TROPICS THREE AREAS OF POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT OUT THERE IN THE TROPICS RIGHT NOW ONE OF THEM PRETTY CLOSE TO HOME IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. SO THATS THE MEDIUM CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT. ITS A 40% CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT AND YOU CAN SEE HERE. ITS PRETTY DISORGANIZED. IT DOESNT HAVE THAT DEFINED CENTER OF CIRCULATION. IT WILL STRUGGLE TO HAVE THAT AS IT SLOWLY KIND OF MOVES TOWARDS TEXAS. WELL SEE IF IT GETS IT BACK TOGETHER. BUT AGAIN THE NATIONAL IN CENTER GIVING IT THAT MEDIUM CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT WHETHER IT DEVELOPS OR NOT, IT WILL DUMP A LOT OF RAIN OVER PORTIONS OF TEXAS EXACTLY WHERE IT WILL GO THATS TO BE DETERMINED MODELS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT THE GOOD NEWS FOR US AT LEAST HERE IN LOUISIANA AND MISSISSIPPI, NOT OUR CONCERN NOT HEADING OUR WAY. WE ALSO HAVE POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE 2. IT IS STILL A POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLE AND BECAUSE IT ALSO DOESNT HAVE A DEFINED CENTER OF CIRCULATION THOUGH. IT HAS WINS AT 40 MILES AN HOUR AND ITS WEST NORTHWEST AT 26 MILES AN HOUR. THIS IS A BRAND NEW UPDATE FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER JUST CAME OUT A COUPLE MINUTES AGO. SO THEY DO EXPECT IT TO BECOME A TROPICAL STORM SOON. AND WHEN IT DOES IT WILL BE NAMED BONNIE BY WEDNESDAY EVENING. IT WILL BE PASSING OVER PLACES LIKE ARUBA AND THEN IT WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE WEST AND LIKELY STRENGTHEN INTO A CATEGORY 1 HURRICANE BY FRIDAY EVENING BEFORE MAKING LANDFALL THEN FROM THERE. WELL CONTINUE TO MOVE MOVE OUT TOWARDS THE PACIFIC. ITS BOWL THAT IT COULD HOLD ON TO ITS STRENGTH THOUGH AS IT MOVES INTO THE PACIFIC AND THEREFORE IT WOULD KEEP THAT NAME BONNIE IF IT BECOMES NAMED BONNIE IN THE ATLANTIC, WE ALSO HAVE THIS SYSTEM BACK HERE. SO ITS TECHNICALLY TWO WAVES THAT WILL LIKELY INTERACT AND THEN THAT COULD POTENTIALLY DEVELOP RIGHT NOW. ITS A LOW CHANCE BUT THIS EVENING THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER BUMPED IT UP FROM A 20% CHANCE TO A 30% CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE NEXT 30 DAYS YOU CAN KIND OF SEE THE PATH HERE THAT IT WOULD TAKE. ITS SOMETHING THAT WELL BE WATCHING. THERES THIS TWO WAVES THAT KIND OF INTERACT AND POTENTIALLY TRY TO FORM AND HEAD TOWARDS PLACES LIKE CUBA. ITS SOMETHING WE WILL KEEP AN EYE ON BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE HEADING OUT DIRECTION, BUT ITS REALLY NOT A CONCERN RIGHT NOW THAT LOW CHANCE ALSO BY THE WAY, THAT WOULD BE JULY 3RD OVER THE WEEKEND. ITS HEADING TOWARDS THERE SO IT WOULDNT BE BRINGING US ANY RAIN OR ANYTHING FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. WE WILL HAVE POP-UP SHOWERS AND STORMS LIKE WE HAD TODAY AND RIGHT NOW OUT THERE ITS A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN HANGING ON SOME LIGHT SHOWER ACTIVITY NEAR PLACES LIKE IN CITY, WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE ACTIVITY ALONG THE COAST THERE NEAR GRAND ISLE AND PORT FUSCHANA A HEAVIER RAIN OR HEAVIER DOWNPOUR THERE AND THEN A BIT MORE MOVING ON TOWARDS THE COAST OF IT A LIGHTNING THERE TOO. WELL SEE IF THAT HOLDS TOGETHER AND EVENTUALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO WAVELAND. SO OVERALL TONIGHT THOUGH, MAYBE A FEW SHOWERS ARE IN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM OUT THERE PARTLY CLOUDY WARM AND HUMID LOWS MAINLY IN THE 70S THEN TOMORROW THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY BACK ONCE AGAIN, NO SURPRISE HOT AND HUMID PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY, I THINK. TEMPERATURES WILL GET UP INTO THE LOW 90S FOR A LOT OF US AND ONCE AGAIN SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL POP UP IN THE AFTERNOON HOURS. I THINK THE BEST CHANCE FOR RAIN IS ON THURSDAY. THATS A 70% CHANCE FOR RAIN AND THEN FRIDAY AND INTO THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. ITS A VERY SUMMER-LIKE PATTERN HIGHS WILL BE IN THE LOW 90S. WE WILL HAVE A 30 TO 40 PERCENT CHANCE TO RAIN FRIDAY SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY FOR THE 4TH OF JULY. SO OVERALL THE HIGHEST CHANCE OF RAIN,

