Ron Paul Won't Go Quietly
Posted: November 11, 2012 at 4:41 am
Americans haven't heard the last of libertarian icon Ron Paul.
The former Republican presidential candidate, who inspired the most passionate followers of anyone in the 2012 race, says he will continue spreading the word about the need for less government, lower taxes, and fewer U.S. military interventions abroad.
[GALLERY:100 Years of Presidential Races]
Paul, a longtime Republican U.S. representative from Texas, didn't seek re-election this year.
"I think people had enough of me," the 77-year-old congressman told Bloomberg Television. "I do not have much confidence in the political system and never did. My goal has always been to change people's minds because as long as people demand more government, they will get it. Government reflects the people. That is why I am excited to go to college campuses and I will continue to do that. That's where I will get a lot of support."
Paul added: "We're so far gone. We're over the cliff. We cannot get enough people in Congress in the next five [or] 10 years who will do the wise things."
After the Republican National Convention last summer, Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party nominee, tried to appeal to Paul's libertarian-oriented army during the general election campaign but had limited success.

Paul said Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney "was hit because ... one issue he was correct on, he opposed the [auto industry] bailouts, and the people in the Midwest voted against him: 'Oh, we have to be taken care of.'"

Ron Paul: Obama Got Re-Elected Because Majority Is Receiving A Check
Posted: at 4:41 am
When asked the question of how Obama won the 2012 election amid a slow economy and high unemployment, Paul gave this answer on Bloomberg TV on Wednesday.
If you look at the numbers and if you look at the way pure democracy works, pure democracy is dangerous, said Paul, a former GOP presidential candidate. The majority dictates against the minority. So, right now the majority are receiving a check. So when you get a vote, that is why people were sort of surprised with these conditions that this president can get reelected. That is a bad sign in that there are more on the receiving end. People do not want anything cut. They want all the bailouts to come. They want the Fed to keep printing money.
Paul, who champions the Libertarian view of more individual freedom and less government intervention, was somewhat echoing the 47 percent comment by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a May fundraiser this year. Romney told wealthy donors that almost half of Americans felt they are victims and are dependent on the government. He also said these are theObamasupporters, who felt entitled to housing, food and healthcare.
It took a while, but Romney did apologize for the remarks, saying he was completely wrong.
Already Over The Fiscal Cliff
The Texas Republican also spoke to Bloomberg about a possible compromise between Obama and Congress on the national deficit, saying America is already over the fiscal cliff and it is now a matter of choosing how to land.
Were so far gone, Paul said. Were over the cliff. We cannot get enough people in Congress in the next 5-10 years who will do the wise things. We have to prepare for having already fallen off the fiscal cliff.
Paul, who did not endorse Romney, thinks a compromise should be on agreeing on what to cut instead of agreeing on what to protect.

As seen on Adamvstheman. This took place on October 18th at the University of Alabama. The UA Young Americans for Liberty invited Adam to speak on campus. Good description of the non aggression principle and Voluntaryism. I am not associated with any of these people but they helped and are still helping me with forming my own opinions on voluntaryism and libertarianism. Republicans Must Focus on Social Libertarianism to Win Back Voters
Posted: at 4:41 am
After the Republican Party was denied its bid for the White House and lost two Senate seats to Democrats, Yahoo! asked voters what they'd like the GOP to focus on in the next two to four years. Here are one voter's thoughts.
COMMENTARY | Republicans used to be the party that freed the slaves. Now they sometimes wear the label of rich, out-of-touch, racist and sexist white guys. I believe the reason for this is because of where many of them stand on social issues. If they ever want to take back the White House or Senate, their top concern should be social transformation. Their secondary concern should be sticking to their economic values, while strategically proving why their economic stance is the best for America.
Republicans should be the party known for freedom and equality for everyone. Their stance on economic issues backs freedom. Because of their stance on social issues, however, Democrats have been able to connect those great economic values with homophobia, sexism, and even racism. If the Republican Party wants to get anywhere, it needs to become socially libertarian.
Second, Republicans need to prove their economic values are the ones that work best for America. They should not back down on their belief that low taxes for everyone, with fewer loopholes for the rich, is the best course to take. They may have to compromise, however.
Compromise may mean giving up on tax cuts for the rich. If Republicans must give in on some economic issues, they should at least make a point of saying that the compromise will not do anything to help our dire economic situation. If Americans want to climb out of their economic hole in two years, they will have the Republicans to which they can turn. Americans will only vote for Republicans, however, if they share the socially libertarian values of true freedom and equality for everyone.

