IT was always going to end badly after the Germans beat up a priest.

Tracking down the troublemakers, Ambrose OHare and his mates left one man to guard their remote hideaway against cannibal tribes then marched the rest for miles across rugged country, to face humiliating and painful retribution...

This is just one part of the gritty, grumpy and to modern eyes politically incorrect soldier OHares account of a little-known tropical conflict just north of Australia.

With battles, booze, dodgy dealers, whips and naked natives it reads like the backdrop for an Indiana Jones film.

And while all too real, our brave, modest and lucky main mans recently published diary of bizarre experiences forms an account of WW1 service unlike all others.

In particular, his story of how troublesome Germans got a nasty but non-lethal taste of their own medicine is fascinating, considering recent much-criticised claims that Australian soldiers in the area committed war crimes by shooting prisoners.

MCCARTHY, BATES AND SARANDON. Romance isnt the only thing that makes their journey eventful.

There are crass jokes and politically incorrect situations in Ben Falcones Tammybut, the cool confidence of the films supporting actresses, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates and Sandra Oh, rub off on the movie and its polarizing lead star, Melissa McCarthy. The characters the trio portrays dont always make the right decisions in life, but they stand by their choices and refuse to get trapped in the perceived limitations of their gender.

For her part, the 44-year-old, Oscar-nominated actress is cast as a woman who doesnt mind getting on everybodys bad sidewhich is similar to many of her past roles (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Identity Thief).

When Tammys car hits a deer on her way to work, the accident sets off a series of unfortunate situations that expose her to further abuse: She gets fired for reporting late for work and catches her husband (Nat Faxon) having a romantic dinner with their next-door neighbor (Toni Collette)!

She goes on a road trip and grudgingly agrees to let her grandmother, Pearl (Sarandon), tag along (its her car and money). Unlike Tammy, who doesnt know where shes headed, Pearl wants to go all the way to Niagara, about a thousand kilometers awayto make her childhood dream a reality!

Something unexpected

Then, something unexpected happens when Tammy and Pearl meet Bobby (Mark Duplass) and his father, Earl (Gary Cole), during a stopover in Kentucky, halfway through their journeysparks fly!

Romance isnt the only thing that makes the journey of this mismatched pair eventful: Someone is hauled off to prison, while the other is forced to rob a shopdire situations that compel a pair of married lesbians to come to their rescue! Thankfully, the couple isnt used as fodder for silly gender jokes, but provides surprising lessons about fighting for things that truly matter.

The films irreverent humor is too in-your-face and broad to pass for sophisticated comedy some of its jokes work, while others dont. However, its refreshing to see headstrong women do crazy things that are often only expected from men and its even more comforting to hear them owning up to their faults, and learning from them!

Special arrangement Veteran film director Harikumar is making a film on the late child artist prodigy Clint (in the photo along with his parents).

If the cold reception from the fans as well as the general audience was not enough, Mohanlals Onam release Peruchaazhi has now landed in the soup over a few politically incorrect dialogues in its script.

One of the dialogues delivered by Vijay Babus character in the film has been deemed derogatory of those hailing from Attappady. Though a few critics had raised the issue at the time of the release, things actually heated up two days back with director Biju Damodaran putting up a Facebook post against such insensitiveness. He particularly held the superstar himself responsible for this and criticised him for promoting such regressive thinking.

Now, the actors fans, known to be intolerant of even mild criticism of the man, attacked Mr. Biju verbally on his page. Some of the comments mirrored the insensitive dialogue in the film, thus vindicating the directors stand that such lines have a huge impact on the viewers. The fans are of the opinion that the star cannot be held responsible for what the scriptwriter has written.

Last checked, the fans are still hunting him in packs, a la Sachin-Sharapova episode.

Some of the other sequences in the film, including that of the star creating racial tension for the sake of a few votes, have also been criticised for political incorrectness. Though it has been explained away as a reflection of real life, critics have pointed at how it is all depicted in a positive light, as a sign of intelligence of the star.

Clint will remain a sorrow for Malayalis always. He had died, in 1983, at the age of six, after leaving behind about 25,000 paintings. Paintings that belied his age.

Two decades after his death, veteran director Harikumar is making a film on the prodigys life.

I felt Clints extraordinary life needed to be told on celluloid, says the director of films such as Sukrutham, Ayanam and Udyanapalakan. A few days ago, I discussed the possibility of such a film with M.T. Vasudevan Nair, who also encouraged me to work on it.
