PharmaPoint: Psoriasis – UK Drug Forecast and Market Analysis to 2022

Posted: October 14, 2013 at 3:41 pm

London (PRWEB) October 14, 2013

Summary

GlobalData has released its new Country report, PharmaPoint: Psoriasis - UK Drug Forecast and Market Analysis to 2022. There are no long-term effective therapies for Psoriasis (PsO), so this remains at the top of the list for unmet needs. While physicians agree that biologics are relatively safe and effective, these therapies are still lacking because of their immunosuppressant nature and lack of understanding as to their exact mechanism of action.

GlobalData expects the PsO pipeline to begin launching hopefuls in 2015, starting with Novartis secukinumab and Celgenes apremilast. The following year, Mercks MK-3222, Lillys ixekizumab, Pfizers Xeljanz, and Amgens brodalumab will emerge, thus jamming the PsO market and making it difficult for each drug to gain market share.

Scope

-Overview of Psoriasis, including epidemiology, etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, pathology and treatment guidelines as well as an overview on the competitive landscape. -Detailed information on the key drugs in the UK including product description, safety and efficacy profiles as well as a SWOT analysis. -Sales forecast for the top drugs in the UK from 2012 to 2022. -Analysis of the impact of key events as well the drivers and restraints affecting the UK Psoriasis market.

Cricket body accused of censorship over ads

Posted: at 3:41 pm

Oct. 15, 2013, 3 a.m.

Cricket Australia has refused to run an advertisement telling fans that ''alcohol and sport don't mix'' on the grounds it thinks they mix perfectly well.

Healthway, the main sponsor of the Western Australian Cricket Association, was offered advertising along with all the other big state team sponsors at the Ryobi Cup, now under way in Sydney.

But the group was told its advertisement was not appropriate as it could affect "other partners" in the game, said Mike Daube, from the McCusker Centre for Alcohol and Youth. "This is appalling censorship by Cricket Australia," Professor Daube said.

Its alternative says "Under 18. No Alcohol. The Safest Choice", but Professor Daube said health groups were frustrated that even a mild message trying to remove the link between alcohol and sport would be rejected.

"Their priorities are clear. They are keen to protect their alcohol sponsors from messages that might offend them but do nothing to stop alcohol promotion that might offend health-promoting sponsors," he said.

The war to control the messages sent by sporting stars will be

prominent next week when the XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls face off against the Alcohol. Think Again Western Warriors.

A sponsorship deal between Carlton & United Breweries and Cricket Australia is thought to be worth $65 million over five years. The Healthway deal is worth $2.1 million over three years.

The dean of the Victoria University college of sport and exercise science, Hans Westerbeek, said alcohol sponsorship was now as important to sport "as tobacco sponsorship was 20 or 30 years ago".

Born Libertarian: Doug Casey on Ron Paul and the Price of Freedom

Posted: at 3:40 pm

By The Gold Report

The Gold Report: Doug, we are at your conference in Tucson, Arizona, the day after former Congressman and presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul gave the keynote speech to a sold-out crowd. How did you two first meet?

Doug Casey: It was about 30 years ago. Ron used to attend my Eris Societynamed after the Greek goddess of discordmeetings in Aspen, Colorado. Everyone from Sonny Barger of the Hells Angels motorcycle club to Burt Rutan, inventor of SpaceShipOne, would meet to discuss ideas.

TGR: In those 30 years, have Ron Paul's ideas changed much?

DC: Ron believes he was born a libertarian. He's right. I believe in Pareto's lawthe 80-20 rule. I prefer to think that 80% of humans are basically decent, which is to say that they were born libertarian oriented. But it takes a while to crystallize what that means. Ron and I, and many others, have moved beyond gut libertarianism to a structured, intellectual libertarianism.

Some people see the same things we see through a totally different lens, however. Those people tend to be the other 20%, or perhaps 20% of that 20%, or even 20% of that 20% of that 20%. They range from being wishy-washy on ethical subjects to being sociopaths or even outright criminals. These people are at the opposite end of the spectrum from us in every way.

