The Only Two Podcasts You Need To Get Through A Dull Day – Eagle Online

Posted: April 24, 2020 at 3:10 pm

All of you would have had moments where you are in need of a source of laughter to get you out of a depressive phase. You often seek a remedy through a sitcom or a comedy movie or comic strips, perhaps, but how many of you tune in to podcasts? If you havent done it so far, now is a good time to start.

Out of all the comedy or satirical podcasts out there, two of the most popular and best-reviewed podcasts in this genre are Ethan Kleins and Hila Kleins podcast and the podcast hosted by Kevin and Bean. Read on to see what makes these podcasts worth watching.

h3h3Productions is a YouTube channel produced by the husband and wife duo Ethan and Hila Klein. Their YouTube channel started in 2011, and in addition, the duo also runs a vlog channel and a podcast.

The H3 Podcast was started in 2016, and the creator of science fiction sitcom Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, was the shows first celebrity guest. There is also a separate podcast just for the highlights of various episodes.

The content of the podcast, except for few special episodes called Top of the Week that feature only the hosts, involves Ethan and Hila interviewing YouTubers and celebrities, discussing current events, and satirizing internet culture. Some of the guest celebrities on the show include Swedish YouTuber and comedian PewDiePie, Japanese singer and rapper Joji, American news commentary show host Philip DeFranco and Canadian author and psychologist Jordan Peterson.

The fans of the podcast praise its candid nature (despite some criticism for comedy on sensitive topics) and the comic relief it gives to people when they listen to it on the way to work or before bed. Some viewers have also praised the shows producer, Dan, and Ian, the intern, who also make appearances now and then. On YouTube, the podcast channel has over 2.1 million subscribers and more than 233 million views, and the highlights podcast channel has over 1.5 million subscribers.

Ethan and Hila have over 180 episodes recorded so far, and some episodes have been more popular or unique than the rest. Here is a glimpse of some episodes from the podcast:

Episode #48 (Feb 2, 2018): Jordan Petersons interview covers a discussion about his new book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. He also talks about his ethical principles.

Episode #55 How to save a life (March 13, 2018): In this special episode, the guest star, Chris Betancourt, is a man diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia with only one year to live. Chriss attitude and sense of humor, even when being so close to death, making this a valuable watch.

Episode #140 (September 3, 2019): Science writer, skeptical investigator, and retired video game programmer Mick West join the hosts in this episode. The topics they talk about include Bob Lazar, Area 51, and a debate about what really happened to Jeffrey Epstein.

Episode #161 where the hosts discuss Papa Johns interview where he claimed to have consumed 40 pizzas in 30 days, episode #154 a Halloween special where the entire podcast gang go out wearing costumes, and episode #143 featuring podcaster Bill Burr are some of the other famous picks from the show.

Kevin Ryder and Gene Bean Baxter were the hosts of the Kevin and Bean show on KROQ-FM, an alternative rock-format radio station in Los Angeles, California. Baxter left the show in late 2019, and the show went on till January 2, 2020, almost 30 years since its inception in 1990. This was followed by a spin-off, Kevin in the Morning with Allie and Jensen, which lasted till March 2020.

The Kevin and Bean podcast has over 900 episodes starring a variety of guest stars, including Pregame founder RJ Bell, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah, American stand-up comedian, and podcast host Nikki Glaser, tabloid talk show host Jerry Springer, and American rock band Green Day.

Some of the notable episodes are:

Beans Final Show (November 7, 2019): An episode that many fans wished never happened, this is was the last episode that Gene Baxter co-hosted before Allie Mac Kay and Jensen Karp stepped in. Radio personality and American Idol host Ryan Searcast makes a guest appearance and interviews Bean. Several other guest stars and former Kevin and Bean members feature or call in including American talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel, podcaster Adam Carolla and host of The Joe Schmo Show Ralph Garman.

Guess stars Bill Burr and Louie Anderson(November 30, 2018): American stand-up comedian and host of Monday Morning Podcast, Bill Burr, along with game show host and author Louie Anderson make appearances in this podcast episode. The hosts, along with recurring member Beer Mug, have a chat on the topic, The most embarrassing thing someone would find after you died.

The exit of Bean was a disappointment for fans, and not many of them were initially enthusiastic about the spin-off. A lot of followers reacted very negatively at the act of KROQ firing the entire podcast crew in early 2020.

However, for most of the shows run when Kevin and Bean were hosts fans considered one of the funniest shows of its times that they regularly listened to every morning. Given that the show ran for three decades, a lot of them associated a sentimental value with this podcast, considering it as something they grew up and matured with.

It is well-known that sometimes all you need is a good laugh to get over so many of your problems mental and emotional. Now, with access to the Ethan and Hila podcast and the Kevin and Bean show on Podchaser, you can tune in and listen to your favorite or latest episodes and get your dose of daily laughter.