Socking Dingers at Wrigley, Kyle Long Co-Signs QB1, Raiders Spending Bonanza, and Other Bears Bullets – bleachernation.com

Posted: June 11, 2022 at 1:55 am

This looks like one of those days where everyone is going to put up their out of office messages at 2 p.m. and I wouldnt blame ANYONE.

A nice reminder that theres no fun like fun at the ol ballpark:

Heres the thing about Justin Fields hitting monster dongs onto Waveland Avenue: Its freaking awesome. The Bears have a fun quarterback. And that is so sweet!

Heres some free money for the NFL: Play a Bears-Packers game at Wrigley Field. Just one. Make it a special occasion. Call it a throwback game. Just dont make them wear hideous throwbacks or leather helmets. What will be lost in ticket sales will be made up by TV ratings and brands shelling out crazy money for advertising in the game. Youre welcome, NFL.

There was no denying that this Bears franchise was needing new energy coming into this season. And sometimes, it takes outside-of-the-box thinking to get to that place. To that end, I would say that using one of the teams OTA days for a team-building activity at the best baseball stadium in the country is a creative way to bring guys together. Kudos to Head Coach Matt Eberflus, who said he had been planning this date for a while. Good thinking, coach.

Now, once the Cubs season is over, I fully expect the North Side Nine to play some flag football at Soldier Field. Or perhaps they can play at the Arlington Park property the Bears are purchasing. Good luck defending Jason Heywards 6-5, 240-pound frame in the slot. That guy pretty much catches everything and has the Gold Gloves to prove it.

With that being said, I dont want to take too many targets away from Darnell Mooney, who is on the cusp of WR1 status:

If you have the ability to exercise just a hint of patience, the payoff could be spectacular. Yet another way-too-early NFL mock draft has the Bears connected to Ohio State wide receiver prospect Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who Mark Schofield has going eighth overallto Chicago. For some perspective, the Falcons had the eighth pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and chose USC receiver Drake London. Atlanta made London the first receiver off the board in this class, which gives us an idea of what the Bears could be looking at value-wise when it comes to the pick. Also? Lets keep in mind that the Falcons went 7-10 en route to getting the No. 8 pick. In other words, we could be in for some turbulence in the year to come. But the juice could be worth the squeeze.

Kyle Long a former Bears standout with a baseball background gave his stamp of approval for Chicagos QB1:

While offensive linemen are on our mind, Brad Biggs (Tribune) reminds us that this game of musical chairs the Bears are playing in the trenches is part of an open competition ahead of the season to come. Were far too familiar around here with coaches saying there will be open competitions, but not actually going through with them. And I think the Bears suffered with complacency in some areas. So, with that being said, Im digging the willingness to give everyone a fair shot at winning a role on the team. Even still I have my concerns about Teven Jenkins a second-round pick last year who many were projecting to be a first-rounder possibly falling out of favor. Then again, if he is as good as we think he can be, hell show it in practice and on the field.

As if the receiver market wasnt already bananas, the Las Vegas Raiders gave Hunter Renfrow (not the Brewers OF with a similar name), a two-year extension featuring $21 million in guarantees and is worth up to $32 million. A nice chunk of change for a seventh-round pick who grew into a Pro Bowl talent. Its been a wild offseason for the Raiders, who have a new coach and GM, brought in a new star receiver, poached some Bears along the way, and spent gobs of money in the process:

All this spending and the Raiders might be the third best team in that division? And thats no knocking the Raiders. That figures to be a good ball club next year. Its just that the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos will make that division hard to escape from with double-digit wins.

