Launch of the Book: DURBAR by Tavleen Singh – Video

Launch of the Book: DURBAR by Tavleen Singh
Durbar: An up-close revealing account of our political past that holds crucial lessons for today #39;s India. A most read Novel ..... In the summer of 1975 Tavleen Singh, not yet twenty-five, started working as a junior reporter in the Statesman in New Delhi. Within five weeks, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency, suspending fundamental rights and imposing press censorship, and soon reckless policies said to be authored by the prime minister #39;s younger son were unleashed on India #39;s citizens. As the country suffered under the iron fist of an elected icon and her chosen heir, Tavleen observed a small, influential section of Delhi #39;s society - people she knew well - remain strangely unaffected by the perilous state of the nation. Before long, members of this circle were entrenched in key positions in the Indian government. In 1984, following Indira Gandhi #39;s assassination, Rajiv Gandhi became prime minister, fortified by a huge mandate from a nation desperate for change. But, belying its hopes, the, young leader chose for himself a group of advisors, friends and acolytes from the drawing rooms of Delhi, as inexperienced as him and just as unaware of the ground realities of a complex nation. It was the beginning of a political culture of favouritism and ineptitude that would take hold at the highest levels #39;of government, stunting India #39;s ambitions and frustrating its people #39; well into the next century. Seasoned reporter and distinguished newspaper columnist Tavleen ...From:NBCINDIA123Views:11 1ratingsTime:04:49More inNews Politics

Anger As China #39;s Nobel Winner Defends Censorship
Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com On Dec. 6, Mo Yan, winner of the 2012 Nobel Literature Prize, spoke at a press conference in Sweden about censorship in China. His speech continuously provoked controversy, and many criticisms were posted online. Wang Dan, a leader of the Tiananmen protests in 1989, posted a statement declaring, "I am very angry with Mo Yan #39;s speech." Regarding Mo Yan #39;s "censorship is necessary" speech, Wang Dan said, "This is shameful for Nobel Literature Prize, his sin will go down in history." Wang Dan said it is true that some speeches are published online in China, but many weren #39;t able to be. Otherwise, what explanation is there for the existence of the word #39;sensitive #39;, he questioned. In addition, many people were arrested for their self-expression on the Internet. Ran Yunfei, an activist in Sichuan province tweeted: "Mo Yan #39;s superstition on state power and ignorance of human rights is indeed shocking the people. The point he discussed regarding censorship existing in every country of the world is really nonsense. Mo Yan thinks the government power is the highest, the government is the judge of the truth, yet everyone can tell it (the government) is against common sense." Heartbreak As China's First Nobel Literature Prize Winner Defends Censorship

Posted: at 1:43 pm

China had been thrilled to claim its first real Nobellaureate earlier this year, as Mo Yan won the 2012 Nobel prize for literature for his "hallucinatory realism".

Some foreign observers had their doubts about a man who was viewed as being close to the regime even partaking in a celebration of the 70th-anniversary of Mao Zedong's Speech at Yanan Forum on Art and Literature,a speech that said that artists who did not integrate into the Communist Party should be punished but few could doubt the power of his novels, and most would give him the benefit of the doubt.

As such, his comments in Sweden on Thursday have broken a lot of hearts. Appearing at a news conference in Stockholm on the eve of the presentation of the award, Mo said that censorship shouldn't stand in the way of truth, but that rumors and defamation "should be censored," AP reports.

"But I also hope that censorship, per se, should have the highest principle," he added. He went on to compare the censorship process to airline security. "When I was taking my flight, going through the customs ... they also wanted to check me even taking off my belt and shoes [...] But I think these checks are necessary."

The words cut especially hard as many had been hoping Mo would use the opportunity to give support to his jailed compatriot and Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, as he had been petitioned to do by fellow nobel laureates. Mo instead told reporters he had said all he had to say about Liu (he has previously said he hopes he finds freedom as soon as possible), adding "I have said this prize is about literature. Not for politics."

