We Hear You: Tampons in Men’s Rooms, Marxists in Classrooms, and Abortions for ‘Persons’ – Daily Signal

Posted: May 23, 2022 at 11:53 am

Editors note: One common theme of late in The Daily Signals mailbag is our audiences dismay at the political uprooting of common sense and reality across the nation. Heres a sampling of what you sent to letters@dailysignal.com.Ken McIntyre

Dear Daily Signal: I am 74. In high school back in the 1960s, I had a teacher who developed in me a fascination with current affairs that exists to this day.

Over the years, a few stories have triggered a What the heck is going on? reaction. Today, it seems almost daily that I see a news story triggering that reaction.

But putting tampons in mens bathrooms for transgender individuals, as Tony Perkins writes about Oregons new law (Striving for Menstrual Equity, Oregon Puts Tampons in Mens Bathrooms at Public Schools, Colleges)?

Over 2,500 cellular and structural differences exist between mens bodies and womens bodies. But we are supposed to believe that after a few physical changes, a new hair style, and different clothes, presto chango, you no longer are the gender you were born into?

And people are buying into it.Edward Towle

***

Around 2019, the Massachusetts-based company I work for started to stock tampons in its mens rooms. When I first saw the move,I puzzled over it for a bit.

The median salary around here is at least around $150,000, so no question that any transgender employee could easily afford tampons. Clearly its a form of virtue signaling, and a rather cheap one at that.

To increase the cost to roughly where it ought to be for real virtue, I decided the ethical thing to do was to grab most of the tampons and donate them to my local church. (Id leave a few for any actual transgender folks.) My church runs a beeline down to places like South America, where women (and men) with limited resources often have to go without such personal hygiene items.

I recommend this as common practice.I also get a kick out of knowing that the same older ladies who count the collections also sort the donations.Mike S.

Dear Daily Signal: Although I share Douglas Blairs concern with ever-decreasing standards for children, to call this group of morons (i.e. English teachers) Marxist is giving them too high praise (Why the Left Wants Twitter Over Tolstoy in Our Schools).

Yes, they borrow Marxist language. But thereissuch a thing as legitimate Marxist critique (regarding self-reference, power structures, and so on). However, in order to understand any of it, you mustfirst be able to read.

What this is really about, ultimately, is half-educated whack-a-dos borrowing bits and pieces from things they half understand, and coming up with the conclusion that they dont have to teach children anything.

The emphasis needs to be on theincompetenceof so many teachers, not on some nefarious plot to indoctrinate the children. (It isnt what the children learn, it is that they dont learnanything.)

Seeing evil forces at work gives these people far too much credit. The evil force here is usnamely, that we round up some of the dumbest people we can find and let them teach. Dave Baxter

Dear Daily Signal: In this radically leftist, socialist-engineered environment that we live in, the Democrat purveyors of ambiguous truth may have left themselves open for the fallout of their own politically correct ambiguity, as Virginia Allen reports (Democrats National Abortion Bill Replaces Word Woman With Person).

Trapped by their own war on words, they successfully have blurred the lines of meaning to such an extent that now their own words clearly can be used against themor at least against any ill-conceived political intent to recast Roe v. Wade as a womens right or womens health issue.

First, we must acknowledge that, based upon the Democrats legislative record on abortion, the radical left is desperately trying to perfect and protect their claim on infanticide, a gruesome practice shunned by most developed cultures and people.

Secondly, in the current climate of gender pronoun fluidity, where the word person is substituted in preference to any gender specificity, and where vacillations of identity shall not be questioned, the only identifiers permissible for those who contributed to the conception of a new third party infant entity would be the 50% shareholder as sperm donor and the 50% shareholder as egg bearer. For ease of understanding, we shall refer to each party to the conception, as well as the conceived party, as it.

If it is a 50% shareholder in the 100% conception of it, then who or what is to say that it should not have a say in the disposition of it?Furthermore, if it decides that it now chooses to invoke the superior standing of the other 50% shareholder of it, then who is to say which it has superior standing? Certainly not the law.

Since the left is so gung-ho to preserve the right of it to elect federally sanctioned and enforced infanticide, then what is to protect it if there is a dispute over the disposition of it in the face of this brave new world that we are constructing, where homicide is permissible by federal law?

To what depths will we citizens of this once great nation stoop, to demonstrate tolerance for such abject lunacy?Greg Mann, Texas

Dear Daily Signal: Your readership should notethat despite claims to the contrary from some in the heterodox Jewish world, the predominant position of the major traditional authoritiesin Jewish law is that abortion is prohibited unless there is a direct physical or emotional threat to the health of the mother.

This position also allows for cases such as incest or rape, which is determined on a case-by-case basis by rabbinical authorities who are viewed as having the requisite knowledge.

The traditional Jewish position is a nuanced rejection of both an absolute right to life and the agenda of reproductive freedom that advocates abortion on demand for the full nine months of pregnancy, with some even advocating infanticide. It is tragic that our society today valuesdestruction of the family, sacrificing children rather than protecting the family and sacrificing for children

Judaism and Jewish law arestrongly pro-marriage, pro-children, and pro-family in the most traditional sense of those termsand reject the hook-up culture that we all confront.

