Yes, free speech for fascists a confession – Learn Liberty (blog)
Posted: March 11, 2017 at 7:58 am
Last week when one of my students caught sight of me approaching on a campus walk, he pulled out his smartphone to show me a picture he had taken. Look at this, he said, disgusted, it was in the Liberal Arts building. The picture showed a hand-lettered sign, hung over an atrium railing, that read, No free speech for fascists.
Because I care intensely about free speech, especially in a university, and more especially still in my university, I was sorry and angry to see the sign. It pained me that shutting down the opinions of others, even fascists, should be publicly advocated.
I tore it down, my student said.
Good for you, said I.
Was I right to say that? Was my student right to tear down the sign? I dont think so. Im ashamed of it now.
The lights came on for me when I told a colleague about the incident a couple of days later. Something in his tone when he asked, He tore it down? gave me pause.
For the first time, I questioned the act. I saw myself in a contradiction. The sign had urged silencing fascists. I hold fascism to be contemptible and wrong, but I believe fascists should be allowed to express their mistaken ideas as freely as anyone else. And that sign was attacking freedom of expression. The signs message was wrong.
But the sign was expression. And my student had silenced it. And I had approved. We were both wrong to do so.
Free expression is so important that we must tolerate even the expression of opposition to free expression. The proper response to bad speech is better speech, not shutting it down.
So what should my student have done? Next to that sign that read, No free speech for fascists, he should have posted another with an arrow toward the first, saying, Free speech for all, even those who are wrong, like fascists and the person who posted this sign.

Stand up for everyone’s freedom of speech – STLtoday.com

Once in America, people stopped and listened to what others had to say. Once, freedom of speech was for everyone. Now the norm is to shout at people, interrupt them, call them names, bully them, censor them, threaten individuals' livelihood/reputation, berate them on social media, close ones mind before you have all the facts, or just dont bother to listen, all because they hold a different opinion.
Contrary to what some think, the Constitution has not changed. Freedom of speech is not based on gender, religion, race or even political party. It guarantees that each of us has the right to be ourselves, to have our own opinions and to voice those opinions. Nowhere does it state that if you dont think like or hold the same opinion as me, you are stupid, you should shut up, or you dont belong.
Citizenship in America isnt easy. You need to stand up and fight for what is right. You need to defend everyones right to free speech, even the opinions of those who you disagree with. You need to make your voice heard by communicating with those elected or by getting involved in our political system. You need to be civil.
I realize that there are those who hate that America is made up of different cultures, races and religions. I realize that these individuals not only fear the freedoms we have but would like to take it all away. But this should not stop us from exercising our rights and freedoms. What it means is that we need to stand up for what is right, and defend her against those who would deny these rights and freedoms both here and abroad. And to those who disagree with all that I said, I will defend your right to disagree.

The KKK Canary: How We’re Losing Our Freedom of Speech – Observer
Posted: at 7:58 am
If Pastor Martin Niemllers poem First They Came was rewritten for todays free-speech battles, would the Ku Klux Klan be in the first line? Its hard to think of a more unsympathetic group, yet tyranny often starts small, sometimes targeting first those that are liked the least. A current court case involving the KKK serves as a warning: We are slowly, incrementally losing our freedom of speech.
At issue is the story of 22-year-old William D. Schenk, who spent five months in a Vermont jail after leaving Klan recruitment fliers at the Burlington homes of two women, one black and one Hispanic. Authorities accuse him of targeting the ladies, and in April 2016 he pleaded no contest to two counts of disorderly conduct, enhanced by a hate crime penalty based on prosecutors belief that Schenk was motivated by the victims race, reported the Burlington Free Press.
This plea was entered, however, under the condition that Schenk could appeal a judges decision to not dismiss the charges. That appeal is now being heard by the Vermont Supreme Court.
Unsurprisingly, the facts of the case are in dispute. Schenk claims he distributed the fliers to 50 homes; police say they found no recipients but the two minority women. Deputy Chittenden County States Attorney Aimee Griffin said it could be inferred that he targeted the women; Associate Justice John Dooley noted that theres no evidence Schenk knew the two women were minorities.Schenk is a North Carolina native and states that he conducted a similar recruitment drive in his home state.
