How the surveillance state threatens free speech | TheHill – The Hill (blog)
Posted: March 12, 2017 at 7:57 pm
What is old is new again. Government surveillance is in the news, again. The cycle started with President Trump alleging former President Obama wire tapped Trump Towers. The cycle continued when Wikileaks released a trove of documents relating to the Central Intelligence Agencys hacking tools.
Whether President Trumps allegations have merit, or whether they are baseless should not matter. Whether the CIA spied on United States citizens or whether it did not should not matter. What should concern citizens is the governments ability to spy on them.
Consumers place confidence in the ability of a manufacturer, whether Apple, Google, or others, to secure electronic devices from prying eyes. Gone are the days when secure storage meant purchasing safes, lockboxes, or lockable file cabinets. Now, secrets are hidden within complex strings of ones and zeros. The most secure electronic systems cannot offer perfect privacy, but operate to obscure meaningful data better than the competition.
Technology can help obscure meaningful information. Technology also provides government increased access to a citizens private life, habits, and private thoughts. Instead of serving warrants and physically searching houses, computers, and other tangible items, government officials can remotely install malware, access electronic devices and seize photographs, document files, and contact lists. The Vault 7 revelations, along with Edward Snowdens prior leaks, demonstrate the government can remotely activate microphones and cameras embedded in electronic devices, including televisions. The government can turn all types of devices, including televisions, into spying tools.
Assuming the government follows proper procedures, it has a number of options minimally to comply with Fourth Amendment warrant requirements if it invokes national security as an excuse for surveillance. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) provides the executive branch broad leeway when conducting surveillance for national security purposes. The first option permits the President to authorize warrantless surveillance in certain circumstances. The second options allows the Attorney General to authorize warrant applications in other circumstances.
Both warrantless and warranted surveillance are classified. FISA requires the Attorney General to submit semi-annual reports to Congress. Those reports, though, do not need to contain detailed information. The reports need only list the total number of applications, the number of applications approved, and the criminal cases where information gathered is used.
Technology does not just provide governments increased access to a citizens private information; it also provides the government the ability to conceal any unauthorized access. The government can spy on citizens without even the most savvy technology expert knowing. And if the government believes it can completely avoid detection, or make it look like a foreign government was behind a hack, why should it apply for warrants? After all, the government could attribute the information gleaned to other sources, just as it has with cell site simulators.
Government surveillance relating to national security poses a unique threat compared to other criminal investigations. The president possesses significant authority to investigate foreign threats. The exercise of that authority, though, threatens U.S. citizens First Amendment freedom of speech rights. When conducting surveillance for national security purposes, it is likely the government will both record protected speech and will use its authority to monitor groups with politically incorrect viewpoints.
Well before technology permitted widespread surveillance, Supreme Court Justice Powell wrote,
History abundantly documents the tendency of governmenthowever benevolent and benign its motiveto view with suspicion those who most fervently dispute its policies. Fourth Amendment protections become more necessary when the targets of official surveillance may be those suspected of unorthodoxy in their political beliefs. The danger to political dissent is acute where the Government attempts to act under so vague a concept as the power to protect domestic security.
Government surveillance, of political right or political left groups, makes people think twice before speaking contrary to the political establishment. State surveillance of Black Lives Matter allegedly chilled members desire to engage in political discourse about the issues of our time. Similarly, surveillance of Trump officials was used to impeach the credibility of Lt. Gen. Flynn, attack Attorney General Sessions, and generally to delegitimize President Trump. Progressive groups, right leaning groups, and individuals in the government who threaten its power are equally subject to government surveillance and potential that surveillance will be used to silence their dissent.
Government may use technological advances to operate on the edges of Constitutional permissibility. The threats government surveillance pose to First Amendment freedom of speech rights should overshadow any discussion on the propriety of the surveillance state, just as they did before the proliferation of modern technologies, such as the computer and smartphone.
