Jon Stewart 'reveals' his post-'Daily Show' gig, 'Hatewatch'

Posted: March 19, 2015 at 2:40 am

Jon Stewart finally lined up a post-Daily Showgig on last nights episode:a brand-new C-SPAN2 show calledHatewatch with Jon Stewart, where he acts as a watchdog over Congress. Then, he promptly quit.

The Senate failed to pass ahuman sex-trafficking bill, which originally had full support of both Republicans and Democrats, because Republicans hid an anti-abortion amendment in the text and Dems want to expunge it. What does C-SPAN2 Jon Stewart call this Republican move? Fkery.

But wait, theres more: Turns out the holdup is happening now because the Democratsdidnt fully read the bill in the first place. This includes thepartys head, Senator Harry Reid, whose last name, as Stewart pointed out, is literally read. What does C-SPAN2 Jon Stewart call this Democrat move? Dumbassery.

Watch the rest of the clip below, including Stewartsemotional resignation:

Is It OK to Have Sex With a Robot?

Posted: at 2:40 am

ChihiraAico, a communication android robot, gestures to show goers at the Toshiba booth at the International Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 6, 2015. The robot is controlled by pneumatics.

Some ethicists argue sexbots will improve our lives by ending prostitution and sex trafficking, and by fulfilling human needs. The Christian Post spoke with three Christians who have written on topics related sex and human relationships and technology to get their take on the issue.

The technology required to make a sexbot, or a robot designed for sexual relations with a human, is quickly becoming available, and some companies are already working toward that goal.

First, robotics companies are already working toward designing robots that can move like humans and respond to humans with facial expressions. Second, there are several companies that make "sex dolls." Unlike robots, sex dolls cannot move on their own, but these companies continue to advance their goal of making products that look and feel as lifelike as possible. And third, artificial intelligence will allow computers to interact with humans by making their own choices and learning from experience.

As these three technologies coalesce, manufactures will be able to mass produce robots designed for sexual relations with humans. One New Jersey-based company claims to have made the world's first sexbot, although one enthusiast told Reasonthe effort "fell far short of expectations."

Sexbots in film

As is often the case with new technology, Sexbots have already been imagined by science fiction writers. For just a few film examples, "Vice," released in January and starring Bruce Willis, is about a "pleasure robot" that becomes self aware and escapes. "West World" (1973), had a similar plot, complete with sexbots, and is being remade for HBO.

Still of Jude Law and Ashley Scott as sexbots, Gigolo Joe and Gigolo Jane, in A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

1975's "The Stepford Wives" imagined a town where all the wives were replaced with robots. Daryl Hannah was a sexbot in 1989's "Blade Runner." In 2001, Jude Law portrayed a sexbot named "Gigolo Joe" in the film "A.I. Artificial Intelligence."

Post Falls Police are hoping you can help them identify the man who robbed a check cashing store Tuesday night. Officers say the man robbed the Check N Go on N. Cecil Road using a handgun, and then fled in a newer model charcoal gray Dodge Charger with out-of-state license plates of AHO-33.

The state of the plates is unknown, officers say the car had 21-22" black rims and dark tinted windows.

The employee described the suspect as a white male in his mid to early 20s with blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing a black hooded jacket, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. Male suspect also wore a mask over his lower face covering his mouth. He was armed with a black semi-automatic pistol.

While police haven't been able to make an official connection, it is worth noting that earlier on Tuesday a man matching the description of the Post Falls robber also robbed the Safeway Federal Credit Union in Spokane earlier in the day.

South Korean Conservative Group Accused of Posting Human Scum to IS

Posted: at 2:40 am

Pyongyang, March 18 (KCNA) -- South Korean internet paper Minjok Ilbo in an editorial on Mar. 15 accused the conservative group of appointing human scum to an important post of the puppet Intelligence Service (IS).

Park Geun Hye appointed Ri Pyong Gi, ex-director of the IS, to the post of presidential chief of staff of Chongwadae and informally designated Ri Pyong Ho to the post of director of the IS, the editorial said.

Ri Pyong Gi described the May 16 military coup as "an action which contributed to defending and developing liberal democracy" at a confirmation hearing, sparking off uproar, the editorial noted, and went on:

Ri Pyong Ho also caused furor in the south Korean society for his speculation.

The case of Won Se Hun now in custody for interference in the "presidential election" and appointment of Ri Pyong Gi and designation of Ri Pyong Ho, both following in the footsteps of the former, will make the people more vocal demanding the dissolution of the IS, the editorial concluded.

16.4 Million More People Now Have Health Insurance Due To Obamacare

Posted: at 4:40 am

Politics By Amanda Andrade-Rhoades, Mon, March 16, 2015

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, 16.4 million more Americans now have health insurance.

According to The Huffington Post, Health and Human Services issued a report that found the uninsured rate has fallen from 20.3 percent in October 2013, when enrollment in Obamacare was opened, to 13.2 percent this year. Health and Human Services partnered with the polling company Gallup to determine the number of people who now have health insurance.

Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act almost five years ago, about 16.4 million uninsured people have gained health coverage the largest reduction in the uninsured in four decades," Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell wrote in a statement.

In addition to enrollment in the Affordable Care Act, another 14.1 million people acquired health insurance by joining a private plan or Medicaid.

The government plans to push for more sign-ups and will spend $1.2 trillion over the next decade to expand health coverage. That estimate is lower than the Congressional Budget Office's projection in January.

The fate of Obamacare still hangs in the balance. The Supreme Court is considering the case of King v. Burwell, which could result in 9.6 million people becoming uninsured if the court rules in favor of David King, increasing the price of health care in some states.

When will Singularity happen and will it turn Earth into heaven or hell?

Posted: at 4:40 am

Defined as the point where computers become more intelligent than humans and where human intelligence can be digitally stored, Singularity hasn't happened yet. First theorised by mathematician John von Neumann in the 1950s, the 'Singularitarian Immortalist' (and Director of Engineering at Google) Ray Kurzweil thinks that by 2045, machine intelligence will be infinitely more powerful than all human intelligence combined, and that technological development will be taken over by the machines.

"There will be no distinction, post-Singularity, between human and machine or between physical and virtual reality," he writes in his book 'The Singularity Is Near'. But 2045? Are we really that close?

Moore's Law states that computer processing power will double every 18 months, which is a thousand-fold increase every decade. Is Singularity really so unbelievable? What started early in the 20th century with the development of the Monroe mechanical calculator has gone on a journey via innovations like massive parallelism (the use of multiple processors or computers to perform computations) and supercomputer clusters, cloud computing, personal assistants like Siri and artificial intelligence like Watson and Deep Blue. The law of accelerating returns is in full swing.

We're already in the era of cognitive hardware and brain-inspired architecture. IBM's latest cognitive chip, the postage stamp-sized SyNAPSE, is a new kind of computer that eschews maths and logic for more humanlike skills such as recognising images and patterns, the latter crucial for understanding human conversations.

It's powered by one million neurons, 256 million synapses and 5.4 billion transistors, and has an on-chip network of 4,096 neurosynaptic cores. It's a low-power supercomputer that only operates when it needs to and, crucially, has sensory capabilities it's aware of its surroundings. This digital 'brain' is the latest step in artificial intelligence that could be used in robots, futuristic driverless cars, drones, digital doctors and all kinds of responsive infrastructure.

But aren't there innately human skills, such as being able to tell when someone is lying? A study last March by the University of California San Diego and the University of Toronto found that a computer can spot false faces better than people.

"The computer system managed to detect distinctive dynamic features of facial expressions that people missed," says Marian Bartlett, research professor at UC San Diego's Institute for Neural Computation and lead author of the study. "Human observers just aren't very good at telling real from faked expressions of pain."

"Artificial intelligence only gets better, it never gets worse," says Dr Kevin Curran, IEEE Technical Expert and group leader for the Ambient Intelligence Research Group at University of Ulster. "Computational Intelligence techniques simply keep on becoming more accurate and faster due to giant leaps in processor speeds."

However, AI is only one piece of the jigsaw. "Artificial intelligence refers more narrowly to a branch of computer science that had its heyday in the 90s," says Sean Owen, Director of Data Science at Cloudera, who makes a distinction between game-playing, expert systems, robotics and computer vision, and machine learning, which has most of the focus today. "I do think the classic topics of AI are making a comeback, especially robotics."

McConnell: No Loretta Lynch confirmation until vote on human trafficking bill

Posted: at 4:40 pm

Monday March 16, 2015 12:01 AM

The Associated Press

(c) 2015, The Washington Post.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on Sunday that the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as attorney general may hinge on whether Congress works out its gridlock over a human trafficking bill.

"It's not a threat. We need to finish this human trafficking bill that came out of the Judiciary Committee unanimously . . . because the next week we'll be doing the budget and the next two weeks after that Congress is not in session," McConnell said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, authored by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Tex., has been stalled after Democrats accused Republicans of sneaking anti-abortion language into the bill. McConnell noted that Democrats on the Judiciary Committee unanimously agreed on the bill before forwarding it.

"They all voted for the very same language in a bill in December," he said.

Senate Democrats say Republicans sneaked the language into authorization measures. At question is a provision that the new Domestic Trafficking Victims' Fund will be subject to Hyde Amendment limitations. The long-standing amendment prohibits the use of federal taxpayer funds for abortions. The new fund, created under the proposed bill, would be supported by fines imposed on traffickers.

Meanwhile, Lynch's confirmation process has taken the longest compared with those of others who held the post, dating at least to Janet Reno. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called on McConnell to "keep his word" and not delay the vote on Lynch. There is no procedural excuse for further delay and her nomination can be brought to the floor at any time, according to a statement from Adam Jentleson, Reid's spokesman.

"By continuing to stall Lynch's nomination Republicans are failing yet another basic test of their ability to govern," the statement said. "There is nothing stopping the Senate from confirming Lynch and continuing to debate the trafficking bill this week, except Senator McConnell's unwillingness to bring her nomination up for a vote."
