OREM Though he is no longer in the race, thousands turned out for Ron Paul's appearance at Utah Valley University Thursday.

The Texas congressman and former Republican presidential candidate's "revolution" continues for droves who turned out to hear him give his 45 minute speech at the school. The speech, which he delivered without notes, ranged in issues from free markers, the deficit, welfare, poverty and limited government.

"Once you endorse the principle of welfarism, guess what? The poor get poorer, and the rich get richer," he said. "It's a totally failed system. And we can't be intimidated by those that argue, 'If you don't support the welfare system, you're not a humanitarian.'"

Some of the loudest applause from the audience came from the portion of Paul's remarks focused on foreign policy, particularly comments that he was opposed to pre-emptive war and that U.S. forces should be immediately removed from Afghanistan.

Audience members also cheered during Paul's more traditionally liberal arguments. He talked at length about individual liberty as it pertains to intellectual and religious freedom, adding that the same concepts should be applied to what people eat and drink or how they choose to live their lives.

The event, which was organized by the Young Presidents Organization, was held Thursday afternoon at the UCCU Center.

Ron Paul given rock star treatment by packed crowd at UVU

Posted: at 11:47 pm

Ron Paul signs an autograph after speaking at the UCCU Center in Orem on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

OREM Ron Paul received a robust welcome at Utah Valley University on Thursday, drawing supportive chants, cheers and standing ovations from the audience as he lambasted the federal reserve, income taxes, the war on drugs, the war in Afghanistan, medicare, welfare and foreign policy.

The longtime Texas congressman and three-time presidential candidate brought his trademark small government message to the UCCU Center to the delight of the near-capacity crowd. But while Paul's remarks were critical of U.S. government both past and present, his message focused on the ability of individuals to band together and demand change.

"There truly is a revolution happening in the country, and people's attitudes are changing," he said. "There is reason to be optimistic about what is happening today."

Paul made several references to the role technology plays in society today. He encouraged all in attendance to take advantage of the Internet and social networking to educate themselves and help other people understand the benefits of limited government.

Paul also said that personal freedom and civil liberty are not ideas embraced only by a small subset of the Republican party. They are fundamental principals that bring people together from the entire political spectrum, he said.

"Peace is better than war. Free markets are better than socialism. Balanced budgets are better than spending," Paul said. "Why do we lose this argument? It seems like it's so attractive."

On policy issues, he spent a large portion of his speech discussing the welfare system and federal spending. In his lifetime, Paul said he's watched government increase its commitment to social programs to the detriment of the middle and lower classes.

"Once you endorse the principle of welfarism, guess what? The poor get poorer, and the rich get richer," he said. "It's a totally failed system. And we can't be intimidated by those that argue, 'If you don't support the welfare system, you're not a humanitarian.'"

Ron Paul and BP Join Fray with Quiet October Surprises

Posted: at 11:47 pm

Not since the 1972 October surprise that put Richard Nixon ahead of George McGovern has there been such attention paid to events during the final days before the presidential election. Ron Paul and BP now join Donald Trump and Gloria Allred. Each entity is injecting a topic that may reflect unfavorably on one or both candidates' characters and policies.

Ron Paul: Candidates Fail on Fiscal Policy

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, former Republican presidential nomination contender Ron Paul noted, "They'd just as soon not talk about it too much." Incumbent President Barack Obama has supported U.S. Federal Reserve Chairperson Ben Bernanke, whereas former Gov. Mitt Romney intends to replace him if he wins the White House. Romney has not been forthcoming about his choice of replacement. Paul predicts that the role of the Fed will have to take a front seat during the next administration, no matter who leads it. Voters may have to decide who has the business acumen needed to deal with this issue.

BP: Did America's Green Energy Policy Fail?

Voters who pay close attention to green energy were surprised to learn that BP has canceled its plans of building a large commercial plant in Florida. Biofuels Digest reports that BP is "ending its pursuit of commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol production in the U.S." There is talk that rather than using Florida grasses, the company will move to Brazil's sugarcane. Voters, who still recall the Solyndra debacle as reported by the Wall Street Journal, may have to think twice about the current course that the push for alternative energy is taking.