The Fourth and First Amendments are inexorably linked. Ignoring one will threaten the other. In the words of Justice Powell, The price of lawful public dissent must not be a dread of subjection to an unchecked surveillance power. Nor must the fear of unauthorized official eavesdropping deter vigorous citizen dissent and discussion of government action in private conversation. For private dissent, no less than open public discourse, is essential to our free society.

Albert Einstein’s Surprising Thoughts on the Meaning of Life | Big … – Big Think
Posted: at 7:57 pm
Albert Einstein was one of the worlds most brilliant thinkers, influencing scientific thought immeasurably. He was also not shy about sharing his wisdom about other topics, writing essays, articles, letters, giving interviews and speeches. His opinions on social and intellectual issues that do not come from the world of physics give an insight into the spiritual and moral vision of the scientist, offering much to take to heart.
The collection of essays and ideasThe World As I See It gathers Einsteins thoughts from before 1935, when he was as the preface says at the height of his scientific powers but not yet known as the sage of the atomic age.
In the book, Einstein comes back to the question of the purpose of life on several occasions. In one passage, he links it to a sense of religiosity.
What is the meaning of human life, or, for that matter, of the life of any creature? To know an answer to this question means to be religious. You ask: Does it many any sense, then, to pose this question? I answer: The man who regards his own life and that of his fellow creatures as meaningless is not merely unhappy but hardly fit for life, wrote Einstein.
Was Einstein himself religious? Raised by secular Jewish parents, he had complex and evolving spiritual thoughts. He generally did not shy away from talking about religion and the possibility of the scientific impulse and religious thoughts coexisting.
"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind," said Einstein in his 1954 essay on science and religion.
Some (including the scientist himself) have called Einsteins spiritual views as pantheism, largely influenced by the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Pantheists see God as existing but abstract, equating all of reality with divinity. They also reject a specific personal God or a god that is somehow endowed with human attributes.
Himself a famous atheist, Richard Dawkins calls Einstein's pantheism a sexed-up atheism, but other scholars point to the fact that Einstein did seem to believe in a supernatural intelligence thats beyond the physical world. He referred to it in his writings as a superior spirit, a superior mind and a spirit vastly superior to men. Einstein was possibly a deist, although he was quite familiar with various religious teachings, including a strongknowledge of Jewish religious texts.
In another passage from 1934, Einstein talks about the value of a human being, reflecting a Buddhist-like approach:
The true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which he has attained liberation from the self.
This theme of liberating the self is also echoed by Einstein later in life, in a 1950 letter to console a grieving father Robert S. Marcus:
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the resta kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. The striving to free oneself from this delusion is the one issue of true religion. Not to nourish it but to try to overcome it is the way to reach the attainable measure of peace of mind.
In case you are wondering whether Einstein saw value in material pursuits, heres him talking about accumulating wealth in 1934, as part of the The World As I See It:
I am absolutely convinced that no wealth in the world can help humanity forward, even in the hands of the most devoted worker in this cause. The example of great and pure characters is the only thing that can lead us to noble thoughts and deeds. Money only appeals to selfishness and irresistibly invites abuse. Can anyone imagine Moses, Jesus or Gandhi armed with the money-bags of Carnegie?

Tensions rise between NATO allies Turkey, Netherlands – MarketWatch
Posted: at 7:55 pm
BRUSSELS A war of words between Turkey and the Netherlands escalated over the weekend, sparking a diplomatic crisis between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies ahead of critical polls in both countries.
The feud between Turkey and the Netherlands, which had been brewing for days, boiled over Saturday night, when Dutch authorities deported a Turkish minister from Rotterdam as she attempted to hold an unauthorized political rally.
Turkish reaction was swift: Government officials accused officials in the Netherlands of being fascists and Nazis. They said the Dutch ambassador to Turkey, who is currently abroad on leave, wasnt welcome back for a while, and threatened diplomatic, political and economic retaliation unless the Netherlands apologized for the incident.
Turkey is a partner. We are interested in normalizing relations but we cant be bullied, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Ruttes spokesman, Tim Versnel, said in an interview. The Netherlands would never meet Turkeys demand for an official apology, he added. The spat with Turkey, on which European countries depend to curb refugee flows from the Syrian war, comes ahead of Wednesdays Dutch elections and elections in France and Germany. In all three countries, nationalist politicians have been benefiting from anti-immigrant sentiment.

