How Technology Is Changing the Fitness Industry Today – Tech.Co
Posted: March 10, 2017 at 3:03 am
Technology is pervasive in the fitness industry. While most people dont think of workout equipment as technology, they can indeed be considered machines that enhance the quality of human activity. The industry is shifting away from these rudimentary tools and leveling up to higher tech solutions that do a better job of improving the body and the mind as a complete unit.
Data from Statista shows that the sporting equipment industry hit $5.12 billion in revenue last year, and everything is pointing to continued growth in 2017. The overall fitness and wellness industry is a much bigger generator of revenue, coming in at over $542 billion.
There is also growing trend of companies offering workplace wellness technologies and programs that are helping achieve, on average, a 6 percent reduction in attrition, with some companies like SAS and Biltmore reporting closer to 10% reduction.Todd Musgrove is an expert in the intersection of fitness and technology. Coming from a background creating apps for fitness, Todd now works as the Chief Strategy Officer for Kenzai,an online fitness platform that incorporates mindfulness and community in its home workout experiences.
He shares, Technology and the internet have made it easier to bring together people and information to develop more comprehensive programs that allow real people to connect, train in the same program, and achieve results together.
Services like Kenzai that provide at home solutions on a subscription basis are becoming more popular with consumers. Many have become frustrated with the one-size-fits-all approach that many home exercise videos and programs initially provided, and are searching for more customizable experiences that match their needs. Musgrove explains that the benefit of online fitness platforms is that, People can train anywhere with an internet connection. Since we function online, we are also able to help people utilize personalized diets prepared by a professional nutritionist. These are services that are difficult for traditional gyms and programs to provide due to the overhead involved with employing similar experts in a single location.
Before wearables, the only way to effectively measure your heart rate during a workout was to hop on a smart treadmill at the gym. Today more than 20percent of Americans have smartwatches or other fitness trackers that help them track biometric data all day, according to research from Forrester. The popularity of these devices is helping users better track and evaluate their performance, making gym visits less important to their overall fitness journey.
Musgrove shares, Genetics and medical testing to tailor exercise and nutrition are coming into practice, and were looking at opportunities to integrate it as it evolves to develop more personalized experience. With the growing popularity of DNA mapping services provided by companies like 23andme and Ancestry, the number of consumers interested in finding out how their genetic makeup impacts fitness will grow in coming years.
It may seem peripheral to the more fitness specific technologies listed above, but its important to consider the impact social media tech is having on the fitness industry. Photo and video sharing platforms are making a trend out of posting your fitness efforts. Social challenges on Facebook drive accountability for participants, and the opportunity to snapchat your run and share it with all your followers is motivation for anyone that wants to be perceived as fit.
These technologies have given rise to more workout programs like mud runs, and other experience-based races. As these companies develop new products like Snapchat glasses that make it even easier to share, people will become more intentional about sharing their workouts.
More and more consumers will be looking for ways to use technology to enhance their fitness efforts in 2017. As a result, fitness companies need to adopt developing tech quickly to reach more customers. Especially those that are digital natives. Trainers also need to consider how tech solutions can support their business, and leverage the growing trend of at-home workouts. As fitness tech improves, the hope is that people will be even more effective with their fitness efforts, achieving a healthier and happier 2017.

Design and technology GCSE axed from nearly half of schools, survey finds – Telegraph.co.uk
Posted: at 3:03 am
Design and technology GCSE has disappeared from nearly half of schools because teenagers no longer like making things, a survey has found.
Hundreds of schools across the country have axed the subject from the curriculum in the past year alone, according to a poll of teachers conducted by the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL).
Julie Nugent, chief executive of the Design and Technology Association, said the survey results were worrying, adding that they have been inundated with phone calls from concerned parents whose children are not able to take up the subject because their school no longer offers it.
We know that the subject itself suffers from a bit of an image problem, people see it as a craft based subject, where you just make a bird box or something like that, she said.
The most recent figures released by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) revealed a ten per cent decrease in the number students taking design and technology as a GSCE.
Ms Nugent said that the decline began with the Labour governments removal of the requirement for pupils to study design and technology at GCSE in 2004, but has accelerated in recent years following the introduction of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) which focuses on a narrow curriculum made up solely of core academic subjects.