Justice Samuel Alitos draft majority opinion, if it is the ultimate opinion of the Supreme Court, is an excellent survey of the principles of constitutional law and federalism, as well as a realization that sonograms today depict a growing life in the earliest stage of pregnancy. This was clearly not evident in 1973, rendering the first trimester rule of Roe v. Wade scientifically incorrect.

>>>Read Justice Samuel Alitos draft opinion

It is a disgrace that some are trying to force Justice Alito to live in a witness protection program for being intellectually honest, telling the truth, and reminding us that Roe v. Wade rivaled Dred Scott as an incorrectly decided ruling with no basis in the Constitution that failed to resolve a hotly debatednational issue.

The leak of the draft opinion represents what happens when the ends justify the means becomes acceptable as both a means of policy and as a means of intimidating public institutions and dissenting views.

The demonstrations and rhetoric since the leak are all too reminiscent of the riots of the summer of 2020 and the ongoing assaults against American Jewish supporters of Israel and their houses of worship by the woke left.

May we all pray in our own ways for domestic tranquility, as set forth in the Constitution. Please keep up your excellent work.Steven Brizel

One or more persons in the Supreme Courts internal organization is a Judas (Could Supreme Court Leaker Be Criminally Prosecuted? Maybe). That person has done grievous damage to the Supreme Courts decision-making process, which relies on confidentiality.

Why did that person violate his or her oath by leaking Justice Samuel Alitos prepared, but yet agreed to, majority opinion? Because the totalitarian Democrats mantra has been that the ends justify the means.

If that Supreme Court traitor is revealed, I predict the Democrats will lionize the person. If the deed serves the Dems quest for power, no deed, no lie, no crime, no deception, no tactic is wrong.

This is the historical route to an evil society. Remember Stalin? Remember Hitler? Look at what is going on in the streets in front of the Supreme Court justices homes. Take heed!George G. Rose, Charlotte, N.C.

Having worked as an RN in a college health service, I had more than ample time to counsel young women on pregnancy options. However, I was discouraged from talking with them about continuing the pregnancy, keeping the baby, or adoption.

Having had two miscarriages and three full-term pregnancies, I had actual knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth. I also had nearly eight years as a single mom, beginning four months before my first child actually was born and my husband left. I knew the struggles and joys of single parenting.

I am so disgusted what Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Schumer, and all these imbeciles are doing to my America.Deanna Turner, New York

Dear Daily Signal: The U.S. was energy independent on Jan. 20, 2021, and the price of gas here was $2.17 per gallon (the national average was $2.38 a gallon). But on that first day in office, President Joe Biden signed executive orders, one of which attacked the oil and gas industry and set into motion an inflationary spiral that has crippled every Americans budget.

Today, Biden says it was Putins war in Ukraine that caused inflation. But Putin didnt invade Ukraine until Feb. 24, some 13 months after Biden took office. Is this president being truthful?

Examples of this administrations failed, nonsensical policies are numerous and growing.

So where is the rest of the U.S. press, and why dont they question this president and his administration? A silent press is simply not a necessary press.Mike Simon, Glen Ellyn, Ill.

Lykke Li: I struggled a lot with self-hate and my looks and my body – The Independent

Posted: at 11:53 am

Lykke Li is sick of being lovesick. She is sick of singing about being lovesick. She is also sick, period. As in physically sick. Unwell. Im in bed with a fever, the Swedish singer-songwriter mews down the phone from her hotel room. She is in London promoting her latest album EYEYE, a record that is all about breaking patterns. Lovesickness be damned.

People may wonder why someone in Lis position a singer who has weathered the storm of Noughties celebrity and come out the other side, the kind of elusive, enduring artist that many indie musicians aspire to be would want to break such a successful cycle. Anyone who has ever listened to a Lykke Li song will know why: she writes about heartbreak. Her own. Over and over. Across four now five records, Li has reached into the crevices of her bleeding heart and found catchy tunes. Albums move subtly between heartbreak and heartache, longing and yearning. The pain is most palpable in her torch ballads but listen close, and youll hear it pulsating like a migraine even in her most radio-ready pop moments. Fifteen years after finding success at 21, Li is ready to break the cycle.

I didnt want to get stuck in the repetition of being hurt and making songs about it, she says. Admittedly, EYEYE does chronicle the dissolution of another relationship, but it also examines Lis impulse to create art out of pain. I wasnt aware of it before. This was the first time that I took a step back and analysed my whole relationship to love from even before I was born, she says. Li dissected the many fantasies she had internalised as a young girl devouring films, poems, and art. Im ready to break my own repetition and perfect the circle to create some harmony and balance. Its an album to myself and what I started many years ago. Think of EYEYE as a last hurrah then, or rather a final sob.

The tracks on her previous record, 2018s exquisitely named So Sad So Sexy, drew on hip-hop with trap beats and rap features. An eclectic assortment of super producers including Vampire Weekends Rostam Batmanglij, and Frank Ocean producer Malay were brought in to assist. Li can see now that this outside intervention served a personal purpose at a difficult time. I was in a very hard place in my life, she says. She had just given birth but she had also separated from her partner, the Grammy-winning producer Jeff Bhaskar. Her mum had died of brain cancer. It was like all the worst things that can happen, happened. The album became a way of surviving. It was something for Li to cling to while the world around her atomised. Looking back, Li is both astonished and proud that she managed to pull it off. I dont understand how I got it done when I was in so much grief and pain, plus the exhaustion of having a baby. She finds it interesting that So Sad So Sexy is the album that sounds the least like me.