Trump, Merkel To Discuss NATO, Ukraine, Putin During Washington Meeting – RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty
Posted: at 7:55 pm
U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet in Washington on March 14, with the future of NATO and the conflict in Ukraine among the key topics.
White House officials said Trump will also seek Merkel's views on Russian President Vladimir Putin during their first face-to-face meeting at the White House.
Merkel had a strong relationship with Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, who called the German chancellor his "closest international partner."
Trump, on the other hand, once accused Merkel of "ruining Germany" by allowing in a large number of refugees, assailed Germany on trade issues, and called Democratic rival Hillary Clinton "America's Angela Merkel."
White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not address those issues, saying only there was "a lot of excitement on both sides of the ocean for this trip.
White House officials said Trump would press Germany on the need for NATO members to increase their defense spending -- something Germany has generally resisted.
They are also expected to discuss a common strategy on Ukraine.
The United States and other Western powers have imposed economic sanctions on Russia after its illegal annexation of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula and for its support of separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Trump has expressed desires for better relations with Putin, something that has caused U.S. allies to question his commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, along with his support for NATO.
White House officials said the U.S. leader wanted to hear Merkel's views on her interactions with Putin.
For her part, Merkel said on March 11 that she was coming to Washington not only as the German chancellor but as a representative of the European Union.
"I will, of course, point out that for us, our country and our membership in the European Union are two sides of the same coin," Merkel said in Brussels before her departure.
A Merkel spokeswoman said the meeting would be an opportunity for "an exchange of bilateral and international topics, and transatlantic ties, as we have always stressed, are very important."
Juergen Hardt, the German government's coordinator for transatlantic relations, told the dpa news agency that the building of trust would be Merkels main goal for the visit.
"Most important is that she succeeds in making clear that differences of opinion can be spoken on the basis of partnership, but not out of confrontation," he said.

Burden Sharing in NATO: Innovations in Shaping a Way Ahead – Second Line of Defense
Posted: at 7:55 pm
2017-03-12As NATO nations rework their defense strategies to deal with evolving threats, clearly the question is investment in relevant capabilities.
This means that although a % criterion for investment is certainly part of the equation, it is not the only criterion.
For NATO nations clearly it is the effective contribution to that nations own defense and to doing so in such a way that interoperability with other nations is enhanced both for the self defense of the nation and enhancements in overall coalition capabilities for defending against 21st century threats.
Thus, Article III investments become especially important going forward for the alliance.
Article III of the NATO treaty reads: In order more effectively to achieve the objectives of this Treaty, the Parties, separately and jointly, by means of continuous and effective self-help and mutual aid, will maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack.
In an interview last month with the Norwegian Deputy Minister of Defense in his Oslo office, Mr. ystein B, emphasized the articles importance:
Article III is the obligation to have a strong national defense and to be able to be a net contributor to security.
There is no free ride in NATO, weve all got to do our part to be able to defend each other.
It is also about relevant and effective burden sharing, namely finding ways to enhance the capability of NATO nations to operate in the extended battlespace and to share data in enhanced distributed operations with evolving C2 innovations.
The point is that there can plainly be bad investments or investments not relevant to 21st century defense, and these criteria apply to all of the NATO nations, including the United States.
There can be clearly new ways to shape burden sharing which can provide for more effective ways to augment relevant defense capabilities.
One example has been the European Transport Command, which is finding ways to share capabilities across the lift and tanking fleet to provide for enhanced support to member states.
http://www.sldinfo.com/the-european-air-transport-command-supports-red-flag-2017/
Another example might be the North Atlantic NATO members finding a way to add Triton capabilities to their force.
Two of these states are buying the P-8, namely the UK and Norway, but perhaps Canada, Norway and the UK could buy a small fleet of Triton platforms to complement their Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and to share the data and to find ways as well to shape innovative C2 methods.
Another example is provided by a recent exercise conducted in Arctic waters.