Grandparents rely on drive-bys, technology to stay in touch – Journal Review

Posted: April 23, 2020 at 2:46 am

By CANDY NEAL

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. (AP) Michelle McCain misses holding her grandchildren.

And they miss her.

Not being able to hug, kiss, and hold them has been so heartbreaking, she said. Its been really hard with our youngest grandchild, Lakelyn. She is 7 months old now and its hard not to snuggle with her.

But Michelle does get to visit with the children from time to time.

Her two older sons, Tim and Tyler Rainey, have done drive-by visits with the grandkids in the backseat. So while Michelle and her husband, Brad, are on the porch of their rural Holland home, the grandkids are talking and beaming smiles to them out of their truck window. Doing this has given the grandparents the chance to see 10-year-old Addysen, 8-year-old Hadley, 6-year-old Remington, 2-year-old Canyon and 7-month-old Lakelyn. The grandkids even left Easter flowers for Michelle.

We have developed a game of blowing and catching kisses from each other, Michelle said. They all remain in their trucks and we stand on our front porch and talk and blow kisses.

Daughter-in-law Erica came up with the idea.

Hadley wanted to see us, Michelle said, and (Erica) parked on the other side of the highway on the county road and let us holler and wave to Hadley. Then, Tyler followed suit with his three kids, but he drove up through our front yard next to our front porch.

Our front yard now has a path developing in it, Michelle said, laughing.

Grandma and grandpa did their own drive-bys on Easter, delivering barbecue chicken, potato salad and Easter baskets. Theyve also been involved in their grandkids education, ordering activity books for them at the beginning of their e-learning sessions at home. Michelles also done some online videos of the grandkids.

Just fun things for them since Grandmas hugs are on hold for a while, she said.

Penny Spangler of Jasper, left, watches her husband, Tom, reach out to their great-granddaughter, Carter Snyder, 11 months, as Carters parents, Abbey and Collin Snyder, watch at their home in Huntingburg on Saturday.

Tom and Penny Spangler have also gotten to see their granchildren and great-grandchildren through drive-by visits.

Before the pandemic, the Spanglers had a tradition of having the grandchildren and great-grandchildren over for dinner on Monday nights, called MeMes Monday Night Meals. That would include the grandkids and great-grandchildren in Huntingburg, Ireland and Tell City, if possible. They also have grandchildren in Indianapolis.

We found that food really attracts grandkids and great-grandkids, Tom said.

MeMe and Poppa Spangler would provide a home-cooked meal with dessert, and the grandchildren would bring their families over to spend time eating and catching up.

When the pandemic started, I know they couldnt come see us, Penny said. So two weeks ago, I fixed a big old meatloaf, butter noodles and bar cookie dessert. And we went around and we delivered meals to the kids that day.

We put them on their steps, Tom said. And then stand by the car, and theyll come out.

Since the family cant be around the table together sharing the meal, they send a video of them eating, something with the baby, something creative. Its been funny, he said.

On Easter, the Spanglers went to see their Tell City family, including 18-month-old great-granddaughter Madison. That time, they stood on the porch and talked to the kids through the window.

They also keep in touch by phone, calling and using the many video communication apps.

We love Snapchat, Penny said. We have a family group. So were taking pictures and sending pictures back and forth. When we send it to family, then we know it gets to everybody.

The latest video app theyre using now is Zoom. We had 11 people on Zoom on Easter, Penny said. Were hoping to do that every Sunday night.

All this helps them keep in touch with their family. All the videos, Snapchats, Zoom, all that keeps us in touch, Penny said. We are thankful to have a way to see our grandkids and great-grandkids.

Grandparents who have been active with their grandkids may find it hard to be separated from them now.

There hadnt been a week or weekend that I hadnt seen some of them, Michelle said. And now, honestly, I have cried myself to sleep a couple nights. I miss them.

Technology has helped. A couple years ago, I got each household an Alexa from Amazon for Christmas, Michelle said. So they can call me and we can see each other. Technology has come in handy during this difficult time.

But the drive by visits are the next best thing to getting and giving Grandma hugs!

Don’t let free speech be a casualty of coronavirus. We need it more than ever – The Guardian

Posted: April 9, 2020 at 7:02 pm

In times of crisis, liberal democratic institutions and values are vulnerable to authoritarian power grabs, or corona coups, as we are seeing around the world today. One of the first victims, as always, is freedom of speech. But the current attack on free speech is particularly dangerous, because it does not only target, reasonably, fake news on coronavirus, but also critique of inadequacies in hospitals by healthcare workers.