If So Sad So Sexy was a digression, EYEYE is a homecoming. Li can remember lying in bed, exhausted from touring and nursing another broken heart. She listened to the voice memos on her phone, where she records snippets of inspiration and melodic ideas. I really thought, I dont want to destroy the rawness of those this time. I want to make the most intimate and raw and alive piece Ive ever made, she says. To those ends, EYEYE was recorded without headphones or click-tracks. There is the sound of a dishwasher running in the background. Everything was one-take.

The writing process was low-key: at home alone in her bedroom. Well, my home is very much one big bedroom, Li says, explaining there is wall-to-wall carpet everywhere. I like to be horizontal and just dream. She also returned to the safe hands of her longtime collaborator Bjrn Yttling, who has worked on all her records except So Sad So Sexy. It was during that period that Li began psychedelic-aided therapy. She took psilocybin, ayahuasca and 5-MeO-DMT together with her therapist. Actually, not the ayahuasca, she clarifies. That was with a shaman.

Im quite sensitive when I have to be out there in the world, so I get sick a lot on tour, says the 36-year-old

(Theo Lindquist)

Like many of her best songs, EYEYE revels in abject feeling. On the album opener No Hotel, she sings to near nothingness. Her voice is long-breathed and solitary: I know I hold on/ To someone not here / But you wont go away. Her music is not so much a cooling balm for your wounds as it is a hot iron to cauterise them. Languish with me fellow sad-sacks, her songs seem to say, and I will make our pain into something beautiful.

If even half the anguish Li sings about is real she later tells me that sadly it all is you would not blame her for hardening to love. Instead, Li remains painfully open to it. I think its quite heroic, she laughs at her enduring belief. At 16 she was a complete romantic. At 36, she remains one. Li suggests that maybe it is because she is an artist. Im potentially more open in general. Like, Im trying to be open.

A side effect of that, though, is that she is often unwell. Im okay with being vulnerable in my work because its somehow protected but when I have to be out there in the world, I always get sick. Li hosted a listening event last night, hence this mornings fever. As if on cue, a doorbell rings and she politely excuses herself to answer room service who have brought her a cup of tea. A metal spoon dings against porcelain. She continues, Im quite sensitive when I have to be out there in the world, so I get sick a lot on tour. I ask if she thinks of herself as an empath, someone who feels the moods of others as though they are her own. I think so. I need to learn how to shield myself.

That energy of celebrity and Hollywood is something I really detest

Speaking to Li, its easy to believe. She is not the husky-voiced chanteuse of her sad, sexy songs. Instead, she has a spacey air about her and a girlish lilt. She is the sort to giggle, rather than laugh. I feel myself lowering my voice, to match her whisper. Although Lis camera is not on, if it were, I might see her spectral face with big eyes and a small mouth framed by a dirty blonde pixie cut.

Li had a nomadic childhood, moving around several times with her family: Stockholm, Portugal, Lisbon, Morocco, Nepal, back to Stockholm. Winters were spent in India. Growing up, she spent her time reading and listening to music on her Walkman. Michael Jackson was her first CD. A bit politically incorrect now, she says. Li began dancing at five. At 15, she decided she wanted to do something more creative. She applied to music school in Stockholm but didnt get in. That was devastating but it somehow awoke the underdog in me and made me certain that I wanted to do music.

Li has been sure of herself ever since. Strangely, Ive always had a clear idea of what I dont like so Ive been able to say no quite easily. No, its not right. No, its not there yet. It was easy when I was younger because I was quite cocky. Her Swedish accent sticks on the double consonants like toffee. Li says her greatest regrets are the times she allowed things to slip through that she knew werent quite right. This idea of creative purity preoccupies Li endlessly. Naturally, she has dreamt of clearing out her catalogue. She would wipe it all other than I Follow Rivers and I Never Learn. Li is a perfectionist to the extreme. Even when I look at this room, I wish this or that was a bit to the right or to the left. When Im ordering food, I want this very specific thing. I carry a vision inside of me and then when it doesnt translate, its very painful. At last nights listening event, Li wished the lights had been less bright; that a hotel sign was not in view; that the audience were facing the other way. Im always imagining a better situation.

Li counts herself fortunate that her career has been mostly smooth sailing. Having entered the industry at 21, she knows how easily the opposite couldve been true. I wonder why I never had those #MeToo situations happen to me, Li says. Later, she posits a theory. Maybe its because I never leaned into my sexuality. I wasnt even aware of my sexuality. I never had that energy and I think maybe thats why it was completely shut off from me because it was always about the art.

But if being a young woman in music did not throw up challenges, becoming a mother certainly did. Overnight or rather nine months the industry grew increasingly dismissive of her. I feel like its improved a little bit now, she says. Im happy to see Rihanna out there with a belly. Its like the hottest thing ever and so pregnancy is becoming less destigmatised. You see power in it now. She pauses and circles back. But I guess thats not really true because she has infinite resources so its a false example.