Whats not in dispute is that if Schenk had been recruiting for the Republicans or Communist Party USA, he never would have landed in the dock. As the Vermont chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)put it in papers filed on his behalf, [T]he government seeks to punish Schenk based solely on the content of his speech.
Furthermore, ACLU Staff Attorney Jay Diaz wrote in a prepared statement that while his organization considers the KKK a despicable hate groupthe Constitution does not allow the government to pick and choose which speech it will permit.
Another troubling aspect of this case is prosecutor Griffins insistence that, somehow, a government inference of motive makes otherwise lawful speech a crime. Its reminiscent of how the courts inferred that President Donald Trumps initial travel ban unfairly targeted Muslims based partially on comments he made in the past, on the campaign trail.
In other words, increasingly, the state is not judging acts and policies on their substance, but on what it divines their actuators motives to have been. But is this a government of laws or a sideshow telepathist routine? Its the thought that counts only applies to disappointed gift recipients.
Addressing the dangerous precedent suggested by Griffins inference that Schenk targeted the women, Associate Justices Harold Eaton and Marilyn Skoglund both asked whether, under Griffins argument, anti-abortion groups that distribute fliers to pregnant women could face charges, reported Seven Days.
Griffin rejected the analogy, stating that the KKKs history of violence created a more profound threat. Of course, given that left-wing groups have often unfairly, but successfully, portrayed pro-lifers as historically violent, the judges question was apt.
Lets try this on for size: What about Marxists putting recruitment literature on bankers stoops? Given that communists murdered 94 million people during the 20th centuryand target capitalists in particularcould we view this as a hate crime? And what if the New Black Panther Party put fliers on whites doorsteps?
Upon accepting the precedent that government can stifle speech based on content and motivation, playing mind reader, who will be allowed to say what would be determined by political favor.
Is this even remotely responsible, undermining our constitutional freedoms in the name of stifling the speech of a scorned and reviled .001 percent of the population? The First Amendments purpose is to protect unpopular speech; popular speechs popularity is usually all the protection it needs.
The Schenk case reflects the increasing acceptance of the notion of actionable hate speech, something explicitly criminalized in other Western nations. With hate always defined to be, quite curiously, synonymous with political incorrectness, such laws have claimed victims ranging from politicians to pundits to performers to pastors to peons, all targeted mainly for criticizing Islam and, less frequently, homosexuality. Worse still, were on the road to embracing these laws ourselves.
The problem began when the term hate speech originated (circa 1990) and then was cemented in our culture as a separate category of speech (years later). People would say things such as, to use the example of attorney Gloria Alreds hysterical 2006 shriek about a comedians epithet-laced, on-stage meltdown, This is not free speech; this is hate speech!
If you continually differentiate hate speech from free speech, people will begin to view the former as a separate species of speechnot protected by the First Amendment.
Now, for just about as long as weve had the hate-speech species, weve punished it situationallywhen associated with hate crimes. Consider: Something is generally identified as a hate crime by way of whats expressed during its commission. An example is assaulting somebody while directing racial epithets.
Its also considered an aggravating factor. For instance, if the assault would normally involve only four years incarceration, the hate-crime enhancement might bring an additional six. In other words, were already punishing hate speech within a certain context.
The problem is that upon establishing hate speech as a category and punishing it within one context, its just a short leap to punishing it within other contexts.
The Schenk case represents this (d)evolution. Where once the speech had to be uttered during a crime to implicitly be deemed unlawful, now the speech alone may be considered unlawful when directed at a certain type of person.
None of this is any surprise, with politics being downstream of an ever-degrading culture. When I was in elementary school we still heard the rhyme, Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. Oh, words can hurt feelings, draw tears or even start wars, but thats not the point. The saying instilled tolerance for unwelcome speech, a prerequisite for maintaining respect for free and open discourse.
