‘Almost Human’ Reveals 2nd Missing Episode in Week 8

Posted: at 10:43 pm

[This is a review forAlmost Humanseason 1, episode 8. It contains SPOILERS.]

Its the second episode made and the eighth to air, but Almost Human has finally started talking about Kennexs girlfriend Anna again, albeit briefly, in its final episode leading before a 3-week hiatus. Though Foxs new future series is on-point and a thoroughly enjoyable watch, itll be to each his own when the series returns February 10, as its still a bit difficult to get a sense of this series direction.

In this weeks missing episode, You Are Here, written by creator J.H. Wyman & former executive producer Naren Shankar, technology takes over and an assassin no mark could ever hide from is created. As Kennex and Dorian attempt to track down its source before more lives are taken, Maldonado looks deeper into the incident that cost Kennex his leg (not to mention his partner), revealing a much larger mystery that could ultimately take down the entire precinct.

Like last weeks episode (and most, really), Simon Says, this weeks is a fun and compelling looking into the future of technology and, in the case of You Are Here, assassinations, which are now able to be completed with bullets meant to track the location of their intended target, no matter where they are. Whats most impressive, though, is the fact that this is the second episode made and, barring a few out of context scenes, reveals the true strength of the series foundation.

More so, a few questions that fans have been looking for answers to like Kennex not making use of other synthetics while in the field or Richards general feelings toward the famed duo were legitimately addressed, proving that, though the series has been aired out of order (thanks to scheduling), an earnest intent was made to fully develop the series early-on in its existence.

Unfortunately, Almost Human has been muddied by shifting schedules and a second-helping of hiatus, and this episode (as well as others) no matter how thoroughly enjoyable never truly develop into anything more complex than its 8pm timeslot will allow which isnt much, but it sure is more than most.

This, in addition to the weak and generally sparse storyline involving Kennexs ex, or even Dorians desire for mortality to make sense, makes it difficult for much of the series hard-earned appeal to ingrain itself in the minds of those watching. The show is entertaining, and the cast is honestly too good for network television; however, outside of a few truly brilliant moments, theres still no reason to care about whats going on and network television isnt superficial enough to survive on potential alone, no matter who is in the cast.

‘Being Human’ Season 4 Premiere Review

Posted: at 10:43 pm

[This is a review of the Being Humanseason 4 premiere. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

Being Humans fourth season premiere (Old Dogs, New Tricks) picks-up three months after the events of the season 3 finale (despite the nine month real-time gap between episodes) with Aidan (Sam Witwer) and Nora (Kristen Hager) running through the woods from a wolfed out Josh (Sam Huntington) while Sally (Meaghan Rath) is trapped in some kind of purgatory spa. The two sequences are far from the dreary Boston apartment and the shows other familiar locales, but while the surroundings are a bit different, the episode doesnt take long to snip some of last seasons remaining plot threads while pulling out a few new ones.

Firstly, Josh is still a wolf following last seasons cliffhanger. Essentially, his human to werewolf ratio flipped 180 degrees to where he only turns human one night a month which just so happens to be the night that Nora turns into a wolf. Theres a weird romantic poetry to the ships-passing-in-the-night status of their relationship and unbound passion at play when they finally see each other after those separately torturous days, but we can see Joshs underlying pain seeping out. The reunion is bittersweet, brief, and if Josh has his way, a goodbye.

Slipping in and out of his human consciousness while spending his wolf time alternately in a barn stall and in the forest where he chases his friends for exercise, Josh knows that Aidan and Nora feel duty-bound to tend to him in his wolf state, but he is desperate to free them from that burden and asks Aidan to kill him. A request that is rejected and pushed aside by Aidan and Josh with too much ease a disappointing trend that is also at play when it comes time to resolve Sallys situation.

Held by Donna who may not be as cut-and-dry evil as we thought in season 3 Sallys escape from her holding cellis predictable, too easy (theres the trend), and one of the coolest visuals in the episode as it switches between the sight of Sally swinging from a rope in a big box retailer and an olde Massachusetts witch trial.