Becoming a parent wasnt what she expected. For one thing, Li thought motherhood would temper her ambition. In reality, she has never been more driven. But practically, she asks, how are mothers expected to do this? I want to work; I want to be completely lost in my creation, but I also have to take care of this child. Its quite brutal, to be honest. And thats when you really see What is it called? Im not so good in English with these types of words. She searches her brain for a moment before finding it. Inequality. You see the inequality. Its very hard to be a woman. It really is.

Uninterested in fame, Li says she would be completely happy being an anonymous songwriter

(Theo Lindquist)

The effect motherhood had on her body image was similarly surprising. I have had a really complicated relationship with being a woman; I never felt like one, to be honest. I struggled a lot with self-hate and my looks and my body. I felt that I didnt have the power that women had, she says. In pregnancy, that changed. I found both the strength and softness, I was like, Wow, I am a woman. Li adds that on EYEYE, she leaned into her masculine side and realised she is quite androgynous. Its been interesting to play with gender identifications. Its yin and yang. Opposites. Duality. Everything is both.

On the subject of bodies, we speak about the time Rihanna once complimented Li on her tits. She giggles at the memory. Sadly, thats when they were fresh and quite large at the time, and now they arent anymore, she says. I really struggle with that, but I think its interesting to have body parts you struggle with, especially in this world where all these young girls get plastic surgery and fillers. Li is curious to see if soon itll be viewed as antiquated not to have had any plastic surgery. She isnt judging. Just curious.

The singer mostly keeps to herself. She lives in LA but never ventures west. That energy of celebrity and Hollywood is something I really detest. The only thing she cares about is the music, she says. I just want to write a good song. Li would also like to try her hand at writing for others, adding that she is completely happy being an anonymous songwriter. Perhaps she can smuggle any future heartbreak into songs sung by other people.

Lis most devoted fans view her as a patron saint of modern-day sadness. And they make countless memes to that effect, the best of which Li has compiled together on her Instagram. But Li wants a new challenge, and hopefully to find a lasting love. Its almost more difficult to describe the fragility of something good and beautiful. Complete love is something Im curious to try describing.

EYEYE is out on 20 May

Your Weekly Roundup of New Movies: On the Count of Three Is a Suicide Comedy – Willamette Week

Posted: May 11, 2022 at 11:31 am

TOP PICK OF THE WEEK

On the County of Three

*** The premise of standup and sitcom star Jerrod Carmichaels directorial debut is a tough sell. Two lifelong best friendsVal (Carmichael) and Kevin (Christopher Abbott)enter a suicide pact and commit to spending their final hours on a banter-driven revenge tour. Playing like a bizarre blend of Promising Young Woman (2020) and Falling Down (1993), On the Count of Three toys direly with the notion that impending death could force eleventh-hour meaning onto two lives. Moreover, its a daring experiment in tone: asphalt-black comedy one minute (even though its the last day of their lives, Val refuses to support Kevins Papa Roach fixation), followed by the unrelenting selfishness of the bullies and abusers whove inspired Val and Kevin to pack it in. Carmichaels dour acting never quite attests to Vals deeper despondence, but Abbotts remarkable performance swallows and synthesizes all the movies contradictions. The Possessor star makes Kevins manic behavior sympathetic, engrossing and even ironically funny. On the Count of Threes visual realism is arguably too disturbing given its patently insane and politically incorrect setup, but it never sweats that high-wire oxymoron suicide comedy. Instead, it willingly follows its characters into the muck of brotherly love, misery, impulse and idiocy. R. CHANCE SOLEM-PFEIFER. Cinema 21.

ALSO PLAYING

Marvelous and the Black Hole

*** Weve seen cinematic juvenile delinquents become writers, math geniuses and karate kids under the wings of kindly older mentors. So why not magicians? Thats the premise of Marvelous and the Black Hole, writer-director Kate Tsangs debut feature. Raging, vandalizing and self-harming over the untimely death of her mother, 13-year-old Sammy (Miya Cech) is a child protagonist who partakes in cigarettes and violent daydreams. She finds a guide in Margot (Rhea Perlman), a small-time magician who advises her new protge to channel that rage into something less smashy. Perlman perfectly understands the assignment, showing how Margot meets Sammy at her level with both anger and witand, as Sammys father, Leonardo Nam captures a widowers burden with a surprisingly realistic stiff upper lip. Ultimately, the whole enterprise is well-acted and distinct enough that when it climaxes with an obligatory magic show, its not an irritating plot panacea. Is the film cute Sundance fare about a teenager breaking from family rules to chart her own course through performance? Sure. But didnt one of those just win Best Picture? NR. CHANCE SOLEM-PFEIFER. PAM CUT, May 14.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