How technology exacerbates the winner-takes-all effect – Spectator.co.uk

I was exchanging emails with someone the other day and signed off with the sentence let me know when you are next in London or words to that effect. It then occurred to me that I had absolutely no idea where in the world my correspondent lived. This interested me. Because it occurred to me that I could write the sentence next time you are in London to more or less anyone in the world without it sounding ridiculous. Of how many other cities is that true? New York, certainly. But then it gets difficult. Paris or Singapore? Well, at a pinch. It wouldnt work for Perpignan, say, or Bourton-on-the-Water.
This thought experiment helps explain why the many people (including me) who once naively assumed that the internet would make geographical location irrelevant have seen ourselves proved diametrically wrong. (In the late 1990s a shrewd friend of mine in Palo Alto even bought a secluded lakeside plot in the Rockies on the assumption that in ten years time he could live there more or less permanently: no such luck.)
In fact digital connectivity increases rather than reduces the drive towards urban concentration. By greatly extending the range, ease and frequency with which people can form networks, it increases the number of people who need to meet each other in person: such meetings increasingly concentrate in the worlds few megahub cities. So the draw of London is magnified still further.
This distortion happens at a smaller scale everywhere, of course. If you have two offices, with ten employees in Liverpool and six in Preston, you will find that over 90 per cent of all meetings take place in Liverpool. But at a larger scale things get more extreme.
When technology and globalisation break down the buffer of geography entirely, the winner-takes-all effect intensifies. An early manifestation of this came with the invention of the gramophone: in an era of live performance, there was a good living to be made as the fifth best tenor in Denmark; when the gramophone appeared, one man, Caruso, earned the lions share of worldwide royalties.
If you ever wondered why so many of the worlds packaged goods brands have their origins in the American Midwest of the late 19th century, its the same effect at work. Before the advent of the railways, the United States was home to thousands of smaller regional brands. The railways killed this diversity, with the winners overwhelmingly being manufacturers close to the rail hub in Chicago.
Such power laws are sometimes described as the Pareto Principle or the 80:20 rule, the maxim being that, say, 20 per cent of a companys customers account for 80 per cent of its sales, or that 20 per cent of a countrys citizens typically own 80 per cent of the land. But this understates reality. In reality the three most successful tenors might earn 95 per cent of recording fees. Or, as happens now, two or three European cities might attract the majority of overseas property investment. Whats wrong with Lisbon or Rome?
Likewise, the mean salary of an author hasnt changed much since the 1950s. That sounds reassuring until you remove J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown from the total. Every other author is poorer in adjusted terms than their 1950s equivalent.
If the world seems increasingly mad to you, spare a nod for Vilfredo Pareto, after whom the effect was named. Unusually for an economist, he did at least live in accordance with his theories: his final years were spent secluded in an Alpine chalet with a mistress and 20 Persian cats. My guess is that he started off with five mistresses and 100 cats before deciding that 20 per cent of these would give him 80 per cent of the pleasure.

