Mir Space Station: Testing Long-Term Stays in Space
Posted: February 6, 2013 at 1:48 am
Mir was a space station that operated for more than 15 years in low Earth orbit. The design was conceived under the Soviet Union, and the station continued work under Russia after the union fell apart in the early 1990s.
The space station served as an important precursor to today's International Space Station. Aboard Mir, crews dealt for the first time with long-duration stays in space of more than 400 days. Health effects and psychological situations were observed and documented.
In later years, NASA used Mir as a testbed for international co-operation. The agency was eager to move forward with ISS, but felt that it required experience working with Russia before continuing. As such, NASA signed an agreement to send its astronauts aboard Mir.
Results from the program were mixed, with some American astronauts comparing about feeling isolated and undersupported when training overseas. Worse, by the time NASA astronauts arrived, Mir was nearing the end of its operational lifetime and experienced frequent power failures and a near-fatal fire.
Astronauts generally, however, got a lot of microgravity research done during the program. Also, the experience aboard Mir gave NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) an education on how to best work together for ISS.
Extending long-term duration experience
According to Enyclopedia Astronautica, Mir was intended as a successor project to the Soviet Union's Salyut series of space stations. While the United States was focused on the moon program in the 1960s and developing the shuttle in the 1970s, Russia went in another direction after the space race.
The country worked on developing expertise in long-duration spaceflight, and felt that a larger space station would allow for more research in that area. Mir was originally authorized in a February 1976, then evolved by 1978 to a station with several ports for crewed Soyuz spacecraft and cargo Progress spaceships.
NPO Energia began work in earnest on the station in 1979, reportedly subcontracting the responsibilities to KB Salyut because Energia was preoccupied with the Salyut, Soyuz, and Progress programs, among others. Work stalled somewhat as Russia developed a Buran space shuttle, but according to the encyclopedia, in 1984 the Soviet Union made it a priority to orbit the station in two years to coincide with the 27th Communist Party Congress in spring 1986.
It took some planning adjustments, but the first module of Mir launched successfully on Feb. 20, 1986. The next step would be bringing it alive for cosmonauts to occupy it.

Genetic engineering: It’s a technology, not an ideology
Posted: at 1:48 am
Not as simple as 'for' or 'against'
Whether you are pro or anti genetic engineering has become a divisive political issue, but remember that we are talking about technology; it shouldnt be an ideology.
Last week, BASF said it would stop seeking European regulatory approval for three genetically modified (GM) potato varieties, citing uncertainty in the regulatory environment. After a decade of research, its going elsewhere.
It was a decision welcomed by anti-GM campaigners. Jubilation exploded on various internet forums. But I think its a sad indictment of the scientific climate in Europe, when a company thats invested millions to produce potatoes that are resistant to late blight a major potato crop disease is driven out of Europe because regulators cant decide what to do about divisions in public and political opinion.
In the balance
Genetic engineering shouldnt be a political issue, no matter how much sci-fi-sensitive individuals might be reminded of the plot from The Day of the Triffids. Plants can be engineered in many ways, and their potential benefits should be balanced with an assessment of their potential detriments no matter what the technology.
Meanwhile, new GM crops are carefully considered by safety assessors around the world, including by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which, if youve been paying attention to its work on health claims, has an excellent record of telling the industry to go back to the drawing board if the science isnt solid enough.
From my perspective, the reaction from many people on internet forums underlines the need for better science education, not necessarily around genetic engineering, but in order to be better critical consumers of scientific knowledge. In other words, dont believe everything youre told.

New Zealand police have obtained a DNA sample from a young girl people had thought to be Madeleine McCann, at the request of Scotland Yard.
The request follows a New Year's Eve sighting of the girl in Queenstown. It was not the first time her striking resemblance to the missing young British girl had been reported to police.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis, of Dunedin, confirmed police would be sending a DNA profile of the girl to British police investigating Madeleine's disappearance.
"Police will be sending a DNA profile to British police . . . to confirm the identity of a girl who has been mistaken for Madeleine by a member of the public," Mr Croudis said.
DNA sampling was a conclusive way to establish identity, he said.
The DNA profile was given voluntarily to police. The results of the test are not expected to be available for weeks.
"The results of this process will not be known for some time," he said.
Madeleine McCann went missing from the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007 just before her fourth birthday. She was on holiday with her parents Kate and Gerry and siblings Sean and Amelie.
Queenstown hit international headlines after a retailer reported serving a man, and a girl who bore a striking resemblance to the missing Madeleine, on New Year's Eve.

Muslim leader warns on pork DNA
Posted: at 1:48 am
4 February 2013 Last updated at 06:56 ET
A leader of Ireland's Muslims has warned that the discovery of pork DNA in halal products could damage the reputation of Irish meat.
Tyrone food company McColgan's and distributors 3663 withdrew products after pork traces were found in pies meant for English and Irish jails.
Pork is strictly forbidden by Islamic dietary rules.
Dr Ali Saleem said on RTE's Morning Ireland that for a Muslim, eating pork was "equivalent to taking drugs".
He said Irish beef had a "wonderful reputation among Muslims in Britain and Ireland" but it would now have to be tested by the Muslim community's own agencies.
The Food Standards Agency NI, however, said no pork meat was found in halal products meant for prisons in England and Wales.
County Tyrone food company McColgan's and distributors 3663 withdrew products after traces of pork DNA were found.
The tests were carried out following the discovery of horse meat in beefburgers produced in County Monaghan.
The burgers had been on sale in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Horse DNA found in burgers at second Irish plant
Posted: at 1:48 am
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Burgers containing horse DNA have been discovered at a second plant in Ireland, the country's agriculture department said on Monday, again pointing the finger at Poland as the country of origin for the raw materials.
Major food companies like Tesco and Burger King last month found that beef products supplied by an Irish firm contained horse DNA, a scandal that has hit retailers with a wave of bad publicity and left Ireland's 2 billion euro ($2.7 billion) beef industry reeling.
Results of tests on a Polish meat ingredient at Ireland's Rangeland Foods, a supplier of frozen burgers to restaurants, caterers and pubs including local fast food chain Supermac's, contained 75 percent horse DNA, the agriculture department in a statement.
It said Rangeland has suspended production pending the outcome of an investigation and that the company has indicated that none of the products, which were imported through a meat trader based in Ireland, had entered the food chain.
Rangeland, based in the northern county of Monaghan, exports burgers to Britain, Sweden, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece and Cyprus.
The minister of agriculture has also asked the police to join in the investigation, the department added.
The first supplier to be implicated, Silvercrest - a subsidiary of Europe's largest beef exporter ABP Foods - has lost its contract to supply both Tesco and Burger King with burgers.
Burger King, one of the most popular fast-food chains in Britain and Ireland, said last week that its affected burgers never reached any eateries. Tesco withdrew a number of products from its shelves, including one sample where horse meat accounted for about 29 percent of content.
Smaller retail chains Aldi, Lidl and Iceland have also sold beef products found to contain horse DNA.
Poland's veterinary authority found no signs of horse meat in samples from five slaughterhouses that were sending beef to Ireland and is awaiting results from the sixth, state news agency PAP reported on Friday.