TGR: One of the things Ron Paul mentioned last night is that a true libertarian advocates for the freedom of everyone to do what he or she wants as long as it's not hurting someone else. This includes people who don't agree with your views.

DC: Exactly. As opposed to busybodies who want to tell everybody else what to do. They think they know best and are perfectly willing to put a gun to your head to make sure that you do what they think is right.

TGR: We are meeting in the midst of a government shutdown. Ron Paul called it a paid holiday for federal workers. Are we doomed to an endless cycle of these manmade crises?

DC: I would like nothing better than to see the shutdown go on forever, but unfortunately the government is only shutting down things that inconvenience people, like monuments and national parksthings that should not be owned by the government to start with. I wish they would shut down all their praetorian agencies, like the FBI, the CIA, and the NSA. Shut down the IRS. I am much more concerned about Silk Road being shut down than I am the US government being shut down.

More Transhuman than Human | theVAULTmagazine

Posted: October 13, 2013 at 10:41 pm

BY MARY WARREN

Humans have evolved into a state of self-ascribed superiority in comparison to the rest of the animal kingdom, so what is the next rung on the ladder of humanity? Transhumanists believe its to shed the human condition with the help of science and technology.

Transhumanism is a movement aimed at transforming or modifying the human body and mind into something far more advanced. As a species, weve all had transhumanist thoughts at least once, where we imagined the benefits to being smarter, more athletic, or more psychologically stable. With the ideals of personal enhancement in mind, transhumanism seems like a logical and beneficial progression for humanity, but some naysayers warn that transhumanism could be one of the worlds most dangerous ideas.

On the exterior, the motives behind transhumanism appear to be fundamentally for the good, and humanitys desire for transhumanist progression can even be traced as far back as the tale of the quest for the fountain of youth. However, when ethics enters the field all the potential good has to be immediately questioned. Unlike many other movements, transhumanists dont value the preservation of natural systems and instead see the natural as problematic. Another glaring issue with transhumanism would be the division of people. Much like the division of social classes, transhumanism could create an unfair divide between the technologically enhanced and those who remain au naturel.

With a disregard for the natural state of humanity, those who choose (or could afford) to enhance themselves would be at a great advantage over those who chose to maintain their natural traits or simply couldnt afford to rise above the human condition. To draw from the wise words of Spidermans Uncle Ben With great power, comes great responsibility. However, we cant rely on an entire population to be as moral as Spider-man, especially when humans have a tendency to disregard those with a differing ideology.

It would be incredibly likely for the transhumanist class to feel a sense of superiority over their natural counterparts as warned by G. Annas, L. Andrews and R. Isasi in their paper Protecting the Endangered Human: Toward an International Treaty Prohibiting Cloning and Inheritable Alteration:

The new species, or posthuman, will likely view the old normal humans as inferior, even savages, and fit for slavery or slaughter. The normals, on the other hand, may see the post-humans as a threat and if they can, may engage in a pre-emptive strike by killing the post-humans before they themselves are killed or enslaved by them. It is ultimately this predictable potential for genocide that makes species-altering experiments potential weapons of mass destruction, and makes the unaccountable genetic engineer a potential bioterrorist.

Its also been argued that a transhumanist society would be left vulnerable due to a lack of the need for dissent and dissatisfaction. Physician, scientist and intellectual Leon Kass warns what will become of us if we decide to dehumanize ourselves:

The final technical conquest of his own nature would almost certainly leave mankind utterly enfeebled. This form of mastery would be identical with utter dehumanization. Read Huxleys Brave New World, read C. S. Lewiss Abolition of Man, read Nietzsches account of the last man, and then read the newspapers.

Homogenization, mediocrity, pacification, drug-induced contentment, debasement of taste, souls without loves and longingsthese are the inevitable results of making the essence of human nature the last project of technical mastery. In his moment of triumph, Promethean man will become a contented cow.
