Special report for MT

Asignificant contribution tothe International Space Station, Russia's Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module, will not be delivered tothe orbital outpost before 2017, nearly 10 years past its intended launch date.

Engineers atRSC Energia theRussian state-owned company responsible forbuilding Russia's manned space vehicles were working onthe module when they discovered debris inthe engines, Interfax reported onMonday, citing asource inthe Russian space industry. Themodel was scheduled forflight this year.

TheCouncil ofChief Designers, asenior body ofRussian engineers responsible forthe Russian segment ofISS, has concluded that theextensive nature ofthe repair andrecertification process all but rule out thedelivery ofthe module tothe space station prior to2017.

Federal Space Agency chief Oleg Ostapenko said that ameeting will be held atthe end ofMay tofinalize therepair plans forthe module, but added that it is "too early totalk about timing," Interfax reported.

Thedelay marks thelatest development inthe ongoing saga ofthe module, designated Nauka theRussian word forscience. Although thecurrent design forthe module was finalized in2004 andslated forlaunch in2007, aseries ofsetbacks over theyears had pushed themodule's flight back to2014.

Themodule includes apropulsion system tohelp control the ofthe station, provide additional storage space andfuel tanks andwould add extra parking space forthe Soyuz andProgress spacecraft that routinely ferry crews andcargo tothe orbiting outpost.

Theongoing difficulties faced byNauka also present questions regarding thefate ofa long awaiting European contribution toISS theEuropean Robotic Arm which was designed tobe fitted onthe exterior ofthe module.

Thearm has been completed andawaiting launch since 2005, pending thedelivery ofNauka tothe space station.

No Real-World Solutions Met During Special Meeting On Space Debris

Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online

Humans have always been good at creating garbage. Just look around and you will find trash, junk and debris everywhere you go: landfills, waterways, city parks, neighborhood streets, forests and highways. While these are all hotbeds of man-made waste, one place in particular is increasingly becoming a huge threat to humanity and all you have to do is look up.

Space debris, or space junk, is a pressing problem for humanity both in space and on the ground. The problem is so relevant that a recent movie starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney has not only featured a devastating encounter in space but has also inspired politicians and government agencies to gather and discuss a real-world problem.

Space experts met Friday at a hearing held by the US House of Representatives to warn that space activities will become increasingly dangerous if rules are not developed to control the debris problem. Entitled Space Traffic Management: How to Prevent a Real Life Gravity, the hearing gave experts a chance to voice their concerns over the dangers of human space travel and commercial satellites that earthlings rely on for TV, communication and GPS.

While the meeting had its intentions in solving the space debris crisis, an endless array of bureaucracy kept any real-world solutions from taking place. Tight budgets, patchy international agreements, and partisan divides on Capitol Hill were the main issues keeping a clear route from taking shape.

SPACE COLLISIONS

In the film Gravity, a barrage of space debris threaten the livelihood of three astronauts who are on a spacewalk to maintain the International Space Station. In the opening scenes Sandra Bullocks and George Clooneys characters try to avoid the oncoming onslaught of junk that is raining down on them, destroying the space station, their craft and killing all those aboard.

While the movie is a fictional account, the physics behind it are all too real. The trail of space junk that affected the characters and their equipment in Gravity can probably best be described as part of the phenomenon known as Kessler syndrome. When two objects collide in orbit, they create more debris. Some of the debris created from these collisions burns up in the Earths upper atmosphere or falls to Earth. But what doesnt get eaten up by Earth continues to ride on orbit, potentially leading to more collisions, creating more debris and then creating more potential collisions, and so on and so forth; in space, this can be an indefinite routine.

NASA currently tracks about 23,000 objects in low-Earth orbit and as much as 500,000 pieces of junk drifting around space above at 17,000 mph, according to a report from Xinhuanet.

Nova Scotia woman prepared for final frontier

Posted: at 1:48 am

BARRINGTON Working 9 to 5 isnt for everyone.

Kendra Christie answers the phone at her dads Shelburne County salvage yard but pines for life in a bubble, living and working on Mars as part of a colonization team.

An existence on the red planet is now closer than ever for Christie, 29, who learned she had made the shortlist for an international space project that wants to send astronauts on a one-way trip to Mars.

She said people who know her understand why she would chuck an earthly existence for a Martian one.

Ive been like this my whole life. Ive always been a space nut.

When I get into something I get really into it, Christie said Monday.

Earlier this month, Christie learned by email that shed been shortlisted for the mission by Mars One, a non-profit organization headquartered in the Netherlands.

From 200,000 applications worldwide, she is now one of 54 Canadians, including two other Nova Scotian contenders, aiming to be part of a colonization drive by 2025, according to Mars One. The other Nova Scotians are Tyler Reyno of Lower Sackville and a woman identified as Jacqueline from Halifax.

I honestly dont think its sunk in yet, Christie said.

You had to be 18 to apply. I think theres an 81-year-old still in the running.

Russia to Begin Moon Colonization in 2030 Report

Posted: at 1:48 am

MOSCOW, May 8 (RIA Novosti) Russia has drafted a program for colonization of the moon, and plans to send the first expeditions to build a permanent lunar base in 2030, the Russian Izvestia daily said Thursday, citing an official document.

"The moon is a space object for the future exploration by terrestrial civilization, and a geopolitical competition for the Moon's natural resources may begin in the 21st century," said a report on a potential lunar program prepared by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Roscosmos space agency and Moscow State University.

The program aims to build an inhabited moon base and testing ground by the middle of the century, which would allow mineral extraction on Earth's only natural satellite.

The project calls on developing a range of long-distance space technology to ensure the country can explore the moon independently from foreign partners. Earlier proposals for lunar exploration focused on strong international cooperation, as it was believed no single country could afford interplanetary projects on its own.

Russia will plan separate three- or four-year-long lunar projects for the next 16 years, according to the plan. The first four will take place between 2016 and 2025 and will focus on defining the physical and chemical composition of the moons south pole, where the future base will be sited. Space roundtrips are scheduled for 2028-30, and manned lunar exploration for 2030-40.

The first stage will cost the government 28.5 billion roubles ($800 million), Izvestia said.

Previous lunar expeditions, which started with the USSR's Luna program in 1959 and the US landing the first man on the Moon 10 years later, discovered aluminum, iron, titanium, rare earths and other minerals.