Why Stratasys, International Game Technology, and Momo Slumped Today – Motley Fool
Posted: at 3:03 am
The bull market in stocks has now been running strong for eight full years, and investors who have seen major market benchmarks triple from their 2009 lows were in a reasonably good mood on Thursday. Stocks didn't move much, with the Dow rising just 3 points on the day, as a generally favorable market environment was tempered somewhat by declines in U.S. crude oil prices below the $50-per-barrel level.
Yet even though the overall market remained resilient in the face of some threats to positive sentiment among investors, some stocks posted substantial losses. Stratasys (NASDAQ:SSYS), International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT), and Momo (NASDAQ:MOMO) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we'll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.
Shares of Stratasys dropped 9% after the 3D printing specialist released its fourth-quarter financial report. The company said that revenue rose just 1% from year-ago levels, and although it managed to post an adjusted profit of $0.15 per share during the quarter, 2017 financial guidance wasn't quite as upbeat as investors would have liked to see. In particular, Stratasys expects revenue of $645 million to $680 million this year, and even after adjusting for extraordinary items, adjusted net income of just $0.19 to $0.37 per share was also well below the consensus forecast among those following the stock. The promise of 3D printing hasn't translated into lasting gains for investors in Stratasys, and some believe that it won't be able to rebound from share-price declines of roughly 85% since 2014.
International Game Technology stock plunged 15% in the wake of the company's fourth-quarter financial report. Total revenue for the quarter was down 3% from year-ago levels, but a big foreign exchange-related gain helped IGT triple its GAAP net income compared to the fourth quarter of 2015. Even after adjusting for one-time items, IGT's bottom line was up more than 40%. Yet investors seem increasingly nervous about International Game Technology's outstanding debt, which includes more than $520 million in senior notes coming due next year and a total of more than $3.8 billion in notes and term loan facilities with maturities of 2020 or earlier. If interest rates do indeed go up from here, then the financing costs associated with IGT's debt could become increasingly difficult to maintain, and that could cause problems for a stock that has been performing extremely well over the past year.
Finally, shares of Momo finished down 12%. The Chinese social networking platform company had been on a huge tear higher after reporting favorable financial results earlier in the week, but on Thursday, investors decided that the stock had run too far, too quickly. Nevertheless, many investors remain extremely positive about Momo, which combines location-based services with social offerings to allow users to meet more easily. In addition, Momo has joined other social media stocks in offering services like live video and mobile marketing, and with expectations for sales to quadruple in the first quarter of 2017 compared to year-ago levels, the Chinese mid-cap could easily keep climbing from here. Moreover, even with today's drop, Momo is still up more than 10% just this week.
Dan Caplinger has no position in any stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool recommends Stratasys. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Ex-NHLer Craig Cunningham makes amazing progress after leg … – FOXSports.com
Posted: at 3:03 am
One of the most emotional stories of this hockey season was that ofCraig Cunningham, who collapsed on the ice before an AHL game late last year.
Cunningham, who spent time in the NHL with the Bruins and Coyotes, went into cardiac arrest just prior toa Tucson Roadrunnersgame in November. His hearted stopped beating for two days before doctors were able to save his life through a complicated procedure that involved a ventricular assist device and an oxygenator that served as an artificial lung.
That procedure affectedhis circulation, resultinginCunningham losingpart of his left leg, ending his playingcareer.
Despite the amputation, many people close to Cunningham have relayed that the 26-year-oldhasremained in good spirits and is just thankful to be alive. On Wednesday, it was also revealed that hes making outstanding progress in his rehabilitation.
TSN reporter Ray Ferraro shared thisvideo of Cunningham walking on his prosthetic leg with the help of a walker.
It obviously cant be easy for a pro athlete to have their lifetime passion and livelihood taken from them in such swift fashion, especially the wayit was taken from Cunningham. But its pretty inspiring to and uplifting to see how he seems to be making the most of the tough hand that was dealt to him.
Heres hopingCunningham will make his way back to full healthand find a way backinto the hockey world.

Education Department reports progress in improving reading for K-3rd grade – Radio Iowa
Posted: at 3:03 am
Amy Williamson
The Iowa Department of Education released a policy paper today which shows the statewide effort by Iowa schools to catch and correct reading problems in students early on is showing progress.
The paper says nearly 9,000 students in kindergarten through third grade who had fallen short of benchmarks in reading in the fall of 2015 met or surpassed benchmarks by the spring of 2016, an increase of 4.2 percentage points.
The Ed Departments Amy Williamson oversees the Bureau of School Improvement. She says the early warning system implemented in 2014 is a key part of helping kids improve their reading.
What we are doing is measuring something that teachers can use on a three-times-a-year basis,or even progress monitor on a weekly basis with universal screening assessments, Williamson says. That has to be something that can be done quickly and detect very fine increments of progress. Williamson says it gives a much better picture of whats happening with students than the annual assessments.
She says the annual assessments are like a weight loss plan where you dont weigh yourself every day and see changes by the ounce. But she says they have to see fine increments on a weekly basis to change the reading instruction.
The 398 public and non-public schools using the early warning system saw a nearly 61 percent increase in the percentage of students in kindergarten through third grade that were at or above the state benchmark for reading.
Jane Lindaman
Waterloo saw the biggest increase among urban districts at 14.6 percent from the fall of 2015 to the spring of 2016. Jane Lindaman, the districts superintendent, says it has been a group effort. There is not doubt that the district, the implementation, the buy-in from the teachers, the leadership matters. And so when people believe in the system, when they believe in kids and they are tracking it all along the way I think it is truly about the work ongoing, Lindaman says.
She says getting kids to become better readers goes beyond trying to meet some state requirement. For us it is not just something that we do for compliance, Lindaman says,we dont just do it and then turn in the scores and have then have the state look at them. For us in Waterloo it doesnt have much to do with the state at all. It has everything to do with our Waterloo kids.
Lindaman says parents are also coming along. I would say that right now our parents probably have more questions that answers, but they are asking the questions, which is part of the process, Lindaman says. So they are starting to say how does this work? And so we are along the journey, we are down the road a little bit on our working with parents and letting them know. They fit in because they can support the work at home, but right now we need them to understand where they students are and what the school is doing to help them improve.
Tynne Sulser
Centerville third-grade teacher, Tynne Sulser, says the last 3 years of implementing the program have been a learning experience for her as a teacher.
I thought that I was doing the best that I could. And it turns out I needed to look at what I needed to do in the classroom and I did need to make changes in my core instruction, Sulser says. And by doing that I cannot tell you, it brings tears to my eyes the first time my kids they were so excited, they were self-confident. These are kids who struggle in reading every single day.
She says shes seen improvement in the kids who struggle the most. They may be a lot lower than proficiency and so when they are gaining 40 correct words per minute in 2 months, 3 months, and they are still not proficient you cant ask any more for that child, Sulser says.
Sulser says the kids gain confidence in the progress they have made and it will continue. You just keep on going and you keep on going and that confidence is going to get them there, Sulser says. It might not be in third grade, but its going to be in fourth grade.
Increases in the highest-growth school districts ranged from 19 to 32 percentage points. Iowas early literacy law passed by the Legislature in 2012, focuses on making sure all students are proficient readers by the end of third grade.

