other medical facilities fill job vacancies.
Radiographers, known in recent years as radiologic technologists or rad techs, are best known in general terms as X-ray technicians. It has been two years since CF announced its plans to launch the program.
Last fall, CF hired Mitchell Housenick, who will serve as the radiography program manager. Housenick launched three other radiography programs at colleges around the country, the last of which at Cambridge Institute of Allied Health and Technology in Atlanta. Housenick said he plans to make Ocala home for many years.
Housenick has been putting together the curriculum for CFs two-year course that will meet the strict accreditation standards set forth by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. CFs curriculum will meet that JRCERTs highest accreditation level Gold Seal status.
Gold Seal ensures employers that the students have taken the state approved curriculum, which based on high ethical standards and transparency.
Up until 2006, radiographers only needed a certification to work in the field. Since then, radiographers must have an associates degree. CFs two-year program will open in August with 20 students.
So far, about three dozen students have applied. CF will host three information sessions for students wishing to know more about careers in radiography. Three sessions will be offered at the CF, 3001 SW College Road: Friday, June 12 and June 15. All sessions will begin at 3 p.m. in Building 37, Room 103.
To qualify for the program, applicants must have 10 credit hours in mathematics, English and anatomy. Students must have a 2.5 grade point average. Students will be ranked based on a point system, which will use grade point averages and other data. Students will not be interviewed.
After completing the 77-credit-hour program, graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Housenick said in all of the programs he has launched, every student has passed the certification examine on the first attempt. Students typically get three tries to pass the certification examine.
This (a radiography degree) opens the path into other areas of medical imaging, said Housenick, adding students need the radiography degree to further their careers into mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) , computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine or other related imagining specialties.
Florida labor statistics state there will be a need for 88 more radiographers in Marion, Levy and Citrus counties by the year 2024. Of those needed positions, 43 will be new positions and the remaining slots will be needed to fill vacated positions.
Local radiographer salaries range from about $35,000 to $50,000 annually. The lower salaries would be for employees of smaller medical groups and private offices and the higher salaries would be for employees working at a trauma hospital, officials said Thursday.
There is a need right now for radiographers in Ocala, said Deanna M. Stentiford, associate dean of health sciences.
For the past decade, CF and Marion Technical College (formerly known as Community Technical & Adult Education, or CTAE) have partnered to offer the degree program. Until now, radiography students took five or so prerequisite courses at CF and then completed the radiography coursework at Marion Technical College.
After finishing that coursework, CF would certify Marion Technical Colleges associate degrees. About 25 Marion Technical College students graduate each year in radiography.
But two years ago, CFs accrediting agency (the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS) revealed it could no longer accredit CF if it continued to certify off-site programs unless a CF employee was teaching courses in that field at the off-site facility.
The ruling meant that, CF can no longer enter into articulation agreements like the one with Marion Technical College, without a change in the way it was delivered. Deputy Superintendent of Schools Heidi Maier and CF President Jim Henningsen are discussing ways to create a certification pathway so that Marion Technical Colleges program will continue, as well.
We will still offer radiography at Marion Technical College, said Mark Vianello, the School Districts executive director of vocational and technical programs.
Lois Brauckmuller, CFs spokeswoman, confirmed that the school district and CF leadership are having conversations about forming a radiography partnership.

Match Preview – Granada CF vs FC Barcelona – isportsweb.com (blog)
Posted: at 8:07 am

It is tight at the summit of La Liga, and Barcelona will look to go top of the league as they face a tricky away trip to Granada Sunday afternoon.
Barca are two points off league leaders Real Madrid (Barca 63, Madrid 65) who have a game in hand and play Alaves Sunday morning. They have scored the most goals in the league (81) and have lost only ONE league game since October. They also boast the top two leading men for the Pichichi (leagues top goalscorer award) in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez who are on 25 and 22 league goals respectively. Not to mention also boasting the top two men leading the league in assists in Neymar with 10 and Suarez on nine. In short, M-S-N are pretty good. A win at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes will keep Luis Enriques men in the race for the title and possibly on top depending on Madrids result with Alaves.
Fun Fact Barcelona have nearly five times as many wins as Granada (Barcelona 19, Granada 4) and over five times as fewer losses this season (Barca 3, Granada 17).
As for Granada, they are desperate. Three straight losses have them 19th in the league on 19 points, seven points below Sporting Gijon who are 17th. So even a win against Barcelona wont get them off the relegation zone, but it improve their situation nonetheless. Theyve also scored the second-fewest goals in the league (25) and have given up the second-most goals (57). Time is ticking, manager Lucas Alcaraz will have to pull off a near-miracle in order for this club to escape relegation.
Last time these two teams metwas back in October, with Rafinha scoring the loan goal in a 1-0 win at the Camp Nou.
Matchup To Watch: Neymar (Barcelona) vs Granadas Defense
Is there a better player in the world at the moment than Neymar? A goal and an assist against Uruguay, plus another goal against Paraguay during the international break has him in tremendous form.
4 @neymarjr has scored four goals and has provided four assists in his last four home games for #Brazil in WC Qualifiers. Unstoppable.
OptaJavier (@OptaJavier) March 29, 2017
And if the stat by OptaJavier isnt enough, Neymar has also logged eight goals and 10 assists for the season, the Brazilian is nearly unplayable at the moment. That being said, Granada will have their work cut out for them, even if they stick to playing five defenders at the back.
Prediction Granada 0-3 Barcelona
Its a must-win for both teams, Barcelona need to keep pace with Real Madrid, Granada need to stave off the drop. The trio of Messi-Suarez-Neymar, M-S-N, will be too much for the hosts and should win comfortably. Theres ten games left, and no team can leave anything to chance.

