RUSSIA TIGHTENS INTERNET SUPERVISION
A new law that aims to protect children from harmful on-line content, came into effect in Russia on November 1st. The measures will allow the government to take any sites considered harmful to children offline. And as CCTV reporter Wang Ying explains, residents in Moscow are mixed about what the new law means for Russia. This newly established website began operation on November the 1st in Russia. From it, you can check if a webpage has been banned officially in Russia, or you could report one if you think it contains illegal content. According to the new law, only sites that contain child pornography, or promote drugs or suicide can be shut down. The institution responsible for site monitoring is the Federal Supervision Agency, or Roskomnadzor. But some are afraid that this new law might increase censorship in Russia. Olga, Moscow Resident, said, "There are some controversies. Because it depends on the supervision department to decide whether a website should be closed. Some websites that do not have illegal content may be banned." But there is also evidence showing public support for it.
