Steve Solomons theatrical one-man shows which began with My Mothers Italian, My Fathers Jewish and Im in Therapy have been criticized for perpetuating stereotypes and also just for general crassness.

But Solomons naughty, but not dirty family-centered storytelling is traditionally old-school, and that may have something to do with his comic beginnings.

The person that influenced me was Jonathan Winters. He would do sound effects and I would emulate him. I worked all my life with the sound effects, says Solomon, who also was mentored early in his career by George Carlin, himself a comic known for politically incorrect humor.

Solomon brings the fourth installment in his Italian/Jewish series, Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt, to Booth Playhouse beginning Tuesday, when it starts its seven-day run.

It is politically incorrect, and I think thats why people love it, says Solomon, who left a career as a high school administrator and physics teacher to pursue comedy writing. Old ladies that wear black dresses and stir sauces and gravy thats a stereotype? Thats the way I grew up! Thats every old Italian lady I knew. The older people know thats the way it was. Its not a stereotype. Im describing people I come into contact with.

He says that while his family has mostly embraced the shows, which feature 20 different recurring characters and are more akin to plays than stand-up, his daughter did once ask him to remove a joke.

She brought all of her friends to see the show when it was on Broadway, Solomon says. In the scene, shes a crazy teenager. I have a friend that says shes spoiled. And I said, No. Shes supposed to smell like that. She came backstage and said, Dad, that line has got to go.

Cannoli, Latkes & Guilt is set in his parents attic as theyre preparing to move to Florida from the Brooklyn home theyve shared for 40 years. My sister and I were going to take care of the moving, says Solomon, who discovered they hadnt bothered to pack the attic. The attic was far from empty.

And he says the humor transcends ethnicity.

In Galveston (where he played last week), there wasnt a Jew or an Italian for a thousand miles, he says. Its not just about family. Its about airports and doctors and people you come into contact with. I think that is why it works.

"The people [in US and UK distribution companies] we spoke to found it politically incorrect," Sabine Chemaly of TFI International told Le Point magazine.

The film got mostly rave reviews in France, with one critic praising it as a "sort of hymn to the melting pot of France, an efficient comedy that uses self-derision to promote multicultural tolerance".

The film's message appears to be that even if the French are sometimes a little racist, common sense will prevail and everyone can in the end get along.

The director, Philippe de Chauveron, said his film was about "deflating" the prejudices peddled by the anti-immigrant Front National party, whose support has been growing rapidly in France in recent years.

But the few reviews that have appeared in the English-language film trade press were negative.

"The majority of the jokes are extremely heavy-handed -- the Jew calls the Arab "Arafat" and then is karate-chopped by the Asian," said the Hollywood Reporter, while Variety magazine noted that the film had been criticised for "perpetuating racist stereotypes and feeding into France's ambient xenophobia".

The 2011 French film, The Intouchables, touched upon similar topics as Serial (Bad) Weddings and grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, but it's hard to see Weddings honeymooning far outside the usual Francophone hotspots," added the Hollywood Reporter.

An interview with a member of comedy glam metal band Steel Panther can, like the band's stage show, be uproariously funny. The band's members interview in their characters of profane and politically incorrect stereotypical 1980s hair-metal musicians.

But while you chortle at drummer Stix Zadinia saying he's just come from the gym, where he was "checking out the cougars," listen to what he says about the band's tour with metal gods Judas Priest. (The bands play Wednesday at Allentown's PPL Center.)

There's plenty of truth and wisdom in the answers, too.

Take the explanation of the band's recently released third album, "All You Can Eat," given by Zadinia (he doesn't reveal it, but his real name is Darren Leader.)

"When we went in for 'All You Can Eat,' we wanted to make a complete record that covers all the bases, musically, that we liked," the drummer says. "We didn't want to do 12 tracks that sounded exactly like each other. And we didn't want to do songs that sounded like ones we recorded on previous albums. And we wanted to paint a whole musical picture.

"And I think we were able to totally go in and do that. And the end product, I think, is a ... kicking album."

Someone apparently agrees. Released April 1 (get it?), the disc hit No. 24 on the Billboard albums chart, Steel Panther's highest position ever. And it became the group's third-straight disc to top the Comedy chart, starting with 2009's "Feel the Steel" and 2010's "Balls Out."

The new album's songs are filled with over-the-top juvenile sex, drug and rock 'n' roll humor, with titles such as "Party Like Tomorrow Is the End of the World," "You're Beautiful When You Don't Talk" and several titles unprintable in a family newspaper.

But the disc is, indeed, a collection of styles, and Zadinia says the group is able to do that because of its comic persona.

"I feel like we are allowed to do whatever the ... we want to do," Zadinia says. "You take an artist like, I don't know Maroon 5, right? They're expected to put out pop songs. They're expected to sing about relationships. Or they can sing about dance songs like 'Moves like Jagger.'