Some good perspective to keep in mind:

Ex-Bear in the CFL alert:

And here come the interviews:

Notcool, dude:

What a wild one in South Bend:

Police increase patrols in Northwest Side communities where machete-wielding robber has struck – CBS Chicago

Posted: at 1:55 am

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police have increased patrols in the Northwest Side neighborhoods where a machete-wielding robber has been striking lately.

So far, there have been eight machete robberies. The attacks have happened in Irving Park, Avondale, and Logan Square.

CBS 2's Tara Molina talked with the family of the latest victim, who was attacked around 9 p.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of North Troy Street, between Grace Street and Waveland Avenue, in the Irving Park neighborhood.

the 52-year-old man was walking down the street with a pizza he was bringing back for dinner when a man approached him, machete-in-hand robbing him.

"He came with the machete," the man's girlfriend said. "He told him, he told him, give me your money."

Too scared, too shaken to show her face on camera, the girlfriend did not want to go on camera. She showed us the pizza topping packets that were left behind after the robbery and that was far from the worst of it.

"My boyfriend told him, 'I don't have money,'" the victim's girlfriend said.

At that point, she said the attacker swung the machete at her boyfriend twice. He dodged the blade and fell pizza in hand.

He cut himself on the ground- but his girlfriend said when he saw blood, "My boyfriend think the guy got him with the machete."

The victim was bruised and on edge Monday, but his girlfriend said he was home and doing all right.

The man who swung the machete at him took off with his wallet, which police said the victim threw into the street to distract the robber.

"The guy take the pizza too!" the victim's girlfriend said.

The assailant got into the passenger side of a silver car. The latest victim described the attacker to his girlfriend and his family.

The attacker, the girlfriend said, was in his early 20's, "between 5'6" and 5'8." he's skinny, Hispanic and have a hoodie."

With all of this happening around 9 at night in a family neighborhood right in front of a church with surveillance cameras on it we asked around about video of the machete-yielding attacker.

We haven't heard back yet, but he is behind at least seven other attacks, which date back to Friday, May 27.

The incident times and locations are as follows:

3000 block of North Christiana Avenue on Friday, May 27 at 7:58 p.m. The machete-wielding attacker approached a 34-year-old man and demanded the victim's property. The victim handed it over, and the attacker left in a gray sedan.

3200 block of North Monticello Avenue on Monday, May 30 at 11:45 p.m. A 19-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when the man with the machete came up and demanded his property. The victim complied, and the attacker left in a silver/gray sedan.

4100 block of West Fletcher Street between Monday, May 30 at 11:45 p.m. and Tuesday, May 31 at 12:10 a.m. A 47-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when the attacker came up and demanded his property while brandishing a machete. The victim complied, and the attacker fled in the silver/gray sedan.

3300 block of North Monticello Avenue on Friday, June 3 at 9 p.m. A woman was walking home when the man approached her, brandishing the machete as he demanded her property. The victim complied, but the attacker then pushed the victim and fled back into the passenger side of the vehicle in which he'd arrived.

4000 block of West Eddy Street on Friday, June 3 between 9 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Two women, ages 22 and 56, were approached by the machete-wielding offender. He demanded both their property and they complied. He fled in the silver/gray sedan.

3000 block of Christina Avenue on Saturday, June 4 around 8:20 p.m. A 44-year-old woman was walking when a man came up from behind and got the victim's attention by speaking. The man ordered the victim to hand over her property, and she complied.

4100 block of West Wellington Avenue on Saturday, June 4 just before 9 p.m. A 28-year-old woman was crossing the street with a 7-month-old baby boy when a silver sedan almost hit her. The driver apologized and kept going. The woman and the baby then went into the alley, at which time the silver sedan reversed the vehicle to enter the alley. The driver then waved a sharp object, demanded the victim's property, and got back in the car and left.

Police believe the same man is behind all the attacks so far.

"The fact that the common weapon is a machete is the common denominator they likely are related. We don't have an offender in custody yet, but I will tell you, we're expending all of our resources to capture this person as soon as possible," police Supt. David Brown said Monday. "Obviously, we're concerned as every resident is that this violent person is using a weapon like a machete, but we at this point don't have an offender in custody. But we are working we're adding resources to the area where this is happening. We did that overnight, and we're adding more resources until this person is brought into custody."

Police also believe there is a second person involved who has been the driver of the silver or gray car.

Tara Molina is a general assignment reporter for CBS2 Chicago.