** Last year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe birthed the spry battles of Shang-Chi, the cosmic splendor of Eternals, and the sweet melodrama of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was a hell of a hot streakand it was too hot to last. All MCU movies are a collection of computerized showdowns and sequel-baiting cameos, but the best films in the series both fulfill and transcend the formula. Despite being directed by the brilliant Sam Raimi (the original Spider-Man trilogy), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness does the oppositeits basically a feature-length commercial for the WandaVision streaming series and countless other properties. The story features Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) defending the universe-hopping America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from demonic forces, but their apocalyptic adventures are depressingly irrelevant. Gomez has spunk aplenty, but Cumberbatch coasts through the multiverse with apathy, as if killing time until his next Power of the Dog-caliber role. He looks especially wan next to Elizabeth Olsen, who shreds the screen as Scarlet Witch, a reality warping warrior whose power is only matched by her motherly ferocity. Why wasnt the entire movie about her? Stephen Stranges name may be in the title, but a goatee-adorned action figure is no match for a living, breathing, raging woman. The sorcerer never stood a chance. PG-13. BENNETT CAMPBELL FERGUSON. Academy, Bagdad, Cedar Hills, Cinemagic, City Center, Eastport, Fox Tower, Laurelhurst, Living Room, Lloyd Center, Pioneer Place, Roseway, St. Johns, St. Johns Twin, Studio One.

Strawberry Mansion

** A high-concept, lo-fi future trip, Strawberry Mansion is set largely in dreams. Those are, after all, the professional purview of James Preble (Kentucker Audley), an auditor in the year 2035 who dresses like Willy Loman and works for a government agency that taxes dreams. When James is called to the titular pink home of an old woman whos basically pirate-dreaming, hes whisked into the freeing noncompliance of her reveries, auditing dream after dream. Theres plenty to admire in a shoestring indie film aspiring to the dystopian fantasies of Gondry or Gilliam, and Strawberry Mansion strives to make the most of its lightly surreal funhouse aesthetic: animal masks on human bodies, stop-motion animation, and a dream sequence featuring a figure completely engulfed in moss. But Audley, who also co-directed the film with Albert Birney, is whisperingly dull as a system cog who becomes sentient ( la Jonathan Pryce in Brazil). Despite the implication that dreams are cathartic, ungovernable expressions, Strawberry Mansion never musters the intensity necessary to make them feel worth fighting for. NR. CHANCE SOLEM-PFEIFER. PAM CUT, May 13.

Welcome to the Dollhouse, Waitress among Festival films celebrating May anniversaries – sundance.org – Sundance Institute

Posted: at 11:31 am

By Vanessa Zimmer

May blooms with the birthdays of a couple of popular school comedies from the Sundance Film Festival recognized both by their film titles and by the real-life challenges reflected in their storytelling. Todd Solondzs Welcome to the Dollhouse emerged at the 1996 Festival and Brian Dannellys Saved! at the 2004 edition, releasing in theaters later those respective years.

Both films featured Heather Matarazzo, who made her debut in Welcome to the Dollhouse, playing a bullied seventh grader (the same age as she was at the time) and winning an Independent Spirit Award for her nuanced performance at that tender age. The film itself earned a Grand Jury Prize at the Festival.

Described in the Festival Film Guide as a gleeful, nondenominational, politically incorrect comedy for anyone whos been to Bible camp, Saved! follows the flow of life at a Christian high school. Matarazzo portrays a student who wants to be part of the in clique.

Two other Sundance alums observing May anniversaries are Waitress, with Keri Russell receiving acclaim in the lead role, and the Irish film Once, a modern-day musical.

All four are worthy of birthday celebrations in your own home. Cake is optional.

Chris Rock jokes about Will Smiths slap in public for the first time – Marca English

Posted: at 11:31 am

Last night was an absolute circus at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles as Dave Chapelle presented a set for the 'Netflix is a Joke' festival. The biggest celebrities and stars were in the front row. People like Elon Musk or P-Diddy were in attendance but other fellow comedians were actually backstage to show support for Dave.

At a certian moment during his set, the king of politically incorrect comedy was tackled by a raging fan who was beaten up to a pulp and even got a dislocated arm. Images of the person who dared to do this were flooding the internet late on Tuesday. But the most viral moment came as Chapelle decided to invite Chris Rock on stage.

Will Smith, Chris Rock in heated moment at OscarsAP

As Dave's security detail was dealing with the man who jumped the comedian, Jamie Foxx was also helping him out while wearing a cowboy hat. But the crowd lost it when Chris Rock shared the microphone with Dave to say the punchline we've all been waiting for.

The crowd erupted in laughter after the man who made the Oscars viral again decided to give his two cents on the recent act of stupidity from an angry "fan". Chapelle was grinning as he told the crowd he just stomped on another black man backstage for the first time. After that, Rock took Dave's mic and said:

Was that Will Smith?

In previous moments, Chris Rock has mostly avoided talking about that event that changed live television forever. It was also a moment that effectively gave peoepl who don't like comedy the courage to do what this person did on Tuesday night. Attacking a comedian in the middle of his act is wrong, regardless of how much you dislike him.

We are already calling it 'The Will Smith effect' because it truly did set a precedent that might never go away. Comedians are being attacked for expressing their art form and they need to be protected at all costs. It's pretty jarring to think that people can just go on stage and assault somebody for telling jokes.

