Nootropics, also known as cognitive enhancers are drugs and natural extracts that improve cognitive functions such as memory, creativity, motivation in healthy individuals. Nootropics have been availableinthe market for several decades and were made of ingredients such as multivitamins and caffeine substances that the FDA has approved as dietary supplements and classified as GRAS (generally regarded as safe). At present, these products are being repackaged, repurposed and sold to academic and professional overachievers to augment their brain function. Companies operating in this space primarily succeed as lifestyle brands through smart marketing.Howeverthey can only be recognized as healthcare brands only after they develop products that secure regulatory approval thus establishing certified efficacy and safety to their products.
Among the key applications of nootropics, memory enhancement currently holds the largest revenue share and it is anticipated that the segment will maintain its lead through the forecast period 2016-2024. Major factors favoring the demand for memory enhancing nootropics include growing awareness among students and executives about the promised benefits of nootropics, easy accessibility, and the booming market for supplements. The memory enhancing nootropic drugs enhance learning and memory effect, enhance the ability of learned behaviors to resist disruption, enhance the efficiency of your brain functions and protect the brain from chemical injuries. Memory enhancement segment for nootropics was valued at USD 391.6 Mn in 2015.

Devotees attend the religious tattoo festival at Wat Bang Phra, where they come to recharge the power of their sacred tattoos, in Nakhon Pathom province. Photos: Reuters
Deep in trances, devotees of a Thai temple charged through gathered crowds on Saturday mimicking the beasts on their tattoos.
Some had their hands curled into tiger claws, some became crocodiles, some were transformed into Hanuman, the monkey god.
The annual tattoo festival at Wat Bang Phra, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Bangkok, draws thousands of devotees every year who come to recharge the power of sacred Sak Yant tattoos.
The tattoos are inked by Buddhist monks using sharpened bamboo sticks or long metal needles. Originally etched for warriors needing protection in battle, they are also believed to bring luck and give strength.
But every year, their magic power needs to be restored at the festival, where thousands of devotees pay their respects to the temples master tattooist.
Not everyone goes into a trance. Those who do take on the characteristics of their tattoos. They try to charge toward the temple, but are held back by a wall of temple guards and soldiers.

TMS the lifeline of local trains – The Indian Express

Train management system (TMS) a digital board that provides real-time updates of traffic on the suburban system is frequently used by both Central and Western Railways.
The system, according to railway officials, aids in quick collection of information on smooth movement or disruption of trains.
A TMS board consists of station-wise details of trains leaving and entering its platforms. Each section is divided among four colours red signifies that the train has crossed the respective station, green allows movement, yellow hints at slowing down and a double yellow implies that it could soon go green.
Details of level crossings and other technical details of the track are also mentioned.
We keep track of the train system through the digital axle counters (DAC) set up on the tracks. Each movement of on a DAC signifies that the train has crossed over the respective section. Two operators are always in charge to monitor the movement of trains between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)-Kurla and Kurla-Kalyan, respectively. Any further delay in the movement of the rake makes the supervising officer take updates from the assistant station manager and inform the authorities concerned, said an official.
TMS was implemented by both Central Railways (CR) and Western Railways (WR) in 2012, at a total cost of Rs 58.76 crore. It replaced the earlier practice of listing details of train movement by having to call up station managers at frequent intervals.
On WR, the TMS records train movement from Churchgate Virar, whereas CR uses it between CST-Kalyan. We are planning on increasing it beyond Kalyan and also on the harbor line, said a senior railway official.
TMS also aids officials to decide the frequency at which mega-blocks need to be taken.
Operators in the earlier system would collect information about the departure of trains from important nominated stations. These were recorded in a pre-printed chart, where movement of services was marked after every thirty minutes. Cases of diversion and cancellations would only be informed after the operator was apprised of the same by a railway official.
Through TMS, we are able to take quick decision whenever there is any disruption. It helps us transfer services between two sections without having to take suggestions. Each detail is available to us on the board. Not only does it save up on our labour and clerical work, we are also able to make better punctuality report of train operations, the official added.
Commuters can now see the expected arrival time of trains on display boards at platforms. They are also informed about any cancellation of services through platform announcements.
For few operators at TMS, it is a challenge to be attentive yet they are in constant communication with the officials. During the recent crisis on harbor line, when services were suspended for sixteen hours, the TMS team arrived as early as 5 am to the office and worked till the problem was resolved. We are the reason behind smooth operations of a congested suburban network, said Nikunt Madhav, chief controller for CST-Kurla section.