Justin Fields, Cole Kmet, and Teven Jenkins go yard at Wrigley – Windy City Gridiron

Posted: at 1:55 am

Several members of the Chicago Bears headed over to Wrigley Field earlier today, the home of the Chicago Cubs, while both they and the Cubs had an off day. The Bears just wrapped up the voluntary OTA portion of their offseason while the Cubs have a day off before heading to New York for a three-game series against the Yankees starting tomorrow.

The Bears were penalized for too much hitting earlier this week, which resulted in losing one OTA practice, but today they made sure to get their hits in by taking batting practice.

Quarterback Justin Fields, who played middle infield in high school, and tight end Cole Kmet, who pitched at Notre Dame, both cracked home runs today, and you can see some highlights in the Tweets below.

The homers were impressive enough, but how about the camaraderie from the players as they all rallied around to cheer on their teammates.

According to the Bears website writer Larry Mayer, Kmet won the Bears home run derby with 3, while Fields cracked 2, but it was offensive lineman Teven Jenkins who put his lone homer out of Wrigley and onto Waveland Avenue.

Unfortunately there was no video of Jenkins bomb.. until now!

The Bears shared some video from the day and their big offensive lineman was included.

Albert Pujols Made More MLB History Over The Weekend – The Cold Wire

Posted: at 1:55 am

Every time Albert Pujols steps on the field, he always seems to make a little bit of history.

Back with the St. Louis Cardinals for his farewell tour alongside Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina, Pujols is taking it all in as he experiences everything for a final time.

On Saturday, he made some more history against the Chicago Cubs.

The 42-year-old slugger was not in the starting lineup for the Cards in Game One of their doubleheader against the rival Cubs.

But when Corey Dickerson was pulled with a calf issue and Brendan Donovan shifted from first base to right field, Pujols was plugged in at first, which marked his 3,000th career game.

MLB tweeted that Pujols is just the ninth player in MLB history to appear in 3,000 or more games.

With his appearance today, @PujolsFive is just the 9th player in AL/NL history to play in 3,000 career games. pic.twitter.com/2wfukttfgR

MLB (@MLB) June 4, 2022

Albert has certainly seen it all.

Hes been to every city with a big-league team and has played in every single ballpark in Major League Baseball.

At 42, hes not done making history.

Though he is no longer an everyday player, his presence is sure felt with the Cardinals, as he continues to mentor young players on the teams roster and even have some more memorable moments here and there.

Its rare for a player to play in 3,000 or more career games, but Pujols is no ordinary player.

When youve been around as long as he has, youre bound to make some history with the number of games you play in.

And he got to play No. 3,000 at a ballpark he knows very well, with fans that have watched him dominate their Cubs for years, hitting some home run balls out on to Waveland Avenue.

This is his final season, and hes making sure to take in every bit of it.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting Nelson Velzquez: Waveland-Bound Power – bleachernation.com

Posted: June 1, 2022 at 8:08 pm

As the Cubs continue to be pushed to the limit on their depth, it appears Nelson Velzquez will be the latest Cubs prospect to join the team in Chicago. Hes up today for the double-header against the Brewers.

Velzquez is coming up, fittingly, with his last minor league game being his best since joining Triple-A Iowa. Hes held the top position in my Five Stars many, many times for the last year, and also won MVP in the Arizona Fall League with an incredible performance. I wrote at the time about the elite company his performance in that league put him in, and how that might suggest a brighter future than his presence in prospect rankings suggests. It led to him securing a 40-man roster spot in November.

Velzquez, 23, was my tenth-ranked prospect in the system in my latest rankings earlier this month.

A fifth-round pick in 2017 out of a PJ Education School in Puerto Rico, Velzquez was then a thin-but-strong player with a nice blend of power and speed. Signing scout Edwards Guzman talked about a fantastic batting practice he took as an amateur at Wrigley Field. His stock jumped in 2018 when he showed both skills with the short-season Eugene Emeralds, notching 11 home runs and 12 steals in 72 games with the club.

But when Velzquez returned in 2019, hed become so strong that it had seemed to sap a lot of his athleticism. The defense began to look fringy, stolen bases were no longer a threat, and oddly, his growing strength wasnt translating in the power department. Things were trending the wrong way.

The story of Nelsons rise since then is one of taking ownership of your career. During the 2020 shutdown, Velzquez really worked hard, getting more baseball reps than almost anyone in the organization, and re-discovering some of that lost athleticism. Velzquez is barrel-chested like few others, with big, strong arms and thighs.