According to an article published by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence on February 26, 2017, thisexample is detailed.
During Exercise Northern Sun 17 the NATO Submarine Rescue System has been tested in Arctic waters for the first time.
This is also the first time we have flown the equipment between Prestwick and Bogen, says Commander Ian Duncan, project manager for the submarine rescue system.
350 tonnes of material has been transported from its location in Faslane, Scotland by road to Prestwick airport and flown to Evenes with the help of 7 C-17, 2 Antonov 124 and 2 A300M aircrafts. From here it was fitted to the Norwegian coast guard vessel KV Sortland, from where the equipment is being operated during the exercise.
We have two sets of rescue systems.
One of them is an intervention system that includes a Remotely Operated Vehicle. This can survey the submarine and use its arms to cut through ropes and other items blocking the submarine hatches.
The other part of the rescue system include a submarine rescue vehicle that is attached to the submarine through the escape hatch so that the survivors can climb on board as well as a set of hyperbaric chambers for treating the rescuees if needed, says Duncan.
NATO Submarine Rescue System has the capacity to rescue up to 150 personnel from a disabled submarine 600 meters under the surface.
During the exercise the participating Norwegian submarine will dive down to about 100-150 meters below the surface.
During the exercise we are testing the submarine rescue vehicle system and the hyperbaric pressure system.
Divers and medical teams from Norway, France and the UK are participating.
The goal is to demonstrate that the system works in Arctic waters.
For the personnel on the Norwegian coast guard ship it is common to operate in Arctic waters, but the personnel operating the rescue system and the equipment itself are not used to the low temperatures, Duncan says.
Every year two exercises are carried out in each of the three countries to test out the procedures.
The submarine rescue exercise Northern Sun is a very important arena for training to ensure the safety of the Norwegian submarine crews. Under normal circumstances where we have submarines present in Northern Norway, it is natural that the rescue system is tested in the same area and under the same circumstances in which the submarines operates, says Christian Berg-Jensen, who is working with submarine operations at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters.
Our expectations for the exercise are that we get to train the rescue personnel, test the vessels and train the organisation and the concept in new surroundings and conditions, making sure that operating the rescue system under winter conditions in Northern Norway becomes the least possible challenge the day it really matters, says Berg-Jensen.
The NATO Submarine Rescue System is owned by Norway, France and Great Britain.
The three countries share the costs and manage the system together.
It is the only submarine system in the world owned by many nations.
The rescue capacities can be scrambled on a short notice anywhere in the world.
Within 72 hours the first person is to be rescued from the disabled submarine.
40 divers and 24 medical personnel from all the three countries work with the rescue system.
While other submarine rescue systems can only be used on one specific ship, the NATO Submarine Rescue System can be attached to a large number of vessels.
Having a credible rescue concept for perished submarines is vital for both the Norwegian Armed Forces as a whole and the personnel serving on the boat.
NATO Submarine Rescue System is a very important capability for our ability to ensure the safety of the crews on Norwegian submarines in that it provides a significantly improved chance of survival if an accident should occur, says Berg-Jensen.

Shattered Alliance: Unpleasant Legacy of NATO’s Fast-Tracked Expansion in Europe – Sputnik International
Posted: at 7:55 pm
However, the first country ofthe former Soviet bloc tojoin NATO was de facto the German Democratic Republic in1990. By agreeing tothe reunification ofGermany, Moscow secured commitment that the West would not deploy troops onthe territory ofthe former East Germany and NATO would not expand tothe east.
Then-German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher assured his Soviet counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze: "For us, it stands firm: NATO will not expand itself tothe East."
AFP 2017/ JANEK SKARZYNSKI
Meanwhile, inthe first half ofthe 1990s, the United States and the European Union were inno haste toadmit the three former Socialist countries intothe alliance. However, finally a way intoNATO forthem was opened.
In 1997, six years afterthe dissolution ofthe Warsaw Treaty Organization, then-NATO Secretary General Javier Solana announced that the alliance decided toinvite Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary toadmission talks.