Its clear that todays kidser, snowflakes, dont hear the rhyme much anymore. Instead, their fragility is nurtured as theyre taught about triggers, microaggressions, or whatever is the latest Oh, the humanity! term describing things that just shouldnt offend their ethereal ears. They are provided safe spaces where, at least momentarily, their delusive bubble wont be burst. Is it any wonder they want to turn the whole country into a safe space? (This recent survey finds growing intolerance for controversial speech among the young.)
It should be mentioned that hate-speech prohibitionswhether foreign laws or domestic campus codesrarely affect Klansmen, partially because there are so few Klansmen. Rather, they mainly stifle substantive debate over Islam, race, immigration and fashionable sexual agendas. Theyre also dishonest: Their main focus isnt hate, but what the Thought Police hate.
A good way to start draining the legislative swamp is to get the government out of the doubleplusgood thought business and rescind hate-crime law. Barring this, all we can do is ask: Whose principles will become tomorrows hate?

Freedom of speech is a precious right – Fort Madison Daily Democrat
Posted: at 7:58 am
A lot of folks in our society today dont seem to respect or fully understand our constitutionally protected right of free speech.
Ideologically-driven leftists who refuse to let those with whom they disagree speak at university/college campus events, town hall meetings, and other public venues epitomize that selfish lack of respect. And there are often no negative, personal consequences for their impudent (sometimes violent) behavior.
Fortunately, the silent majority prefers a saner society and wants no part of any movement that promotes and/or tolerates such flagrant disregard for constitutional principles (including the right to peaceably assemble, which does not cover looting, destroying property, throwing rocks at cops, etc.). Leftists will continue to lose support because of this.
Having the audacity to believe that none of us should be allowed to speak or write in a manner that offends others is simply delusional. Can you imagine what our society would be like if that idea were to somehow be enforced? Who would decide what is offensive? Communist dictatorship, here we come.
We should all cherish our First Amendment right of free speech. For example, I not only disagree with probably 80-plus percent of what William Windsor writes, I find much of it to be quite offensive. Does that mean I would advocate prohibiting him from expressing himself the way he does? Of course not!
Make a note, Linda Nash. Nobody can hurt my feelings (or yours) unless I (or you) allow it. Like it or not, we adults cannot legitimately blame another person for how we feel. Thats our responsibility. And nobody else can be held responsible if some adult stops talking or writing due to fear of being criticized in no uncertain terms.
Some would say that we should all be able to disagree without being disagreeable. What about those whose limited communication skills preclude their always being able to do that? Should they not be allowed to express their opinions? Walking on eggshells is (as often as not) ineffective, unhealthy, and unrealistic.
Attempts to control others via what is politely termed political correctness has been carried to ridiculous extremes by guess who? Leftists, of course. Another reason they are losing ground.
Freedom of speech is a very broad concept in America. Only certain narrowly defined categories of speech are considered illegal e.g., credible murder or terrorist threats, sedition (such cases are rare), and (sometimes) incitements to violence. Hate speech per se is actually legal.
Our First Amendment right of speech is precious. Its there to protect those with whom we disagree. And since nobody has ever had a single idea that we would all agree with, arent we lucky our constitution is there to protect us from tyrants would choose to stifle us?
A few of my favorite quotes:
If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. George Orwell
Free speech is the whole thing, the whole ball game. Free speech is life itself. Salmon Rushdie
So long as they dont get violent, I want everyone to say what they wish, for I myself have always said exactly what pleased me. Albert Einstein
Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech. Benjamin Franklin
How brave a thing is freedom of speech, which made the Athenians so far exceed every other state in Hellas [ancient Greece] in greatness. Herodotus

Pakistan’s War on Atheism – The Diplomat
Posted: at 7:57 am
On Tuesday a High Court Judge in Pakistans capital Islamabad reiterated in a hearing that blasphemers are terrorists,as a petitioner sought a ban on social media pages allegedly uploading derogatory posts against Islam and Prophet Muhammad.
Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, who has broken down in tears in every single one of the three hearings on the case this week, on Wednesday asked the government to put blasphemers on the Exit Control List (ECL).
On Thursday, Siddiqui, who has represented Islamic State-sympathizing Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Aziz in the past, said he would summon the prime minister if no action is taken against social media pages that post blasphemous content.
The Islamabad police have since registered a case against the owners of these pages. The Senate has approved a resolution demanding strict action against blasphemous content online. Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency has published ads in national dailies asking citizens to help identify blasphemers on Facebook.
During the hearing this week, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge, implied that murder would be inevitableif the pages arent blocked. He went on to add that liberal secular extremism is a bigger threat than Islamic extremism.
Pakistans interior secretary assured Justice Siddiqui that the entire government machinery would be set in motionto address the issue. This was followed by the interior minister vowing to block social media completely if the issue isnt resolved.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, in his defense, said that similar social media pages have recently been blocked and that it takes time to convince the Facebook administration to take action.
These blocked pages include Bhensa, Mochi, and Roshni, which have either been blocked or taken over by the Elite Cyber Force of Pakistan.
In January, secular bloggers and activists, many of whom were accused of being affiliated with these pages, were abducted from various parts of the country, with the well-coordinated maneuver accused of being a state-backed operation by many quarters.
While many were subsequently recovered, some fled the country immediately. One of these activists revealed on Thursday how the state had tortured him beyond limits.
Almost parallel to the activists release, the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Saeed, accused of masterminding the Mumbai Attacks, was put under house arrest. Many believe the states long overdue action against Kashmir-bound jihadists is being pushed by China, as it seeks security for the much touted economic corridor.
With the current ruling party forging political alliances with many of these jihadist groups, and the Army using them as strategic assetsfor proxy wars in Kashmir and Afghanistan, only external pressure can lead todecisive counterterror action.
But what this has meant is that both the civilian and military leaders now have to appease their heretofore Islamist allies to avoid collective backlash, as action against jihadist groups becomes inevitable. Pakistans overt war against freethinkers might just give the state the respite that it needs.
Last year, Pakistan also passed its cybercrime law, which upholds identical punishments for Penal Code violations in the cyber-sphere. This means that blasphemy would be punishable by death, even if committedonline.
The immediate impact of Januarys abductions was a mass exodus of anonymous secular bloggers from the web. Satirical publication Khabaristan Times was also banned by the PTA, while a shift in editorial policies has been visible in many online and mainstream liberal publications.
This is why Justice Siddiquis juxtaposition of liberal secular extremists and radical Islamists is critical. All state institutions echoing apologia for Islamists, and slamming secularists, is menacing for an already endangered species: the Pakistani atheist.
Delineating the ideological divide, which would result in any liberal ideals being thrown to the wolves, couldve instigated Bangladesh-like violence had Pakistani freethinkers been a quasi-significant demographic. As it is, a few abductions, and banned web pages, were enough to silence many of us.
Ironically, it is the states appeasement of radical Islam that has caused an upsurge in the number of atheists in Pakistan. This is why an official discourse on atheism has been going on in Pakistan, resulting in many expressing non-belief online, most doing so anonymously.
While one still cant officially register as an atheist, or opt for No Religion as identity for the national database, the number of atheists is believed to have increased following the advent of Internet and social media allowing isolated nonbelievers to connect.
Muslims abandoning Islam even if not their Muslim identity is a global phenomenon, and the apostasy wave is upsetting the Islamist cart in Pakistan as well.
In 2015, the hashtag #___ or Aik crore Pakistani mulhid (10 million Pakistani atheists) trended around Darwin Day, with thousands of Twitter users tweeting both for and against atheism. It trended around February 12 last year again. But we didnt see a repeat last month.
While 10 million might be significant exaggeration, a Gallup poll of 50,000 people found that 2percent of Pakistanis self-identified atheists in 2012, which had doubled from the 1percent in 2005.
Pakistani atheists a broad term encompassing agonistics, the irreligious, deists, and humanists alike have been lazily painted by the Islamists as liberals and seculars, despite the fact that many believing and practicing Muslims identify as such as well.