Several tech billionaires are openly or secretely funding broadband mind computer interfacing projects – Next Big Future
Posted: at 4:33 pm
Last year Bryan Johnson, founder of the online payments company Braintree, starting making news when he threw $100 million behind Kernel, a startup he founded to enhance human intelligence by developing brain implants capable of linking peoples thoughts to computers.
Johnson isnt alone in believing that neurotechnology could be the next big thing. To many in Silicon Valley, the brain looks like an unconquered frontier whose importance dwarfs any achievement made in computing or the Web.
According to neuroscientists, several figures from the tech sector are currently scouring labs across the U.S. for technology that might fuse human and artificial intelligence. In addition to Johnson, Elon Musk has been teasing a project called neural lace, which he said at a 2016 conference will lead to symbiosis with machines. And Mark Zuckerberg declared in 2015 that people will one day be able to share full sensory and emotional experiences, not just photos. Facebook has been hiring neuroscientists for an undisclosed project at Building 8, its secretive hardware division.
Even when speaking to a computer program like Alexa or Siri, you can convey at most about 40 bits per second of information and only for short bursts. Compare that to data transfer records of a trillion bits per second along a fiber-optic cable.
Ridiculously slow, Musk complained.
But it turns out that connecting to the brain isnt so easy. Six months after launching Kernel amid a media blitz, Johnson says hes dropped his initial plans for a memory implant, switched scientific advisors, hired a new team, and decided to instead invest in developing a more general-purpose technology for recording and stimulating the brain using electrodes.
Johnson says he concluded that Bergers memory implant work is really interesting, but not an entry point into a commercially viable business.
DARPA says it is close to announcing $60 million in contracts under a program to create a high-fidelity brain interface able to simultaneously record from one million neurons (the current record is about 200) and stimulate 100,000 at a time.
Johnson declined to describe the specifics of Kernels technological approach to connecting with the brain, as did Boyden and Wentz. However, the team members have been working on well-identified problems. Wentz has been involved with developing electronics for high-speed reading of data emitted by wireless implants. Already, the flow of information that can be collected from a mouses brain in real time outruns what a laptop computer can handle. The team also needs a way to interface with the human brain. Boydens lab has worked on several concepts to do so, including needle-shaped probes with tiny electrodes etched onto their surface. Another idea is to record neural activity by threading tiny optical fibers through the brains capillaries, an idea roughly similar to Musks neural lace.
Under a concept that Boyden calls brain coprocessors, it may be possible to create closed-loop systems that detect certain brain signalssay, those associated with depressionand shock the brain to reverse them.

Ausmus says no to adding Infante to Tigers’ CF mix – Detroit News – The Detroit News

Omar Infante(Photo: Robin Buckson, Detroit News)
Sarasota, Fla. Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila, chatting informally with a group of reporters before the game Sunday, mentioned that he was intrigued by the idea of seeing Omar Infante play in center field.
You should ask Brad about that, he said, impishly.
Clearly, Avila and manager Brad Ausmus had already discussed the possibility of throwing Infante, a veteran middle infielder, into the mix in center field. And, clearly, Avila knew which side of the fence his manager was on.
Right now we have too many guys working in center field to add another to the mix, Ausmus said. Its hard enough to get Andrew Romine out there. Right now, to add another guy to the mix, let alone a guy who has never played center, is a little bit tough.
We only have so many games and there is only one center field. Its not going to happen.
The battle for the center field job remains wide open. It was muddled further Sunday with the news that Tyler Collins' lat muscle flared again. He was scratched from the lineup, where he was to bat second and play left field.
Collins was unable to play in the outfield for the first two weeks of spring training because of a lat strain. Hes day-to-day again.
Its not the same area, Ausmus said. The lat is a big muscle. This time its more toward the spine. Im not concerned now. But if he says hes healthy again and five days later it flares up again, now we may be a lot more concerned.
Non-roster invitee Juan Perez started in center field against the Orioles Sunday. Mikie Mahtook, who along with Collins are presumed to be the opening day platoon, was the designated hitter.
Perezs reputation is that hes real good defensively, Ausmus said. And we need defense in center field at Comerica Park. Hes a right-hand bat so hes another right-handed option.
Reliever Nesbitt showing flashes of springs of yore
Collins and Anthony Gose are the left-handed hitting options in center. Mahtook, JaCoby Jones and Perez are the right-handed options. Romine is a switch-hitter.
You can understand Ausmus reluctance to add another contestant to the mix.
We want to give everyone a fair opportunity and we also want to get enough information so we can make an informed decision when we decide what direction we want to go in center field, Ausmus said.
Adding Infante to the mix isnt happening. Unless Al forces my hand (wry smile). If that happens, you know my hand was forced.
Martinez update
The Tigers were still in a holding pattern regarding right fielder J.D. Martinez, who left the game Saturday with a right mid-foot sprain.
X-rays taken Saturday were negative. He had an MRI Sunday morning. Avila and Ausmus were still waiting on the results.