Madeleine Albright, NATO and Eastern Europe
Many Russian political analysts agree that American politician and diplomat Madeleine Albright played a key role inthe integration ofthe former Warsaw Treaty countries intoNATO.
In 1993, Albright became Washingtons Ambassador tothe UN and in1997 she was appointed asSecretary ofState.
Speaking inthe Senate inApril 1997, Albright said: "Russia would likeus tomake absolute commitments aboutthe deployment ofnuclear and conventional forces onthe territories ofnew members. But we will not compromise onthis issue," Albright said.
The State Secretary noted that the US did not plan todeploy nuclear weapons toprotect Eastern Europe. She added that NATO would not permanently station "substantial combat forces" inthe region.
First Expansion
In the second half ofthe 1990s, relations betweenRussia and the West were relatively warm and Moscow did not regard the NATO enlargement asa direct military threat. In 1998, then-Russian Foreign Minister Evgeniy Primakov said it was rather a psychological problem.
"There are some real issues, and there is also the psychological factor. It should be considered. Russia is underpressure because the alliance is expanding and nearing our borders. At the same time, the Founding Act onRussia-NATO ties helped ease tensions," Primakov said.
Moscow was concerned overthe pace ofthe NATO expansion. In fact, the admission ofPoland, the Czech Republic and Hungary was fast-tracked.
What is more, the fast pace ofintegration was dictated bythe upcoming military operation inYugoslavia. The first bombs were dropped onMarch 24, 1999, just 12 days afterPoland, the Czech Republic and Hungary became NATO members.
Moscow was outraged withNATOs intervention ofYugoslavia. Foreign Minister Primakovs plane made the famous U-turn overthe Atlantic, marking the beginning ofa new stage inRussia-NATO relations.
Bargaining Chip
In Russia, there is a common notion that NATO is a monolith organization. In fact, there have always been differences withinthe alliance. During the Cold War, its unanimity was cemented withthe "Communist threat." But afterthe Soviet bloc collapsed, NATOs unity shattered.
Sputnik/ Sergei Guneev
In the mid-2000s, Warsaw and Prague turned a blind eye onmass protests and agreed onthe deployment ofcomponents ofthe US global missile shield. Launched in2001 byPresident George W. Bush, the initiative was regarded asa threat byMoscow.
Finally, the efforts ofthe Polish and Czech government toprove their loyalty toWashington backfired. In 2009, Barack Obama became US President and adjusted the strategy towardsWashingtons allies inEastern Europe, thus, showing their real role inUS foreign policy.
"The Russia connection is simply that we're working and indeed, a number ofcountries incentral Europe are working toreset the relationship withRussia," US National Security Advisor Antony Blinken said in2009.
Thus, Washington indicated that Poland, the Czech Republic and other former Warsaw Treaty states were just a bargaining chip inUS-Russia relations.
Disputes Over Russia
Oddly enough, NATOs unity has been further undermined bythe situation aroundRussia. The Czech Republic, Hungary and Bulgaria do not want a confrontation betweenthe West and Moscow.
Moreover, Czech President Milos Zeman has repeatedly called forthe removal ofanti-Russian sanctions and underscored the importance ofdialogue withMoscow.
New Bulgarian President Rumen Radev is also known asa vocal critic ofthe Western anti-Russian approach. Despite the fact that Radev is pro-European and pro-NATO, he insists that West-Russia ties cannot be based onconfrontation.
"Bulgaria is a loyal member ofNATO and the EU. Historically and culturally, Bulgaria has always been a European country. It has chosen a stable and unswerving path ofpro-European development. We shall not stray fromit. We want toassert ourselves asa most reliable NATO partner. But that does not mean we have tobe an enemy toRussia, a country we have important economic interests with," Radev said inan interview withLe Monde inDecember.
In an interview withRT, Ivan Konovalov, a senior analyst atthe Russia Institute forStrategic Studies, noted that NATO has found itself ina stalemate.
"Western Europe and the US do not want tosponsor Eastern Europe, and Eastern Europe does not have money torestore its defense capabilities. The situation is further complicated withcalls toend confrontation withRussia," Konovalov said.