7 Great Growth Stocks to Buy in May – InvestorPlace

Posted: at 11:31 am

Typically, its not a good idea to trade on aphorisms like sell in May and go away. Though some phenomena does seem to carry statistical merit, its best to rely largely on the contextual fundamentals of the moment. That said, the aforementioned aphorism is starting to look mighty prescient. Still, it may not be time to give up on great growth stocks to buy in May.

To be clear, acquiring equities at this juncture is fraught with risk. Driving the volatility are two key factors: global instability concerns and rising recession fears. Obviously, Russias decision to invade Ukraine worries world leaders as the conflict can prolong, causing substantial disruptions. In turn, the fragile recovery from the novel coronavirus pandemic has met this previously unfathomable obstacle, causing many folks to run away from growth stocks.

However, for the daring, it might be time to press into the equities market. Now, Im not suggesting that you go in blind and buy anything thats stained with crimson ink. Instead, several relevant opportunities exist that have unfortunately encountered roadblocks. And if youre patient, these growth stocks to buy could represent incredibly viable discounts.

Still, let me reiterate: patience is the key for most of these ideas. So if youve got the proper mindset, these are the growth stocks to buy in May.

An operator of retail gas station chains, Murphy USA (NYSE:MUSA) is simultaneously relevant and cynical. Part of the broader transportation infrastructure, Murphy USA helps keep America moving quite literally. Furthermore, since the companys locations tend to be near Walmart (NYSE:WMT) stores, they appeal to those who are budget-sensitive. That might be most of us pretty soon.

But because of this dynamic, MUSA is also a cynical investment. Still, cynicism sells, especially during rough times. Thus, while it might not be a feel-good trade, MUSA is easily one of the best growth stocks to buy in May.

Unlike the other names, MUSA is performing very well this year, up nearly 18% on a year-to-date (YTD) basis. More importantly, vehicle miles traveled is back up to pre-pandemic norms. And it might even move higher from here due to the return to normal along with consumer trends like revenge travel.

If recent events have shown us anything, its that giants also bleed. Take for instance Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL). Depending on your view, Alphabets Google architecture is either a godsend or a big tech albatross that must be destroyed. Whatever ones opinion, GOOG stock finds itself down around 20.5% YTD after several disappointing sessions in the technology realm.

To be fair, Alphabet could face some more pain in the near term. Some of its innovations such as autonomous driving protocols might have to take a backseat due to global supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, the companys YouTube platform finds itself embroiled in geopolitics as it attempts to combat Russian disinformation and meeting predictable backlash from the Kremlin.

Despite these and many other distractions, its important to note that Alphabet continues to rake in the money. In the first quarter of 2022, it generated $68 billion, up 23% year-over-year (YOY). Essentially, the company owns the internet and that hegemony is worth its weight in gold as proven by its financial performance.

During the peak of the new normal, a company like Kelly Services (NASDAQ:KELYA) might not have been so appealing. A workforce and staffing solutions provider, Kelly faced tough competition. For one thing, with the federal government providing generous assistance to state unemployment benefits programs, workers had higher standards for what they would trade for their time. And the private sector itself was competing with higher wages.

So, going with a headhunting agency seemed beneath folks. Well, with a recession, beggars cant be choosers. Cynically, there might be a deluge of white-collar beggars hitting the labor market. The thing is, these folks may have to downgrade their expectations should the workforce favor employers as opposed to job seekers.

As an aside, its why you should try to avoid burning bridges unless there are compelling reasons to do so. But the key factor that helps KELYA as one of the growth stocks to buy is the potential return to the office. Moreover, Kelly Services offers myriad opportunities, including call centers and warehouse management, thus fitting many applicants profiles.

If you have the stomach for engaging great brands at low prices that could temporarily go even lower then you should direct your search for viable growth stocks toward Adidas (OTCMKTS:ADDYY). While its equity units are traded over the counter here in the U.S., the sports apparel brand is famous the world over. Therefore, Im not as terrified about its trailing-year loss of around 46% as I would be for other publicly traded securities.

That said, Adidas is going to have some trouble points to figure out. While losing the Russia market has been rough for many companies, its likely going to be significantly problematic for Adidas. Frankly, the Russians and eastern Europeans in general love the brand. From trendy and upwardly mobile people to the youth shpana subculture that features prominently in countries of the former Soviet Union, they all have the German sports brand in common.

Still, I expect in the long run that positive sentiment will return to ADDYY. Its simply too powerful of a brand to ignore. Plus, with the FIFA World Cup over the horizon, the company enjoys some tailwinds.

One look at NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) and you might be tempted to think that Ive suffered a catastrophic cranial injury. Rest assured, I am operating with full cognitive abilities which might not be that reassuring to some of you. However, NuScale may very well be one of the better growth stocks to buy for the long run.

Yes, I understand that SMR entered the public arena via a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). For the most part, SPACs have been utter garbage post-business combination. And NuScale is tied to nuclear energy, which may be anathema to many investors due to security concerns.

But what you have to understand is that due to the extraordinary energy density of nuclear power facilities, its likely impossible to ignore this sector when discussing energy resilience and independence. Furthermore, NuScale specializes in an advanced technology called small modular reactors (SMRs).

