Under DHS new biometric monitoring system, all foreign visitors to the U.S. will be screened with facial recognition software which will check the identities of departing visitors to ensure they havent overstayed visas, arent wanted in criminal or terrorist investigations, and to confirm they arent trying to leave the country with forged documents, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Homeland Security has been screening foreigners entering the U.S. through fingerprints since 2004, but the agency has never had the security software to create a system for foreigners also leaving the U.S. as well.
DHS ran a test-run of the biometric monitoring system at Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where they successfully gathered images of passengers to verify their identities before they boarded flights.
Likewise, DHS fingerprint technology has been used at some of the countrys largest airports, but the agency has also tested a security system that captured the irises of foreigners for identification verification at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing.
As to the potential of the security system misidentifying an individual, a DHS Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokeswoman told the Christian Science Monitor that the biometric system is building upon existing operational platforms, ultimately finding a feasible solution.
The CBP spokeswoman said the agency is working with other government agencies and private industry partners to make sure the security system is as accurate as possible.
Aside from the new security technology for foreigners entering and leaving the country, the Trump Administration may still be eyeing a move to reinstate the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) program.
NSEERS was initiated after the 9/11 attacks and it tracked individuals living in the country who had come from regions of the world where terrorism is prevalent, as Breitbart Texas reported. The Obama Administration cancelled the program, claiming it unfairly targeted Muslims.
The national policy team and the incoming cabinet and administration members are spending a lot of time reviewing potential executive order actions, working through a 100-day plan for particular pieces of legislation that will be coming up, Trump transition team spokesman Jason Miller told Breitbart News at the time.

Tech industry shows little progress on racial diversity – VentureBeat
Posted: at 9:09 am
For all the talk and disclosures regarding inclusion and diversity, a new report shows that tech companies are making little headway in building racially balanced workforces.
Open MIC, a nonprofit that focuses on issues of diversity, released a study this month that showsAfrican-Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans remain dramatically underrepresented in the tech economycompared to their overall presence in the U.S. workforce. The organization is hoping to get investors to pressure tech companies to be more aggressive with their diversity efforts by making the case that this is a big loss in terms of productivity and profitability, both for the companies and the broader economy.
In a country with a population growing more diverse each day, the U.S. tech community remains a bastion of white, male privilege that has largely excluded people of color, said Michael Connor, executive director of Open MIC, in a statement. Given the growing social, political and economic influence of tech companies, the lack of diversity in the sector has implications that extend far beyond the industry itself.
According to the report called Breaking the Mold: Investing in Racial Diversity in Tech African-Americans and Latinos each represent about 5.3 percent of the tech workforce, at least 16 percentage points below their overall numbers in the general workforce.
Making this challenge even steeper: People of color working in tech report feeling isolated and discriminated against, which results in their leaving the tech workforce at a rate 3.5 times greater than that of white men.
The paper cites another study by Intel that found over the past five years, various tech companies and organizations have pledged to spend $1.2 billion on diversity programs.
Despite that spending, the Open MIC report found that over the past 15 years, racial and ethnic minorities have only seen their numbers increase by less than 2 percent in the tech sector. And in the upper ranks, the study found that only 2 percent of executives are African-American and 3 percent are Latino.
The organization called on investors to play a more active role in pressuring companies to change, citing several studies that indicate more racially diverse companies on average reported better revenue gains and profitability.
There is substantial evidence that diversity leads to stronger economic gains for companies, no matter the industry, the report says. Given the digital worlds burgeoning social and economic influence, the current lack of racial diversity in the tech industry poses serious risks for investors, the tech sector and society at large.
Finally, the report included a table of workforce diversity numbers and top tech companies, based on their own public disclosures and data from theU.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission:

Virginia lawmakers making big progress despite shorter session – The Charlottesville Newsplex
Posted: at 9:09 am
RICHMOND, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Last week's "Crossover Day" marked the halfway point for this year's Virginia General Assembly, and lawmakers say they are making great progress despite the shorter session.
Several pieces of legislation on mental health passed in both chambers before the crossover, which has been a big forefront for Del. Rob Bell (D, 58th), and Sen. Creigh Deeds (D, 25th).
A proposed amendment by Del. Steve Landes (R, 25th) that would have ended the revenue sharing agreement between the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, as well as similar localities across the commonwealth was pulled just a few days later.
Del. Bell also got his "Tebow" bill passed through the House of Delegates again, which would allow home-schooled children to participate in public schools sports.
The bill also passed the Senate last year, but was later vetoed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Lawmakers say patience makes all of the difference in shorter sessions like these.
"You don't get everything you want every time you want it," said Sen. Deeds. "It's kind of an education process [because] not everyone knows the same thing as everyone else, or feels the same way so you have to be patient and plan your work and work your plan."
Lawmakers still face the challenge of bridge the $1.5 billion budget shortfall, where they will talking about the possibilities of big cuts.
This year's session is set to close on Feb. 25.