When he came back in 2021, Velzquez could again be trusted in center field, though I think his best fit is in right field, where his fabulous throwing arm allows him to pile up assists (18 in 201 professional games in right). While his initial burst of speed isnt elite, Velzquez runs well once he gets going, and made numerous good plays going into the gaps last year.

But the big thing that occurred during 2021 was a swing change that Sahadev Sharma brilliantly outlined last winter at The Athletic. The Cubs have been careful to keep some of the specifics under the hood, but you can see the obvious parts here, as hes lowered his hands and simplified their pre-swing movement, and his bat path is now among the flattest in the entire organization:

With those swing changes in hand, Velzquez was near-instantly able to access the raw power hed hinted at for half-a-decade. In 202 games since the start of the 2021 season (High-A, Double-A, AFL, PRWL, Caribbean Series, Triple-A), Velzquez has hit 43 home runs (and 45 doubles-plus-triples). His max exit velocities were the best in the farm system last year.

There are few players Ive ever tracked in professional baseball that run more hot and cold than Velzquez does; its something that many in the organization Ive spoken with point out. While hes much more thoughtful about his plate approach in the past (and his rising BB% over the years tells you that), Velzquez is still somebody who sometimes sees beach balls at the plate, and sometimes sees marbles.

The question for Velzquezs viability in the Major Leagues is pretty much the same calculus as it is for Patrick Wisdom. Hell walk a little more than Wisdom, probably, and I think youd have to guess the HR/PA rate is at least a little lower. But, like Wisdom, so much is going to come down to whether the strikeout rate is closer to thirty than forty. That difference just might be the entire key.

Like with Christopher Morel, my expectation is that well just see Velzquez in Chicago for a short time. But, like with Morel, perhaps he can play his way into David Ross heart and future plans. He certainly has the raw skills to do so.

10 things we learned about the Cubs in May – Chicago Cubs News – Marquee Sports Network

Posted: at 8:08 pm

For a little while, it looked as if the Cubs might be able to follow the 2021 script and turn in a big month of May.

Last season, David Ross squad got out to an 11-15 start in April before getting hot in May (19-8) and shooting into first place to begin June.

In 2022, the Cubs were hoping to follow up an 8-13 April with another strong May but it didnt quite play out that way.

After a 5-game losing streak early in the month, the Cubs won back-to-back-to-back series and went 6-2 in a stretch before finishing the month 2-5.

Things dont get any easier in June, as the Cubs have to play 6 games in the first 5 days of the month against the top two teams in the NL Central (Brewers, Cardinals).

Here are 10 things we learned about the 2022 Cubs in May:

Midway through May, the Cubs were in a tight roster crunch and needed another position player in the big leagues.

So they promoted Christopher Morel from Double-A Tennessee. Morel was already on the 40-man roster but had only played 10 games above the Double-A level and didnt have the same hype as some of the other prospects in the Cubs system.

MLB.com ranked Morel as the teams 21st overall prospect and Lance Brozdowski ranked him 14th.

All Morel has done since his call-up is get on base in every game of his MLB career, setting a franchise record in the process.

His walk Tuesday to break the record was indicative of his impact early in his career Morel got down in the count 0-2 but battled back to lay off 4 straight pitches. Then when he was on base, he forced an errant pickoff throw that led to a run.

On top of all that hes done offensively, Morel has also swiped 5 bases and can play all over the field with starts at second base, center field, third base and shortstop so far in the big leagues.

Versatility is a bonus in our game and helps with roster construction and some of the things you look at when youre building a team, Ross said. Love him in center, love him at second. If hes on the field, hes a spark for us right now and Ill continue to take him where we can get him and try to fit the most offense possible in the lineup.

And Morel has done all this with a joyful exuberance:

He doesnt turn 23 until June 24. Two weeks is a small sample size, but at the very least, Morel looks like he could be a utility player for the Cubs long-term.

Here is the list of players who made their MLB debuts with the Cubs in May:

Christopher MorelBrandon HughesNelson VelzquezMatt SwarmerAnderson Espinoza

That list figures to grow as the season wears on, with top pitching prospect Caleb Kilian knocking at the door and Brennen Davis just one call away at Iowa.

The young pitching has been particularly impressive for the organization over the last two seasons.

After a sparkling April, Keegan Thompson threw well again in May (2.31 ERA) and made 3 solid spot starts.