Donald Trump: President Obama Fails on Transparency

The Donald has visited the "Late Show" to discuss his offer to make a $5 million donation to a charity of the President's choice, if the latter would agree to grant the public access to his passport application and college transcripts. The Huffington Post notes that Trump would actually like to affect a swap of Romney's "tax returns for Obama's college records and passport records." Voters must decide if their candidate should have the privilege of barring the electorate's access to these records.

Gloria Allred: Candidate Romney Fails on Honesty

The Boston Globe reports on a 1990 lawsuit that resulted from an acrimonious divorce. Romney testified in June 1991, and it is his testimony that the Globe attempted to unseal. While joining the fray, Allred noted that the confidentiality agreement signed by the parties was "the most comprehensive gag order I have ever seen in my 36 years of practicing law." Yet when the Globe failed to push the issue further, Allred accused the publication of a "double cross." Voters may have to decide if the business-friendly candidate on the ticket was perhaps a bit too friendly with a fellow entrepreneur, or if this allegation is just a working of the rumor mill.

Ron Paul-Inspired Group Lobbies for Bill Prompted by Paul Reimbursements

Posted: at 11:47 pm

A nonprofit group founded to push Rep. Ron Pauls agenda on Capitol Hill has put its weight behind a bill inspired by a reimbursement snafu of Pauls.

The Liberty Committee, headed by former Paul aide David James, has launched a lobbying campaign for legislation to improve disclosure of Congressional office expenditures.

The bill, H.Res. 580, would help expose Washington corruption, the group says, citing Roll Calls reporting on Paul double-billing plane tickets and other travel expenses both to taxpayers and his campaign.

The practice netted Paul thousands of dollars in dozens of examples for which documents show he was paid twice.

Roll Calls review also showed that changes to expenditure reporting in 2009 have shielded details about how lawmakers spend their taxpayer-funded office budgets, prompting Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) to introduce legislation on the subject.

Quigleys proposal would require Members to itemize individual travel expenses, among other things, in order to fill in gaps in publicly reported data that arose in 2009.

That year, the House for the first time released its quarterly expense reports online. But Congressional administrators erased a vast array of details on the expenditures, making it impossible to determine what much of the money was actually spent on.

Liberty Committee, which Paul tasked James to launch in 1998, is lobbying for Quigleys bill.

Congress suffers from a deficit of public trust, but we can earn that trust back by increasing transparency so taxpayers know how we spend their hard earned dollars. Shining more sunlight on the travel reimbursement process is an important part of holding elected officials accountable because it is a frequent expenditure in most congressional offices. I welcome any support for this and similar transparency efforts, Quigley said in a recent statement.

Tight race to succeed Ron Paul growing heated

Posted: at 11:47 pm

Bill Clinton, the Democratic Party's ablest advocate these days, touched down in Beaumont last week to lend his star power to that rare political phenomenon in the Lone Star State, a Democrat running for an open seat in Congress who actually has a chance of winning.

Although the Republican candidate, state Rep. Randy Weber of Alvin, remains a slight favorite to take the GOP-leaning District 14 seat held for years by Ron Paul, Democrat Nick Lampson is competitive. The former congressman from Beaumont out-raised his opponent by about $50,000 in the third quarter and had about $422,000 in cash on hand, while Weber had $55,000.

"I think it'll be very close," said University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray. "Lampson's not your average Democrat. He's an experienced and well-funded candidate, but he's got to get a lot of Romney crossover voters to pull it off."

In a Beaumont rally the other night, Clinton described Lampson as someone who will "work with anybody that's got an idea worth listening to."

Lampson's opponent, Clinton said, without mentioning Weber by name, is an ideologue more interested in adhering to tea party orthodoxy than in serving the needs of the district.

"He said he wasn't knocking on doors in moderate households because they were not receptive to his message," Clinton told the crowd.

Donations in dispute

In a tight race that grows more heated by the day, Lampson has questioned Weber's character and judgment for raising and keeping $22,500 in illegal campaign donations. A resident of Jefferson County who supports Lampson filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission last week.

Weber, who touts the endorsements of Paul, Gov. Rick Perry, GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and several area congressmen, acknowledges that seven individual contributors exceeded the individual-donor limit of $2,500, with four of them writing checks for $5,000 apiece and three others writing multiple checks for $2,500.

"If he can't be trusted to manage his own money, how can he be trusted with the public's money?" said Lampson campaign spokesman Daniel Van Hoogstraten.