Bluefield officials urge those that want to see city progress to take online survey – Bluefield Daily Telegraph
Posted: at 9:09 am
BLUEFIELD The City of Bluefields economic development director is urging business owners and those wanting to see the city progress to take an online survey related to an upcoming program.
Called Cool & Connected, the city recently received a grant to look at broadband service and how it can create growth in the city.
There will be community meetings in March and the city is in the process of gathering information for those meetings.
Spencer said the meetings will be held on March 21 and 22 and a conference call is set for Feb. 15 on the Cool & Connected program.
Thats why its important for more people to take the survey today and Tuesday, he added, to add input for the conference call.
You only need to take one survey, he said, adding that a community stakeholder is defined as a resident of the city with a vested interest in the success of the city.
The survey data will be vital to the success of the project, he said.
Business owners can access the survey at surveymonkey.com/r/DMDSS6L.
Government, public sector and community stakeholders can access the survey at surveymonkey.com/r/DT6DLN2.
The more people who take the survey, the more data he will have for the program, he said.
According to the online information about the program, Cool & Connected is a planning assistance program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service, EPAs Office of Sustainable Communities, and the Appalachian Regional Commission, and helps small townsuse broadband service to revitalize main streets.
Communities can combine broadband service with other local assets such as cultural and recreational amenities to attract investment and people, including young people, and diversify local economies.
Through Cool & Connected, a team of experts helps community members develop strategies and an action plan for using broadband to create walkable, connected, economically vibrant main streets and small-town neighborhoods that improve human health and the environment.

Nihilism Manticore Press

By Brett Stevens
Manticore Press, 2016
Most people see the world in binary categories. They believe that there is either an inherent moral good that we must all obey, or there are no rules and life is pointless anarchy. Nihilism argues for a middle path: we lack inherent order but are defined by our choices, which means that we must start making smarter choices by understanding the reality in which we live more than the human social reality which we have used to replace it in our minds.
A work of philosophy in the continental tradition, Nihilism examines the human relationship with philosophical doubt through a series of essays designed to stimulate the ancient knowledge within us of what is right and what is real. Searching for a level of thought underneath the brain-destroying methods of politics and economics, the philosophy of nihilism approaches thought at its most basic level and highest degree of abstraction. It escapes the bias of human perspective and instructs our ability to perceive itself, unleashing a new level of critical thinking that side-steps the mental ghetto of modernity and the attendant problems of civilization decline and personal lassitude.
While many rail against nihilism as the death of culture and religion, the philosophy itself encourages a consequentialist, reality-based outlook that forms the basis for moral choice. Unlike the control-oriented systems of thought that form the basis of contemporary society, nihilism reverts the crux of moral thinking to the relationship between the individual and the effects of that individuals actions in reality. From this, a new range of choice expands, including the decision to affirm religious and moral truth as superior methods of Darwinistic adaptation to the question of human survival, which necessarily includes civilization.
Inspired by transcendentalist thinkers and the ancient traditions of both the West and the Far East, the philosophy of nihilism negates the false intermediate steps imposed on us by degenerated values systems. In the footsteps of philosopher Friedrich W. Nietzsche, who called for a re-evaluation of all values, nihilism subverts linguistic and social categorical thinking in order to achieve self-discipline of the mind. As part of this pursuit, Nihilism investigates thought from writers as diverse as William S. Burroughs, Aldous Huxley, Arthur Schopenhauer and Immanuel Kant. For those who seek the truth beyond the socially-convenient explanations that humans tell one another, nihilism is a philosophy both for a new age and for all time.