The Paper Pulpit: God’s Word and political correctness | Features … – Sanford Herald (registration)
Posted: at 8:06 am
There is a widespread belief in todays world that you are simply not up-to-speed unless you are politically correct in everything you say and do. The self-appointed culture authoritarians who determine what is currently fashionable have even decided that the Bible, Gods Word, is not politically correct.
In Berlin, Germany on November 9, 2006, a group of so-called biblical specialists released a new version of the Bible in which inclusive language and political correctness replaces what they considered some divisive teachings of Christianity. They said the Bible needed a more just language for certain groups.
According to the AFP News Agency the PCV (Politically Correct Version) of the Bible was presented at a book fair in the city of Frankfort. It is published by the Oxford University Press. It no longer refers to God as Father, but as our Mother and Father. Likewise, Jesus is not referred to as Gods Son, but rather as the child of God. The title Lord is replaced with God or the Eternal One. Satan, strangely, is still referred to with masculine pronouns. In other words, God is required to be politically correct, but Satan isnt.
The injustices of all previous Bible translations, it claims, are numerous. It states that the begats in the King James Translation favors fathers over mothers. Out the window they go. And whenever the wife of a Biblical husband is known, the editors inserted her name into the text. The metaphors of evil as darkness and light as good were considered offensive to people of color. Similarly, references to the blind, the deaf and the lame are insensitive to people with disabilities so they were changed.
References to the right hand of God was said to be offensive to left-handed people. My wife, who went home to be with the Lord on April 5, 2016, was left-handed. It never bothered her in the least. Parents guide their children because discipline was considered offensive. References to circumcision posed a problem to the translators because they could think of no way to translate it so it would apply to the female gender. The big challenge came in how to deal with God. Personal pronouns were outlawed. Our Father became Our Father-Mother. To mention one gender, not both, might offend someone.
In addition to the PCV translation, Martin Dreyer, pastor and founder of the sect called Jesus Freaks, published what he called The Peoples Bible in an attempt to make the message of Christianity more relevant and inclusive. Jesus returned rather than was resurrected. He multiplied hamburgers instead of the fish and loaves to feed the hungry multitude. In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger brother squandered his inheritance at dance clubs and ended up cleaning bathrooms at McDonalds.
What needless and misdirected inanity! It is a shame that some people, even when highly educated, can get bent out of shape by the fact that the Bible contains language used by the culture at the time it was written. How else could God have inspired His Word? It seems to me that getting bogged down over whether God is right-handed or left-handed is absurd. I am reminded of another time when those who thought of themselves as scholars argued over how many angels could fit on the head of a straight pin.
I believe it is Gods will for our lives to be changed by the truth found in the Bible, not that Bible truth be changed to fit todays arbitrary politically correct standards. The same Holy Spirit who originally inspired the writers of Scripture is able to guide us to interpret and apply it to our lives and to the culture in which we live.
Please be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible translation some people will ever read.

Political correctness has crept into high school hockey – Ricentral.com
Posted: at 8:06 am
Having spend 40 years as a high school administrator, athletic director, coach and teacher, Im completely baffled and embarrassed by the hockey principals committee and executive director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL).
The Crusaders of Prout defeated the Broncos of Burrillville on Saturday night, March 11, for the Division I championship hockey title.
The Division I tournament involves the Division I teams that did not qualify for the state tournament. Burrillville finished fifth with a 6-10 record Prout finished sixth out of an eight-team league with a 5-11 record.
My question is, as a former hockey coach, whos idea was it to have a state championship tournament for two teams who didnt qualify for the state tournament in the first place?
Has political correctness crept into the RIIL? If you dont finish in the top four of your league, you dont qualify for the play-off-period! No, now we need to start a new division for the fifth and sixth place teams to vie for a title for non-qualifiers to be polite. Oh, I get it, we need teams with losing records to have a change for a trophy and medals that mean absolutely nothing.
Back in the day when I played, then coached, if you didnt finish in the top four, you didnt qualify for the state title. Your season was over and you went and watched the top teams compete.
Im not saying that the fifth and sixth teams didnt play hard, but they didnt play hard enough to earn a spot in the real state tourney.
In my experience with hockey, over 40 years, youre doing a disservice to your school, coaches and players by allowing them to play for a bogus-concocted tourney that is meaningless and serves no purpose to anyone.
The RIIL should know better than to allow two teams to compete for a state championship, when they have no business competing at all. However, I do praise the effort of Prout and Burrillville, as they were put in a no win situation by the RIIL.
Richard Walsh is a retired athletics director at the former Warwick Veterans Memorial High School.