Scott Effross has established himself as one of Ross most trusted options in the bullpen.

Justin Steele has had his moments in the rotation while Hughes, Swarmer and Espinoza impressed during their first foray into the majors.

The Cubs have also stuck with Nico Hoerner at shortstop to see what he can do at the position long-term, moving veteran Andrelton Simmons to second base when Hoerner returned from the IL last week.

The Cubs will begin June with an injured list that consists of:

1. Seiya Suzuki2. Yan Gomes3. Jonathan Villar4. Michael Hermosillo5. Jason Heyward6. David Bote7. Adbert Alzolay8. Wade Miley9. Alec Mills10. Codi Heuer11. Sean Newcomb12. Ethan Roberts13. Michael Rucker14. Brad Wieck

Bote, Alzolay, Mills, Heuer, Roberts and Wieck are all on the 60-day IL. Bote and Mills are currently rehabbing and eligible to return next week and Alzolay is meeting with the team soon to determine a throwing program.

On top of that, Drew Smyly is currently in limbo after leaving Mondays start with oblique soreness.

It has been a crazy couple weeks for us, said Nick Madrigal, who just returned from the IL Tuesday after three weeks on the shelf.

Its been a tough stretch for the Cubs and their depth has certainly been tested but with that has come with some silver linings, too.

As much as the bad news feels like its coming a lot lately, theres also a lot of energy from the young guys, Ross said. Swarmer threw phenomenal yesterday. When these guys get to put themselves on the map and continue to look at some pieces, its not a bad thing.

Ross also confirmed Tuesday that Swarmer will remain in the big leagues and make another start.

Speaking of the rotation

As Jed Hoyers front office set about addressing the pitching plan for the season, a big part of that picture was the rotation. The Cubs signed Marcus Stroman to a 3-year deal, claimed Wade Miley off waivers and inked Drew Smyly to a 1-year deal.

That trio of veterans combined with Kyle Hendricks and Steele to form the projected rotationbut that group has only been together twice through the order so far this season.

The healthy rotation coincided with the Cubs best stretch of the season in the middle of May as the starters turned in the NLs best ERA (2.68) in a 10-game span.

Miley is back on the IL this time with a shoulder injury and Smylys status is unknown.

But Stroman is coming off his best start of the year, Thompson has looked good in the rotation and Swarmer earned himself another outing.

This roster isnt made up of a bunch of speedsters and the Cubs stole only 4 bases in April.

But May has been a completely different story.

No team in baseball had more swipes (30) than the Cubs in the month.

That included 2 more stolen bases in Tuesday nights contest, which marked the 11th straight game with a steal the first time a Cubs team has done that since April 1989.

Morel (5 stolen bases) has helped bump up that total a bit, but otherwise its the same roster as April.

So why the change?

A big part of it is Ross and his coaching staff trying to instill aggressiveness on the basepaths in the right way.

When we identify opportunities, areas where we can maybe exploit something here or there, we try to do that, Ross said. I feel like weve done a really nice job as of late, guys have learned when to take those opportunities. I wounldnt say the first two weeks of the season was our greatest baserunning moments and we had some learning opportunities in that. We talked about that and guys are growing.

Thats part of the season and us continuing to know what were looking for and how to take advantage of it. I would say the baseball IQ of the players and their instincts are starting to pick up and play right now and doing a really nice job of putting ourselves with runners in scoring position late in games and giving ourselves a chance to if we come up with the big hit to be able to tie or take the lead.

Ross also conceded that this is a Cubs lineup that hits the ball on the ground a lot, so it is a conscious effort to get runners in motion and try to put pressure on the opposing defense.

Trade rumors will continue to swirl around Contreras but for now, he looks like the Cubs best bet to head to L.A. for the 2022 All-Star Game.

Contreras got the nod behind home plate for the Midsummer Classic in both 2018-19 and looks poised to repeat this year.

The Cubs catcher had a huge May, hitting 6 homers and driving in 11 runs while slashing .290/.426/.592 (1.018 OPS). That included a homer and an RBI double Tuesday night to close out the month.

When Willy goes, we go, Steele said. When he has a big game, home runs, hitting the ball well, seeing the ball well, I feel like the whole team feeds off the energy and everybody goes at the same time.

Contreras has been the best offensive catcher in the game in 2022 pacing the position in OPS, on-base percentage and runs scored and ranks 2nd in WAR.

One of the main takeaways from April was Suzukis incredible start and how he looked like a budding star.