NAACP leaders worry Iowa Legislature reversing progress, recall "Jim Crow" laws – DesMoinesRegister.com

Iowa NAACP officials are worried about the Iowa Legislature's agenda in 2017, warningit could reverse decades of racial progress and that some legislation is forcing them to recall "Jim Crow" laws that enforced racial segregation in the South.
About 30 members of the National Association for the Advance of Colored People met with lawmakers at the Iowa Capitol Thursday for the nonpartisan organization's annual lobbying day. NAACP leaders were careful to avoid criticizing any political party or individual legislators, but they expressed concerns about a host of bills, including voter identification legislation, a so-called "stand your ground" gun rights bill, along with proposals to have state government overridelocal efforts to increase the minimum wage andto prohibit efforts to expandlocal civil rights laws.
African-Americans in this country have a history steeped with barriers," said Betty Andrews, of Des Moines, president of theIowa-Nebraska NAACP State Area Conferences of Branches. Wespeak up here to remind our legislatorsthat this house does indeed belong to the peopleof Iowaand that all Iowans, includingthose of a darker hue, must be heard.
Andrews describedthe voter ID bill, which passed the House Thursday, as a "reincarnated poll tax and literacy test," reminiscent of the old South. Voting is a constitutional right, she told reporters, questioning why barriers would be placed in the way of African-Americans who want to cast their ballots.
The "stand your ground" law, she added, creates fear among black Iowans who are concerned it could be cited as justification to shoot them. The measure would allow Iowans to use deadly force without retreating.
Andrews said lawmakers passed their first legislative deadline without advancing a bill aimed at addressing racial profiling in Iowa. Butshe is hopeful the issue will be studied after this session and then be considered in the 2018 session. The issue is significant, she said, because blacks represent only about 3 percent of Iowa'soverall population, but about 26 percent of the state's prison population. She thanked Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, for his work on the racial profiling issue.
Russell Lovell, a Drake University Law School emeritus professor and civil rights lawyer, noted that Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds have pledged to help efforts to employ more minorities and disabled people in Iowa. But he said there is an urgent need to address situations where Iowa employers are excluding job applicants with criminal convictions. People with jobs are much less likely to become involved again with the criminal justice system, he said.
Lovell also expressed concerns about clean water and he suggested that legislation aimed at dismantling the Des Moines Water Works is being pursued in retaliation for the Water Works' federal lawsuit intended to protect drinking water for central Iowans.
Arnold Woods Jr., president of the Des Moines NAACP organization, said African-Americans in Iowa are concerned about losing some of their basic rights and freedoms. His worries were shared by Dedric Doolin, Cedar Rapids NAACP president, who said Iowa has a long history of racialprogress, but all Iowans must be heard for the state to remain a leader in civil rights.