The expert suggested that Eastern European states have not gained their desired benefits fromNATO integration.
"The armed forces offormer Warsaw Treaty members are indecay. Their Soviet-made military hardware is poorly maintained, and they do not receive new equipment. Moreover, they cannot cooperate withRussia, they do not wage wars. So, it is unclear what is the reason forthem tobe inNATO," Konovalov said.

Hayden also signed a letter last August urging Americans to vote against Donald Trump. Anything Hayden says about politics today must therefore be interpreted in that context. He is hardly a disinterested observer, and clearly resents the fact that the American people ignored his unsolicited advice.
Now, Hayden tells the Business Insider that Breitbart News has an illegitimate worldview. He was apparently objecting to Breitbart News storylast week documenting mainstream media reports that the Obama administration had conducted surveillance at Trump Tower and of people connected to the Trump campaign, and that it had disseminated the products of that surveillance.
Hayden admitted that he had not examinedthose media reports themselves. Nevertheless, he attacked Breitbart, Drudge and others:
The retired four-star Air Force general said too that theres an amazing consistency on numerous subjects between the information disseminated by Russian media outlets and that of conservative American sources like the Drudge Report, radio and television host Sean Hannity, and Breitbart.
You have a Breitbart News story essentially launching the Starfleet of the federal government about one of the most horrible political scandals in American history, if true, Hayden said, adding that it was very troubling the president seeming to value Breitbart reports over data compiled by intelligence agencies.
Breitbart doesnt do any creative journalism it just moves the parts around, Hayden continued. And I havent done this personally, but Ive heard others say, when you dig into the Breitbart sources, the articles dont really say that.
They have a worldview, and they are playing with it, he said. I think its an illegitimate worldview, and I think its a non-fact-based worldview. Its a worldview in which preexisting visions seem to be being used to distort the fact pattern that exists.
The proper address for Haydens complaints is the mainstream media, and possibly the Obama administration. Regardless, the views he considers illegitimateareenjoyed by the 45 million unique visitors who read our website every month.
The fact that Hayden and other disgruntled members of the Washington establishment still refuse to acknowledge the basic validity of a different perspective outside the Beltway and the mainstream media is precisely why Trump won in November.

Quick thinking store clerk exercises Second Amendment rights when confronted by armed robber – TheBlaze.com
Posted: at 7:53 pm
A quick thinking convenience store clerk in Ohio recently used his Second Amendment rights when a would-be armed robber pulled a weapon to rob him.
According to WTTE-TV, 27-year-old Emanuel Hamm walked into the M&M Food Mart in Darbydale, Ohio, Thursday night around 9:30 p.m. with plans to rob the store. But the quick thinking clerk, who wished to remain anonymous, derailed those plans.
He pulled a gun and said give me the money, the clerk told WTTE, recounting the events.
As soon as I saw the gun, I pulled mine and I shot him, the clerk explained. That was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the gun. I thought of my kids. Somebody thought it was an easy target and it wasnt.
Surveillance footage caught the incident on tape. It shows Hamm walking into the store with one hand in his pocket. The video shows the clerk, suspicious of Hamm, put his hand on a gun in his back pocket. When Hamm finally draws his weapon, the clerk was able to draw first, shooting and injuring Hamm. Hamm is then seen scrambling for the door.
Store owner Aziz Khettab told WTTE that after his store was robbed three times last year, he decided to finally buy a gun so he and his clerks could protect the store, its customers and his source of income.
Hamm was able to get away, despite being shot in the hand. But after he appeared at a local hospital with a gunshot wound, which WTTE reports was not life-threatening, police arrested him and charged him with aggravated robbery.
Still, the store clerk told WTTE that he feels bad for injuring Hamm.
It was really tough, he told WTTE. Its not easy to shoot someone, especially with someone who never had to deal with guns.
I feel bad for him, but I didnt have a choice, the clerk explained.
Watch the surveillance footage below via WTTE:

On May 12, 2006, Kimberly Corban was asleep in her college bedroom when a complete stranger raped her.