Basically, were talking about nuclear power facilities with a smaller footprint, strong safety protocols and structural flexibility, enabling integration thats impossible for full-scale powerplants. It could very well be the wave of the future so its worth putting on your radar.

Perhaps one of the most disappointing sectors during the recent fallout in the broader capital markets is the cryptocurrency space. Proponents have argued until they were blue in the face that decentralization of finance is the future. And that may be the case. However, decentralization alone hasnt been enough to rescue valuations. Not surprisingly, then, Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), a popular crypto wallet and exchange service, has suffered significantly.

As I write this, COIN is down about 69% on a YTD basis, one of the worst-performing growth stocks. Admittedly, the natural instinct, in this case, is to be a conformist, not a contrarian. Those of us who follow the crypto space even loosely recognize that its a market thats incredibly volatile. You might be rich one hour, a pauper the next.

Nevertheless, the one factor that should give people hope is that the crypto market is long-term resilient. With mainstream awareness and acceptance of blockchain-based applications, the cats out of the bag. While COIN may have some more to drop, you might want to start eyeballing some exposure at these discounted rates.

A popular music and podcasting platform, Spotify (NYSE:SPOT) quickly gained street cred for going against the grain in terms of socially acceptable dialogue. Most notably, the companys flagship podcast The Joe Rogan Experience is well known for voicing honest discussions, even if said talking points are deemed politically incorrect or insensitive.

Of course, Rogan has been generating headlines for not-so-pleasant reasons. He has caused a backlash among fellow celebrities and influencers for his position on Covid-19 vaccines, along with treatment suggestions that arguably have little to no merit. Also, Rogan caused a firestorm of controversy when a video of him using a racial slur surfaced.

These problematic circumstances have seen SPOT stock tank around almost 60% YTD. But have they dimmed enthusiasm for Spotify? No. As CNN attested, celebrities may be leaving the platform but not paying customers. That type of loyalty despite apparent toxicities may be enough to make SPOT one of the growth stocks to buy in May.

Microsoft Word is censoring you by altering your politically incorrect language – The Telegraph

Posted: May 3, 2022 at 9:54 pm

A document editing tool launched by computer giant Microsoft has been criticised for advising writers to type assigned female at birth, rather than biologically female.

Critics say it amounts to censorship of an individuals writing and makes a mockery of language, flying in the face of the biological and linguistic meaning of the word woman or female.

It comes after The Telegraph reported that Google has also started telling users not to use particular words because they are not inclusive enough.

The online giant is rolling out an inclusive language function that prompts authors to avoid using certain words and suggests more acceptable replacements.

Microsoft Word has introduced a similar tool, prompting users of the editing function to avoid certain words. Users can opt in or out of the function.

As well as advising people to steer clear of the term biologically female, it urges them to change phrases such as Postman Pat to Postal Worker Pat, as the former may imply gender bias.

It also recommends amending Mrs to Ms, including changing Mrs Thatcher to Ms Thatcher. In addition, it proposes that users change the word mankind in Neil Armstrongs famous phrase one giant leap for mankind to humankind'' or humanity.

Critics have objected in particular to the biological definition of a woman being flagged as potentially offensive.

Helen Staniland, a software developer and feminist activist, told The Telegraph: Microsoft appears to be trying to influence how people discuss social issues, but not really know or understand what they are suggesting.

What do they mean by gender bias? Why are they suggesting that the perfectly descriptive phrase biologically female might imply a gender bias? Why would they presume that assigned female at birth might be better?

It seems that they are trying to jump on the bandwagon of attempting to prevent discussion of biological females, but their suggestions dont help them.

If they wanted to include trans women in this cohort, then their suggestion should probably be women - if you subscribe to the idea of trans women being women. Assigned female at birth is simply another way - albeit in forced genderist language - to discuss the same group, unless they are attempting to suggest that trans men are neither biological females nor subject to male violence.

In short, this part of their inclusiveness proofing is a mess.

Social media users have also criticised the Microsoft Word tools gender bias warnings.

One, called Suze, said: Sex in utero or birth is based on observable phenotypic traits, which are basically the clearly observable physical traits. Its not assigned or designated.

Erik Wedin, a blogger from Sweden, wrote on Twitter: Assigned at birth? Hey @Microsoft have you lost your mind? You do know doctors dont assign sex at birth? They observe and record sex and normally long before birth.

A Microsoft spokesman said: Microsoft understands that not every Editor suggestion may be suitable for all users and all scenarios. Thats why we let users be in control of their final output.

"Editor is a completely optional tool that users can turn on or turn off at any point. Editor does not make any autocorrections, all suggestions are just that suggestions for the user to consider and the user has control over which suggestions they choose to use, if any.

"In Word, users will have control at the critique/suggestion level as they will be able to turn on and off each one of them individually.

Among the words Googles inclusive language tool objects to are "landlord", which Google says may not be inclusive to all readers and should be changed to property owner or proprietor.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s really simple comfort food they love to eat – My London

Posted: at 9:54 pm

The Cambridge family have access to the worlds tastiest meals, yet one of the familys favourite dishes is very simple yet gut-busting! It turns out that when Kate Middleton and Prince William cook with Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte, they love whipping up a mac and cheese.