Science: How to Get into the "Flow" and Do What Makes You Happiest – Big Think
Posted: at 9:06 am
In psychology, flow activities are ones that would presumably make us the happiest. They are activities like sports or cooking that require more work on our part but are characterized by full immersion and focus. A new paper argues that we are often faced with a dilemma - while studies show how engaging in flow activities would make us happier, we tend to spend more of our free time on passive activities, like Facebooking or watching tv.
In two studies, researchers L. Parker Schiffer and Tomi-Ann Roberts at the Claremont Graduate University and Colorado College, conducted a survey of about 300 people to find out what they thought of different types of activities. These ranged from passive like listening to music to flow-inducing like making art. As the paper explained, flow activities require clear rules, challenge, a high investment of energy.
The participants had to rate whether they found the activities enjoyable or daunting as well as how often they engaged in them. Another question related to which particular activities the participants regarded as providing lasting happiness.
The answers revealed that whatever people thought would require more effort would also bring more happiness. But people were still more likely to spend their time in passive activities because they found them easier to get into and more enjoyable. On the flip side, flow activities were seen as harder to start up, even if generally better for you. Its just easier to stay sitting on the couch than getting up to run, which might be quite tiring and even painful at first.
To be able to navigate this paradox of happiness, researchers propose techniques that could help reduce the initial effort required to get into a flow activity like going to the gym. They recommend you do things like choosing a gym near your house and preparing your workout clothes the night before. Or if you want to get into painting or have something to write - set up your writing or painting materials in advance. Just doing that much can help get the process underway and make it easy to start doing something you will find ultimately very rewarding.
The researchers also suggest using controlled consciousness - mindfulness and meditation techniques to get the ball rolling before a flow activity. While the paper advocates for future research to come up with more techniques that would help us engage in happiness-creating flow activities, they do warn that there are high stakes involved here that could prevent us from achieving happiness due to a pursuit of hedonism:
People know that flow activities facilitate happiness better than more passive leisure and yet they are not doing these activities because it seems they do not know how to overcome the activation energy or transition costs required to pursue true enjoyment. This disjunction perhaps leads us to assume that happiness is going to happen to us as an outcome of our pursuit of hedonism. Thus, we develop a more passive approach to happiness, opting for the easier pleasurable activities that require less energy and are less daunting than high-investment ow activities.

Barnaby Joyce condemns WA Liberals’ preference deal with One Nation – The Northern Daily Leader

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has condemned the Western Australian Liberal Party's unprecedented decision to preference One Nation ahead of the Nationals at the upcoming state election, a deal that has been defended by Mr Joyce's federal Liberal partners.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has condemned the Western Australian Liberal Party's unprecedented decision to preference One Nation ahead of the Nationals at the upcoming state election, a deal that is splitting opinion in the federal Coalition ranks.
Striking a different note to Liberal colleagues, former prime minister Tony Abbott agreed with the argument that One Nation leader Pauline Hanson was a "better person" today than when she was previously in Parliament but said the Nationals should be preferenced above all other parties.
While Mr Joyce described the deal as "disappointing", cabinet colleague and Trade Minister Steve Ciobosaidthe Liberal Party should put itself in the best position to govern and talked up Ms Hanson's right-wing populist party as displaying a "certain amount of economic rationalism" and support for government policy.
Mr Joyce said the conclusion "that the next best people to govern Western Australia after the Liberal Party are One Nation" needed to be reconsideredand the most successful governments in Australia were ones based on partnerships between the Liberals and Nationals.
"When you step away from that, there's one thing you can absolutely be assured of is that we are going to be in opposition," he told reporterson Monday morning.
"[WA Premier] Colin Barnett has been around thepoliticalgame a long while and he should seriously consider whether he thinks that this is a good idea or whether he's flirting with a concept that would put his own side and Liberal colleagues in opposition."
The deal will see Liberals preference One Nation above the Nationals in the upper house country regions in return for the party's support in all lower house seats at the March 11 election.
The alliance between the more independent WA branch of the Nationals and the Liberals is reportedly at breaking point over the deal, which could cost the smaller rural party a handful of seats.
"Pauline Hanson is a different and, I would say, better person today than she was 20 years ago. Certainly she's got a more, I think, nuanced approach to politics today," Mr Abbott told Sydney radio station 2GB.
"It's not up to me to decide where preference should go but, if it was, I'd certainly be putting One Nation ahead of Labor and I'd be putting the National Party ahead of everyone. Because the National Party are our Coalition partnersin Canberra and in most states and they are our alliance partners in Western Australia."
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull declined to criticise the deal, stating that preference deals in the state election were a matter for the relevant division who "have got make their judgment based on their assessment of their electoral priorities".
Mr Ciobo joined the Prime Minister and other federal Liberal colleagues in defending the WA division's right to make its own decisions.
"What we've got to do is make decisions that put us in the best possible position to govern," he told ABC radio of the motivations of his own branch in Queensland.
After Industry Minister Arthur Sinodinos called the modern One Nation more "sophisticated" now, Mr Ciobo also praised the resurgent party.
"If you look at, for example, how Pauline Hanson's gone about putting her support in the Senate, you'll see that she's often voting in favour of government legislation. There's a certain amount of economic rationalism, a certain amount of approach that's reflective of what it is we are trying to do to govern Australia in a fiscally responsible way.One Nation has certainly signed up to that much more than Labor."
When in government, former Liberal prime minister John Howard declared that One Nation would always be put last on how-to-vote cards.
