Seeing Into the Future

Posted: at 8:41 pm

One of the tricks to creating an enduring company is to spot trends before your competitor does, but thats easier said than done.

In the book Think Like a Futurist: Know What Changes, What Doesnt, and Whats Next, author Cecily Sommers notes a number of key attributes that could make your company more innovative.

First, it helps if you can drop your assumptions and see the market without preconceived notions. If you can successfully lose any personal agenda or a weve always done it that way mentality, you will be freer to recognize emerging opportunities.

Be curious. Dont get frustrated by things you dont understand. View them as opportunities to grow.

Ask the right questions. The right order of questions, according to Sommers, is why, what and, finally, how. Spend enough time with each question before moving on to the next, but be comfortable with ambiguity too. Not having all the answers is part of the journey to the future.

And do all this in an atmosphere of collaboration and constructive criticism. Feeling judged kills inventive thinking.

Cisco predicts capacity to 'print' food in 15 years

Posted: at 8:41 pm

Cisco futurist Dave Evans has predicted that the technology to "print" food will be available in the relatively near future.

Answering questions in a Twitter interview this afternoon under the hastag '#AskFuturist', Evans provided a serious answer to the seemingly tongue-in-cheek question: "When will we be able to download food from the internet?"

Evans said: "Not food, but the recipes to print food. Roughly 15 year horizon, but prototypes [are available] now."

His prediction is based on the advent of 3D printing, where three-dimensional object can be created additively using a digital model.

Continuing the theme, Evans also pointed to a new industrial revolution due to the technology.

"[There will] possibly [be] a manufacturing revolution due to 3D printing igniting a new wave of innovation."

He also pointed to increased artificial intelligence becoming available via the internet, when asked what is next for cloud services.

"More A.I. in the cloud (not only SAAS, IAAS, etc). Think Siri, Watson, etc., available to all devices (car, etc)."

When asked by your correspondent whether touch and voice commands will replace the mouse and keyboard in the future, he replied: "Not completely replace, but significantly displace. Gesture will also be a popular interface (on PCs and phones)."

Posted: at 8:41 pm

Acclaimed global futurist, best-selling author and business forecaster Jack Uldrich has been selected to deliver closing keynote addresses at the 2012 Central Pennsylvania Entrepreneurship Conference and the Indiana Economic Development Association's Annual Meeting. In addition to covering future trends in information technology, mobile computing, social networking, "Big Data," biotechnology, nanotechnology, robotics and 3D printing, he will also discuss the need for "unlearning."

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 20, 2012

The title of Uldrichs presentations will be "The Future Demands Unlearning" and the material presented will be based on a combination of his latest book, "Foresight 2020: A Futurist Explores the Trends Transforming Tomorrow" as well as his 2011 best-seller, "Higher Unlearning: 39 Post-Requisite Lessons for Achieving a Successful Future." The presentation, which will cover trends in information and communication technologies, robotics, nanotechnology, biotechnology, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, business analytics, and "crowd-sourcing" is designed to provide entrepreneurs, community leaders and senior economic development officials a solid foundation upon which they can create their own successful futures. An overview of some of Uldrichs ideas on information technologies can be found in this article, 10 Future Mobile Trends for CIOs to Consider Today.

Uldrich will also provide an overview of how technological change is upending long-standing entrepreneurial and economic development models and discuss why future trends will demand unlearning. Uldrich, who has been hailed as "America's Chief Unlearning Officer" and is the author of Higher Unlearning: 39 Post-Requisite Lessons for Achieving a Successful Future, will conclude his talk by reviewing the consequences of not embracing the concept of unlearning. Throughout his talk, Uldrich will use vivid analogies and memorable stories, drawn from a wide spectrum of industries, to ensure his message of change "sticks" with his audience. A sample of some Uldrichs ideas on the future of manufacturing can be found in this chapter from his new book, Foresight 2020.

Ulysses in the 31st Century At the Heart of the Universe 23 – Video

Ulysses in the 31st Century At the Heart of the Universe 23
Ulysses in the 31st Century Ulysses 31 is an 80 #39;s Children #39;s TV cartoon that had kids glued to their TV #39;s. Since then it has become part of Children #39;s TV folklore. Just start a conversion with friends... #39;Do you remember the cartoon Ulysses 31 #39;. 3 hours later you will have found you have talked about loads of programmes you grew up with. It wasn #39;t originally a English show and was in fact a French show animated by a Japanese company. The show was based on a book that was set in ancient Greece called #39;The Odyssey #39; which was written by Homer (no, not the Simpson one!). The series continued with the Greek Mythology theme, but instead it was based in the 31st century (even the space station looked like a Greek helmet).Only 26 episodes of Ulysses 31 were made, which surprises a lot of people as everyone thinks there were more. The Intro music was very catchy (you will hum it for hours), plus the music during the show was very atmospheric and set the mood for each story. One thing I do know is that the title sequence (below) from the Videos/DVDs has been cut short, which is a shame as the intro had sections that Nono sang. I #39;d love to see the original titles again. Plus the DVD #39;s have missed the swoosh effect right at the end of them. I used to love this bit when I was a kid! Story: Each Episode began with these immortal lines: #39;It is the 31st Century, Ulysses killed the Giant Cyclops when he rescued the children and his son Telemachus. But the Ancient Gods of Olympus are angry ...From:TheJackoTravelViews:0 0ratingsTime:08:52More inFilm Animation