It was reported that during a visit to Enfields Lavender Primary School, the Duchess made the revelation to Matthew Kleiner-Mann, Hello! reports. He said: "She was telling us how much her children love cooking and how they cook for her. They made cheesy pasta the other day. One stirs the flour, one puts the milk and butter in. And they make salads and stuff."

But not only does she love comfort food, she also has a taste for Japanese cuisine too. Prince William revealed he and Kate are massive sushi fans during a visit to Japan House London, where he met Japanese chef Akira.

He reportedly said the food was very impressive as he sunk his fangs into some salmon sashimi. The future king added: "Thank you very much. My wife and I love sushi. We might have to come down here for lunch when no one else is in."

But there are also foods that the royals are banned from eating in public. a royal foodie has provided insight into what they eat, and most importantly, what they can't eat publicly. Former palace chef Darren McGrady worked in the royal kitchens whipping up delights back in the nineties.

In an interview with The Telegraph he said the royals are advised against eating certain foods in public, like shellfish and foie gras, as they're "too risky". He didn't specify what was risky about them, but Yahoo Sport reported that it's believed Prince Charles had animal welfare concerns on the brain when he banned the decidedly politically incorrect foie gras.

Over-the-top political farce of women at the White House in the world premiere of ‘POTUS’ on Broadway – DC Metro Theater Arts

Posted: at 9:54 pm

The mood is manic, with the White House in a state of panic, as a coterie of frantic females tries to deal with the PR nightmare that is the President, but creates an even bigger nightmare of their own, in the world-premiere production of POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive, a female-centric political farce by LA-based writer Selina Fillinger, now playing a limited engagement at Broadways Shubert Theatre.

Directed with non-stop frenetic energy by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, the riotous show is filled with over-the-top stereotypes, politically incorrect laughs, and hysterical physical comedy, delivered by an all-star all-women cast of favorites from the stage and screen, whose characters weave a web of spins and cover-ups that leave world peace, a feminist contingency of voters, and their own positions and sanity hanging in the balance. Its a decidedly exaggerated yet all-too-familiar look at the entitlements and abuses of the American presidency that depicts women behaving just as badly in the service of a powerful man until they come together, recognize the true meaning of the popular internet acronym FML, and ask each other the eternal question, Why arent YOU President?

A terrific cast lets loose with the parodic portrayals, foul-mouthed tirades, and sexual explicitness, hurling incessant insults and every misogynist epithet known to man at one another, while protecting, gratifying, and kowtowing to the (sort of unseen) commander-in-chief, or gleaning and exposing the truth about him, all for their own personal and professional gain, in characters that suggest composites of well-known public figures of our recent and current times.

Tony Award winner Julie White as Harriet, the White House Chief-of-Staff, is a whirlwind of sidesplitting rage, barking orders and shouting obscenities as she is faced with how to handle the scandal(s) and what to tell the Press Secretary Jean played with equal concern but greater deadpan control by Suzy Nakamura in her noteworthy Broadway debut as shes about to face questions from a roomful of reporters.Among the most probing is Tony Award nominee Lilli Cooperas Chris, a tenacious member of the press and a nursing mother, determined to get the big story, no matter what it takes, while pumping her breast milk, getting incoming calls on her unsilenced cell phone (oops!), and causing yet another major presidential crisis with the marble bust of a revered Suffragette (a witty reference to the farcical perversion of the early feminist movement).

Add to them the smart but insecure assistant Stephanie, played to comedic perfection by SNL regular Rachel Dratch in an uproarious Broadway debut; SAG Award winner Lea DeLaria as the brash drug-dealing Bernadette, Jeans ex and the Presidents sister, released from prison and there to receive a pardon from her brother for her conviction; Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award nominee Vanessa Williams as the strong and in-charge First Lady Margaret, willing to maintain the appearance of charm, commitment to public service, and a stable marriage to retain her popularity and to advance her own ambitions; and Emmy Award winner Julianne Hough in another stellar Broadway debut as Dusty, a pretty, young, and ever-ebullient bimbo, impregnated by the President, flown out to the White House on a private jet to see him, vomiting up blue slushies from morning sickness, and causing more stress for the staff and distress for Margaret. And though the show is not a musical, with Stroman directing and Hough (known from the TV series Dancing with the Stars) in the cast, its no surprise that it includes amusing segments of dance and concludes with a mini-concert of feminist anthems by the united women.

The wild action is enhanced by Sonoyo Nishikawas high-key lighting and a rapidly rotating set by Beowulf Boritt that shifts with the scenes from historic room to room in the tastefully furnished White House. Costumes by Linda Cho, and hair and wigs by Cookie Jordan, are suited to the womens personalities and to the scornful (and sometime unwitting) jokes about them.

POTUSs adult situations, obscene language, and sexist-based humor might not be for everyone, but they effectively serve to heighten the socio-political farce and to drive home the closing feminist message, Youre gonna hear me roar.

Running Time: Approximately one hour and 45 minutes, including an intermission.

POTUS plays through Sunday, August 14, 2022, atthe Shubert Theatre, 225 West 44thStreet, NYC.For tickets (priced at $39-250), go online. Everyone must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the building and must wear a mask at all times when inside.