The Department of Health has said it expects negotiations with a drug company on treatments for Cystic Fibrosis will conclude "in a matter of weeks".
Talks on what price the Government is prepared to pay for Orkambi, Kalydeco and other treatments have been ongoing for months and many CF patients and their familieshave expressed frustration that no agreement has been reached.
In a statement, the Department said Minister for Health Simon Harris "is acutely aware that the last number of months have been a stressful and worrying time for CF patients and their families."
The statement added "the Government's priority is to achieve the best outcome for Irish patients and the health system overall."
It follows a call by Cystic Fibrosis Ireland for both sides in the talks to show generosity and to reach an agreement without further delay.

Real Madrid C.F. beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1, thanks to Casemiro and Karim Benzema goals, to go five points up in La Liga
Real Madrid C.F. went five points clear a the top of La Liga after coming through a testing game at Athletic Bilbao to win 2-1 thanks to Brazilian midfield lynchpin Casemiros strike on Saturday.
Karim Benzema fired Real ahead in the 25th minute with an exquisite first-time finish from a Cristiano Ronaldo cross after Casemiro had begun the move with a clever long ball from the halfway line.

Athletic worked hard to get back into the game and, after Real keeper Keylor Navas produced a brilliant save to deny Inaki Williams, veteran striker Aritz Aduriz headed the home side level from close range in the 65th minute.
Casemiro restored Reals lead in the 68th, however, by controlling a Ronaldos flicked header from a corner and calmly taking his time to tuck the ball into the net from close range thanks to some careless defending.

Why It’s Time to Retire the Term "Political Correctness" | Big Think – Big Think
Posted: at 4:32 pm
Adam Mansbach: You know even the term "political correctness" at this point I feel like has been compromised, has been diluted, and means different things to different people in a way that is counterproductive. I would vote to retire the term entirely. I guess where I fall is, on one hand if you are whining about the way that political correctness and some culture of respect prevents you from being an asshole, then youre an asshole. If the political correctness of the world stops you, impinges your freedom of speech and prevention from being misogynistic, homophobic, racistthen fuck you, basically. I guess thats ultimately where I fall on it.
I dont really know any artists, any creative folks who feel like some restrictive culture is preventing them from doing their art, you know. The people I see are flourishing in this space. I think respect is important. I think calling people by the words and the names and the pronouns that they choose for themselves is critical. Theres no reason in any sense to do otherwise that I can think of.
But I feel like the term itself, as far back as the 90s, was being bandied about in this spirit of mockery, and I remember books being published, like The Politically Correct Handbook and like things that just take it to a level of absurdity.
The simple ideathat people of various marginalized discriminated against groups were claiming ownership of the words used to describe themwas taken and satirized and made absurd by the right, a group of people who are not known for their sense of humor. And it became kind of a battering ram. Like Oh, you know, we cant say blah, blah, blah. And like Well you cant say short anymore, you have to say vertically challenged. And it was very deliberate.
I mean it was part of the war around language which is a very critical part of political discourse. The control of terminology is really, really important in the way that peoples views are shaped. And its something that the right has had a lock on surprisingly for a pretty long time, you know. Pro-life sounds good but isnt. But the way that the words and the phrases and the terminology shape the debate is really critical. So the term in my mind goes back to that and yeah, at this point I think we could probably put it to death and come up with something better.

EDITORIAL: Political correctness runs amok in New York – Holmes County Times Advertiser
Posted: at 4:32 pm
For those still unsure whether the nations public school system could use a reset, consider the recent news from New York.
Four years ago, the state introduced a literacy exam for prospective teachers and for good reason. Studies show that an effective, quality teacher is one of the most important factors when it comes to student achievement. They also reveal that too many education colleges accept students with subpar academic records. A 2016 report by the National Council on Teacher Quality found that 44 percent of the teacher preparation programs it surveyed accepted students from the bottom half of their high school classes, the Associated Press reported this week.
New Yorks Academic Literacy Skills Test was designed to ensure that those charged with educating the states children had acquired basic reading and writing skills.
The test results have been astounding. The AP notes that just 46 percent of Hispanics, 41 percent of African-Americans and 64 percent of white candidates passed the exam on the first try. The fact that virtually half of those seeking to become educators couldnt successfully navigate a test that the New York Post described as something a high school senior should be able to pass is another stunning indictment of teacher prep programs.
All of this, however, is apparently of no concern to New York education officials. Instead of applauding the examinations for identifying teachers who were likely to struggle in the classroom, the state Board of Regents on Monday voted to abolish the test requirement altogether thanks to the racial disparity reflected in the scores.
This is political correctness run amok. Certainly the state should strive to implement ways to improve the performance of minority candidates or to lure better minority students to the profession. But turning a blind eye to reality in an effort to promote diversity is to condemn thousands of New York kids to classrooms led by teachers ill-prepared for the rigors of the job.
Obviously, its not really about the children. Who knew?