One of Trump’s treasury assistants is a survivalist who invented a bizarre techno-bow – The Verge
Posted: at 3:01 am
Yesterday, ProPublica published a massive list of Trump administration officials, including over 400 names. Among the individuals it highlighted is a man named Jon Perdue, a special assistant at the Treasury Department. Perdue is the author of a book on the nexus of Latin American radicalism and Middle Eastern terrorism and a member of a relatively obscure think tank. Hes also a self-described expert in guerrilla warfare who invented a survivalist gadget bow to use after the apocalypse.
The product in question is called the Pack Bow, and it was apparently featured on CNBCs Make Me a Millionaire Inventor in 2015. Its site is currently accepting preorders in the form of mailing list signups, and yes, thats the only shot we could find of the Pack Bow in action above. The sites ad copy is like the start of a D&D session set in Cormac McCarthys The Road.
The worst has occurred. You always knew it was possible, but never dreamed it would happen so soon. The power grid is down, and you are surrounded by chaos. Theres not much time you can only grab a handful of things, so as you head out the door, you grab the Pack Bow.
Not only is it a bow (with a self-containing quiver), its a compass, adjustable hanging rod, tent pole, walking stick, fishing pole, spearfishing rig and is wrapped in paracord. It also holds emergency supplies like bandages, matches, and water purification tablets so that when you need them, and you likely will, youll be prepared.
You never know whats ahead. With the Pack Bow you have a better chance of surviving it.
Theres also a helpful diagram.
Few of us at The Verge would describe ourselves as experts on survivalism, guerrilla warfare, and archery. But we do love gadgets, and we have questions.
While were pondering these, you can enjoy some of the incredible feats of archer Lars Anderson, a man who unlike this bow we would 100 percent pick for our apocalyptic RPG party.

South London’s Phobophobes Share Sinister New Music Video – Broadway World
Posted: at 3:01 am
Ahead of their single launch show at MOTH Club on March 13th with Dead Pretties, South London's Phobophobes have shared a mesmerising new video, led by interpretive dance, for their forthcoming 7" 'The Never Never', due for release this March 24th via Ra-Ra Rok Records.
Featuring "threatening interpretive dance, petrifying purple smoke and a solid dose of primordial goo" according to Notion Magazine, 'The Never Never' director Tuixn Benet explains:
"Jamie [Taylor, guitar/vocals] asked me to do a video for 'The Never Never'. He said he imagined choreography in it, even though no-one else did, and I guess that's why he chose me. I agreed with him instantly, it's the kind of beat I like to dance to, not too fast, not too slow, and it allows the kind of weird, punky moves I love. We shot everything in a day and a half in Imagina-Mediapro studios in Barcelona with a wonderful team that did a great job."
Watch 'The Never Never' on YouTube - https://youtu.be/qQnwpiwjMM8
Following previous single 'Human Baby', an elegy to Phobophobes' late guitarist George Russell that was played every day for a week on BBC 6Music, 'The Never Never' arrives an ode to the precarious survivalism of society's most disenfranchised. Swirling through repetitive slogans, rubbishing the adverts that promise a life we can't really afford as pastiche, and asking earnestly, "what separates those treading water to survive from the religious idols who struggled so similarly?"
In the wake of a tumultuous 2016, Phobophobes continue to forge their own path, taking whatever's thrown at them and squeezing every ounce of inspiration from it. It's the only way they know. Frontman Jamie Taylor has built studio space wherever he's roamed, from Paris to Peckham to Primrose Hill. Even Pittsburgh, Iowa, Palm Beach and New York whilst working on a touring art exhibition across America, setting up a studio in each hotel room to work on new tracks. Even when invited to Abbey Road Studios to record with Ken Scott (Bowie, Lennon, the list goes on), bass player at the time, Elliot, took swabs of their oldest microphone and grew bacteria in petri dishes, the results of which are immortalised in Phobophobes' artwork and in the centre of their 7"s.
This boundless DIY mentality echoes through Phobophobes' every move. Having now found home in the basement of The Brixton Windmill, the nucleus of South London's gig circuit where Phobophobes record, rehearse and also put on their own shows, playing alongside Shame, Goat Girl, Meatraffle, The Fat White Family, Childhood and countless others, they remain progenitors of the scene.
Following a single launch show at London's MOTH Club, Phobophobes will tour the UK with LIFE through April on the dates below. The band are currently readying their debut full-length album and will release 'The Never Never' on 7" vinyl this March 24th via Ra-Ra Rok Records.
