As Fox News front woman Megan Kelly found out Monday on national TV, if you ask an Ebola medic tough questions, you should be prepared to handle any answer. Our physical and mental response to disgust in this instance the finer points of a three-gallon-per-day case of diarrhea is something one might think to be universal and uniform across our species. Researchers led by Read Montagueat Virginia Tech have just made the claim that if they analyzeyour brain with an MRI scannerwhile you view an image of disgust, their algorithm can classify you as liberal or conservative to a 95% confidence level.

Recent studies reporting that dreams or other mental imagery can now be decoded may not have impressed everyone, but we do know that brain imaging especially with functional MRI (fMRI) is getting more powerful all the time. The question is, is it now good enough to take a look at you in action and know your very core not just the crust of our sometimes fickle worldview, but the most visceral intuitions from which they derive?

The researchers scanned some 80 people, enough to show they werent playing games. After the subjects viewed all manner of threatening, disgusting, or pleasant pictures, their brain activity wasfed into a predictive model which classified them as conservative or liberal. This model applied machine learning techniques to the data, including a type of penalized regression method known as an elastic net algorithm. The results were then compared to the subjects self-evaluations of their own political leanings. [Research paper: DOI10.1016/j.cub.2014.09.050]

The researchers found that of all the images shown to the subjects, those which evoked disgust gave the biggest effects. From that class of images, one particular depiction, one showing decaying animal remains, clearly differentiated the subjects. The subjects that self-reported conservative on the evaluations had a significantly greater neural response to this image, particularly in certain region of the brain like the basal ganglia.

Implicating any large brain area in personal idiosyncrasy from imaging data can be a tricky affair. For example, when early investigators of synesthesia (a condition that includes significant merging of different sensory perceptions) differential activation of the basal ganglia versus the cortex was reported. As more subjects were studied however, these kinds of sweeping conclusions proved difficult to corroborate.

The question remains as to what exactly thesescans are picking up on. For example, are they merely picking up on subthreshold motor plans to activate the muscular intimations of disgust? In other words, signals that if fully realized would wrinkle the nose and pull the corners of the mouth down in the near-universally recognized face of disgust? We reported previously on one technology, Motorolas smart tattoo, that might have the power to address these kinds of questions.

This electronic tattoo was originally designed to record subthreshold signals of your inner voice from a skin location near your throat. It would not be too hard to apply devices like these to the facial muscles as well, and listen in to covert political views. Clearly a simple label of conservative or liberal can not do justice to the full nuance and complexity of any individuals views. The potential role, if any, of physiologically-defined variables in politics still remains to be seen. To that point, we just reported on the political ambitions of the Transhumanist Party. Its proponents offer that our worldviews are actually partitioned at an even deeper level than the current parties pedal namely to either have the desire to persist indefinitely as technologically transformed individuals in a state of ever-increasing capability, or to have the desire to fight against those that do.

ExtremeTech has never been particularly interested inpolitics. That being said, as the focus of politics and politicians inexorably shifts towards technology, we might just jump in the water for a dip.

Many might imagine that concerns of a more socio-political nature like who is able to accrue what particular powers or possessions, and from whom would persist independently of technological influence. Others, like the Transhumanist Party founderZoltan Istvan, might offer that socio-political issues already are, at heart, technological issues. Now seizing the day, and a rapidly expanding number of like-minded transhumanists, Istvanhas announced that he will be a contender in the 2016 US presidential race.

If you havent heard of transhumanism, or youre not quite sure what it means, I suggest you read our introductory story about transhumanism before diving into the rest of this story. In short, though, transhumanism (sometimes referred to as H+) is about improving or transforming the human condition through technology. Brain implants, genetic engineering, bionic limbs, indefinite life extension these are all examples of the topics (and elective surgeries) that a transhumanist would be interested in.

In his recentbook The Tranhumanist WagerIstvan outlines three laws:

If energetically adopted, these deceptively simple maxims ultimately compel the individual to pursue a technologically enhanced and extended life. Zoltan and other supporters of transhumanism have come to see the choice to accept or reject these principles as something far more fundamental than the choice between liberal or conservative principles. In other words, it is a more compact predictor, a simpler explanation of your worldview, motivations, and actions than any current party provides.

It is for these reasons that Zoltan has founded the Transhumanist Party and is now taking this first major step to grow it. At this point in the game, the next major step getting access to all the state ballots could prove challenging. With these ideas in mind, we present an interview with (possibly) the next US president: Zoltan Istvan.

Why did you decide to run for the US presidency?

Zoltan Istvan The most important goal of the Transhumanist Party and my 2016 presidential campaign is to spread awareness of transhumanism and to address the issue that society will be greatly changed by radical science and technology in the next 5-15 years. Most people are unaware how significant these changes could be. For example, we might all be getting brain implants soon, or using driverless cars, or having personal drones follow us around and do our shopping for us. Things like anonymity in the social media age, gender roles, exoskeleton suits for unfit people, ectogenesis, and the promise of immersive virtual reality could significantly change the way society views itself. Transhumanism seeks to address these issues with forward-thinking ideas, safeguards, and policies. It aims to be a bridge to a scientific and tech-dominated future, regardless what the species may eventually become.

While the Transhumanist Party has almost no chance of winning this election, its goal is to get on as many state ballots as possible, so people will see its promise and recognize what it stands for. By doing so, well let citizens know an exciting political movement is afoot that focuses on using technology and science to enhance the human species. And maybe sometime in the future, many people will want to join it. Furthermore, Im hopeful other political parties will take notice of transhumanism and incorporate its ideas into their own philosophies.

Raleigh, N.C. Legislative leaders said late Wednesday theyre evaluating their legal options to appeal the overturning of North Carolinas constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. But legal experts say such an appeal is unlikely to succeed.

Over the past week, two federal judges one in Asheville, one in Greensboro have ruled that the amendment violates the U.S. Constitution and have ordered state officials to stop enforcing it.

U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn denied legislative leaders request to be allowed to intervene in the case. However, U.S. District Judge William Osteen granted them standing in the case.

That leaves the door open for a potential appeal of the ruling. However, constitutional and family law experts agree an appeal is unlikely to succeed. The court to which any North Carolina appeal would go would be the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the same court that ruled Virginias same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional.

That was the ruling that led to North Carolinas ban being overturned as well.

University of North Carolina School of Law professor Maxine Eichner, who specializes in family law, predicts the 4th Circuit will refuse to hear the appeal, instead issuing a summary order upholding Osteens ruling. Legislators could also petition the court for an emergency stay that would put same-sex marriage on hold temporarily in North Carolina, but Eichner doubts thats likely, either.

In order for lawmakers to win on appeal, she said, The 4th Circuit would have to reverse its previous decision. There is nothing to suggest that it would plan to do that.

Raleigh family law attorney Angela Haas, who represents gay and lesbian clients, agrees with Eichner that an appeal likely wouldnt get a hearing.

The 4th Circuit has already ruled on the Virginia ban, which is very similar to the North Carolina ban. I dont think theyre going get anywhere with it, Haas said. I think its a very futile attempt, but theyre going to fight to the death. Theyre going to fight, fight, fight until theres no other place that they can fight.