May was a different story, as he struck out 26 times in 79 plate appearances over the month and will start June on the IL with a sprained finger.

Suzuki batted .211/.279/.338 (.617 OPS) in May. With regards to the strikeouts, he has been the victim of some bad luck with quite a few balls out of the zone called strikes.

That has led to a high amount of strikeouts looking but Suzuki doesnt want to get away from who he is and what he does best when he returns from the injury.

I did give that some thought but I always want to make sure I dont swing at pitches out of the zone, Suzuki said. Obviously it hasnt been a really good way for me recently but hopefully I can get over this hump and start hitting.

Obviously you see in games, a lot of the balls are called strikes on me. I dont want to change my strike zone. Just keep on adjusting.

The Cubs third baseman homered in 4 straight games in May, becoming the first Cubs player to do so since Anthony Rizzo in 2015.

Wisdom punctuated the month with a blast to Waveland Tuesday night, an 8th-inning homer that lifted the Cubs to victory.

He enters June with a team-leading 11 homers and is tied with Ian Happ for the most RBI (26) on the Cubs.

It has been exactly 53 weeks since the Cubs first promoted Wisdom to the big leagues last season and in that time, he has mashed 39 homers and accrued 3.0 WAR.

Maybe a trip to the Home Run Derby is next for Wisdom?

Tuesday nights victory improved the Cubs record in 1-run games to 5-13 this season.

So nearly half of the teams losses in 2022 have been of the 1-run variety which Ross takes as a good sign and hopes Tuesday could be an inflection point for the Cubs.

The fact that were in a lot of the 1-run games tells you the teams good enough to compete with the best, Ross said. Thats a really good team over there and weve been in a lot of 1-run games with them and a lot of teams around the league.

You gotta make things happen. You gotta push over the hump. Youve gotta have some things go right for you and you also gotta fight, which I think this group has. Theyve proven that. Big swing tonight puts us ahead.

Obviously a big win with some tough losses the last 3 games. It hasnt been for lack of effort. We need to get over that hump. Weve just gotta figure out a way to win. These guys did tonight.

As May turns to June and the trade deadline comes closer into focus, Hoyer will continue to be asked how he plans to approach the deadline and prioritize the future while trying to still help the current team win right now.

There are going to be moments in time you have to make a decision, Hoyer said last weekend. Sometimes the current and the future are in conflict. Whether its trading prospects to get a now player. Whether its doing a really long deal on a free agent. When those things are in conflict, we are going to look towards the future.

Our goal is to build something really special just like it was last time and I think sometimes to do that, you have to take a long view. Do we want to compete right now? Absolutely. When the decisions avail themselves, do we want to make decisions that help this team right now? Absolutely.

I believe going back to 12, 13, 14, taking a long view is really important. The way our game is set up, you are forced often times to decide: Is this a move I want to make right now that is going to have a negative impact on our future? When those have come up, Ive leaned strongly towards the future and I feel strongly about that.

Hoyer also draws on his experiences from other organizations, like when he was the GM of the San Diego Padres in 2010.

We had a team in 2010 that everybody thought was gonna be a last place team, Hoyer said. And that team came together and everything clicked and we won 90 games. We got knocked out the last day of the season.

Thats gonna happen every several years. Everyone that wins a division title isnt projected to win 93 games.

He is hoping the 2022 Cubs could take a similar path.

Were trying to put together a team that has the pitching, has the pieces together that if everything goes right, can compete, Hoyer said. I think that is and was the goal. But being aware that I believe we have an incredibly bright future and were not gonna make moves that are gonna hurt that future that we want to build.

Posted in Indiana Nature May 24, 2022by Kurt Kragthorpe

Some natural waterfalls are overwhelming, as the volume of rushing water creates a loud, powerful scene. Maidenhair Falls is not of those. And for that reason, it fits perfectly into the almost surreal surroundings of Shades State Park in Indiana. It still qualifies as a waterfall and is one of the attractions of the Pearl Ravine Trail, also known as No. 2 among the 11 trails in the Indiana park. Just dont expect to see a roaring phenomenon. Instead, appreciate the steady flow that creates the effect of misty, delicate strands of water.

Shades State Park is located near the town of Waveland, about 60 miles from Indianapolis and 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville. It is considered one of Indianas underrated state parks, with a natural setting. The Pearl Ravine Trail starts at the trail to Lovers Leap, with views of Sugar Creek. For more information about visiting the park, including the other 10 hiking trails, see the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources website.