Muslims openly identifying as atheist in Pakistan would be an open invitation to violence, considering the states blasphemy laws are interpreted to outlaw apostasy, coupled with the National Database and Registration Authoritys (NADRA) refusal to let citizens officially change Islam as their religion. Hence, the aforementioned secular liberal label also provides refuge to the atheists.
Even so, in websites and social media pages that are critical of Islamic theology, the Islamists at the helm of state institutions have found the filter to sift atheists. Justice Siddiqui himself was quick to clarify that non-Muslims shouldnt be considered in the ongoing case against blasphemers, clearly underscoring apostates as the intended target.
And while these atheists of Muslim heritage arent an organized political entity as is the case in Bangladesh the IHCs verdict, and the capital police registering a case weeks after action against secular activists had already been taken, smacks of a thirst for blood.
Whether the episode is being staged to mollify Islamists amidst the crackdown on jihadists, or if theres a genuine clampdown against free-thought, remains to be seen. But the state seems more than willing to sacrifice its nonbelievers at the altar of its security failures.

Update on Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program – Story – KFDX
Posted: at 7:56 am
WICHITA FALLS, TX - The Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program's steering committee meets twice a year -- one of those times at Sheppard Air Force Base.
"I'm just coordinating all of the effort that all the nation and the representatives from all of the nations are doing during the meeting. We'll just discuss frankly and honestly of what the problems are and we can find a solution that speaks to all nations," Italian A.F. Brig. Gen. Vincenzo Nuzzo, Steering Committee Chairman, said.
There are 13 NATO countries involved in ENJJPT, which are responsible for guiding what the committee does.
"They fund us. They provide the leadership that allows us to determine what our training should be for our pilots that we have here. So, when we do a steering committee, the members of each of those countries will come together and meet and discuss what we have been accomplishing and what they would like us to be able to do in the future," Colonel Gregory Keeton, 80th Flying Training Wing Commander, said.
And, it is possible a new NATO partner was in attendance this week.
"The update is actually another nation, Romania, is probably coming on-board. We are very delighted about that and, you know, we have developed new and we are looking into new training programs just to keep our pilots to receive the best training as possible," Gen. Nuzzo said.
As far as what leaders think about the NATO alliance -- after questions by President Donald Trump surrounding its cost for America compared to what other countries pay.....
"I think it is vital. In my opinion, this program is an excellent example of NATO actually paying for what they do and paying their fair share. It's a great opportunity for the tax payer and the United States to share the burden with a lot of the partners that come in here because they pay for things like runway repair -- anything that we need for the program that's accomplished is paid for by partner funding," Col. Keeton.
They said a vital alliance -- with one its key programs housed at Sheppard.
Leaders predict Romania will join the training program before the next committee meeting in September. They believe that nation will make ENJJPT even stronger and secure in the future.

Trump and Merkel to talk NATO, Ukraine and climate change – Deutsche Welle
Posted: at 7:55 am
After accusing German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on the campaign trail, of "ruining Germany" by welcoming refugees, US President Donald Trump will have his first face-to-face meeting with the German leader at the White House on Tuesday.
The two are expected to discuss strengthening the NATO alliance, collaborating in the fight against terrorism and taking steps to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, White House officials said Friday.
More broadly, Trump's first encounter will be aimed at building a personal rapport with a European partner who was among former President Barack Obama's strongest allies and international confidantes, according to the officials, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity despite the president's recent criticism of anonymous sources.
They are expected to discuss Germany's level of defense spending for the NATO alliance, the Ukraine conflict, Syrian refugees, the European Union and a host of other issues, said three senior administration officials who briefed reporters.
"My expectation is that they'll have a very positive, cordial meeting," said one of the officials.
Trump has long expressed a desire for warmer US relations with Russia but some of his top Cabinet officials are skeptical.
"The president will be very interested in hearing the chancellor's views on her experience interacting with Putin," said another official. "He's going to be very interested in hearing her insights on what it's like to deal with the Russians."