Repressive measures against fake news have been a popular topic for years now, having reached feverish levels in the wake of the 2016 US presidential elections. Even though the actual effects of fake news and Russian interference remain unclear and highly disputed, many mainstream politicians have convinced themselves that the spread of fake news is one of the main reasons that they are losing votes and power to populists.

Social media platforms are pressured into fighting fake news and a true cottage industry of factcheckers has emerged many reputable, some not. Still, too little progress has been made. This is not that surprising, though, given the daily barrage of fake news coming out of some of the most powerful political offices in the world, including Downing Street and the White House.

Since the term was popularized by Donald Trump, it should come as no surprise that populists in power have enthusiastically embraced the fight against fake news. And now the coronavirus has given them an opportunity to intensify that fight by passing draconian new laws, allegedly to prevent fake news from worsening the crisis.

One of the worst examples, as so often in recent years, comes out of Hungary, where the rubber stamp parliament has passed a set of emergency measures without actually facing an emergency (as of 31 March, Hungary has officially had only 492 cases, including 16 deaths) to give the far-right prime minister Viktor Orbn dictatorial powers. As Orbn rules by decree, anything that he deems fake news will be punishable to up to five years in prison a death sentence for independent media, in so far as it still exists in Hungary.

Perhaps even more dangerous is the attack on the free speech of people at the frontlines of the fight against the coronavirus: healthcare workers. These are the people best informed about the situation, and thus the best potential antidotes to fake news. Yet, according to the Independent, British NHS doctors are being gagged over protective equipment shortages, while NHS England has taken control of communications for many NHS hospitals and staff.

In the US, one of the few western democracies without a universal public healthcare system, individual private hospitals are doing the censoring. Prioritizing their brand and profits over the health of their patients and staff, private hospitals across the US have threatened staff with termination if they speak out about the lack of protective gear. Several hospital staff have already been fired after speaking out, an incredible waste of crucial but sparse resources during a pandemic.

Leaving aside the problem of employers regulating the speech of their employees, incidentally an increasingly common development (even at universities), censoring healthcare professionals is outright dangerous to the broader community. These are the people who actually have day-to-day experience with the coronavirus and risk their lives to help others particularly if their employers dont provide them with adequate protective gear.

Free speech makes us more rather than less safe, both as citizens and patients

Moreover, we know how dangerous this type of censorship is from recent experiences in China. Max Fisher has written an excellent New York Times expos of how Chinas authoritarian structure had worsened the countrys response to the coronavirus outbreak. And western media have devoted ample attention to the tragic case of Li Wenliang, the Chinese whistleblower doctor who died of the coronavirus in February.

The irony is that some of the same politicians who support, or at least allow, the censorship of healthcare professionals in their own country have been outspoken critics of the Chinese approach. For instance, the British cabinet minister Michael Gove recently blamed China for failing to stop the spread of coronavirus, while Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House foreign affairs committee, even called Chinas response one of the worst cover-ups in human history.

To ensure that we are not making the same mistakes as China, and to protect the health and lives of the heroic healthcare workers (including the many volunteers) who are putting their lives on the line every day to keep us alive and healthy, we must resist these dangerous attacks on free speech, as well as other unnecessary authoritarian measures in response to the coronavirus crisis. Irrespective of the hype about fake news, free speech makes us more rather than less safe, both as citizens and patients, even in times of a health crisis.

This decrease is predominantly the result of expenses and charges related to resolving problem loans resulting in an increase in the loan loss provision expense of $780,000 and the loss on the sale of other real estate owned of $617,000. Additionally, net interest income was $137,000 less when compared to the third quarter of 2011 and non interest expenses increased $187,000 as compared to the same period last year largely due to expenses related to classified loans. These decreases were partially offset by an increase of $18,000 in fee income and a gain on sale of securities of $35,000.

Earnings for the nine months ended September 30, 2012 as compared to the nine months ended September 30, 2011 decreased $2.6 million or $0.86 per diluted share. Additionally, net interest income was $229,000 less when compared to the nine months ended September 30, 2011 and non-interest expenses increased $362,000 as compared to the same period last year largely due to expenses related to classified loans. These decreases were partially offset by a $151,000 recovery of a fraud loss recorded in 2011, an increase of $69,000 in fee income and a gain on sale of securities of $35,000.

The decrease in net interest income for both the three and nine month periods was due primarily to the reversal of interest earned on loans that were placed on non-accrual. The increase in the provision for loan losses was due to the Banks write-down of non-performing loans. In addition, specific reserves were established for several loan relationships.

Net interest margin for the nine months ended September 30, 2012 was 3.64%, a decrease of 0.22% from 3.86% for the nine months ended September 30, 2011. The margin decrease was mainly the result of a 0.37% lower yield from interest-earning assets partially offset by a 0.16% reduction in the rate paid for interest-bearing deposits.