Diamondbacks 10, Cubs 6: In honor of Fergie Jenkins, lots of home runs – Bleed Cubbie Blue

Posted: at 4:30 am

Cubs Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins, who had a statue dedicated to his great career Friday outside Wrigley Field on Gallagher Way (and please read Sara Sanchez article on the ceremony if you havent), allowed 484 home runs in his career.

The old saying goes, You have to be good to do that, implying that if youre not good, you wouldnt be able to stick around long enough to give up that many homers. Of course, Fergies other numbers speak for themselves, but he did allow a fair number of home runs at Wrigley Field, 176 of them.

It wasnt 176 home runs that left the yard Friday afternoon at the ballpark, but it might have felt like that many on a warm day with the wind blowing out at a sustained 25 miles per hout. The D-backs hit seven and the Cubs four, and that ties the record for the most home runs hit in a game by both teams at Wrigley (the NL, and MLB record, is 13, and the D-backs were part of that in 2019). During the ceremony:

The Cubs had a chance to come back from a big deficit in the seventh, but ultimately fell short and lost 10-6, their third straight defeat.

The D-backs scored a pair in the first, but the Cubs tied it up in the second. Patrick Wisdom began the scoring with a solo homer after the first two were out [VIDEO].

Jonathan Villar followed with a double and Christopher Morel singled him in [VIDEO].

So thats good! But Arizona came back with a pair of solo homers in the third to make it 4-2.

The Cubs cut that to 4-3 on a Villar homer in the bottom of the fourth. It was the 100th home run of his career [VIDEO].

That was as close as the Cubs would get the rest of the afternoon. In the fifth, the D-backs sent two more balls out of the yard, with Josh Rojas and David Peralta connecting, as they had done in the third. Rojas homer was with a runner on base, so its 7-3 after five. Kyle Hendricks took all that damage, and as we know, if Hendricks pinpoint control and command are just a bit off, long balls can happen, especially on a windy day like today.

Arizona made it 8-3 in the sixth with another solo homer and Rojas hit his third of the day in the seventh to make it 9-3. Incidentally, Rojas had not homered at all this year in 49 plate appearances before this game.

The Cubs tried to make a game of it in the last of the seventh. Morel batted with one out [VIDEO].

Morels second homer of the week made it 9-4 and then Ildemaro Vargas launched one onto Waveland [VIDEO].

So now its 9-5 and this is a moderately interesting rally. It got better when Rafael Ortega singled, and with Willson Contreras at the plate, the crowd got into it. And... so did Willson [VIDEO].

I love Willson Contreras and the passion he brings to his play. And as you can see below, that pitch was not a strike. But it was also close enough that a player shouldnt erupt like that, and get tossed, and potentially risk suspension (though it didnt appear that there was any contact). It was certainly entertaining, though.

The Cubs put two runners on base via walks after Willson got tossed, but Alfonso Rivas struck out to end the inning. Rivas wasnt happy with himself, slamming the bat down in frustration after swinging at a changeup well out of the strike zone (pitch 6):

Rojas came to bat in the ninth with a chance to hit a fourth home run, which would have at least been historic, but he struck out. The record-tying 11th home run of the game was hit by Christian Walker after that strikeout. The seven Arizona homers set a franchise record, for whatever thats worth.

Also in that top of the ninth, you can see the effects of the wind on this catch made by Robert Gsellman [VIDEO].

Pitchers generally arent supposed to make plays like that, but the wind took the ball away from anyone else who had a chance to catch it.

The Cubs scored one last little sad run in the ninth. Vargas walked, took second on defensive indifference, advanced to third on a fly to right and Ian Happ hit a sac fly [VIDEO].

Here are all the home runs:

I dunno, what can you do about a game like this? The visitors took advantage of the wind and the Cubs didnt. The last time 11 home runs were hit in a game at Wrigley was June 18, 2006, when the Tigers smashed eight and the Cubs hit three in a 12-3 Detroit win. I dont think I need remind you that the Cubs were a 96-loss team that year and the Tigers made it to the World Series.

Sigh. A World Series. Remember that?

Here are all the games in which 11 home runs were hit at Wrigley Field:

The Cubs and D-backs will meet again Saturday afternoon at Wrigley, weather permitting (and it might not). Justin Steele is the Cubs scheduled starter and Madison Bumgarner will get the call for Arizona. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.