She thought those was her last moments on earth, as he tried killing her soul by brutally assaulting her body. This assault, her 911 calland her decisions afterward changed the trajectory of her entire life.
Now, she believes your greatest courage comes from your worst struggles. She has vowed never to be vulnerable again as she has learned more about self-protection, including how to use a firearm.
With her help and courage, her rapist was caught and convicted in 2007. She has also become a role model and an inspiration to a multitude of other young people who are learning how to protect themselves.
Last week, the head-turning, entrepreneurial TurningPointUSA launched the Trigger Warning Campus Tour, featuring Corban talking about her story and what students can do. Her motto is being a victim is never a choice, but becoming a survivor is.
I dont carry because I worry about what could happen. I carry because I already know.
There are no promises once citizens learn and train how to use a firearm, but the way you train or how much you know or what you choose to carry is going to be one more tool in your toolbox, Corban says. Safety and security are multi-layered, she says, mentioning dogs, security systems, and mace.
The Daily Caller News Foundation filmed Corban at Conservative Political Action Conference after her Armed and Fabulous panel. She spoke along with Kristi McMains, Katie Pavlich, Antonia Okaforand Ashlee Lundvall.
In this interview, Corban tells how she met Kristi McMains, a Louisville attorney attacked in January 2016. The two met in 2016 at the NRA annual meeting. Kristi had been so moved by Corbans story that she began carrying a gun for self-protection only to find within weeks her life was threatened by a man with a knife. Kristi says she was alive because of Corban, who told her story and changed McMains life.
Corban says at the first meeting last year, they ugly cried. Then, at CPAC, Corban was a proud mom hearing McMains tell her story for the first time.
Corban says she avoids movies that glorify rape. She says, what its like to have your soul murdered is never accurately depicted. I dont seek out fictional depictions of it in movies because theres enough of it in real life.

How Trump’s Vow To Protect Second Amendment Is Causing … – TheStreet.com

While U.S. President Donald Trump's vow to "totally" protect the Second Amendment has eased gun owners' worried minds, his lax stance on firearms is causing a negative impact on the outdoor retail industry.
The F.B.I. said it conducted 2.23 million background checks in February, representing a 14% decline from February 2016. Background checks were down 20% in January and 17% in December, as gun owners no longer feel the need to rush to stock up on firearms as they did when former President Barack Obama was pushing for stricter federal gun laws.
During his campaign, Trump was even endorsed by The National Rifle Association (NRA).
But, as gun sales drop, outdoor retailers across the board are feeling the pressure.
Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) said on its recent fourth-quarter earnings call that its outdoor category was particularly pressured, "driven in part by a decline in hunting."
"We did say that the hunting business was difficult," Dick's CEO Edward Stack said in response to an analyst's question on individual categories. "That hunting business...it continues to struggle and struggled in the fourth quarter, both firearms and a bit from an ammunition standpoint."
Olin (OLN) , owner of Winchester Ammunition, reported a 20% slip in ammo sales in its recent fourth quarter. In a December report, Wunderlich Securities analyst Rommel Dionisio estimated that firearms sales will "likely slow" in 2017. Looks like consumers are proving his prediction right.
Gander Mountain, one of the largest outdoor retailers in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 on Friday, listing $500 million to $1 billion in assets and liabilities.
Gander Mountain, which touts itself as being "America's Firearms Supercenter," blamed its filing on slowing foot traffic. The company operates about 110 stores in 26 states in the U.S.
To combat its own slipping gun sales, American Outdoor Brands (AOBC) is trying a different tactic in separating itself from the firearms industry. For instance, it changed its name from Smith & Wesson, a brand too associated with guns.
At its investor day in January, American Outdoor said it would be expanding on acquisitions of companies that are not so heavily focused on firearms to create long-term value. The move follows its recent acquisitions of knife maker Taylor Brands and Ultimate Survival Technologies, the manufacturer of survival, rescue, life support and disaster preparedness equipment.
Shares of American Outdoor have fallen about 15% since Trump was elected to office.