Her escape and return to the group may also signal doom and a more ambitious footprint for the show if Donnas warnings about Sallys powers and her presence in the realm of the living prove to be true. But Donnas exit feels entirely too quick and her intentions far too noble following her arc from last season. Will she return as the season delves into realm of witchcraft and the reason for Sallys spiritual durability?

The 9 Best Satanic Cults in History

Posted: at 10:43 pm

History is stuffed with rumors of strange and secretive Satanic cults. Some of those rumors are nothing more than a load of hot goat's blood, and others are something more. Check out the best cults in history, and see if they ever really existed.

Ah, Salem. In 1692, over a period of only a few months, 200 people had been accused of witchcraft and jailed, and 20 had been killed. (One man had been tortured to death. His interrogators had piled stones on his chest he smothered.) It started out as a few girls - none of them over twelve years old - "having fits." It soon became a storm of accusations that only ended when the governor's wife was accused of witchcraft and he shut the whole thing down. Many people confessed to trafficking with the devil and writing their name in his book. Under torture, they named others who they had seen at black masses. One woman named her own daughter. On paper it looked like a good part of the village was a Satanic cult.

S

Was it Real?

What's strange about the Salem Witch Trials is not that no one believes it now - it's that no one even believed it then. The village of Salem was known to be a nasty place. Its members quarreled with each other and with their neighbors. The town couldn't keep a minister because the supposedly devout Christians refused to pay ministers their agreed-upon salary. Once the trials began, letters poured in from the surrounding countryside condemning the very idea, and ridiculing the use of incorporeal evidence, like visions and dreams. Executions seemed to be meted to the less popular and the less protected. The woman who named her own daughter as a witch was hanged. The daughter was not. Nor was Tituba, a slave who was one of the first people accused of witchcraft - and the very first to confess. Possibly she lived because, as she had no property and no ability to cause trouble for others, no one stood to gain from her death. After the trials were shut down, the town reversed its stance on witches quickly. The accused were let go. The use of incorporeal evidence was deemed unlawful. Within fifteen years, the verdicts were declared void and restitution was paid to any accused yet living, even if they had confessed. Everyone seemed to know it was a fraud, but during the trials no one spoke up.

Michelle Remembers has entirely sunk from the public consciousness by now, but in 1980, when it was published, it kickstarted a whole movement. The book was about the recovered memories of Michelle Smith. Aided by her psychiatrist, she remembered horrific abuse at the hands of an ancient and international cult of Satanists. Among Michelle's memories were things like 81-day ceremonies in a public graveyard during which the cult raised the devil, only to see him fought back down to hell by angels and the Virgin Mary. The book started a two-decade search for child-abusing satanic cults that supposedly populated America and several other countries. That search ended in some drawn-out trials and a few convictions. The fear of underground Satanic cults was so widespread that it earned the name "The Satanic Panic." Geraldo Rivera claimed that there were over a million satanic cults in the US. In South Africa, they actually trained a supernatural crimes unit to deal the the cases.

Was it Real?

Almost certainly not. Although the book got a good reception when it was first published, the public soured on Smith and her psychiatrist when they divorced their respective spouses, married each other, and went on speaking tours. Eventually reporters and television stations began looking into the book's claims, and found out that Michelle had never been out of school for 81 days, and the site of the two-month-long ritual to raise the devil occurred in a graveyard surrounded on three sides by suburban houses. As for the claim that there there were a million satanic cults in America, if it were true it would mean that, at the time of the claim, one in two-hundred people would have been a Satanist.

Founded in 1948, Our Lady of Endor is an example of gnostic Satanism. The founder, Herbert Sloane, claimed to have seen a horned god in the woods as a child. Later he realized that this was Satan. With that in mind, he re-read the Bible story and saw the serpent not as a tempter, but as someone who showed Eve the true nature of God. The "fall of man" was a good thing, but its meaning was twisted by Christian theists.