The comments have drawn widespread criticism from around the world, with Salman Rushdie writing on Facebook. ""He defends censorship and won't sign the petition asking for the freedom of his fellow Nobelist Liu Xiaobo. Hard to avoid the conclusion that Mo Yan is the Chinese equivalent of the Soviet Russian apparatchik writer Mikhail Sholokhov: a patsy of the regime."

Over at the Atlantic, James Fallows summed up in a way that resonated widely: "As a writer, Mo Yan is obviously talented. As a public figure, he will forever be diminished by the stands he is taking, and avoiding, now."

Ron Paul: The Film (HQ Full Length)
Like if or not, Ron Paul proved he couldn #39;t be bought. That says enough 😛 http://www.infowars.com Not just Infowars.com, but many a political researcher and pundit took notice that Ron Paul #39;s farewell address to Congress was a historic and very important speech spelling out that our country is becoming a corrupt empire and that we #39;re becoming a tyranny of tyrannies. The New York Times, LA Times, Fox News and many others all took notice of his farewell address, something that doesn #39;t normally happen with a Congressman, as he laid out the fork in the road America has come to: liberty or tyranny. I asked one of my great reporters and video editors, Jon Bowne, to just back everything Congressman Paul said up, but when we talk about something, we like to show news articles or video clips because so many are skeptical and in denial about the ravaged state of our liberties. Originally we intended the piece to be just something for the Infowars Nightly News, but it quickly snowballed into a three week project as we did more and more research backing up everything he said. So, now this is essentially Ron Paul #39;s Farewell 2.0. It #39;s a film because his farewell address was about his life and about where this country is going and the choice we have. So it really is Ron Paul: The Film. We struggled with the name for it: "Ron Paul #39;s Farewell Address Documented," "Ron Paul #39;s Farewell Address Animated," "Ron Paul #39;s Farewell Address Illustrated and Documented," call it what you will. Texas Rep. Ron Paul Heads for a Lucrative Retirement

Posted: at 1:42 pm

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, after a last, abortive run for president, is retiring from his seat in the United States Congress. But the 77-year-old politician and advocate for small government is not going to have a relaxing retirement.

Paul signs with a speakers' bureau

According to the Washington Times, Paul has signed with the Greater Talent Network to arrange for speaking engagements. Starting in January, Paul will be paid handsomely to spread his message of smaller government at home and an isolationist foreign policy. Fees have not been disclosed, but they could be upwards to $50,000 a speech, plus travel expenses. In effect, Paul will be practicing what he has often preached, free market capitalism, by selling what he used to give away for free.

Ron Paul: The Film

Paul recently created a stir with what amounted to a farewell address on the floor of Congress in which he summed up his views on government, human freedom, and foreign policy. The speech, with some backup documentation, has been folded into a just over one-hour movie now available on YouTube, dubbed "Ron Paul: The Film." It may be the last address Paul will give for free,

Ron Paul on the fiscal cliff

As Paul prepares for a lucrative retirement, he has not been quiet on the issues of the day. In a YouTube video he recently uploaded, Paul opened his mind on the so-called fiscal cliff. He suggested that the fiscal cliff is a congressionally manufactured crisis that will culminate at the last moment with a deal that will not address America's fiscal crisis. He decried the idea of raising taxes and suggested cutting spending on everything from what he termed corporate welfare to foreign military operations. If anything, Paul suggested that a more sensible approach would be to cut taxes and spending while limiting government to its constitutionally mandated role.

Rand Paul as Ron Paul's heir disputed

In the meantime, as Paul heads for retirement, his followers are mulling over who might be his political heir. While the obvious answer might be his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a libertarian-leaning Republican, it is not a view that is universally shared. According to the Hill, Sen. Paul was criticized by a former Ron Paul staffer for voting for imposing sanctions on Iran, something that Rep. Paul opposed. Another piece in the Hill referred to Sen. Paul as a "shoot-from-the-hip politician" apparently as opposed to his father, who was described as having "devoted a generation of hard work and deep thought to achieve a well-deserved reputation."

Texas resident Mark Whittington writes about state issues for the Yahoo! Contributor Network.