NATO and defense spending
White House officials said Trump would also discuss the need for NATO members to increase their defense spending.
"We are heartened by the German government's determination to reach NATO's benchmark of committing 2 percent of GDP to defense by 2024," the official said. "The president believes that all allies must shoulder their share of the defense burden."
In 2014 NATO's 28-member countries committed to reaching the spending target within a decade but only the US and four other members of the post-World War II military alliance are in compliance.
Trump referred to NATO as "obsolete" prior to his inauguration. Buthe has since told European leaders he agrees on the "fundamental importance" of the alliance.
Last month US Vice President Mike Pence reassured European leaders on the US commitment to NATO. German MEP David McAllister told DW that Pence's words were reassuring.
Many European allies have been rattled by Trump's positive statements about Putin and next week's meeting will come amid questions about Trump associates' connections to Russia.
Climate change
The White House said Trump and Merkel might also discuss the Paris accord on climate change. Trump vowed during his campaign to withdraw from the climate agreement, suggesting that global warming is a hoax created by the Chinese.
But the administration is still formulating its policy on the issue ahead of the G7 meeting in Italy in May.

NATO – News: NATO marks International Women’s Day, 08-Mar.-2017 – NATO HQ (press release)
Posted: at 7:55 am
An organisation, society or country can only succeed if it uses the full potential of all of its members men and women, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, marking the occasion of International Womens Day on Wednesday (8 March 2017). He stressed that equal participation of men and women is a core security requirement, essential to the resilience of societies, to the effectiveness of NATO forces and to achieving and preserving peace.
NATO strongly supports the global women, peace and security agenda. The Alliance has integrated gender perspectives in its three core tasks collective defence, crisis management and cooperative security. NATO works to promote womens rights in training and operations, and in our assistance for partners, such as Jordan, Georgia and Ukraine. The appointment of NATOs Special Representative on Women, Peace and Security Ambassador Marriet Schuurman demonstrates the importance of these issues.
Today, NATO has more women in leadership positions than ever before as ministers, senior officials and military commanders. A quarter of NATO Defence Ministers are women, six of 28 NATO Ambassadors are women, and last year, the Alliance welcomed its first female Deputy Secretary General, Rose Gottemoeller. NATOs Joint Force Command in Naples is also led by US Admiral Michelle Howard, a four-star officer, and US Army Brigadier General Giselle Wilz is the first woman to head NATO HQ Sarajevo. Canadas most senior female military officer, Lt.-Gen. Christine Whitecross, is currently commandant of the NATO Defense College in Rome.
The Secretary General has highlighted that making the best potential of both men and women makes NATO stronger and better prepared to deal with current security challenges. I look forward to the day when not just a quarter but half of NATO ministers are women; I am sure that time will come, said the Secretary General.

NATO battalion will meet Polish residents: defence minister – thenews.pl

Polish Defence Minister has said that a NATO multinational battalion battle group will stop to meet with Polish citizens en-route to their destination in Poland's northeast.
The head of Poland's National Security Bureau Pawe Soloch said that the battalion, which will be stationed in Orzysz and Bemowo Piskie, both in northeastern Poland, will be officially welcomed on 13 April.
Four such battalions will be stationed in along NATO's eastern flank, including Poland, according to a decision taken at a 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw amid fears of Russian aggression following Moscow's annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014.
NATO troops will be stationed as of 1 April, Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz said, adding that Poles would soon find out about the soldiers' route to their destination in Poland's north east, because they will be stopping and meeting with residents along the way.
We want the aspect of mutual relations between NATO troops and the community to be as visible and deep as possible, Macierewicz said.
In mid-January, a brigade of some 3,500 US soldiers and over 1,000 vehicles, including Abrams tanks, Bradley military vehicles, and Paladin self-propelled howitzers arrived in Poland.
The decision to station the brigade in Poland was made separately to NATO's decision, taken last July, to deploy four rotating multinational battalions of some 1,000 soldiers each to the military alliances eastern flank. (vb)