Do You Have a Duty to Vote?
Preliminary reports from the 2012 presidential election show that 57.5% of eligible voters in the United States turned out to vote, but what about the 42.5% that stayed home? Should they have voted? Is there a moral obligation to vote? Jason Brennan is Assistant Professor of Ethics, Economics, and Public Policy at Georgetown University. He is the author of Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know (2012), The Ethics of Voting (2011), and A Brief History of Liberty (2010). Twilight of the Elites and the Rise of the Culture [Uncertain Principles]
Posted: at 4:40 am
In which I use my double license as a physicist and a science fiction fan to engage in some half-assed futurism spinning off Chris Hayess much-discussed book.
-
I dont read a lot of political books, because I tend to find them frustrating. Theyre usually surprisingly ephemeral, trying to spin Deep Meaning out of a collection of recent events that are highly dependent on short-term context. They also tend to be much better at identifying problems than suggesting plausible solutions, coming off like that famous Sidney Harris cartoon with a bunch of equations on the left side of a blackboard, a bunch more on the right, and Then a Miracle Occurs in between. They identify a bunch of features of the current system, a desired end state for some idyllic future society, but are really hazy about how to get from one to the other.
Lots of really smart people have talked up Chris Hayess Twilight of the Elites, though, and some of the synopses I read online made it sound interesting. It certainly touches on a lot of issues of interest in higher education, making it relevant to my interests, so I picked up a copy.
The subtitle is America After Meritocracy, and the central argument is pretty simple: that organizing society around the ideal of meritocracy, where people accrue material rewards on the basis of some innate ability, sounds like a good idea but inevitably leads to a wildly unequal distribution of wealth and power. It works fine for a generation or so, but eventually those who achieve wealth and power in one generation begin to use their wealth and power to tilt the distribution of wealth and power in favor of their own interests, and in particular, those of their children.
This takes a lot of forms, and Hayes gives a bunch of different examples. The most relevant to discussions of higher education are magnet schools and the like, which started out as a way to allow lower-class students to get the benefits of elite education just by scoring well on some simple tests of ability. The massive test-prep industry thats sprung up around these exams, however, makes it all but impossible for a student with good innate ability but few family resources to compete with students from wealthier families, who can afford extra tutoring and test prep classes and all that. As a result, elite educational institutions have become more skewed toward the children of the current elite classes.
The discussion of the basic problem and its origin is admirably clear and readable, and there are other supporting examples as well. But this is where the book gets frustrating, because while Hayes does a great job pointing out whats wrong, I didnt find the book very helpful in terms of suggesting an alternative.
Having built a reasonably convincing case that the way we currently organize our society is producing a problematic level of inequality, Hayes tries to talk about a way forward, but that section of the book pretty much falls flat. The most he manages is to point to the Tea Party on the political right and the Occupy movement on the political left, and argue that both of these can be seen as reactions to the current plight of the middle class that economic mobility has dramatically decreased, which is scary to a lot of people, and that those fears manifest in the two different angry protest movements. While neither by itself is enough to force a solution to the inequality problem, he speculates that some vague future shcok to the economic system might somehow get them to align their goals. After this miracle occurs, progress!
There are a whole bunch of problems with this, starting with the way he ignores the creepy racist element thats fairly prominent in the Tea Party movement, which is a dramatic obstacle to any reconciliation between the Tea Party and the much more diverse Occupy crowd. Theres also the problem that the sort of reorganization his book seems to suggest would be required would require a lot more sacrifice from the Tea Party in terms of the stated goals of the organization theyre very explicitly opposed to large-scale societal redistribution of resources. And on top of those issues, theres the lack of specificity about what kind of shock might happen to bring them together.
So, as I said, frustrating.
